Description
EDDIE PRESLEY is a down-on-his-luck ex-Elvis impersonator. With his days of former glory performing in small to medium-sized clubs behind him, he's stuck in a dead-end security job, making barely enough to live out of his van. But Eddie's luck is about to change when he's offered a comeback gig at a seedy Hollywood nightclub…until he has a breakdown on stage and gives the audience a powerful, improvised performance they'll not soon forget.

Based on the stage play by star Duane Whitaker (FROM DUSK `TIL DAWN 2), EDDIE PRESLEY is a bittersweet drama in the tradition of THE KING OF COMEDY and ED WOOD, with plenty of satirical jabs at politics and life at the bottom of the entertainment food chain. Featuring an all-star lineup of genre favorites, Tempe DVD is proud to bring this cult classic from director Jeff Burr (STRAIGHT INTO DARKNESS, LEATHERFACE) to home video for the first time ever, complete with commentary from the filmmakers!

Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book, and those who felt that the innovative use of "performance capture"--to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters--was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story's epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it's a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal "star" who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it's the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wonders on display, it's clear that The Polar Express represents a significant milestone in the digital revolution of cinema. If it also fills you with the joy of Christmas (in spite of its Nuremberg-like rally of frantic elves), so much the better. --Jeff Shannon

      DVD features
The most intriguing feature on the two-disc DVD is probably the six-minute sequence featuring a new song performed by the two engine-room characters, Smokey and Steamer. The animation is crude and the song is nothing special, but it does preserve the dual performances of Michael Jeter (he played both characters), who passed away during filming. One of the striking aspects of The Polar Express is its use of motion-capture technology to turn real actors into animated characters, and that is examined in a significant portion of the five-part 11-minute featurette, in the "look at" Tom Hanks's multiple performances, and in an Easter egg that offers a side-by-side comparison of the actors in their motion-capture suits with the finished film in the "Hot Chocolate" number. There's also a live performance of Josh Groban singing "Believe" followed by an interview segment with him and composer Alan Silvestri, author Chris Van Allsburg providing a five-minute capsulization of his career, a PC game demo, and a kids' set-top game. The version of the film on DVD is the standard theatrical version, not the 3-D version seen in IMAX theaters. --David Horiuchi

      5 out of 5 stars A magical movie.......2007-06-26

If there's such a thing as magic this movie is it. Lots of cool racing scenes and good interaction with adults and the kids in this movie. Though I don't believe in Santa I do recommend seeing this movie. Your children will love it, mine did!

      5 out of 5 stars A New Christmas Tradition.......2007-06-20

My children loved this book. My favorite moments during the holidays revolve around having my grandchildren--sitting on my lap and surrounding me--watch this DVD with me. I turn up the sound so that the appearance of the train at the beginning of the film rattles the plates in the cabinet in the kitchen. This film is one of my favorite films. And it's one my grandchildren love too, both at Christmas and sometimes early to late in July when the little ones begin to think about the hope for snow and presents.

5 out of 5 stars it must be christmas.......2007-06-08

wonderful dvd and a great classic to have on hand for the young and young at heart

5 out of 5 stars Best of all times!.......2007-05-14

This is one of my all time favorit movies. Great for kids of all ages(1 to 99years old). Purchased this one for a birthday gift for a 3 year old. His mother says that he watched it so much that they put it up so he will enjoy it again for Christmas. A wonderfull movie that will make everyone believe!

      5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2007-05-13

We already purchased the DVD when it was first released. Now that I have an HD DVD, I was surprised to learn that The Polar Express was also available in that format. Therefore this was the very first HD DVD that I ever bought. I'll comment on both the HD version and the regular version.

I played the DVD over last Thanksgiving when my parents came to visit. I grew up in the 50's and 60's. My dad said that it really put you into the Christmas spirit. This movie will go down as a Christmas classic. How many times have my family watched this since it was first released? Don't ask. I lost count.

      Description

The Mississippi River's never seen as many wild twists as in this spirited and extravagant riverboat ride, which stars the King of Rock'n'Roll Elvis Presley and the lovely Donna Douglas of "The Beverly Hillbillies!" Featuring hilarious support from Harry Morgan ("M.A.S.H.") and eleven original Presley tunes as well as his motion-picture dancing debut, Frankie and Johnny is a "sure-fire romppretty girls, a toe-tapping score and Elvis all the way" (Variety)! Presley is Johnny, a riverboat singer whose life, according to girlfriend and singing partner Frankie (Douglas),has become "one great big roulette wheel." And he's so obsessed with that wheel of misfortune that when a gypsy woman prescribes a redhead to be his good luck charm, Johnny sets out to find one. Trouble is, Frankie is most definitely a blonde...and a jealous blonde at that. When she sees Johnny with curvaceous carrot-top Nellie Bly (Nancy Kovack of The Silencers), Frankie decides that she'll break off her romance with Johnnyand end their big numberwith a bang!

3 out of 5 stars Frankie and Johnny.......2007-01-12

I remember this movie when I was younger. If you like Elvis I guess you will ove this movie. Some of the songs I really enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Not only mindless,.......2005-03-15

but stupid and mindless. Presley was never an actor, and proves it once again here. But the songs are even worse than his acting. There are no good ones. None. Not even the title song, whioch was never a major hit for him. The rest of the cast is the usual melange of unknowns or semi-knowns who either totally non-act, or overact with the extremely limited talent they have. Only Harry Morgan, who was likely the only really talented one in the bunch (OK, Strauss to a degree, too) seemed to be having a good time; it's almost as if he went into the movie with a "Hell, it's a paycheck" attitude. The ending goes beyond trite into fantasy. And what can you say about Donna Douglas? Well, she was slightly better here than as Ellie May Clampett. But that's like saying one shade of battleship gray is a bit less dull than the other. The humor in the Beverly Hillbillies rarely, if ever, developed from her. Catch this on TV if you have a few minutes to kill.

