Editorial Review:

This Billy Crystal vehicle suffers from too much sentimentality that competes with the outrageous physical comedy, but still manages to be funny enough to be worth a look. Crystal plays a shallow sports agent on tour in Eastern Europe, smarting from the separation from his wife and kid, when he literally crashes into a discovery that might resurrect his career. He finds a giant in a rural town (NBA Basketball player Gheorghe Muresan) and takes him back to America in the hopes of exploiting his find, but soon discovers that loyalty and being true to the things that are important to him are what really matters. It's the physical comedy and the contrast between the titanic Muresan and the diminutive Crystal that sustains the movie beyond its premise. Crystal's personality and Muresan's genuine nature make My Giant rise above its gimmicky nature. --Robert Lane

2 out of 5 stars Not Captivating.......2007-04-08

I was predisposed to like this film, but was disappointed in the weakness of the plot and the hackneyed one-line put downs constantly exchanged between the two protangonists. It starts with the two vaudeville stars doing their routine on stage, while in the wings a girl is waiting with her dad for a "shotgun" style wedding for either of the two. They escape, leaving Australia looking for any kind of available employment. It turns out deep sea diving is the sole remaining option.

Princess Lala, who is half Scottish becomes the romantic target of both suitors. The indingenous people arrange a marriage ceremony whereby both men are going to marry her, although neither realize they are sharing a bride. This plan is destroyed by another authority on the island who wants to make her his latest bride to add to his collection. It's at this point that the plot breaks down and it seems they wanted to just end the script in the alloted time.

Cameo appearances by well-known movie stars of the era are interspersed. If you don't watch carefully you'll miss them however. The most creative part is the conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Road to Bali.......2007-03-16

Got it very fast and it is a great movie. Of course with old Blue eyes and Bob Hope. It had to be.

2 out of 5 stars Forgettable.......2007-02-12

The plot was OK, but the songs were forgettable--almost painful--and the dancing was amateurish. I found myself fast forwarding through a lot. However, the comedic exchanges between Bing and Bob were fun.

3 out of 5 stars Slapstick with a Setting Reminiscent of Gilligan's Island.......2007-01-17

Two comedians entertain us. While traveling, one sleeps below the train (risky!). When playing on bagpipes and in Scottish suits, they kick each other. There are other humorous scenes throughout this flick.

They land on a tropical island somewhere in the southern Pacific Ocean. Each one assumes that he will be the one to marry Princess Lalah. And, similar to the characters in Gilligan's Island, they have to deal with such things as wild beasts (in this case, the affections of a gorilla), natives and their poison darts, an angry volcano, and the imminent prospect of being beheaded. So who actually gets to marry Princess Lalah? I will not spoil the ending by revealing it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of Billy Crystal's Very Best .......2006-12-06

This is mainly a romance movie, but also a comedy. It's a movie about friendship, compassion, and love. Very unique & Excellent.

2 out of 5 stars The Movie that ended both of Georghe Murasan's careers!.......2006-09-20

Georghe Murasan was a 7'7" Roumanian
Basketball Centre who Comedian (sup-
posedly) Billy Crystal tabbed to c0-
star with him in this surprisingly
unfunny Comedy about a Talent(less)
Talent agent, Sammy Kamin, who goes
to Eastern Europe to find 'the next
big thing', and he literally does!
Murasan, who injured his ankle so
badly in this film just jumping
across a stream in what became an
outtake scene, that he only came
back and played one more NBA game
(0-1 shooting for New Jersey), is
a tame, gentle giant in a Monestary
that Pulls Kamin out of his upside-
down in a stream rental car and
saves the losers life. I really
hate to put Crystal, who like
myself is a rabid L.A. Clippers
fan, but this movie is just not
very good. The ending, where the
smarmy Kamin gets his come-uppense
is solid but along the way we en-
counter a wrestling scene (NATU-
RALLY!) AND a vulgar Rabbi, play
ed by ex-McHale's Navy vet Carl
Ballantine, who eats pork! If
this your idea of humour, you might
like it but I didn't!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2006-06-12

This movie was about a giant who meets an agent(Billy Crystal). They travel to United States and appear in a couple of movies. This movie shows the relationship of the two people, and the relationship improves throughout the movie. If this movie didn't have Billy Crystal it would of been a failure, but since it did it was funny and enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars BIG STAR ON THE HORIZON.......2006-01-17

