Audrey Hepburn plays a Parisienne whose husband is murdered and who finds she is being followed by four men seeking the fortune her late spouse had hidden away. Cary Grant is the stranger who comes to her aid, but his real motives aren't entirely clear--could he even be the killer? The 1963 film is directed by Stanley Donen, but it has been called "Hitchcockian" for good reason: the possible duplicities between lovers, the unspoken agendas between a man and woman sharing secrets. Charade is nowhere as significant as a Hitchcock film, but suspense-wise it holds its own; and Donen's glossy production lends itself to the welcome experience of stargazing. One wants Cary Grant to be Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn to be no one but Audrey Hepburn in a Hollywood product such as this, and they certainly don't let us down. --Tom Keogh

A GREAT CLASSIC .......2007-06-27
Charade is a great classic for any age group. Picture quality was excellent. Whenever you have Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, George Kelly, James Coburn and Walter Matthau in the same movie how can you go wrong. I rate this movie 10 stars.
Charade.......2007-06-27
This Hitchcock homage provides a last glimpse of Cary as leading man. At sixty, the actor still brings off his trademark persona superbly. Hepburn is also in top form as the put-upon damsel in distress. Deftly combining mystery, romance, and humor, director Donen creates a chic, sophisticated mood via gorgeous Paris locations and a smooth Mancini score. The villains are mean enough to be taken seriously, but exhibit enough idiosyncrasies to seem human (Coburn has particular fun as Tex). As top-drawer entertainment, "Charade" is the real thing.
Excellent all-time favorite! Incomplete transfer though. Read on........2007-05-29
I didn't want to write a complete review of the movie. No need, as so many have echoed my sentiments in previous reviews that this is a first rate movie, with first rate comedic/romantic actors. Hepburn, Grant, Matthau, Kennedy, and Coburn are superb. The dialogue is fun and campy. The plot twists are classic, and the great 60's feel, helped mightily by the amazing Henry Mancini score and Parisien setting are unforgettable and unmatched since. I must point out to buyers, and I likely am repeating other collectors' comments (I didn't read down far enough), that the hi-def digital transfer is incomplete in some places. The first instance I notice this is during 'Bartholomew's' (Matthau's) first meeting with Mrs. Lampert (Hepburn) at the embassy (20:20-30), when he is cleaning a stain from his tie. The image goes inexplicably from clear and warmly lit, to grainy and out of contrast, then back again in the next scene. A very short interval, but strange for a Criterion disc. The other instance of note is right at the end when the last few seconds of the final scene morph with the visuals and credits, not serious, but still odd. There were likely some other spots. I didn't go back and micro-analyze the DVD frame by frame. But, for the serious Criterion fan, it is worth noting. I apologize if such has already been pointed out. It still does not change the fact that this is one of the best comedy/mystery/whodunnits of all time. Enjoy!

I'm a Cary Grant fan so I natuarally think this is an enjoyable movie.
Cary Grant/Audrey Hepburn Spectacular!.......2007-05-06

