This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A Great Lie Lesson for Pinocchio.......2007-05-22
I love Pinocchio when he lies. His nose grew and grew longer and sure gives me an idea how creative author has. It's original powerful animation that Walt Disney has to present. Also I must add when Pinocchio asking the creator Why, Why, and Why and suddenly I asked my parents why Pinocchio asking Why's. A perfect family animation film.
Was my father favorite carttoon !.......2007-04-13
My father loved Disney 's Pinocchio as a child and I still had the video tape of the carttoon in his memory !
My least favorite Disney animation.......2007-04-09
I've enjoyed a lot of classics by Walt himself - Dumbo, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp etc. But I just cannot bring myself to like Pinocchio. I'm sorry, but it looked like was made for babies, or four or five year olds at the most. Although, even at the age of five, I found it too childish. I've heard some reviewers say that this film is quite dark, but I just cannot believe that! Firstly, they tried too hard on the animation. It was far too saturated. The colour is all screwed up. The acting is poor. The only good well-developed character is Jiminy Cricket. The other characters are very underdeveloped, so I didn't really care what happened to them. They made Pinocchio really sickly sweet, and I didn't feel for him, he was just annoying. The plot is ridiculous. It was just Pinocchio and Jiminy running into one problem after another. Oh, and the donkey scene is not disturbing - it's just plain stupid!
All in all, Pinocchio is only of interest to VERY young children. Otherwise, do not waste your money. If you want a good family film, rent Amblimation's 'Balto' instead.
ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS NEEDS AN UPGRADED EDITION!.......2007-03-13
This is one of Disney's finest animated features and it has not had a complete restoration done!! Mind boggling! The print here looks like it is direct from VHS. I hope there is a 2 disc Platinum edition coming soon?
My Favorite Classic Disney from Years Past.......2007-02-22
This movie is a beautifully-made masterpiece that, very unfortunately, seems to be overlooked sometimes because of other old Disney movies that were made around that time (like Snow White). However, of all the "old" Disney movies (made before the era of Eisner), this is the one that most hits the mark for me. Not only is it an interesting story with involving characters, but the overlooked soundtrack is also quite wonderful. "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" is an old favorite of mine, and not to mention "Little Wooden Head" is a catchy little tune. This is my favorite of the oldies-but-goodies because not only does it completely hit the mark, but it doesn't rely on the old cliche of "princess captured by evil stepmother and then saved later on by a nameless Prince Charming who has no personality whatsoever". Though some of those movies are good, like Snow White, some of them are dull like Cinderella, and this movie doesn't make you make that choice.
Now I haven't always been a fan of this movie; this is more of a "grown-up" movie than many of the others that were made around that time. This is a darker tale than the likes of Snow White, and a more intense and involving one than movies like Cinderella. It also doesn't follow the oft-degraded Disney Formula, because there's no real cookie-cutter "bad guy". And since there's no real cookie-cutter bad guy, it makes it all the more interesting to see four or five villains make their entrances and exits, more like a real-life fairy tale than others. None of the villains "gets what he deserves", like in most Disney movies where they fall to their deaths.
That isn't to say that the other Disney movies aren't good. That is, however, to say that this Disney movie was ahead of its time in its innovations in realistic story developments. Granted, the story itself isn't that realistic, but we all know the story, and can take it for granted. And I'm not saying that the film is COMPLETELY underrated either. Just about everybody's heard the song "When You Wish Upon A Star", and it truly is a wonderfully sweet tune.
Speaking of which, Jiminy Cricket is a masterpiece of a character if there ever was one. And there are plenty of other great characters in this movie too: the old puppet master, Geppetto, who just wants a real boy; Cleo and Figaro, the domesticated fish and jealous cat; and of course many great villains, including Honest John, Stromboli, Lampwick, and of course Monstro, most of whom are also used for on-the-spot comic relief. But despite the comic relief, there are definitely some scenes that are too scary for the youngsters, including quite a few edgy scenes including the mad old puppeteer Stromboli. However, it's not ALL dark, which is good. There are some very fun, and some laugh-out-loud funny, scenes, both for the youngsters and for the adults.
