The cult television show (in which a hapless space explorer and his robot pals are forced to watch and deliver a hilarious running commentary on bad movies) makes a successful transition to the big screen as Mike and the 'bots lay waste to the '50s sci-fi yarn This Island Earth (a painfully stiff would-be epic that's actually a cut above the usual MST3K fare). While ardent fans may be a little miffed that more advantage isn't taken of the expanded theatrical venue (aside from a tad more scatological humor than usual, the content here would fit in comfortably as a regular episode of the series), the nonstop, hyper-literate salvo of comedy riffs that run the gamut from references to Tommy Chong's backyard to Yes album covers more than make up for any conceptual complacency. Be prepared to laugh till it aches. --Andrew Wright

Book your return flight to the Satellite of Love and join Joel, Mike and the 'bots for another fearful foursome of flops in this collection of episodes from the Peabody Award-winning series Mystery Science Theater 3000. First up on Volume 11's menu of muck is Season Two's Ring of Terror, with Joel, Crow and Tom Servo riffing furiously on a half-baked story of fraternity pranks gone wrong; it's partnered with another interminable episode of the Bela Lugosi serial The Phantom Creeps. Next is Season Four's The Indestructible Man, in which Joel performs a frightening imitation of the movie's star, Lon Chaney Jr.; an episode of The Undersea Kingdom is also celebrated with a parade that goes predictably awry. Season Four's Tormented features headless ghosts, a guilt-ridden Richard Carlson, and Joel stuck in a ventilation shaft, plus a day-rescuing round of happy thoughts. And last but not least is Season Ten's Horrors of Spider Island, a German-made monster movie about dancers on a deserted island and a giant spider than transforms their manager into a hideous creature; Mike also undergoes a man-to-spider switcheroo after getting trapped in the 'bots' homemade spider web. For veteran MiSTies and pop culture fanatics, it doesn't get funnier than this.

Extras include theatrical trailers for all of the films save Ring of Terror; a brief interview with Tormented director Bert I. Gordon, his daughter Susan, and star Joseph Turkel, and wrap-arounds from the syndicated Mystery Science Hour, with Mike Nelson as an obsequious Jack Perkins, are also included. However, the best supplement is the second MST3K Jukebox, which compiles some of the show's funniest and most memorable musical numbers, including "Sidehackin',"Joel and the 'bots' garage-rock tribute to The Sidehackers and the incredible "Patrick Swayze Christmas" from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars The best TV comedy of the 90s.......2007-07-03

Yes, Seinfeld is the best sitcom of the 90s. But the funniest thing on TV during that decade was Mystery Science Theatre 3000. The jokes come fast and you better pay attention. Or just watch it again, you'll catch more one-liners the next time around from Joel (or Mike), Tom Servo, and Crow as they comment on really bad movies.

I've only seen the first episode on this volume, but it's a hoot. The running gag about middle-age actors playing college students never gets old.

4 out of 5 stars Too much Joel........2007-06-30

Too much Joel... Not enough Mike. The show is just better with Mike at the helm. Although, TV's Frank kind of makes up for it.

But, what choice do you have? Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars if you are smart you will preorder this.......2007-05-16

I can truly say that I own every set that rhino has ever put out. I never held off on buying them and to me that is a good choice. I have recently seen how high vol. 10 is going for online and I find that amazing considering the fact that I had preorder mine and paid half the price. Vol. 9 is also going for a hefty price as well. I feel that if you are a true MSTie, you will get this set in your hands as soon as possible, if for anything do it for the Mr. BIG movie. If you remember they had to pull one of his MSTied VHS movies off the shelf. With all of the being said I also have to say that there are some prime choice of episodes available on this set. Some of them have not seen the light of day in many years. I highly recommend this set to those who had only seen the show in it's SCIFI channel era and those whom have not seen very many of the Joel episodes. I myself is very interested in this st due to the fact that I have not seen them since their original runs.

5 out of 5 stars Best to Pre-Order while you can..........2007-05-09

If history has taught us anything it is this, you can't depend on the new MST3K sets to be available for long, so if you're interested it's best to get them while you can. Case in point, Mystery Science Theater 3000 volume 10... available for purchase for about three months and then it was suddenly pulled from the shelves in a quiet recall with no replacements ever sent out. I myself had to get Volume 10 off of eBay (at a hefty premium at that) because I waited too long thinking it was a buy I could put off for a little bit. How wrong I was. The moral of the story is, when Volume 11 comes out, (as well as volumes 12, 13, 14 and so on), it's better to hedge your bets and get it as fast as possible before they vanish all too soon.

Oh, and my reason for giving Volume 11 here a 5-Star rating sight unseen... that's just me being the loyal Mistie fan-boy that I am. =^)

5 out of 5 stars Another great set.........2007-05-03

If you're a fan of MST3K,then you'll want to get this right away,in case they lose the rights to some of the movies and of course, some of their funniest episodes are right here.If you love bad movies and have never seen MST3K,then what are you waiting for?? Do some movies that are really bad give you nightmares or shake your head as to what you've just seen??Then, let MST3K take that away from you and let them make fun,so you won't have to.Their pain is your enjoyment..I must admit that watching RING OF TERROR wasn't easy, but at least MST3K was there to make it more enjoyable. Thanks guys!! This is a great collection from a show that was nothing short of pure genius..Funny stuff indeed.Looking forward to each volume. Not only for classic episodes from MST3K,but the extras Rhino will include as well..Keep up the great work!!!

4 out of 5 stars TWO GREAT EPISODES , BUY WHY RE - RELEASE MANOS?.......2007-06-03

This is a great set,but I would have rather had another episode other than "Manos" that hasn't been released yet! If you are familar with the show, you know this set includes two great episodes "Manos Hands of Fate" and "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". If you are not familar with it, it isn't a bad place to start. This is a very funny show for those who "get it". I just hope they can continue to obtain the rights to the movies and keep releasing these gems. The essentials DVD collection (2 disc set) contains all that was included on the first Rhino single disc release of "Manos". The "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians" episode is a classic and this is the first time it has been released on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars DVD.......2007-04-11

The show is still funny BUT - I prefer the orignial cast and crew and would not pay over $10.00 ( shipping included ) for this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Good choice.......2007-03-14

Anything from the folks at Best Brains is a winner, as far as I am concerned, but I was hoping for more special features. Nonetheless, if you want to pick 2 essential episodes those would be it. Manos is one of my top 5 fave episodes, and it had been years since I'd seen Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. So, if you are a die-hard MST3K fan like me you'll still love it no matter what.

