Season Two of Waiting for God further exemplifies the comedic prowess of stars Graham Crowden and Stephanie Cole, as Tom and Diana, the feistiest personalities at Bayview Retirement Home. This season, viewers are also introduced to residents like Basil, the "sex pistol," fodder for Tom and Diana's acerbic wit. As in Season One, these unlikely friends sarcastically examine every aspect of aging, with unparalleled bitterness and theatrical panache. If some of Season One's episodes verged on dullness, the narratives in these episodes are loftier, providing more food for thought and room for creative scripting. Episode One launches the season with a funeral scene in which people take cell phone calls, and Tom and Diana discover they're at the wrong graveside. The rest of the segment is devoted to musings about life after death. In episode seven, Diana tries to help host the Glamorous Granny competition with a friendly demeanor, but cheer is too unnatural to her. The jokes this season are more morbid, the humor more sardonic, making it a more poignant critique of elderly living.

Sexual tension between Tom and Diana remains ambiguous this season, though Diana flatly rejects Tom's invitation to move in with him in Episode Two. Diana's staunch feminism is repeatedly elucidated when she takes offense with various situations, such as the Granny contest, or when a pretty new woman moves in on Episode Three, attracting the attentions of Bayview men. Diana's spinster appeal grows, though one wonders if and when she will ever let her guard down. Tom's character is deepened as well, as he confesses his loneliness and trains to be a Death counselor for those grappling with impending end. As much as the characters have changed, though, they will remain familiar to those who have appreciated them from the beginning. --Trinie Dalton

Description

At the Bayview Retirement Village the elderly are expected to grow old gracefully, enjoying their final years in peace, quiet and comfort... but not if Tom (Graham Crowden) and Diana (Stephanie Cole) have anything to do with it! In Season Two, Tom and Diana continue to be rebel senior citizens determined to squeeze the most from life before meeting their Maker. Mysterious thefts at Bayview set Diana and Tom off on a bit of sleuthing; however, the ingenuity leads Tom into hot water as he finds himself taking the rap for a shoplifting offense. Diana defends him as "the most harmless, boring person in the world." Meanwhile, Harvey, the despicable manager of Bayview, has determined to cut costs by employing a group of short foreigners...

5 out of 5 stars Love these 'old' people.......2007-06-22

What a joy to watch Diana and Tom's first season again. Fell in love with them years ago and very happy to finally have my own copy. I want to 'grow up' to be Diana Trent, and find my Tom Ballard, too !

5 out of 5 stars Season 2 even better.......2007-06-13

Season 2 is better than season one...now lets have 3 through 5, which are already out in the English PAL version!

5 out of 5 stars Return to Bayview!.......2007-06-02

"Waiting for God" is the ultimate BBC comedy on aging. Tom Ballard(Graham Crowden) and Diana Trent (Stephanie Cole) wreak havoc in and around the Bayview Retirement Community, much to the chagrin of Harvey Baines (Daniel Hill) who runs the place and the confusion of Jane Edwards (Janine Duvitski). Please take note: the series has a definite beginning, middle, and end. Most of the episodes do stand alone - however, I would like to suggest seeing them in order. IF YOU HAVEN"T SEEN THE FIRST SERIES/SEASON, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER THAT BEFORE WATCHING THESE! Waiting for God - Season 1

For those who already know Tom & Diana, there is no better treat than a return trip to the Bayview Retirement Community "for the almost dead." The second series should include ten episodes of the battle for respect as waged by Tom and Diana. Some of the hijinx in store from the second season discs include the introduction of Daisy for two episodes ("just what I need - a real life Major Barbara banging about the place") who increases a rift between Tom & Diana; Tom's policy of telling ONLY the WHOLE truth; and the hilarious hip operation which conflicts with Sarah's wedding. However, there are three must-have episodes: "Glamourous Grannies" in which Diana bets Tom she can be nice to everyone for a week; "Young People" which involves Harvey's latest scheme to be rid of Diana on the grounds of morality; and finally, "The Boring Son," in which Tom's son Geoffrey (Andrew Tourell) leaves his wife and moves in with Tom driving everyone nuts in the process.

