Touching, awe inspiring.......2007-07-02
I was simply touched by this film even after seeing it twice. Regardless of any religious beliefs you may or may not have, the lesson taught in this film is that love, forgiveness, and asking for forgiveness (repenting) will keep you from a wasted life of hatered and bitterness. Harboring those two things will eat you alive from the inside out.
End of the Spear Film Review.......2007-06-14
FoxFaith's "End of the Spear" was on my list of must-sees immediately after the DVD release. I was very pleased with what I saw. Great casting and stunning locations made this film seem very real. The story is a compelling and suspenseful one. All of the scenes are extremely well-written and choreographed. It's a little drawn out for about the last 17 minutes of the film, but this is not a major setback considering the quality of the motion picture itself. Above all else, everything even the names are historically accurate, down to every meticulous detail. A must see for EVERYONE!
Not Made By Christians?.......2007-06-08
This story of Christian missionaries who died at the hands of the very men they intended to introduce to the love of God is a powerful story, and when friends enthusiastically recommended the DVD to me, I decided to buy it.
It proved to be something of a disappointment, as it became clear from the start that the film was not made by Christians. I kept looking for signs of the heartfelt devotion of the missionaries to the God they so passionately loved as to be willing to die for Him, but in the scenes of their daily lives, they seemed to be very ordinary people. Sadly, the missionaries were made to appear simply as curious adventurers who went out to a jungle to see what they might do to help some natives.
This movie seems aimed at the secular public in general. It will not serve to inspire the many Christians who, like me, might buy the film to derive some inspiration.
Love this movie.......2007-05-23
This is one of my favorite movies. Such a wonderful story of God's love and forgiveness.
A GREAT MOVIE.......2007-05-23
What else can I say? It's a great movie all around. A very unusual and true story and many great testimonies of faith and love from beginning to end.

Like his free-spirited cousin Dora, the Explorer, eight-year old animated character Diego Marquez makes his film debut, an animal rescue extravaganza based on Nick Jr.'s show, Go, Diego, Go!. The preschool program focuses on animal exploration and discovery while incorporating Latin American culture, Spanish vocabulary, and plenty of audience participation. Based on the sweeping success of the series, The Great Dinosaur Rescue applies the same winsome elements to an original storyline that starts in a dinosaur museum with some fun facts about the fascinating reptiles. When Diego, Dora, and Baby Jaguar hear Alicia tell a story about a Maiasaura who got separated from her family, they know it's time for a rescue. With a little help from viewers, the team jumps back in time to the age of the dinosaurs to find Maia and return her safely to Egg Island. But the journey has some obstacles to overcome--including muddy pits, rocky cliffs, and a rumbling volcano--which require teamwork, cool gadgetry, and Diego's unique ability to communicate with animals. Preschoolers are invited to interact with the story as Diego rouses them--often in Spanish--to "Stand up!" and stretch, stomp, and jump. Integrating repetition, music, and movement, the film (like the series), is a standout for teaching problem-solving skills along with an appreciation of the animal kingdom. The 50-minute VHS ends with a computer-like game offering a question/answer review of the story; the 92-minute DVD includes two bonus episodes, "Diego Saves Baby Humpback Whale" and "Rescue The Red-Eyed Tree Frogs." (Ages 3 to 5) --Lynn Gibson

This DVD is worth ever penny. My two sons love to watch this on road trips. Not only do my kids like Diego, but they love dinosaurs. If your kids like Diego this is the video for them!!
Diego is great.......2007-05-07
I purchased this DVD based on other peoples' recommendations here on Amazon. My granddaughter absolutely loved it. (She is 31 months old.) She is really fascinated with Dinosaurs and I didn't even know that she had just been introduced to Diego. I can highly recommend it.
Interactive and Educational.......2007-04-18
My 2 year old son is enjoying this interactive dvd. The content prompts the toddler to respond via words and actions rather than just passively watching the visual content. It also introduces concepts like helping others in trouble, working in a group, solving problem and various others. I am happy to see my son enjoying this dvd.
Big Hit!.......2007-03-21
My grandson is a big Diego fan! He love's this show. Entertaining for him and grandma too! Don't miss this one!
Very Enjoyable!!.......2007-02-25
My 2 year daughter absolutely love Diego. At first she was into Dora but she loves and dances to all the Diego songs and I find myself singing along with her at times. So this disc is definitely a thumbs up.