Overall, this truly is a great movie for anybody, but especially for those who have ever been through the struggle of being a real boy. :)

The award-winning 1937 version of Kipling's classic Captains Courageous finds spoiled-rotten brat Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) well on the way to becoming a horrible adult, under the illusion that money can buy all happiness. The little monster falls off a cruise ship, and is fished out of the drink by Portuguese fisherman Manuel (Spencer Tracy) and brought back to his fishing boat. Though the overprivileged lad initially chafes at being put to work aboard the smelly vessel, he eventually learns the value of a day's work and learns lessons in life that make him a functional person and bring him several steps closer to manhood. Despite Tracy's indeterminate accent, he excels in his role as the boy's friend, and enthusiastic performances from the rest of the cast bring this coming-of-age tale to life. It's a film that has lost none of its sentimental appeal (or occasional hamminess) over the years and should have an all-ages appeal to fans of Hollywood classics. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
The fishing schooner We're Here has just pulled up a different kind of fish: rich, 10-year-old Harvey Cheyne, who tumbled off the side of a sleek ocean liner. Harvey will have to wait months before the We're Here returns to harbor, months that will transform him from a spoiled whiner into an honorable young man - all because of the life lessons he learns from Manuel, the humble fisherman who befriends him. From Rudyard Kipling's classic, Captains Courageous thrills with its seagoing action, grand scale and all-star cast. But what gives it full-masted magnificence is the chemistry between Freddie Bartholomew (Harvey) and Spencer Tracy (Manuel). Tracy won his first Best Actor Academy Award?* for his towering portrait of the father we all wish for: virile, patient, wise and protective. Set sail for cinema glory.
Customer Reviews:
Captain Corageous.......2007-06-20
Based on a Rudyard Kipling story, this heartwarming adventure saga follows the transformation of a bratty pantywaist into a decent young man under the tutelage of Tracy's gentle fisherman. Bartholomew is a natural playing the self-centered child of privilege, and really clicks with Tracy, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as the sensitive Manuel (though he hated putting on an Iberian accent). Absorbing for viewers of any age, "Captains" is a rousing tale whose bittersweet climax will not leave a dry eye on deck.
for Schooner Lovers.......2007-06-12
The story's sappy and the "special effects" are laughable for today's audiences BUT you can't beat the action scenes of sailing schooners. Many of those ships are gone now although some are still sailing, like Ernestina in New Bedford and Adventure in Gloucester. Movies like this that have irreplaceable footage of these ships provide a glimpse into the life of Grand Banks fishermen.
Kipling rewritten.......2007-05-23
In my opinion, this is the among the worst movie adaptations of a great novel! The writers thought they could improve upon Kipling's great story by killing the Mother, ignoring the great relationships between Harvey, Captain Disko and his son, creating a private school scene, to name some of the horrific changes to this great story of the sea and of redemption.
captains courageous.......2007-04-03
even being an old movie it is still one of the great movies
A classic available now on DVD.......2007-03-21
This classic story of a spoiled boy learning to be a man is timeless. The story is simple; a spoiled rich boy is on his way to Europe with his overindulgent, and widowed, father when he falls overboard from the ship. He is rescued by Portugese fisherman Spencer Tracy, who would win the Academy Award for his role of Manuel, the fisherman. The boy is brought aboard the fishing schooner, captained by Lionel Barrymore, not yet crippled by rheumatoid arthritis. Mickey Rooney plays the captain's son who serves as a foil between the boy and the crew, especially John Carradine who would prefer to throw him overboard as a bad luck Jonah. The sailing scenes are among the best ever in movies. Freddie Bartholomew played the boy Harvey in one of a number of starring roles that made him the most successful child actor after Shirley Temple.

One thing Shirley Temple did extremely well (besides sing, dance, and act) was turn the cranky cuddly. She'd done it effectively, two years prior, in 1935's The Little Colonel with grandfather Lionel Barrymore. Now in Heidi she turns her reclusive grumpy grandfather, Adolf (Jean Hersholt), into the loving sort she knows he really is. Heidi is an orphan, dumped into the Swiss Alps by self-centered Aunt Dete (Mady Christians) onto a grandfather she's never known, but they soon learn to love each other. Heidi's mercenary aunt returns and sells (!) Heidi to a cruel woman, appropriately named Fraulein Rottenmeier (Mary Nash). Adolf sets out on a quest to find his granddaughter. Meanwhile, Heidi charms Klara Sesemann (Marcia Mae Jones), the wealthy handicapped girl in Fraulein Rottenmeier's care. Look for a delightful Arthur Treacher as the Sesemann butler. There's a cute fantasy production number, "In Our Little Wooden Shoes," featuring Temple in various period costumes. Throughout Heidi, Temple is, as always, wonderfully joyful. This is perhaps the best-known rendering of the popular children's story by Johanna Spyri (it's been filmed some 10 times). --N.F. Mendoza
Description
Shirley Temple in a role that seems custom-made for her, portrays the spirited young heroine of the popular children's novel, giving her a rich emotional depth and infinite charm. When her aunt tires of caring for her, orphan Heidi is taken into the Swiss mountains to live with her gruff grandfather (Jean Hersholt), a hermit who comes to adore her. But the aunt returns to steal Heidi away, selling her to a family whose invalid daughter (Marcia Mae Jones) needs a companion. Bullied by an evil governess (Mary Nash), Heidi still charms the entire household and never stops trying to return to her beloved grandfather.