5 out of 5 stars "Ziggy had Garfield nuetered? Now that's funny!".......2007-02-28

If anything this is one of my favorite MST3K collections, as it contains two of the funniest episodes ever produced:

"Manos: The Hands of Fate"? YES! This episode is definitely the best of the two, as one of top 100 worst films of all time has been skewered in every way shape, and form, even the opening sequence itself. This episode contains really funny riffings that run at a fast rate. And as you can tell from the title of this review, this contains my favorite host segment: the Cartuner, a device that mixes two unfunny comic strips in one and makes the comic funny. This a sheer way to end MST's fourth season with a bang. 10/10

"Santa Claus Conquers The Martians" is another favorite of mine, as Joel and the bots really rip on another Saturday-morning children's film involving Martians trying to find jolly ol' St. Nick himself to bring Christmas to Mars. As stupid as this film is, the commentary with Joel and the 'bots is uproariously funny, host segments and all. Let's have a Patrick Swayze Christmas for this one, why don't we? 9.5/10

In addition, you'll also get a funny half-hour outtake reel. 8/10

5 out of 5 stars Worth It For Manos .......2007-02-01

Manos: The Hands of Fate is one of the funniest MST3K's and it comes with Santa Versus the Martians which is odd and funny in it's own right. I don't think Rhino is going to produce another Essentials DVD set since their compliations tend to come in 4 disc sets now. Hired! also comes in this package about the 45 yr. old who seems to have trouble training his car salesmen employees not to mention that he's 45 years old and still lives with his parents.

5 out of 5 stars A Starter Kit & Collector's Must-Have.......2007-04-16

This MST3K collection is the perfect set for both die-hard fans and viewers who are new to the show. The movies are bad in a ripe, juicy way, making it easy to squeeze every last drop of possible humor out of their horrendous dialogue, lame-duck plots, and trapped-in-a-paper-bag acting.

For collectors and afficianados, this collection is a no-brainer. For everyone else, it makes an excellent starter kit to get you into and hooked on this intelligent, delightful, and addictive show. This particular set contains the following:

CAVE DWELLERS - Miles (and miles) O'Keefe stars as Ator, the greasy, chesty hero who must travel to the ends of the earth in order to stop a strange and mystical device (the Geometric Nucleus -- never seen, never explained, never mind) from falling into the evil hands of some man with a black swan helmet. Along the way he fights invisible warriors (this film's version of cost-saving casting), a fiberglass cobra, and -- of course -- a few cave dwellers. Both well-read and beefy, Ator is assisted in his quest by his mostly mute sidekick, Dong (or is it Wong? Chong? Ba-da-bong?), and a hubcap-clad warrior woman whose name, I believe, is Linda. Joel and the bots discuss foley artist techniques, reprise the opening credits of the film in their own tongue-in-cheek fashion, and discuss ways bad movies make bad props sound better than they are. Delicious if for no other reason than the hang-glider scene.

ANGELS REVENGE - A thinly disguised rip-off of Charlie's Angels, this self-righteous dud treats us to feeble-minded drug dealers beating up school children and a typically-squinty Jack Palance doing as little acting as he possibly can. Other down-on-their-luck stars exploit their dwindling fame as well (Peter Lawford, Pat Burtrum, Alan hale, Jim Backus, and Arthur Godfrey), prompting Tom to invent a Shame-O-meter, just to gauge how pathetic the movie really is. A few of the host segments fall a little flat and seem short-changed, but that doesn't detract from Mike and the bots' able and always incisive commentary. Listen for KPLOT, watch for the scenes of young teens being instructed on proper gun use, cringe at the overly-excessive administration of groin torture, and laugh at eight women "sneaking" into a drug compound in broad daylight while wearing downy-white Evel Kineval jumpers.

POD PEOPLE - The filet mignon of MST3K episodes, "Pod People" features some of the best jokes and gags Joel and the bots have ever pitted against a film. This travesty of a movie concerns the deaths of a few brain-dead poachers (one of them is a Leslie Nielsen look-alike, the other looks like he belongs around the potato cauldron at a Renaissance Fair), the "antics" of a horrendous band (boasting a combined IQ of 12), and the machinations of a couple of murderous aliens that look like the love-children of Alf and an upright Hoover (with attachments). The plot also follows a precocious young boy as he deals with parental neglect, his uncaring and alcoholic grand/father, and a whole host of traumatizing sights. Featuring a hilarious spoof of one of the band's feature songs ("It stinks!") and a delightful recreation of Trumpy's abilities, this episode contains everything that made MST3K a brilliant show. If this one doesn't turn you into an fan, nothing will.

SHORTS, VOL. 1 - Okay, well, maybe this would be better for newbies. Hosted by Tom Servo, this disc provides viewers with 10 and 15 minute "shorts," brief, bite-sized educational clips hailing mostly from the 50s and designed -- primarily -- to teach suppression and the Great White Way to unsuspecting schoolchildren. A short on Home Economics (one of my all-time favorites) follows four girls through college as they major in various things like baby sitting, how to set a table, and (no fooling!) being a good wife. A short on good grooming encourages not just clean skin and hair, but also unswerving conformity to all traditional standards of clothing. Speaking of conformity, "A Date with Your Family" is one of the most frightening short films I've ever seen, a diatribe on familial duty that demands that children dress casually for a home meal, never ask dad for money, and always make sure dinner time conversations are as unemotional as possible. (Seriously. The narrator uses the word "unemotional.") Others include an industrial arts segment (much like the Home Economics clip, except here you have guys talking about how much they love the "smooth feel of wood pushing through a buzzing saw"), a piece on "The Chicken of Tomorrow" (a bizarre title for a boring subject), cheating (in which a young boy who cheats on a test is treated as a leperous pariah by rib-less students and teachers alike), and a Junior Rodeo in which young children risk their lives and spines for a fleeting moment of unbridled, bucking fame.

Unsettling Depression-era edutainment, 70's technicolor plaigarism, sci-fi/fantasy tomfoolery, and self-congratulatory heavy handedness: this collection harbors some of MST3K's worthiest (and cheesiest) foes. It's a treasure to be able to watch Mike, Joel, Tom and Crow chop them to bits with high-brow allusions, goofy witticisms, and hilarious insights. If you like watching bad movies with your best friends (or if you're the type who can't help making wise comments when you see something lame), MST3K should be a treat, making this collection the equivalent of a candy shop of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch MST3k.......2007-03-23

I would recommend this box set for anyone who is new to Mystery Science Theater 3000; and if you're already a fan and you don't have this one, what are you waiting for? "Cave Dwellers" and "Pod People" are two of the finest episodes in the shows ten year history. The movies are just so goofy that they beg for commentary from Joel and his robot pals. And they deliver with some of their best and funniest commentary ever. (Though some fans who prefer the Sci-fi channel era may disagree). "Angels Revenge" is another fine episode because the movie is so terrible that you simply have to laugh. Also features "Shorts vol. 1, which contains several short films with classic commentary from Joel, Mike, Crow and Servo that will keep you laughing for hours. Also, the skits on the Satellite are very funny as well, with several parodies of scenes from the featured movies. For me, this is the best MST3k compilation from Rhino home video, along with volume five. They are a little high priced, but check out Amazon's new and used section for a good deal. It will be worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the collections.......2006-12-23

MST was pretty great throughout its run, but these flicks mark the apogee of the show's excellence.

