Joan Crawford and Clark Gable were both in their young MGM prime when they suited up for Dancing Lady, the studio's big, shiny, silly reply to 42nd Street. Joan is a burlesque dancer (but mind you, serious artiste) when she is plucked from the ranks by a playboy, played by Franchot Tone, Crawford's future real-life hubby. Gable is the bluff, hard-driving theater director guiding a new Broadway musical that has room for one more chorus girl. Maybe. It all builds to the opening of the big show, and some utterly insane musical numbers including a Bavarian spectacle and the mind-bending "Rhythm of the Day." The saving grace in these scenes is that Fred Astaire, in his film debut, partners Joan onstage and sings a bit. The movie also has Nelson Eddy and soused one-liners from Robert Benchley, plus Ted Healy and His Stooges doing some surreal comedy. Vaudevillian Healy actually has a pretty big role here, but the Stooges (three fellows named Moe, Curly, and Larry) would go on to stardom without him. The movie may not be a great one, but it gives the sugary flavor of early-'30s MGM, and even a simple scene like a gym workout (with Gable and Crawford in especially sassy form) provides the pleasures of art deco production design and cool costumes. --Robert Horton

Description

A Broadway chorine (Joan Crawford) needs a little help with her hoofing, so her dance director (Clark Gable) gets an idea. A good idea. "Do you feel like going through that opening number with Mr. Astaire?" And Fred Astaire, making his screen debut, shows the lady how it's done. Three film icons give the backstage musical a jolt of superstar electricity in a song-, dance-, and romance-filled extravaganza featuring support by Nelson Eddy, Robert Benchley and The Three Stooges and tunes by Rodgers and Hart, Burton Lane, Dorothy Fields and more musical greats. Gable and Crawford had such stellar chemistry that MGM teamed them for eight movies. Here, as always, they have street-smart glamour and charisma to burn. Add Astaire's sophistication and Dancing Lady can take a well-deserved bow.

3 out of 5 stars All Star Cast.......2007-05-13

I have a lot of good impressions of "Dancing Lady" but I don't want to oversell it. After all, the plot's pretty obvious; we know who'll end up with who from the moment we see who every who is. There weren't any musical numbers that I'll be singing to myself later on. However, I was impressed by the number of stars in this production. The fact that Nelson Eddy and Fred Astaire played bit parts ought to say something. The Three Stooges were present as well although I would have preferred they had a little more screen time. The stars of the movie were stars of their day; Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, and Franchot Tone but there were also some other up-and-comers in Sterling Holloway and Eve Arden.

The musical numbers reminded me of the absurdity that Hollywood musicals of the 1930's got into when they showed "Theater Productions" in movies. The scene is always the same; a Broadway musical has its' opening night and everything hinges on how the new "star" handles his or her big chance. That's all well and good but the way the stage seems to expand way beyond the confines of a legitimate theater is mind-bogglying. There's a number in "Dancing Girl" where the core of the stage turns into a sort of flying carpet with Joan Crawford and Fred Astaire carefully continuing their dance routine. To pull that number off in a theater would have required something bigger than the Rose Bowl. Another neat trick had everyone and everything get "modernized" when crossing through a large portal in mid-stage. People's costumes changed as they waled through that entry, horse and carriage turned into limosine, etc. I guess back then it was a sort of "artistic license" but it looks odd to see it today. Most viewers probably have more sense than me and just enjoy the production without needing a justification.

When I was a teenager, Joan Crawford made a sort of "comeback" by playing bizzare roles in hatchet-murder "B" movies. It was nice to realize what a lovely, glamorous actress she was in her prime. Beyond all the "Mommy Dearest" there was a real star. I'm glad to have replaced all those negative images (even if I had to stretch my imagination in doing so).

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary time capsule.......2007-01-29

There is a lot going on here visually, musically and artistically- and much of it is specific to the style of the time -1933.

Most surreal is seeing the Three Stooges next to Joan Crawford and Fred Astaire. This was at MGM, before the boys went over to Columbia. There are a couple of other Stooge shorts on the disk- also made by MGM with Busby Berkely-type chorus girl shots! The production values were far more lavish than their Columbia shorts. Makes me wonder what they would have accomplished had they stayed at the bigger and richer studio.

Joan Crawford was hot! She looked good next to Gable, and it makes me wish they would release "Possessed" (1931). I would also like to see some of her other early films, including some of the silents, where she plays dancer/hottie.

