Unruly but comically enterprising, Henry Jaglom's comedy Sitting Ducks is spirited, smart nonsense about a crime syndicate's bookkeeper, Simon (Michael Emil), who runs off with a pile of mob money. An essential Jaglom character, Simon is a born naif with no shortage of skewed observations about the world, crime, sex, and survival. Exhilarated, he takes off with cohort Sidney (Zack Norman) on an escape plan leading, eventually, to Latin America. Inevitably these losers complicate their lives by hooking up with a pair of sexy-neurotic exiles (Patrice Townsend, Irene Forest) who bring added dimension to thejourney. The result is a funny, twitchy, but expansive milestone in the early independent film movement, and timely proof in 1980 that the then-controversial Jaglom really was a talent worth watching. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Soundtrack is in Spanish as well as in English.......2007-04-16

This show is great, and I just wanted to mention that Spanish is one of the options for soundtrack, since it is not mentioned in the technical characteristics on this site.

5 out of 5 stars A former bright spot on cable TV comes home.......2004-04-23

In a satellite/cable TV universe where originality is a sure-fire formula for obscurity, "Sitting Ducks" was one of the brightest spots on the Cartoon Network schedule. Now banished indefinitely, it comes home in a double-sided DVD that delivers over 5 hours of animated hilarity.

"Sitting Ducks" strikes just the right balance between cuteness for the children and sophistication for grown-ups. The friendship between Bill, an amiable self-assured duck who lives in Ducktown and Aldo, a towering 'gator from neighboring Swampwood is at the heart of the series. And what heart!

Bill and Aldo's friendship begins in an unlikely manner (without divulging too much, one was hoping to eat the other) but grows into a partnership that offers no end of comic possibilities. Aldo, we find out over time, is not just another mindless green duck-eating machine but often displays wisdom, ingenuity and even morality.

The series' setting of Ducktown is populated with an assortment of other feathered folks who are as quirky as Bill and Aldo's friendship, including Dr. Cecil, a general practitioner and aspiring dentist in a burg where not a single citizen has a tooth! To him, Aldo is a godsend, a king-size chance to ply his long unused dental craft.

The cuteness of the series is pierced from time to time by the dangers of alligators and ducks living at each other's doorsteps. Though a truce exists between Swampwood and Ducktown, 'gators regularly plot to make a meal out of Ducktown's citizens. In an episode poking fun at reality TV, a duck cameraman is eaten (off-camera) by alligators. In another, Aldo is trying to curb his appetite for duck by wearing duck hormone patches prescribed by Dr. Cecil. The patches give him a hankering for duck fare. When he chomps a fly right out of the air, the insect's dying cry reverberates all the way to the next spoken line. There are also a few instances of potty humor but that's probably what sold the show to Cartoon Network.

The DVD begins with previews for movies and other home video programs from Universal but if you put your player (set top or software) into fast-forward, the disc resumes normal playback speed at the end of the previews without any intervention. The previews are only on side 1.

"Sitting Ducks" may have gone dark on cable and satellite TV but it shines brighter than ever on DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars Worthy of 5 stars!.......2004-02-28

I didn't think much of the series when in first came out,but slowly and surely,I started to like it. And became a fan of the show ever since. Sitting Ducks is awesome!

The DVD is packed with tons of episodes,a lot from Season 2 (2003) put in,and some of Season 1's (2001). My only tiny complain was it didn't include some other episodes from Season 1,but this DVD is excellent! A worthy buy for sure!

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD, but...........2004-02-14

This is a really odd, but neat little piece of animation. I've managed to catch it once or twice on TV, and liked it enough that I decided to get the DVD to watch all the episodes.

Seeing as how I just opened my copy, I can't really say too much about the program itself, although it looks and sounds pretty good.

My complaint is the opening. There are a number of previews (ads) before the main program. You either have to fast forward through them or watch them, before you get to the main menu. Each and every time you put the disc in and play it. You can't just hit the chapter skip button and go through them. What gives? That's the only reason this disc doesn't get 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the kids........2004-02-13

We loved to watch this show when it was on TV. But that was the problem, off then on and now off again. So, when the DVD became available there was no hesitation. The humorous stories, great graphics and wonderful characters have won over our grandchildren and ourselves. This DVD is well worth the purchase and it provides over 5 hours of enjoyment. Can't wait for more of the same.

5 out of 5 stars The best "scam" movie ever!.......2003-04-20

One slick-tongued oily hustler (Zack Norman) plus one twitchy, neurotic accountant (Michael Emil) hook up to pull an ultimate scam: stealing from the thieves. Of COURSE it becomes an out-of-control run for the border, with a mix of wonderfully goofy characters, all of whom have their OWN scams working. Jaglom gets magnificent performances out of his cast, so much so that at times it feels more like a documentary than a "movie". There's not a moment in this film I don't enjoy, and it made me aware of Jaglom in a way I've never been aware of a director before. Alas, none of his other films seem to live up to this one in my mind, and Zack Norman's cool-but-slimy persona gets unbelievably tiresome in his other Jaglom films. This is a great one, though, for everyone involved. I have watched it over and over and enjoy it every time.