"Cave Dwellers" and "Pod People" are the best. Both are, of course, horrid flicks, but even on their own are tremendously enjoyable. Joel and the Bots are completely on top of their riffing game, from their evisceration of Trumpy to Ator's hang-gliding performance (the latter answers the age-old question: How much Keefe is in this movie? The answer is obvious: Miles O'Keefe.

"Angel's Revenge" is a tremendous '70s/'80s homage/ripoff of "Charlie's Angels", with a nod to Russ Meyer. The cast reads like a who's-who of spent actors of the era: Peter Lawford, Jim Backus, Alan Hale Jr., Jack Palance. Only "Mitchell" comes close to replicating the latter phenomenon.

The shorts are good, but somewhat superfluous.

Any fan of the series should have this as part of their collection.

Now if we could just get "Master Ninja" I & II, "Alien from L.A.", "The Giant Gila Monster" amd "Warrior of the Lost World", my life would be complete. And "Puma Man".

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Witty and just a bit (the good kind of ) Stupid!.......2006-08-07

This is a classic show! I used to watch these as a kid on the SciFi channel and they are just as funny now that I am an adult! The characters are great, and you will think that they made the movies up because they are just that bad... The best part about this, is that when my sister-in-law was a kid and these were on TV, she saw her favorite movie as the subject of one of them. I wont reveal which movie, but it is pretty funny when you recognise one of these!

5 out of 5 stars MST 3000 - must see.......2006-02-16

The movies they watch are ones that I hadn't ever seen before so that was a treat. Joel and the robots are really funny in these and their comments are hilarious. I had a real fun time with these and they are worth watching again and again.

Journey once more through the portals on the Satellite of Love to the best of the worst that cinema has to offer. Joel, Mike, and their "robot friends" do another hilarious orbit around four full-length features, presenting the kind of skits and wisecracking commentary that are clearly written by the culturally insane.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Goofy fun.......2007-02-12

While not the best selections from the MST3K vault, you can't go wrong with just about anything from this zany crew. I rarely recommend MST3K to others because the world seems to be divided into two categories of people--those that enjoy MST3K and those that don't. For my fellow MYSTIES: it's a great buy.

"Monster A Go-Go" (Joel), "The Dead Talk Back", and "Phantom Planet" are excellent, but the real treasure here is "Hobgoblins." After viewing this episode a half-dozen times, the lawn tools fight scene still brings tears to my eyes (for several reasons).

While on the subject, PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND/OR HUMANITY, BRING THIS SHOW BACK!!! With hundreds of satellite and cable stations, surely SOMEONE should give syndication or (dare I say it?) new episodes (I dared) a try. If such "classics" as "Yes, Dear" and "Full House" can make it to syndication, why not this genuinely hilarious show?!!??

5 out of 5 stars The best of the worst!.......2007-01-13

I've always loved MST3K since I was a teenager, and now I get to cherish those old episodes with the MST3K collections. This one is perfect for newcomers and old fans alike, as some of the worst episodes they ever did are slapped together in a 4-DVD collection.

1.PHANTOM PLANET (#902)
This 1950's (or early 1960's) sci-fi snooze is about an astronaut with a bad haircut having his ship drawn strangly to a small planet that looks like a piece of fried chicken (Oh no, it's deep fried!) and forced to live with very small aliens (Aka tiny earthlings.). This movie has a lot of stiff and boring acting, and wait until you hear the wonderful speech by the captain's co-pilot, who dies only 10 minutes later in the film. What kind of message were they going for?

2.THE DEAD TALK BACK (#603)
This movie is just plain stupid. A freelance scientist (probably the director, since he's so into his role) invents a machine which, he claims, will allow him to talk with the dead and solve a woman's murder. Turns out it doesn't, which should've ended the movie the moment it began, but instead, we are dragged along for 80 minutes in a bad detective-story/sci-fi pile of garbage that tries to deliver itself as entertainment. Mike and the bots really let loose on this one, due to the film's bizarre plotpoints involving a stalker (It's hard to stalk people without a car!), bongo players, and a brain that looks like cauliflower. Nothing is known about this odd little independent film, except that it was never released. It does appear that besides the floating stool, the only other special effects were the actors' bad haircuts. The short that preceds it, The Selling Wizard, is a creepy advertisement on how to sell freezers. It's very amusing.

3.MONSTER A GO-GO (#421)
Oh my God. This might be the worst movie I've ever seen. The plot, if there is one, involves a missing astronaut suspected of being a radioactive murderer. Too bad they only follow this plot for about 30 seconds. The remaining 60 minutes consist of scientists mumbling about how to kill the monster, shots of firemen working on sewers, and people left mutilated (not really, just in funny and akward positions.). Joel and the bots really let loose on this one, but by the "suprise ending," they are completly exhausted and sound like they're on the verge of mental breakdown. Notice the hilarious scene with the telephone!

4.Hobgoblins (#907)
No, wait, this is the worst movie I've ever seen. From the director who brought you Vice Academy and Babe Watch, comes Hobgoblins, an extremely bad ripoff of Gremlins. The movie tries to have a plot involving goblins that can mess with people's minds, but then the movie trails off into bad sexual fantasies with Robert Plant (watch the movie for details), a ex-soldier who sets himself on fire in one scene, then comes back with a few scratches (What the hell?!), and some other things that scar the brain. See! The 47 car parking scenes! Hear! The Fish Picker Song! See! A really badly made no-budget horror film that makes no sense!

So there you have it, folks, some of the worst movies ever made with some hilarious commentary from MST3K. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars One of MST3K's Best Compliations .......2006-12-21

I currently have all of the Mst3k's compliation sets (I recently purchased vol.10) But I would have to say that this one which includes: "Monster A-GO GO" "Phantom Planet" "Hobgoblins" and "The Dead Talk Back" is one of the best. Reviews Below:

Monster A-GO GO - least favorite of the four. The plot is almost non-existent. It consist of an uber-tall guy with a bad skin condition walking around in a space suit strangling random people he happens upon. Then seemingly in another movie, scientists are having coffee and discussing issues that have very little to do with what is going on. Joel and the Bots riff away on this piece of celluliod cheese, however they seem exhausted by the end. This movie drains the very fabric of space and time.

