Amazon.com essential video

Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting. The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.

For those who enjoy excellent Austen adaptations such as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown

On the DVD
There's a lot to love (and a lot lacking) on the 10th anniversary limited edition. It comes in a tall, embossed green case that's out of place on a DVD shelf but blends right into a library of volumes. The three discs fit snugly in a sleeve, accompanied by a 120-page deluxe companion book. The main attraction, a retrospective documentary, features interviews with key cast members with the sad exceptions of Jennifer Ehle (who played Elizabeth) and Colin Firth (Mr. Darcy), which is bound to disappoint fans. Nonetheless, there are some amusing anecdotes from Mr. and Mrs. Bennet (played by Benjamin Withrow and Alison Steadman), Mary Bennet (Lucy Briers), Mr. Collins (David Bamber), Mr. Bingley (Crispin Bonham-Carter) and Mr. Wickham (Adrian Lukis), who all look drastically different--and younger--without their period costumes and hairstyles. One producer recalls that casting Colin Firth in the role with which his name is now synonymous was not an easy feat: he auditioned having gained weight and dyed his hair blond for another role, looking like "an unmade bed." Even Firth's own brother doubted his ability to pull off the dashing Darcy: "Isn't he supposed to be sexy?"

The special features also include a walking tour of the shooting locations with Lukis and Briers and an A&E Biography episode on Jane Austen that focuses largely on the onslaught of mid-1990s film adaptations of her novels. If it's your first time purchasing Pride & Prejudice, this collector's edition is a nice one to own. But if you already own the movie, you're not missing out on anything here. --Ellen A. Kim

1 out of 5 stars Reproduction horrible.......2007-07-03

I will forever love the story of Mr. Darcy and Miss Bennett, but, sad to say, the poor quality of this film made it distracting. I have a beautiful bedside Toshiba television set. The color is superb, yet this film was so colorless. No tone, depth, downright pale. I didn't even bother watching the second disc. It was the price that lured me. If you don't mind colorless, and you just want to hear and vaguely see the story, then by all means ...

5 out of 5 stars Go ahead and buy it--you know you want to........2007-07-01

I'm still not sure why I waited so long to buy this movie--it sat on my wish list for quite a while until I decided to make the investment. If you read the book and enjoyed it, do yourself a favor and do as I did. But to get on topic, in order to properly do the novel justice, a mini-series couldn't have been better. No effort was wasted in the production of this movie, and had it been standard film-length, a lot of goodies from the book and better character development might have been left out. Everything from the clothing to the background music is accurate, considering the time period, and the acting definitely isn't shabby. Another plus: the cast isn't nauseatingly full of gorgeous actors and actresses. The characters are believable, true to their literary counterparts, and seem like people you might find in the late 1700s/early 1800s. And, while on the subject of characters, if you can't stand the "Keira Knightley" Elizabeth Bennet, Jennifer Ehle sticks to her role and the true spirit of Elizabeth. And Colin Firth makes for an excellent Darcy; he seems fit for the 'indignant, better-than-you' rich-man part.

My only complaints really don't deserve to be included, but two things nagged me throughout the film. First, Jane Bennet seemed a little too soft-spoken, even if Jane from the novel was very gentle. Susannah Harker could have put a little more 'umph' into her character but instead gave a somewhat flat performance. Second--something which amused more than bothered me--Caroline, Bingley's sister, looked like a cross-dresser most of the time. Maybe it's just me, but I hope someone else noticed that as well.

Overall, this movie is an excellent buy, and luckily it's been made to watch in shifts as episodes if you can't or don't feel like sitting through all six hours in one run.

5 out of 5 stars Pride & Predjudice with Colin Firth.......2007-06-27

This is my favorite version of P&P. I am a true Jane Austen fan, and having read P&P, Colin Firth is Mr. Darcy through and through. Elizabeth is perfect as well. Mrs. Bennett's performance is outstanding. Great price through Amazon!!! Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars As good as I had hoped!.......2007-06-27

This is a fine collection - after all these years I have finally read the book, chased up the film - and loved it for the most part although I thought Elizabeth a bit 'modern' for my tastes. So I had to get the much talked about BBC production. At first I thought Firth (Darcy) almost too remote - but oddly, by the end, was quite moved by the reconciliation of the two main protagonists. An elegant production. Some fine work by the cast, excepting Mrs Bennett who irritated me in a way that wasn't quite as Austen intended. The 'extras' (bios etc) were a little thin on the ground but the whole presentation couldn't be faulted. An excellent buy and well worth having in one's possession. And far from expensive!

