    Description

Randy commits a victimless crime that would normally get him probation and a hefty fine, but in the "three-strikes" world of justice, he finds himself locked up for 25 years. His cellmate Jake is a congenial yet remorseless lifer who casually informs Randy that he slit his wife's throat because she slept with another man just three months after they exchanged vows. Jake recognizes Randy's fear and offers him advice on how to make it in prison. But it soon becomes clear that Jake has much more than mentoring in mind as he takes Randy under his wing. "Jailbait" sets a darkly cerebral tone, juxtaposing brutality with the unattainable ideal of intimacy in the harshest of psychological environments. For these two men so yearning to be anything but who they are and where they are, power is the goal, and it's never clear who truly holds it right up to the last unsettling moment.

I own this film and actor Michael Pitt really shines in this role. This film is an absolute rollarcoaster ride that takes place in one jail cell...and there's no way out!

    "JAILBAIT"

    Thought-provoking and Emotional

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Surely one of the most fascinating films I have seen this year is ?Jailbait? from Warner Brothers and now out on DVD. It tells the story of Randy who commits a victimless crime that would ordinarily have put him on probation but because of the ?three strikes of justice? he is locked up for twenty-five years. His cellmate is Jake who at first seems to be the most congenial of all people is remorseless after which he very casually tells Randy that he is in jail for slitting his wife?s throat three months after they were married. Jake senses how afraid Randy is of prison life and advises him how to behave so as to make his life easier. But there is something else about Jake and why he takes Randy to heart. This is a dark, cerebral film which juxtaposes brutality with intimacy. The goal is power for these two people who so obviously are where they do not want to be. The attainment of power?one man over the other?is what propels the film.
Michael Pitt and Stephen Adly-Gurgis, who play the lead roles, are nothing short of amazing. It is as if the characters were designed for them. They create a sense of tension and breathlessness and any violence that occurs in the story is not seen on film. Everything is by insinuation or allusion. Ninety-nine percent of the movie takes place in a closed claustrophobic cell and there are just no words to describe the emotions that run through you as you sit and watch the interchanges between the occupants. Emotion is abundant but also insinuated and you feel as if you are on a roller coaster while listening to the conversation. I would say it took me over an hour to recover from the film once it was over. It is a haunting film with its limited cast, one principle setting and almost exclusive use of the color blue and lack of background music. Randy?s cellmate was a fearsome yet loveable character, amusing and disturbing at the same time. Randy (Michael Pitt) portrayed such facial emotion and such regret for his place in life that it is hard to forget him.
The only way to really describe the film is to say that it is powerful, disturbing, thought-provoking and humorous at the same time. It is mature and seasoned. In this two man prison drama the interaction between the two characters is highly pronounced and from the mild beginning of a rather tender meeting, between the two men, the menace of below the surface tension is felt quite strongly. At first we are not certain what the menace is but as we watch and observe Randy?s face, we more or less feel that rape is impending.
What goes on in prisons today really hits home. It is shocking to see the entire lead up to rape, the carefully planned maneuvers, and the sheer lack of feeling. We know that young men are raped and mentally abused by cellmates and the federal government and the judicial system do nothing about it. This is hat ?Jailbait? is about. It should be a wake up call to everyone as to what goes on in our prison system

3 out of 5 stars Riveting performances in powerful film about mandatory prison sentences.......2006-11-11

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Lake Placid Film Festival, "Jailbait" is the story of Randy, just a few years out of high school, who makes the mistake of testing California's "three strikes" felony law (on two pot possession charges and one vandalism) and finds himself with a 25 year prison sentence. The film opens with his goodbye to his mother and arrival at the prison, where he is assigned a cell with an older "lifer", Jake, who befriends him at first, but later preys on Randy's fear and the intimacy they developed in order to manipulate him and get what he wants.

A powerful film which, on its surface, shows how our prison system fails young men like Randy, who become default playthings for the older, stronger inmates. It also illustrates, without discussion (beyond Jake's laughter when he learns why Randy is there), the stupidity of any law that mandates a lengthy sentence regardless of the circumstances. In the two lead roles, Michael Pitt (Randy) and Stephen Adly Guirgis (Jake) provide riveting performances that would have been rewarded if the subject matter was a bit less controversial. Rated R for language and discussion of sexual activity, although there is no sex or nudity in the film itself. The only DVD extra is the trailer and chapter stops.

1 out of 5 stars Who would buy this?.......2005-02-15

Unfortunately I did, but only because it was $4.99 and reading thye description it sounded like a funny teen comedy. I have always liked teen comedies, American pie, Road trip, Old school, 16 Candles, porky's, Last American virgin. All of these I've enjoyed muliple times. I understand these movies aren't cinematic masterpieces, but they are funny, and sometimes that is exactly what I want, brainless humor. I thought Jailbait might be the same.