The British have a wonderfully understated way of presenting the trials and hassles of aging. This series is the best to come over from England, and let's hope A&E/BBC continue to release the show!

5 out of 5 stars Diana and Tom Wreak More Havoc.......2007-04-14

This is the Second Series (they have series in the UK not seasons)of the great Waiting for God. Based on the 300 minute running time, there are 11 episodes in this series.

Funerals - Tom and Diana are tired of all the boring funerals and decide that they should have a better send off.

Tom Dates - Since Diana only wants to be friends, Tom decides to date the new resident.

New Girl in Town - Tom's romance continues until Diana decides she doesn't like the competition.

Shoplifting - Diana and Tom catch one of the new resident's shoplifting but when they try to cover for her, Diana is accused of shoplifting.

Diana's Niece - Diana's niece comes to a visit and announces her wedding. But Diana sees through his polished veneer.

Sarah's Wedding - Diana's niece's wedding is pending and Diana is in the hospital. But nothing will stop Diana from the nuptuals.

Harvey's Plan - Harvey has a plan to cut costs and make more money for him.

Geoffery Moves In - Geoffrey leaves his wife and moves in with Dad.

The Vicar - It's another funeral but the Vicar has a nervous break down during the funeral.

Unruly Kids - Geoffrey goes after his wife and leaves the kids to watched by Tom and Diana.

The Job - Diana decides to get a job.

Stephanie Cole and Graham Crowden shine as the two oldsters. Lets hope that they continue to release more. This makes 18 of the 47 episodes.

Mel Brooks's 1981, three-part comedy--set in the Stone Age, the Roman Empire, and the French Revolution--is pure guilty pleasure. Narrated by Orson Welles and featuring a lot of famous faces in guest appearances (beyond the official cast), the film opens well with Sid Caesar playing a caveman, then moves along to the unlikely but somehow hilarious juxtaposition of Caesar's soldiers (the other Caesar, not Sid) with pot humor, and ends on a dumb-funny note in the French bloodbath. This is a take-it-or-leave-it movie, and it works best if you're in a take-it-or-leave-it mood. --Tom Keogh

Description

Mel Brooks' uproarious version of history proves nothing is sacred as he takes us on a laugh-filled look at what really happened throughout time. His delirious romp features everything from a wild send-up of "2001" to the real stories behind the Roman Empire (Brooks portrays a stand-up philosopher at Caesar's Palace), the French Revolution (Brooks reigns as King Louis XVI) and the Spanish Inquisition (a splashy song-and-dance number with monks and swimming nuns.) It's Mel and company at their hilarious best.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not one of Mel Brook's best but still funny and entertaining........2007-06-08

An anthology of three generations through time from the dawn of man, to the time of Moses (Mel Brooks) to the Roman empire with the story of Julia Caesar (Dom DeLuise) and Christ (John Hurt) to the Spanish Inquisition and finally the French Revolution with King Louis XVI (Mel Brooks).

Highly entertaining and funny parody of history and the bible that has some of the charm of Mel Brooks but it's not as good as his "Young Frankenstein", "Blazing Saddles", "Spaceballs", "The Producers" or even "Robin Hood: Men In Tights". There is a good supporting cast such as Madeline Khan, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Gregory Hines, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman and narrated by Orson Welles with Mel Brooks playing multiple roles, the real showstopper of the movie is the funny musical number called "The Spanish Inquisition".

The DVD has excellent picture and sound with one extra that is a trailer, still it's a must have if you like Mel Brooks.

4 out of 5 stars Mel Brooks at his best!.......2007-05-27

I recently bought this film remembering the funny moments such as "run with mucus" and "ping pong" also "the Inquisition" and especally the "roman red" scene oh this was hilarious in its day. but alas, as we get older this just doesn't seem as funny as it used to. however, if you haven't seen this then you might want to have a needle and thread near you while watching it in case you split your sides because this is comedy at its old days best! from the dawn of man, through the roman empire, and even into space! this fantasy/comedy will delight all those age 17+ perhaps even a little younger as this might seem quite a bit more tame by todays standards. there are a few comments/scenes in this I really wouldn't want kids to hear/see other then that its a really funny film.
lost a star because some of the jokes may seem a bit dated. 4 stars
mel brooks should have made a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Still as funny as it was 20-something years ago.......2007-05-14

Mel Brooks has been one of the greats in comedy for decades--if you're looking for pure comic entertainment, don't miss this film! I only wish he had actually made [might make?] a "History of the World, Part II."