I love P&P, and this is the best version. Most accurate to the book.

With Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as a pair of brazen wedding crashers, this buddy/romantic comedy milks a few big laughs from its foolproof premise. Under the direction of David Dobkin (who previously worked with Wilson on Shanghai Knights), the movie ranges from bawdy romp to mushy romance, and that tonal identity crisis curtails the overall hilarity. But when the well-teamed costars are firing on all pistons with fast-paced dialogue and manic situations, belly laughs are delivered at a steady clip. Things get complicated when the guys infiltrate the family of the Treasury Secretary (Christopher Walken), resulting in a romantic pair-off between Vaughn and the congressman's oversexed daughter Gloria (Isla Fisher) while Wilson sincerely woos another daughter, Claire (Rachel McAdams), who's unhappily engaged to an Ivy League cheater (Bradley Cooper). Walken is more or less wasted in his role, but Jane Seymour and Henry Gibson make amusing appearances, and a surprise guest arrives late in the game for some over-the-top scene-stealing. It's all a bit uneven, but McAdams (considered by some to be "the next Julia Roberts") is a pure delight, and with enough laughs to make it easily recommended, Wedding Crashers will likely find its place on DVD shelves alongside other flawed but enjoyable R-rated comedies that embrace a naughtier, nastier brand of humor with no need for apologies. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVD
The "Uncorked" edition of Wedding Crashers adds about 8 minutes of footage to the theatrical release. Of chief interest are extended beach and bathroom scenes between Vince Vaughn and Isla Fisher, and Vaughn's extended confession to Father O'Neil (Henry Gibson), but there are also new scenes featuring Keir O'Donnell as the eccentric Todd and Ellen Albertini Dow as the potty-mouthed grandmother. This edition is billed as unrated because it wasn't resubmitted to the MPAA, but the sexier bathroom scene and coarser confession aren't particularly raunchier than the original film, and there's no additional nudity. You can watch the Uncorked edition once to see the new footage, but for subsequent viewings you'll probably choose to stick with the theatrical release, which is also included on the DVD.

Bonus features consist of two very good commentary tracks, one by director David Dobkin and another by Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Dobkin's is more technically informative, and he specifically discusses why the added scenes were originally cut. Vaughn and Wilson are a little more subdued than might be expected, but they share some laughs, recall some material that was left out, and wander into irrelevant territory such as football and Wilson's dog. Other features include four deleted scenes with optional commentary by Dobkin, and two featurettes covering the making of the film (including the logistics of staging five different weddings, and interviews with the "magic and balloon consultant") and Vaughn and Wilson's meandering discussion of "the rules" of wedding crashing. For a more organized recap, there's a 24-screen text-only list of all the rules. The opening menu is clever, but slow to load after you've watched it the first time. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Nerd Check.........2007-06-27

Here's a nerd check... Go out and rent or buy this movie one night. Call a few buddies up, get a six pack (+), or whatever else floats your boat, for each buddy in the room. Have about 3-4 each. Watch the opening scene and if everyone isn't laughing or pretty pumped up then you're probably a nerd. Have the rest of the beer during the rest of the movie. Maybe slip into some scotch or tequila.. because this movie stays funny pretty much the entire way through. If you ever wanted to know what it's like to be a 30 something girl chasing guy that still hasn't grown up then you must watch this movie. These two are seriously "livin' the dream". This is already a classic. Just buy it and if you don't like it today, pick it up in 5 years and you'll figure it out.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-22

Movie lives through Vaughn and Wilson. Both show an easy performance and want the audience to just simply have a good time.

The Story is nothing spectacular. If you liked "Meet the Fockers", you're gonna like this one as well.

Its the actors, who make the difference. Vaughn is hilarious and proofs, that he's much better in comedies than in "serious" movies. Wilson plays himself (as in every one of his movies) and scores a good 2nd place.