Highly Educational.......2007-05-10
It is highly educational with lots of interesting facts about the animals and their habitat. The way the facts were presented in this DVD makes learning easy and memorable.
My 3YO daughter could remember the number of toes a jaguar have, the types of animals who sleep in the day and the features of a macaw, by just after watching the DVD once!
This show is a good extension to Dora. Now i'm convinced that i should get the whole series of Go Diego Go!
Great DVD!.......2007-05-07
Both of my kids, [..], enjoy watching this video. It has cute stories and they learn a little about animals and there habitat while watching. The DVD has entertainment and some educational value.

My granddaughter loves Diego and Dora. Seems there is some controversy about them, but our family loves them. They are colorful, well thoughtout, with great different characters and different animals. Always positive outcomes with showing the desire to help. The interactive part is very entertaining for the young ones and educational.

Wonderful!.......2007-06-10
Wonderful story that empowers woman! It is a very fresh, fun, an inspiring story! The acting of all the characters is incredible. I love to see Fernando Colunga! The editing is very well done, excellent job!
great novela... check out the website for the complete novela.......2007-04-06
I loved this novela when I was younger... and when I found out that I could buy the DVD set I was ecstatic. But when you buy this much shorter version, you lose a lot of detail. I decided to surf the net and I found a great website "Novelas R Us" that contains the complete novelas. I just bought Corazon Salvaje (on 20 DVDs) and am going to buy this one (on 19 DVDs). The best thing about it is that they are only 65 dollars each (considering that you get only a few hours for 20 bucks). I can't wait to receive it.
Although, some people prefer the shorter versions, I like the longer ones because of the details that are missed in the shorter ones. This novela should be enjoyed in detail and I am certainly going to shop for other favorite novelas of mine.
la usurpadora.......2007-03-21
well i ve watched it before bat i didnt finish watchin da hole series???
Gaby Spanic tour de force.......2007-01-18
La Usurpadora was a good novela, but it was edited too much. Gaby Spanic is excellent! She plays twin sisters, one good, the other bad. Fernando Colunga , Chantal Andere, Arturo Peniche are worth watching also. The story was cut up so badly, now all I want is to see the complete novela! Plus, there's no subtitles at all. Therefore, this is not a classic DVD, but it is a classic novela. I feel I would not recommend it, it's been hacked to pieces! And no subtitles! I want complete novelas!
GOOD STORY BUT DISSAPOINTED FOR THE CUTTING SCENE!!.......2006-10-03
I LIKE THIS TELENOVELAS VERY MUCH, especially the acting of Gabriela which i think very great since she must play two role..the story itself was great and not confusing.i have seen this in complete series when it was air on the televesion, but when i was thinking to buy this dvd in order to collected it.. i found that it was totally cut too many scene which i think was important and thats right NO ENGLISH SUBTITLE at all! i have try to play it on player & computer but still no subtitle, so please please to amazon and the xenon or televisa people..please make the complete series and added with subtitle, i'm sure that there are many fan's who wants to buy and collect this telenovela, not even just this one but for the rest telenovelas too. we wont be mine to pay more for that.
afterall i really enjoy this telenovelas and still looking to buy another telenovelas.. so thankfull if they will soon released the complete series of LA USURPADORA.