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but I probably wouldn't watch it twice.......2007-05-10

I bought this not long ago. I thought it would be one of those comical movies I could watch over and over when nothing good was on TV. It was amusing, but, I couldn't sit down and watch it again. It's one of those "Napoleon Dynamite" movies, you either love it or hate it.

Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't fly), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton

Description

An outrageous odyssey of fun, fantasy, and adventure unfolds in the hilarious hit film HERCULES, Disney's 35th animated triumph "brimming with comic surprise!" (Entertainment Weekly) Taken from the gods as a newborn, adopted on earth, Hercules becomes an awkward teenage pillar of strength. Trying to fit in, he discovers his dad is Zeus and home is Mount Olympus -- if he can move from "zero" to true hero! Hercules teams with babyhood pal Pegasus, the flying stallion, and Phil -- a feisty personal trainer -- for the mission. But it's no easy task as he must match wits with Grecian beauty Meg and a comical hothead named Hades. With the help of Pain and Panic, Hades plans to rule the Universe with only Hercules standing in his way! With a bold animation style, colossal voice cast, and spectacular music, HERCULES is unmatched in strength -- delivering something for everyone with "pinwheeling, knockabout fun!"

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Film.......2007-06-12

I saw this in my class while studying about Ancient Greece. I found it interesting to see everyone we learned about: the Muses, Zeus, Hera, Narciuss Heidis, the Gorgon Sisters, and of course, Hercules! I like how he calls Megara "Megan," when she said her 'friends' call her "Meg." This movies pretty good and will be great to watch if you'll ever have a Greek party!

3 out of 5 stars Slow moving.......2007-05-13

This is a good movie, BUT it doesn't have the story line and action to keep a 3-year-old interested. It's very slow moving in parts and has lots of dark scenes with not much color. It also occasional breaks away to parts that have music but very few graphics and that causes a lost interest from the kids.

5 out of 5 stars Disney Goofed!.......2007-01-23

I can't tell the number of hours my daughter and I sat in our big chair with a big bowl of pop-corn watching and rewatching this movie. She always loved it at five and, now at twelve, she still does.

Some people pick this movie apart as if it is supposed to be somehow "accurate" to the mythology. Sheesh! It's a disney film. Just enjoy the beautiful colors, more than tolerable story line, exceptional music and campy laughs. I did rewatching it for the first time on dvd.

One final point: Disney goofed in that they being one of the most left-wing liberal organizations out there mistakenly presented the Gospel to the world in cartoon allegory.

Think about it: The only Son of the Most High becomes human, and dwells among men, "discovers" himself, all the while perfoming a myriad miraculous feats. How does he become a "True Hero"? By sacrificing himself for the one that he loves...His bride.

Alright, it's a bit of a stretch and surely unintentional, but it still works. It's a beautiful thing!

4 out of 5 stars Disney rewrites Greek Mythology.......2006-11-03

What a shock, Disney changed a story when they adapted it to an animated feature. Hercules is representative of the whole Disney canon in this aspect. This has been the norm for Disney going back to Snow White so I think complaints don't hold much water, especially if someone is willing to accept previous changes made in other Disney films.

As for Disney's Hercules, it's a fun film. This was a nice break for Disney as they had been putting out some heavier material for a LONG time. Aladdin was fairly light-hearted but Lion King, Pocahontas, and especially Hunchback of Notre Dame had all been harder edged. Hercules is a comedy and needs to be looked at as such.

The voicework and songs are all pretty good here. I do like the gospel approach on the music and think it works quite well. Menken, as usual, does a fantastic job with the music and Zippel does well with the lyrics. Granted, he's no Howard Ashman but no one is.