Walken is just Walken and thats worth half the ticket. The girls are gorgeous. Especially Rachel McAdams knocked me out. Holy Cow! The Crashers are good fun. Not an new invention of the genre, but especially because of the actors, this movie rocks!

3 out of 5 stars Likable, but disappointing.......2007-05-26

I was hoping for something special with this. This movie boasts both a great cast and great setup. Two 30-something attorneys still holding on to an "Animal House" lifestyle?...oh yeah, Wilson and Vaughn fit the roles perfectly. The supporting cast includes the appealing Rachel McAdams, and the always-great Christopher Walken and Jane Seymour.

The movie itself is marketed as a comedy cut from the cloth of Animal House. And when it keeps that focus...showing the two main characters as personable rogues, the movie works. Everything seems to be in place: Plentiful schemes and partying by our heroes? Check. One great grandiose scam underway? Check. Detestable rival for our heroes? Check.

There are problems however. The movie suffers from bad timing and editing. It also takes itself way too seriously. The timing suffers because while there are some great setups, the payoffs aren't there. Here's an example--while Vaughn is staying at his latest girlfriend's family house, events run out of control to the point that he becomes unwillingly bound to the guest bed. The big payoff is when her dad comes in the room, but the scene just ends. Dad seems to notice the ropes holding Vaughn into place...but there's no real reaction.

The movie is overlong and needed some major editing when the story returns from the visit to the family house. It's pretty easy to guess how the movie will end even halfway through it, so scene after scene of plot development isn't really needed. Likewise, the cameo towards the end was funny, but could have been handled in a single scene rather than dragging on to multiple events and locations.

Finally, the movie treats itself way too seriously. I don't have a problem with a "deeper" moments, or a plot where our heroes see the errors of their ways. But the last half of the movie feels like the comedy has been jettisoned in order to follow Wilson's soul-searching.

All in all, not bad, but not nearly as good as I had hoped. On the other hand, given the stars, there was a real danger that Ben Stiller would make a cameo. Fortunately, he doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious comedy!.......2007-05-25

I'm rating this movie in general, not specifically the unrated DVD version...This is a very, very funny movie! Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson make a perfect team, and the underrated Isla Fisher steals every scene she's in. The funny parts (i.e., practically the entire movie) are REALLY funny, with no ridiculous juvenile humor. Yet there are poignant moments that reveal what great friends the two guys are in this movie, whether or not they want to admit it. When one of the guys decides he doesn't want to crash weddings anymore, his buddy goes off to find another partner in crime, and his new venue is absolutely, ridiculously hilarious. Highly entertaining movie that is just as funny the 2nd time around.

5 out of 5 stars Berg.......2007-05-15

It's not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Toula Portokalos is a quiet, devoted daughter in a big, hectic, crazy Greek family. Working at her father's restaurant, "Dancing Zorba's," she hides behind a mop of mousy brown hair and thick, impenetrable glasses, keeping her family close and the world at a distance. But one day at the restaurant, she finds herself pouring coffee for a man so strikingly good-looking, that he inspires her to change her life - and the way she sees the world - forever. With a new hairdo, wardrobe, contact lenses, and most important of all, a whole new attitude, Toula steps out into the world a new woman, all ready to meet her man. Ian Miller is tall, handsome, but definitely not Greek. And whether he can handle Toula, her parents, her aunts, uncles, cousins and several centuries of Greek culture remains to be seen. But when you see the world through Toula's eyes, anything is possible!

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of my family!.......2007-06-21

The first time I watched this movie, I remember thinking "They remind me of MY family!". Whether you're Greek or not, you'll be sure to love this movie.

So what's this movie about? This movie revolves around the life of Toula, a Greek who is sick of his father's Greek stories and having to work in her family's Greek restaurant. When Ian makes a stop at her restaurant, Toula begins to fall for him although he doesn't quite notice her. After going back to school and getting a better job (and a much needed makeover), Ian and Toula meet again and this time, the feeling is mutual. The two fall in love and become engaged. The problem? Ian is not Greek. The rest of the movie has Toula's family trying to understand Ian and his lifestyle and ultimately making it to the couple's wedding.

