The subversive, super-hip television show Buffy, the Vampire Slayer has changed the bloodsucking genre forever. Hilariously campy and self-aware, the show cleverly sends up every exhausted convention the vampire genre has to offer. It was only a matter of time before someone tried translating the same tone to the big screen (the Buffy film failed miserably before becoming a show). As written by Matthew Bright (Freeway) and directed by Richard Elfman (Forbidden Zone), the silly and seditious Modern Vampires tries a similar tongue-in-cheek approach, flipping the focus instead to the vampires. Sure, it's shameless, it's cheesy, but it's also much more entertaining than, say, the heavy-handed Blade. The filmmakers set the genre piece in Los Angeles, a city cynical and violent enough to allow vampires to roam without much notice. The Hollywood lifestyle has influenced these vampires, though, as they stage elaborate parties where nude humans are kept in cages and carted out for main courses ("Is he Italian? I was wanting Italian tonight!"), as well as feast on the likes of screenwriters, producers, and entertainment lawyers (talk about bloodsuckers). In terms of plot, not much is going on here. A very serious and driven Dr. Frederick Van Helsing (Rod Steiger) arrives in L.A., from Germany, in search of Dallas (Casper Van Dien of Starship Troopers), a vampire who turned his son 20 years ago. Needing a partner, Van Helsing puts out an ad and picks up a Crips gangster member named Time Bomb (Gabriel Casseus), creating perhaps the goofiest vampire-hunting tag team in film history. "Do you believe in vampires?" Van Helsing first asks his young partner. "As long as you're writing the checks, I'll take out anyone," he replies. Steiger is wonderfully over the top (think Donald Pleasance in any of the Halloween sequels), and Elfman fills his vampire cast with other notable charismatic character actors, including Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City), Natasha Gregson Wagner (humorous as a trailer-trash vamp), and Udo Kier. Straight to video doesn't get much better than this. --Dave McCoy

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-03-09

This movie is absolutely hilarious! It's fun the whole way through! I make all my friends watch it. It's just a lot of fun.

3 out of 5 stars Warhol-esque - - Not for the tasteful, but has some good comedy.......2006-10-22

The first half was hilarious, and then went downhill. It is sort of a vampire soap opera, with shezbot for action and plenty of totally tasteless humor that I hated, strangely interspersed with some droll humor, which I REALLY enjoyed. Tell you what. If you like bad horror, you may well enjoy this. I did. If you enjoyed playing VTMB or Bloodrayne (games) you may enjoy this flick. I laughed my tookus off for the first half or so. If you are hoping for a good serious vampire movie, forget it. But I enjoyed this more than most serious vampire movies. I recommend Sean of The Dead over this as a similar parody of the genre, but as a foray into "bad," this flick has its moments. Actually, playing VTMB is much better, and a more immersive experience of vampirism as a "life" style.

1 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?.......2006-10-15

What the heck were they thinking when they made this movie? Were they trying to make a horror movie, a comedy movie, or an action movie? I couldn't tell, because it failed in every single one of those categories, and more. Even worse was the casting...I mean, sweet, lovely Eldin from 'Murphy Brown' as Count Dracula? And Mr Wick from 'Drew Carey' as an evil vampire? And Kim Catrall as a...actually, I don't know what she was, or where her accent was supposed to be from. Every accent in this was laughably bad, as bad as the acting, if you could call it acting. And the plotline was so illogical...I mean, allegedly the Count wanted to kill off a vampire girl because her killing spree was drawing attention to the existence of the other vampires. But then, the other vampires went around biting and abducting and killing people whenever they went, so how were they any better?

This movie was awful. I think it was made simply for the sake of getting to see lots of people with their clothes off and women kissing one another. I don't usually have a problem with seeing either of those things in a movie, but in this instance I feel that there should have been more to the movie than just that...like a believable plot, for instance, or acting, or suspense, or something, anything, your average moviegoer would find interesting.