Customer Reviews:
great kids movie!.......2007-06-15
After being totally dissapointed by the Emma Bolger version of Heidi, I purchased this one. It was beautiful. Sweet, innocent, funny, even a little sad. All the characters did an excellant job. Children don't need high paced drama to be impressed. They giggled and wiggled over parts such as Heidi milking the goat, the monkeying around, and the sleigh chase near the end. And don't forget Andrew trying to milk "Bearly" either! I am a mother with six children. We all loved this movie. I would recomend it to anyone who wants a bit of innocent entertainment.
Awesome!.......2007-04-06
WE ALL LOVE SHIRLEY TEMPLE! Espicially Heidi. I treasure this movie so much. Now for the actors, Shirley Temple was great for Heidi. Totally great. What a cute girl. Jean Hersholt was wonderful when he turned out to be a christiane. He is a great actor. Arthur Treacher is hilarious for Andrews. He is absoulutely wonderful. Helen Westley was very pretty for Blind Anna. I also like her soft voice. Pastor Schultz and Fraulein Elsa played by Thomas Beck and Paulieen Moore were a perfect match. Mary Nash acted Fraulein Rottenmier. She's scary. I thought she was going to kill Heidi that night she took her out in the streets alone. Then I thought she was going to go back and kill Klara too! Sidney Blackman was funny for Herr Sessamann. I liked him. He was great to Heidi and Klara, his daughter. Now for Mady Christaine who played Aunt Dete. She was mean. She seemed to have won the battle with Fraulein Rottenmier. Marcia Mae Jones was so cute for Klara. Porr sweet Klara is in danger! Fraulein Rottenmier didn't want her to get well. Delmar Watson was a great Peter. He was a wonderful goat general. I love this movie alot!
A CLASSIC I WATCH EVERY CHRISTMAS SEASON.......2007-03-26
This is the definitive version of this movie, I have read some reviews below and would like to clear some things up. First off, this is the full feature and nothing was cut, second the print transfer is very good. Maybe there is a better print ,but I have not seen it. There are only a hand full of her films that I will always remember and this is one of them. Curly Top,Bright Eyes and The Little Colonel were the others. The DVD has both Black and White and Colorized version. I am not a fan of colorizing anything, but since they kept the original intact, I did enjoy watching both. This is a family classic that should be added to your Christmas movie collection.
Something to share with young girls today!.......2007-01-17
I loved this movie when I was a little girl, I purchased it to share with my friend's 5-year old triplet girls, as I think they will really gain more from it then some of the things available to them these days.
Shirley Temple's Version of Heidi.......2007-01-10
Shirley Temple's movie career was near its peak when she played the role of Heidi. Heidi has been interpreted in many different ways over the years. Some interpretations are excellent. Other interpretations are poor. This interpretation is relatively weak when compared with the original book, but Shirley Temple is cute and fans of Shirley Temple will forgive the deviations from the book.
Heidi's aunt takes Heidi to her grandfather after her aunt raised her for six years. Heidi's grandfather is a bitter old man who is angry at the world for the loss of his son. However, charming Heidi soon turns him into a loving grandfather who rejoins the world. All seems well until Heidi's aunt returns and convinces Heidi to join her on a trip.
The trip turns out to be a kidnapping. Heidi's aunt takes Heidi to be a companion to Klara Seseman, who is in a wheel chair after suffering an accident. Klara quickly becomes fond of Heidi, to the chagrin of Fraulein Rottenmeier, who is unhappy with Heidi because she thinks Heidi might make it so that Klara no longer needs Rottenmeier. Heidi and Klara get along well, though Heidi remains focused on returning home to her grandfather and the mountains.
After Fraulein Rottenmeier shows her true colors to Klara's father, he discharges her. Fraulein Rottenmeier plans to kidnap Heidi and sell her to the gypsies. Fortunately, Heidi's grandfather has arrived in town and is looking for Heidi. Will Heidi's grandfather find her in time? Will Heidi return to the mountains? What will happen to Klara without Heidi? You will have to watch the movie and see.
Shirley was about nine years old when this movie was made, but she appeared to be younger. Shirley is the main attraction of the movie, and because she is so cute I found it easy to forgive the significant deviations from the book. Most movies based on books take liberties with the story, but this movie takes more liberties than is typical and those distractions can be annoying. The best example I can think of is the chase scene near the end of the movie.
This movie is about average when compared to other Shirley Temple movies. Fans of Shirley Temple will enjoy this film. Fans of the book "Heidi" may dislike this movie because it deviates from the story so much. This version is colorized and the DVD quality could be improved, which could also make some viewers unhappy. Even though this movie has its flaws, I found it interesting to watch and I will watch it again.
