Matthew Broderick makes up for years of wet-noodle performances with his low-key but unsparing characterization of Jim McAllister, a high school teacher at George Washington Carver High School in Omaha, Nebraska. Driven by a strange mixture of loathing and lust for pathologically overachieving student Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon), McAllister encourages a dim but popular athlete, Paul (Chris Klein from American Pie), to run against her in the election for student-council president. Director-cowriter Alexander Payne (Citizen Ruth) turns this deceptively simple premise into a complex and scathing comedy of ambition, corruption, and desire, all at its most naked and petty. Every scene contains some painfully funny nuance that will make you wince in a mixture of astonishment and empathy. Witherspoon flips effortlessly back and forth from adolescent vulnerability to steely-eyed strength; she's becoming a contemporary Carole Lombard. The movie itself feels like a magnificent throwback to the richly layered comedies of the '30s, which drew their humor from sharply drawn characters and twisting plots instead of explosions of bodily fluids. With a wealth of smart, cutting details, Election rewards multiple viewing. --Bret Fetzer

As deadpan comedies go, Napoleon Dynamite stands in a class all its own. Played by John Heder, the title character is (in the words of critic Roger Ebert) "the kind of nerd other nerds avoid," a mouth-breathing dweeb with a mangy nest of orange hair, and ungainly features that suggest a perpetual state of half-conscious depression. He lives in Preston, Idaho (former home of 24-year-old director Jared Hess) with his thrill-seeking grandma and 32-year-old brother, and his days at high school consist mostly of being abused or ignored by indifferent classmates. Napoleon's sad-sack story doesn't offer the scathing, impassioned humor of Welcome to the Dollhouse because Hess (who cowrote the nearly plotless screenplay with his wife, Jerusha) doesn't have an angst-ridden axe to grind. Instead, the comedy (which exists in a tacky universe of worn-out rural suburbia) is so low-key that some will find it difficult to laugh, while others (i.e., those who feel superior to Napoleon) will have plenty of fun at Napoleon's expense. The result is a curiously uneven film, hilarious at times, but hampered by its own sense of affectionate mockery. An audience favorite at the Sundance film festival, Napoleon Dynamite may not be entirely lovable, but it's definitely unique. --Jeff Shannon

I just don't get it. I guess I'm just an oldfardt. The only time I laughed during this film was when Napolean was trying to jump the make-shift ramp with his bike. I do give 1 star for the very original opening credit sequence.

4 out of 5 stars It's actually hard to describe why this movie was so funny..........2007-05-06

When someone gushes about a movie being the funniest thing they've ever seen, it usually kills it for me. Fortunately, I had no expectations at all for this movie, and ended up thinking it was hilarious.

I don't know where to start...Napoleon's brother is SUCH a dweeb you'll want to smack him yourself---yet I'm laughing even now thinking about him. There are all these subtle continuity errors and era-inappropriate artifacts that are so obvious they had to be intentional, and even those still make me laugh.

But the real reason the movie is funny is because most of the characters are so incredibly pathetic they'll remind you, sometimes quite painfully, of real people. Some parts almost make you cringe that way.

If you're looking for something a little different, and if you can sit down to watch this without any particular expectations, you might accidentally get a huge kick out of it. I did. (Make sure you watch the part after the credits; a lot of people miss that.)

A comedy with serious intentions, Man of the Year attempts to challenge the audience's notions of what is and isn't real when it comes to politics. Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is a popular political talk show host. As a lark, he runs for president and wins. The thing is, he's not any more unqualified than the other candidates, so his victory doesn't seem quite so outrageous. But when it turns out that the computer ballot firm responsible for tallying all the votes may have had a glitch--and that a recount would negate his win--mayhem ensues and the film segues from comedy, to drama, and back to comedy (sort of) again. Directed by Barry Levinson (Diner, Wag the Dog), the film doesn't take advantage of Williams' natural humor or charm. He at times appears to be chomping at the bit to unleash a comedic tirade or two, only to be held back by stiff lines. Williams only truly appears to be enjoying himself when trading lines with Laura Linney, who portrays the hapless do-gooder at the ballot firm who's being set up to appear unreliable. With some fine performances by a supporting cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Lewis Black, and the inimitable Christopher Walken, Man of the Year occasionally hints at greatness. But at best, it's a lukewarm comedy with a diluted message. --Jae-Ha Kim

3 out of 5 stars Identity Crisis.......2007-06-21

Political comedian, Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams), runs for President as an Independent, and you guessed it...he wins. A company called Delacroy, has created a new computer-based voting system that is used in the new election. During the election a Delacroy employee, Eleanor Green (Laura Linney), discovers the voting system is flawed and that Tom Dobbs was elected because of a computer glitch. Before word gets out, Delacroy fires Green and ruins her credibility. She must decide what to do with the information she has on the faulty voting system, even though she believes Tom Dobbs is the best choice for the country.

This biggest problem with this movie is its identity crisis. Is this a comedy or a political drama/thriller? Robin Williams does what this role demands. His character is over the top, funny, and even likeable. Laura Linney is likewise great in her role as a disgruntled ex-employee with a secret that will rock the country. However, the two storylines of these characters feel like two different movies altogether, and when they merge it really doesn't work. The rest of the cast is average at best, with extremely mediocre appearances by Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Walken. Should these two actors ever be cast in the same movie? Too much eccentricity for me.