Phantom Planet - "Everyday of my life I am reminded..." And the rest you'll have to see to get the whole quote. I honestly forgot it but it's funniest piece of drivel I've ever heard between two male characters in a movie who were not lovers. This movie was bad but not as bad as Monster A-GO GO which was almost unwatchable even with Joel and the Bots riffing at it. This one has Mike and the Bots riffing which makes this one bearable at least. I don't think Joel could've pulled this one off.

The Dead Talk Back - Funny as hell. Watch out for Ludwig Kruger, he's a sexual deviant! Oh and the crossbow killing is solved by tricking the idiot killer into believing that the girl he stuck to front porch of boarding house with an arrow through the heart is actually alive. "My name is REENE.."

Hobgoblins - Another movie with severval sexual deviants. The funniest of the four in my opinion. Stupid plot of course. People are getting chased around some (Canadian more than likely) town by grotesque green puppets. Never go to Club Scum.

This is definitely something you want in your collection. If you are a fan of the show you already know this.

3 out of 5 stars "He has his outdoor eyebrows on." Good, but buyer beware..........2006-10-10

I hate giving anything MST3K-related less than four stars but in this case I sort of have to. Three of these episodes are hosted by Mike--75% Mike and 25% Joel is automatically a plus. Unfortunately that is not enough to make this set a must-have.

The first problem: two dud episodes (Monster A-Go Go and The Phantom Planet). I cannot seem to find much good in either of these episodes no matter how I have tried. Even the short on Monster A-Go Go is not worth the time it takes to watch it, which is truly odd as you usually can't go wrong with a short that has been mstified.

The next problem: MAJOR flaws in the disc for The Dead Talk Back. Fantastically funny episode, one of my favorites, but the dvd has nonstop errors. This is not just an error on my disc or a certain batch of discs that were released, it is across the board, every single disc released as far as anyone knows. This is a very strong episode but these sets are NOT cheap so to pay upwards of fifty bucks for what already starts off as a mediocre set of episodes and get a movie with so many errors on it is a bit upsetting. The screen shots of these errors are available online so you may want to take a look before you spend your hard-earned money. For me I would have purchased the set either way but I am also a hardcore fan. For the more casual viewer I would recommend renting this on Netflix to test it out so to speak and see how much you like it. If you can ignore the terrible quality of this episode (Rhino's fault, by the way) you are in for some big laughs as we see a cross-bow murder mystery unravel with the help of a man who claims his invention can enable the murdered to talk to us ("Oh it's true"). The disc is not unwatchable but for the price you're going to pay I feel you must be prepared to be annoyed at the very least.

What does make this set well worth the cost of the dvds for me aside from The Dead Talk Back (despite its bad quality) is the classic Hobgoblins episode. A big favorite among MSTies this terrible movie would probably have you rolling on its own but Mike and the bots make it all the better with their razor-sharp commentary and riffing and they manage to help us through it even when the movie becomes so bad that they leave the theater! But they don't leave us alone...watch this one to see what I mean. Be sure to wear your red shorts, boys. Basically this movie is about Hobgoblins, Gremlin-like creatures from outer space that can somehow make people act out their biggest fantasies...and then die in the process, er, yeah. Don't ask me, folks, it doesn't make sense, but that's part of the fun!

If you are new to MST3K I wouldn't start here, but I would definitely stop by.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the worst movies in this one.......2006-08-13

Wow, selling Hobgoblins and Monster A-Go-Go together is a bold move. You can't get more low-budget than those. The Dead Talk Back is pretty darn low-budget as well. Phantom Planet is decent, but only if you want to only see large amounts of boring talking.

Let's start with Phantom Planet. Servo comments, "This movie is a filibuster!" and he's right. Even the stinger at the end credits seems like it's 90 minutes long. It's some guy saying, "You know captain, every year of my life I become more and more convinced, that the wisest and the best is to focus our attention on the good and the beautiful, if you just take the time to look at it." The movie flat out states that when people travel to different planets, their oxygen level determines their size. In other words, people are just balloons. Gosh, these old B-movies did ZERO scientific research before churning out their garbage to audiences.

Too bad it only gets worse from here. Let's go to The Dead Talk Back. It comes with a short. Hooray! The short is The Selling Wizard. Hooray! I love this short. It's nothing but an attempt to sell you a grocery store freezer, and for some reason it's darn funny. Whether you want to sell people ice cream in poorly-designed packages, or stack bodies easily, this is the freezer for you. The movie that follows the short is laughable. It starts with some poor sap trying to convince you that he's going to be able to invent a device that will allow him to communicate with the dead. Of course, Mike and the bots infer that such a task won't be easy while the guy's living in his mother's basement. A murder takes place early in the movie, and from there it's basically a whodunnit. Heck, with the multiple narrators, you have a hard enough time trying to figure out who's explaining the scene to you, much less trying to figure out who the murderer is. Even though putting a razor blade in a glass doesn't magically solve the crime by making a good enough radio to talk with the dead, the dumb guy from the beginning gives it a try anyway.

I heard about Monster A-Go-Go before seeing it, and it was much worse than I thought it would be. The final quarter of the movie drags and drags like you never felt a movie drag before. It's worse than Deep Hurting, Rock Climbing, and Hypno-Helio-Static-Stasis combined. GOSH it's boring. The rest of the movie is great fodder. You don't know ANY characters, NONE of the scenes look good, and you yourself could make a better movie in your backyard. I'm not kidding.

Speaking of making a movie in your backyard, let's talk about Hobgoblins. Oh man, the hobgoblins themselves are the most unrealistic puppets of all time. I swear, this movie has NO special effects. How can anyone get through it? By riffing of course. There's plenty of idiot teens and an old guy available to riff on. Plus there's a band on a stage that might as well be singing the directions to the restroom. This movie is an embarassment to even the most dirt-cheap of productions.

None of these movies have plots that are worth following. Of course, Monster A-Go-Go doesn't even have a plot...I don't think. I've seen it a few times and I still don't know. I always talk about how awful Laserblast is, and it might actually be better than all four of the movies in this collection. Buy the DVDs here only if you're really, really brave and trust the MST3K crew to get you through the very worst in cinematic history, because these movies are really bad, even compared to what was usually seen on the show. You won't find worse stuff anywhere. I love it.

This four-disc set, bundled together in an appropriately cheesy but charming package that sports pop-up-book-styled artwork, compiles four episodes of the Peabody Award-winning comedy series. The "experiments" in question (Bloodlust, Catalina Caper, The Creeping Terror, and The Skydivers) aren't necessarily MST3K's finest hours--they don't hold a candle to the show's takes on The Magic Sword, The Atomic Brain, and The Brain That Wouldn't Die. But the barrage of verbal zingers and pop-culture references slung by hosts Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson and their puppet pals Crow and Tom Servo are still quite funny, and should please both longtime fans and science fiction aficionados who don't take too much umbrage at having their beloved movies heckled.

