With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence, it's only fitting that Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale is being touted as a Clockwork Orange for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolchildren, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the "punishments" that will ensue. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale." Their only chance of survival is through the death of all their classmates.

Some pupils embrace their mission with zeal, while others simply give up or try to become peacemakers and revolutionaries. However, the ultimate drive for survival comes from the desire to protect the one you love. Battle Royale works on many different levels, highlighting the authorities' desperation to enforce law and order and the alienation caused by the generation gap. Whether you consider the film an important social commentary or simply watch it for the adrenaline-fueled violence, this is set to become cult viewing for the computer game generation and beyond. --Nikki Disney

Album Description

With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence it's only fitting that Kenta Fukasaku's Battle Royale is being touted as A Clockwork Orange for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese school kids, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the 'punishments' which will ensue. To be honest, anyone who has grown up with Grange Hill will view these aggressive teenagers' acts as pretty moderate, but in the context of Japanese culture, their lack of respect is a challenge to the traditional values of respecting ones elders. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ('Beat' Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate, after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the 'Battle Royale'. Their only chance of survival in the 'Battle' is through the death of all their classmates. Some pupils embrace their mission with zeal, while others simply give up or try to become peacemakers and revolutionaries. However, the ultimate drive for survival comes from the desire to protect the one you love. The film looks like a war-flick on occasions, with intense Apocalypse Now-style imagery (check out the classical score blasted over the tannoys with sweeping shots of helicopters). Yet, Battle Royale works on many different levels, highlighting the authorities' desperation to enforce law and order and the alienation caused by the generation gap. But whether you view the film as an important social commentary or simply enjoy the adrenalin-fuelled violence, this is set to become cult viewing for the computer game generation and beyond. Approx. 109 mins/NTSC/Region 0. Tartan Asia. 2001.

4 out of 5 stars Not as violent as I thought it would be.......2007-06-21

an above average movie with a rather creative story but and decent acting, the dialouge is nothing to marvel at but it isn't unbearable, it seems have a decent lesson to be learned and accuratley depicts in my opinion what would really happen in a time of desperation some would go crazy some would turn to there lovers some would admit secrets never told before and some would reflect. I didn't love the ending, could easily have been refined. overall : 4 stars

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Director's Cut.......2007-06-10

Before you type out a retaliatory positive review- read on!

I want to start off by saying I absolutely LOVE Battle Royale- It is most certainly on my list of favorite movies. HOWEVER- this 'Director's Cut' is total garbage.

Sadly, as with the case for many 'Special Edition' DVDs, Battle Royale: Director's Cut adds unnecessary footage that does nothing to enhance the film. The end is extending by 8 minutes or so - and delves into a sort of epilogue and series of dream sequences.

The Battle Royale wiki explains the changes here: (...)

No attempt was made to clean up the subtitles: I can ignore misspellings and incorrect conjugations - however at one point the subtitles ran off the screen. The subtitles in the added scenes were far worse than that of the rest of the movie.

I am not bashing Battle Royale; I want people to buy the regular version and forget that this Director's Cut is even an option.

4 out of 5 stars i liked it.................2007-06-08

interesting and entertaining movie about a group of highschool kids that go on a field trip but end up being taken to a desserted island and forced to kill one another. they get a napsack with basic items like food, water, a map and one weapon. the weapons range from handguns, machine guns, crossbows and a pot lid. the only way to get off the island is to be the only survivor of the BR game which gets tedious when paranoia runs rampid.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MOVIE!!.......2007-05-17

This is a great movie. it's most likely my favorite. it is not exactly like the book but the director did a great job adapting the text into the film. it is definitely a must have if you are a fan of japanese movies.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-07

One of my personal favortie movies. Easily a good watch, even if you don't normally like subtitles. This movie will keep you up at night, asking yourself "What if..."
What if you were forced to kill your entire high school class? what if you watched your best friend die right in front of your face? what would you do? would you run, hide, and wait things out, or would you strategize, fight your friends, or fight the system.

Tatsuya is a phenominal director, and has fantastically created this movie to seem very much like real life, much as was done in 28 Days Later.