I am so disappointed because this movie could have been great. Two great concepts: political comedian becomes President and new voting system gone bad. Too bad they belong in separate movies.

3 out of 5 stars So Much Potential...So Little Realized!.......2007-06-13

I know Robin Williams isn't everyone's favorite, but I've always been drawn to his quick-witted style. I didn't have high expectations for this film, primarily because it didn't do so well at the box office (I think it closed before I even realized it was out in theaters!).

But, since we were in the doldrums between the end of the new spring TV shows and the start of the summer season of new offerings, I figured it was worth $3.95 to pass a couple of hours. I wasn't disappointed, but I definetly won't be adding to my permanent DVD collection either.

The storyline had so much potential to be a political satire loosely based on a Jon Stewart-type personality becoming President, that I actually caught myself enjoying it. But just when I thought they'd bring down the house, the pulled the rug out from under me by ruining it with computer-election fraud. C'mon people, were you afraid someone was going to take you seriously? As if!

I won't give any more away lest I spoil it for someone else (if I haven't already), but if you want to see it, don't let me discourage you. It's worth $4 bucks, but I'd wait until Target knocks it down to under $10 to buy it...and only buy it if you absolutely have to have every single movie Robin Williams has ever been in. Otherwise, you won't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Suspensful and Exciting.......2007-06-09

Very exciting. It has everything, Robin William's Humor, action, suspense, and more. Great plot and really keeps you on the edge of your seat!!

4 out of 5 stars Funnier than real politics.......2007-06-07

And that's saying something when you look at the current crop of comics vying for the office of most powerful chief executive on earth. It makes some good points about some of the problems with our political system in an entertaining way. The supposed computer glitch plot line is completely hokey, unrealistic and insults the intelligence of this software developer. The whole idea is ridiculous. Nothing could be easier than to design a vote tallying system. It's an ATM for votes.

3 out of 5 stars important political statement, just not delivered in the most effective style.........2007-06-06

Man of the year, Robin williams latest movie, is a complete rehashing of 'Wag the dog' (which was made by the same people).. like wag the dog the film is very relevant, very important, and kind of disturbing.. Unlike wag the dog: the dialogue often falls flat, it is slightly predictable, the acting while good does not reach the humor and irony of dustin hoffman's performance... I hate to compare two movies like this (it is very often unfair to do so) but I know that the producers of this film are capable of originality (wag the dog was very original afterall).. Robin williams presence alone is usually enough to make a movie enjoyable - but even he (see rv for more proof of this) is only a human being.. Strangely williams recent dramatic appearances have been nearly twice as good as his comedic ones... Though williams is not responsible if a movie he acts in is not perfect - his talents can and should be used more effectively..
Now for the good stuff about this movie - it is completely relevant - one thing modern politics has shown us over the past years is that it deserves to be mocked.. our well greased political structure works well at dealing with business and watching out for the wealthy but it is a system which (very often)neglects the individual and, indeed, the power of a vote (we know this from the gore-bush race - yes gore did actually get elected).. Until justice is served we need to shake things up - and that is one thing 'man of the year does do'.. so do not just take this as a tongue in cheek statement - this is reality folks..

1 out of 5 stars Bored me to tears *Spoilers*.......2007-04-18

Yea, yea, let's all beat up people with ambition. Being the president of the lazy and procastination club myself, sure I'd love to hop on that train. The thing is, this movie isn't funny or even mildly entertaining. I see absolutely no point to have Tracy Flick involved in a sexual relationship with one of her teachers, especially one who was so beneath her intellect and not in the least bit attractive. Flick makes a comment that maybe she was looking for a father-figure-but then her search seemed to just stop and there's no real point to it. If you look at it as further coal to the fire for McAlister to hate her (since it was his best friend) it doesn't really work, since he, too, struggled with the moral and ethical war within himself. What was the point of the lesibans angle or Tammy taking the fall for Tracy? Nothing in this movie seem like it was building toward anything. It was a bunch of isolated incidents thrown together. Even the ending felt like it didn't know when to end. No one ever seems to have a problem when a man is ambitious or drunk with power, but when you put those characteristics in a woman: watch out. I think it all started with that darn apple.

5 out of 5 stars Future Hillary Clinton.......2007-02-22

A true satire, Election displays Reese Witherspoon as the precise, cunning, and ruthless Tracy Flick, the student council wiz. She's going to be class president, but don't get in her way. Matthew Broderick, her history teacher sees the monster in waiting, but is unable to stop the juggernaut. In his desire to thwart, he manages to destroy his career and marriage, while Tracy Flick thrives. Witherspoon gave us a sympathetic version of this character later with Legally Blonde, but in Election, as a young teen, she balances her innocence with her craving for power, if not, order. She is your junior year girlfriend on political steroids about to become a Hillary Clinton.

Teenage frisky behavior in our modern times, gads, I didn't know what was under a girl's skirt till the Nixon administration. Lesbian sisters, hot tub teens with potty mouths and more, its all right kids.

Alexander Payne the writer director delivers repeatedly, Something About Schmidt, Sideways, and Election, his Midwesterners are having an existential crisis. Their milk and honey has mutated.