Enjoy!

Frank Capra's 1938 populist spin on the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play about a family of happy eccentrics is a great deal of fun, though it significantly rewrites the original work and doesn't represent Capra (Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) at his best. Jean Arthur plays a member of the blissful Vanderhof household who falls in love with a rich man's son (James Stewart) and brings him into her nutty home. Lionel Barrymore, who played such a bad guy eight years later in Capra's It's a Wonderful Life, is the wonderful Grandpa Vanderhof, who addresses God during the dinner prayer as "sir" and speaks plainly and beautifully of why it's good to be alive. Capra took this opportunity to rail against big business and champion the common man, but the overall tone of the film--typical for the director's comedies--is buoyant and snappy. --Tom Keogh

Fun, fun, fun!.......2007-05-07
I saw this movie on the shelf at the library and, after finding it had James Stewart in it and was directed by Capra, figured it had to be good. I was not disappointed. My kids groaned when they realized it was in black and white but they quickly got over it and realy enjoyed this film. The story has been told by many of the other reviewers so I won't rehash it here. It was fun to see Lionel Barrymore in a role so totally reversed from the Mr. Potter he plays in "It's a Wonderful Life." The supporting cast is a lot of fun. I don't know all the actor's names but there were a lot of familiar faces. It was especially fun to see and hear a very young Dub Taylor as the xylophone playing ex-college football player from Alabama who came for dinner one night and didn't leave. I even liked Ann Miller and usually her characters just annoy me.
This film is a lot of fun and has a great message to it. It did leave me with one question however - what shampoo did Jean Arthur use to get her hair so shiny? I'd love to have some.
You Can't Take It With You.......2007-03-26
A good, old fashioned, heart warming movie about good people.
suoer funny .......2007-02-13
You can't take it with you is Frank Capra's best screwball comedy film- and is in my book one of the all time greats that will forever be on my top movie list. Jean Arthur and a young James Stewart along with the other cast makes you laugh from start to finish, I don't want to give too much away, but its deals with a free-spirited family that live rather different who owns a home and will not sell. James is the son to the this powerful group of "stuffed shirts" -who has no interest in becoming president to the company, but is in love with the one of the people who live in the house they are trying to buy.
I can not say anymore then that, without spoiling it for anyone who never yet saw it. All i'll say it worth having in your collection of comedy films when you the Screwball was king. Not rated, in B/W but still worth it.
Outstanding movie!.......2007-01-18
This is a wonderful movie, it will keep you laughing and thinking too. We all need to remember that you can't take it with you. The quality of the DVD is superb!!!

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town is Frank Capra's classic screwball comedy about a village innocent who inherits $20 million, only to discover it's more trouble than it's worth. The screwball in question is Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a small-town greeting-card poet and tuba player transplanted to the big city to administer his newly inherited wealth, where fast-pattering, wised-up cynics, sneering society denizens, and corrupt lawyers lord it over the ingenuous and straightforward. Deeds's idiosyncrasies are amply magnified in the tabloids by journalist "Babe" Bennett (Jean Arthur), dating Deeds as a cover, only to discover she's the sap when she falls irresistibly for him. But the damage has been done, when Babe's column is used by a pack of corrupt lawyers, Cedar, Cedar, Cedar & Budington, to prove Deeds mentally unfit. The miracle of this unforgettable comedy is how it embraces dark material, calling into question some common assumptions about capitalism while maintaining an approachable atmosphere of light comedy, and deceptively so. You'll be so pixilated by its charm, you won't rest until you've doodled your way to a rhyme for "Budington." --Jim Gay
Customer Reviews:
The original Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.......2007-06-20
Quintessential Capra charmer is one of Cooper's most appealing comic forays, as his plain-talking homespun reflection of rural America out-foxes all those smug and greedy city-slickers. Arthur is also terrific as Babe Bennett, the hard-nosed lady journalist who first ridicules, then falls for Longfellow, much to her own surprise. One of the screen's authentic classics, this is pixilated comedy at its very best. Beware the Adam Sandler remake.
Truly a classic movie.......2007-01-11
A must see movie for those that like the classics. Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur are outstanding. People are not taught morals like this everyday anymore.
TERRIFIC FILM THAT HOLDS EVERYBODYS' INTEREST & INCLUDES SOME SURPRISES!.......2006-08-30
IN A NUTSHELL: A 1936 ROMANTIC COMEDY THAT IS STILL RELEVANT
TODAY
Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur are incredibly effective and believable as quite an odd couple in this serio-comic treatment of idealism versus cynicism in the form of the small town iconoclast versus the big city. Together, the pair are the embodiment of the Capra depiction of the grand virtues of the simple country folk pitted against the unnatural and decadent evils of the modern city.
