For Reno 911 fans who believe that Comedy Central's improv-driven mock-reality series could benefit from more unbleeped profanity, uncensored sex scenes, and nudity, the feature-length R-rated Miami will be just the ticket. Perhaps less a movie than it is a Very Special Episode, Miami transplants short-shorts-bedecked Lt. Dangle (Thomas Lennon) and company to Miami for the American Police Convention ("They invited everybody"). No sooner can you say "bio-terrorism" than the hotel is quarantined, and Wahoe County's hapless misfits, shut out when their credentials can't be found, must step in and save the city from "complete chaos." Complete chaos ensues. As with the series, Miami unfolds in a series of hit and miss bits. The funniest are those that hew closest to the Cops template, such as an early "814" call that does not, as the officers believe, decode as armed intruder, but actually involves a loose chicken, and an encounter with a taunting good ol' boy who, when faced with an alligator in a swimming pool, boldly goes where officers Jones (Cedric Yarbrough) and Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui) fear to tread.

Happily, as was not the case with Borat, no innocent or unsuspecting citizens were emotionally harmed during the making of this movie. All of the jokes and humiliations are at the Reno squad's expense. Miami benefits from some subtle (and not so subtle) stunt casting, including Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens) in a small but pivotal role as the deputy assistant mayor, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's hilarious, albeit short-lived cameo as a gung-ho bomb squad leader. It is a tribute to the crack ensemble that Reno's intimately etched characters do not need much of an introduction, and can be appreciated by those who have not seen the show. But longtime viewers are issued this warning that Miami crosses with even more impunity the thin blue line of good taste. A Rear Window homage in which we view each officer indulging in some alone time in their fleabag motel rooms may not be as bad as Borat's wrestling match, but really, there ought to be a law! --Donald Liebenson

Description

The story centers on a rag-tag team of Reno cops that are called in to save the day after a terrorist attack disrupts a national police convention in Miami Beach during spring break. They're not the best, but that's all we got. Based on the successful Comedy Central TV series.

4 out of 5 stars good movie.......2007-07-05

If your like me, and love the Reno 911 TV show, then this dvd is a must own. I found it to be very funny at times.

4 out of 5 stars Sets the benchmark for Police Parody..........2007-07-03

With earlier reviews that have been posted, it's just not necessary for me to delve into specifics about the why I enjoyed this movie. If you enjoy dry, dark, and crude humour, this movie is for you.

Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy Genius - Good Production.......2007-07-02

Whoever gives this movie less than a full 5 stars is a comedic idiot. Do you know how rare it is for a TV show of this variety to succeed at all in adapting their material to the big screen? Let alone do it with the cohesiveness and consistency that this movie pulls off? It is done in mini comedy vignettes, just like the TV show, and manages to stay hilarious for 99% of the movie. And I'm tough. This blows away any comedy in recent memory and even beats the readily compared super troopers by a long shot. A real long shot. In short, as long as you don't have a limited social filter when rating your enjoyment of movies, you really can't lose with this comedy.

5 out of 5 stars greatest movie of all time.......2007-07-02

this movie is hilllarious, its not exactly like the show, but has some of the same elements, but they made it feel a little more like a movie on parts, the features on the unrated dvd are great, and its in widescreen and the theatrical is in fullscreen only, i was highly impressed with that

5 out of 5 stars Rated F - For Funny!.......2007-07-02

In "Reno 911!: Miami," Lieutenant Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) takes "the stupidest group of people I've ever worked with who are not legally retarded" (his quote) to a national police convention in Miami Beach during spring break. Unfortunately, they discover that they are not on the list of invited police groups. After a night of heavy drinking and sexual debauchery in a fleabag motel, they return to the convention, and learn that the other police groups are quarantined in their fancy hotel. The Reno Sheriff's Department have greatness thrust upon them, becoming the thin blue line that separates Miami from chaos.

Apart from several police cars crashing into each other as they leave the station house, things proceed smoothly. In fact, things proceed much like they do on the hilarious TV series "Reno 911!," but with the different escapades that take place in Miami. Deputy James Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui) and Deputy S. Jones (Cedric Yarbrough) run away after a local citizen is being eaten alive by an alligator in a pool. Deputy Travis Junior (Robert Ben Garant) ends up in the guts of a dead whale the gang is trying to roll back into the ocean. Every cast member gets to show their character's personalities and quirks to great effect in this feature film. After they save the day in their own unique way, Lieutenant Dangle and company return to serve and protect the city they love. As Deputy Travis Junior said, "Reno is a lot like Mayberry on the TV, except that everyone's on crystal meth, and prostitution's legal."