I wouldn't call Hercules one of Disney's best, but it is a good, entertaining film that fulfills its mission. Don't expect to get a lesson in Greek mythology. I do agree with others who encourage viewers to read the mythology, but that doesn't invalidate Disney's film. It's clear that they were merely inspired by the story of Hercules and went from there. I think it's a good thing that they don't feel constrained to follow the stories to a tee; a flat adaptation would not be this entertaining.

As for the DVD, it's far from spectacular. The film is not in anamorphic widescreen and the quality of the "Making if" Featurette is horrible. It looks like someone taped it on VHS and then dumped it on to DVD. The film looks good and the sound is good. This is a fairly barebones release and is one of the most poorly treated of all Disney animated films. It seems to be another that Disney has decided to forget or neglect. What a shame.

5 out of 5 stars Disney does its magic!.......2006-09-22

Another Disney classic just like Pocahondas, Shrek, Snow white, Alandin and Lion King. These are cartoon figures and films that are never forgoten.

Bestowing Jim Carrey with godlike powers is a ripe recipe for comedy, and Bruce Almighty delivers the laughs that Carrey's mainstream fans prefer. The high-concept premise finds Carrey playing Bruce Nolan, a frustrated Buffalo TV reporter, stuck doing puff-pieces while a lesser colleague (the hilarious Steven Carell) gets the anchor job he covets. Bruce demands an explanation from God, who pays him a visit (in the serene form of Morgan Freeman) and lets Bruce take over while he takes a brief vacation. What does a petty, angry guy do when he's God? That's where Carrey has a field day, reuniting with his Ace Ventura and Liar, Liar director, Tom Shadyac, while Jennifer Aniston gamely keeps pace as Bruce's put-upon fiancée. Carrey's actually funnier before he becomes Him, and the movie delivers a sappy, safely diluted notion of faith that lacks the sincerity of the 1977 hit Oh, God! Still, we can be thankful that Carrey took the high road and left Little Nicky to Adam Sandler. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-06-18

As a pastor, I had some misgivings before I saw this film. Now, I wish I had seen it long before. It is delightful, hilarious and not at all blasphemous. It is a comedy that actually has some redeeming theological value.

The story is of a self absorbed news reporter. When things don't go as he wished, he falls into a theological temper tantrum and calls God out for the injustice he perceives to have been done. God answers the call and teaches the self absorbed idiot a lesson by granting him divine power over a limited area of New York.

At first this seems like a lot of fun but it soon becomes apparent that as he gets what he wants, he loses that which he most needs...the love of his long suffering girlfriend.

I would never call this a teaching tool but it does have a point and that point is amusingly put. It's a great job.

3 out of 5 stars No Cohesion/Too Manic.......2007-05-19

Jim Carrey's energy level is unbelievable considering he ain't that young anymore. However in 'Bruce Almighty' he plays an unsympathetic character who did not deserve God's undivided attention. So the premise of the movie stinks from the get go. The movie was also deleted to death which tells me the studio destroyed any cohesion it may otherwise have had. These 'God' movies are nearly impossible to pull off anyhow unless they're being done from a non-secular perspective. You know what I'm talkin about if you've been around for a while or can remember the backlash that 'Little Nickie' caused. The supporting cast is outstanding for this movie but they can't save it from a wishy washy, cliched script. Catherine Bell is pretty much missing in action and or regulated to stick figure status. What a waste ! The funniest scene in the movie was deleted. It involved Carrey free-falling onto Big Foot and then they both miraculously survive. I don't know about you but that was a side-splitting moment for me ! Jim Carrey is funny but here he has little restraints put on him so it's just too much Carrey. If I could redo the movie from scratch I'd one 'Attempt to get religion out of it' , two 'reduce Jim Carrey's exposure-make him more sympathetic', three 'Increase Catherine Bell's exposure'. We're talkin about a much different movie now. Jennifer Aniston is good. I'd keep her. Morgan Freeman is excellent as God but I would have made him a bum that a way more sympathetic Carrey befriends to beneficial effect. I could go on and on about the movie that could have been and I will: Every time I watch this one !