However, in this story, like most of Capra's there is a way out for all of us in this film, and a way for us individually to empathize with the characters and the plight of society as a whole as it staggered through the 'Great Depression'.
MR. DEEDS & THE GREAT DEPRESSION:
Just when one might be thinking okay, I have been watching this film for an hour and I know how it is going to turn out, Mr. Deeds takes a hard turn to the LEFT! In this seemingly extraneous subplot, lies the true meaning of this film, as we discover that Mr. Deeds is much more than just another 'boy meets girl' film with a few bumps thrown in on the way to the altar. That's because Deeds is a better man than that and can't be so easily defeated. Of course, this is a parody of 1936 society which had been in a real depression for 7 years already.
Yes, Mr. Deeds does draw a great deal of empathy from modern viewers as he plays the knight in shining armor from a by-gone era, looking for his damsel in distress in New York City. Rather than just brooding over it, Longfellow Deeds does something drastic about, drastic enough for his sanity to come into question. In this questioning of Deeds' sanity, Babe Bennett [Jean Arthur] is given the opportunity, which see puts to good use, to earn back Longfellow Deeds' trust and so illustrate that perhaps none of us is beyond redemption. Now isn't that a promising idea?

BOTTOM LINE: WE NEED MR. DEEDS ON DVD!
Great surprisingly modern 1936 serio-romantic comedy that boasts a wonderful cast under the brillant oscar winning direction of Frank Capra. In the end, this is a story of hope for all of us just as in 'Lost Horizon'.
Good Deeds.......2006-06-23
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town is the story of Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a man who inherits a fortune from his dead uncle. When he arrives in New York, he begins to reform though the people there expect him to follow their orders blindly. He falls in love with a reporter disguised as a damsel in distress (Jean Arthur) who uses him for a story. Deeds does many great things, but the people who want to use him deem him crazy in order to usurp his power.
Cooper is wonderful in these wide-eyed innocent types of roles. He is tall and wears his strength well, which makes his sweetness all the more appealing. It is hard not to fall in love with his character and to wish that there really were people like him in the world.
This film was re-made starring Adam Sandler and called Mr. Deeds. That version is actually very good and puts some modern comedy into an already great story. It also stays true to this film featuring much of the same plot and names. Sandler does a great job at mimicking Cooper's innocence and honesty, though the original should not be forgotten.
Mr. Deeds.......2005-10-09
Gary Cooper plays Longfellow Deeds, the greeting card poet from Mandrake Falls, Vermont, who inherits 20 million dollars from his uncle, comes to NYC, and becomes the laughingstock of the big city. When he decides to give all the money away to out-of-work farmers (it's Depression time, remember), he is declared insane by lawyers who want some of the pie for themselves, citing his tuba playing, walking in the rain, chasing fire engines, etc. as examples.
Jean Arthur is the newspaper woman who uses him at first to make a bigger sap out of him to sell papers, but soon she finds herself in love with him and decides to help him out. The movie ends with a famous courtroom scene where Cooper refuses to defend himself until it's almost too late - but of course Arthur comes to his rescue and Coop turns the tables.
Like most Capra pictures it goes on too long, and in this one we really feel it. The Capra "corn" is piled on thick, with such scenes as the one at Grant's Tomb almost obligatory in a Capra picture. Cooper and Arthur perform wonderfully, though, and the supporting cast is at its best, too.
Strange note (to me, anyway): Where here Deeds says nothing in his defense at the end, Jimmy Stewart in the similarly sounding MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, also by Capra (1939), goes on talking for 24 hours in his filibuster on the floor of Congress. From one extreme to the other!

"This is the Inner Sanctum...." And this is the world of B-movies, where Hollywood studios churned out entertaining little numbers to fill out an evening back in the Golden Age. Universal's Inner Sanctum series, released in 1943-45, was inspired by the successful radio show of the same title. They're gathered on Inner Sanctum Mysteries: The Complete Movie Collection, a fun grouping of a minor cinematic achievement.
All six films star the phlegmatic Lon Chaney Jr., and most begin with a floating head in the crystal ball, welcoming us to the inner sanctum, "A strange, fantastic world, controlled by a mass of living, pulsating flesh... the mind." The vaguely supernatural promise of this grabby opening is rarely fulfilled by the movies, which tend to be acceptable murder mysteries with--despite the wacky titles--very little horror content. Chaney plays a man of some distinction (a professor in Weird Woman, famous mentalist in The Frozen Ghost, physician in Calling Dr. Death) who runs afoul of women (among them Evelyn Ankers and Patricia Morison) and murder. At some point in each movie he has some elaborate voice-over agony, making clear the connection to the radio series' interior monologue. The one-hour-and-change productions are handsome, considering their budget restrictions, and Universal's prints are well-preserved; the literacy of the writing is surprisingly high--although decent writing can't put much zip into the proceedings.