The Collection is decidedly Mike-centric, with The Creeping Terror, Bloodlust, and The Skydivers all culled from his reign during the sixth season. Series creator Joel Hodgson's participation is relegated to season 2's Catalina Caper, a fan favorite that at one time was pulled from circulation over rights issues. As with most of Rhino's MST3K DVDs, each disc is dual-sided, with one side devoted to the original, uncut version of each film, and the other given over to the "MSTied" version. Theatrical trailers for each movie round out the remainder of the supplemental features. Given the size of this presentation, it might have been interesting to include some interviews with the show's writers and performers (Comedy Central once ran a passable special about the series), but fans will still appreciate having these four episodes together, each providing a wealth of laugh-out-loud moments. --Paul Gaita

Have fun waiting to order this DVD. I ordered this back in January of 2007, and still have not received this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Good one, but not the best set..........2007-03-26

MST3K Volume 1 features three episodes with Mike Nelson and one with the show's creator Joel Hodgson. Three of these are funny while one is pretty lousy.

-The Skydivers: Not very clear what this one is totally about, but there's a couple trying to keep their marriage together, even though they both cheated also there's plenty of skydiving footage, some dancing and a lot of bad dialogue. Good lines throughout this one, like Mike's "Did the actors do their own skydiving?" followed by Crow's "No, the skydivers did their own acting", near the end when one guy is chasing the villains and driving fairly cautiously Mike pops "Whether chasing or being chased, remember drive defensively" and finally Mike's comment on the lack of action "Seems like they forgot to have things happen in this movie". Great comments on the bad acting too as well as the horrible editing, like Crow's shot at a bad jump cut, "Someone with attention deficit disorder edited this movie" and Servo's quip about a skydiver falling way too fast out of the plane, "Geez, the last 2000 feet are the quickest". Great episode overall, 10/10.

-The Creeping Terror: Some monster crash lands on earth, starts eating people and grows, but is nice enough to let the people he eats help him move along, as it's obvious that's what's happening. There's also a sherriff, his wife and his best friend trying to find the monster with the help of a proffesor of sorts and a branch of the military (seems like it's a broken branch, though). Loved the lines, "Did anyone in the 50's ever think of running?" as characters just stand there and let the monster eat them basically, when the monster tries to eat a couple of people in a car with the roof down, it looks like he's doing something well, nasty with the car, Mike's "Well you see when a monster and a small car love each other very much" and when the momster's done Servo says "Well, that was a new twist on an old trick huh", when the main guy tries to smash some spacship technology with the butt of a gun Mike comments "Hey, there are bullets in the other end of that thing". Loved this episode, so absurd and badly done, 10/10.

-Bloodlust-This one has Robert Reed (The Dad from "The Brady Bunch") and three other teens/20 somethings finding an island that houses a man who likes to hunt things including people for sport. The comments about Reed holding his gut in are funny, especially Crow's "Man, his shirt's so tight you can see his liver". Other funny lines include when a drunk man sees the four people Mike quips "All eight of 'em?" in a drunk voice, when two of the teens? are exploring the mansion one of the henchmen comes into the room their hiding not very well in and as he's about to leave he turns around and Crow says "When did I have teenagers installed?", my favorite is at the end when the villain gets his throat and hands pierced against spikes on a wall Servo says "Why this symbolism, did Christ hunt people on deserted islands?". There are some dead spots in the film and in the quips, but this is a funny episode, just not as good as other ones they've done, 8/10.

-Catalina Caper-Weird and pretty unfunny one here, something about a painting being stolen and some beach boys and girls try to find out who dunnit, I think. Not a lot of memorable lines here, but that's largely because the movie itself is a really bad comedy and Joel and the bots can only do so much. Skip this one unless you've seen other Joel episodes as this shouldn't be your first or even second or third introduction to him. 3/10.

The extras include the original un-cut movies, but trying to sit through them with the commentary is hard enough, if you try to pay attention to the film itself that is. Also there are original trailers for every movie, but "The Creeping Terror".

Good set overall, just skip "Catalina Caper" again unless you've seen other Joel episodes beforehand. 8/10.

1 out of 5 stars You Gotta Be Kidding Me...........2006-11-13

I have got to agree with Jerika (Why did he get 4 not helpful votes?) 10.00+ per episode is way overpriced. I predict this will be re-released someday in a lower priced set or the off the air sellers will continue to have a field day selling the non Rhino complete sets (seasons 0-10) for $90.00. I guess its good that its out so you could rent it through Netflix, but collectors unless pretty well off, will probably pass at this price point. Hey I love the show, 5 stars for material, but 1 star for not being a complete season and for twice the price of the going rate for a complete season TV show on DVD now.

4 out of 5 stars One of the funniest shows on TV.......2006-07-15

MST appealed to pretty much all levels of humor and thought. Brilliant concept, brilliantly (but cheesily) executed. The cheese was part of its charm. In college I used to stay up til 1:00 to record the episodes on Comedy Central and cut out the commercials. The one and only thing holding me back from buying this box set (and others) is the PRICE!!!!!! Fifty bucks for four stinkin' films that everyone knows are not that great to begin with? And no extras, no interviews, no nothin' but 4 movies they did a long time ago? You can't convince me they had to pay that much for the rights to Catalina Caper, or any of these other stinkburgers. It may just be that the boys are trying to profit as much as they can, since the series is no more (many of them left it early to puruse individual careers, and were never heard from again--the medical term for this is the M*A*S*H Syndrome, btw). Still, greed is a poor motivator, and it's alienating die-hard MSTies in the fan base, like me. No pun intended.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SET HERE! GIVE ME MORE!!!!!.......2007-06-13

This is a very funny set of episode on volume 7. I am a fan of some of these old movies and "The Killer Shrews" is one goofy old film I've seen many times without the jokes! If your a fan of these guys this is another great set.

5 out of 5 stars "Killer Shrew. Killer Shrew. Don't know the difference from me and you...".......2007-02-28

As much as I am a huge fan of MST3K, this set is easily one of the strongest DVD collections that Rhino has put out. With three episodes from the Joel/Comedy Central era and one from the Sci-Fi era, this set will keep you occupied for so long, what with repeated viewings and all.

