Set in scenic Amsterdam, the darkly comic Siberia follows grifters Hugo and Goof as they earn their keep by fleecing foxy female backpackers. Cocky Hugo (Hugo Metsers Jr. from Band of Brothers) is the ringleader while Goof (Roeland Fernhout) is his trusty companion. Their M.O. is to seduce visiting lovelies who don't speak the language, steal their money, and rip the picture page out of their passport as a memento. It's a cruel, clever, and rather misogynistic way to make a living. Then they meet Russian tourist Lara (Vlatka Simac), whose goal is to return to Siberia (and whose American traveling companion happens to be played by Baywatch's Nicole Eggert). Just as Hugo warns him not to, Goof falls for the enigmatic beauty and all hell breaks loose. Lara, as it turns out, is on to her would-be seducers--and can be just as cruel and clever. Robert Jan Westdijk's sophomore effort is an entertainingly mean spirited (and occasionally sexually explicit) romp set, like Run Lola Run, to an energetic techno beat. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Best friends Hugo and Goof set up a scam picking up female backpackers newly arrived in Amsterdam. They sleep with them, rob them, and then tear a page out of their passports to keep as a souvenir, since the boys' goal is to take a trip around the world from within Amsterdam. Their set-up is quickly threatened when seasoned traveler Lara enters the fray. Appropriately named, Goof immediately falls in love with her and becomes obsessed with the idea of taking her to Siberia to see the country of her childhood. Now that the rules of the game have changed between Hugo and Goof, life becomes very complicated for everyone involved in this fast-paced caper of who's hustling who?

Amazon.com essential video
During an unusual chapter in the career of director Akira Kurosawa (Rashomon), the filmmaker went to Russia because he found working in his native Japan to be too difficult. The result was this striking 1975 near-epic based on the turn-of-the-century autobiographical novels of a military explorer (Yuri Solomin) who met and befriended a Goldi man in Russia's unmapped forests. Kurosawa traces the evolution of a deep and abiding bond between the two men, one civilized in the usual sense, the other at home in the sub-zero Siberian woods. There's no question that Dersu Uzala (the film is named for the Goldi character, played by Maxim Munzuk) has the muscular, imaginative look of a large-canvas Soviet Mosfilm from the 1970s. But in its energy and insight it is absolutely Kurosawa, from its implicit fascination with the meeting of opposite worlds to certain moments of tranquility and visual splendor. But nothing looks like Kurosawa more than a magnificent action sequence in which the co-heroes fight against time and exhaustion to stay alive in a wicked snowstorm. For fans of the late legend, this is a Kurosawa not to be missed. --Tom Keogh
Description
Against a backdrop of the treacherous mountains, rivers and icy plains of the Siberian wilderness, acclaimed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa (The Seven Samurai, Rashomon) stages an extraordinary adventure of comradeship and survival. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Customer Reviews:
I love it.......2007-05-27
Of all Kurosawa's movies, I have to admit this is the one I'm most inclined to watch again and again, which is so odd because it's his "Russian exile" movie and not at all Japanese.
I particularly think the RUSCICO version produced by the Russian government is great, even though it suffers from the same flaw that others have mentioned with the Criterion version -- the print needs to be painstakingly restored to fix the spots where the colors have degraded over the course of time. It's worth it.
The Russian version has three (very good) dubbed languages and about 14 subtitled languages, but in the end the important thing is just to be able to hear the actors in Russian and understand them.
The story itself is slower than a lazy river, which is great for me but somebody who's waiting for things to blow up won't last long enough for Dersu to appear a few minutes into the movie. This is basically a buddy movie where all the buddies do is hike around through the woods and survey the lay of the land while trying not to let nature kill them (although there are brushes with a couple of criminal elements). It's a great movie for nature lovers and people who want to believe in a more humane era for Russia.