Weird Woman is probably the best of the bunch, an adaptation of Fritz Leiber's novel Conjure Wife (later filmed as Burn, Witch, Burn!). Chaney is an expert on superstition who marries a voodoo-obsessed woman, whose spells might be responsible for his rapid professional rise. The influence of Cat People is as strong as the source novel. Calling Dr. Death, the first in the series, is duller, with a hypnotism-minded Chaney bedeviled by a wanton wife who conveniently dies under mysterious circumstances. Dead Man's Eyes and the amazingly-titled Pillow of Death are more fun, the former a variation on the old eye-transplant story and the latter a whodunit with lawyer Chaney accused of his wife's murder (the supernatural touch this time: séances).
Strange Confession has Chaney as an honest chemist battling an evil pharmaceutical tycoon (J. Carrol Naish), and The Frozen Ghost combines two horror staples, the unstable mentalist and the wax museum. It's just crazy enough to be entertaining, even if there's no ghost (and hardly any freezing). All in all, the DVD set is a good look at Universal's second-tier output of the era. And then there's Chaney, whose jowly steadfastness can become weirdly fascinating if you watch a few of these close together. Universal put him hard to work after the success of 1941's The Wolf Man, and alongside his monster-movie excursions and his singular triumph in Of Mice and Men, the Inner Sanctum pictures represent Chaney's best moment as a leading man. Despite his limitations, he'll always have his spot in the Universal galaxy. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Six with Chaney.......2007-05-14
In the days before television really took over, the rough equivalent of TV series were put out by movie studios. Churned out quickly by "B" movie units, these movies tended to be produced every few months and short (like TV shows, they would all run around the same length). For example, Universal put out a whole series of Sherlock Holmes and Abbott and Costello movies. Another example from Universal Pictures was the Inner Sanctum Mysteries, a series of six mystery movies all starring Lon Chaney, Jr. The Inner Sanctum of the title was the mind, which as the Spirit of the Inner Sanctum would warn us at the beginning of every movie (but the last one) was capable of plotting murder.
The earlier Inner Sanctum movies would provide voice-over "thoughts" from Chaney to demonstrate his inner turmoil, a gimmick which diminishes as the series goes on. In general, the movies also are plotted similarly, with Chaney accused of a murder and his attempts to vindicate himself. Even this storyline would eventually get a little more variety in the final movies.
The first disc in this two disc set features three movies: Calling Dr. Death, Weird Woman and Dead Man's Eyes. In Calling Dr. Death, Chaney is a neurologist accuses of killing his wife while having an affair with his nurse. It also features Patricia Morison, most notable in Dressed to Kill as the villainess who matches wits with Sherlock Holmes in the final Rathbone movie. (Since these movies all featured contract players, actors repeatedly show up in all sorts of Universal movies).
Weird Woman has Chaney as an anthropologist who marries a woman who believes in witchcraft. When he destroys her magic charms, bad things begin to happen. This movie also stars Evelyn Ankers, a frequent Chaney costar (including The Wolf Man and Son of Dracula). In Dead Man's Eyes, Chaney is an artist accidentally blinded; a corneal transplant provides a possible chance at sight, but he is accused of killing the donor.
Frozen Ghost (the first of three movies on the second disc) has Chaney as a hypnotist who believes he can kill with his gaze. Much of this movie takes place in a wax museum, where death and intrigue occur, and once again, Evelyn Ankers costars. The last two movies have Brenda Joyce as the female lead. Strange Confession has Chaney as a chemist developing an influenza cure, only to be derailed by his duplicitous boss. And while Pillow of Death may have the weakest title in the bunch, it offers a bit of a different plot, with Chaney - as in Calling Dr. Death - accused of murdering his wife to be with his assistant. This is also the longest of the movies, at 67 minutes.
Unlike the two actors Chaney is often associated with, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, Chaney comes off as relatively normal, which is why he is often given normal romances; relationships featuring Karloff or Lugosi tend to be either sexless or warped. As an actor, however, Chaney is just average and these movies are only passable. There are more than a few cliches in the writing and even at just an hour, the films can sometimes drag. They're not awful movies and at least they look reasonably good. On the other hand, with no extras, I can only give the set a low three stars. If you are a fan of these old movies, there will be some value to getting this set, but there are also a lot better movies available; this set should only be for either novelty value or for completists.
Good reminscences.......2007-04-06
The movies in the DVD's are really great in the drama department, and the suspense theme is rated way high despite the times' difference. Lon Chaney Jr. did terrific in all roles down to the final movie. I wish that I could see more films starring him from that post-WWII period!