The relationship between self-centered agent Billy Crystal and real-life NBA star Gheorghe Muresan is the main reason to watch this otherwise sentimental, few laughs comedy. Crystal is his usual competent self in a role obviously written with him in mind. In his film debut, Muresan brings an affable presence in his role as a 7 1/2 ft. giant Crystal stumbles on while visiting his current client in Romania. The young actor (Rider Strong) fires Crystal and Crystal decides to put the rather naive giant into the same movie. Muresan agrees only to find the love his youth who now lives in Galloop, USA. (Gallup, New Mexico). A subplot involves Crystal's failed marriage with Kathleen Quinlan (who doesn't get to do a whole lot, but is always watchable). Martial arts star Steven Segal plays himself, and Joanna Pacula appears as the rather disappointing love of Muresan's life. Hokey and often trite, MY GIANT is fun to watch because of its two stars.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2004-12-04

I have watch this movie for 4 times and I intend to watch it again. I think Gheorge Muresan so sweet.

    Description

Funnyman Billy Crystal leads the laugh parade in Forget Paris (Disc 1/Side A) plus two more comedies to remember. First, frazzled basketball referee Billy and airline employee Debra Winger fall head over croissants in love in Paris, become husband and wife, then wonder if love can survive marriage. In Fathers' Day (Disc 1/Side B), a comedy Dream Team - Crystal and Robin Williams - joins forces to hunt the missing teen each man thinks might be his son. And struggling talent agent Crystal finds the next BIG action star (7'7" basketball player Gheorghe Muresan) in My Giant (Disc 2). No doubt about it. This is comedy that's heads above the crowd.

      Description

SHOW #1: ROAD TO BALI The only color film in the 'Road' series, it starts off in Australia, with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby performing a song and dance act. It's not long before they are on the lam, fleeing to Bali, where they encounter Princess Dorothy Lamour. Complications ensue, finding Bob battling a giant octopus, while Bing gets entwined in the arms of Dorothy. Inside jokes, add-libs, awful puns and delightful musical numbers highlight this rollicking movie, featuring a surprise cameo by Jane Russell. For fans of Bing, Bob and Dottie, and all who love comedy at its best. Approx: 90 min.

SHOW #2: ON THE ROAD WITH BOB AND BING Comedian Bob Hope and crooner Bing Crosby first met on a radio show, and quickly became fast friends. Legend has it that at a golf game the two were having so much fun constantly wisecracking that they decided to make a movie together. A script was found, (originally tailored for George Burns and Gracie Allen!), and singer-actress Dorothy Lamour was cast as the love interest Bing and Bob would fight over. Originally, a one shot deal, The Road to Singapore proved a big money maker for Paramount Studios, and a sequel soon followed, soon turning into a series of some of the funniest movies ever made. For Lamour, who caught the public's fancy as an exotic beauty wearing her trademark sarong in movies such as The Hurricane, the 'Road' series became a popular venue for her to show off her singing and comic skills. Lamour proved a perfect foil for the boys as they competed for the sultry beauty's affections. Here are Bob and Bing on the 'Road' together, featuring the original theatrical trailers. Approx. 15 min.

      Product Description

My Baby Discovers Latin America - DVD. DVD is in Spanish. Mi bebé discovers latin america is a video that stimulates babies brain development while familiarizing them with the Latin American culture and values. Mi bebé discovers latin america introduces Latin American rhythms using a beautifully arranged collection of instrumental melodies composed exclusively for this video. Its music is not only stimulating to little ones, but enjoyable to parents as well. The original Latin American music mixes perfectly with the colorful puppets, friendly babies and educational toys to create a magic and fun environment for children to discover their bicultural world.

4 out of 5 stars A fine DVD for Latin American kids.......2007-02-05

I am a little surprised about the backlash against this video. From the quality perspective, it is almost on par with the baby Einstein like videos. They too are very simple as this video is. People need to remember that very young children should not be exposed to the type of lightning flash changes of scenery that some experts say can help cause ADD and children do not need high tech for their brains to be stimulated. Plus, children love puppets and music. My two kids have always liked this video and would sit still through at least 10 minutes of it when they were 12 months or younger, which is pretty good. Now that they are older they can sit through the whole thing. They always liked this video much better than the Baby Estein set - probably because the music and colors are much closer to what they are used to in our bi-cultural home. Finally, if you are looking for a video to teach your child Spanish, this is not it. Probably no video will do that for you. Children should be emmersed in the culture and those who want to teach another language need to speak to their children regularly in that language. However, any video in Spanish can reinforce the language. This one or others.