5 out of 5 stars "I am Bruce Almighty! My will be done!".......2007-05-07

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

TITLE: Bruce Almighty

PREMIERED IN: 2003

RATED: PG-13

RUNNING TIME: 102 Minutes

STARRING: Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carrel

PLOT: A TV news reporter named Bruce (Carrey) is tired of having a "mediocre life" and blames all of his problems on God. Needless to say, he suddenly meets God (Freeman) and is given Godlike powers. While Bruce starts to enjoy his newfound glory, his girlfriend Grace (Aniston) is worsening because he is still the same person that he has been: egotistical. 9/10

CHARACTERS/PERFORMANCES: Carrey and Aniston are typically brilliant as the troubled couple. Carrel, I believe, steals the show as the antagonist that every news reporter would love to hate. Freeman was absolutely stunning as the humanlike God. He made me feel good about being a Protestant. But let's not forget all the memorable moments of this film. Bruce secretly tormenting new anchorman Evan (Carrel) is memorably hilarious. I don't know how Carrel was able to pull it off. Bruce breaking down on the Maid of the Mist was almost gave me a heart attack! The way he yelled out the word "eroding" just made me so happy with laughter. 9/10

THE SCRIPT/DIALOGUE: The script was top-notch, with every scene elaborated very nicely. 10/10

DIRECTOR: Tom Shadyac proves that he is a good Christian by getting the point across perfectly. There is no hint of biased storytelling anywhere; it just tells about God and the miracles that we control. Shadyac makes the tension throughout the movie flawless as Bruce Nolan starts to tear away the entire Earth whenever he works his magic. He also makes sure that the comedy is never over-the-top, although the drama can be a bit melodramatic at a few points in the movie. All in all, Shadyac does a brilliant job here. 9/10

PACING: It's perfectly paced. Nuff said. 9/10

CINEMATOGRAPHY: It's all good. There are no flaws in lighting or coloring whatsoever. 9/10

SETS AND COSTUMES: It's all modern, so there's nothing special about it. God's suit, however, might symbolize either hope or comfort. 10/10

MUSIC: It sounds very nice, although it isn't anything special. The songs (by Mick Jagger, Joan Osbourne, and Fatboy Slim) seem to fit perfectly for this movie. 8/10

VISUAL EFFECTS: All the CGI effects look realistic and beautiful. The "close-up" of the moon might be the only exception, though. 10/10

DVD SPECIAL FEATURES: The deleted scenes and extra outtakes had me in stitches (not literally)! 9/10

CONCLUSION: This isn't your typical feel-good comedy, but it does have countless moments that will make you cheer. This is one of the finest comedies that I have seen.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2/10 A-

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY BUT TRUE.......2007-05-06

THIS MOVIE IS FUNNY BUT THE FACTS IN THIS MOVIE ARE VERY TRUE. IT SHOWS THAT WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. THEYRE ALOT OF CRUEL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD BUT BRUCE WAS NOT ONE OF THEM. HE WAS CARING, HARD WORKING, LOVED HIS GIRLFRIEND, AND TRIED HELPING A HOMELESS MAN. BUT NO MATTER WHAT BRUCE DID IT ALWAYS BACKFIRED ON HIM. HE IN RETURN GOT MAD AT GOD AND CURSED HIM. HE THEN KEPT GETTING BEEPED ON HIS PAGER BY A WEIRD #. HE CALLED IT AND TO MAKE LONG STORY SHORT HE MET GOD. ALL IN ALL THIS MOVIE PROVES A POINT. ONLY GOD CAN KNOW WHATS RIGHT OR WRONG FOR YOU. AND NOBODY CAN OVER POWER GOD. JUST BUY THIS MOVIE YOULL WATCH IT MORE THAN ONCE TRUST ME.

4 out of 5 stars Jim Carrey is ALMIGHTY funny.......2007-05-03

Here is how I knew the movie was funny-- I went in thinking it would be funny; expecting it to be funny; hoping it would be funny and WANTING it to be funny. Turns out-- it WAS funny.