So what's to like about this movie? As I said above, Toula's family reminds me so much of my family. Some of the Greek stereotypes pertain to my Portuguese family as well which makes this movie that much sweeter. Second, it's incredibly funny. From Toula's father's use of Windex to fix everything, to the entire male part of the family being named Nick, you'll be sure to find a lot of humor in this movie. Third, the storyline is sort of different. Obviously there are movies out there about engaged couples that just don't get along with their parents-in-law but this movie shows an entire family that just doesn't understand Ian.

And what's not to like? Not much. Although it's rated PG, I wouldn't let younger kids watch this movie. Besides that very minor thing, this movie is great!

When it comes to movies that you MUST watch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for Greeks.......2007-06-16

I didn't see this film when it was in the theaters, in spite of rave reviews. It seemed to be a pretty obvious story which didn't interest me.
Recently I picked it up at the library (for free) and, to my surprise, I found it genuinely heartwarming and entertaining.

As others have mentioned, it is sort of a re-hash of Moonstruck, and it isn't as well done. And yes be prepared for a lot of ethnic stereotypes--the loud Greeks with the garish taste as well as the uptight WASPS. And yes, we know from the opening scene what's going to happen. I think that the reason the movie overcomes these flaws is the overwhelming love in it. You can tell that it's a real story and that's what lifts it up from cliche to something genuinely touching.

The script is smart and funny. It moves fast. And the cast is first rate. To some, the idea that the very homely 30-ish girl in the restaurant would stand a chance with the superbly hunky Ian Miller (played by the irrestable John Corbett) seems impossible. But the actress is so funny, so real, and so smart, that she really does have enormous appeal.

I am always happy to see the wonderful Laine Kazan, who makes every scene a heartwarmer. The fellow who played the dad is perfect, too, as are all of the others. I particulary loved the gramma!

I recently saw Monsoon Wedding, which was also lauded and can be compared in many ways to this film. But Monsoon Wedding nowhere touched the genuineness of this work.

It's not the most artfully impressive film ever made, but, like the big fat family (including the newcomer,) it has plenty of heart...and that's worth a lot!

5 out of 5 stars Jackie W. .......2007-06-11

This is really one great movie! I've seen it before but enjoy watching it again every year or so. John Corbett is so "dreamy"! The TV sit-com would have been a big hit if Corbett was in the cast. All the family antics makes this movie a success. Everyone must see this movie at least once.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious comedy!.......2007-05-25

Oh, my gosh, this romantic comedy was absolutely fall-on-the-floor hilarious! If you are from a family with a strong ethnic background (like I am), you will find this movie hysterically funny. The at-the-time-unknown Nia Vardalos is charming as the heroine, and John Corbett is perfectly cast as her love interest. But it's the huge (and hugely funny) supporting cast that really makes this movie. Strong casting and a well-written and well-executed script make for a great movie. Don't miss this one!!

Monsoon Wedding is a return to form for Mira Nair, director of 1988's Salaam Bombay! Nair's gift for observation of the everyday and her love for her characters make for a delightful film, which spins a web of family relationships that knit and break during a wedding at a perfect pace. The excellent performances exceed the often stereotypical roles on offer (including the incomparable Nasiruddin Shah as the harassed father, Kulbhushan Kharbanda as the comic uncle, and Shefali Chaya as the orphaned cousin). Nair's sympathetic eye for the unnoticed and the harassed is at its best with the tender romance between the servant and Dube (Vijay Raaz), the marigold-munching, upwardly mobile wedding coordinator, who brings pathos and humor to the often unseen servant classes. The handheld camera gives a docudrama feel to this celebratory look at the upper-middle-class Hindu Punjabi joint family, while paying tribute to modern Indian public culture of music, television, and, of course, "Bollywood." --Rachel Dwyer

5 out of 5 stars Off the beaten path for me.......2007-06-16

Normally, this wouldn't be a DVD that I would pick off the shelf, but I have heard good things about it, and decided to get it. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good movie and I couldn't believe that it was almost 2 hours long....it didn't drag at all. Maybe just the smallest bit slow in starting, but the people were so interesting I knew it would probably get better, and it did. Interesting backdrop in Delhi....I can't imagine the crowding and the heat in India. Part of their culture is different, of course, but we have a lot in common. I liked the fact that there were several stories going on, and all loose ends got tied up. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a break in the ordinary.