The set kicks off with "Hercules Unchained", with a plot line I've never heard in the Greek myth stories: Hercules goes on a mission and drinks the "water of forgetfulness" and, you guessed it, forgets everything about his life, and is lured to some...secret kingdom of some sort. Joel and the bots have a real fun time with this one, as in one of the host segments, they make fun of the phrase "water of forgetfulness" with the food they eat and drink, like asparagus of happiness or something like that. 8/10

"Hercules Against The Moon Men" is a little stronger than the previous film, although it would have been best to not compile two Hercules in one set. Still, this movie is worth-watching. Granted, only a few of the riffs have been repeated from the previous Hercules flick, but it also contains some much stronger riffs than the other. This film involves Hercules on a mission to find out what the fuss is about with, you guessed it, the Moon Men. It has one of the funniest host segments: The Pants Song, sung by Joel and the bots, making fun of the costumes worn by the characters in the film. 8.5/10

While the Sci-Fi era may be considered to be Ganon's Sacred Realm for MST3K, you still get a gem every now and then. "Prince of Space" is one of those gems from that era. Granted, the host segments aren't really up to par, but the really cheesy film, as well as riffings from Mike and the bots really make up for it. This is your below-average, Saturday morning, children's Japanese superhero flick, that would better told in just a half hour than stretching it to an hour and a half. Memorable riffs pop up now and then such as "Krank 'wh*re'?", and the riffs run at a fairly consistent rate, keeping you occupied for quite a while. 7.5/10

This set goes out with a bang. That bang is "The Killer Shrews", one of my favorite episodes. I do believe cheesy monster flicks are so easily funny to poke at, making some of the funniest episodes of the series and this one is no exception. The plot is simple: a couple guys are sailing on a boat and arrive at an island infested with giant shrews. Some great moments are present here, including the Killer Shrew song ("Killer Shrew, Killer Shrew, Don't know the difference from me and you..."), and the riffs are consistently hilarious, making this the real highlight of this set. 9/10

In addition, you'll also get a few bonus featurette riffings from Joel and the bots, including a rarely seen featurette, "Assignment Venezuela", all of which are worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Deeeep Hurting...!.......2006-12-21

I brought this compliation mainly for the feature "Prince of Space" one of the last MST3K episodes I saw before the show was cancelled on the now weakened and somewhat abysmal SciFi Channel. But I found the two Hercules features and Killer Shrews to be just as hilarious. One of the Hearcules features was directed by a famous Italian director who also made Black Sunday and Planet of the Vampires.

4 out of 5 stars Prince of Space.......2006-12-08

What can I add? I really miss MS3K. I HAD to get this collection, mainly for Prince of Space. I remember growing up and seeing this craptacular on a local UHF station. The two Hercules movies, eh. Some funny stuff there but the Shrews is better than both combined. Still, it a must have for any fan of MST3K!

This is a great set. This was my first, but now I have 5 sets. I love MST3K!

5 out of 5 stars Everything I Touch Turns To Flies.......2006-05-07

When MST3K came to the Sci-Fi Channel in 1997, it was understood that the movies up for MST'ing would be bad science fiction/horror movies (and let's face is, there are billions of them; at least a thousand are being made as I write this, I am sure). And the first two Sci-Fi seasons consisted mostly of science fiction and horror movies. But in its last season, all that changed.

Witness "Girl in Gold Boots." It's horrible, to be sure, but not a horror movie, unless you count the fact that the titular girl dances in a go-go joint called "The Haunted House." And if you are looking for a reason to buy this collection, this is the stand-out episode. Fanboys laud "Space Mutiny" as the best thing Mike, Servo and Crow ever did in the history of the show, and although I agree it is a fine episode, it is not my favorite. And I am not entirely comfortable with Mike and the bots riffing on Shakespeare, even if it is a stagy German film of "Hamlet". And God knows "Overdrawn At the Memory Bank" has its legions of fans and to this day I sometimes sing, "Come as you are to my mall, to my a-a-trium." But "Girl in Gold Boots" - consider it "Manos! The Musical!"

There is just so much to love about "Girl in Gold Boots." The movie itself - a kind of badly lit, badly written, badly directed, badly acted version of "Rebel Without a Cause," if James Dean's character had been a homicidal maniac and Sal sang bad folk songs and Natalie worked at a greasy spoon. What the movie wants to say, at least from the hilarious trailer included in the DVD, is that young people in the 60s faced many temptations - drugs, committing petty crime, dancing, oily club owners, girls not only in gold boots, but also in silver boots. But if they held tight to their beliefs, listened to their hearts and played their guitars in the rain, they could find the right path.

The riffing in "Girl in Gold Boots" is impeccable. My hat is eternally off to Tom Servo for his "Charles Manson is walking the streets/The Zodiac Killer's at large/Charles Bukowski is puking out the window/and Santa Claus is on his way!" during the epic drive into L.A. And how lovely of Crow to note Buz's teleportation into a scene in a bar with a snappy "I'm back!" and calling the trio "natural born cheapskates" as they decide how to divide up the bill. And Mike - Oh, Mike - he just had to ruin Buz's moment in the sun, marveling over his front-page worthy gas station heist in which he stole $40 and left the attendant slightly injured. Luckily the crime was committed on a day when L.A. was riot-free. Like wow, man.

I implore the powers that be to keep the Sci-Fi episodes rolling on DVD. Let's all collectively pray that "Riding With Death," "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies," "The Agent From H.A.R.M.," "The Thing That Wouldn't Die," and "Werewolf" all make their way safely to one of these collections very soon.

Always remember: keep your silver bra filled with breasts!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Mike .......2006-03-14

I love all MST3K, The epic Mike V. Joe debate is irrelavent to me as long as they make me giggle. If you are a anti-mike than this set is not for you, all 4 movies are from the mike era and if I understand the numbers correctly 2 are from the last season. I thoiught the hamlet episode was a little weak, but I have yet to watch the last 20 min so maybe it ends strong. MST3K RULES it's my favorite rainy day movies

No problem with the item, but it was supposed to come from the USA (here to the UK) so the two/three week waiting time was warranted. But when it arrived, it had postage marks from Germany -- which takes less than a week to arrive, so a bit miffed about that, could have had it a lot sooner.

This farewell episode for Joel Hodgson is a sentimental favorite but even more worth it for the hilarity spawned by our captured Satellite of Love friends. The movie centers on the hapless, big lug cop named Mitchell (Joe Don Baker), who fights the rich and powerful drug-dealing bad guys. Along the way, Mitchell finds himself investigating murder, falling "in sex" with Linda Evans, helping an elderly woman like a good son, and telling a bothersome wisecracking kid to buzz off. Match that with clothing and music from 1975 and you've got prime fodder for the biting remarks of Joel, Crow, and Tom Servo--which, of course, they take advantage of handily and in abundance. Mitchell has a few quiet areas but these are spotty, and when Joel and his mechanical friends start wisecracking, it's all hilariously worth the wait. Mitchell: So '70s, you'd swear Kris Kristofferson was moaning the theme song in the background. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars 'We're home Mitchell honey, Put your shoes on!'.......2007-06-08

Joe Don Baker is my hero. Apparently he has it in for the produces of MST3K for riffing this film so mercilessly, which just makes me love him all the more.

'Johnny Matthis!'

