This is the lowest budget movie ever. The only saving grace is the way too low-cut swimsuit shot near the beginning of the movie. Well, they had to do something to make it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars This movie's SUPPOSED to be stupid........2003-02-09

This movie was written with every intent to make you role your eyes and laugh. And, for me, it succeeded very well; I didn't stop laughing through the entire thing. It takes nothing seriously, especially itself (that's called a farce). It pokes fun at the film industry and itself. If you want to take a break from reality, be thoroughly entertained, and learn nothing of redeaming value, this is the perfect movie.

2 out of 5 stars WOW! WHAT A HORRIBLE MOVIE!.......2002-10-14

Ok, first off, I love Corey Feldman and Corey Haim, and I love movies, but I almost couldn't even finish this movie. They get fired from their job and kicked out of their apartment, so Feldman's uncle that is an ex-pirate actor magically warps them to his island to become scuba instructors, but his uncle's old on screen nemesis tries to take over the island and blah blah blah. I would like to meet the guy that wrote this script and thougth he had something special. The only reason I gave this 2 stars is because the two Corey's are in it, and both of them rule, they just got caught in a very bad movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2001-09-21

Not only is this a great movie, but it has Corey Feldman! Now Corey Feldman can do no wrong by me. I think every Corey fan should see this movie. And I think Corey is one of the most talented people out there and I don't care who knows it! So make fun of him all you want because to the people that really like him it doesn't matter.

4 out of 5 stars Duh, this movie isn't supposed to make sense.......2000-09-30

I read a lot of reviews of this movie and they all say pretty much the same thing, it's unintelligable, but i think that's kind of the point. The first time I saw this movie it was on TNT at 1:00 in the morning, which is the time i recommend people watch this movie if they want to get the full effect, because when you are extreamly tired, you don't care about a plot, you just say hey, that's a cool movie, which is what this movie is. There's some great visuals like sam and dave's split apartment, and plastic figures hanging from wires that are apparently suspended in mid air. 3 out of 5 stars "It's going to be the vacation of a lifetime!".......2006-12-12

Producer Roger Corman utilized a number of techniques in the production of his films, two of the main ones being keeping things inexpensive (i.e. cheap) and copying off pre-existing, successful features, both of which apply to the film Last Resort (1986). Directed by Zane Buzby, in his only film to date (he has done some episodic work on television), the film stars Charles Grodin (The Lonely Guy, Midnight Run) as George Lollar, a hapless, overworked husband and father who takes his family on the vacation of a lifetime, one that quickly turns into the trip from hell. Also appearing is Robin Pearson Rose ("Grey's Anatomy"), Gerrit Graham (Used Cars), Phil Hartman (Coneheads), John Ashton (Beverly Hills Cop), Ian `Mr. Pitt' Abercrombie ("Seinfeld"), Mario Van Peebles (Jaws: The Revenge), Jon Lovitz (Rat Race), Brenda Bakke (Demon Knight), Scott Nemes ("The Wonder Years"), and Megan Mullally (Stealing Harvard), who eventually went on to find success as the catty, snobby character Karen Walker in the television series "Will & Grace".

As the film opens it's Christmas time in Chicago, the weather's rotten, and office furniture salesman George Lollar has just lost one of his company's biggest accounts. Feeling burned out he decides to take his family, including wife Shelia (Rose) and children Brad, Jessica (Mullally), and Bobby (Nemes) on a fabulous vacation to a South American resort known as Club Sands. After a plane ride that was more like a thrill ride, the family arrives to discover the place is a real dump, sans any amenities such as televisions or telephones (their rooms are little more than plywood huts with lumpy cots and inconsistent plumbing). George tries to keep things upbeat, but his family does not share in his optimistic views. Things steadily go from bad to worse, for George at least, in terms of obnoxious guests (John Ashton), overly effeminate, touchy-feely resort workers (Phil Hartman and Mario Van Peebles), and more. Once the shock settles in George's family begins to acclimate themselves in terms of his daughter making all kinds of new man friends with the hunky, straight resort workers (who tend to walk around in banana hammocks most of the time), his wife imbibing in generous doses of alcohol, among other things, his elder son hooking up with the resort bimbo, and his younger son, consigned to a junior resort that's run like a concentration camp, rebelling in certain ways, desperate to escape if only to get a glimpse of the nude beach. Turns out George is the only one not having any fun as his uptight attitudes get him into all sorts of embarrassing predicaments. The situation eventually deteriorates to the point where guerilla rebels invade the resort, the hopes being they'll snag a few wealthy guests for undetermined purposes (I'm guessing ransom, but it's not entirely clear).