A delightful undersea world unfolds in Pixar's animated adventure Finding Nemo. When his son Nemo is captured by a scuba-diver, a nervous-nellie clownfish named Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) sets off into the vast--and astonishingly detailed--ocean to find him. Along the way he hooks up with a scatterbrained blue tang fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), who's both helpful and a hindrance, sometimes at the same time. Faced with sharks, deep-sea anglers, fields of poisonous jellyfish, sea turtles, pelicans, and much more, Marlin rises above his neuroses in this wonderfully funny and nonstop thrill ride--rarely does more than 10 minutes pass without a sequence destined to become a theme park attraction. Pixar continues its run of impeccable artistic and economic success (their movies include Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Monsters, Inc). Also featuring the voices of Willem Dafoe, Geoffrey Rush, and Allison Janney. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BE CORRUPTED BY THIS MOVIE!!!.......2007-06-05

The movie was a little boring and looked really fake. You could tell it wasn't real and was just a bunch of silly puppets. I hope the kids that watch it don't really think fish can talk. Most of the movie is scientifically inaccurate. At one point there are a lot of "baby" fish. These fish appear, no, not as fry or something else that makes sense, but as slightly smaller versions of the adult. After this, these "baby" fish climb onto the back of a stingray (a predatory animal that should be eating them" who is their "teacher" he swims around and sings songs while the "baby" fish ride on his back. Other associations appear in this movie that I doubt have ever been observed in the wild. At one point, a clown fish is talking to a seahorse and an octopus, two of which only associate with their own kind, and one of which will kill anything to get within several feet of it! Does this happen in the movie? NO!

However, what I find most disturbing is not the numerous scientific inaccuracies, but the fact that most people that view this movie regard it as a documentary on ocean life. I have seen kids at the aquarium pointing at fish and referring to them as a "Nemo" or a "Dori".

Anyway, the stingray teacher manages to lose the baby clown fish (big surprise, what do you expect with a stingray for a teacher, you're lucky he didn't eat the kid!). And the clown fish gets captured and put into an aquarium in a dentists office with, yes more talking fish, but just wait! In this tank, there are also talking shrimp, and even a talking Starfish.

OK, now talking fish is one thing. They may not have lungs or vocal chords to produce speech, and not even close to sufficient cognitive function, but at least they're vertebrates! But having an animal without even a brain talking!? That's just ridiculous! And speaking the same language as the fish!

Now, yes, there have been strange things in Disney movies before. In Alice in wonderland there are talking flowers, and even a talking slug that smokes opium. However, Alice in Wonderland is the delusion of a madman, and does not take place in the natural world. Hence the name "Wonderland". However, does Finding Nemo take place in "Wonderland"? NO! It takes place in the Great Barrier reed, just outside Australia! Did the maker think "Well, nobody that watches this movie has been to Australia, so they won't know that the fish don't talk there"? I don't know what he was thinking, but I wasn't fooled! I personally have been to Australia, and the fish do NOT talk there! this movie makes no sense and is in no way entertaining.

After that, the fish attempt to make their tank dirty by clogging the filter, in which they succeed. However, the maker of this film has obviously never kept saltwater fish before. If he had, he would realise that after living without a filter for more than an hour, every fish in the tank would be dead. Does this happen? NO! The tank just gets really dirty and the fish remain just as alive as ever! I couldn't take it any more. I walked out of the theater after that.

Do not regard this movie as factual! Do not take your children to see this movie! This is one of the WORST places to get information about fish. Do not be fooled by this movie or the numerous other positive reviews!

5 out of 5 stars For the kids, mainly.......2007-06-05

Adults usually write the reviews here so from an adult perspective, this film is not as rich as Monsters nor the Toy Story films. Those had many in jokes and adult themed gags. I would say that Nemo is entertaining enough to see once, maybe twice, but adults will tire of it soon.
Kids are another matter. It is cute, colorful, and entertaining. My only caution is that my son didn't like the lost mom and separation from dad plots. Most of us grew up on Disney films which always had lost parents though. I don't expect it to cause any major trauma, but more sensitive kids will be sad during those parts. The humor is gentle and okay for tots.

5 out of 5 stars Lighten Up!.......2007-06-04

As far as this sounds, I read the bad reviews. "Finding Nemo" IS NOT as bad as the others who watched it say it is. Let me show some advice. So, Dory has "short-termed-memory-loss," so, Nemo has the "lucky fin," so, Marlin is an over-protective, cowardly clownfish, SO, WHAT?! Everybody likes this movie just the way it is. Try to find this movie in a good way. I did.

3 out of 5 stars Nemo's good, Monsters is better.......2007-06-01

Finding Nemo is a cute movie for sure. Ellen Degeneress lends her voice and makes is a funny movie. Nemo is vivid with beautiful colors, and again, is cute, but lacks some of the creativity of Toy Story, and Monsters, Inc. The story does have an underlying deep meaning which I can totally appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Nemo.......2007-05-29

This movie will work well with my Spanish students. It is a story they may know and one they will enjoy. It provides a good listening to the target language experience for them. Product was in great shape.

The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming, deep and very, very funny. Forrest Gump is the Ultimate Movie........2007-07-04

The sweetest of love stories, philosophically profound, deep as the ocean and light as a feather... and very funny. Forrest Gump is the ultimate movie in so many ways, there are so many sides to it. It's predominantly a `serious' film about a dim headed, yet good hearted southern boy and how the absence of a dysfunctional ego and a simple sense of honor and integrity enables him to flow through life effortlessly, like the metaphor of the white feather we see at the beginning and the end of the film.