The movie is a fantastic display of human nature. everyone has a story. I also highly suggest that you read the book or the manga, as it is far more detailed.

and as for those who have already read the book, you, unfortunately, will be disapointed to find that many parts of the book are summed over.
However, Battle Royale is still a fantastic book, and a great dvd with plenty of exciting extras.

highly suggested

A respectable tearjerker, Life as a House is a welcome throwback to angst-ridden family dramas like Ordinary People and Terms of Endearment. It falls short of those modern classics, but you'll probably still need Kleenex if you appreciate Kevin Kline's underrated dramatic skills. As the title suggests, Kline's project is a broad metaphor for repairing damaged lives from the foundation up. Playing an architect with terminal cancer, he gives an Oscar ®-caliber performance, reaching out to his estranged, nihilistic son (future Star Wars star Hayden Christensen) and ex-wife (Kristin Scott-Thomas) as he wrecks and rebuilds the Malibu cliff-top home that contained his most painful memories. Director Irwin Winkler's flair with actors helps to minimize lapses in a script (by As Good As It Gets scribe Mark Andrus) that occasionally borders on maudlin. Overall, this is a fine reminder that Hollywood hasn't lost its soul to action and special effects. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars family drama.......2007-05-13

Kevin Kline plays a father learning to live with his mistakes and trying to connect with his addicted, near suicidal, son and estranged wife while dealing with his oncoming death.
Using a house as a metaphor in tearing down then rebuilding his family was very clever and allowed a family dynamic to be studied during reconstruction.
The cast made this story very sentimental but with a strong portrayal of their faults.
I highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Why you'll love Life as a House ... if you're over 40!.......2007-02-26

Sure, people discovered Hayden Christensen after it was announced that he was Darth Vader. But some of us saw him before that in "Life as a House," which is NOT about teen angst but more about aging and regret. Kevin Kline is brilliant as a frustrated architect at the end of his life, trying to correct a life littered with mistakes: career, family, personal feelings. The story chronicles his attempts to reconnect with his estranged son, makes amends to his ex-wife and leave behind something positive and tangible to record his presence on earth. There's laughter, tears and a lot of catharsis.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie excellent seller.......2007-01-19

5 out of 5 stars If You Only Had 45 Days Left - What Would You Do... MUST SEE!.......2006-12-01

Kevin Klein plays the lead role of a character that is 45 years old, emotionally wounded from a number of bad circumstances in his life, and distanced from his detached and dark 16 year old son who lives with his ex-wife. He decides to take his son for the summer, tear down down his shack of a house (ie. destroy the bad things in his life), and build a new house with his son (ie. Create a house that represents what he would have liked to have done in his life).

This is an emotionally powerful movie, that will make you cry, and motivate you throughout the movie. I was personally moved when my 17 year old son told me that the Kevin Klein character reminded him of myself, and that he has seen the movie dozens of times.

Absolutely entertaining cast, in situations that make you reflective of what you should be doing in life!

4 out of 5 stars Don't judge a boy by his Star Wars.......2006-10-19

It's such a relief to know that Hayden Christiansen can really act, although the film is carried by the underrated Kevin Kline. I won't re-hash the plot, because all the reviewers have done so. I think this film was wonderfully directed and emotional without hitting everyone in the face. The only thing that's really unrealistic is that Sam, Hayden's character, turns things around a little too neatly and quickly. Otherwise, it's a look at one man's efforts to get things done before he dies. Also includes a nice come-uppance at the end.

Yep, this is "soft porn". And, although they don't show EVERYTHING, they do show enough to make it very interesting, and I think the selection of girls was very good - there's definitely some cuties here -- especially the one in the black skirt who meets with a professor in the hallway. If u see this movie, you'll know exactly who I mean. It's the Best scene in the flick!

I hope they release more adult titles in UMD format. I mean, a portable device which can play video games, music, browse the internet AND display T'n'A?! Hell yea!! ;)

this is all you need for this film. simply english subtitles. I love this movie so much! it's the monty python of Japan. :)

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2007-06-13

this movie is great fun. almost perfect. the only problem i find is the weird dentist office scene crowbar'd into the middle. otherwise it's a great escape. the film totally lacks cynicism but is not 'soft'...and bonus if you like ramen.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2007-04-29

A delightful noodle Western. A widowed mother of one finds unlikely allies in her grail-like quest for the best ramen noodles and soup. This, contrary to what one might believe, is serious business. It requires dedication, perseverance, artistry, risk and even espionage. If you love food, comedy, films that poke fun at popular culture, kitsch romance, high cinema; if you revel in a great story served with a healthy dash of mushy love and more than a sprinkling of burly machismo; if, above all, you love a happy ending, you'll love Tampopo. Perfectly balanced. Now, if only they'd come out with the companion recipe book - I am dying to try the rice omelet and the ramen soup with pork!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic and truly distinctive..............2007-04-14