I mentioned earlier Roger Corman had a tendency to copy off of pre-existing, successful films, and Last Resort is no different as it's basically a play off of National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), only not nearly as well done. I will say having Charles Grodin starring in the film helped immeasurably as even with the material here being as shoddy as it was, he still provided for some of the funniest moments. I actually did laugh out loud a few times, but the comedy, which started off strong, tends to drop off seriously as the film wears on particularly due to the fact there's not much of a story here. I think my favorite part of the film comes after the first night the Lollar family spends at the resort, as George and Sheila are awoken early the next morning by Phil Hartman's fruity character walking into their hut, announcing loudly the start of aerobic classes, to which George replies in turn, "GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!" Believe me, it's a lot funnier on screen than it is described here. As far as the effeminate bits, they were funny at first, but the joke is played on to the point where it becomes kind of embarrassing, probably more so for the actors, many of who probably wouldn't mind seeing this film disappear from existence (actually this might be worth seeing if only to witness Ian Abercrombie as a swishy maitre d', mincing about in what appears to be a floppy diaper). Another funny bit is when George's wife, whacked out on shrooms, gets involved in a resort sponsored game called `Show Us Your Breasts'...while she does participate, her back is to the camera so we don't get to see anything which is too bad as according to one, overly obnoxious vacationer, they were spectacular. In terms of nekkidness, there's very little, the only bit a quick, topless flash by the resort skeez played by Brenda Bakke, who appeared in the film Demon Knight (1995) as the character Cordelia. As far as Megan Mullally I didn't even recognize her until I saw her name in the credits, as while she was pushing thirty around the time this film was released, she truly did appear to be much younger and a lot more svelte than I'm accustomed to seeing her in some of her later roles. She has no nekkid scenes, but she does appear regularly in a two-piece swimsuit, looking rather foxy. I was slightly disappointed overall in that there was a lot of true, comedic talent here (Charles Grodin, Phil Hartman, Gerrit Graham, Jon Lovitz), but the material doesn't come close to living up to many of the performers' potential...not that I was expecting it to, but still...if you're looking for a funny film, the first half hour or so may fit the bill, but know things drop off seriously after that into the realm of mildly amusing. All in all this film's worth a look if you're not too discriminating, or if you're a huge Charles Grodin fan.

The picture on this Buena Vista DVD release is presented in full frame (1.33:1) and looks decent enough, I suppose, but is nothing to write home about. You know, when Disney secured the rights to release Roger Corman's films onto DVD I had hopes that they would step up and provide some releases better than the one we were getting prior, but that never happened. As far as the audio it's in Dolby Digital stereo, and comes across okay. There's not much in the way of extras except for some cast and crew biographies, and trailers, one for this film, and two others for Eat My Dust! (1976) and Rock `n' Roll High School (1979).

Here's an interesting coincidence...remember when I mentioned Last Resort (1986) was basically a rehash of National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)? Well, turns out National Lampoon later released a film titled National Lampoon's Last Resort (1994) featuring Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. I haven't seen it but it sounds like a real winner...

1 out of 5 stars Go someplace else on your vacation!.......2006-11-09

I had high hopes for this movie when I purchased it. It had John Lovitz, so I thought it would be funny. However, Lovitz is given little chance to be funny. As it is a Roger Corman flick I expected lots of T & A. However, the DVD fell short in that category too.

The movie centers around a man (Charles Grodin) who is sick of his job and wants to get away from winter. So, she takes his family to a resort to "get away from it all." When he gets there he finds out that the place is more "adult-oriented" than he would like. It has a nude beach and most of the people there are swingers. [Given all this, it makes it even more suprising that there's so little nudity - the film had plenty of opportunities]

The best thing about the film is Robin Pearson Rose. She is exquisite and a fine actress. I'm going to look to see what else she's been in as soon as I'm done w/this review. I'd like to see her in something more worthwhile than this farce. If she would have been exposed in the many teaser scenes of this flick, I would have raised the score to 3 stars. Yes, she is that hot!!

If you want to see a good Roger Corman comedy, check out LOOSE SCREWS. It's far, far better and much more funny than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with future stars -- and hilarious!.......2005-12-09

This is just classic. Charles Grodin as the straight man, surrounded by Phil Hartmann, Mario van Peebles, young John Lovitz, and other supporting actors. It's at times so stupid it is brilliant. I have seen it about 11 times.

It is an unknown cult classic. Maybe now that the DVD is coming out it will catch on.