Customer Reviews:
Great Novela, Not Good DVD.......2007-05-18
This a great Novela,I also understand that was very long,But to many parts were cut and it made the novela very short. It is still a good novela to have on dvd, it focuses on all the main parts.
a truly great telenovela.......2007-04-06
This is a review of the telenovela itself, which just ended on a late-night Univision rebroadcasting. This is where I saw Tres Mujeres, not on the abridged DVD.
When it first replaced Amada Enemiga on the light-night lineup, I didn't think that I would like Tres Mujeres. But, as with any good telenovela, it got me hooked. What strikes me most is how natural the acting is, as well as the script. Since most telenovelas last only a few months, and Spanish-language networks air so many a day, there are lots of duds that arrive off the factory line, with cartoony acting, bad dialogue, etc. Tres Mujeres, by contrast, feels like a labor of love.
It seems that many out there felt that Tres Mujeres lasted too long. Since it became a surprise hit when originally aired, the decision was made to add something like sixty more episodes. Yes, it dragged a little at times, but never so much that I lost interest. Honestly, the only damper was having to catch it at one o'clock in the morning, for the late-night rebroadcast. There were plenty of cliffhangers to keep me intrigued.
In addition to being well-produced, Tres Mujeres was also well-cast. Norma Herrera's Greta character was a great creation; perhaps a little over-the-top at times, but always fun to watch. I like Norma Herrera so much that it disappointed me to see her play such a subdued character in Barrera de Amor last year.
It's great to see that such a good telenovela got the support it deserved. A number of notable actors joined Tres Mujeres as the plot developed, such as Niurka, Dominika Paleta, Eduardo Verastegui, etc.
Yes, there were elements that I didn't like, such as Sebastian and Fatima's constant make-up, break-up. I also hated that one of the central characters dies in the next-to-last episode. Still, the final episode (mostly) ties up all the loose ends, and makes you reflect on the goodness of life.
Good novela, bad video.......2006-09-07
I really liked this novela when it was on tv, but I think video was a bad rendition of it. I understand the original was too long and needed to be cut, but I don't think the editing was done well. So much was taken out that the story line ends up being confusing if one has not seen the original. It is also hard to really get attached to the characters or the storyline this way, so it's almost pointless to watch it at all. I guess it is ok for someone who has seen the original and just wants to own a copy of the video to be reminded of the novela, but for a first-time viwer this is a waste of time! I was also disappointed they didn't include the original soundtrack with Ricardo Arjona "Desnuda". It was a much better song than the obscure piece that was included in the video. I wonder why they changed that (maybe Arjona didn't give them permission?).
Tres Mujeres.......2006-02-17
This is a good novela that starts out kind of slow but gets more interesting as the plots develops turning pretty good at the end. The novela was very well put together and easy to follow. I just wish it was a little bit longer or like someone else said in a review I'll be more than happy to pay more for the full version of this novelas.
good but a little confusing.......2005-09-16
very good novela! I love the Spanish novela's but hate that they get cut. I understand that they are quite long but i would much rather pay more for the dvd's and see the whole thing as some of it got confusing as it got pretty jumpy and was obvious some was missing. The novela itself it great and i love that they have the english subtitles.

