In Japan cartoons and animated features do not encompass fantasy or slapstick personification of animals, but instead delve into the wondrous serendipity and the dark purposes of human interaction. Kite is a prime example of their expression within this genre. With its darkly disturbing La Femme Nikita-style story line, this film begs to be more than the 45-minute event that it is, rivaling the live-action works of Luc Besson and even John Woo. The story involves a college student, Sawa, whose family was brutally murdered. Sawa is adopted by Mr. Akai, the police detective investigating the case, and a twist occurs when we find that Mr. Akai has trained and utilized Sawa as an assassinating angel of vengeance to eliminate the undesirables able to slip through the net of the legal system. In the undertaking of one of these missions, Sawa meets Oburi, another orphan trained like her for the same purpose, and she is placed in the classic position of having to make a life-changing decision. Insights into the truth about Sawa's past are revealed through abstract flashbacks as the film progresses at maniacally breakneck speed, with intense gun battles and blood and guts galore. Kite is exquisitely animated by Yasuomi Umetsu and accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack composed by An Fu, and the only flaw is that it could have been expanded by exploring more of its profound emotional revelations. --Hector V. Barrientos-Bullock
Description
Sawa may seem innocent and naïve, but don't be fooled. She's a cold-blooded killer, and if you're on the wrong side of the law, you may be her next target. Not content to just watch as the imperfect justice system frees more criminals each day, a detective trained Sawa to be his instrument of justice. Now she will go to any length to execute her targets.

Kite.......2007-06-12
I haven't seen this movie yet. From what reviews I've read it is a must see. It is a shame that Kite is less than fifty minutes. I've learned recently that this movie was cut down because of its subject matter. I think this was an unwise move. This movie should only be purchased by people 18 years and up. I think there should be a voting poll posted on this site and on any anime site where you can buy this movie. We should have the option of buying this movie in its full uncut 90 minute to 100 minute version. From what a friend told me, the movie was cut in half down to the 45 minutes that you see now. I know when any movie is edited it takes away from the storyline.
If anyone knows were to purchase this uncut, unrated extended version for a good price let me know. I want to be the judge on how bad or good this movie really is.
Just as good as Mezzo but still just like Mezzo: edited version=good action plus plot development.......2007-06-11
First and foremost Amazon doesn't sell the unedited version of Kite. So, I should say don't bother looking here since the edited version leaves out the huge sex scenes that are, in this anime movie, crucial to the plot and character development but there is a catch to one of the sex scenes as they include an 11-13 year old ,Sawa (the main character). Other than that, I enjoyed this movie, unedited. It has good action with lots of gore, blood, and sex scenes. Another thing I liked about it was the variety of symbolism. Such as Sawa's earrings. One thing I disliked about this movie was the voice dub. The dub could have been better. It seems for hentai shows or movies they always get the mediocre actors. So, all in all, if you are not comfortable with sex scenes, hentai in general, animated cp, or a little more blood and gore. Then invest your money in the edited version. If none of those things bother, then invest your money and time in the unedited version.
If hentai was more like this, then I would gladly watch more.
Solo para adultos.......2007-05-25
Una excelente película en la cual se destaca la fluidez de la animación, los personajes tienen conflictos internos y motivos ocultos. Espere al final un giro inesperado en la trama.
Recomendada sin lugar a dudas
OUCH!!! ...And I thought "ARMITAGE III" was bad!.......2006-09-02
*
It's a rare anime feature that moves me to rate it with the lowest marks possible, but this one accomplished the once-thought impossible!
The premise sounds intriguing enough: A girl left orphaned after the double homicide of her parents is taken in (in more ways than one) by a couple of psychos with vigilante desires who groom her to become their instrument of assassination. Their targets tend to be high-profile members of society & public figures who have a tendency to stay just enough out of reach of the law to prevent being legally apprehended and paying the necessary penalties for their criminal misdeeds (child sexual abuse and related activities being high on their list). But suspicion mounts that she may be just being manipulated like a puppet and that the people she's being instructed to kill (all men, of course) may not necessarily be everything she is being informed that they are.
Unfortunately, the execution (no pun intended) of the story & action, the lack of character development, the limited (almost non-existent) background & motivational information on the girl's "mentor(s)", the totally contrived plot devices, and the highly & irritatingly irrational action sequences (extremely absurd even by typical "anime" standards) makes this feature-length OAV the biggest animation TURKEY I have ever had the privilege(?) of viewing. Even the (very lame) "fan service" scenes cannot make up for its lack of interesting story and action. (Apparently, this is not the true "unrated" version as indicated, since reviewers make references to more graphic & disturbing "hentai" scenes. Still doesn't change my opinion of the whole thing, however.) Okay, I'll admit that it scores a couple of minor points for its visuals & animation, but that's about the only thing of any material substance I can come away with from this loser. In essence, if anime features were rides at the carnival, "KITE" would be the merry-go-round -- without any accompanying lights or music.
Normally, something clocking in at only 45 minutes would get a point for "fair consideration" from me because of the feature's not being given enough time to really allow an indepth story to unfold (e.g., "PLASTIC LITTLE," which I actually like, despite its oversaturation of needless "fan service" which serves no purpose), but I give NO such consideration for "KITE" -- I believe that any additional amount of time given to this animated drama would have made it only that much worse than it already is.
Not an outright "zero-stars" junker, but I cannot in all good conscience rate it anything higher than a "one-and-a-half" at best.
Promising, but the ending ruined the movie........2006-08-07
To be honest, I found this movie because of the hentai, then decided to buy it for the same reason. While the action and hentai was alright, I followed the story pretty well.
But towards the end I was getting excited, I was thinking "Awesome, after all of that, I wonder what the outcome will be like." and next thing I know I find myself depressed and confused at the ending. I understand that it's a dark movie and it was suppose to end dark, but you'd figure after the characters went through so much that they would at least deserve some kind of peace or happiness. Instead you're left wondering what happen after the movie ended. (Although you can probably come to some conclusion as to what happen.) But it's still annoying to sit through all that for basicly nothing.