Forrest Gump is a masterfully written and directed tale that punctuates deep philosophical substance with a good deal of humor -the scene of Forrest and Bubba scrubbing the floor with toothbrushes while Bubba enlightens Forrest on the details of `shrimping' is just too funny for words. There's never been a film like it before or since. It ingeniously weaves the history of a generation into the script, taking scenes from the Vietnam war, JFK, the 60's protest movement and flower power, and onward into the age of AIDS. Actual film clippings from various historical events are cleverly edited to enable Forrest to step into them and interact. Wonderful Stuff... it's kind of a nod to the `Wonder Years'.

As richly entertaining as Forrest's life is, and as very funny as many of the scenes are, it's still the character of Forrest that carries the move. He's impossible not to like. You become significantly invested in his life. You share his heartbreak as Jenny repeated shuns the open heart he offers her. And you admire his quiet acceptance of 'what is'. His lack of self consciousness - devoid of the myriad games and manipulations that most people of `greater intelligence' display -his simple open heartedness and sense of personal integrity which he carries through life are inspirational. This clearly is a story that shows the ultimate triumph of virtue over the complex dysfunctions of the mind. Jenny plays out a sad character... always looking somewhere else for love, although she finds it on her death bed And Lt. Dan is just an awesome character. His 360 degree turn through what life deals him is as inspirational as Forrest's.

The closing scene is the most memorable for me... the feather floats in the random breeze, as Forrest muses about predestination vs random existence: " I think it's both... both happening at the same time." - which leads me to believe our beloved Forrest isn't as dumb as he's portrayed.

5 out of 5 stars Forrest Gump a hero for our times.......2007-06-28

Forrest Gump is a greatlook at the 60s and 70s. Tom Hanks is the most likable actor from his generation. Forrest Gump may seem dumb but he mostly makes sense. Forrest Gump has a good heart and guts, his life is a good full life. Forrest Gump is one of the best characters in movie history. This movie is everything its supposed to be.

3 out of 5 stars Forrest Gump.......2007-06-27

It is one of the greatest movies than I've ever seen BUT it doesn't have spanish subtitles.

1 out of 5 stars a spiritually and intellectually bankrupt enterprise.......2007-06-15

This movie celebrates one of the worst possible perspectives on life and does it by exploiting all of the good will and energy of music of the Woodstock generation. Think about it: Tom Hanks portrays a pure innocent who presumably is to be seen as an American Buddha -- detached from everything except pure love. Meanwhile, Robin Wright Penn is portrayed as an idiot because she invests herself in silly causes such as opposing the Vietnam War. We are manipulated into sympathizing with the figure who remains utterly detached from life instead of the figure who cares about the world around her.

Meanwhile, we are further manipulated by a soundtrack carefully assembled so as to have us associate all the good feelings and hopes connected to the songs with what we are watching: a phenomenal bit of film making that successfully transposes the audiences associations with the highest ideals of the sixties and seventies on a film that belittles commitments to those beliefs.

This is a truly insidious, reactionary piece of work. At the end of the movie, "Nashville," Robert Altman cleverly decries the ease by which an audience can be seduced into acquiescing to feel-good nihilism by having everyone leave the theater singing "You may say that I ain't free, it don't worry me." with gospel abandon. The raves that the movie Forest Gump got proves Altman's point.

No one can deny that this movie is a well made film with some sweet and wonderful performances. But, at its core, it is spiritually bankrupt. While it is not as powerful a film as "Triumph of the Will" and the "philosophy" it attempts to manipulate the audience into buying isn't as remotely evil as that of Leni R's patrons, it is nonetheless of that ilk -- a successful attempt to bypass the audience's frontal lobe.

Ocean's Eleven improves on 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot, and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end," and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originated by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Have you ever watched a film where you wanted the bad guys to win?.......2007-06-01

I have trouble calling this a remake, because it doesn't share much in common with the `rat pack' original except the name of the lead character and that it is a casino heist. Actually, this is a better film than its namesake, apart from the fact that the cast of the original was filled with entertainment legends.

Director Soderbergh takes a vacation from serious filmmaking with this film, which on his resume is something of a lark. Everyone seems to be having a good time and it is clear that the actors enjoyed making this film. The overhauled screenplay pops with snappy dialogue, riddled with deadpan humor and a decent, though somewhat far fetched plot. It has a little of the whimsical feel of `The Sting', though the screenplay isn't as strong. A crew of professional thieves plans to knock over three casinos on a fight night by raiding the impregnable vault that serves all three. The plan is elaborate, full of high tech wizardry, daring deceptions and acrobatic stunts. The caper runs into more than the normal amount of foul ups, but our devious team of burglars is always up to the task of working around the glitches.

The cast is very solid. George Clooney is perfectly cast as the brainchild of the scheme. He is dapper, macho and smooth with a sardonic wit that keeps the film's tone serious yet light. Brad Pitt plays the always eating Rusty, who is really the brains behind the operation, coordinating it flawlessly. Except for `The Mexican', this is much lighter material than Pitt usually tackles, yet he gives a suave performance seeming very comfortable with his character. Despite the fact that this is an ensemble cast, Pitt carries a lot of the weight and makes the story as close to believable as could be possible given its improbable nature.

