Although the somewhat formal 1950's setting of this light comedy doesn't entirely suit Brigitte Bardot's talents, she manages to come out well. Mostly for her nice dancing scenes, clearly showing Bardot is at her best when performing her own relaxed self.

'Cette sacrée gamine' also shows us Brigitte Bardot on the eve of her big breakthrough. Not being strong enough yet to dictate the pace of this movie, she's nevertheless able to leave her mark. If you are prepared to slow yourself down to the speed of 1950's life, 'naughty girl' makes an enjoyable watch.

Beware! This edition is dubbed into English!.......2003-01-21

Do not buy this 2 pack if you want the original French edition. This one is dubbed into English and was very disappointing for me to watch. The original French edition is supposedly coming out in March. So much of the flavor of this movie is lost with the dubbing.

Bardot is adorable; the film's a dud........2002-12-20

Bridget Bardot stars in this slight, ineffective would-be slapstick comedy, co-directed by Roger Vadim. The plot is slapdash, and while Bardot is a total babe, we don't really get much of a chance to take in her charms... she has a kooky, carefree dance scene, and wears some weird outfits during a dream sequence, but really none of it is worth sitting through the actual film.

Entertaining and fast paced comedy.......2002-08-10

I was finally able to get a reasonably clear version of this movie to properly evaluate it. You may not be so lucky.

This movie turns out to be very entertaining and amusing. The comedy is part wit and part slapstick. The entire cast is quite good. Bardot is simply adorable as the teenage daughter of a nightclub owner. She may look like a goddess but Bardot is very earthly in her ways. She is not so much naughty in this picture as she is accident prone and inept at virtually anything she attempts. Her sensuality is quite apparent but still developing at this early stage of her career.

I don't believe there is a digitally restored version of this movie. One of the production companies should do it as done with other Bardot movies. This movie then can really be enjoyed.

How could anyone not love Bardot ..........2001-02-25

The storyline is simple, Brigette Bardot is a school girl who imagines that her father has an exciting other life which he is keeping from her. Little does she know that he owns a nightclub in Paris and is in trouble with the law. When he has to flee town, her father entrusts her to a nightclub singer, whose life turns topsy turvy when she goes to stay with him. The story is not the focus of the film, but rather Bardot's innocence and sensuality, the way she flaunts it throughout the film, one of the few actresses who has that child/woman duality about them. Of course, Brigette Bardot is a goddess, and if you are a fan, you should not miss this movie, it doesn't require much thought but is thoroughly enjoyable ...

I saw it last year and apart from a few bumpy reel changes it is very clean and not scratched too much. Lucky us! I know this is not the definitive version purists rave about (that is the 1934 version) but MGM in 1952 was about as technically lush and state of the art perfect as one could want for any musical. In fact MW is is as colorful and as visually lavish as MY FAIR LADY or ON A CLEAR DAY or HALF A SIXPENCE or even the indoor scenes in TITANIC to any modern audience. The Gen x-ers who saw this version were absolutely in awe of how spectacular this REAL Technicolor version is. Lana is amazingly beautiful and Fernando is his virile Latin he man best. The Waltz in the last reel is exquisite. The only irritating bit is the same 'mid-west-Yanks-in-Europe' antics that annoy in LOVELY TO LOOK AT made the same year. However, who really cares when THE MERRY WIDOW is visually astonishing and musically delicious. What a year it was at MGM in 1952! And this much guarded and treasured proper Hollywood 3 strip Technicolor print is staying here, folks! If you wanna see it you have to come visit."

One of MGM'S finest Musicals.......2006-12-17

MGM released this film in 1952, I had just turned 13, and other than the Merry Widow Waltz, had no knowledge of the Operetta, but I was very familiar with the Beautiful Lana Turner, so I went to see the film, and what a feast for the eye and ear it was, Ms. Turner never looked lovlier, Lamas, who I had never heard of before, was dashing, handsome, and did justice to his part in the film, but make no mistake, this is a big budget LANA TURNER MOVIE, with the most beautiful costumes (tastful as well, many times movie costumes are overdone, not here) MGM and it's vast resources could make, as were the sets, to borrow a line from the film "this room is like a birthday cake" indeed, the palace is fairytale gorgeous, if you are familiar with the Operetta, and don't take well to adaptations, this film is not for you, it closely follows the main story line, but doesn't have any of the sub plots found in the original, but viewed on it's own merits, this is a stunning fantasy that will have you enchanted for hours, if not days after viewing this DVD, HOWEVER, I rated the movie 5 stars because it deserves every one of them and more, it is so good it even overcomes the dreadful DVD, which is nothing more than a direct copy of an off the shelf vhs tape, that could be purchased at any vidio store a while back, does anybody still make or sell prerecorded vhs tapes today?, it is my sincerest hope that some day (soon please) the MGM copyright holder (Sony, you listening) will go to the film, digitize it, and put out the stunning DVD, it deserves, not this really crappy copy of a vhs tape

A Beautiful Box for the Beautiful Brigitte.......2006-06-17

Besides her great beauty, Brigitte Bardot is mostly known for her work & relationship with director Jean Luc Godard- and that might set some up for a dissapointment with this set. None of the films featured here approach "Contempt" or even her role in Roger Vadim's "And God Created Woman", these are basically cute French romantic comedies that are light, fluffy and full of sexual suggestion. For fans of the actress and fun films from the 60's, you'd really enjoy this set. I sat down to watch them without expectations (beyond having fun) and I wasn't dissapointed. It's sort of like seeing a lesser Marilyn Monroe film- it'll never be as satisfying as "Some Like It Hot", but it's still fun. Not to mention, Brigitte's carefree beauty and charm makes each of these very watchable.

The actually box set is a little flimsy, but will hold up on your shelf just fine if you take care of it. It's a very pretty blue box covered in stars with pin-ups of Ms. Bardot taken from the films. Highly recommended for fans of Brigitte (obviously!) silly romantic comedies, French films from the 1960's and collectors of classic and off-beat DVD sets. Don't go in expecting anything more than a good time, and you'll be sure to have one.

I will not reveiw the movie itself because everybody has different taste. If you are reading this review you probably like the movie anyway and know what it is about.

The DVD version of this release would be for fans looking to expand thier DVD collection or those who do not have these titles on VHS or laserdisk. If you have it on another format these DVD releases don't have much to entice you.

But it must be remembered that Janette McDonald started off her illustrious MGM career as Ramon Novarro's leading lady in "The Cat and the Fiddle" At the time of release, because it was a very expensive production the film actually lost money at the box office but time has quite rightly redeemed it and it's a most enjoyable film full of great music,lavish sets, both leads singing with Ramon's voice once again wonderful. Ramon Novarro was still a highly successful MGM star at this time (1934) He had just completed the successful "The Barbarian" (a great film which should be on video!!) with the lovely Myrna Loy. It is such a shame that in his last MGM years often he was put into films that weren't suited to his great talents. In "Fiddle' he looks absolutely great and holds his own against the power house McDonald. There is alot of comedy in his role and Ramon as always proves himself to be an excellent comedy actor. The film has the usual MGM polish about it, has a superb supporting cast and has a storyline which in some ways was amazingly daring for 1934 as it is obvious that the two leads in the story are actually living together out of wedlock in the second half of the film!! This from the great MGM? A place full of happy endings and family values!! I think you will enjoy this film and if you admire Ramon Novarro as much as I do. It is a wonderful couple of hours of entertainment to see him in one of his last great roles before he left MGM. Enjoy!"