      1 out of 5 stars Truly dissappointed..........2006-12-21

I bought this DVD for my grandaughter, hoping she would learn some Spanish through it (my native language). What a dissappointment! There is almost no language involved, and I truly dislike the sad Latin- American stereotypes. Also, it is obviously a very low-quality production.

I would recommend the DVDs by A LA VIBORA DE LA MAR, as a much MUCH better option (see my reviews).

1 out of 5 stars Not Latin OR Educational!.......2006-01-01

Honestly, this is one of the worst videos I have EVER seen. I was shocked to see home video production quality -- like somebody created this video in their living room. Cheap puppets on a back sheet or white sheet back ground.
And neither the music or the content was Latin or educational. Once in a blue moon a voice would say a color in spanish -- but the word was only said once and had nothing visual to back it up.
The description says it teaches Latin culture and values... HOW? By showing a store bought baby mobile and toy cars on a race track and a pineapple puppet? Right.
This is basically some folks out to sell cheap toys with a cheap video.
      I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

5 out of 5 stars This DVD is better than Baby Einstein-It has the Latin Touch.......2005-01-21

My Baby, Daniel, is seven months and we have use the baby einstein videos since he was two months. He enjoys those. However, my husban and I didn't feel that this videos where able to help us to show him our world- Latin America. At this stage, I'm looking for valuable tools to stimulate my child and "Mi Bebé Discovers Latin America" is fantastic to acomplish that in a great way for my baby. The music has different rithms from my beloved land like merengue, cumbia and tango. This is not a video to learn Spanish, but to learn about our heritage throughout music, didactic images and playful puppets that by the way are so original- like the pam tree. We are truly satisfy! If you are from latin america and like the Baby Einstein videos like Mozart, then this video is right for you.

      1 out of 5 stars Not as I expected.......2005-01-20

This DVD consists of hand puppets, music and an occasional Spanish word. It covers only colors and shapes. It might be good with a Spanish-speaking adult to guide the child, but It really doesn't do much to teach Spanish. I noticed that one other reviewer had my same opinion. I believe that this DVD is not much better than a home video. I purchased several other products that were much better. Check out other reviews and make your choices. I am returning this product.

4 out of 5 stars Pure.. Plain... Fun!.......2003-01-16

This review refers to the Platinum Disc Corp DVD edition of "Road to Bali".......

Hope and Crosby..., I could just leave this review at that, their names say it all! But okay, I will fill you in on this little treasure and the DVD quality. This is the 6th in the road series films made by our boys. This one made in 1953 is in technicolor and looks great!

Bob and Bing are traveling the high seas in this one. They're on the run from Australia, where a pair of irate fathers are after them with shotguns, oops make that boomerangs,to make them keep their promises of marriage to the daughters. The chase is on and they guys wind up taking a job as deep sea divers, hired by some royal islanders.Once there they only have to deal with a giant squid, poison darts, and an evil prince in their escapades. Naturally they both fall for the same girl, the beautiful princess LaLa played by the Dorothy Lamour, their cohort in the other road movies as well.

The one liners are never ending and will keep you chuckling even though it may seem a little silly at times. No matter though. They cleverly talk to the camera and there is the added pleasure of spying lots of famous faces (in cameos) throughout the film. And let's not forget all the wonderful song and dance routines we are always lucky to see with these guys!

I just had to check this DVD out, as the price was right and I love the old comedies. I'm glad I did. The film really looks good on this one. The technicolor is vivid and the picture is clear and sharp. The sound in Dolby Digital(mono) is good.Platinum has made a nice transfer..but..the case needs a little work..it fell apart(but still okay to keep the DVD in it). Don't look for any extras, just 90 minutes of fun with Bob, Bing and Dorothy!

After the view you'll still be smiling and saying.."thanks for the memories.."....Have fun...Laurie