Don Cheadle continues to impress, rendering a terrific demolitions expert. His cockney accent is great and with this part Cheadle shows once again what a terrific character actor he is. In a little twist of irony, Cheadle plays an analogous part in this film to that played by Sammy Davis, Jr. in the original, and he also played Sammy in the TV movie entitled `The Rat Pack'. Poor Andy Garcia has the thankless task of playing the heavy in a tongue-in-cheek film, but he does a marvelous job. Matt Damon plays the rookie, giving the character a charming naiveté and a mischievous bent. Julie Roberts is nothing more than a throw in, with a minor role as Ocean's ex-wife.

If you don't take this film too seriously, you are in for an entertaining evening. It is smartly done without too much melodrama, and provides just enough suspense and realism to keep it from being a farce.

4 out of 5 stars stealing from a casino....crazy!.......2007-04-30

George Clooney plays Danny Ocean. Danny just got out of prison for a mistake he made 5 years ago. Along with that mistake, he lost his wife. Coming out of prison doesn't deter him from crime. He immediately rounds up 10 men to help him steal from a vault that stores money from 3 casinos. This is a big and dangerous mission. There has been 3 attempts to rob the casinos and none of them have been successful.

In the midst of their planning and training, an tidbit of information comes to light. The owner of these casinos is Terry Benedict (Garcia). That's not the important part. The important part is that Terry's current girlfriend is Tess (Roberts). Tess is Danny's ex-wife. So the question is...is Danny doing this for the money or is he doing this for his ex-wife? Of course, the gang is upset as it puts the mission in jeopardy.

Nonetheless, the mission continues with some adjustments. The question is will Ocean and his gang succeed with the mission?

I have to say that *Ocean's Eleven* is one of the best heist film that I've seen in recent years. I may not have agreed with the selection of actors but I do have to say that the chemistry between them was great.

The always dependable Tom Selleck returns as Robert B. Parker's small town police chief Jesse Stone in Death in Paradise, the made-for-TV sequel to Stone Cold, his 2005 debut as the character. Stone is a grittier, more human (and vulnerable) role than the one that made Selleck famous (playboy detective Thomas Magnum of Magnum, P.I.), but his tenacity and character flaws (a drinking problem and latent feelings for his ex-wife) seem a comfortable fit for the older Selleck. And the mystery itself--which surrounds the death of a young student whose connections to big-city crime--is crisp and convoluted (if not particularly novel), which provides Selleck with enough action and drama to please his longtime fans. William Devane and Gary Basaraba (Boomtown) are among the guest stars, while Viola Davis, Vito Rezza, and Kohl Sudduth return from Stone Cold as Selleck's police officers. Selleck also contributed to the script and co-produced along with director Robert Harmon, who helmed the other Stone films. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

Selleck plays the role of Jesse Stone, a former Los Angeles homicide detective who left California and his ex-wife to become the police chief in a small New England town. Among his many character flaws are his struggles with a drinking problem and lingering feelings for his ex-wife.

Jesse Stone: Night Passage is a prequel to 2005's Stone Cold. Co-starring Stephanie March (TV's "Law & Order: SVU") and Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects), the telefilm depicts Jesse Stone's (Selleck) first days as Paradise, Massachusetts' Chief of Police. He must immediately find the killer of his predecessor, plus investigate a domestic violence situation involving the city's resident hothead (Baldwin), whose ties to a local bank manager expose a money-laundering scheme.

5 out of 5 stars A Thinking Hero at Last!.......2007-07-04

This second Jesse Stone made-for-tv movie again stars Tom Sellect as the flawed but likeable police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts, and an older Selleck proves he owns the role. Anyone who is familiar with Robert B. Parkers novels, Tom Selleck or the first movie will feel like they're visiting an old friend here.

In this movie, the body of a teenage girl is found floating in a local lake. With few clues and a local prime suspect who seems to be a step ahead of him, Stone's investigation eventually leads to Boston where he clashes with a local mob boss who seems to know the answers, but wants Stone to figure it out. Parallel to the murder, Stone also deals with a case of domestic violence that turns turns deadly, his alcoholism and feelings for his ex-wife, and a town council not sure if they picked the right person for the job.

Not to say this movie is for everyone. People who dislike Tom Selleck or the Parker novels obviously won't like it, nor will those video-game-raised folks who need constant chases, CGI augmentation and cardboard characters who don't get in the way of the gratuitous mayhem. Like all the Jesse Stone stories, this one is anchored on and driven by characters - how they interact, fail to interact, and how the weight of their pasts affect them as they try to make their way in the world. And the movie has the courage just to watch people thinking -- a rarity in any entertainment these days.

As of this writing, Parker has written six Jesse Stone novels, and Selleck has made four of them into movies. I heartily recommend you track down each one, buy it, and watch it over and over again. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Movie.......2007-06-28

Tom Selleck was born to play Jesse Stone. So much so that I can't imagine the character without Selleck. I immediately loved "Stone Cold" when I saw it premiere on TV and I have enjoyed watching Jesse solve crimes ever since.

Death In Paradise is a great little movie with an engaging storyline, believable dialogue (like always), solid production work, and a fantastic cast. I love the theme music for the series and the way that with just a couple simple piano themes so much mood can be conveyed. I've seen all 4 of the Jesse Stone movies and I love them all. I eagerly look forward to more!