I am a great fan of the food film genre. This includes everything from LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE (from Mexico) to EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN (from Taiwan). TAMPOPO is a (more than) 20 year old Japanese film about the culture's love affair with and cultural connection to food. Particularly, ramen is showcased here (among other entrees). The film follows the chance encounter that two truck drivers, Goro (Tsutomo Yamazaki) and Gun (Ken Watanabe) have with Tampopo (translation: "Dandelion") (Nobuko Miyamoto), the owner of a small, failing noodle restaurant that they patronize one stormy night. Goro, the older, more experienced driver, agrees to help coach Tampopo in the art of gourmet noodle production, so she is truly a contender with her competition. Noodle making (and consumption) is truly a fine art, as well as a competitive sport. The provocative sub-plot juxtaposed with the plight of Tampopo is the relationship between a yakuza gangster (Koji Yakusho) and his mistress (Fukumi Kuroda). Food is central in their relationship, as well as in their love for one another. It is, both, metaphor and appetizer......

TAMPOPO's style is really hard to articulate in a simple review. Director Juzo Itami made this film a valentine and spoof of, both, the genre of spaghetti westerns (this, being the first "noodle" western of its kind--literally) as well as Japanese yakuza gangster films. It is at once satirically funny and poignant. Also, nothing is really what it seems. This I will say--you will want to grab a good bowl of soup afterwards.......I'm thinking soba, with a rich broth and maybe even some green onion on the side.

5 out of 5 stars truly delicious.......2007-04-06

I decided to see this film after seeing it mentioned in a lonely planet book about Japanese foods. Intrigued & as a lover of good food, I got it & truly enjoyed the film.

It's a wonderful primer about making good ramen & what it takes to make a truly good ramen. The dedication could be applicable to other foods such as a good burger etc. Since I have not been to Japan & not had japanese ramen noodles, I can't vouch for accuracy but it certainly stimulated a desire to try.

The movie also highlights the observation of John Pawson, the noted minimalist architect, that simplicity is the hardest thing to accomplish & this movie shows that making good ramen takes a lot of effort.

There was a scene where a dying gourmand gangster described that was truly memorable: Hungry wild boars consuming yams during winter are hunted & their intensines are cooked over an open fire. The cooked intensines become yam sausages. This observation was an eye-opener..

The movie also draws a connection between food & eroticism that may not be suitable for children under 13. One scene was quite similar to the food scenes in 9 1/2 weeks but more erotic & inventive.

There is a sense of non-linearity[snippets of stories not connected to main characters] to the story that I enjoyed but other people make not like due to hollywood sensibilities. I liked it also bec it gave a time-stamp of Japan & its people that probably doesnt exist anymore.

People who enjoy cooking & IRON CHEF Japan will really enjoy this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Greatest Vampire Movie of all Time.......2007-06-12

Fright Night is a horror movie in its most simplistic form. A teenage boy named Charlie Brewster (William Ragsdale, "Herman's Head") believes that his next door neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon, "The Princess Bride") is a vampire. Of course no one believes him, especially his girlfriend Amy (Amanda Bearse, "Married with Children") and his buddy "Evil" Ed (Stephen Geoffreys, "Heaven Help Us"). Oh by the way, Evil Ed's classic line in this movie is, "Oh you're so cool Brewster."

Amy and Ed are concerned about Charlie's well being and figure humor his claims that his neighbor is a vampire. So Amy and Ed go to speak to Peter "The Great Vampire Killer" Vincent (Roddy McDowall, "Planet of the Apes"), a burnt out horror movie star turned late night T.V. show host for campy horror films (mainly his own). Charlie is a huge fan of Peter Vincent's work and conceders him a hero. This is why Charlie's friends seek Peter out. On the flip side, Amy and Ed are thinking Charlie's imagination is running amuck about Jerry because of all of his Peter Vincent viewing. Anyway I digress; Amy and Ed talk to Peter about their friend Charlie and the obsession that Jerry is a vampire. Now how two teenage kids are able to convince a movie star (burnt out or not) to speak with their "potential" insane friend, still befuddles me. Anyway, after some pretty definitive proof, it is discovered that Jerry REALLY IS A VAMPIRE! Charlie's confirmation is now fact and the other characters are quite shocked at this finding.

I will not give away any details or spoil this flick for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. Fright Night is really a fun movie and yes it does have some creepy and scary parts to it. I will also add that the movie has some pretty good special effects, they really aren't that cheesy. This movie was also made in 1985, which is the zenith of the 1980s, however this movie really doesn't seem dated. As a matter of fact, it is quite possible this movie is as relative today as it was back in 1985. The one part of the movie that could be abased for having a 1980s flare is the night club scene. There is the peachy music, "colorful" outfits and the hair sprayed hair. Then again, 1980s fashion is somewhat neo in these contemporary times, so it might not seem so dastardly. Ultimately, this movie isn't overshadowed by the fact that it was made in the 1980s.