5 out of 5 stars Just watch it!.......2007-01-14

I laugh until I choke every time I watch this and have for almost 15 years now. Ah, what a sad day when Joel left the Satellite. I'm still grieving nearly half my current lifetime later. Mitchell is a perfect introduction to the glory days of MST and you'll be hard pressed not to love it. If ever there was a perfect movie to be riffed by those sacred Midwestern nerds, this was it.

5 out of 5 stars And I've Been Afraid of it All These Years...........2006-12-31

Actually, the full line is, "Hey, that shower wasn't so bad, and I've been afraid of it all these years..." It's what Crow says after Mitchell comes out of the bathroom in a robe. Yes, the title character of this movie takes a lot of riffing at the hands of the Satellite of Love crew, and that's just one of the things that makes this particular episode a must-see.

Joe Don Baker stars as Mitchell, a loveable, beer-drinking cop who sleeps with hookers and does things his own way...yet has a terrible eating disorder. Mitchell isn't an easy film to get through, but Joel, Tom, and Crow once again make the unbearable bearable via a constant flow of humorous remarks. Tom says Mitchell "likes to top off his beer drinking with another beer. It's like dessert." And when Mitchell is getting roughed up by thugs, we hear, "If they're not careful they'll end up with Mitchell's dinner all over them." Not to mention when Mitchell struggles to get up off the couch, some noises are made that aren't exactly flattering.

At least 75% of the comments in this episode are aimed directly at title character, and yet the character is so disgustingly likable that the comments never get old.

No review can do this episode justice. Just go out and have a laugh at poor old Joe Don Baker's expense. Hoyt Axton's "My, My, Mitchell" song will help you along the way.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite MST3K's........2006-12-19

I was a fan of the show when it was on TV, although I must admit I probably haven't watched that many of the episodes considering how many of them there are. I turned my husband on to it after we got married and he brought this treasure home as a gift one day. I hadn't ever seen this one so I was pleasantly surprised when we sat down to watch it and laughed (hard) throughout the entire thing. Gems such as "Hey, the headlight fixed itself" run through the whole movie. I promise you won't be disappointed with this one if you are a MST3K fan.

5 out of 5 stars Hysterical..........2006-08-24

If you've ever sat around with a group of friends and ripped on a bad movie then Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a show you can relate to. It became a ritual for a friend of mine and I when I was in college to come back late from a party and monopolize the dorm's TV room and watch this show at 2:00 in the morning. One of our favorite episodes was "Mitchell", which after viewing so many of the episodes has to be one of the funniest shows of the series. I'm sure a lot of it had to do with the fact that this was series creator Joel Hodgson's last episode; you could tell that they really pulled out all the stops with this one. Just the opening credits got ripped a new one for crying out loud...and they didn't slow down from there. "Mitchell" would be fodder for anyone that actually sits down to watch it, but Joel and the boys really destroy it. Whoever thought that Joe Don Baker would actually be a draw as an action star should be working at 7-11 now. He's fat, and Mitchell is an alcoholic, chain smoking (cigarillos no less), unintelligent, and unlikeable individual, all of which gives the occupants of the Satellite of Love ample material to work with. (I love that whenever Joe Don runs for any reason one of them wheezes and breathes heavy.) Even the theme song "Mitchell" gets blasted ("Oh Hoyt, how could you?"); I guess Mr. Axton was having a tough time financially to agree to write the theme song for the stinkfest called "Mitchell". (I mean, the guy did write "The Pusher", "Snowblind Friend" and "Greenback Dollar" after all, so we know he was capable of writing good music.) And of course, all the references to Mitchell's boozing are particularly funny when you're tipsy yourself. I still use these lines on a regular basis on friends and family, they just seem to come up sometimes. (Most recently when I gave a date a beer bottle and she said "I'd like a glass" and I remarked "Sorry your majesty". Its sad to actually be like Mitchell in some ways.) This stands as my favorite episode of MST3K, and after all these years it still cracks me up. Even if you aren't a fan of the show this one will make you laugh...it should have a guarantee.

It's business as usual for Mystery Science Theater 3000 in this sixth volume of episodes taken from the archives of the long-running television show, which is nothing but good news for MST3K's many adherents--and with four discs and six hours of content, neither longtime fans nor newcomers to the series will be shortchanged. The formula is the same as ever: having been sentenced by mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester to watch unspeakably bad movies (all part of the doc's wacky plan for world domination), janitor Joel Robinson (portrayed by series creator Joel Hodgson, who would later write for Jimmy Kimmel's variety show) and his robot buddies Crow and Tom Servo sit aboard their spaceship, the Satellite of Love, and do exactly that. Their own skits and interstitial shtick are mildly diverting, but as always it's the wisecracks our heroes direct at the screen that dominate the proceedings far more than the movies themselves. By turns genuinely witty and groan-inducing, their nonstop riffing, laden with puns, sarcasm, and cultural references (from poet Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" to atrocious pop songs like Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods' "Billy Don't Be a Hero," all in the space of a couple of breaths), usually drowns out the dialogue in the films. That's not a bad thing, of course, when the movies are turkeys on the order of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 6 lineup, which comes from episodes first aired between 1990 and 1994. They include Attack of the Giant Leeches (boasting perhaps the least convincing movie monsters ever created), Gunslinger (a Western that drags on interminably), and the self-explanatory Teenagers from Outer Space. Disc 3 contains six shorter films, and may be the best of the lot for that reason alone.

With Mystery Science Theater 3000 having departed the airwaves in 1999 (it began in '88), the show lives on primarily by way of these DVD releases. And while some would argue that a little of this stuff goes a fairly long way, Rhino's typically fine packaging and presentation (even without any bonus features) make this and the other MST3K sets a collector's treat. --Sam Graham

Description

Join Joel, Mike, and their "robot friends" as they endure the worst movies ever made, all for the pleasure of an evil scientist. To survive and maintain their sanity, these crazy captives make stinging quips and hilarious jokes at the expense of these torturous cinematic stinkers.

5 out of 5 stars "Mr. B., you're hot.".......2007-03-01

As much as I am a huge fan of MST3K, this set is easily one of the strongest DVD collections that Rhino has put out. With three episodes from the Joel/Comedy Central era and a disc full of "shorts", this set will keep you occupied for so long, what with repeated viewings and all.

"Attack of the Giant Leeches" is first on the list, and, well, hardly any attacking ever occurs. Joel and the bots have a good time with this film, although it's not really their best work in the 4th season. 7.5/10

"Gunslinger", one of Joel's last episodes, is a pretty slow-paced Roger Corman western that adds good fodder for the trio to riff at. It stands on the same level of the Giant Leeches film, though. 7.5/10

"Mr. B.'s Lost Shorts" happens to be a great compilation of selected shorts from certain episodes. They're all gems here, but the best is undoubtedly "Mr. B. Natural". As dull and retarded as an educational short can get, lost of hilarious riffs occur with this one, such "Joel, I'm scared.", or "Hey, leave my father out of this!" Seriously, this is really funny stuff. 9/10

This set goes off with a bang as "Teenagers From Outer Space", from the start adds great riffs from the trio. One of the best host segments occurs with the hosts explaining through illustration what happens in movies and in real life. 9/10

Well, that's it. I don't seem to like this set as much as Volume 7 or the Essentials, but this set still is a lot of fun. Worth the money, period.