I should note that I usually don't watch made for TV movies, I'm kind of a big cinema buff, but I saw "Stone Cold" and I was hooked. It is refreshing when CGI and all manner of film trikery isn't employed and the filmmakers must rely on good old fashioned storytelling. The acting and the writing in this series is tremendous and needs no trickery to succeed.

1 out of 5 stars what a cliched bore!.......2007-06-18

exactly like the novel itself, this movie actually sucked big time. what we got here was a forever look tired jesse stone played by tom selleck, he walked the beat, chewing gum, pondering, walking around, talking around, drinking, looking so depressed and dispirited. a murder case that we might have already seen or read thousand times. boring script with boring cliched dialog such as q and a: q:'how could i compensate...' , a:'you can comensate...by making love to me...' the scearnrio and the storyline were both extremely cliched and formulaic like the novel, there's nothing much to tell, so the space between lines got to be widened a lot, the font size also got to be larger and thicker than regular font, almost reached the size of large print one, so more pages, at lease 100 more pages, could be subtly added. the movie, by the same token, did exactly as the novel: slow paced, lots walk around, talk around, lots sitting down, sipping drinks, pondering, sighing, interviewing, tough talks from some related suspects, some shootings. a lame and bore-you-to-death ballooned tiny murder case, mysteriously added a female school superintendent with foreign accent and so predictably scripted as soon as jesse stone went to school, an inevitable sex relationship was doomed to happen. so, what else is new? and what else you still want to know? for tom selleck himself, it's easy money by just walking around, talking some, chewing some, drinking some for two movies like this in a row.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect actor plus great character equals TV magic.......2007-04-28

Tom Selleck IS Jesse Stone, a character created by the great mystery author Robert Parker. Selleck plays a burned out, alcoholic LA cop who takes a job in the small town of Paradise, Massachusetts as sheriff. "Death in Paradise" is a tale of domestic violence, mob intrigue and the poignant, obsessive quest by the emotionally damaged Stone for the killer of a young girl. This story line actually occurred in the Parker series prior to the novel that was the basis for CBS's fabulously successful "Stone Cold", Selleck's first outing as Jesse Stone. The screenwriters tweaked the plot of "Death in Paradise" a bit to make it a sequel to "Stone Cold" with excellent results. "Death in Paradise" features a powerhouse cameo by Steven Baldwin. In my opinion, Parker's Jesse Stone series is head and shoulders above the famous Spencer books. The Stone made-for-TV movies are quality productions with superb acting, beautiful cinematography and haunting music. Exceptional TV. Highly, highly recommended. You must also get: Stone Cold and Jesse Stone - Night Passage. The latest Jesse Stone movie is "Sea Change" which aired on CBS in May 2007. Can't wait for it to hit DVD!

A complicated movie about the Central Intelligence Agency and its agents, The Good Shepherd isn't your typical spy movie. Though it stars Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity films) and Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Lara Croft franchise)--actors with considerable experience in the action-espionage genre--The Good Shepherd requires that they play more subdued and (much less interesting) characters here. The movie focuses on the career or Edward Wilson (Damon), a privileged Yale graduate who goes on to help found the CIA. He is a quiet, serious, and guarded man, even in the most intimate moments with his civilian wife (Jolie, in a role that wastes her talent). Set against a backdrop of real-life events such as the Bay of Pigs, The Good Shepherd is meticulous in creating a realistic timeframe. The film gets a jolt of excitement when Robert DeNiro (in his first directing role since 1993's A Bronx Tale) peppers the screen with appearances by Joe Pesci, Alec Baldwin, and William Hurt. But those moments are too infrequent. At 157 minutes long, the film is crammed with many factual details, but the characters are shortchanged when it comes to development. Viewers have to wonder why anyone, much less someone like Wilson who has everything going for him, would devote his life to a thankless job that brings so little happiness to himself and his family. The Good Shepherd is an ambitious but flawed film. The actors do a formidable job with a well-intentioned but meandering script. However, we meet so many characters and learn so little about each that it's difficult to drum up much empathy for any of them. --Jae-Ha Kim

Description

Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Robert De Niro star in this powerful thriller about the birth of the CIA. Edward Wilson (Damon) believes in America, and will sacrifice everything he loves to protect it. But as one of the covert founders of the CIA, Edward's youthful idealism is slowly eroded by his growing suspicion of the people around him. Everybody has secrets…but will Edward's destroy him? With an all-star cast including Alec Baldwin, Billy Crudup, William Hurt, Timothy Hutton and John Turturro, it's the gripping story David Ansen of Newsweek hails as "spellbinding."

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars good shepard, BAD movie.......2007-07-05

Wow - I like all kinds of movies, and thought the combination of story, DiNiro and a great cast would make this a great flick...NOT. This is one of the most boring, overly complex and simply crappy movie I have ever seen. I thought the Larry the Cable Guy disaster 'Health Inspector' was the bottom of the barrel - we just found a new bottom with this one.