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and reality-based morality tale.......2006-11-29

Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick star in this variation on ethics and morality tale played out through a high school election. This film reminded me very much of 2003's "Saved", where a ver similar tale was played out at a Christian school.

Here Witherspoon is remarkably well-cast as Tracy Flick, a high school go-getter than wants to be school president. However, teacher Mr. McAllister (Broderick) knows Tracy is bad news and tries his best to prevent her from winning. He enlists a football star to run against Tracy; later, the star's lesbian sister gets in on the election on an apathy ballot.

Everyone manages to violate some form of ethical behavior in this film, which is very well-acted with a brisk pace, good sets and wonderful sense or realism in a fictitious Omaha, Neb. high school. Almost every character in the story starts out wanting to do well but ends up violating some moral or ethical behavior.

Is there a point to this film? Obviously, that people will go to extremes to get what they want. I think that is secondary to the "fun" element, however. The morality tale is what makes the film memorable (aside from the brilliant acting by all the students and the direction) but it is the laughter and humor the individual stories generate that keep you glued to the story.

In the end, this is a great movie for any adult that attended school, demonstrates a human frailty, or knows anything about power and the abuse of power. It is one of many notches in the bedpost for Witherspoon, who is now Hollywood's most highest-paid actress. You'll begin to see why watching her characterization here.

5 out of 5 stars Pick Flick.......2006-11-28

Last night I finally had the chance to watch `Election' and I have to say that it was everything I hoped it would be. It was smart, funny and enjoyable, a pretty good way to spend an evening. This was truly a shining moment for its young star Reese Witherspoon, and arguably the role of Tracy Flick should have landed her her first Oscar nomination. As Tracy, Witherspoon effortlessly switches from sweet goody-two-shoes over achiever to evil revenge driven competitor.

The film follows a school election where Tracy is the sole runner for school council president. After having an affair with a teacher, Dave (Mark Harelik), who proved to be the best friend of teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick in a performance I didn't see in him) she has formed an enemy in Jim, and so when Jim realizes that her constant winning streak of getting whatever she wants no matter who she bulldozers over needs to end he bribes popular jock Paul Metzler (Chris Kline) to run against her.

This small gesture sparks a feud that gets all but too heated and leads to some pretty crazy, and funny situations. Not only does Paul run but so does his younger sister Tammy (Jessica Campbell), a lesbian who is so upset that her ex-girlfriend has taken up with Paul that she decides to run against him and when she begins to get more support than Paul and Tracy combined Tracy begins to think of ways to get Tammy removed from the race. The election is far from the only thing on Jim's mind as he becomes too close to Dave's ex-wife Linda (Delaney Driscoll) and begins an affair that may cost him his marriage.

The script is tight and fresh and the acting is genuinely hysterical (all except Chris Kline who is just a horrid actor). Matthew Broderick, an actor I am normally none to fond of, actually delivers here, but it's Reese who steels the show with every tantrum, every concerned and or distressed facial expression and that whole poster tearing scene...priceless! If you want a fresh high school comedy that's smart enough for the adult mind then pick `Election'.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Example Of How Deadly-Funny Dark Satire Can Be.......2006-10-16

The bite to this movie comes from its near-perfect insight into what high school, overachievers, bored teachers, society, competitive people, politics, and marriages mired in ennui are all about. It's smart, it's incredibly funny, and it gets the most out of a very good cast.

Election, set in the 1990's at a school outside Omaha, tells the story of a frightening human dynamo, a senior who wishes to cap off her near-perfect career in high school by being elected to the student counsel presidency. As played by Reese Witherspoon, Tracy Flick (whose last name spelled several times in the movie all in capital letters---"FLICK"---looks suggestively like another word) sees the office as the next logical step in her sociopathic upward climb toward a full scholarship to Georgetown. Tracy has a single-mindedness that borders on mental illness, and a ruthlessness powered by a vicious drive that at times seems genuinely scary to behold. This uber-overachiever has been top of the honor roll for years, and has headed a number of extracurricular clubs, from being editor of the school yearbook to...you name it. She has also destroyed the life and reputation of a teacher who grew carelessly fond of her, and before Election is done she does-in another, here played by Matthew Broderick. Broderick's social sciences teacher, Mr. McAllister, senses the destructive force Tracy let loose on post-high school society might become, and he makes it his mission to sabotage her bid to become class president. First McAllister convinces the school's dopey star athlete, played Chris Klein, to oppose Tracy in the election, and later McAllister crosses the line and uses his position as head of the election committee to make certain Tracy loses. The meltdowns that occur to several key characters in Election are at times played off as funny but more than once the makers of this movie were courageous enough to let them be disturbing, particularly the scene where Tracy, believing the outcome of the election has not been in her favor, breaks down emotionally, revealing the insecure, needy figure beneath her extroverted exterior.

Election is comedy at its smartest. The writing is polished, the delivery of these stunningly perfect lines is flawless, and the humor mixes cerebral parody with at times a fun version of crudity. It's one of the best dark comedies of all time.