Not great cinema but fun.......2007-04-04
It's about time Universal got these on DVD. These are 6 VERY low budget movies all starring Lon Chaney Jr. They're quick (most run only about an hour) move quickly and have some neat twists. There are plot loopholes and some bad acting but this is still fun. "Weird Woman" is definetely the highlight of this collection. Worth getting especially for Universal horror fans.
Inner Sanctum Mysteries: The Complete Movie Collection.......2007-02-16
Little is Better. This B movie collection is the perfect medicine for staying up a little late to watch a weird little story, but not wanting to short change a reasonable night's sleep or stress out on a heavy duty of serious.
These little gems are just what was intended... escape. You can imagine the squeaking door if you need, but
for the most part it's sheer pleasure watching some of the best character actors ever in Universal's B movie business.
Lon Chaney, Jr. has the lead in all five features so I recommend the viewers put a special focus on the Hall of Fame performers that give superb support. The mixed bag of men: Milburn Stone, Thomas Gomez, J. Carrol Naish, Paul Kelly, David Bruce, Ralph Morgan, Douglas Dumbrille, J. Edward Bromberg and that creepy little guy who snakes rather than sneaks, Martin Kosleck, are genuine characters. The gals, Brenda Joyce, Jean Parker, Patricia Morison, Anne Gwynn, Ramsey Ames, and ultimate screamer, Evelyn Ankers, are all accomplished actresses with better than good looks who deserved but never got the star treatment.
I'd give the nod to Weird Woman as the best movie of the lot, but each has its own merits and memorable moments. It's a wonderful little package for the true classic B film fan.
Great collection of Lon Chaney Jr. films!.......2007-01-12
I am a huge fan of the late Lon Chaney Jr! These films were done not long after his greatest role as The Wolfman. And although some of the 6 stories on this set are not well written, and some of the actors are not equal with Lon, there are some golden moments here for a fan of Mr. Chaney, and it is important that these films are now available. My only complaint would be a lack of any additional material, but perhaps there is little left to add. If you are a fan of Lon, you NEED to see these films. They may not be as important as his roles in The Wolfman, High Noon, or Of Mice and Men, but they are essential to see as part of his work in the 1940's.

B - Movie.......2007-01-12
There wasn't really anything offensive about the movie it was just kind of a low budget canadian production that you can usually see for free on extended digital channels on cable TV. I bought it because I liked a movie that one of the stars was in, the girl in the middle on the cover. She was blond in that movie and played a Tom boy type that played Ice hockey semi-pro. I can't remember the name of that movie but it was better then this one. Her personality really came out in the ice hockey flick, in this one she was non-decript.
If you are looking for good actors this isn't the film. If you are looking for kinky, this isn't it either.

Despite its Larry Flynt-friendly title, Deanna Durbin is typically wholesome in the lavishly produced musical One Hundred Men and a Girl, which finds its heroine saving a fledgling orchestra led by financially challenged father Adolph Menjou, along with help from Leopold Stokowski. Not surprisingly, music is literally center stage for much of this delightful film; highlights include Stoki's batonless conducting of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and Deanna's winsome trilling of Mozart's "Alleluia." The resulting package earned its star a special 1938 Academy Award (for her "spirit and personification of youth") and took home an Oscar of its own for Charles Previn's score. --Steven Smith

Daughter to the Rescue.......2006-04-03
I decided to watch this movie because I saw it won an Oscar for Best Writing (or something like that). It is a Depression Era movie that tells of an unemployed trombone player (supposedly unemployed for 2 years!). Anyway, circumstances lead his teenage daughter to approach an eccentric socialite woman about sponsoring a band of unemployed musicians (father was not alone in the musical unemployment lines). Through a bunch of mildly amusing twists, things gradually develop.
This movie features a conductor by the name of Stokowski (it kept sounding like Tschaichovsky). I assumed that he, too, was a fictional character. However, I saw him listed on the credits as himself so he must have been somebody back then. I thought the movie was OK but nothing too special. I note from other reviews that Deanna Durbin was a popular figure. She sang in an operatic style. I got a kick out of the conductor asking what she wanted to sing and the orchestra breaking into an unprepared, unrehearsed "La Traviata". Adolphe Menjou gave his usual mediocre preformance but the hit of the movie, for me, was Eugene Pallette (he of the basso profundo voice). In fact there was a constant game of practical jokes between he and one of his rich cohorts that worked into the plot quite well. After watching the movie (which I had taped a week before), I realized that it was just the right movie for me to have watched on April Fool's Day.