The bonnes femmes of Claude Chabrol's film are four shop girls at a small appliance store in Paris. Good-time girl Bernadette Lafont spends her nights in empty flirtations with boorish womanizers, while social-climbing Lucile Saint-Simon withers under the disdainful gaze of her boyfriend's haughty parents. Seemingly confident Stéphane Audran secretly follows her dream of singing on the stage (losing her composure when she recognizes her friends in the audience), and demure Clotilde Joano holds out for the romantic notion of pure, innocent love. It's her story that Chabrol favors when she falls under the gaze of a motorcycle-riding stalker who finally reveals himself to be a shy, lovesick suitor, a Prince Charming in black leather. Les Bonnes Femmes was a flop when released, but has since been embraced as one of Chabrol's best films and a masterpiece of the French new wave. There's a breezy naturalism that invigorates the film: easy, seemingly spontaneous ensemble performances, the immediacy of shooting on location, and a loose, episodic story full of rich detail. But this is no urban fairy tale: the dreams of these girls are frustrated by a tawdry and brutal world in a shocking, sad finale. Never callous or dismissive, there's a fragile beauty to Chabrol's troubled portrait as he stubbornly holds out hope for these dreamers in a delicately melancholy coda. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite french films of the 1960's.......2007-07-01
If you are looking for a film featuring nightlife in paris you can't go wrong with les bonnes femmes - a movie which traces the paths of a group of young french women as they look for love and struggle through their working hours - it is also about the men who stock them... Chabrol's wonderful black and white movie would influence countless films to come- and perhaps he would never equal its poignancy again.. For me this movie does to paris what Fellini's movies did for rome - absolutely stunning..
Les Bonnes Femmes.......2007-06-27
Brimming with the breezy energy of Parisian nightlife, Chabrol's long-neglected New Wave masterwork maps the dreamy desires and frustrated aspirations of four young women bored by their mundane job in a deathly quiet appliance store. Homing in on the tawdry emptiness of '60s urban swingers, the hypocrisies of respectable society, and the loutish womanizing of male sexual predators, Chabrol satirizes the times while lavishing tremendous sympathy on his female characters. Shot on location in the hip, fast-moving City of Lights, "Les Bonnes Femmes" is a perfect marriage of splendid acting and intriguing turns of events.
Ultimately Creepy but Great!.......2006-02-12
I had never heard of this movie when it was recommended to me by Amazon. I bought it not knowing what to expect and, WOW, what a great film!
A group of young single Parisian women work as shopgirls by day and look for Mr. Right by night. One of the young ladies, Jacqueline, is smitten by a mysterious tall, dark and handsome man who she keeps seeing on his motorcycle. They finally meet at a public swimming pool when he comes to her rescue as she is being dunked under the water by a couple of uncouth male acquaintances.
There is plenty of foreshadowing that should tip off the viewer as to how the relationship between Jacqueline and the motorcyclist will end. If you don't pick up on the foreshadowing, however, you might enjoy the film more as you will be even more shocked by it's ending.
The Verdict for Pure Love........2005-10-28
This film is THE BEST of Chabrol. It is full of innumerable discreet symbolic details that make it a true masterpiece - Carmen's poster, motorbike number 666, the visit to the Zoo where the company is shown FROM the cage, Madam Louise mysterious fetish that turns out to be a cloth with the blood of the executed rapist, the number of girls - four, and many other incredible gems. I agree with a previous reviewer about the strong Cocteau spirit ever-present. Four girls as four temperaments - sanguine, phlegmatic, melancholic and choleric, Jacqueline is of course the most dreamy and melancholic, looking for the pure love, as sanguine Jane, a disillusioned libertine, is mocking her with arrogant despise. Rita, phlegmatic girl is working so hard to win the marriage, the best scene is when she, a future perfectly bourgeois wife, is terrified by the speech that she has to make about Michelangelo to her groom's parents. Ginette, the choleric girl sings in a questionable establishment, and she has ambitions to become an actress. Jacqueline is so above these vain pursuits, she is so sublime in her idea of love, her incredible romance is unfolding so perfectly - she finally is with her Prince Charming, who embodies everything she ever dreamed about. Then the end is absolutely astonishing, I believe it's an expression of Chabrol's strong opinion about the destiny of such idea of love, along with the destruction of the woman who beholds it.
And the final scene only stresses the conclusion - again it's showing us a naive dreamer, reminding of Jaqueline, eyes wide open, mouth semi-open, she is so happy to be chosen by a man seemingly representing her dreams, she is already giving herself to him, but we only see his brutish neck and no face at all, for such a long episode! We read everything on her face and we know NOTHING about what he wants, any dark violent desires that he hides. The mood of this scene sends a strong signal that her sweet dreams of love will be brutally ruined by the ruthless reality of dominating male desire. I think this is an epitome of Chabrol's philosophy of the boudoir, condemning the pure innocent romantic sentimental melancholic love to death.
Antecedent of Mr. Goodbar?.......2004-11-29
I watched this movie last night and its ending has haunted me. The ending was quite powerful, but predictable. In the last scene, however, with new characters, the director seems to be trying to convey a message. To me it said, in the tradition of "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" to be careful about strangers, not to be trusting or naive, and not to wear rose-colored romantic glasses--not to see what you want to see, but what is really there.

