1 out of 5 stars How low can you go ?.......2007-05-17

First of all,I have seen every film Miss Mansfield has appeared in (except ''It happened in Athens'' and ''The George Raft Story''.
''The Fat Spy'' is in my opinion her worst, and Lord knows that she played in several bombs.
The reason she appears ''fat'' as one reviewer noticed,is because she was pregnant, and if you watched very closely you will notice that the cameraman did his best to conceal her ''condition''.
Don't get me wrong,I am a big fan of psychotronic movies,high-camp,grade Z,''straight-to-the drive-in'' type of movies.
However this particular is soooooooo bad, that it is difficult to watch in one viewing.
It seems to want to be a ''Beach party'' type of movie, then some kind of musical, then comedy,to end up in a nightmare.
This movie with a really low quality soundtrack, should only be purchased by die-hard fans who are determined to own EVERY film Miss Jayne Mansfield appeared in.
The interesting cast is totally wasted, and I use this expression in the 2 senses of the word. And wouldn't you be if you were to be involved in such a turkey? I think you would
Trivia:Jayne was pregnant with Mariska in this film. She was also pregnant with Mickey Jr. during the filming of ''The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw''

1 out of 5 stars Take Me to your Greenhouse Baby.......2006-02-16

This film is a bunch of disjointed skits. Thy try too hard to be campy; however with not enough lead and no finish each disjointed sketch just leaves you wanting. There are a few made-up ersatz songs and Jayne Mansfield's accoutrements; aside from those everything else is flat.

There are a few personalities but they never shine:
Phyllis Diller (fully clothed)
Brian Donlevy (storms the beach)
Jayne Mansfield (always points north)
The Wild Ones (People Sure Act Strange)

The introductory song was the best part of the film.

A final thought "Love is a rose, but you better not pick it"

1 out of 5 stars "The Fat Nothing".......2005-12-29

Horrible movie, only worth watching if you are a Jayne Mansfield or Phyllis Diller fan. Movie looks like it was cheaply filmed and only uses about 4 scenes in entire movie. However, if you like cartoons, than you might like this movie. The singer Laurie Berger is the funniest when she sings and dances her solo. Save your money for a fast food burger.

Here's a film where all the actors and actresses know they're funny, but somehow it doesn't traslate into a funny movie. This film is far more irritating than enjoyable. Frantic disjointed and sloppy, this cinematic bomb could fall into the worst movie of all time catagory. Too many shots of actors looking smug and hamming it up after saying their lines.

A pity, because all that talent is wasted.

My 11 year old son found this film to be tiresome after 20 minutes.

People who claim this movie is funny are probably not well.

5 out of 5 stars Big laughs are like a giant feast too much of a good thing.........2003-09-20

Off the coast of Florida, a nearly deserted island is rumored to have the fountain of youth. A boatload of teenagers are headed there for a scavenger hunt. Wellington, the island's weathly owner, is none too happy about that, so he sends his daughter, Junior (Jane Mansfield) to get ride of them. She is happt to go, because her boyfriend, Irving, is the island's only resident. Is the fountain of youth real, and if so, who will get to it first? The laughs along the way are bountiful, not unlike the remarkable mansfield.

2 out of 5 stars "Just Awful but something keeps you tuned in".......2006-09-01

I bought this for $3.00 at a drug store here in Chicago. Basically, I bought it because it had Jayne Mansfield and Phyllis Diller. I did enjoy the singing and dance numbers even if a few of the songs were just plain bad! The kids looked great and appeared to be having a fun time. It's just 78 min. of one vignette type of scene after another.
It did do something positive for me, that is, it helped me fall asleep nocturnal creature that I am. If you like odd beach party flicks, but not the Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello franchise this movie is for you. This had a hint of John Water's brand of wry humor but more of an innocent vain; as I am a major John Waters fan- and Russ Meyer too!

2 out of 5 stars Campy, weird and boring....but starring Jayne.......2005-12-09

When I bought this movie I thought "God: all the reviews are talking about a boring and absolutely unbearable movie"
Yet I bought it ...only because of Jayne (and because of a low price)
Script is for kids and boring, picture is not good, looks like a typical so-low-budget film.
But Jayne left us when she was so young that I enjoy each opportunity to see her (no matter the quality)
...And since there is now the fashion for kitsch campy films which are becoming hip when you watch them with friends and nibbles...
Less dangerous than bloody violent movies.
so watch it and forget it
and anyway better for Mansfield enthusiasts!
NB ; look at that beautiful other girl running on the beach with long dark hair, terrific figure and cute face (she doesn't speak but runs and dances all the time): she's actress Linda Hamilton who played Nova in the 1968 version of "Planete of the Apes"