Now when I say that this is the best vampire movie ever made, that is exactly what I mean. This movie has nothing to do with Dracula it is a basic vampire movie, so any comparisons with a Dracula is dubious. Hence Fright Night it is a marvelous vampire movie, not a marvelous Dracula Movie.

The acting in this movie is also really good; Chris Sarandon is smooth and suave as a vampire. He makes being a creature of the undead look like a lot of fun. Roddy McDowall is awesome as Peter Vincent (I love the throwback to Peter Cushing and Vincent Price in the character's name); he is dichotomy in his grapples with believing in vampires and faith. I think this was a bold performance by McDowall. William Ragsdale did a good job as Charlie. He looked a bit older than a 17 year old teenager, but then again this type of realism isn't why I am watching Fright Night. If that was the logic, then Elizabeth Shue was way too hot to be a hooker in Leaving Las Vegas. Consequently, these are the little persnickety thoughts I place into the box labeled "it is only a movie". Amanda Bearse was also fine as Amy, being both reserved and sexy. Stephen Geoffreys was also quite vexing in a jovial sort of way in his performance as Evil Ed. I also like how Jerry's "roommate" looks like a Xerox of Bill Paxton. Did anyone else notice that or was it just me?

As for the DVD itself, it is presented in letterbox/widescreen. There are several subtitles that can be utilized, so it is foreign speaking friendly. The original preview/trailer is included, which is somewhat a disappointment. It seems rather a mundane promotion for such a great movie. Nevertheless, it is cool that the trailer itself is included on the DVD.

Fright Night is great horror movie period. It also spawned a pretty good sequel in Fright Night 2. However, Fright Night stands fine by itself and I wish future vampire movies would use this movie as a paradigm. Mainly by having a basic story, good characters/acting performance and special effects that don't totally rely on computer graphics. Overall, a timeless piece of horror cinema which I am sure will still be enjoyed for many years to come.

Ol' Charlie has a new neighbor and he turns out to be a blood sucking monster. No one believes Charlie. Not his mother, the police, or his girlfriend. They all believe he is crazy. If only they were right.

This is a horror classic from the mind of Tom Holland (Child's Play). If you've never seen this 80s incarnation of vampire cinema then you've been deprived. Before Vamp and the Lost Boys was the original horror comedy involving teens and the undead.

5 out of 5 stars Wickedly campy romp!.......2007-06-04

This is one of the most memorable horror movies from the 80s, not because it was super scary or anything but because it was such a fun vampire flick. Charlie [William Ragsdale] is a horror buff who is convinced that his new next-door neighbor, Jerry Dandridge is a vampire. He tries to convince his girlfriend Amy [Amanda Bearse] and his best friend Evil to no avail. His last hope is Peter Vincent [Roddy McDowall] a TV actor who plays a vampire killer. The rest of the story deals with their efforts in tracking down and killing the vampire. The acting here is above average, and each character is memorable. William Ragsdale brings a certain earnestness to his role as Charlie, and Amanda Bearse plays the role of love interest to Charlie & Dandridge convincingly. However, the best role is the one of Jerry Dandridge, played most convincingly by Chris Sarandon. He is wickedly evil, with a wry sense of humor and dashing countenance. The storyline may have flaws in it, but this is just a fun vampire movie that should be enjoyed for what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Great 80s horror film.......2007-05-13

As someone who saw almost horror movie made in the 80s, I can tell you that this is one of the better ones. It combines horror and comedy incredibly well and the older actors(Roddy McDowall and Chris Sarandon) deliver incredible spot on performances. The younger group do a good job as well, though they have their moments of "roughness". If you enjoy a great horror movie that is also very funny at the same time(purposely, not campy)...this is the movie for you.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite vampire movie from the 80s.......2007-04-26

Who doesn't like Fright Night?...I haven't met one person yet that didn't enjoy Fright Night. I for one, love this movie and think its one of the best vampire movies from the 80s. Its kinda hard to believe that Amanda Bearse went from this..to Married..with Children....holy smokes!..lol...anyways, again as i said, this movie tops the 80s horror right along with Halloween..etc. etc. and should truly be in your horror collection..a true classic for all time, and remember, they barely play this film during Halloween as well...when is the last time you saw it on TV?...think about it!..thats why this is a must have!. Highly Recommended!!