Description

Port of Last Resort presents the little-known story of nearly 20,000 European Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai from 1938-1941. Shanghai was a free port that did not require papers for entry, and became the "last resort" to find a safe haven from the terror of the Nazis. Filmmakers Joan Grossman and Paul Rosdy have assembled a remarkable film out of rare footage. Sensational 8mm and 16mm home movies intimately portray the daily life of refugees and life on the streets of Shanghai. Refugee family films document the month-long ship voyage to Shanghai, while films by Viennese emigrant Charles Bliss and American Eric Schmidt create a rich cinematic texture. Combined with Japanese films and outtakes of American newsreels, this is a poignant and beautiful journey.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2004-03-12

I love this film - a welcome break from tiresome 'blockbusters'. I adore that almost 'fly on the wall' nature that films like this posess. Wonderful dialogue, especially from Alfie, who seems suspicious, but who you yourself gain to trust. Great social comment. Just love it. Why aren't there more films like this?

5 out of 5 stars LAST RESORT deserves a wider audience.......2002-02-06

When a Russian woman and her son arrive in England to be with her fiancee, she certainly never expects to find herself requesting political asylum and being sent to an immigration center where they must stay for up to a year until her paperwork clears. When her fiancee abandons her, her future seems uncertain.

LAST RESORT relies on natural performances, striking composition, and a harsh, but ultimately uplifting story to really score high. Dina Korzun is magnificent as Tanya, bouncing from despair to motherly concern to delight with a charm and naturalness that truly works. Artyom Strelnikov, as Tanya's son Artyom, is wise beyond his years, the more realistic of the two, and thoroughly convincing. Paddy Considine as Alfie, the one man who befriends her also wins us over with his easy-going and natural performance.

At the heart of this film is the beautiful relationship between mother and son. Tanya is fiercely protective of her son, yet treats him like an equal... and in many ways he is. A scene where Tanya must tell Artyom of a poor choice she made to make money is sublime in its beauty.

I am a native of South Louisiana & I was really disappointed in the movie. It only showed one small, small corner of New Orleans during this time. I do not agree with the way thing were portrayed in this film at all. Everyone had a choice, maybe not the money to evacuate but everyone knew what may be coming & what could happen. After the storm, there was mass hysteria. How could they just let everyone loose & not try to restore order. There was curfews in place, there had to be. If there was not police officers & National Guard trying to control the situation can you imagine how much worse things could have been? I was scared to death when they started bussing all of these people into my hometown. They were devastated, hysterical & had nothing. A great bit of these people believed that we owed them something & would loot homes, we heard of robberies. What were they supposed to do other than contain these people until they could get them back under control? I probably would have been just as hysterical if not worse, but I understand that when you have a situation like that there has got to be order. But I also have to say that no matter how many times it was a false alarm, or how much money it will cost, I still evacuate. I have been through Hurricane Andrew, then we had Bob Breck telling us for Lily & Rita that if you were where I lived & stayed you were going to die. It is a very bad feeling, you freak out. I refuse to stay for another storm, I do not care if the Governor orders a mandatory evacuation or not - I have a choice & a brain, I can make that call on my own, if I stay for a storm & this happens again then shame on me not blame everyone else. Nobody owes me anything, I have to take care of myself & not depend on others to tell me what to do.

Stranded in a New Orleans hotel with a group of five adults and four children, film maker James Bills put his camera to good use in his native city. In this one-hour documentary, with no stock footage at all, he records the city before, during, and mainly after Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005. Even today, seeing his film, it is hard to comprehend the terrifying power, destructive force, and catastrophic flooding of the storm. Bills interviews a handful of citizens and with understated narration lets them tell their stories. The bald lies and gross incompetence of local, state, and especially the federal government loom large. "It has changed me forever," reminisced one woman. "I will never depend upon the government for anything. You're on your own." A recent article in the New York Times suggested that 18 months later, New Orleans's population has probably topped out at less than half of its pre-hurricane size.

LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), English (Subtitles), ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SYNOPSIS: In Pawel Pawlikowski's drama, Dina Korzun plays a young Russian woman named Tanya who goes to England with her sullen preadolescent son in search of a fresh start. She explains to the impassive customs officials at the airport that her fiancé will be meeting her shortly, but he seems to have made other plans. And so they find themselves in the desolate seaside town of Stonehaven, whose crumbling high-rise hotels and shuttered amusements have been converted into a "designated holding area" for illegal immigrants. The thoughtful stylishness of Pawlikowski's direction doesn't cheapen or aestheticize Tanya's plight but rather extends to her the dignity and compassion that only art can confer.