Jim Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan a human interest TV Reporter in Buffalo, NY at a crossroads. In a bit of life parallel maybe (wanting to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor while being wildly hilarious??), Nolan's high ratings and beautiful girlfriend Grace (well played by Jennifer Aniston), are not enough as feels he is due something bigger & better as he awaits a possible promotion to station anchor.

In a wildly funny, angry & poignant moment (we all have been there) Carrey's Nolan angrily lashes out at God -- and the Almighty (HILARIOUSLY portrayed by the ever-suave Morgan Freeman) responds, endowing Bruce with all of His divine powers. And from there, the movie just takes off with Carrey given free-license to be a comedically-selfish almighty.

Shenanigans at the station, romantic-goofing around with Grace & potty-training the dog, all lend to another fine outing from director Tom Shadyac who let Carrey run amok in Ace Ventura as well as Liar, Liar. Its a winner, and at only 1 hr 40 mins, leaves you wanting a bit more, which in this case, is a good thing.

Parents seeking kid-friendly, Christian entertainment can be comfortable letting their kids watch Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, which turns the characters from the biblical story of Jonah into a bunch of talking cucumbers, asparagus, peas, and other vegetables. When God instructs the prophet Jonah to go to the wicked city of Ninevah to spread His word, Jonah balks and tries to flee by ship--only to end up in the belly of a whale. When he finally consents to go to Ninevah, things don't turn out quite the way he expects. The VeggieTales team uses computer animation and upbeat musical numbers to express Christian themes, but they do so without being painfully didactic. The animation (and the humor) isn't as sophisticated as that in Toy Story or Shrek, and kids may find some elements of the story confusing, but this may provide an opportunity for parents and kids to discuss values. --Bret Fetzer

I loved it and so did my son. I bought this when he was around 6 months old and now that he is 19 months old he loves it even more then he did then. The characters are lively and colorful enough to keep even the young ones entertained and the songs are great he dances everytime I put it on. He gets excited when he sees the DVD. Plus it show your young one about the bible and how to be nice and fair and caring for others...def, a must have even for the unreligious as the music and characters are loved by all!

Kevin Smith is a conundrum of a filmmaker: he's a writer with brilliant, clever ideas who can't set up a simple shot to save his life. It was fine back when Smith was making low-budget films like Clerks and Chasing Amy, both of which had an amiable, grungy feel to them, but now that he's a rising director who's attracting top talent and tackling bigger themes, it might behoove him to polish his filmmaking. That's the main problem with Dogma--it's an ambitious, funny, aggressively intelligent film about modern-day religion, but while Smith's writing has matured significantly (anyone who thinks he's not topnotch should take a look at Chasing Amy), his direction hasn't. It's too bad, because Dogma is ripe for near-classic status in its theological satire, which is hardly as blasphemous as the protests that greeted the movie would lead you to believe.

Two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) have discovered a loophole that would allow them back into heaven; problem is, they'd destroy civilization in the process by proving God fallible. It's up to Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), a lapsed Catholic who works in an abortion clinic, to save the day, with some help from two so-called prophets (Smith and Jason Mewes, as their perennial characters Jay and Silent Bob), the heretofore unknown 13th apostle (Chris Rock), and a sexy, heavenly muse (the sublime Salma Hayek, who almost single-handedly steals the film). In some ways Dogma is a shaggy dog of a road movie--which hits a comic peak when Affleck and Fiorentino banter drunkenly on a train to New Jersey, not realizing they're mortal enemies--and segues into a comedy-action flick as the vengeful angels (who have a taste for blood) try to make their way into heaven. Smith's cast is exceptional--with Fiorentino lending a sardonic gravity to the proceedings, and Jason Lee smirking evilly as the horned devil Azrael--and the film shuffles good-naturedly to its climax (featuring Alanis Morissette as a beatifically silent God), but it just looks so unrelentingly... subpar. Credit Smith with being a daring writer but a less-than-stellar director. --Mark Englehart