One of my favorite Kurosawa films..........2007-05-26
This is one of my favorite Kurosawa films, and one that is part of a very select phenomenon. Kurosawa couldn't find financing in Japan during this time period, so he turned to the USSR for financing of this film, one of only two films (the other being Dodeskaden) that Kurosawa made in the 1970's. The film is so quinessentially Russian, both in its language, themes, and character. You'd swear it was directed by a Russian, but Kurosawa is obviously not Russian. Only a few filmmakers (Kubrick for A Clockwork Orange, Tarkovsky for The Sacrifice, and most recently, Eastwood for Letters from Iwo Jima) have managed to submerge themselves in a foreign culture and make a film worthy of it. I originally saw this film in a pan and scan version, and it had absolutely no impact. Seeing it widescreen on DVD is so much better. It's a completely different film, and a great one at that. Another great thing about this film is the subtitles. Dersu Uzala, the main character, speaks broken Russian, and the subtitles are translated in broken English (even though you understand them). Dersu is not stupid, just not educated. Educated people can be quite stupid at times, so having a degree doesn't mean you're smart. Some have complained about the poor quality of the transfer. The film was shot in 70mm Sovcolor. Soviet film stock was notoriously inconsistent. Many films shot in the former Soviet Union had many problems with out of date film stock, or film stock that had already deteriorated, but due to bureacracy, a lot of times directors would shoot with the bad footage and later learn it was defective (Tarkovsky had this experience on the film Stalker, and it forced him to start over from scratch after shooting a large part of the film). The film itself is magnificent, with some incredible widescreen photography and wonderful vistas of Siberia (contrary to popular belief, some of Siberia is lush forest land, it's not all tundra and ice). It's one of my favorite Kurosawa films, and it's a good illustration of his later style (longer takes, slower pace, more meditative), which I like more than his earlier work.
Anamorphic Widescreen DVD available on region 2 BUT DON'T BUY IT!.......2007-03-05
WARNING WARNING!
Region 2 DVD is now available from amazon.co.uk with English subtitles.
However anamorphic, the picture quality is HORRIBLE, nearly unwatchable. Probably like the region 1.
The worst shimmering NTSC effects I have ever seen, colours change about 4 times per 2 seconds, from green to blue to cream to gray and again and again. Througout the film.
The DVD also claims to have subtitles in about 15 languages. IT DOESN'T!!
Only English.
Don't buy from this label, they are liars!
A Different Kind Of Kurosawa Film: A Film About Friendship And Aging!.......2007-01-15
First of all, I would like to write that this film needs to be restored by CRITERION, it definitely needs a major makeover. Also, while I have this in my collection; I did not really appreciate this film when I first viewed it. I do now. This was the first film by director Akira Kurosawa after his attempted suicide. And although he was still in a state of depression when doing this film, the film succeeds; and when I viewed it again last night, after a several year period, I thought about Kurosawa, and how different this film was from his other films. And maybe this was due to his state of mind at the time. Moreover, I found the film to be excellent. The film is set in the forests of Siberia in the 19th-century. The film centers on the friendship of Captain Vladimir Arseniev (Yuri Solomin) and an inhabitant of the frozen Taiga, named Dersu Uzala (Maksim Munzuk).
Those who are used to Kurosawa's earlier films, such as RASHOMON, YOJIMBO, or SEVEN SAMURAI among others; do not compare this film to those ones, this is a distinctly different film. Furthermore, it is a great film worthy of any of his previous ones. This is a story about both friendship, and growing old. In the film, a Russian captain, Arseniev, begins a friendship with a man of the Taiga named Dersu Uzala. Dersu even rescues Arseniev when he is trapped in a frozen lake. For the Russian Captain, he is out of his elements, and relies on Dersu many times. However, Dersu knows his elements: Or does he? For Dersu, survival in the frozen wastes of Siberia is a way of life. Yet when Dersu kills a tiger, it's like a curse has been placed on him. His tribe believes that a ghost, Kanga, rules the Taiga, and therefore he will be punished. Dersu begins to have difficulty killing his prey, and even his eyesight worsens.
Finally, when Captain Arseniev sees the horror one night on Dersu's face, [who is expecting Kanga to send the Tiger to kill him], he offers Dersu to come to his hometown. During the Russian expedition in Siberia, these two men have developed a very strong friendship and affection for one another. As the viewer you cannot help but empathize with Dersu, knowing that he is the one who is no longer comfortable in his elements. Moreover, you begin to see that as an old man, Dersu no longer is safe in his once comfortable Taiga. Also, the friendship these two men share is very strong. This film is great, and for those who have viewed it once before, and maybe did not particularly care for the film, try watching it again. Maybe because I am getting older I am seeing things I did not when I was younger. This film is a truly great Kurosawa film. Plus the cinematography, beautiful scenes, and music are outstanding. One big caveat, however, is that the film needs to be restored. It deserves more treatment than it has been given at present. Highly recommended. [Stars: 4.5]
Dersu Uzala.......2007-01-05
Kurosawa at his finest. A poignant, sad, and at times humorous tale of an unlikely friendship between two men living very different lives in very different places. A must-see.