2 out of 5 stars Colorful.......2007-05-30

I have never seen a Bollywood film and wasn't much interested in them. But I read such good reviews of this that I gave it a try.

I found the view into modern Indian upper middle class life interesting, particulary the blend of ancient culture and the new. Cell phones, mixed drinks, smoking cigarettes in the bathroom, crude references to sex, shopping...It seemed that they have picked up on the worst elements of Western society. golf? I think that's what dismayed me the most. I kept waiting for some sort of spirituality to emerge but that wasn't to be, not in this film.

The story is ok, in a simple way and the subplots of the romance of the servants and the child predator added some more interest. The character of the father of the bride is very well acted; he was probably the only person I felt any affinity for. The others just seemed so one dimensional that I couldn't take any of them very seriously.

The costumes are gorgeous. The colors are sumptuous and the overall feeling of celebration at the end is nice. There is certainly a warm family vibe--but they're all drinking so much that one wonders how genuine it really is.

I hate to say this for I fear I'll get some nasty comments addressed to me like I don't have a heart or brain...but I kept thinking that this movie would have played well in the US in about 1950. I just found it superficial, shallow and silly. However a whole lot of others loved it....so take your chances.

3 out of 5 stars Inda - Monsoon Wedding.......2007-05-26

I like this DVD because it is a fun movie plus it shows life in India. It is hard to believe how crowded it is in Delhi.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-05-22

I was absolutely surprised by this film. It was quite different than the typical "bollywood" flick, but it including those elements in a spare, yet flirty way.

The acting was great, the set and scenery amazing, and the storyline was compelling.

I felt like a voyeur in the life of a priviledged group of Indians preparing for a feast with gusto, and typical "father of the bride" issues. The contrasts of modern technology v. traditional ceremony is brilliant.

If you want "bollywood" you get a taste of dance, music, and splendor, but there is a back-story as well that adds a very special element which will appeal to a broader audience. [BTW, the commentary was a huge bonus, and I can't wait to watch more of Rajit Kapoor's work -- I'm awaiting the short story collection as I write this]. My vote is yes yes yes, it's definitely worth owning!

5 out of 5 stars This movie is full of joy!.......2007-05-12

This movie is full of joy, life, love, laughter, music. There are moments where I wanted to jump up and start dancing. A truly fabulous, rewarding film.

You're better off having been born after, say, 1965, if you really want to enjoy this corny romantic comedy and its abundant references to the MTV culture of the mid-1980s--and even then the odds are only 50-50 that you'll have a shamelessly good time. But a lot of people beat those odds, because The Wedding Singer was a surprise box-office hit when released in early 1998, and it resulted in Saturday Night Live graduate Adam Sandler's salary going ridiculously sky-high. It's a schizophrenic film about a seemingly schizophrenic wedding singer (Sandler) who's charmingly sweet to some people but a tongue-lashing maniac to others, probably out of frustration over his fading ambition as a wannabe rock star (not to mention Sandler's penchant for loud-mouthed lunacy). When he meets an admiring young waitress (delightfully played by Drew Barrymore), it's love at first sight, complicated by their pending marriages to much less appealing fiancés. The plot then contorts itself to accommodate this contrived will-they-or-won't-they? scenario, so you're better off ignoring the love story and focusing on the comedy, which is sporadic but occasionally hilarious. This is also a lighter, friendlier Sandler than moviegoers had seen before, which probably accounts for the movie's success. Toss in a fine supporting cast--including a show-stopping drunk act by indie-movie stalwart Steve Buscemi--and you've got the ingredients for a no-brainer that's ultimately more fun than it is annoying. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A romantic comedy!.......2007-04-26

Adam Sandler at his best, matched up with Drew Barrymore, this dynamic duo makes you want to laugh, cry, and fall in love. The frosting on this wedding cake is when you flash back to the 80's with a great soundtrack of hits from all your favorites.
The movie takes you back to all fads such as Michael Jackson's white glove, Miami Vice, Billy Idol, Alabama Slammers, all-temper-Cheer, and hairdo's that wil make you laugh.