The main problem I find with this movie is the total focus on the dedicated, dull character Matt Damon plays. Mind you, there are a few great moments (especially when he talks to Pesci), but just no enough to make this 'compelling'. Acutally, when I see that word describing a movie on the box, I tend to think that this is really the only verb one could use because 'good' would be a stretch!

With all the really great and even mediocre movies out there, pass on this one...you'll be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars CIA spies.......2007-07-04

Movie was great - a little slow at times, but the subject matter was very interesting....

1 out of 5 stars C.I.A. Confused I Am.......2007-07-03

The Good Shephard was one of those movies I had no desire to see in theaters so I rented it with a friend instead. I love movies that involve your complete attention and have to be watched more than once to catch everything- but this movie was terrible. It jumped around way too much and left little explanations for any actions that were performed. Unless you knew exactly what was going on during which year, and I'm assuming most people don't, then you become confused and aggravated trying desperatly to figure out what they are talking about. My friend was even more aggravated than I was.

I don't recommend the movie if you are looking to be educated on the birth of the CIA.

Also, there is violence and sexuality in this movie so it may not be appropriate for kids.

1 out of 5 stars Boring as Heck !!!!!!.......2007-06-28

I like DeNiro, I like Damon, and I really like conspiracy movies. So I was really hyped to see this. Than I did...And it was the most boring movie I've ever seen!!! How can DeNiro who's been so fun to watch for the past 20 years and Matt Damon who I loved in the Ocean's 11, 12, and 13 movies suck it up so bad in this? Now the acting is really great and that's about the only redeeming quality about this movie, but I didn't see it to see great acting. I wanted to be entertained and this movie really didn't help there.

If you see it, than make sure your not sitting comfortably because your going to fall asleep. I did about 1 hour in and than woke up 5 mintues later to see that nothing exciting was happening and I fell back to sleep.

2 out of 5 stars Over-hyped, over-cast, poorly written.......2007-06-27

I had high expectations for this film - it was hyped up pretty good, and how could it not be with the all star cast. The imagery in the film was strong and compelling, as was the subject matter. For a contemporary film, I think they did a pretty good job of splicing historical aspects of the US's conflicts over the past 70 years, into a fictional (as far as I know?) film/story.

With that said, the characters were poorly developed, and the film itself lacked any real emotion. I think the best way to describe the flaw in this film is that I was aware I was watching a film - a good film makes you forget you're even watching a film, and you effortlessly empathize with the characters. The poor writing was directly responsible for this. The film was predictable as well - (spoiler warning) - you knew that the brother was going to tell Matt Damon that Angelina Jolie was pregnant was soon as you saw him on the beach - and, you knew that the poetry professor was going to come on to Matt Damon as soon as he said 'I'd like to see you in my office'...The formulaic Hollywood film factory at its best/worst.

Literary adaptations just don't get any better than director Joe Wright's 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen's classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well executed. It's a more rural England that we see here, circa 1790 (as opposed to Austen's early 19th century), in which Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is one of several sisters primed for marriage, with an anxious mother (Brenda Blethyn) only too desperate to see her daughters paired off with the finest, richest husbands available. Elizabeth is strong-willed and opinionated, but her head (not to mention her pride and prejudice) lead her heart astray when she meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), whose own sense of decency and discretion (not to mention his pride and prejudice) prevent him from expressing his mutual affection. They're clearly meant for each other, and as Knightley's performance lights up the screen (still young enough to be girlishly impertinent, yet wise beyond her 20 years), Austen's timeless romance yields yet another timeless adaptation, easily on par with the beloved BBC miniseries that has been embraced by millions since originally broadcast in 1995. Individual tastes will vary as to which version should be considered "definitive," but with a stellar supporting cast including Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland, this impeccable production achieves its own kind of perfection. --Jeff Shannon

Description

One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?!.......2007-06-30

Nothing that happens in this movie makes any sense. It's just a big f***ing ball of bulls***t. If you must watch it, I advise drinking heavily first.

p.s. I thought Conan O'Brien did pretty well as the autistic man who marries the hot blonde. WHOOPS, hope I didn't spoil any surprises.

p.p.s. The douche that Kiera K meets in the beginning? They get married too. SURPRISE!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Skip the Movie; Read the Book!.......2007-06-29

I count "Pride and Prejudice" among my top-three favorite books...ever. So, I was really looking forward to this cinematic version of it. I was sorely disappointed. In all fairness, two hours just can't do justice to this wonderful novel, but this movie didn't even scratch the surface. And Keira Knightley as Lizzy? Didn't quite work for me. I say don't waste your money. The book is cheaper and will afford you greater hours upon hours of pleasure. I dare say, you'll want to read it again, which is more than I can say about viewing this film.

5 out of 5 stars Even the purist likes it..........2007-06-28

Although I believed the A&E version could never be replaced in my heart due to its true-to-the-book writing, this is a wonderful sweetened condensed version and sparks a great romantic chord. Though I still adore the A&E version and would recommend it to anyone who's never read the book or is, like myself, a purist, this is a great little flick.