5 out of 5 stars "My Dancing lady, There is nobody like you...".......2007-01-17

And no movie like this one! If you have never seen a Joan Crawford movie before, this is the one to see. Every one will love it,and there is something in it for everyone I promise...the suprisingly talented and moreover stunningly beautiful 1933 incarnation of Joan Crawford is one you wont believe. Joan is Janie Barlow;a street smart,no-nonsense, ambitious and beautiful aspiring dancer. She is determined to make herself succeed in this business, no matter what the pratfalls, waiting to catch a break and relying on her sheer will and hard work to dance her way to the top .....and "yes, it's GOT to be dancin!".Sound familair?
One night, the burelesque house where janie is dancing at is raided, and her indignation worsens when she gets put in the slammer, however she is delighted when rich playboy Todd Newton(husband number two,Franchot Tone)bails her out.But much like our Joanie, our Janie is no fool, and wholeheartedly insists she will pay him back with the cash and nothing else.Undeterred, she hikes it to Broadway "uptown where it's art" to get a hold of "Patch" Gallagher(Clark Gable)the shows cranky but equally no-nonsense producer.Janie knows early on she wants the part and the producer, but not if Todd has anything to say about it....perfection pretty much ensues in some of the memorable scenes I have ever seen ,beautiful cinematography and the direction is very clever especially during janie's relentless pursuit of "patch" early on in the movie.Although it was common for joan to portray a character like this in part to appeal to depression era audiences, it was the combination of her fierce independence and wise-cracking gusto that made this one work. Her sexual chemistry with Gable is so powerful, they not only made 7 more movies together, but you can feel it this radiate out of the tv 74 years later. This movie does have something for everyone... Fred Astaire in his movie debut makes a luminious vision dancing with joan/janie and LOOK CLOSELY and you will spot the munchkinland and Emerald City sets( during the Bavaria and Rythym of the Day sequences)which would be used 6 years later in The Wizard of Oz.Also of interest: this film is pre-code meaning there is sex, sex SEX..in a tasteful and funny manner ,of course.I I cannot say enough about this film... go watch it.

5 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL PRODUCTION THAT HAS EVERYTHING!!!!!.......2006-08-09

I was so impressed with this great production on DVD. Young, beautiful Joan Crawford is so talented ~ I had no idea. She is vivacious, sexy, dances, sings, dives and swims ~ she absolutely sparkles. Clark Gable is young, handsome, and shows off his athletic body in the gym. Fred Astaire is in his debut in this film where Joan and him dance together. There is also the Three Stooges, as well. It has great fun dialogue, is very technically modern for its time, extremely entertaining, fast paced, and an absolute joy to watch this CLASSIC film ~ WHAT A TREAT!! THEY SURE DON'T MAKE MOVIES LIKE THIS ANYMORE. YOU WILL LOVE IT AS I DO AND PLAY IT AGAIN AND AGAIN!!

4 out of 5 stars All singing, all dancing, all hokum!.......2006-08-06

Clark Gable may have been the right star at the wrong studio - just think what Warner Bros. could have done with him in the Thirties - but he still had enough star quality to overcome even the most dubious casting. Take Dancing Lady, MGM's take on Warners' backstage Busby Berkeley musicals. It's a terrific movie put together with no expense spared, but somehow Gable isn't the first name that springs to mind when you think of a musical director putting on a Broadway revue. But then Joan Crawford isn't the first name you'd think of for a downtown gal going from Burlesque to Broadway and exhibiting the singing ability of Lee Marvin and the dancing skills of a fugitive from a chain gang (there's a difference between dancing and just knowing the steps).

All clichés are present and correct, from Joan replacing an `untalented' star who can dance her off the screen to the chorus girls with great faces but horrendous voices. Somehow it doesn't matter: it's too much fun and too ridiculous for that, especially in the absurdly overproduced musical finale which would need a theatre the size of Times Square to stage (great lyrics too: "Here in Bavaria/We'll take good care of ya"). Franchot Tone provides the romantic rivalry, Fred Astaire the only discernible dancing ability. Far more enjoyable than it has any right to be.

There are a few minor print glitches in the first half hour, but otherwise this is a pretty good restoration.