Ali G addicts have been fretting over the British comedian's spiraling popularity. As word of his outrageous celebrity interviews spreads--the deer-in-the-headlights gaze of his victims as they wrestle with incredulity over his audacious stupidity is itself always worth the price of admission--his pool of potential victims naturally diminishes. Not to worry: Ali G as a character has enough flexibility to make the leap to full-length film. The transition is far from perfect: few moments in Ali G Indahouse can match the unforced hilarity of Da Ali G Show. The film's biggest drawback, in fact, is the absence of the real-life personalities we know from the interview format; it's the friction between them and comic actor Sacha Baron Cohen's imposter shtick that generates so many howlers. Ali G Indahouse, in contrast, hangs on a silly plot. The setup of fictional characters interacting with Ali G simply can't have the same payoff.

Said plot is nothing more than a vehicle to subject the hip-hop poseur to a variety of ridiculous situations. He finds himself the unexpected champion in a parliamentary election and has to deal with the devious plotting of the Machiavellian Chancellor of the Exchequer (played by Charles Dance, who undergoes all manner of extreme humiliation). The result is a mix of Dumb and Dumber and Leslie Nielsen-esque pratfalls, with a hint of the Peter Sellers character in Being There. A good deal of the intended irony falls flat, and the litany of dated jokes calculated to offend all over the spectrum gets tiresome: from raunchy malapropisms to Ali G's recurrent obsession with being perceived as gay. But Baron Cohen's genius for getting under the skin of his creation remains undiluted. One aspect of special interest to Ali G fans is the light Ali G Indahouse throws on topics that are always behind the scenes in the Ali G Show context. We actually see Ali's Nana and his crib in suburban Staines, and "me Julie" (Kellie Bright) becomes a focal point as the story unwinds. Genial Borat makes an appearance (and gets dissed by Ali); we even learn the secret origin of Ali G's name (an abbreviation of Alistair Graham). It all might add up to a guilty pleasure, but hey--check yaself before ya wreck yaself. --Tom May

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing. .......2007-06-19

Well, I'm very surprised to see that this movie received as many 5 stars ratings as it did, perhaps my negative reaction to it was misguided. I have to say, and make no mistake about it, Sacha Baron Cohen is top dog when it comes to comedy so that people would buy the DVD is a given. I'm about to get Season 2 of the Ali G show in the mail and I'm sure I'll love it as much as I did Season 1. The only words that I can use to describe the movie Borat are "total joy." There's not many movies better, but the same can't be said about Indahouse. As a vehicle for his talent, this flick was a Yugo. I found it incredibly boring and I was extremely disappointed. In fact I turned it off after 50 minutes. There are no interviews (which is what made his show so great) and there is no Borat or Bruno to add to the hilarity. I'd say to take a pass on this one. Actually, if Cohen wasn't in it I'd give it only 1 star.

3 out of 5 stars bought as a gift.......2007-06-15

very campy, nowhere near as good as the show

2 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars!.......2007-06-02

After watching Borat, and loving it. I decided to watch Ali G Indahouse. From the hilarity of Borat, I expected Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G Indahouse to be just as funny, and entertaining, I was wrong. While Ali G provides some hilarious moments, there are too many slow spots in the movie. There were times I laughed by butt off, them other times the movie was so boring. If you loved "Borat" rent "Ali G Indahouse" it is not anywhere near as good as "Borat." 2 1/2 stars, worth a rental!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!.......2007-05-10

Hilarious and corny. From the genius who created Borat. Ali G!!!

Big-it up.

1 out of 5 stars You are warned! Very bad!.......2007-03-22

As a big fan of the Ali G series and the movie Borat I bought this DVD.

Horrible, Horrible Horrible.

Think of any cheesy 80's movie and this compares. Overall this movie is as bad as the pathetic Saturday Night Live movies. Remember the bad ones? Stuart Saves His Family (Al Franken), It's Pat (Julia Sweeney), The Coneheads, A Night At the Roxbury, Superstar (Molly Shannon). The Ladies Man (Tim Meadows) was a great cable viewing experience compared to this.

Borat worked because it was a collection of skits loosely tied together, Ali G was a pathetic attempt at cinema.

Oliver Stone's controversial drama about the Nixon years in the White House stars Anthony Hopkins in a genuinely great performance as the scandal-plagued president. The film attempts to wed suggestions of Nixon's formative experiences as a boy to his political connections with shady movers and shakers and finally to his self-destructive tenure in the Oval Office. The Watergate scandal is revisited rather impressionistically--it may be hard for viewers who weren't alive then to get a sense of what the crisis was about. The parade of stars playing figures in Nixon's orbit--J.T. Walsh as John Ehrlichman, James Woods as Bob Haldeman, David Hyde Pierce as John Dean, etc.--is fun if a tad distracting. Joan Allen got a well-deserved Oscar nomination as First Lady Pat Nixon, and Hopkins got one as well. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Tricky Dick meets Tricky Oliver.......2007-05-04

I like this movie. Nixon did some good things like ending the draft the clean air and water act. This movie mostly shows Nixons bad side Anthony Hopkins does a good job one highlight is when Nixon goes to the lincolin memorial and talks to antiwar proteters. Some of Oliver Stones insinuations are not believable i doubt Nixon met with JFK conspiriitors. Nixon for all its faults has good cinematography and is likley the best Nixon movie well ever see.

1 out of 5 stars great film, horrific dvd.......2007-04-07

This is a review of the 2-disc edition of the film. The extra 28 mins of
footage in Nixon has been mainly culled from the deleted scenes.
These scenes are shown in the extras and are of good quality.