4 out of 5 stars He Was Her Man.......2003-02-01

A simple movie that can be enjoyed by all ages. (Which is rare today) The songs and great looks of Elvis make this one enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Change of pace in time for Elvis!.......2002-11-12

"Frankie and Johnny" is based on the old song about two lovers where Johnny is on a losing streak and decides he can change his luck with Nellie Bly. A jealous Frankie shoots her man because "he was doin' her wrong". This movie is sort of based on the song. Everything is true except the shooting part in the end, but it comes very close to actually happening. "Frankie and Johnny" is quite enjoyable no matter how "obscure" you people might find it. It's a real top-notch and every Elvis fan must see it. By the way, we need more reviews on Elvis' movies and music please.

3 out of 5 stars Frankie and Johnny.......2002-08-04

Elvis appeared in this lighthearted musical based on the folk song, "Frankie and Johnny". In the original song, the title characters are lovers whose romance goes awry when red-headed Nellie Bly steals Johnny away from Frankie. Frankie gets revenge by shooting Johnny dead. The movie lightens the tone of the tale by adding a few details and changing the downbeat ending. In the film, the song has been especially written for riverboat performers Frankie and Johnny, played by Donna Douglas (The Beverly Hillbillies) and Elvis Presley. Johnny is a gambler whose bad luck changes when dancer Nellie Bly, played by Nancy Kovak, joins the troupe aboard the riverboat. Each night, the three perform the number "Frankie and Johnny" onstage. As Johnny's interest in Nellie increases, so does Frankie's jealousy. One night, someone loads real bullets into Frankie's prop gun, and Johnny is shot during the performance. As luck would have it, Johnny is saved by a charm that he wears around his neck.

The film did benefit from the juicy secondary roles played by a seasoned cast of character actors which keep the film from being any less interesting. Harry Morgan, who later gained recognition on the TV series M*A*S*H played Cully the piano player. Robert Strauss, the burly villain in many crime dramas, played Blackie, the boss's stooge and Sue Ane Langdon portrayed Mitzi, the girl who is always edged out in the romance department.

Produced for United Artists by Edward Small. Released March 31, 1966. Color.

This film about a down-on-his-luck Elvis impersonator trying to make a comeback performance at a seedy Hollywood Night club is filled with characters who are clearly on the outter fridges of the Hollywood entertainment community but whose persistance is both amusing and heartwarming.

If you like films about show business and especially showbusiness in Hollywood then I would suggest a look at this film.

It's pretty tough to beat Jailhouse Rock in terms of sheer entertainment, but Elvis lovers are particularly fond of this 1964 hit. The Big E plays race-car driver Lucky Jackson, who arrives in Las Vegas for an upcoming Grand Prix race. Lucky's car needs a new engine, so he gets a waiter job at a casino and starts working his crooning charms on Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). It's their on-screen chemistry that makes this flick a lot of fun; Presley never had a better costar than Ann-Margret, and their race-car romance is quintessential 1960s fluff. Then there are the songs, of course, including the snappy title tune, a rockin' rendition of Ray Charles's "What'd I Say?," and "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Viva Las Vegas is one of the Elvis movies that stands the test of time, when the legend was still at his peak. And if you're wondering if the King gets his car fixed in time to win the race, well, check out this digital video disc to find out. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars EP in the AM.......2007-01-10

Elvis, well is Elvis. He's a lot better actor than he's credited for. You can see the admiration of AM's eyes for EP. Pool musical duo is the highlight of the movie. Entertaining movie, even for today.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis' best film ever...........2006-12-23

Of all the Elvis B-pictures that he made during the 1960's, this was by far his best result.
Just looking at old Las Vegas before the corporations took it over, is a visual treat. Ann Margaret is very complimentary to Elvis as his wannabe love interest. The songs in his films were often poor quality, but not so much in this film.

If you are a new Elvis fan and want to see a high quality Technicolor transfer of a great classic romp....this is my pick for his best movie. The only other one that came close to this was "Fun In Alcupulco" (sp?)
      Enjoy...and Viva Las Vegas!!

      4 out of 5 stars Presley with Ann-Margret, a dynamite combo!.......2006-06-11

VIVA LAS VEGAS is the quintessential Elvis Presley musical, filled with great songs and not to mention his most formidable female costar, Ann-Margret at the very height of her 'sex kitten' phase.

Just like many of his other movie roles, Presley plays race-car driver Lucky Jackson, who gets stranded in Vegas when his money runs out. He meets beautiful swimming instructor Rusty (Ann-Margret) and the sparks immediately start flying. The director George Sidney had already guided Ann-Margret through her first major starring vehicle "Bye Bye Birdie", and had also helmed many of the great M-G-M musicals. He brought a great touch to VIVA LAS VEGAS which is one of the main reasons why so many people love this movie, even those who aren't too keen on Elvis. The musical numbers (choreographed by veteran Broadway and Hollywood dancer David Winters) are plentiful but the highlights include "Yellow Rose of Texas", "The Lady Loves Me", "Today, Tomorrow and Forever" and the Title Song. Ann-Margret also gets to sizzle with the elaborately-designed and jazzily-choreographed "Appreciation". Also featuring Cesare Danova, William Demarest and Nicky Blair.

      5 out of 5 stars Bittersweet story of a down-on-his-luck Elvis impersonator.......2004-11-27