The worst thing about this movie (and boy was it hard, in a movie this bad, to find a thing I hated more than everything else) was that many of the vampires had tans. And not only did they have tans, but they had tan lines where they'd obviously been wearing swimsuits while tanning out in THE SUN. Five bucks worth of fake tan probably could have fixed that little glitch and hid the tan lines. But no one involved this movie was cluey enough to think of it. That, or they realised the movie was crud and just didn't care. I got the feeling everyone involved in this was just there to get their paycheck.

By the way, don't be fooled by the credit at the beginning of the movie that reads: 'music by Danny Elfman'. I think he does about one song in the whole movie, tops, and that was probably only because this movie was Richard Elfman's project (my guess is that they're related, and Danny did it as a favour, probably because he felt sorry for poor untalented Richard.)

My advice is to avoid this movie. There are better skinflicks than this that you could be watching.

If you want to see a GOOD, funny movie with the talented Natasha Lyonne kissing a girl in it, get hold of 'But I'm A Cheerleader'.

5 out of 5 stars I Love Films about Vampires.......2006-04-22

As a youngster I learn to be scared of as well as facinated by Vampires. Dracula was so cool, there have been really good films about Vampires. Then there are those who sort of makes fun or create a campy version, this one being one of those. I love seen Craig Ferguson in anything, but I really did enjoy his preformance in this film. He looks so handsome in his fangs, he is a gentle soul, even if he is a Vampire. Buy it..I think most Vampire fans will enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars Modern Vampires....This movie is just awful........2005-09-09

I think this movie was a complete waste of my time and money. The movie was so bad that, from now on, it will only collect dust on my shelf. I highly discourage anyone considering this movie. It is nearly a joke with the shallow acting, over-done sound effects and thin plot. Terrible...Terrible...Terrible.

Description

"I hate those no-goodniks, Moose and Squirrel!"

Boris Badenov's past is clouded in mystery, as befits one who insists on top billing as "The World's Greatest No-goodnick." Indeed, it's even doubtful if anyone has seen the real Boris for years and years; for he is such a master of disguise that most government agents are pretty much agreed that his regular appearance is merely his prop "villain's" outfit.

Natasha Fatale, feminine counterpart to Boris Badenov, is a former Miss Transylvania. Although most of her younger life remains a mystery, there is substantial evidence that Natasha is the only child of Axis Sally and Count Dracula. Although Boris has repeatedly asked for her hand, she has adamantly refused to part with it. Away from the set of "The Bullwinkle Show", Natasha raises tarantulas and is active in civic affairs, being national chairman of the Society To Restore The Real Meaning Of Halloween.

Wittily written and voiced, these timless classics are a fond salute to old-time melodrama and remain some of the funniest cartoons ever made. In all, there were 28 Rocky and Bullwinkle serials, from the 40 episode Jet Fuel Formula to the 4 episode Moosylvania Saved, 326 episodes in all. The three complete seasons available on DVD served up the first 13 serials, a total of 222 episodes. You can pick up one new 4 episode story on The Best of Rocky and Bullwinkle. This DVD contains three serials in 14 chapters, "Pottsylvania Creeper", "Moosylvania", and "Moosylvania Saved". Just 11 more serials (86 episodes) to go.

5 out of 5 stars Better then the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.......2006-08-23

The rocky and Bullwinkle movie which hit theaters 8 years later then this movie was a disgrace to Jay Ward. This movie however was a great movie based of those too spies Boris and Natasha. Except for a small part of them being turned to humans Rocky and Bullwinkle don't appear in this movie. However it is filled with action that the R&B movie does not have. Great for Rocky and Bullwinkle fans and people unfimilair with the old show!

1 out of 5 stars John Candy died for your sins when?.......2006-03-21

This turkey is part, I think, of the ongoing punishment of talents like Dave Thomas and Andrea Martin for DARING to be funny outside of Hollywood (at Second City Television), and, perhaps, for refusing to "go" Hollywood.

Any number of B-list pix have taken SCTV people and forced them to work from corporate scripts.

This movie is beyond moronic, and even columnist Jim Anchower of the Onion would need two flats of beer to sit through it. I acquired it on the street next to a dai pan dong in Hong Kong for five bucks HKD but it literally isn't worth about 75 cents US.

This America Online disk that calls itself a movie has a nearly unintelligible screen play.