What do the characters who produced this dvd do? They simply tagged
on these scenes where they belong in the theatrical version of
the film, but the quality of this extra tagged footage makes the
Zapruder film of Kennedy's assassination look like a fully remastered
digital film.

One wonders if Oliver Stone knows what they've done?

The film on disc 1 alternates between clear image quality to VHS like
images when the extra footage comes on. This is not only shocking
in the 21st century with the right technology available ("Zoolander' has
better overall image quality than this film on this dvd), but the film
isn't even in an anamorphic transfer.

It's unethical for the studios to sell such products because
it really is a way of cheating the public. Hope there will be
no plausible deniability and stonewalling here by them: don't buy this.

Send the message to the studios that they should get their act
together and release a proper cleaned up digitally remastered
full version of the film, in an anamorphic transfer.

Otherwise they should be impeached.

1 out of 5 stars What?! Not Anamorphic?!.......2007-04-04

I was ready to order this great movie based on that it's supoosed to be a "Collectors Edition"; fortunately I happened to catch the comment from AP DUPIN from France (these are the really useful comments, Thanks AP!) that the transfer for this version is not anamorphic. Are you kidding? It's the 21st century, widescreen TV's are here! Non-anamorphic DVDs should be clearly marked as NON ANAMORPHIC. At this stage of DVD development, Widescreen Version should imply "Enhanced for 16X9 TVs", unfortunately it doesn't, so widescreen owners should make sure of what they're getting before buying. I just wish that people would include more comments about the quality and characteristics of the DVD itself along with the "artistic" review. In the meantime, I'm passing on this "Collector's Edition"(?) until someone lightens up and gives this movie the DVD treatment it deserves. The movie: 5 Stars; this DVD version: 1 Star

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating and well-structured portrayal.......2007-01-21

American history has seen both its high and low moments, and one of the lowest moments in history has proven itself to be,by far,the Watergate scandal. A scandal that lessened people's respect of Richard Nixon and continues to fascinate history fanatics to this day,one would hope to see more information made about the scandal--something that director Oliver Stone pulls of well with this film.

What you have here is pretty much a detailed biography and memoir of not only the Watergate scandal, but also of the life of Richard Nixon. You receive full and interesting detail about Richard Nixon's childhood out in Southern California and how both the good and bad parts of Nixon's childhood shaped Nixon as both a person and a President. Also, alongside a well-constructive (as well as accurate view)of Nixon's loss in the 1960 Presidential election to John F. Kennedy and his loss of the 1962 California Gubernatorial election to Edmund Brown, and what caused both defeats for Nixon and how the defeats,in a way, made a negative effect on Nixon's life (good and interesting detail are given throughout these scenes, and do a good job at showing what really happened in both campaigns without a theory, something that Oliver Stone used for the John F. Kennedy assasination in the movie "JFK"). However, the real scene stealers for the Nixon biography in this film are the scenes with Anthony Hopkins and Joan Allen, with Hopkins as Richard Nixon and Allen as Patricia Nixon. If you go into this movie knowing anything about the life of Richard Nixon, you will notice that these scenes are not only accurate in how the relationship of Mr. and Mrs. Nixon is shown here and what it was that lead to the low parts of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Nixon. But,what really brings the movie to life in these scenes are Anthony Hopkins and Joan Allen. Here,Hopkins and Allen use their dramatic talents as actors in a richly executed manner that represents both Mr. and Mrs. Nixon very well. Hopkins looking and sounding like Mr. Nixon and pretty much the same thing going with Allen for Mrs. Nixon, alongside how Hopkins brings emotion into his character of Nixon when the script calls for Nixon going into how important his political career is and not wanting to give it up (something that most Nixon biographies claim about Nixon)and Allen bringing emotion into her portrayal as Mrs. Nixon by making her husband aware of how much she had sacrificed for him to have a good and successful political career (something that Mrs. Nixon did talk about openly in public from her rise to fame and before she stopped making public appearances). These scenes are resourceful by not only including important details in the life of Richard Nixon for this movie, but also in showing who Mr. and Mrs. Nixon really were and answering questions to the people who have wondered what happened to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Nixon during the most crucial parts in Mr. Nixon's life through politics (his years as Vice President and President, his run for the Presidency in 1960 and Governor of California in 1962,as well as the discovery that Nixon had been involved in the Watergate scandal).

Oliver Stone also does a really strong job at covering the entire Presidency of Richard Nixon. Here, with these scenes, you are given an honest and straightforward (not too confusing either;something that is unusual for an Oliver Stone picture)description of the Nixon
administration. It is nice to see how and when Richard Nixon ended the Vietnam War and how Nixon gave America a good foreign affairs policy, which was carried by Nixon's Chinia visit and held well by this film's detail and description of the visit that Nixon made to China (glad to see that those two important and successful parts of the Nixon administration were included here, considering the fact that most people do not remember Richard Nixon for his accomplishments as President, and that it was Watergate that ruined Nixon's Presidency and hurt Nixon's reputation as both a President and as a person). The Watergate burglary is depicted with several scenes and footage being used in this movie and showing the events in order, allowing the viewers of this film who want a good understanding of Watergate a good understanding of not only the scandal itself, but also all of the suspicious activities that came from the Nixon White House before it was discovered that Nixon had been involved in the scandal, the information that had been given to Nixon about his future because of his role in the scandal and the scandal itself which both resulted in Nixon's decision to resign, and a very intense, dramtic, and brilliant showing of what Nixon was like because of the scandal and his regrettal for being involved with it,before the movie ends with good "shortly after" information and a good tribute to Richard Nixon himself,as well.