3 out of 5 stars The men were all singing , "I wish I was in Dixie." .......2007-04-30

For obvious reasons. Barbara Stanwyck is Dixie Daisy, the headlining lady at the old opera theatre, turned burlesque house. She gets the close-ups & plenty of face time in this mediocre murder mystery. She is the only performer in this with a better than average performance. Nothing average about Stanwyck's acting. This movie stalls in several places as some really bad vadvillians get to do their bits. That apparently is part of the charm. They are supposed to be bad. Everybody is aspiring to move up to the big time. Dixie has competition from other "ladies" who resent her recent stardom. They are strangled by their own G-Strings. Dixie is the main suspect & she has motive. The actual murderer becomes quite evident & you will know that moment when you see it. Back stage scenes are fun but not particularly inspiring. Not a well known Stanwyck movie but it's worth it just for her.

5 out of 5 stars A back-stage seat to see that THIS is why Barbara Stanwyck is a star........2006-03-29

I have not always understood the appeal of Stanwyck as a star. She tended to have two channels, the stone cold witch in her film noir work, and in her comedies, the cold business woman with a melty heart.... both got very formulaic.
I believe that every actor or actress who "breaks out" into fame has one film that you can point to and say "THIS is why she is a star." LADY OF BURLESQUE is that film for Stanwyck. It has everything she is known for, plus a vaudevillian side that was not often seen in her other work. She really was an all round talent, a triple threat. She acts, she sings, she dances, and boys, she bumps and grinds. She's lovely and a tomboy. What a treat. It's all here.
What is even better is that this film has all that too. It is a backstage murder mystery set in the seedy world of Burlesque. It has realistic behind the scenes shots that have rarely been equaled. Backstage usually IS this run-down, even in the best theatres, and when you're waiting to go on, this IS what it looks like from backstage.
The murder mystery holds up, although the "princess" is simply a camp hoot, and it has humor throughout. A real treat about a time and type of theatre that is long gone.

IN A NUTSHELL:

How did this film get past the censors? Nevertheless, an excellent film featuring a very young and steamy Barbara Stanwyck -- 63 years ago!

WHAT "LADY OF BURLESQUE" STARRING BARBARA STANWYCK IS ALL ABOUT:

This dark comedy-drama-mystery, Directed by, William Wellman was also known as "Striptease Lady" or "The G-String Murders", based on the book of that title by Gypsy Rose Lee. Producer, Hunt Stromberg, who purchased the rights for the film, was also the Producer of "The Thin Man" film series. The atmosphere of this film did have a resemblence to that series, but "LADY OF BURLESQUE" is much grittier, and less class-conscious in every respect. Nevertheless, the melding of backstage atmosphere, and burlesque-vaudeville style, stage entertainment, gave the film an urgent immediacy, and a texture of surreal reality, which is hard to create, especially in the era of film censors. For those reasons, this film is rather special, and certainly worth a look. The bonus comes in the form of Barbara Stanwyck [Dixie Daisy] who plays the provocative headliner, and who comfortably goes through the film as scantily clad as a "James Bond Girl". Of course, the murder-mystery is set at the burlesque house itself, which works rather well, and eventually leads the police and Ms. Stanwyck to the killer.

BOTTOM LINE:

3 out of 5 stars Play it on the G-string.......2006-02-15

Since "Lady of Burlesque" is based on a Gypsy Rose Lee novel called the "G-String Murders," you can't exactly expect this to be too smart or classy.

But this old Barbara Stanwyck movie is kind of fun to watch -- not only is there a genuinely baffling murder mystery, but there are lots of over-the-top costumes, silly characters, and a street-smart heroine who doesn't let anyone push her around. Oh yes, and the guys will love the jiggle.

At the Grand Ol' Opry, Dixie Daisy (Barbara Stanwyck) is the star burlesque attraction -- she sings, dances, jiggles, and manages not to get embroiled in the backstage catfighting. But soon things take a nasty turn: snotty stripper Lolita is found -- poisoned and strangled with her own G-string. (What a way to go) Perhaps even worse, autocratic Russian diva Princess Nirvena returns to the stage, nudging Daisy off it.

Both the police and Dixie begin investigating who might have killed the dead woman. When Nirvena is found strangled onstage, the Ol' Opry faces indefinite closure. And Dixie begins to uncover a web of blackmail, adultery, suicide and family hatred -- and a very shocking reason why someone has been murdering the girls.