1 out of 5 stars MST 3000---JUST AS I REMEMBER IT........2006-03-19

The MST 3000 Collection, Vol. 6 was as I hoped it would be (that
is, just as when I saw them the first time, I laughed through-
out each episode). The Collection has made certain B-movie bombs I would not watch a second time, make me want to go back for re- runs. The Sci-fiers "ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES" and "TEENAGERS
FROM OUTER SPACE" were made more watchable than many big bucks
horror flicks, contemporary and recent. It brings back to mind
again; why was it ever taken off the air?

4 out of 5 stars Two greats and two not so greats.......2005-09-12

Overall I'm really happy with this collection because of the inclusion of Teenagers From Outer Space and the Lost Shorts disc, but I would not have chosen to include Gunslingers, one of my least favorite episodes, and while Attack Of The Giant Leeches isn't bad it's not all that great either.

Teenagers From Outer Space is a new favorite of mine since getting this collection. Aside from being a hilarious episode it's suprisingly watchable as a movie, with a fast pace and a story that actually mostly makes sense, as well as some real emotion too. Of course it's cheesy in the way that all fifties space operas were, with goofy "space" suits, rayguns and a forced-perspective lobster for a monster. Seriously, it's a dead lobster. Not even a puppet. Just a lobster. "The high council will sentence you to TORCHA!!"

Mr. B's Lost Shorts is another gem, with the hilarious and wacky Mr. B Natural leading the way, followed by some old and grainy educational films about driving safety and marriage and a crazy acid-trip of a car commercial from the fifties.

Gunslinger is a poorly-made western which would be unbearable without Joel and the Bots to riff on it, and even with the jokes it's slow and agonizing. It's my second least favorite episode next to Catalina Caper and I wish something like Night Of The Bloodbeast had been included instead.

Attack Of The Giant Leeches is okay, but not a great episode in my opinion. It's drab and boring and the riffing does a lot to liven it up but not enough. The leeches themselves look like guys wearing garbage bags and silly string, so that's funny. But the episode in general disappoints.

All in all, the good makes up for the bad, so it's worth the money to me.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Joel collection, and Mr. Bs shorts for a bonus.......2005-08-10

This is a great selection for fans of the Joel era. You have one of the funniest shorts ever in "Undersea Kingdom" In which a group of sailors and a bratty little kid named Billy, and find the sunken continent of Atlantis. The reguallar movies on this selection are Top Notch, "Attack Of The Giant Leeches" is borefest that only J&TBs can cure when a cheating wife and her husband's best friend go missing, leave to jerky wildlife mnagement expert to save the day, (or at least find the bodies). Teenage Aliens, where bleeding heart rebels against his alien peers, and decides to not cause an apocoliptic lobster ruin planet earth. The shorts are always a bonus, Mr. B Natural is always a good one to use in order to turn a chum into a misty.

"Joel, don't you have anything better to do than psychoanalyze a bunch of robots?" Apparently not in this hilarious installment of MST3K, in which Joel Hodgson and the robots of the Satellite of Love deconstruct this starched and stiff juvenile delinquent drama with everything from art projects to a giant mobile representing the hero's roiling subconscious. Square high school kid Jimmy is on trial for murder in this cautionary drama told in flashback, in which we learn all about this nice boy driven to lies, crime, and the arms of a nightclub floozy by a negligent father, an alcoholic mother, and his own utter stupidity. The film's cheesy nightclub number inspires Joel and the bots to put on their own version: Gypsy lip-synchs the lyrics while the other three pop in and out of costume to play the entire audience. "Seriously, Joel, who would you accuse?" --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars MST3K At It's Best!.......2006-11-03

In my humble opinion this is the best episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 in that show's long history. The original cast and writers are at the peak of their powers with this one, taking an otherwise gray documentary on "Truck Farming" and an equally gray, otherwise forgettable 1940s feature (I Accuse My Parents) and turning it into comedy gold. If fans (MSTies)want to introduce news fans to this hilarious show, this is the episode to show them. From the mad scientists "Cake and Shake" invention ("A real exotic dancer inside!") to the snappy riffs of the short ("In Texas there's a further problem..." "Texans!")to the hilarious host segments (particularly the biting analysis of the mind of the film's protagonist. "You know, Joel, it could be that Jimmy's just really stupid") to the rapid-fire riffing of the main film ("I won the "Get the crap kicked out of you" contest!"), this episode is non-stop laughs that even non-fans of the show should enjoy. MST3K was one of the funniest shows in televison history, and this was its epitome.

5 out of 5 stars Hye, I won the essay contest!.......2006-09-26

I like to think of I Accuse My Parents as the perfect gateway MST3K episode. Not only is the movie laughably moronic in several different ways--without being as mind numbingly boring as Manos, the Hands of Fate--it's proceeded by an awesome short about truck farming and the host segments are all pretty funny as well. My sister and I got my mother to drink the cool-aid with this one, and it was made better because she was pretty sure she'd actually seen the truck farming short in school. I also indoctrinated my girlfriend with it and now it's become one of her favorites.

Yes, this is a Joel episode, but it's Joel at his best. If you don't come out of watching this with at least three or four new catch phrases added to your vocabulary, there is no hope for you at all. You should probably blame your parents for that.

5 out of 5 stars Truck Farming - The Best Short Ever!.......2006-07-07

Of the single-disc releases, this is my favorite by far, and here's why. Sure, the MST3K stuff (bots, invention exchange, etc) is fine as usual, and the movie itself is not so bad (less gag-inducing than average, actually), and the commentary is witty and sharp as always. The real can't miss feature of this disc is the short film, Truck Farming, a documentary look at the gritty life of early industrial farming. The narration is beautifully upbeat, a curious contrast to the apparently depression-era (or close-following) images of workers, machinery, deforestation, and of course the vegetables, all the glorious fresh vegetables. Don't miss it!

4 out of 5 stars I Accuse The Pricetag.......2006-06-19

For an individual episode (with no extras), this DVD is overpriced at $18+. It's certainly a good episode and it's worth getting if you can find it used or discount. I got mine for just under $10 during an Amazon.com sale, which seems about right.

Otherwise I'd recommend one of the collected sets (four DVDs), which are better value for money, especially if you get them used. Of course, this episode isn't in any collected sets (yet), so if you liked this episode in particular, you've no choice.

5 out of 5 stars I accuse my parents.......2006-03-13