5 out of 5 stars Will they get together?!.......2007-06-27

I love it! It doesn't go into as much detail as the first Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996) ,then again that was five hours long, and some of the best scences weren't even in the book but whats wrong with that. There are some fantastic scences, spectacular scenery, and Pride and Prejudice is one of the few movies where you are worried if they are really going to get together so it keeps you attention the entire time Knightly plays Elizabeth beautifully and Matthew Macfadyen is the perfect Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice definitly didn't recieve the explosure it deserved.

5 out of 5 stars A breathtaking tale to watch again and again.......2007-06-25

I have not read the book - so I am reviewing based solely on my enjoyment of the film for its own sake. It is a lovely, whimsical, romantic tale that can be enjoyed many times over. I appreciated the refreshing lack of profanity, crudity, and senseless violence that floods today's movies.

Beautiful scenary, well acted - thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend this!

Defense attorney Bobby Donnell could've had his pick of high-paying jobs at any number of fancy Boston law firms. Instead, he chose to be his own boss. The Practice: Volume One combines all six episodes from the debut mini season in 1997, along with seven episodes from the sophomore year. Though it would've been a more cohesive collection if entire two seasons were included on this four-disc DVD set, it's still a welcome addition for fans of this David E. Kelley drama. Starring Dylan McDermott as Bobby, the cast also includes Kelli Williams as uber-attorney Lindsay Dole, Emmy Award winner Camryn Manheim as Ellenor Frutt, and former cop-turned-defense attorney Eugene Young (Steve Harris). Then there's their friend--and also foil--prosecutor Helen Gamble (Lara Flynn Boyle), who admires the team's tenacity but stops at nothing to beat them in court. During the early seasons, Donnell's firm doesn't bring in enough money to decorate their offices, which are filthy--just like many of their clients. But as they slowly build a reputation as the go-to firm for clients who most likely are guilty but want to be set free, they begin to wrestle with moral dilemmas. As can be expected from a Kelley series, the cases presented here are fabulously sensationalist. But they also touch on human emotions, such as when they represent a client who was fired for being unattractive. The lawyers also have bittersweet moments as they realize they have surpassed their former legal mentors, some of whom have been seduced by the promise of big money. The most compelling episodes involve Dole--a brilliant but unseasoned attorney--who slowly and methodically tackles the tobacco industry. While the opponent has teams of senior attorneys, associates, paralegals, and interns at its disposal, Dole tirelessly works the case and refuses to give in, even when the outcome seems inevitable. The end result isn't believable in the least, but her passion sets the groundwork for one of the show's most watchable characters. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars Great Show.......2007-07-04

This show brought back something that was missing from prime time television for a long time: good writing and acting. The only problem is that you want more than 13 episodes included in this set. The first two seasons of The Practice was the best. Buy this and you won't be disappointed. Guest stars such as Linda Hunt and Ed Asner are great.

5 out of 5 stars Glad It's Finally Here.......2007-06-19

I received Season 1 last week. I love it! I never missed this show when it was in Prime time and still watch reruns almost daily on tv. Now Season One is finally on DVD. Thia is one of the best Series out there. You have suspense, law, romance, friendship, triumph and tragedy. What more could one ask for? I hope it does not take long for the other Seasons of The Practice to come out on DVD. Fans have waited long enough. Get us the rest of the Seasons please!

5 out of 5 stars Possible Incorrect Information.......2007-06-06

I obtained a copy of this in Australia, which I am assuming is exactly the same as the one listed here as they have the same cover and release date.

The episodes included are not the ones previously listed that were apparently the 'original full season one', but are the complete season one and the first seven episodes of season two:

Pilot
Part 1
Trial & Error
Part IV
Part V
Part IV
Reasonable Doubts
Betrayal
The Blessing
Dog Bite
First Degree
Sex, Lies & Monkeys
Search & Seizure
Plus one special feature called 'Setting Up The Practice'.

4 out of 5 stars Finally.......2007-05-30

I AM SO GLAD THAT THEY ARE RELEASING THIS SHOW... FINALLY!!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR FOREVER TO SEE THIS OUT ON DVD. I AM SO EXCITED!!

5 out of 5 stars An incrediable show on DVD and yup the waiting was over.......2007-05-01

I have been checking the local stores about the release of this amazing TV series that has grown up with me with lots of tracing and enjoyment. Eventually, having resolved those strategic issues (thought it couldn't be technical or legal or else), marketers 'produced' them and made them available to us. But we had to wait another month, vs 10 years from the original production? Strange marketing plans. Can't wait to get them out here in Hong Kong and hopefully it will get distributed in the right channel and more importantly in the right prices.

Look forward to have these titles helping me to pick up my childhood's memories.

5 out of 5 stars Grow a funny bone, why don't you?.......2007-06-12

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. All the actors/actresses play an integral part in this movie. I guess that some people can't think "outside the box". Not every movie has to make sense or have a solid plot to be good or funny. Sometimes stupid humor works, and this is one of those occasions.