In most of erotic movies I use the fast forward between the sex parts. but in this movie they did it I have to fast forward through the sex parts. so the sex parts are too slow not well cast. the best thing is the cover of the DVD.

3 out of 5 stars I got this one because of the cover photo..........2006-07-13

I'm a sucker for two beautiful girls doing bad things together, and that cover photo promised at least one hot lesbian encounter on this video. And, in actuality, there were TWO girl/girl scenes. Sadly, neither one of them was particularly good.

The two girls on the box cover are at a sex club of sorts. Their scene together was the weaker of the two. Basically, this other girl is invited to the sex club, and once she arrives this guy tells her to check out the oriental girl and her blonde friend, who then put on a "show" together. It was more mechanical than it was erotic.

Later, the girl goes home and tells her girlfriend about it. Then they both start making out. Their scene was better, but still not all that great.

The video also includes a couple of scenes involving girls with GUYS, but I fast-searched through both of them so I really can't comment on either.

4 out of 5 stars Buy This because of AMANDA AUCLAIR.......2006-08-08

Amanda Auclair is by far one of the most beautiful and sexy woman you will ever see in any film. Even though she is not listed as the star she has as much screen time as any one in the DVD. She is super hot in three scenes, two are with guys one with a girl. The first scene is worth the price of the DVD alone. The second has her in a mask but still is hot. If you like any of the Torchlight releases you can not go wrong with this, a must have for any Amanda Auclair fan.

House of Wax brought Vincent Price into the horror genre, where he fit as snugly as a scalpel in a mad scientist's hand. A remake of the 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum, this entertaining Gothic shocker casts Price as a sculptor of wax figures; his unwilling victims--er, "models"--lend their bodies to his lifelike depictions of Marie Antoinette and Joan of Arc. The film was one of the top 10 moneymakers of its year, thanks in part to the 3-D gimmick, which explains why so many things are aimed at the camera (why else would the paddleball man be there?). Footnote to history: director Andre De Toth was blind in one eye, and thus could not see in three dimensions.

Not at all a musty relic of the early-sound era, the original Mystery of the Wax Museum (shot in a soft, trial version of Technicolor) is saucy, pre-Code fun. As corpses disappear from the morgue, Lionel Atwill's wax museum adds to its displays. Coincidence, or the work of the hideously deformed fiend stalking the Manhattan night? Most of the snappy dialogue comes courtesy of reporter Glenda Farrell, a vintage wisecracking dame. --Robert Horton

    Description

Museum fire turns handsome man into human monster who steals bodies from morgue to create lifelike images in wax.

3 out of 5 stars PLEASE RELEASE THIS IN ANAGLYPH!.......2007-05-28

This movie was originally shot in 3D, and is one of the classic 3D movies with pretty good 3D when presented well-- I have an old VHS recording of House of Wax transmitted in anaglyph over broadcast TV from a decade or two ago, and it still looks pretty hot with red-blue glasses.

However, 3D with shutter glasses is now essentially useless. Most new TVs that people will buy will be LCD and most DVD players progressive scan, which just don't work with 3D. On the other hand, anaglyph should still work on LCD and computer screens. Since this is a black and white movie anyway, anaglyph isn't a bad choice for this movie (the only release I know of currently is "The Bubble" which isn't nearly as good as House of Wax). We need some good anaglyph 3D movies released on DVD, and this is a prime candidate. At any rate, this movie is well worth viewing in 3D anaglyph, and I'll keep watching my old VHS copy while waiting for it to be released in DVD anaglyph 3D.

At first I thought this was the new one and almost gave a bad review.
The new version is not worth watching.
Buy this one in 3D if you can still find it.
It is worth wearing the glasses.

    5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-01-11

A fantastic movie! One of the best Vincent Price movies, imo. Highly recommend.

    5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2006-12-01

This is such a fun, kinda spooky lil movie! I can't believe some crappy b-movie "remake" (yeah, RIGHT!!!) was made recently!! Vincent Price is awesome here! I LOVE Sue's unfortunate buddy, Cathy - "You got all the brains, and all I got is [giggles] what I got!"!! The moment when she "uncovers" the truth about Joan of Arc is chilling, along with its repercussions.

The bonus film, 1933's "Mystery of the Wax Museum", is quite good! I love that it is 20 years older than "House of Wax", yet it is set in then-present-day 1933, whereas "House of Wax" is set at the turn of the 20th century. I find the older film a bit spookier! Both are highly enjoyable, and I recommend you watch 'em :)