Masterpiece of perversion, the fetish movie to end all fetishes.......2006-06-30
In his most original (at least from what I've seen), very different from his other films, most disturbing yet most hilarious film, the great magician Jan Svankmajer, animator-surrealist from Prague, makes his modern-day city the setting for the story of six ordinary people with extraordinary fantasies. The film that acknowledges as inspirations Sigmund Freud, Max Ernst, Luis Bunuel (the admitted fetishist himself) and the Marquis De Sade (all of them I am sure would love it) portrays the strange world of hidden fetishes that can be found in the most unexpected places. Three men and three women encounter one another through the day and exchange the knowing glances even though some of them don't even know each other but there is a certain connection and they feel it. They all are "conspirators of pleasure" who spend the most part of the film meticulously, painstakingly and creatively inventing methods, tools and constructions for fulfilling their bizarre fantasies. We will observe chicken suit with the wings made of umbrellas. There is a woman-post worker with a fetish for bread. She rolls up balls of bread and sucks them up her nose through a straw (honestly, not my idea of fun but hey, you should see the look at her face). There are unusual brushes made up of rolling pins, pan lids, and stolen pieces of fur that one man, the detective rubs over his body while his wife, the TV news-person feels neglected and buys some live carp that she strokes and feeds them the bread balls which were delivered by the post worker. The TV lady has no idea that she's been an object of a newsagent- guy's desire. He constructed the machine that consisted of several mechanic arms which can hug, stroke, rub, pull...gently while he watches her on TV and reaches his climax at the same time as she does helped by her carps but I am going to stop right here and only add that "some of our most exciting sexual experiences take place entirely within the minds of other people." (Roger Ebert - not about "Conspirators of Pleasure" but I thought it'd fit perfectly here)
What can I say? The film is a satire on human perversion but what makes it unique, its style. It has no dialog whatsoever but it is not needed, really. The lust and desires don't need words, they speak for themselves. There are the moments in the film when you'd look in total disbelieve at the weird characters and their bizzar objects of longing but you just cant help smiling. It's been over the year since I discovered Svankmajer and I've been trying to see anything that he's made. He's never disappointed me. He looks inside my mind, takes the the hidden desires and weird fetishes that I would never want to be uncovered and I would only admit to myself I have, turns them into the images hellishly disturbing but mesmerizing and hilarious and threw them back at me using his unmatched and brilliant combination of live action film-making, special effects, and his deservingly celebrated animations techniques.
Masterpiece of perversion, the fetish movie to end all fetishes.
Long Live Jan Svankmajer!
A Mailcarrier's Childish Phantasy?.......2006-04-02
Excellent! What a storyteller! I had only seen Jan's short "Food" before this, and so had a predisposition to see this film in a mirthful light. I agree with the Surrealist classification, in that it reminds me of Bunuel's "L'Age Dor"; long introductory scenes that achieve the necessary mundane boredom to launch the ensuing bizareness. A man kissing a tv and spitting out water; Yeah!
I particularly enjoyed the gorgeous arthouse shots peppered throughout; candles reflected in a tub of water, a sudden closeup of a chicken's ass.
The director's method of engaging the viewer is so masterful, that by the end you've become a bit of a detective puzzling out the connections. Let me get this straight; the mailcarrier delivered the letter that told him Sunday was the day, she made fish food for the anchor woman's fish, and delivered straw to the trash bin for the dominatrix. Do her x-ray eyed looks at each customer mean she knows, or is engineering this whole thing? A mailcarrier's phantasy, perhaps? The blurring of reality was rather intriguing too. When several characters "achieve" their enjoyment, "reality" seems to stay slightly kinked; is the newscaster really orgasming on tv, did she really give that guy a knowing look, and (like "Food") haven't they just switched fetishes now?
A wonderful romp through the adult equivalent of childhood fantasy play. Definitely recommended; if nothing else, the characterization of the detective is priceless! Stealing and molesting passers-by clothing to satisfy himself, Yeah!

Surreal Study of Human Interaction Found in the Subconscious.......2005-04-08
Life has its unique peculiarities, as individuals seek privacy and personal satisfaction when societal situations usher them into intimate seclusion. Jan Svankmajer illustrates these peculiarities through six different city residents that in their own privacy fulfill personal void through their most intimate and personal desires. Expressed in the most bizarre, surreal, and peculiar manner, the audience secretively gets to experience these desires, as the six characters close the doors while entering a very personal place where only they are aware of what they are doing.
Much of the film plays with social symbolism and human interaction reflected through the character's intimate and personal moments, which are highlighted through clever editing and figurative camerawork. Nothing is said, only images present the mannerisms of the characters, as the interaction between the characters such as looks and assumptions drive them further into their own sexual obsessions. These obsessions are all surreal and bizarre. Some examples are a man building some form of robot that can connect with an attractive news anchor, a man constructing a bird-like head for some personal erotic revenge, and a woman who brings home live fish as a substitute to her absent husband.
The opening credits accompany a number of erotic prints that remove the allusions and directly display what is to come in the film, as the film depicts the unusual fetishes. These fetishes display bizarrely amusing moments that seem inflated into absurd proportion, yet the human behaviors appear authentic in the moment. Underneath the surrealism, the audience can reach a repressed and personal side of the characters, as they act out their fantasies in the most outlandish manners.
Jan Svankmajer is known for his often bizarre imagery while using puppetry, stop-motion animation, and other creative visualizations. Conspirators of Pleasure follows the same trend with the use of strange and outlandish creations through the intimate personal life of six city tenants. Stop-motion, editing, puppetry, and efficient camerawork brings the audience a truly harrowing surreal study of human interaction found in the subconscious, as elements resembling voodoo, fetishes, and chickens concoct an unpleasant atmosphere. Svankmajer's cinematic mixture eventually blends into an intelligent philosophical and psychological study of people and their peculiarities.
good for begginers.......2004-02-01
this one from Jan was cool, but just not quite as trippy as Faust or his collection of short film dvds,I thought.I did think it was funny though!I liked the short film "food"(included w/ the dvd)better than "conspirators of pleasure",actually-and you can get that short w/ the jan collected shorts vol. 2 dvd.I couldn't see paying $26 for this dvd, though.get alice, collected shorts 1+2,or faust before this one.those are actually more worth the money as far as I'm concerned.