The story is simple--boy meets girl, girl meets boy ...they fall in love.
Only problem is: the girl, Julia, is going to get married to someone, Glenn the rich boyfriend, who she doesn't love.
The wedding singer, Robbie, gets dumped at his own wedding, and helps Julia plan her wedding; thats when they fall in love.

This is a fun movie with lots of passion from the actors, and leaves you smiling in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Sandler Sings For His Supper.......2007-03-14

Adam Sandler's film career has had its ups and downs. From the easily forgotten "Billy Madison" to the well-intentioned but slightly miscued "Click," Sandler has played both straight man and buffoon to varying degrees of success. In "The Wedding Singer," Sandler manages to harness his inner goofball and pulls off a wonderful performance in what is probably his best film to date.

Sandler plays Robbie Hart, an aspiring songwriter who plays weddings for extra cash until his career takes off. He's nice to old ladies, lives in his sister's basement, and is the best wedding singer money can buy. At the opening of the film, Robbie and his bandmates are setting the dancefloor aflame with the 80's classic, "You Spin Me Round" (originally by Dead or Alive). While at this wedding reception, Robbie runs into Julia (played to sweet perfection by Drew Barrymore), a soon-to-be married server with the catering service at the reception. The two hit it off instantly and become good friends. Julia even works at Robbie's wedding and witnesses his being left at the altar by his would-be wife, Linda.

Robbie falls into a funk, refusing to play any and every wedding reception he's offered, including Julia's. He eventually agrees to help her set up her wedding with her Don Johnson wannabe fiance, Glenn (Matthew Glave). As any good romantic comedy would have happen, Robbie and Julia begin to fall for each other and their respective fiances are proven to be no good and undeserving of their love. Even though, neither Robbie nor Julia can openly reveal their love for one another to anybody. In the end, everything is tied nicely together by a ballad sung by Robbie, and everyone goes home happy.

The cast in this film is wonderful. Christine Taylor plays Holly, Julia's loose cousin. Frank Sivero is hilarious in a brief role as Robbie's brother-in-law. Steve Buscemi and Jon Lovitz also have bit roles but make the most of them. Sandler's buddy, Allen Covert, plays his best friend, Sammy, a limo driver who wants to be like the Fonz. Alexis Arquette is George, a Boy George lookalike. Also look for Kevin Nealon as a banker who interviews Robbie.

Of course, the one thing most people seem to focus on in this film is the music and fashion of the 80's. Pop culture abounds in this film with references to Van Halen's breakup, Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson's "strong" marriage, J.R. getting shot on "Dallas," Freddy Krueger, all temperCheer, and the Dunkin' Donuts guy. The musical lineup includes songs by Journey, Flock of Seagulls, Culture Club, David Bowie, and Huey Lewis and the News among others. Heck, Billy Idol even has a scene-stealing cameo on a flight to Las Vegas.

Obviously, if you grew up in the 80's, you're going to catch onto most of the pop culture references in the film. However, you need not know them in order to enjoy this film. It's a hilarious romantic comedy that showcases the talents of Sandler and Barrymore, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars If you love 80's music..........2007-02-12

You will like this movie. It is set in 1985, and Robbie Hart is a wedding singer who lives in his sister's basement and is set to get married to an unsatisfied fiance (played by Angela Featherstone, the famous Xerox girl from Friends). Everything comes tumbling around him when she announces they aren't meant to be because she deserves more than a low-paid wedding singer, and he sets on a mission to improve himself so that one day a girl would actually want to marry him.

Drew Barrymore is the sweet catering hall waitress who is engaged to a cocky Miami Vice-loving two timer. They become great friends during the course of this very funny movie, filled with great 80's references and terrific music. I won't tell you how it ends (though i'm sure you can guess) but it's a great movie.