    5 out of 5 stars Theologically Sound!.......2007-07-01

I love thought provoking comedies. You certainly do not have to be Catholic (in any form..lapsed, practicing, whatever) to get the most out of this movie but it does help. The film abounds with intelligent, provocative dialogue spoken by excellent actors. And it's hysterical!
It takes a skilled director/writer to construct a movie that can make you laugh AND think.
A previous reviewer suggested that the characters are all annoying. I have to disagree. The characters are well rounded. They are all fleshed out by tremendous actors. The performances are believable.
It has also been suggested that this film is irreverent. Well, possibly, but a little irreverence is what makes most smart comedies fly.
Have fun with this movie. Watch and listen to it's keen perception of religion and faith. But most of all enjoy the brilliant comedy, first class performances and captivating plot.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing Disappointment...Must be Kevin Smith.......2007-05-31

Dogma is not a bad movie, but it's not a good one. It began with some sharp satire, got preachy in the middle (all the arrogant religions only see a little bit of the truth but the humble and wise Kevin Smith sees the whole picture - the standard elephant and the blind men fallacy) and ended like most of Smith's efforts...unevenly. If Kevin Smith was a chess player he would have one of the world's best opening games, a slightly below average middle game and a horrid end game. Oh, and if you are going to make a religious satire, please don't include 3 extended diatribes expounding `correct' pluralistic religious perspective. Satire should preach subversively not didactically.

    5 out of 5 stars Dogma Delivers.......2007-05-19

This won't fly with overly sensitive religious people. Excellent humor, this movie is one you will want to share with friends and watch again and again.

    4 out of 5 stars hmmm.......2007-03-17

This movie has entertainment value. I say this because if taken seriously, it can be very offensive to many Christians. Another problem I have found is that people who have seen (and loved) this movie tend to start believing and preaching the religious ideas from the movie as thoughts of their own. These people I've noticed don't even seem to realize they are only spewing the filmmakers ideas. The movie, if watched as a movie and nothing else is quite entertaining.

It's strange that a British comedy series in the tradition of Monty Python and Mr. Bean would sit fifteen years before being released on DVD. However, Waiting for God's humor has less slapstick mixed in with its dark, dry wit, making its style uniquely relevant to facing old age and death. The first seven episodes are collected on this disc: Welcome to Bayview, A Trip to Brighton, Cheering Up Tom, The Christening, Fraulein Mueller, The Psychiatrist, and The Helicopter. In each, elderly citizen Tom Ballard (Graham Crowden) and his grumpy spinster friend, Diana Trent (Stephanie Cole) overcome boredom and malaise within Bayview Retirement Village, having some adventures outside its confines (like when they drive a Porsche to Brighton in "A Trip to Brighton"), but mostly relying on conversation to entertain themselves. Waiting for God exemplifies smart writing paired with solid acting, since there is little dramatic action to distract from its premise. As a result, Tom and Diana's characters have well-rendered personalities, making their conversations pleasantly predictable. Tom always fantasizes, believing he can enact change, like when he stages a hunger strike against Bayview's food in "Welcome to Bayview." Diana is the quintessential pessimist, her nose always buried in a novel or in a game of solitaire to pass time until death. She's bitter towards people who "revere everything ancient except themselves." Diana and Tom bond over broken families and a love of sarcasm, and their unlikely friendship is both realistic and entertaining. Plots against their refusal to accept senior citizen status grow heated, as in "The Psychiatrist," when Harvey, Bayview's manager, aims to prove Tom and Diana mentally incompetent in order to confiscate their rights. In "The Helicopter," Tom and Diana sneak a ride in a helicopter, causing panic and chaos amongst their caretakers. Instead of poking fun at the elderly, as does the other British comedy about an old couple, Keeping Up Appearances, Waiting for God satirically highlights the absurd notion that our elders are incapable of living intelligently. --Trinie Dalton

    Description

At the Bayview Retirement Village the elderly are expected to grow old gracefully, enjoying their final years in peace, quiet and comfort... but not if Tom (Graham Crowden) and Diana (Stephanie Cole) have anything to do with it! Meet two elderly eccentrics who refuse to put up with the appalling food and condescending staff, in the hilariously cynical BAFTA-nominated comedy that won Stephanie Cole a British Comedy Award in 1992.