I don't care for MTV movies, with Election being the exception, and I didn't know this was an MTV movie. That being said, I think you would need to be under 13 and mildly retarded to get anything from this film.

The story could be funny, but it isn't. The characters (or caricatures) are mindless robots from the leads all the way down to the extras. The movie is not sexy, it's almost anti-sex. poorly written, poorly acted, poorly directed. There is no one to root for or against and at 80 whatever minutes it is a snoozer.

Film is aimed at the road rules real world audience but I can't imagine them enjoying this either.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious comedy about a true life situation.......2004-12-25

Like many of the other people out there reading this right now, I first saw the movie Jailbait when it premiered on MTV back in 2000. When I first saw the movie I got the impression it was a "made for mtv" movie. I had no idea it was an actually movie and you would be able to buy it. That was until one day one of my friends said he had ordered it off of Amazon. I immediately got on and ordered the movie. And let me say to this date I have not been dissapointed. If you're one of the people who watched the movie on MTV, then you really need to get the DVD because there was a lot of things cut out of the TV. The storyline is hilarious. You follow Adam, a senior in high school, who's friends are all having sex, and his girlfriend won't have it with him. Adam quickly finds a willing participant in Ginger, a 15 year old sophmore, and they have some fun together. That is until Adams finds out he has gotten Ginger pregnate, and now the State is trying to imprison him for statuory rape (I'm not sure how you spell that). There's so many funny moments following this, like Adam's lawyer, who is one seen on tv, and his office is located above a bowling alley. Adam also has to start referring to Ginger by her initials G.A.G, due to court circumstances. Really there's not a moment in this movie that isn't funny. Probably the most memorable part of the entire movie is when Adam is on the witness stand and says "Mike Mewborne blew up the chemistry lab trying to build dynamite, and all he had to do was pick up trash, and I think it's unfair if I get 20 to 40 you know?". Also when they ask Adam, "Do you admit to sleeping with G.A.G more than 3 times between the dates of October 26 and November 24" and he says "Well a lot more." It's stuff like this that will just make you laugh. This movie has a funny take on a very serious topic, and a very welcomed DVD to my collection.

4 out of 5 stars IT WOULD BE 5 STARS.......2004-05-20

ok, I just got this movie, and I liked it in the first place so it was nice to see it again in a lil better quality, my whole problem with this DVD is the lack of extras, or better yet the lack of having the semi-documentary of the actual Guy the movie was derived from, every time I saw this on MTV right afterwards they would tell the true story... what happened to that? other than that great flick, can see why people think its not so good, but those people are the ones that just wont get it in the first place.

1 out of 5 stars Passafist Reviews Jailbait.......2003-06-18

I must admit, I watched Allan Moyle's Pump Up The Volume religiously for almost a year when I was sophomore in college. So the other day while I was perusing a new blockbuster in my area I came across this curious film. I was interested, so I rented it. I'm so sorry and ask for penance.

JAILBAIT is one of those self aware teenie-bopper flicks which I later found out had it's premiere on MTV. It thinks it a comedy; to bad it isn't funny. It thinks it's camp; to bad it's disjointed and stupid. You know, the nicest thing I can say about this film is that it's in focus.

It stars Kevin Mundy (3000 Miles to Grace Land) as Jim Darling, the most popular senior in his high school. He has a girlfriend named Amber (Regan Pasternak) who won't give him sexual gratification. So he finds it in Gynger, (Alica Purrot) a trailer trash sexpot who's a sophomore. All hell breaks loose when Gynger becomes pregnant, Jim is charged with statutory rape, an Amber is hurt but for some reason is oblivious to how much of an idiot Jim is.

There's not one smart person in this film. Everyone is a dolt, there's no voice of reason, and so about 10 minutes in you've lost all interest. Except the story thinks this is funny, so it throws in zingers left and right, not one of which is funny.

Fortunately the film is short, barely 80 minutes, but early on there are two sequences thrown in because I think someone felt it necessary to stretch the running time. The first scene is of Gynger lying there in her underwear staring at a photo. The next is a four minute Music video, with a bunch of unidentifiable girls (possibly some failed band) singing and a take-off of Britney Spears `Hit Me Baby One More Time.'

The film is also quite sexually explicit for the first 4 or 5 minutes. Then for some reason it's all reigned in. This is probably best explained by its inclusion as an original movie from MTV. I can honestly say this film is the WORST MTV film ever, even worse than JOE'S APARTMENT.

Director Allan Moyle should be ashamed of this film. Especially since some of his other work is far better (Pump Up The Volume and The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag are great). I'll give him this one as a lapse in judgment after that I don't know. I'd rather be in jail than sit through JAILBAIT again.