News fa lash. What was hip in 1964 can be *au fait* in 2004, but you have to attack the sacred cows and the shibboleths of fat and aging baby boomers even as Rocky and Bullwinkle deconstructed our parent's Eisenhower America.

Come on. Fat and aging Baby Boomers are FUNNY when they get scared in Starbucks when a stranger speaks to them, and especially when they Support the Troops and in general laud traditional Values of which they've only heard rumours, in survey classes years ago, in junior college.

Hot off the presses. Natasha has to make an effort to look like zeee real Natasha: Borees has to make an effort to zound like zeee real Boris. I don't blame Sally and Dave. I think that they were so sick at heart after reading the script that they could not perform.

This just in. Irony can't be treated as product. You have to believe in something (start with peace and love) to be ironic about Amerikkka today, but the screen writers were clearly told that Borees and Natasha think America is great. This worked in Ivan Reitman's Stripes.

News fa-most assuredly-lash: Stripes was made when? 1981? Counsel rests and requests leave to go to the powder room to throw up.

5 out of 5 stars The Comic Pair From Rocky & Bullwinkle.......2005-02-12

This movie is filled with subtle comedy in the same tradition as the original animated version on the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show!
I laughed and laughed at the antics and comic situations this pair get into. If you ever saw the animated version you'll love this real life version as well! A very good movie when you want something different and lighthearted and filled with comedy so subtle that you better pay attention, which is easy to do as the movie draws you into it so easily. A great movie for collector's of real life versions of animated classics!

3 out of 5 stars SCTV Fans Only..........2004-10-15

Me, I got this because I am a Dave Thomas fan from SCTV. He didn't disappoint, doing what he could with the material. Thomas and Sally Kellerman also chose not to attempt straight impressions of their cartoon counterparts. Unfortunately, overall, if you are R & B fans you may wince all the way through. The movie goes Jay Ward only halfheartedly, and that was probably a mistake. Rather than take the wiser approaches of caricature all the way around, or having them transplanted from animation as was done in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle," Boris and Natasha are buffoons, but the framework they work within is all played straight. Even Fearless Leader is a competent and serious (as serious as this movie can be) character. There are a couple of good sight gags, and Thomas wrings some laughs out of situations and dialogue that might not deserve it otherwise. The movie peps up when it strays dangerously close to SCTV (John Candy's cameo, Boris and Natasha's disguises in fat suits as the Irish couple Mr. and Mrs. O'Beeth), and might have been better all the way through if they had jettisoned its Rocky and Bullwinkle parentage altogether and tried a new direction for the characters--perhaps using them as punning commentators on a real world full of humor if approached the right way. Worth 2 1/2 stars but not an option.

2 out of 5 stars Drivel.......2003-06-22

As a tribute to the ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS (1959-1961) and THE BULLWINKLE SHOW (1961-1964) television series, David Thomas and Sally Kellerman star respectively as BORIS AND NATASHA, the two inept East European spies appearing in the original cartoon animation as adversaries of Bullwinkle and the squirrel. (Yeah, ok, even "old time" TV wasn't necessarily scintillating.)

In B&N, Pottsylvania's despotic Fearless Leader (Christopher Neame) orders our two heroes to infiltrate America in order to track down a fugitive scientist, who's developed a microchip that can reverse time. Once in the U.S., Natasha is "discovered" by hair stylist Jose (Jose Eber), who makes Natasha a media star. Only Boris, troubled by his partner's loss of focus and dedication, keeps the assignment on track.

There are a few decent sight gags, e.g. Boris and Natasha in fat suit disguises and John Travolta in a fleeting cameo. For me, however, the best feature of the film is long-legged Sally Kellerman, who manages to be sexy in a ditzy sort of way. But otherwise, the storyline is drivel. Even a 5-minute scene that includes John Candy as retired Pottsylvania super agent Kallishak, who now has a shoe-shine stand in the Big Apple, adds nothing.

Only die-hard fans of the original small screen adventures may find this movie entertaining. Having said that, where are Dudley Do-Right and Snidely Whiplash when you need them? (Daniel Day-Lewis would make a great Whiplash!)