Blake's words "Tyger, tyger burning bright" come alive in this lush documentary from National Geographic. Tigers of the Snow spotlights the Siberian Tiger, which once roamed over the wide ranges of northern Asia but now is limited to a tiny region on the Sea of Japan. Footage of their active muscles, their piercing eyes, their regal pelt, all attest to the beauty of a dying breed. Russian and American scientists have banded together to study the 300 remaining not-so-gentle giants in an effort to save them from extinction. You'll see these men and women track tigers from helicopters, brave a mother's fury to tag her young, and strive to breed them in captivity. The effort is Herculean, given the massive logging and rampant poaching which cuts down the population and the tigers' territory, but there is hope that we can educate the next generation to protect these beautiful animals and their environment while there's still time. After all, a planet without tigers would be a much poorer place, and Tigers of the Snow shows exactly what we'd miss. --Rob Lightner

"Hope Is The Last To Die." .......2007-04-28
I have always had an interest in the big cats, and have had a particular interest in the Siberian tiger since reading the compelling book "Tigers in the Snow" by Peter Matthiessen and Maurice Hornocker, which I also recommend. These beautiful cats have been hunted to near extinction since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and are now extremely endangered by the twin perils of poaching and industrial deforestation.
This documentary is an absolute must see for anyone who cares about the potential extinction of these magnificent creatures: it is brilliantly made and photographed, well written and narrated, and emotionally compelling. The film documents the Siberian tiger, the biggest cat on earth (males are up to ten feet long and weight up to 660 pounds) and the perils it faces. Unfortunately the single biggest peril it faces is poaching. The pelt alone can bring over $10,000 on the black market, and various other parts are used in medical quackery. I was nearly moved to tears in the introduction as video of a poaching operation was shown. The fear on the cat's face is haunting, and while I wouldn't show it to a child, I think it's important to see the senseless violence for what it is. Sadly, the Russian agents must destroy the pelts and other items of contraband made from the tigers when they catch the poachers to ensure they never get to market and support further demand for tiger products. Watching the agents burn tiger pelts was one of the saddest things I have ever seen.
The bulk of the film follows Russian and American researchers working in tandem to track, study, and save these beautiful creatures. Their love for the animals is clear in the risks they take in their studies: rappelling from a helicopter into the forest with a partially sedated tiger, tagging the ear of a cub in his den while his mother hunts, giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to an adult male tiger with labored breathing, etc.: we can all be glad that they take these risks in the effort to conserve the Siberian tigers, and unravel the mysteries of their lives.
Also on the DVD are several bonus features including still photos and a very interesting documentary, "Tiger's Eye," about photographing tigers in India. I enjoyed all the extras immensely.
The Russians have an old proverb "Hope is the last to die." These researchers and filmmakers are doing everything in their power to keep hope alive for the Siberian tigers, and I wish them the best for us and all the future generations who deserve to know these beautiful, majestic, and endangered creatures.
Fantastic!!.......2007-01-12
Great movie about the lifestyle and endangerment of siberian tigers. How they are studied, breeding, cubs in captivity, conservation. Wonderful movie
Extremely well-made and interesting documentary.......2005-07-17
Superb footage of these very elusive, nearly extinct cats in the Siberian wilds. Typical National Geographic production, which is to say: well made movie, nice and clear narration, clear photography. For those of you who are into watching live chases of prey by predators, there isn't much here. But you won't be bored by the documentary at all. There are many riveting moments when you are holding your breath to see what's going to happen next. This is certainly a DVD to buy and keep.
At the end, I was in awe of the pioneering work being done by the Russian and American scientists portrayed in this movie. Also in despair about how man is destroying the last of the few remaining major jungles in the world, all in the name of lumber so that we can have nicer and nicer furniture, and more meat (by raising cattle on land that was previously forested) - but no fresh air or water.
Nice movies about the Siberian Tigers.......2005-03-26
A nice one about the Siberian Tiger. It tells about the endangered tigers of Siberia and the efforts to save them. The videography is very good and all in all it is an interesting and educative movie for wildlife lovers.
Not much!.......2003-09-23
There was not very much footage of the tigers here. It looks like the fillmakers spent a lot of time in some town in Siberia, which is apparently a lot like white trash America. So instead of feeling taken away, I felt like I was taken back to the Ohio. Also, the scientists spend lot of time looking for tigers or avoiding seeing the tigers so they don't get eaten. And not much time actually running with the tigers.
There is one really cool part about hunting tigers from a helicopter (with dart guns to put radio trackers on them.) They should make a video game out of that part.