What a Charade.......2006-10-21
Cary Grant. Audrey Hepburn. A hidden megafortune. Three nasty pursuers. A slick, chic thriller with a Hitchcockian edge.
With that kind of formula, it's not surprising that "Charade" deserves every shred of praise it receives -- and over the years, this classic has received a lot. Director Stanlet Donen had his finest moment when he created this funny, witty, tightly-plotted little thriller, where you're left with questions right up to the final scene.
While on vacation at a ski lodge, Regina Lampert (Hepburn) decides to get a divorce. But when she returns home, she finds that her husband has been tossed off a train -- and even stranger, she finds that he was mixed up in a gold robbery many years ago. To get her mind off her problems, Reggie goes out on the town with Peter Joshua (Grant), a guy she met at the resort.
But during her outing, she's cornered by three strange, creepy men -- and the worst part is, she finds that Joshua may be in on their plot. Unsure whom to trust, Reggie starts digging to find out where the gold is -- and then her pursuers are murdered one by one. Will she be the next target?
It's a sharp, taut little thriller, reminiscent of the more commercial thrillers by Hitchcock, though set in a chic 1960s Paris setting, and with a New Wave edge. Stanlet Donen did mostly comedies in his career, which makes the tight plot and wry wit of this movie stand out even more.
The movie moving along at a fairly steady pace, with one or two dead spots, but mostly just following the twisted plot threads. There are some really harrowing moments, like Regina being attacked by the Hook-man. By the tense finale, a lot of the odd little clues suddenly fall into place, especially the murder of the three thugs. It's a brilliant piece of scripting, even if the storyline is a bit unreal.
Fortunately it's not all spy-thrills and revenge. Donen could change from action to horror to comedy in a moment, and he keeps the quieter moments lively with funny dialogue and some sophisticated slapstick, like Grant showering fully-clad. The witty dialogue is full of glorious one-liners. "You won't be able to lie on your back for awhile," Reggie quips, "but then you can lie from any position."
Though Grant wasn't wholly comfortable playing opposite Hepburn, the two actors have kinetic chemistry. Whether they're goofing off, or chasing a kiss in a nightclub, they feel entirely real and romantic. Better yet, nobody knows who Grant really is or what he's doing, so there's an added element of danger to their relationship.
Unfortunately the Delta print of this isn't worth the savings, since it was taken from a spotty, scratchy older print, with odd visual and sound jumps. It's disconcerting, to say the least. Better check out the double-bill of "Charade" and its remake "Truth about Charlie," since that print has been lovingly restored.
This tightly-plotted, fast-moving thriller deserves to be as well-loved as it is, and cinephiles should be ashamed of themselves if they haven't yet seen it. A must-have.
Classic Mystery.......2006-08-28
This movie begins to misdirect you from the very beginning. There are a number of plot devices that an avid mystery fan will recognize, but their use in this film provides only a minor distraction from the fun.
Reggie Lampert, very convincingly played by the always beautiful Audrey Hepburn, is informed her husband has died at the beginning of the movie. Reggie quickly becomes the target of a group of nefarious individuals played by James Coburn, George Kennedy and Ned Glass. While the role of these three is clear, what is less clear are the roles of Mr. Bartholomew (Walter Matthau) and Peter Joshua (Cary Grant). Both the latter appear to want to help Reggie, but in very different ways.
Adding to Reggie's initial confusion is why everyone is after her. As the movie slowly reveals, her husband was not all that he appeared. Her husband conspired with a group of others to steal a money during World War II. However, Reggie's husband apparently decided he wanted all the money for himself and took it without the other's consent. Naturally the other partners were a bit upset and took out their frustrations on Reggie's husband.
The question everyone asks of Reggie is where the money is located. Unfortunately, Reggie's husband neglected to advise her where he hid the stolen loot. Reggie must find the money to save her life.
This movie intentionally misleads the viewer from the beginning. Cary Grant consorts with the characters we know are criminals, though we think he has to be a good guy. Walter Matthau is much less helpful than he should be given that he has an office in the U.S. Embassy. There are even brief moments at the beginning of the movie where I wondered whether Reggie might know more than she revealed.
Paying attention to the movie, you may find that you guess the location of the cash before Reggie and Peter. The plot is prepared for your guess, and Reggie and Peter lose the loot just when they discover where it is hidden. You may guess the other secrets of the movie as well, but the fun is trying to guess before everything is revealed in the final minutes.
This movie combines moments of humor and fear in a style that borrows much from Alfred Hitchcock's movies. The plot and cinematography do not quite achieve that lofty peak, but rise high enough and move along quickly enough that this film is thoroughly enjoyable. I recommend this movie for the collection of any Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn fan, and for those who liked movies such as "To Catch a Thief."
"You fell for her like an egg from a tall chicken".......2006-03-06
Beginning credits play a Henry Mancini's score and we are swept back to the sixties.
The opening scene is of a metro train rolling down the track in Europe. A body is tossed off. Then a flash to a ski resort where a hand with a Luger-Parabelum is being lowered and aimed directly between Reggie's (Audrey Hepburn) eyes.
Turns out that the body from the train was that of Reggie's husband, Charles Lambert. At the funeral a strange selection of sinister characters one by one check to be sure Charles is really deceased.
Looks like Charles left with something of theirs and they want it back. Everyone except Reggie knows that she has it. In the process of retrieval Carry Grant appears to be helping her; however his name and occupation seems to change periodically, hence the title "Charade."
Many people will be dispatched in unique and creative ways. What is everyone after and will Reggie find it before it is too late for her?
The criterion edition has a voiceover track of director Stanley Donen and screenwriter Peter Stone discussing the film. Most of it sounds like rattling. However once in a while there is a useful piece of information. Such as the gloved hand with the Luger in the beginning scene was a man's hand so you would not suspect the next scene.
Great Movie...Low quality DVD.......2003-07-28
As what you might call an "old movie fanatic" I have rewatched Charade again and again. It is a fun family movie complete with great cast, witty remarkes and a fun story. Although the quality of the dvd is not the best, I would definitally recomend this movie to all. Audrey Hepburn (my personal favorite) as well as Cari Grant are great together and fun to watch in this Hitchcock style murder mystery. Plus, if you are a fan of Stanely Donelson (the director)movies, this is another great one. Hope you enjoy one of my all time favorite movies!

--Tom Keogh
Description
A young American in Paris (Audrey Hepburn) flees a trio of crooks, who are trying to recover the fortune her late husband stole from them. The only person she can trust is a suave stranger (Cary Grant). A deliciously dark comedic thriller, Stanley Donen's Charade dazzles with style and macabre wit to spare. Criterion is proud to present this '60s suspense classic in a gorgeous widescreen transfer.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
What a Charade.......2006-12-15
Unfortunately the print here is... well, rather bad, obviously taken from elderly prints. For those who can't afford the best -- meaning the ultra-expensive Criterion -- better check out the double-bill of "Charade" and its remake "Truth about Charlie," since that print has been lovingly restored.
This tightly-plotted, fast-moving thriller deserves to be as well-loved as it is, and cinephiles should be ashamed of themselves if they haven't yet seen it. A must-have.

I'm a Cary Grant fan so I natuarally think this is an enjoyable movie.
Cary Grant/Audrey Hepburn Spectacular!.......2007-05-06
Audery Hepburn stars as a neurotic but lovable woman caught up in murder, mystery and intrigue following her husband's untimely death. Enter the straight laced Cary Grant and hilarity ensues!
This is a must have for fans of classic movies, comedies, mysteries, or anyone just looking for a few hours of good clean fun!

Great Movie But This Is Just A Generic DVD!.......2005-10-08
Charade is one of my favorite movies and Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn gave excellent performancaes as did Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy and the Paris location scenes are very good but unfortunately these lower price DVD's have a tendency to have bad picture quality and if you are looking for the best picture possible you will probably want to either buy the pricey Criterion DVD or the Truth About Charlie DVD that includes Charade on the flip side of the DVD as a bonus feature. Both DVD's have beautiful anamorphic widscreen versions of Charade with very good picture quality. I myself can't afford Criterion DVDs which the last time I checked their Charade DVD cost 34 dollars So I bought the cheaper priced Truth About Charlie DVD and I now have a beautiful pristine widescreen transfer of Charade.