5 out of 5 stars Funny as Hell !!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-29

I watched this movie on HBO so I had to add it to my collection. The unrated movie is even better. I give it two Thumbs up :)

For anyone who thought the Oscar-winning documentary March of the Penguins was the most marvelous cinematic moment for these nomads of the south, you haven't seen nothing yet. Happy Feet is an animated wonder about a penguin named Mumble who can't sing, but can dance up a storm. George Miller, the driving force behind the Babe (and Mad Max) movies, takes another creative step in family entertainment with this big, beautiful, music-fueled film that will have kids and their parents dancing in the streets. From his first moment alive, Mumble (voiced Elijah Woods) feels the beat and can't stop dancing. Unfortunately, emperor penguins are all about finding their own heart song, and the dancing youngster--as cute as he is--is a misfit. Luckily, he bumps into little blue penguins and a Spanish-infused group (led by Robin Williams) and begins a series of adventures. Miller has an exceptional variety of entertainment: Busby Berkley musical numbers, amusement-park thrills, exciting chase sequences (seals and orca lovers might like think otherwise), and even an environmental message that doesn't weigh you down. Best of all, you don't know where the movie is going in the last act, a rare occurrence these days in family entertainment. A fusion of rock songs, mashed-up and otherwise, are featured; this movie is as much a musical as a comedy. Mumble's solo dance to a new version of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" by Fantasia, Patti, and Yolanda may be the most joyful moment on camera in 2006. --Doug Thomas

On the DVD
There are two new animated sequences, which aren't incorporated into the film. One's a half-minute hackysack-themed bit, but the other is a good-looking, two-minute scene featuring the late Steve Irwin as an albatross, who, with Mumble, encounters a blue whale. "Dance Like a Penguin: Stomp to the Beat" is hosted by Savion Glover, whose dancing was motion-captured for the film, but other than a couple basic tips, it's pretty much a demonstration rather than a lesson. In addition to the two music videos (Gia's "Hit Me Up" and Prince's "The Song of the Heart"), "I Love to Singa" is an appropriately matched 1936 Merrie Melodies cartoon in which a young owl ruffles feathers by wanting to sing jazz for his classical-music-loving family. --David Horiuchi

Description

In the great nation of Emperor Penguins, deep in Antarctica, you're nobody unless you can sing - which is unfortunate for Mumble (ELIJAH WOOD), who is the worst singer in the world. He is born dancing to his own tune...tap dancing. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria (BRITTANY MURPHY), happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange "hippity- hoppity" ways. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins - the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon (ROBIN WILLIAMS), the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land, Mumble seeks the counsel of Lovelace the Guru (also voiced by ROBIN WILLIAMS), a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will answer any of life's questions for the price of a pebble. Together with Lovelace and the Amigos, Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and, after some epic encounters, proves that by being true to yourself, you can make all the difference in the world.

2 out of 5 stars Worth viewing once........2007-07-05

I have to say, after reading previous reviews, the quality, or lack thereof, of this movie, I was not really surprised when I finally watched this movie. It was a less than subtle attempt to present an environmental message, disguised as a children's movie. While some of the music was enjoyable, the actual plot was not well developed, and seemed to utilize excessive and blatant stereotyping of religious conservatives. The characters did not prove all that endearing, and the environmental message grew to an extreme at the end, rather than presenting a more realistic solution to the problem at hand, which was also overdone in its presentation. This is supposed to be entertainment directed at children, I believe, and in that, it only partially succeeds. It was a good idea, in a general sense, but the specifics were poorly handled, and came across as an alternatively weak and heavy-handed attempt to present a political message in what should have been a cute children's movie.

That said, I would definitely recommend this movie be viewed once, as it works better when watched for what it comes off as, rather than for what it is. It works much better if viewed as a comedy, somewhat in the vein of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail;" specifically a comedy that mixes the painfully inept with the corny to create a movie so pathetic it is funny. With that in mind, and a readiness to ignore the heavy-handed message, this movie can be quite enjoyable, once.

Happy Feet (Widescreen Edition)
very enjoyable and would be a great movie to have for a whole family.

1 out of 5 stars Crappy Feet.......2007-07-03

I'll try not to say much, because I don't want to waste much time on this terrible film. First, let me say that this is the worst movie I've ever seen from start to finish. Usually if a movie is this bad I simply get up and walk out. I saw this at the theater with my 4 year old son, and he even asked if we could leave halfway through the film (and he loves movies)... for some stupid reason, I insisted we stay (probably the $15 bucks I'd spent)

The problem? Weak character development and a terrible story line. The characters are simply forgettable and the story is regretable. The environmental agenda while commendable, comes across as pathetic (this is a kid's movie, right???)
I've read in other reviews that the animation is good, even amazing - but that's not really true. It's average if you compare it to today's standards. If this movie had been released ten years ago, yes - the animation would have been amazing - but at this point it's completely average.

So - the only reason I am wasting more time on this film is to beg those of you who have not seen it - please take my advise and skip it! It's not worth the time it'd take you to watch it - really, it's that bad!!!
(if I had the option, I'd give it no stars)

5 out of 5 stars Creative and Thoroughly Well Done.......2007-06-30

Memphis sings, dances and speaks like Elvis.

Norma Jean comes complete with a well-placed mole and Marilyn Monroe's accent.

Mumble's wide-eyed, upbeat nature can't be beat.

Robin Williams' Lovelace is warm and smooth.

And of course there is Savion Glover's happy footwork!

I loved this movie and continue to watch it over and over again, when I need something sweet and uplifting without the calories.