Extraordinary!!.......2007-04-13
Few movies are better than the book that contains the history that inspires them. Old Gringo is an example. Carlos Fuentes wrote Gringo Viejo and in my opinion, this is his more successful work; but Fuentes is lazy and some chapters of his books are unconnected. Nevertheless, the movie has a perfect rhythm. Each personage has an extraordinary evolution during the whole film.
There cannot be the slightest doubt: Gregory Peck was the perfect actor for to be Ambrose Bierce.
The Romanticization of Failure.......2007-01-16
Gregory Peck, Jane Fonda, Jimmy Smits, are politically left of center. Their involvement in the filming of leftist novelist Carlos Fuentes' "Old Gringo" almost certainly expresses their own infatuation with radical politics. How tragic. This film is nothing more than a romanticization of a failure. Do you want to know why Mexico is today a poverty stricken nation? Why so many of its citizens desperately desire to escape to the United States? Much of this has to do with the murderous activities of Pancho Villa and other so-called revolutionaries in the early part of the twentieth Century. They left the Mexicans unable to form a viable government. The rule of law was rejected in favor of revolutionary dictators claiming to represent the wishes of the common folk. Gregory Peck portrays Ambrose Bierce who naively considered Villa to be another George Washington. What can I add concerning the infamous Ms. Fonda? She has, in real life, even praised Communism. In this particular role as Harriet Winslow, Fonda is far too old. Another reviewer correctly pointed out that she looks every bit of her fifty one years---and the part calls for a woman who is much younger. Fonda could literally be Jimmy Smits' (Gen. Tomas Arroyo) mother. I was unable to take seriously their romance.
Ambrose Bierce is trying to make sense of his long life before passing onto the great unknown. The spinster Harriet Winslow is an existential mess. She is a true believer type easily seduced by the utopian fantasies of a better world---which usually end up causing substantially more misery in the real one. Bierce is trying to get the trigger happy Arroyo to kill him. Will he succeed? Should we care? The answer: we should not.