Despite being set in an old burlesque club, don't expect lots of skin. I've seen picnics with a higher sex factor. Instead, the filmmakers had more fun with the murder mystery angle, Stanwyck wittily rejecting a smooth Irish comedian, and the ambitious strippers brawling and verbally slicing each other. It's deliciously catty.

The murder mystery is a pretty solid one, with plenty of suspects and some police chases, only to lose steam near the finale. But the script is tight: the dialogue is as spicy as the 1940s censors would allow, and it's full of snappy one-liners("When I dress for a date with you, it'll be a suit of armor and brass knuckles!"). And the scriptwriters had some fun, with the comics frustrating the cops.

Barbara Stanwyck plays Lee's alter ego, and she does an excellent job. Her Daisy is a street-smart, independent girl who is still warm-hearted and loyal. A few characters -- like the idiot blonde Gee Gee (Iris Adrian) -- are more than a little annoying, but the majority of the supporting cast is solid.

Though "Lady of Burlesque" gets a bit silly at times, it has a solid cast and solid script, making for some fun light entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Crackling, Sparkling, Censor-Teasing Fun.......2005-07-21

Barbara Stanwyck was the leggiest, midrift-showin'est film diva kicking around in the post-Hayes Code thirties and forties. In the early forties, when the censors were at their heavy-handed meanest, Babs bared her waist in *The Lady Eve,* bared it again in *Ball of Fire,* and bared it again, gloriously, as the headlining stripper in *Lady of Burlesque.* It's almost as if, in Hollywood's golden era of faces, directors thought Babs needed a little help.

Whether she did or not, *Lady of Burlesque* crackles enough in Babs's song-and-dance routines to compensate for whatever the film's flaws, including the grainy picture and criminally poor sound quality. (NOTE: it is **ESSENTIAL** to get a recent DVD transfer--the 2002 is okay--if you want to hear a word.) Watch closely and you'll catch Babs busting out with moves rarely seen again until the 1980s. This dame was a ball of fire.

The mystery plot of *Lady of Burlesque* is almost an afterthought: a hackneyed, slangy, and thoroughly charming romp through every dime-novel cliché imaginable. Some old movies you watch because of their enduring significance; others you watch because you're feeling nostalgic. *Lady of Burlesque* clearly falls into the latter category: it's a two-fold antique that celebrates both 40s Hollywood and the earlier heyday of Burlesque theater. *Citizen Kane* it ain't, but it's as easy to love as a Sunday trek through a curio shop.

IN A NUTSHELL: 3 GREAT CLASSIC FILM-NOIR MURDER MYSTERIES FOR THE PRICE OF 1!

-----*- "D.O.A." - In my opinion the quintessential film-noir!

-----*- "LADY OF BURLESQUE" - How did this film get past the censors? Nevertheless, an excellent film featuring a very young and steamy Barbara Stanwyck -- 63 years ago!

-----*- "THE STRANGER" - Pits Orson Welles and Edward G. Robinson against one another, with Loretta Young wedged right in the middle. The theme involves Young's conscience as the means of providing a resolution to both her ethical dilemma and the film's. Welles also Directed and was a Screenwriter for this film that was nominated for Best Original Story in 1946 by the Academy.

REVIEWS FOR THE 3 FILMS ON THE "GREAT MYSTERY MOVIES" DVD:

--*- WHAT "D.O.A." STARRING EDMOND O'BRIEN IS ALL ABOUT:

Rarely, at my age, does a 5-star drama get past me that has been out for 57 years. Well this one did. Seeing it for the first time last week was a rare, refreshing treat.

After reading many of the fine reviews here, I became intrigued with what was described by many reviewers as "a strange noise", "whistle", or "music", every time Frank Bigelow [Edmond O'Brien] saw an attractive woman. I watched it alone, with my spouse, and with my daughter, and we all found it rather unsettling when indeed the strange music, like whistling glissandos, followed Frank Bigelow's stare toward young females in San Francisco. We believe that the strange sound was to show the contrast between Bigelow's original demeanor of just another "typical" guy out for some capricious fun in San Francisco and the one we saw later in the movie. Once he knew he was a walking dead man, this "glissando effect" was abruptly absent to show his new outlook and his maniacal focus on discovering who in fact had killed him. That's right, "who HAD killed him". That is what the movie is about -- Frank Bigelow's investigation of his own murder.

WOW!