If you are a history buff fascinated with the Watergate scandal and have always wanted to know the full detail on it,"Nixon" is the place to be. This film does a good job at being a straightforward, honest, and great film with not only all of the information anyone who watches this film would want to know about both Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal, but is also lead by talented and experienced direction, along with superb acting and a good cast of supporting actors acting alongside Anthony Hopkins and Joan Allen (Ed Harris,David Hyde Piece,Mary Steenburgen, plus several others),make "Nixon" highly informal and entertaining, one of the best history based films to be made, and,of course,a must see film.

Documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (Don't Look Back) and Chris Hegedus shot behind-the-scenes at command central for Bill Clinton's 1992 election campaign and came up with this film. You won't find the kind of daily damage-control and skirt-chasing indirectly alleged in Primary Colors, but the filmmakers do give us a strong sense of the uphill battle of a presidential campaign. The center of the film is really James Carville, who steered the machine for Clinton's '92 run and who comes across in this film as a deeply passionate, complex, and somehow timeless man who could have fit into any chapter of American history. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars "Brilliant".......2007-01-15

This is a great film to see what is conducted behind the scenes to win a presidential campaign. Great film for students to see two political campaign managers at work. This film also showed these two guy's human side and at the same time funny.

3 out of 5 stars I think its been misrepresented somewhat.......2006-12-02

This is not a film of the inner sanctum of Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign as claimed but a film of his head campaign managers office. You will see some discussions on issues. Nothing very controversial. You never see any real important decisions made and you see almost nothing of Bill Clinton.

If you are interested in elections you probably will get some feel of how a modern campaign feels but little about much else.

1 out of 5 stars no title.......2006-03-13

Well, I sure could have skipped this one. I well remember the critics raving over this on television, but why is beyond me. Mostly, I was just plain bored. There simply was no depth at all, just bunches of short takes and wise cracks. Bush was just downright dirty, making insults and slurs all over the place, something I do not consider an appropriate attitude in a man who would be President. And it is interesting that in one of the reviews it was noted that Mary Matalen, the deputy manager of Bush's campaign and very acid-tongued (maybe she wrote some of the slurs Bush used), is now the wife of James Carville, top strategist for Clinton's campaign, and basically the star of the movie. But all the scenes were focused on the funny quip, the bon mot, no long scenes of the nitty-gritty work, or any answers to any questions about Clinton either, for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars The start and the end of political documentary..........2006-01-21

Though 'Primary' introduced the political campaigning doco, 'The War Room' surely is the apex of the genre.

Part of the highlight of the doco is Stephanopoulos, who is captured as he is - preening himself and agreeing with others ideas/suggestions.

As with the Clinton campaign, Carville steals the show. Whatever your convictions (and mine are on the other side of politics) it is impossible not to respect Carville for his character and beliefs.

I dont want to spoil it for you, but Billary wins...

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes you need to fill in the gaps.......2005-12-30

While I found the glimpses into the inner workings of the 1992 presidential campaign of Bill Clinton to be interesting and well worth watching, it was a bit disappointing. Campaign manager James Carville and Communications Director George Stephanopoulos demonstrate their skills at political maneuvering. Even though Bill Clinton was a masterful politician, these two men got him elected. While both of them show their hard-boiled political fronts, they also show their human sides. Stephanopoulos openly talks about how nervous he is and Carville cries when he thanks the staff for their hard work.
There are two main weaknesses to the presentation. The first is that many parts will be incomprehensible to anyone who does not already know a great deal about the events. For example, there is mention of the relationship between Carville and Mary Matalin, but it is never truly explained. The incongruity of the political strategists of Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican George Bush having a romantic relationship in the middle of a presidential campaign is not emphasized as much as it should. If you were not aware of the depth of that relationship and who they are, then that segment will be little more than a flyby.
The second main weakness is that your perspective never reaches the level of the "fly on the wall." At all times, it is clear that you are seeing into the campaign only to the extent that they want you to see. It would have been better if they at least sometimes made it appear that you were seeing workings of the campaign staff that they would have preferred not be seen. I was especially disappointed with the response to the Gennifer Flowers incident. Clinton and his campaign staff handled it very deftly, yet we really don't see what they did. This contrasts with an incident later in the campaign when Stephanopoulos fields a call from someone who is threatening to expose what they claim is another Clinton infidelity. In this case, he supposedly fathered a child with a black woman. Stephanopoulos tells the person politely but firmly that:

*) At this point no one cares.
*) If you break the story, you will never work in the Democratic party again.

I found this video fascinating, but I remembered and understood the events that unfolded. If you for any reason do not know the fundamentals of what is happening, then you will spend a great deal of time puzzled by what you see.

