Just When You Thought Wrestling Couldn't Get Worse..........2004-12-17
I found the book "Kaiju Big Battel" to be modestly amusing with the bizarre cast of characters, strange rules, odd biographies, and unusual awards such as the coveted "Golden Banana Award For Tag team Excellence." With that in mind I paid $5.00 for a used copy of this DVD, and have rarely overpaid as badly in my life.
This is the least amusing, most amateurishly made, un-funny DVD in recent memory, which is a shame as the material from the book could have been funny. This is not even funny in an "Ed Wood" way; it is just plain bad. It does have extras, but you may find, as I did, they are up to the level of the remainder of the DVD.
On a positive note, some of the "commercials" are actually not painful to watch, although there is little they can do to save this film from festering in its own squalid wretchedness. Save your money and just read the book instead: it is much more entertaining, but then again so was "The World of Dung."
Brilliant Mindless Humor.......2004-11-25
Think, power rangers meets pokemon meets WWF. Yes the in-fight commentary could be funnier but the ridiculously bad effects and crudely assembled costumes further reiterate how silly some of Kaiju's serious counterparts really are. The whole DVD is worth owning just for the Silver Potato montage at the end...
Buyer Beware! And Prepare to be Disappointed! And Angry!.......2004-05-13
First of all, let me say that I'm a big fan of City-Stomping Monsters like Godzilla, Gamera and their various friends. So when I saw the package design and clever copy on the Kaiju Big Battel DVD, I thought it could be a lot of fun. Afterall, who doesn't like the idea of giant homemade monsters crushing cheap cardboard buildings in a fun and comedic way? Well, DON'T BE DECEIVED! Kaiju Big Battel is nothing more than 60 minutes of some bad cameraman's home video of the worst kind of amatuerish pro-wrester wannabes performing for an audience who are so bored, a 6 month coma would be a welcome change of scenery. Add to this the inane color commentary that is as clever as a dirt clod, and you begin to realize the tremendous waste of time this title is (btw - if you want truly funny writing in this genre, tune to Most Extreme Elimination Challenge on Spike TV). The "commentators" on Kaiju Big Battel just run off at the mouth trying to say something with any semblance of comedic merit, but the result is more like listening to that kid in 7th grade who droned on an on about why Captain Picard is better than Captain Kirk. Nothing is scripted, nothing is funny, and nothing will get your ten dollars back. If you've ever had to sit through a wedding video of someone you don't know, then you have a good idea of what it's like watching Kaiju Big Battel. The only credit I can give the producers of this DVD is that they actually got it published and on store shelves. I suspect that all the glowing reviews you find here have been written by the producers' friends, if not by them themselves.
Here are my final words; buy this DVD and live to reget it. As for me, I'm trying to find a way to exchange it as defective and then return it for a refund.

Dr. Cube is top of cool.......2004-01-23
Bein' the type of person who enjoys watching "so-bad-it's-good" schlock TV shows and movies, I headed into the local indie rental joint in search of somethin' that had the potential to become the next "trash classic" to adorn my video shelf. A few minutes into my search, I discovered this curiosity in a far corner, its bright yellow cover box standing out in a sea of black. I picked it up and gave the cover liner a glance. Judging from the action depicted on the front and the blurb on the back, Kaiju Big Battel appeared to have just what I was looking for in an "underground" presentation. Fortunately, I wasn't disappointed-- this cheesy mixture of guys dressed in foam rubber Godzilla suits and quasi-hardcore/backyard-style wrestling (complete with bitter rivalries, hokey storylines, and miniature buildings in the ring the combatants can use to smash their foes with or piledrive 'em into) made for a pretty entertaining evening of smiles and laughter.
While most of the rasslin' maneuvers and skills displayed in this presentation might not be up to the WWE's standards, I found many of them surprisingly complex and well executed. I was also wowed by how well most of the hits "connected", and how well the victims "sold" the hits. There's even a few good "bumps" (falls outta the ring) here 'n there that looked better than half the ones I usually see on WWE Raw!
Also included among the battels are pre- and post-match commentary by host/ring announcer Louden Noxious and referee Jingi. Their schtick consists of discussing the merits of each match's combatants at the Kaiju broadcast studio, cutting to the bout and voicing their thoughts as the match plays, then cutting back to the studio to announce they'll be right back after a few commercials. After a couple weird-@$$ commercial spots, it's on to the next battel. Well, except for after the last match, which cuts to an unbelievably long closing credits sequence (with a few "gag" credits here 'n' there) crawling along the bottom of the screen like a cable news channel breaking report. Above the crawl are outtakes and alternate angles of various scenes from the presentation, as well as a song from an alternative-sounding rock group.
This disc's supplemental materials are pretty sparse. Aside from the show & commercials themselves, all that's included are text profiles of various kaiju combatants, and the fictional history of Kaiju Big Battel. 'Course, if ya wanna get really anal-retentive, I suppose the liner notes sheet that plugs the Kaiju website and merchandise could be considered "supplemental material", as could the bonus Dr. Cube fridge magnet. But in spite of the less-than-extensive extras, I found this platter interesting enough to prompt me to purchase my own copy of it so I can watch it on occasion-- and my geekin' buddies can borrow it whenever they feel too cheap to go to the video joint and rent it...