Jane Fonda As A Spinster? You Gotta Be Kidding Me!.......2006-09-23
In this movie we have the Real Life Of Oft Married Jane Fonda looking every one of her 51 years and trying to convince the viewer that she is a "spinster" which is a euphenism for the girls in my High School Class . Then we have the Academically Jaded Gregory Peck who bids farewell to his life of books and heads to Mexico. At the time this film was released I saw an interview with Ms. Fonda who seemed to have a Mutual Admiration Society going on with Mr. Peck and she was in rapture at Jimmy Smits being the next BIG star which didn't happen. The peasant women of loose moral character in this movie discover the Joys Of A Corset through Ms. Fonda which they feel gives them lots of power in getting the Mexican Soldiers to be willing to fight, get blown up and die. They are kind of like the Mexican Version of Cheerleaders from what I can gather. I don't know where all the big bucks went in the making of this movie but the scenery is quite pretty which is why I give it 5 stars.
Engrossing, Haunting and Beautiful .......2005-10-12
This movie was a surprise to me and a pleasant one and I would actually rate it four and a half stars. While I have never read the book on which it is based, I found it a haunting and memorable work of art in itself. The figure of Ambrose Bierce, as played by Gregory Peck, is quite fascinating but unless you are familiar with the writer (and even if you are)you may find the characterization rather hard to comprehend. However, Peck's performance is strong enough to carry you along despite this and his interaction with the other two characters--the frustrated spinster, played beautifully by Fonda, and the volatile and sexy rebel general played equally well by Smits--is totally engrossing. The love triangle, which seemed more of a father-daughter-lover relationship, could have been fleshed out more but was still pretty riveting. However, the real pull of the film is the beauty of the cinematography in battle scenes, love scenes and interiors, equally; the passion and brutality of the revolutionaries and at the same time their humanity, and the connection between the rather wildly different three central characters based on that humanity and despite the brutality, all during an epic era in the history of Mexico. I have watched this film several times now and each time I find new reasons to admire it, not the least of which is that it is just a wonderful story about characters who are electric, vibrant and mesmerizing in their search for meaning in their lives. It is fast becoming one of my all-time favorites.
Unlikely Romantic Triangle Set in Pancho Villa's Mexico.......2004-11-26
Argentinean director Luis Puenzo seems like a smart choice to helm this epic drama since his specialty seems to be offering probing character studies in the face of larger sociopolitical issues. But this 1989 movie falls short of expectations, especially if you've read Carlos Fuentes' 1985 novel upon which this movie is based. All the elements for success seem present - a fascinating historical setting (the Mexican Revolution); rather flamboyant characters (both fictitious and fictionalized); explosive battle scenes; dramatic executions; and a romantic triangle with gauzy love scenes. Indeed, the problem is that the elements don't quite add up to a cohesive whole that induces any heartfelt passion. Set in 1913, the story focuses on an American spinster named Harriet Winslow, who has been hired to be a governess for a wealthy Mexican family on their grand hacienda. The beginning of the story shows great promise as the period detail is vivid, and the set-up of the characters promises some intriguing interactions. However, when the three primary characters come together on the hacienda, the plot seems to narrow in scope, and the story's initial gallop slows to a cant until the conclusion.
I was afraid that at 51, Jane Fonda would be at least a decade too old to play Harriet, but she actually looks right most of the time, slightly worn but constantly engaged with the swirl of activities around her. However, with a stellar career spanning three decades, she just doesn't surprise with this performance (unlike, say, her alcoholic has-been actress in 1986's "The Morning After"), and after one more film, she retired from the big screen for the next fifteen years. Granted she is playing an uptight woman on the verge of a political and sexual awakening, she just comes across as too mannered and frankly too wizened to draw the carnal attentions of two completely different men. On the other hand, it's a joy to see the relish with which Gregory Peck plays Ambrose Bierce, the real American journalist who disappeared into Mexico at this time. His charisma intact, he makes palatable his romantic overtures to Harriet and brings a realistic blend of gusto and frailty to his constant philosophizing and his slow march toward death. As the virulent General Arroyo, one of Pancho Villa's men, Jimmy Smits has to maintain a delicate balancing act between quick-tempered, violent revolutionary and smitten romantic hero. He succeeds up to a point, especially in expressing his obsession with past injustices through firepower, but there is little chemistry between him and Fonda, which leaves the ending scenes oddly hollow. The one exception is the firing squad scene, which is sufficiently shocking. The film is not a complete misfire, but given its interesting mix of historical fact and fiction, I wish it was much more than it is, even though in Peck's case, it is.

Jarring modern costumes.......2007-06-08
While the singing is excellent and this operetta is loaded with marvelous tunes, I found the lack of period costumes jarring. I had last seen this production in a little jewel of a theater in Salzburg, and what a difference!
Nonetheless, I would recommend this DVD until something more authenic comes along. Sound and video are both excellent.
beautiful music.......2007-03-22
The story is a little bit silly and some of the comedy can fall flat. But the music is wonderful and the cast sings it this way. They also are excellent actors who can really make one believe in love. It helps that I understand German.
A great score.......2007-01-09
Der Graf von Luxemburg is a particularly strong Lehar score with memorable melodies piled on one another. Here the operetta is performed live before a highly appreciative audience. The singing, the conducting, and the sound are very good as is the acting. There are only two problems: the story is quite silly and there are no characters with whom one identifies with - as there are in the Merry Widow. Is this the fault of the director or of the original libretto? I do not know. But the music is great and makes a fine listen.
It could be so good..........2006-12-18
Enjoyable operetta and strong cast fortunately are not completely ruined by clueless director (who also "edited" pretty good original script so it lost any logic in its development).
Excellent Lehar to enjoy beside The Merry Widow........2006-11-10
The Count of Luxemburg can stand on its own as an enjoyable operetta. This particular DVD is delightful and proves that Lehar demands singers with exceptional talent and artistry. This outstanding cast deserves your attention. You won't be disappointed.