The right to vote represents one of the strongest elements of democracy within the United States. With his documentary American Blackout, Ian Inaba shows that while voting is a right many Americans take for granted, it's something that's still not a given for many of America's citizens. With his thought-provoking film--which won the Special Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival--Inaba shows through interviews, documents, and startling images of African Americans waiting in the rain (only to be falsely told they're too late to vote) how districts are systemically trying to exclude blacks from the voting process. By focusing on controversial congresswoman Cynthia McKinney--who has been a vocal opponent of President George W. Bush and his administration--and a few others, Inaba doesn't lose the viewer with too many subjects. Whether or not your political views align with McKinney's, it's difficult not to question some of her opponents' motives for twisting her words, especially pertaining to 9/11. Though no one will be surprised that this film was shot on a low budget, the lack of bells and whistles doesn't take anything away from the production value, which is compelling in its stark reality. --Jae-Ha Kim

Description

Most people have heard of the voting irregularities that marred the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. Some even know of the resulting challenges to the electoral votes by African-American congressional representatives. However, because the mainstream media shies away from reporting cases of imperiled democracy the public is left to believe these stories are at worst insignificant rumors or at best one-off incidents that result from an overburdened election system.

American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of disenfranchisement witnessed from 2000 to 2004 while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who not only took an active role in investigating these election debacles but also found herself in the middle of one after publicly questioning the Bush Administration about the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Some call Cynthia McKinney a civil rights leader among the ranks of Shirley Chisholm and Malcolm X. Others call her a conspiracy theorist and a "looney." American Blackout gains unprecedented access to one of the most controversial and dangerous politicians in America and examines the contemporary tactics used to control our democratic process and silence political dissent.

5 out of 5 stars How American elections are stolen.......2007-05-30

AMERICAN BLACKOUT is an extraordinary documentary that focuses on the election loss of 2002 of Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D. Ga.) and the regaining of her seat in 2004. In a larger context AMERICAN BLACKOUT is an expose of how Republican operatives conspired to steal the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 by Black voter suppression and the theft of Black votes. In addition to Cynthia McKinney, also featured is Greg Palast, author of THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY.

5 out of 5 stars The power that be really don't like Cynthia McKinney .......2007-05-13

Behind Ron Paul Cynthia McKinney is one of my favorite representatives out there. I loved to watch here on cspan and was sad when she was not reelected. But now I know why and it is sham full that the republicans and democrats teemed up the silence here.

Watch this movie if your canadian because with the party thats in power now will be using the very same tactics .

5 out of 5 stars The more she grates, the more America needs people like her........2007-03-23

Cynthia McKinney is - like so few of her fellow politicians - clear, frank, honest and uncomprimising. She may rattle a few cages, upset some folks on the Hill, but America's children need to see people like her to realize that there is a way to buck the trend, to fight for yours and others rights and to do it selflessly.

Highly recommended. I especially liked the clips of a grotesquely coiffered Tucker Carlsen repleat with bow-tie (soooo tacky...) pontificating about the 'outrageous' Cynner. I often wonder if he ever had to take one for the team....

5 out of 5 stars Bush Crew With The Help Of Media DISENFRANCHISE BLACK VOTERS!.......2007-02-24

The villians are smiling happily as they've disenfranchised the black voters while the Big Media Dumbed Down the citizenry. This has all been done for a very good cause: Big Business' bottom line profits, and WAR IS THEIR RACKET. More power to the crony capitalist, the big media, and the military industrial/congressional complex. Congresswomen Cynthia McKinney took on the enemy of the American citizens. The price was either: go along and take the people for what she knew was a ride, OR FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS.
She questioned the Bush Regime's involvement in events that led to 9/11. A recent Zogby poll has over 40% of New Yorkers asking her same questions. Still no answear! The Republicans spent One Million Dollars investigating a blue dress & $3,000 on 9/11! They don't want the truth found! The family members of 9/11 who tragically lost their loved ones WANT AN INVESTIGATION! WANT THE TRUTH!
Kathryn Harris and Blackwell fixed the elections and were REWARDED by the GOP!
Gore won in 2000. A USA GOVERNMENT COUP took place in Florida with the suppression of the black vote. It happenned again in 2004 with Ohio.
Good books on this are Greg Palast's Armed Madhouse & Mark Crispin's Fooled Again.
The Extras in this DVD are good including: Capitol Hill Police Officiers Speak Out On McKinney Incident.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

We love this movie & to get it here at such a great savings too! We received it in perfect condtion & the movie is wonderfully funny. We like the extra bonus features also!

4 out of 5 stars Better than it has a right to be.......2007-01-22

I was expecting a little bit of fluff, but "Poster Boy" turns out to have an involving story and some wonderful performances. I actually didn't know how it was going to turn out until the very end. This is a low-budget, independent film. The camerawork may be a little unsteady (although I thought it gave an up-to-date feel to the picture) and the sound may be a little erratic, but I found this story to be gripping from beginning to end. Well worth seeing to decide on your own.