I think the whole idea of a nature documentary about one animal sounds good on paper, but it works a lot better to watch a documentary about a geographic region - you get more variety in your movie.

Untangling the Mystery/Myth of Kabalistic Influences in Art.......2006-06-15
Filmed on location in Jerusalem, Paris, Moscow and St. Petersburg, this is an exciting and mysterious film. The cinematography within Russia is outstanding. The filming technique uses reality shots of unknown, unsuspecting Russian people to create scenes which enhance the story line. There are scenes of Russians going about their daily lives, street scenes, people on buses, riding taxis, and taking trains ... scenes that enhance and highly effectively build up suspense within the film. There is subtle humor in unexpected ways. The art dealer Daniel (Jerome Koenig) who is originally from New York but had moved to Israel, has a successful art gallery in Paris. He has uniquely humorous experiences in Russia as he tracks down an art collection he had inherited from an Uncle who died ...
The title "Golem" comes from a Jewish myth which means a creature brought to life by a rabbi or group of rabbis who know the secret word which breathes life into a man-made creation. The story unfolds as Daniel makes plans to visit Russia and get permission from the Russian Embassy to find and bring back the art collection, inherited from a deceased Uncle. He anticipates it is very valuable. He needs to tie up some loose ends in Paris with a partner Marsha (Hanna Schygulla) who runs his art gallery. Little does Daniel realize the region of Siberia called Biderbijon is where his Uncle lived. In the 1910s - 1920s Jews had settled there due to the promise of self-governance and autonomy, that is until the pogroms began by Stalin. The film gathers momentum as Daniel arrives in Russia and obtains the necessary paperwork to receive his inheritance. He finds the object ... a seven foot lower arm and hand from what would have been a giant statue. He imagines the immense value of this piece, knowing his Uncle had very excellent taste and knew great art.
The arrival in Russia when hailing a taxi was humorous, especially when the taxi driver who knew some English made some business propositions. Daniel was taken to the Russian Embasssy where other funny moments ocurred as he maneuvered through the bureacracy. After navigating the system, he finally obtained the art collection which turned out to be a seven foot statue of a forearm and right hand. There are hilarious scenes in the film when Daniel is taken to his hotel via taxi while the giant hand sits on a rack on roof of the taxi which makes the forefinger appear to be pointing ahead as if giving directions. Needless to say, it gets a lot of attention by passerbys. At the Russian hotel, the clerk knows very little English and Daniel knows even less Russian, he is told his room number is "979" on the fifth floor. Each floor has a receptionist and trying to locate his room was very funny. He received a visit from a mysterious lady who had heard about his statue, she offered to provide him information as she worked in an antiquities library ...
After this point in the story, the mystery deepens. Daniel learns about the Golem and suspects the hand and partial arm have some mysterious origins. He feels the need to visit Biderbijon, the Siberian town where his Uncle died and which was a Jewish settlement long ago. On the train ride to this remote location he meets a Russian who plays an important role in Daniel's understanding of his inherited piece of "artwork." After Daniel returns to Paris presumably with very valuabe art from Russia ... Marsha is astounded that he brings back touristy type trinkets, cheap Russian souveniers which she plays with as Daniel tells her about the unusual experiences he had in Russia and why he visited Biderbijon. The film is superbly crafted, it cleverly ties together the myth and mystery associated with the Kabala along with Jewish history, while it unravels a secret. Throughout the film, the viewer is hooked on the suspense while laughing at the humorous episodes within the Russian cultural context as Daniel, a foreigner, tries to achieve his objectives.

Opening in 1905, a woman writes a letter to a young man in military school, who is currently being punished for refusing to say that Mozart is a bad composer. She has an important story to tell him, and our story flashes back 20 years to Russia, where American Jane Calllahan (Julia Ormond), is traveling to Moscow. Jane's father, Douglas McCracken (Richard Harris), is trying to perfect a machine that will harvest trees from the vast Siberian forests. Douglas, however, hopes Jane can charm Gen. Radlov (Alexei Petrenko), the head of a Russian military academy, into arranging the financing that will enable him to complete his work on the harvester. En route, Jane meets a friendly Russian soldier, Andrei Tolstoy (Oleg Menshikov), and the two soon fall in love. Radlov is also fond of Jane, enough so that he's asked her to marry him; when it becomes evident she'd rather be with Tolstoy, he finds himself shipped off to Siberia after allegedly attacking a grand duke. Merging romance, costume drama and slapstick comedy, The Barber of Siberia was screened at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.