1 out of 5 stars Words cannot describe..........2005-05-06

Oh lord, what was I thinking when I bought this movie!
Oh yes, any movie with Jayne Mansfield must be worth watching, it can't be that bad. Well, a year ago I bought all the dvds available on amazon.com with her. I have just watched this.
3 years ago I bought the "Promises, Promises" video and loathed it. Now if I try to remember it, I see flashes of good looking Jayne. Well you know how it goes, time makes all things look better. It even makes you think a stinker like that wasn't so bad.
Well and here comes "The Fat Spy". Can't be that bad I thought. I opens with 2 guys singing a catchy song, which still turns in my head. Then you see a company boss who is giving orders to her daughter, played by Jayne Mansfield. He is sitting at his desk watching towards the camera, as if his interlocutor is on the other side of the desk. But Jayne is standing right beside him.
Is someone not shown in the picture? Was this filmed in Cinerama (R) and he's been cut-off? Or is it just the movie was filmed? Some madcap trick? A way to spare money because they only had one camera and having the actors speak lines while standing next to each other would solve the problem? Seems like it.
Then cut to a bunch of youngsters driving a boat to an island. The plot is unintelligible as the scenes seem to be trown in the movie like that. They start singing and dancing like in a beach movie. Some awkward dances, balloons explaining what's happening. The scene where at the end the girls get into the boat while the guys walk on the pier and start singing, well, I thought that it was the girls turn to get wet and pick up the boys, who stay dry this way. Some singing solo, the most awful one being by the girl in blue bikini, especially her dance movies while singing LOL. Horrible, just horrible.
Jayne Mansfield sports an awful hairstyle (if you can call it that), she lives up to her reputation as just trying to act like MM, and there is not one other actor that can be called one here.
The only redeemable parts are when JM flies to the island, because she acts silly and looks great with helmets (really) and when she holds her boyfriend at gunpoint.
Phyllis Diller, well, she must be worst of the lot here. I love her but here, oh well, she just plain sucks. Her name is funny though (Camille Salamandre). She looks so weird, why does she always have frizzy hair and wears make up only on her upper eyelids??
To tell the truth, I was bored out of my mind, couldn't wait to get it over with, and, counting on the movie ending at 75min as the cover says, I checked my dvd player and it said there were other 6 minutes of it. I thought I was gonna die!!!
JC completist will have to see it to understand how bad it is, nothing could stop them.

1 out of 5 stars Certainly the worst movie in the world!.......2005-03-23

Being in the movie industry, I can assure you, I forced myself to watch it until the end to understand how bad a movie could be as this one is best example!
this is a boring, stupid and pointless... sorry I can't call it a movie as it would be an insult to the real ones! Jayne Mansfield... why the hell she accepted to be in it??? was she so desesperate to get some money? Oh well I guess this movie is certainly the worst movie ever so if you want to know what's a bad movie, watch it, seriously...

1 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst movie I've seen.......2004-11-23

I purchased this movie without reading the reviews, based only on my fondness for older movies and the other movies I've seen the two main stars in. This movie was awful, and the sad part is, there were sooooo many opportunities to save the movie all throughout. The acting was obviously overdone on purpose, I just wish I knew why - it didn't come off as funny or as a satire if that was the intent. In the end - I threw out the DVD so as not to accidently subject someone else to it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Captain Scarlett Gets a Decent Transfer!.......2006-07-23

Captain Scarlett is a much under rated movie patterned after Robin Hood and often compared. Of course it's not as good as the best swashbuckler ever! It is fun, and since it was filmed back in 1953 (in technicolor) it has the feel of the greats like Robin Hood and Ivanhoe, and Scaramouche; an undefinable something that just isn't carried over to the 21st century modern remakes. A good portion of the film was shot out of doors, and the acting and costumes get an above average rating. All that being said, i had an old poor quality vhs copy i thought I'd upgrade. I tried the Family Value "digitally remastered" dvd first and the movie wasn't even on the dvd! I found another version; and again I was ripped off; the transfer was defective, and the movie was later actually recalled by the maker and substituted by another 2 in 1 movie WITHOUT Captain Scarlett! I'd just about given up hope of ever finding this movie on any format, when i stumbled on this unlikely pairing on a double sided dvd from 2002; The Fat Spy on one side, and the Captain on the other! Not only did it have a full size case, and actual bonus features including complete reviews on the case and as a dvd option, scene selection, biographies, and a trivia quiz. The transfer looks to be direct from film, from a well preserved copy! The wonderful technicolor is all there, and shows only minor fading. Detail while not up to today's digital age, is as good as it gets. The soundtrack was clear and understandable! All this goes for The Fat Spy too! Again it looks like a direct from film transfer from a well preserved copy! Apparently the makers of this dvd cared. This is believable, because if you are lucky enough to find one of these, it turns out that this is not a made in China dvd, and instead was made in Canada by an outfit that apparently cared about producing a watchable result!

        1 out of 5 stars Because I can't give it "0" stars.......2005-05-21