4 out of 5 stars Yay or Nay? An undecided vote........2007-01-11

I recently bought this DVD with some apprehension, because I had heard varying opinions on it. The verdict: Good story & acting, but flawed. The film has the hand-held camera feel of a Steven Bochco T.V. series, which, depending on your preference, either brings realism or detracts from the dramatic scenes. Actually, this film felt like more of a "dramedy" than a drama---humor kept creeping in to certain scenes. I empathized with Matt Newton's character of Henry Kray, a closeted son of a high-profile senator. He conveyed the agony that his character felt, being constantly controlled (or abused) by his father and frustrated by having to hold others back at arm's length & cloaking himself in anonymity, particularly Jack Noseworthy's character of Anthony, a liberal activist whose personal involvement with Henry becomes far more complicated than he would've ever imagined. Karen Allen injects the same appealing feistiness into her wife-of-a-senator role just as she had done as Harrison Ford's leading lady years ago in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Michael Lerner makes his character a man you'd love to hate, someone who expects all--his family & entourage--to jump whenever he snaps his fingers, to dance to his tune. His portrayal is both a blessing and a curse--I felt he was TOO easy to despise. Yet, I'm sure there are real political figures who get "lost in the game"; they lose sight of who, and what, is more important in their lives. In politics, image & morality are everything, and as this story demonstrates, the "game" can have brutal consequences. The Skip character--who comes to retrieve the wayward son--is a spineless character, a hypocrite, a brown-noser. Just when you think he has befriended Henry, he turns on him near the end, siding with the father on how "disgusting" Henry's lifestyle is, although he accompanied Henry to a gay bar earlier on!
However, that coming-out kiss that Henry & Anthony share before a stunned press conference--and senator Jack Kray--made me want to cheer. Jack Kray DESERVED to have his family walk out on him; in a way, this is the film's weak point, as it becomes too obvious that the story is coming to this conclusion. Some plot points are too methodical; I could see them coming a mile away, and this is the movie's main flaw.
This movie has a strong theme reflecting on our current headlines: the closeted children of political figures, or even the outing of those officials themselves. If you can forgive its slight budget and obvious plot twists, "Poster Boy" can be a powerful drama.

4 out of 5 stars Solid story line, with significant current implications.......2007-01-01

This is a nicely done story that could easily be about major U.S. politicians of today. While most of the acting is monolithic, Matt Newton presents a gut-wrenching emotional scene that "made" the film for me, while Karen Allen supports the entire film with a character having many facets and plenty of depth. Michael Lerner's character is easily hated, and rightly so, for a stunning portrayal of a do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do, belligerent, self-absorbed politician.

4 out of 5 stars Not About Underwear.......2006-12-28

"POSTER BOY"

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Poster Boy" (HereTV!) is a timely, accomplished, wonderfully acted little film that will be released on DVD on November 11. The story of a closeted son of a right wing politician from North Carolina who becomes sexually and romantically involved with a liberal gay activist has plenty to watch.
Henry is a determined college student and the son of U.S. Senator Jack Kray (Michael Lerner) who is waging a battle for reelection. Henry who cannot abide his father falls for Anthony (Jack Noseworthy) who is a young, angry, radical queer activist whom he meets at a party that he and his (girl)friend Izzie crash. At the party there is a sexual liaison between the two guys and Henry realizes that a spark has been ignited. Anthony, upon discovering who Henry's father is, unites with a campus group which plans a disruption of the Congressman's campaign visit to be held on campus. Through mysterious circumstances and an amazing twist, Izzie is hit by the Senator's car as it approaches the college ad what ensues is fascinating. The climax of the movie is full of surprises as family values and the issues of love and honesty explode and are tested.
The film plays homage to the radical queer groups of our past and aligns itself to the political problems of today. There is a certain parallelism to the story of Mary Cheney and the senator's wife. Kray, the senator is nasty, rude, and hypocritical and the rest of the characters are beautifully developed.
The acting is incredible, the photography which is sometimes murky adds to the tone of the theme of the movie and I found an explanation as to why politicians cannot be trusted. There is a lot here to think about.
When I first heard a movie entitled "Poster Boy" was coming out, I have to admit I was expecting a comedy, perhaps something about Marky Mark and Calvin Klein underwear ads. What a surprise this movie turned out to be. Many of the gay films lately have been comedies so I was pleasantly surprised as I began watching this. It is a amazing film-moreso because it deals with the way we live today.

2 out of 5 stars Paint-by-the-numbers.......2006-12-05

I've never been a fan of Karen Allen, but she is the sole bright spot of this film. In fact, she is sublime. The acting is first-rate throughout, no real problems there, but the charactes are two-dimensional (except Allen is giving added dimension to hers - in fact, worthy of an Academy Award) and even cliche. Publicly in the closet young gay man seeks to have his relationships (non-clinging variety) while dealing within the family structure demanded of a celebrity flag-waving, banner-toting super-conservative father (naturally, the boy wouldn't have a socially liberal senator for a father; goes without saying). Too bad the senator didn't go out hunting with friends - ha ha. But unfortunately for the boy, he is outed at the same instant he is intent on outing himself, publicly, by a man he has come to know biblically and then sought to forget by abandoning that morning. Spurned older man (not exactly good-looking, more odd-looking, OUT actor Noseworthy) seeks vengeance in the best way he knows how - considering he is also a political activist for gay rights. How's that for a coincidence? Unfortunately much screentime is devoted to a tiresome character, a youngish woman who'd contracted AIDS from her boyfriend, and her adenoidal judgments and complaints get on one's nerves. She does, however, ironically have some nice moments with Karen Allen's wife-of-the-senator character, in yet another series of wild coincidences to bring all the characters together in one room at one time. The movie is long and dull and predictable, however the finale is rather nice, making one wonder why the ending was so nicely done while the majority of the film was paint-by-the-numbers.