Once the happy-go-lucky scenes passed early in the film, the scenes became very intense and the movie's pace really booked! Sub-plots and new co-stars like Luther Adler and Neville Brand were introduced and given three-dimensional characterizations through action, which is something to see. Edmond O'Brien very believably depicted a man who became strengthened by his freedom of fear of death, which made him into an almost-irresistible force. He was certainly a far cry from the milquetoast accountant out to sow a few wild oats during a trip to San Francisco before getting married as which he began the film. All of this intrigue happened in only 83 minutes. I have watched D.O.A. five times in the last 4 days. The only modern film that compares is "Point Blank" with Lee Marvin from 1967.

PARTIAL LIST OF THE CAST OF "D.O.A."

Edmond O'Brien - Frank Bigelow
Pamela Britton - Paula Gibson
Luther Adler - Majak
Beverly Campbell - Miss Foster
Lynne Baggett - Mrs. Philips
William Ching - Holliday
Henry Hart - Stanley Philips
Neville Brand - Chester

--*- WHAT "LADY OF BURLESQUE" STARRING BARBARA STANWYCK IS ALL ABOUT:

This dark comedy-drama-mystery, Directed by, William Wellman was also known as "Striptease Lady" or "The G-String Murders", based on the book of that title by Gypsy Rose Lee. Producer, Hunt Stromberg, who purchased the rights for the film, was also the Producer of "The Thin Man" film series. The atmosphere of this film did have a resemblence to that series, but "LADY OF BURLESQUE" is much grittier and less class-conscious in every way possible. Nevertheless, the melding of backstage atmosphere and burlesque-vaudeville style, stage entertainment, gave the film an urgent immediacy, and a texture of surreal reality, which is hard to create, especially in the era of film censors.

PARTIAL LIST OF THE CAST OF THE "LADY OF BURLESQUE"

Barbara Stanwyck - Dixie Daisy
Michael O'Shea - Bitt Brannigan
J. Edward Bromberg - S.B. Foss
Iris Adrian - Gee Gee Graham
Marion Martin - Alice Angel
Gloria Dickson - Dolly Baxter
Pinky Lee - Mandy
Victoria Faust - Lolita La Verne

--*- WHAT "THE STRANGER" STARRING, ORSON WELLES IS ALL ABOUT:

Orson Welles plays a college professor, [Charles Rankin]. He lives and works in a rural Connecticut town and is about to be married to Mary (Loretta Young), a truly wonderful young woman who's dad just happens to be a U.S. Supreme Court judge.

Sometime after the war during a sunny afternoon, a shaky German named Meineke [Konstantin Shayne] arrives in town and soon turns up at Rankin's home where Mary is hanging drapes. Rankin, soons arrives and appears upset by Meineke's presence. Not wanting to speak to this "German" in front of Mary, Rankin summons the stranger for a walk in the woods. There we learn that professor Rankin is actually the infamous Nazi war criminal Franz Kindler. Conscience-stricken by his own criminal wartime activities, Meineke has come to Connecticut to plead with his former master, Kindler, who we know as Rankin, to do the right thing and turn himself in.

The professor, however, has not seen the light, and responds by brutally slaying his old comrade. However, their is a loose-end for Rankin [aka-Kindler]. Mr. Wilson, [Edward G. Robinson] a War crimes investigator that deliberately freed Meineke to lead him to Kindler [aka- Rankin] pays a visit to the whole town [it seems], posing as an antiques dealer. For the entire film, Wilson's investigation and Mary's conscience are closing in on Rankin [aka-Kindler] and eventually led to the films climax.

CAST OF "THE STRANGER"

Orson Welles - Franz Kindler/Prof. Charles Rankin
Edward G. Robinson - Wilson
Loretta Young - Mary Longstreet
Philip Merivale - Judge Longstreet
Martha Wentworth - Sara
Richard Long - Noah Longstreet
Byron Keith - Dr. Jeff Lawrence

BOTTOM LINE: SURE, THE COPYRIGHTS EXPIRED, BUT THAT HAPPENS IN BUSINESS AND WHEN IT DOES WE THE CONSUMER SOMETIMES BENEFIT!

ABOUT THE DVD:

The only shortcoming was a small glitch in "D.O.A." which appears like a fast-flutter that stops after a second. It repeats about once every 6-8 minutes during that film for its entirety. That was the only glitch among the three films, but it occurs in film that I bought this DVD for!

Customer Reviews:
