The Music Man was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut--both live and on film--as "Professor" Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the "think system." But it's the part Preston was born to play and the one for which he will always be best remembered. Composer Meredith Willson based The Music Man on his own small-town Midwestern boyhood, circa 1912, a quasi-mythical place where the old-maid librarian looks and sings like Shirley Jones. The boy himself is an adorable Ron Howard, lisp-singing "Gary, Indiana." Willson's entire score, featuring a combination of what are now standards, such as "Goodnight My Someone" and "Till There Was You" and show-specific numbers ("Trouble," "76 Trombones"), is never less than infectious. This dazzling special edition is also as bright and sunny as any 4th of July in Iowa could ever hope to be. --Robert Windeler
Description
Let 76 trombones lead the big parade from the Great White Way into your home. It's the Music Man, the screen version of one of Broadway's all-time blockbusters, a skyburst of Americana as irresistible as 4th of July fireworks. Robert Preston and Shirley J Year: 1962
Customer Reviews:
The Music Man.......2007-07-02
This exuberant, energetic adaptation of Meredith Wilson's hit Broadway musical is a bona fide marvel thanks to Robert Preston's virtuosic turn as the ultra-charming swindler. Homing in on small-town America in 1912, "Music Man" mixes nostalgic sentiment with real-world woes, memorably in the person of Ron Howard, who plays Marian's sullen younger brother Winthrop. Comedian Buddy Hackett adds levity as Hill's goofy sidekick, while Jones is a perfectly prim counterweight to Preston's engaging rogue. And let's not forget the songs: "Till There Was You" and the rollicking "76 Trombones" will leave you humming long after the lights go up.
Great film. Poor picture quality.......2007-06-18
This is a classic musical film and I have nothing but glowing things to say about it, however on my 50" plasma television, the picture quality is sub par and I would love to see it remastered.
Fantastic!!.......2007-06-12
I always enjoy the show but especially with no commercials and watching the way they do the "Seventy-Six Trombones". Thanks. Kimberly.
the music man.......2007-05-26
This has always been one of my favorites. Great music, romance and an ever immportant lesson on life. Can never be replaced by the Disney version that came out a few years ago. Original is always good.

This musical simply had it all: Humor, drama, romance, great music, and final redemption/ultimate happiness for the con man!

A grandly entertaining, old-fashioned adventure based on the Rudyard Kipling short story, The Man Who Would Be King is the kind of rousing epic about which people said, even in 1975, "Wow! They don't make 'em like that anymore!" When director John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen) first started trying to make the film, with Gable and Bogart, the project was derailed by the latter's death. It was a few decades before Huston was able to finally realize his dream movie--and with an unimprovable cast. Sean Connery and Michael Caine are, respectively, Daniel Dravot and Peachy Carnahan, a pair of lovably roguish British soldiers who set out to make their fortunes by conning the priests of remote Kafiristan into making them kings. It's a rollicking tale, an epic satire of imperialism, and the good-natured repartee shared by Caine and Connery is pure gold. In today's screen adventures, humor is usually imposed on the material by a writer or director trying to make some kind of cleverly self-aware comment ("Hey, we know it's a movie!"), but that sort of jokiness can create so much ironic distance that it pushes the audience right out of the picture. Huston lets the humor emerge naturally from the characters, for whom we wind up caring more deeply than we ever expected. The digital video disc includes a wonderful documentary on the making of the film. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
ITS A CLASSIC!!!.......2007-06-27
Sean Connery? Good! Micheal Caine? Good! and with a Gurkha! My Dad summed it up one school night in my youth. "Your staying up for this one son, its a classic!" Two retired British Army NCO's, Mason's, Alexander the Great, Khafiristan, Martini rifles, and did I mention the Gurkha? This movie brought a fine Rudyard Kipling tale to life with all the action and adventure, gain and loss that you can ask for. "Let's go find safety in battle." is in my top ten of best movie lines. I recommend this movie for anyone who stares off in the distance from time to time wondering if there are any adventures left out there.
Top boys own yarn.......2007-06-06
This great film based on the Book by Kipling is a superbly made ripping yarn. Two rogue British ex-soldiers decide they would like to take over a country. This of course isn't as simple as it seems, even some 100+ years ago.
How they go about this is portrayed brilliantly by Caine and Connery. Made a few years after his last Bond film, Connery dominates the screen the whole time, but Michael Caine pushes him close and produces an at times marvellous comedic performance. I am sure Caine was influenced indirectly and directly by John Huston in this regard.
The other reason for this films greatness is of course John Huston. The direction is a lesson to all modern directors on how to grip an audiences attention whithout the need for CGI or an explosion every five minutes. Full credit to however was responsible for the sound as this makes a huge contribution towards the end.
Somehow I had missed this movie until this year. Now I've seen it I want to see it again and again. Strongly recommended.
A 'Treasure' in movies..........2007-05-03
This adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's wonderful short story has a permanent home in my DVD cabinet. It's a tale of adventure, friendships, differences between beliefs and cultures, dreams, and a cautionary lesson in greed combined with arrogance. When Daniel Drivot (Sean Connery) and Peachy Carnahan (Michael Caine) decide to give up their con games in India and head for Kafiristan, they feel it is their fate. They've heard the high mountain country is full of riches, but nearly die getting there. In another twist of fate, Daniel is given a god status and awarded the god's riches. The loot is beyond his wildest dreams, but rather than go home with his friend rich, Daniel is intoxicated by his power and unwilling to give it up. His arrogance threatens to end a long friendship, and his life.

The Man Who Would Be King .......2007-04-11
This is one of the best Adventure films I have ever seen. Wonderous, full of Humor and Action. Great performances of Sean Connery and Michael Caine. And all that before the Golden Age of special (computer generated) effects. A masterpiece which I never tire of seeing. And every time the ending makes me feel a bit sad and feeling sorry for Daniel and Peachy. They deserve better.
Calling for a new DVD issue.......2007-03-10
More years ago than I'd like to remember (okay, it was 1983), in my first job out of college, I compiled and edited (among many other things) the TV listings "picks" for a weekly regional music/arts newpspaper. I recall the publisher, an aging hippie, carping about my recommendation of a TV broadcast of a movie based on a short story by an alleged apologist for British imperialism, Rudyard Kipling. Kipling may be un-PC these days, but I wonder if my long-ago publisher actually read "The Man Who Would Be King" or saw the wonderful 1975 movie that director John Huston fashioned from it. If he did, he might have realized it was a clear-eyed cautionary tale, not a celebration of British incursion. "TMWWBK" is one of those "they don't make 'em like that anymore" near-classics, and watching it you're glad that Huston had to wait so long to make it, because with all due respect to the late great director, his earlier choices for the leading roles (Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster and Paul Newman among them) would not have worked nearly as well as the team of Sean Connery and Michael Caine. The two actors bring authority, humor, and not a little poignancy to their roles as ex-soldiers who decide to journey to a remote, hostile Asian land and set themselves up as its rulers.
Watching the DVD again recently, I was reminded of what a strong impact "TMWWBK" made on me as a teenager, and it has stood the test of time better than many highly-regarded movies of its day. However, my enthusiasm is muted by the fact that the DVD itself hasn't held up nearly as well. It was issued circa 1997, when so-called "flippers" (DVDs that made you play both sides to see the entire movie, like an LP with awkward side breaks) were not unheard-of, even with flicks that ran for only two hours like this one. Oswald Morris' handsome Panavision cinematography translated pretty cleanly to silver disc (thankfully, it's letterboxed rather than pan-and-scan), but after a decade's advancements in DVD technology, a remastering would produce a sharper picture (and would probably improve the lackluster transfer of the soundtrack, monaural though it is). Double-sided or no, the disc is very short on extras--and as has been noted elsewhere, a key moment near the end of the movie has been inexplicably deleted, or more accurately replaced with a character's narration delivered to the camera rather than as a voice-over of this sequence. The movie deserves far better, and it's a shame that this 10-year-old "flipper" hasn't been superceded. The high rating I'm giving this disc is for the movie itself, not for the indifferent DVD, which will have to suffice until, I hope, a better one comes along.

Rain Man is the kind of touching drama that Oscars are made for--and, sure enough, the film took Academy honors for best picture, director, screenplay, and actor (Dustin Hoffman) in 1988. Hoffman plays Raymond, an autistic savant whose late father has left him $3 million in a trust. This gets the attention of his materialistic younger brother, a hot-shot LA car dealer named Charlie (Tom Cruise) who wasn't even aware of Raymond's existence until he read his estranged father's will. Charlie picks up Raymond and takes him on a cross-country journey that becomes a voyage of discovery for Charlie, and, perhaps, for Raymond, too. Rain Man will either captivate you or irritate you (Raymond's sputtering of repetitious phrases is enough to drive anyone crazy), but it is obviously a labor of love for those involved. Hoffman had been attached to the film for many years, as various directors and writers came and went, but his persistence eventually paid off--kind of like Raymond in Las Vegas. Look for director Barry Levinson in a cameo as a psychiatrist near the end of the film. --Jim Emerson
Description
Dustin Hoffman is a 'triumph (People) in an Oscar(r)-winning* role, and Tom Cruiseis 'terrific (ABC Radio) in a film that's fascinating, touching and full of smart surprises (Newsweek)! Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) has just discovered he has an autistic brother named Raymond (Hoffman) and is now taking him on the ride of his life. Or is it the other way around? From his refusal to drive on major highways to a four minutes to Wapner meltdown at an Oklahoma farmhouse, Raymond first pushes hot-headed Charlie to the limits of his patience and then pulls him completely out of his self-centered world! But what began as an unsentimental journey for the Babbitt brothers becomes much more than the distance between two placesit's a connection between two vastly different people and a poignant, profound and powerful film (Joel Siegel, ABC-TV)! *1988: Actor
Customer Reviews:
Depicts the world of Autism!.......2007-05-20
Very distinct and never attempted story line. In most part of the movie Dustin Hoffman lived as an autistic character, but some places he overacted. Everything was fine in the movie, but the only concern is, would Tom Cruise show the same affection, to his brother, if he was not good at numbers, instead behaved more like a regular autistic patient?
Tom started liking Dustin, only after he came to know that Dustin had some extraordinary number skills, which helped him in clearing his debts. This clearly sheds the light on Tom's selfishness. Any how almost all the people in the world, try to make fortune out of others, so his demeanor doesn't surprise me.
The story, character selection and the screenplay make it a definitely a worth watching movie!
Mixed Metaphors.......2007-04-14
The first thing that pleased me about this purchase was the new cover, synchronously both the same but not the same as the original. Gone was the huge tree-lined drive of the institution from which Charlie was springing his autistic brother, and in its stead appeared a country road underfoot and a beautiful blue sky towering above them, stretching forever and ever.
The Internet is overloaded with reviews of the movie Rain Man that have missed the main point of the movie, but the Special Edition of the movie will at the very least have put paid to most of them. Just watch the featurette. It lasts only a few minutes but explains all that had hitherto been missing from those tens of thousands of words.
I remember watching the movie on its release and reading in the acknowledgements mention of the role that the autistic society of America played. Yet only concentrating on this and the fact that Hoffman won the Oscar for his role as the autistic Ray (not Cruise who played his brother Charlie) has led many to falsely assume this movie is about Raymond, and thus autism. The producer sets this sidetrack straight in the featurette when he states that the movie is not about Raymond but Charlie, as he is the one who changes.
Films communicate their stories through the metaphors they contain. Once you can understand the metaphors, you can understand the movie. By realizing that autism is the vehicle and Charlie's change is the tenor, we can finally get the story's meaning the right way around.
To confirm this fact, Tom Cruise comments that Charlie learns to live life again through his brother, Raymond, who is autistic, and that Charlie is an "emotional autistic". Most films' appeal is a character with strong emotions who changes. Although Charlie changes, Ray is not emotional and does not change. But it was Hoffman who won the Oscar for Best Actor, not Cruise, and he had even suggested that Ray be autistic for the final shooting script. The subject is Charlie's change which we measure by Ray's lack of one. The main metaphor is autism, more than the car or even the journey. Ray's immutability is the yardstick that allows us to savor all the more Charlie's transformation into a feeling human being.
The final word from the featurette must go to Hoffman as he made the movie such a major part of himself and vice versa. He spells out his own heart by explaining that, when we meet people whose lives are touched by autism, we can't help but to be affected by them. And we hope that if we could just give them enough love they might somehow be released from their condition. The movie wanted the audience to somehow feel the same way.
Charlie has to travel the breadth of America to find out that, though that's impossible, trying to do so can help us heal ourselves. And finally, returning to the box cover, another often missed facet of the movie is also made clear - from the puff of sand when Charlie u-turns at the news of his father's death, through the dead roses, dried up pool, then the rain that weeps into it like tears, the background also transmogrifies as the sky expands in ever deeper shades of blue, love blooming in the gorgeous greening, and the high point, the fountains shooting high into the sky outside the casino hotel after Charlie's new family, Ray and Suzanna are all reunited.
CLASSIC! ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS!.......2007-03-27
I must say I wanted to hate this film after they robber Hoffman of an Oscar for Tootsie. I still think it was harder for Hoffman to pull off playing a woman, but this is another great film and a incredible acting job for Hoffman. Cruise does an excellent job as the self-centered brother too. This should not be missed! DVD 2 disc edition is excellent.
Rain Man.......2007-03-08
I have been looking for this movie for a long time. My daughter and I love it. It was my niece who told me to go online to Amazon, so I am very greatful to her, because I never thought to do it. I gave it to my daughter, and she was really happy.
Thanks
P. Myers
A Good Movie.......2007-02-12
I purchased this movie because my son had just finished reading "The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night", and he made comments about the boys math skills. I suggested he watch Rain Man, it has funny moments and interesting look at how someone's life can change. After watching it again I got much more out of it.

Meredith Willson's musical masterpiece is such an American classic, it deserves to be known by each new generation--and this sprightly TV-movie version spiffs it up nicely for the young folk. It's a testament to Willson's achievement that this 2003 production can survive a casting flub: the usually engaging Matthew Broderick's low-key charm is an exact mismatch for the brassy energy of traveling salesman Professor Harold Hill. When Broderick sings the words "thundering, thundering!" from "Seventy-Six Trombones," he sounds as though he's murmuring, murmuring. But he wears well (especially in a nifty "Marian the Librarian"), and he has lyrical support from Kristin Chenoweth's crystal-clear singing. Director Jeff Bleckner has a maddening tendency to cut away from the crucial moment of a scene, but the atmosphere of small-town Iowa is ably created. Adding zip is Molly Shannon, hilarious as chief busybody Mrs. Shinn. In short, the "Think System" still works. --Robert Horton
Description
From the executive producers of the Academy Award(R)-winning musical CHICAGO (Best Picture, 2002) comes a fresh interpretation of an all-time classic. Featuring some of the most beloved songs in history, THE MUSIC MAN "is impossible to resist" raves TV Guide. Con man "Professor" Harold Hill (Tony Award winner Matthew Broderick, 1995 Best Actor, Musical) arrives in River City, Iowa, promising that he can teach the small town's children how to play in a magnificent marching band. It's all part of a big swindle, but falling in love with the town librarian (Kristin Chenoweth) wasn't part of the deal. Also starring Victor Garber and Molly Shannon, THE MUSIC MAN is an irresistible production the whole family will enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Stick with Robert Preston.......2007-07-03
Ugh. Low energy, unflattering tight shots which provide details of Ms. Chenowith's face which I'm comfortable not knowing about, including a huge bubble of saliva at the end of My White Night. The choreography is pedestrian ("walk-ography") and there is no momentum. The original movie with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones is definitive; I would advise sticking to it. This version only points up the magnificence of Robert Preston in the original.
The Music Man (TV Film).......2007-06-08
I was shocked. This production is absolutely adorable. I am a big fan of the original and this cast does itself proud. Matthew Broderick is lively and believable. Kristin Chenoweth is beyond wonderful. A definite must-have addition to any family DVD collection.
An awsome family movie!.......2007-04-13
I love this movie. Matthew Brodderick dose great in his roll as Professor Harold Hill, and Kristin Chenoweth lets her beautiful voice ring in "'Till There Was You". My absolute favorite though is Victor Garber as the hilariously tongue tied Mayor Shinn. With just a few differences in story line from the original, it is a great movie for the entire family, and all those out there that love music
Skip it...!.......2007-04-01
Meredith Wilson was a genius...his book and score of The Music Man are incomparable. This boring, badly acted remake does the almost impossible...it makes The Music Man look bad.
For sheer joy, and an outstanding, joyful version of The Music Man, see Robert Preston and Shirley Jones in the 1962 film version.
Skip this one...by all means.
The Music Man is the man!.......2007-03-26
Going into this film, I had a lot of expectations. I love musicals and I had heard so much about this one. While it will not break my top three favorite musicals being "Rent", "West Side Story", and "Pippin". It will at least be in my top ten favorite favorite musicals, if not my top five. And not that anyway cares but that kind of a tag, I don't put on every musical I have seen. Now, I should be clear and tell you folks I have not seen the 1962 version of Music Man and I don't think I will because I don't like to compare between two interperations of work. The staging of this musical was very well done espically for a TV Musical. Matthew Broderick as Harold Hill is the real heart of this piece. While Kristin Chenoweth's Marian is the soul. I had heard through some people that this is along with "Oklahoma", "Singing in The Rain", and "West Side Story" is the groundwork for the american musical and they would be correct. You have your love songs, your assemble rousing song, and your comedic silly song. If your classist and real stickler about musicals and Matthew Broderick's ability to remake musicals (i.e. The Producers which I haven't seen yet.) Don't buy this DVD. If you have not seen any version of The Music Man and want to compare please do that at your own risk, because most times what'll happen is you'll either hate one version and love the other one or despise both of them (which I haven't seen or heard people say in any musical films yet.) If you're looking for a good musical comedy please buy this DVD and if you're wanting to expose your kids to the wonderful genre of musicals, this one of the better ones to start with. In closing, the strongest non singing role in this film will probably go to Victor Garber who plays Mayor Shinn. You will see why...

In an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle, Monty Python veteran John Cleese wrote this slapstick farce for the purpose of reuniting the comedic cast of A Fish Called Wanda. Fierce Creatures is all about a media mogul (Kevin Kline) who owns a London zoo. He demands that the park raise more profit, so the new zoo director (Cleese) orders that only dangerous animals be displayed in order to maximize ticket sales. In a dual role, Kline also plays the mogul's son, who plans to run the zoo with the help of displaced employees (including Michael Palin) and zoo programmer Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis). The situation lends itself to comedic confusion and split-second timing, and for a few good laughs the film is a pretty safe bet. It's not as hilarious as A Fish Called Wanda (that's a pretty tall order), but Cleese knows comedy, and his efforts are worth a look. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Fierce is Funny.......2007-05-16
I really enjoyed "Fierce Creatures." It's funny, with a wonderful cast! If you liked "A Fish Called Wanda," you'll like this one, too. John Cleese,Michael Palin,Kevin Kline, and Jamie Lee Curtis are hilarious together. This isn't a sequel to "A Fish..," but the storyline and cast interaction make it just as enjoyable.
Another fine movie from the Monty Python bunch.......2007-05-07
If you like Monty Python Movies, then this will be a tad bit more understated but a really good movie. This movie reunited the cast from A Fish Called Wanda to set us back in merry ol' England as a tycoon buys a zoo with the idea to turn 20% profits or sell it off to the highest bidder. This movie combines classic sexual situation, murder, theft, and the cutest little animals you ever seen. A must see.
funny for John Cleese fans.......2007-02-21
It's a cute movie. Funny for John Cleese fans. My fiance loves Cleese and Cleese was funny in this movie
Man is the Fiercest Creature of all.......2007-01-03
Funnier even than A Fish Called Wanda. Great group of actors and great group of "fierce"creatures.
What a funny movie!.......2006-11-11
This movie is hilarious. It is much funnier than the movie that preceded it, "A Fish Called Wanda." We have watched it several times, and I think that it has something for everyone in the family. There are some adult situations, but they are not necessarily understandable to small children. I would suggest watching it first without them, however. John Cleese is a gem in almost anything he does, and he doesn't disappoint here. Jamie Lee Curtis is terrific and extremely funny. Kevin Kline--well I didn't like his character much, but he excelled in his portrayal. The supporting cast was great and the backdrop of the zoo is wonderful. Watch for the scene with Jamie Lee Curtis and a gorilla. It certainly brought tears to my eyes. And I just love happy endings.

Adapted from a popular French comedy-thriller, The Man with One Red Shoe follows a concert violinist (Tom Hanks) used as a patsy in a conflict between two rival factions of the CIA. Singled out at the airport solely because he's wearing mismatched shoes, Hanks is henceforth believed to be a mole with important information; a rogue crew of agents follows him, searches his apartment, and even seduces him in order to find out what he knows. At the same time, loyal agents--who also believe he's a mole--follow and protect him from predation by the rogues. Lori Singer plays a beautiful blonde spy with a conscience and an astonishing backless dress; Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, and Edward Herrmann are agents trying to second-guess each other; Jim Belushi plays Hanks's best friend, a jealous percussionist, and Carrie Fisher plays Belushi's wife, a flautist who's infatuated with Hanks and wants him to make some jungle love. Hanks plays it straight and is reliably pleasant. In the hands of Hitchcock, this might have generated some real suspense; as it is, it's amusing with some good twists, some weak gags, and one remarkable bicycle stunt. --Bret Fetzer
Description
In this hilarious undercover comedy, violinist Richard Drew (Hanks) is mistaken for a spy after wearing one red shoe and triggers a game of rivalry between two feuding CIA bosses (Charles Durning, Dabney Coleman). Though Richard is mugged, shot at and chased, he remains unaware that he is an object of suspicion and even falls in love with the agent (Lori Singer) who's trailing him. Meanwhile, his friend's (Jim Belushi) love-starved wife (Carrie Fisher) has designs on him as well.

Relaxing comedy.......2007-04-15
This is a comedy that I like to see once in a while to relax!
My all time favorite comedy.......2007-01-27
Don't know why, but I come back to this film whenever I want a genuine laugh. It has all the elements here. Mistaken identity, goofy CIA agents, paranoid friend, sexy starlets. It's just a good comedy. Tom Hanks was just getting full recognition when this one came along. Nice to look back at his quirky comedies.
The man with one red shoe.......2006-11-06
Great movie and it was a pleasure buying it through Amazon.
Very Funny early Tom Hanks movie (before he sold out to Hollywood)!.......2006-09-19
Dir.: Stan Dragoti (or as some might call
him, Mr. Cheryl Tiegs)...Starring: Tom
Hanks, Lori Singer, Dabney Coleman, Jim
Metzman...[he played 'Oi-ving', the door
man in Crocodile Dundee I]. A fine remake
of the 1970 French comedy, 'The Tall Blonde
Man with one shoe.' Hnaks plays slighty flaky
classical musician who gets mistaken for agent
which invovles all sorts of chases lead by
hyper ambitious Dabney Coleman in one of his
best roles of the '80's! Singer and Hanks are
very good in here. If Tom Hanks had stayed with
comedy, he would have been maybe the best. Sigh...
three stooge version.......2006-05-03
This is the second remake of the original French version from around 1970. This one is the worst of the three. The gags remind me of the Three Stooges movies. They are overdone and drawn out to pad the movie to 90 minutes.

Customer Reviews:
funny movie!.......2007-05-13
saw this movie one saturday morning on Comedy Central and it had me cracking up! i HAD to add it to my collection!
Bored Me To Tears.......2006-01-31
I admit, I only watched half this movie. I couldn't take any more. The acting was campy and over-the-top (even for an 80's movie, this beat them all). The plot seemed silly and ridiculous. I didn't even really care that much for the characters in this movie enough to find out how everybody made out in the end, though I'm sure I can figure it out easily enough.
I might be missing something because everybody else on Amazon.com is raving about it. I just don't get it.
One thing I don't agree with was people's review of how this was a family film. I may not know what qualifies as a family film but with all the swearing and innuendo in the movie I wouldn't let my son watch it.
a true family movie.......2005-03-29
This movie is a one-of-a-kind. Never again will you see this kind of inoccent comedy which is very funny. I remember seeing it when younger, and now my daughter has me seeing it 20 times a day. I still watch it each time and laugh. Mandel and lloyd are hilarious in this 80's film. Great for kids.My daughter is 3 and shes hooked on BOBO.....
DON'T CHEAT YOURSELF BUY THIS AWESOME DVD - MOVIE, .......2005-03-24
This is a totally awesome movie not because of awesome special effects, not because it is particularly well written, not because it is at all believable because trust me it's not very realistic at all. The Walk Like A Man works because, it is extremely funny and it has an awesome message. I am very disabled and this movie shows why it is ok to be different. The movie shows how sometimes what people see as different is in many ways better than what most people call "normal". For all Walk Like A Man Lacks in traditional movie POP and FIZZ it makes up for in its message of heart. The movie is more slap stick comedy than serious. If you want a more serious Boy Raised by Wolves Tale I would suggest LUCAN.
This is a movie to watch if you still have the heart of child like innocence and you are feeling down and just wanting to feel good afterwards. This is not the movie for those who want something deep, meaningful and spiritual. Walk Like A Man is an hour or so of weird fun with an awesome message at the end. I brought a copy of Walk Like A Man from Amazon.COM on DVD and at 46 I still enjoy watching. OyVey who knows if I will ever grow up AND LOVING IT!
TWO THUMBS UP!!.......2004-09-19
This is my first time watching this...I'm 22 years old and I absolutely LOVED THIS MOVIE!
Howie Mandel is VERY, VERY, VERY funny and if you've seen it, you can back me up on this..
If you haven't seen it...you are really missing a treat of a film...you got Howie Mandel and Christopher Llyod in tha same movie...you know it's going to be funny...
WATCH THIS MOVIE...I don't know if it's in the stores...but I'm watching it on my Directv and I'm still watching it as I write this review..this movie is Very, Very, Good...TWO THUMBS UP!

Customer Reviews:
Clever movie... a Must have for Jon Bongiovi fans!.......2005-08-06
I agree with the positive reviews on this one. The plot and humor are clever and Jon plays Robin Grange well - he makes a devious character quite likeable. If you want to see a lot of Jon, you shouldn't pass on this movie. It took me forever to get through the entire movie because I kept rewinding certain parts where Jon looked especially yummy or said something rather funny. A lot of dry wit and a nice touch of suspense and irony at the end. Well worth the money. Some nudity, unfortunately, not Jon's (grin).
Bon Jovi is perfectly cast.......2005-03-25
Bon Jovi may not be a Shakespearean actor, but he has chops enough to play a smarmy American that easy to hate, and even easier to envy. The film may be nothing more a series of ruses, but it is fun to watch the actors work. Thandie Newton is particularly good as the object of the playwright's affection, who nearly succumbs to the wicked charms of the awful American. Bon Jovi oozes with fake charm and star quality persona, which is exactly what the role called for. This nothing more than diverting entertainment, but it is fun nonetheless.
interesting...not much more to say.......2004-01-11
okay, i've read most of the other reviews for this movie and had high expectations for it. i mainly wanted to see it for jon bon jovi, maybe because he is really HOT. anyway, i was a little disappointed, but it was an overall job well done. i'm just going to state the fact that i'm only a teenager, which explains why i found a couple of scenes awkward. to make it short and simple, i would recommend that you only watch this movie before you turn out the lights to make it more interesting. in my opinion of course, you may have your own
BEST JOVI MOVIE EVER!!!!.......2003-12-03
if you are looking at this movie for the same reason i did (bon jovi) then you are looking at the right movie!
i've seen pretty much EVERY movie he's ever been in and this by far is the best. some of the other reviews said the same thing, that if you think bon jovi is the greatest you won't be disappointed!
here are a couple of reasons why this movie should be at the top of your bon jovi list:
*scenes with his shirt off
*he is the leading man
*seduces the leading ladies
*twisted ending
if you need more reasons than those you'll just have to check it out for yourself.
regrettable.......2003-11-30
the mystery of why anyone would cast jovi
in the lead cannot be answered by watching
this movie. just being a celeb doesn't give
you the acting chops necessary to hold up your
end in the company of established performers.
the faltering screenplay didn't help matters
either. altogether regrettable

A not very subtle variation on the buddy picture, this fluff comedy/action story squeaks by on the surprising charm generated by Jim Belushi (About Last Night, Salvador). Belushi plays the typically acerbic loner cop who relentlessly pursues a criminal mastermind while trying to juggle a relationship at home with girlfriend Tracy, played by Mel Harris of television's thirtysomething. The catch is that Belushi is saddled with a partner, an unruly German shepherd named Jerry Lee, and the gruff but lovable cop learns to love the dog of his dreams. The film is predictable from its first moments and survives only on the strength of the loose charm of its lead and the inoffensive performance of its lead canine. --Robert Lane
Customer Reviews:
Fun to watch every time........2007-05-17
James Belushi and Jerry Lee (the dog) work well together, even when they're not seemingly going in the same direction due to Jerry Lee's obstinance. That dog has a mind of his own. They are two characters you don't want to run into if you're a "bad guy."
This is one of the better of the K-9 movies. Very entertaining, with a makes-you-feel-good ending to the movie.
What do dogs REALLY mean to us?.......2006-01-19
I've watched this film at LEAST five times, yet one scene in this film NEVER fails to move me:James Belushi's Officer Dooley(carrying his gravely wounded police dog after a near fatal shoot-out)frantically runs into a nearby ER room and-through sheer guts and determination-gets immediate medical care for his dying police dog "Jerry Lee". The task is by no means an easy one, as he meets the nursing staff's firm refusal at every turn, culminating in a confrontation with an exasperated ER doc who assures him:"Don't get so excited, It's just a DOG!" to which Belushi(as Officer Dooley) declares(with STUNNING conviction):""He's NOT just a DOG! He's a COP! And he's not just ANY cop, he's my PARTNER! He's bleeding to death! Either you help him NOW or he's gonna DIE!" After the dazed medical staff wheel off Jerry Lee into surgery, you simply MUST LISTEN to Dooley's truly HEARTRENDING, straight from the gut reverie, spoken to HIMSELF more than his girlfriend Tracy(Mel Harris).
It simply breaks my heart EVERY time I hear it, as it's almost the exact same thing I heard an officer say in an animal ER many years ago! I challenge ANYONE to listen to him and NOT be moved right to the core. I swear that one scene-even if there was nothing else to recommend the film for-makes this film SO compelling to watch. A brilliant, sincere and surprising highmark of the film,I think it's easily James Belushi's finest screen moment.
This film unfortunately gets too many comparisons with "Turner & Hooch"(similar plots and both released the same year). What sets this film APART is that "K-9" asserts-albeit in a lighthearted manner befitting a screwball comedy-what MANY officers over the years have admitted:that your police dog does indeed become MORE than a mere tool to enhance your job performance. He becomes your PARTNER,deserving your utmost respect and support in ALL situations.
"Jerry Lee" is utterly adorable and amazing to watch as Belushi's shaggy canine partner. Watching him in action should silence anyone's argument over whether or not ANIMALS deserve the right to earn Oscar nominations too, tee hee!
Overall, I give it five stars for good, action-packed entertainment AND some meaty food for thought as to what dogs really DO mean to us, in whatever role they play in our lives!
PS Check out a HILARIOUS Ed O'Neill, as wise-cracking Officer Brannigan!
I have watched it 40 times.......2004-05-15
Grown man. Don't care about the plot or the humour, some of which is good. Seen all the series. THIS IS IT. If you like dogs you will go nuts for this movie.
FLAKY FLICK, BUT THE DOG MOMENTS ARE CUTE.......2004-03-03
A pedestrian plot, with some really really hard attempts at humor. Bellushi is alright, but almost everyone else smacks of a second rate B movie. The movie does have some neat moments though, especially where the dog is involved. I cooked while I "watched" it, perhaps that's a good way to "enjoy" this blooper.
Great movie.......2003-11-13
I love this movie, Jim Belushi is a great actor, the dog is great too.
All three of the K-9 movies are great, so if you own one of them, then you should own all three.

Colorblind when it comes to Laughter!!!!!.......2007-04-21
I like this movie. I tell you why. As first you think, wow that is so uncool and very mean spirited way to get a scholar. But at the end of the movie, you see that there was a "moral and a reflection of the cultures." Even though this movie wasn't a true story, we get to see the both sides of the spectrum. I thought this movie has some great parts. Like picking Thomas to be in the basketball team because they thought he was good. The Roll Call of "Right On!" Classic! When he went to the Kitchen without the Mask, "Look'n good momma, look'n good!" And it was his mother?!?!?! "I'm taking Law..." Friend said, "I thought you were taken?" "That was before I knew the professor was a Brutha!" I thought for James Earl Jones to take his role, I thought it was a cool thing for him to do. Would of thought he would be uptight for this. I would of thought for sure he would of thought the script is overboard and racist. Another classic part, when he (James) said, "Next time here's my phone number, if you go to jail again call me, I will bring your books!!" Come on, classic. It had a love story feel to it, that sometimes like Thomas said, "I never expected to fall in love with her." I got so use to seeing Thomas with the color pill change treatment that when at the end, I was like "Oh, that is what he looks like." But one think that was an eye opener was those two white kids with those racist jokes (realist though that there's some that do that) in the end got Karma!!! Reminds me of "White Chicks" from the Wayans, that was a good movie, and we see how white chicks act and "yes" like this movie, there's exaggeration, but all for the laughs of how we see things. I like this movie. A very classic comedy!
Soul Train.......2006-08-18
As we continue to be stifled by the almost unbearable, oppressive air of political correctness by the people who constantly complain about oppression, there is no doubt in my mind that Soul Man could not be made today.
For centuries, people have been using comedy as a way to explore issues that would be seen as didactic if addressed with a straight face. Literature giants like Voltaire used comedy to address social issues, with his story Candide being one of the funniest things I've ever read. Soul Man addresses racial issues in America; but because it's done with humor instead of drama, people see it as "making fun of" minorities rather than "helping" minorities.
Soul Man is a humorous film trying to help those who obviously have no sense of humor. A spoiled, rich white kid takes a lot of tanning pills, gets a jheri curl, and steals a scholarship meant for a black Harvard applicant because his father decided to stop supporting him. He finds out later he stole the scholarship from a woman (Rae Dawn Chong) who deserved it ten times more than he. C Thomas Howell grows and becomes more sensitive to black issues and blacks in general as he spends this brief period as a black man and falls in love with a black woman. He gains character and wisdom. And as he told his professor, played by James Earl Jones, he will never know what it's like to be black, because no matter how bad it got, he could always get out.
It doesn't make fun of blacks. It makes fun of whites who have their own closed-minded impressions. The stereotypical scenes in the movie come from the ignorance of the white characters, not the ignorance of the moviemakers.
Even though C. Thomas Howell's career unfairly suffered because of this BOLD movie, he did meet and end up marrying Rae Dawn Chong.
A Classic!.......2006-05-29
This is a pure classic. Comedy gold. Everyone is at the top of their game in it, James Earl Jones C. Thomas Howell, Rae Dawn Chong, Arye Gross, a pre-Seinfeld Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The commentary by Steve Miner and C. Thomas Howell is cool and informative. They are bewildered at all the controversy this film caused, and so am I. Because in the 80's, I never heard any controversy about this film, because I was a kid, enjoying it. Anyone that says this film is racist is ignorant, or has no sense of humor. I wager both. This film pokes fun at stereotypes. Have fun with it. The more you make it taboo, the greater the backlash will be. Like I said, this is a classic. The 80's was the best decade ever.
Typical Hollywood Race film.......2006-01-22
As of this writing I am watching this on HD. Back in the day when this came on cable, I thought that it was foolish because the guy looked more like an Indian(black toom but Asian) than a regular African-American. Seeing it on HD, you see that the make up looks even worse.
This is you typical film in Hollywood designed to not only make fun of black by pretending to teach whites how they feel subconciously about blacks, but it is also an overtly racist film by trying show that a white man was shut out of an education by a mandatory black quota. They don't fool me. This is typical racism in film in the 1980's. Only After Spike Lee made it big did things begin to change. No more "N" words(without a black in the film), no more black or "soul brother" jokes, no more black women wh want to sex white guys(they never show the black guys sexing black women of course...) and no more idiot films such as these. This film has ALL of the black stereotypes in the book, not excluding the black basketball specialist. You know, kind of what you see in commercials today! A black man in sports. While the forcefullness these types of films has changed, the images are still here today, just disguised to make black people think that they are looking cool and being recognized. Blacks in Hollywood are only being recognized for sports, music, dance and all out foolishness.
Looking at it today, it seems totally foolish. It is worth watching just to see it, but as with most films, this is designed to brainwash the audience. Not for the postive of blacks, but for the subliminal "reverse racism" story. Every film has a messege and this film's messege is that black mave experience racism, but they get over and hurt white people in the end.
Being Black Has Never Been Funnier.......2005-09-09
C. Thomas Howell...where have u gone? In this brilliant dramedy Howell plays Mark Watson...an overachieving law student who overdoses on tanning pills in order to earn a scholarship into Harvard...as, get this, a negro! thats right, jheri curl and all watson plays it so well he even fools his best friend and sends him falling off the end of the pier in a hilarious jogging scene. this movie shows that its truly wise to never give up but rather to get down. there is even talk of hypodermic needles and watermelon...the film has it all...id say this is the best movie about a white guy who pretends to be black to get into law school EVER made!