Okey Dokey, Stokie!.......2006-02-22
The "One Hundred Men and a Girl" of the title are, respectively, the unemployed musicians who form a symphony orchestra in the hope of finding a sponsor and the plucky flibbertigibbet who, through her guileless charm and moxie, brings them together with Leopold Stokowski. It's all incredibly far-fetched and corny, but it's an extremely likeable picture. It is notable for the respect it pays to classical music: in "One Hundred Men and a Girl," music actually matters; the out-of-work musicians are heroic figures who retain their nobility despite the holes in their shoes, the shine on their suits and the stains on their hats; the audiences who attend classical music concerts in this picture listen with rapt attention and respond enthusiastically at the end; when broadcasting plutocrat Eugene Pallette falls asleep at a concert (he's the only character in the entire movie who does), the joke is on him, rather than on the music: it is comic evidence of his vulgarity. As the intrepid "Patsy" Cardwell, Deanna Durbin sparkles more than is absolutely necessary, but she's a competent little actress, and she is surrounded by a fine supporting cast that includes Adolph Menjou, Eugene Pallette, Alice Brady, Mischa Auer and, of course, Leopold Stokowski. Stokowski is the real surprise here: he turns in a first rate performance that is both witty and subtle and, finally, quite moving. The picture loses steam only when Miss Durbin is invited to sing, which happens no less than thrice; each time she performs, she does so before an increasingly august and admiring public. Even Stokie confesses that her voice is "remarkable." (It would be interesting to know how much Universal Studios paid him to tell such an outrageous fib.) Her voice twitters without ever becoming air-borne. Coloratura passages turn to mush in her throat. The entire movie is so cheerfully diverting that watching it feels rather like spending a pleasant afternoon at an ant-free, cloudless picnic over which Miss Durbin occasionally casts her vocal wet blanket.
Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark.......2006-02-21
A consortium of business types gathers in a Manhattan penthouse and sneers at the little people, a slightly overdrawn look at capitalism. These guys are so awful they make the capitalists in a Lars Von Trier film like MANDERLAY or DOGVILLE look like Albert Schweitzers. The fattest cat is John R. Frost, played by Eugene Pallette in an extremely broad mode, almost as though he were Tony Soprano as a hillbilly. He makes an unlikely financier!
Deanna Durbin has a tough part here, she's always in center stage but most of the time she just has to bug Stokowski until he finally relents, and you can sympathize with him, for she takes what we now call "stalking" to new lows. The two of them are equally good at acting, and Stokowski in particular is a surprise. He could have been a major screen actor on the model of, say, Claude Rains. His huge mop of white hair alone commands attention, and he speaks beautifully, losing dignity only (strangely enough) when he's conducting! As my pal Mac McGinnes points out, "When Oscar Levant was asked what great moment in musical history he wished he had witnessed he said, 'The day Leopold Stokowski discovered he had beautiful hands.'"
Durbin will wring tears from a stone when she is forced to retreat home without getting her way from the great conductor. She sits on her magnificent bed (looks very grand for a poor street urchin, with great golden rods forming a unique bedstead) and cries her heart out, insisting that Adolphe Menjou her dad deserves a job, he deserves "a fur collar on his coat, and, and, turkey on his birthday--instead of BEANS," she sobs, her pretty face contorting in what looks like real anguish. She is an rivetting performer.
Another Hit For Durbin.......2006-02-02
100 Men and a Girl is the story of a group of musicians who are out of work. They seem to be led by one man (Adolph Menjou) whose energetic daughter Patsy (Deanna Durbin) will stop at nothing to see her father and their friends find work. She decides to bother famed conductor Leopold Stokowski for help, but he only becomes annoyed. Instead, she finds a rich woman who promises nonchalantly to sponsor an orchestra if it existed. Patsy proceeds to gain hope and organizes the orchestra only to find that the woman has left for Europe. Patsy decides that her only choice is to berate the woman's husband and Stokowski for support, ensuing great comedy.
Deanna Durbin is still a little girl in this film, bright and cheerful. She has a great sense of comic timing and displays her usual charm. The songs she sings "It's Raining Sunbeams," "A Heart That's Free," "Hallelujah in F Major," and "Traviata" are operatic but well sung.
Mischa Auer plays Michael, one of the musicians, and a very funny one at that. He adds plenty of laughs to the film.
There are a few spots where a black box rims the film during montage sequences. This is a bit distracting, but otherwise, the camerawork is excellent. One notable scene is where the unemployed orchestra congregates on a staircase to play the "Second Hungarian Rhapsody," photographed artistically and beautifully.
Great Music on Screen.......2005-06-28
100 Men and a Girl is Rank Sentimentality with a Great Sound Track. It deserves to be on DVD for the sound track alone. Durbin's rendition of the Mozart Alleluia sends chllls down the spine.