A Beautiful Box for the Beautiful Brigitte.......2006-06-17
Besides her great beauty, Brigitte Bardot is mostly known for her work & relationship with director Jean Luc Godard- and that might set some up for a dissapointment with this set. None of the films featured here approach "Contempt" or even her role in Roger Vadim's "And God Created Woman", these are basically cute French romantic comedies that are light, fluffy and full of sexual suggestion. For fans of the actress and fun films from the 60's, you'd really enjoy this set. I sat down to watch them without expectations (beyond having fun) and I wasn't dissapointed. It's sort of like seeing a lesser Marilyn Monroe film- it'll never be as satisfying as "Some Like It Hot", but it's still fun. Not to mention, Brigitte's carefree beauty and charm makes each of these very watchable.
The actually box set is a little flimsy, but will hold up on your shelf just fine if you take care of it. It's a very pretty blue box covered in stars with pin-ups of Ms. Bardot taken from the films. Highly recommended for fans of Brigitte (obviously!) silly romantic comedies, French films from the 1960's and collectors of classic and off-beat DVD sets. Don't go in expecting anything more than a good time, and you'll be sure to have one.

I will not reveiw the movie itself because everybody has different taste. If you are reading this review you probably like the movie anyway and know what it is about.
The DVD version of this release would be for fans looking to expand thier DVD collection or those who do not have these titles on VHS or laserdisk. If you have it on another format these DVD releases don't have much to entice you.
The film is of good quality, but nothing spectacular.

Product Description

boring.......2004-04-18
Believe it or not, the best parts of this movie are its credits. Shown at the very beginning and the very end, they at least reveal Brigitte's lovely moving mouth. In between its very unconvincing plot makes watching rightout boring. Even Bardot's brief nude appearance does not change that.
Bizarre - but Great!.......2002-05-06
It's very apparent that this film was made in the '60's, based upon the attitude of the main character that sex = love, and his selfish attitude toward relationships with women. Brigitte Bardot is stunningly beautiful, and entraps this guy with her guiles. In the guise of dictating to her his exploits and affairs with other women, Bardot actually turns the table on this creep, and is clearly the aggressor in the relationship. Bardot is more than just a pretty face, and carries this film with her talent. At the peak of her beauty, she can also act, as well as develop her character. Highly recommend this one!
More Than Meets the Eye.......2001-02-07
While the chauvinists can't get past her face, there is much more to Bardot.
In this film she displays great wit, charm and timing. And Trintignant is excellent as the amoral guy that goes through women quicker than a flu victim through a bag of Kleenex.
The flashbacks are great. The irony just flows.
Well worth a look.