5 out of 5 stars Tom and Diana are Magical.......2007-06-28

I was so happy to receive this DVD as I miss seeing Tom and Diana on my local PBS channel. The clarity of the DVD was excellent, much better than the TV version. The wit is typically British and wonderful. Though I have seen all the episodes, I never tire of watching them again. I'm hoping to be just like Diana when I retire; just as outspoken and unflappable! A wonderful escape from the horrible choices on TV.

5 out of 5 stars I Want To Be Diana When I Grow Up.......2007-06-07

...and I'm working on it! I too will probably end up being the terror of some as-yet-unsuspecting "facility". Meanwhile, at 75, I'm working a job and a half, supporting myself and three cats, and thoroughly enjoying life and my friends.

This series does a wonderful job of pointing out that those of us who are "senior citizens" (I only use the term about myself when I want the discounts) are perfectly capable of living as useful citizens who can contribute their knowledge and experiences, have one whole hell of a lot of fun, and not have to be "managed".

Are Tom and Diana exaggerated? Probably. But they are great characters, perfectly cast. While enduring the physical infirmaties of age, they scheme relentlessly to outwit their relatives and the Bayview administration, giving us a hilarious and highly unorthodox view of aging. You will laugh yourself sore at their conversations and their adventures. You will also feel their deep concern for each other and their fellow residents, usually masked by outrageous actions and speech.

Some of the funniest moments occur when Diana "borrows" her niece's Porsche, Diana and Tom disrupt a boring christening, put on a great "senile" act for a visiting psychiatrist, and make hash out of the aspirations of a local politician. Never underestimate the power of an old lady hanging out of a helicopter doing aerial photography.

Why did it take so long for this series to be issued on DVD? Now that it has, let's hope we eventually have all of it available. Season 2, here I come! My trusty VISA card trembles in terror every time a bunch of these great British comedies makes it to DVDs.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2007-06-04

Excellent British comedy. Love the Diana and Tom characters. 5 stars all the way.

    Description

Comic genius Jim Carrey stars with Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman in the funniest, most outrageously entertaining comedy hit of the year that critics are applauding as "a laugh a minute" (Jim Ferguson, FOX-TV). Bruce Nolan (Carrey) is a discontented TV reporter who believes the entire universe is stacked against him. In a life-altering encounter, the Big Guy Upstairs (Freeman) endows Bruce with all of His divine powers and challenges Bruce to take on the big job to see if he can do it any better. Bruce Almighty is the wildly funny comedy featuring "Jim Carrey at his best!" (Leonard Maltin, Hot Ticket)

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie, and Decent HD Presentation........2007-06-23

I've always loved this movie i thought it was heartfelt and funny, and jim carrey was great in it. The HD presentation was good enough for me although not great, still a huge step up from the dvd. It has great colors and sense of depth to the image and i for one am really glad they put this movie out in HD. well to sum it up great movie good HD disc pick it up you will not regret it.

3 out of 5 stars I can do anything better than you........2007-06-04

    No you can't.
Yep Bruce is really down on his luck, and we are reminded of that old saying,"never hit a man when he is down, Kick him it is easer."
After assessing the situation he comes to the conclusion that his situation is the direct results of gross negligence on the part of his maker. He makes the monumental decision to express his thought. Naturally in the tradition of the "Oh God" movies, only this time Morgan Freeman is god, Bruce is challenged to see if he could do any better. This time instead of, "Death takes a Holiday" (1934), God takes his. Now that Bruce has a chance to be in charge. What changes will we see? Was Bruce's assessment of the situation correct or a tad jaded from the situation?

Of course this is a formula movie with the outcome determined before we start. Jim Carrey relies on his Carrey faces to carry the movie. These facial expressions were cute in "Once Bitten" (1985) but get a little long in the tooth by now. Jennifer Aniston of "Office Space" (1999) fame does an excellent supporting role.