3 out of 5 stars Two Good Films - Three Forgettable.......2007-06-17

Powell and Loy are at their best in the last two films, which makes them great fun. I personally prefer I Love You Again to Love Crazy, which is slightly skewered and in some ways unpleasant - Powell's characterization of a cad being a bit too good. I Love You Again finds Powell genuinely loveable, and works better. The moment when he suggests he and his wife, Loy, recreate their honeymoon night, but do everything 'backwards' is as priceless as is Loy's cooling rebutal to his attempt at jumping the gun on the bedroom. Too, Gail Patrick and Jack Carson are more effective in their set-up roles. The best scene: a Lincoln-like Powell, pretending insanity to prevent a divorce proceeding, sets top hats sailing on a swimming pool, "Be free!"
The other three films are hopelessly forgettable.
If I Love You Again and Love Crazy were paired I would rate them at least a 4, possibly a 4 and half. But the rating plummets when they're connected to the others.
When will we be able to see some Powell movies without Loy? Life With Father demands release restored to its glorious colors, not to mention Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. A set of the best of Powell's Warner Brothers films?

5 out of 5 stars All but one of the Powell/Loy films are now on DVD.......2007-05-09

This collection contains five titles currently not on DVD that were made starring the famous duo during the same time frame as their "Thin Man" series. With the exception of 1947's "The Senator was Indiscreet", this puts all of the Loy/Powell films on DVD. The extras described below are from a press release from Warner Home Video. The biggest let-down about this set is the lack of commentary for any of the films, but Warner probably figures with the amount of documentary material they put in the Thin Man Boxed Set, they would just be going over old territory. The films, in chronological order, are as follows:

Manhattan Melodrama (1934)
This is more of a movie with Powell and Loy than one about them as a couple. The focus is more on Clark Gable and William Powell, who play two orphans who grow up together but wind up on opposite sides of the law. Myrna Loy plays the woman that both characters love. Gable plays the gangster in this film, Powell the guy who goes up the political ladder. The melodramatic part is that as D.A. Powell's character wins a conviction against Gable's character, and as a result he is sentenced to death. Later, as governor, Powell must decide whether or not to commute his childhood friend's sentence. Powell is very good here at playing a more serious role.
Special Features:
· Comedy short "Goofy Movies #2"
· Classic cartoon "The Old Pioneer"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Evelyn Prentice (1934)
This one seems to miss a step as far as plot holes go, but it is still above average. Powell plays a defense attorney who is also part detective, and whose heavy-duty work habits cause him to neglect his wife, played by Loy in the title role. As a result of this neglect, Loy commits an indiscretion with a playboy and ultimately figures into her husband's next big murder case.
Special Features:
· Comedy short "Goofy Movies #3"
· Classic cartoon "Discontented Canary"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Double Wedding (1937)
This is a different kind of film for Powell and Loy. Loy plays high-powered businesswoman Margit Agnew who is unhappy to learn that her little sister is planning to marry vagabond Charlie Lodge (William Powell) who, since he lives in a trailer, is hardly in a position to support her. Margit tries to intervene, and in the end winds up with Lodge herself. The plot is thin, but the comedy is very good. This film was shot partly before and after the death of Jean Harlow, who was Powell's lover and Loy's good friend. Filming was suspended for awhile due to the tragedy.
Special Features:
· Musical short "Dancing on the Ceiling"
· Classic cartoon "The Hound and the Rabbit"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

I Love You Again (1940)
My favorite non-Thin Man Loy and Powell movie and showcases everything that is great about the chemistry the two had on screen. Powell plays stuffy and rich Larry Wilson, who, after a blow to the head, realizes he is actually confidence man George Carey. Wilson is just some alternate identity he assumed after he first got amnesia nine years before. Realizing he has a sweet deal in his wealthy second identity, Carey decides to clean out Wilson's finances and leave town. However, when Carey meets Wilson's estranged wife, played by Loy, he falls for her and decides to hang around long enough to win her back.
Special Features:
· Crime Doesn't Pay Series short "Jackpot"
· Classic cartoon "Tom Turkey and His Harmonica Humdingers"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Love Crazy (1941)
Another excellent entry in the Loy and Powell series of movies. After four years of marriage, Stephen Ireland (William Powell) runs into an old girlfriend that lives nearby. The two end up just talking, but a series of comic misadventures cause Stephen's wife, Susan (Myrna Loy), to believe Stephen is cheating on her and she decides to divorce Stephen. Desperate to keep Susan, Stephen decides to pretend he is not in his right mind to draw things out. He does such a good job that everyone believes him - except his wife. There is some great physical comedy here by Powell.
Special Features:
· Classic cartoon "The Alley Cat"
· Audio-only bonus: Screen Directors Guild Playhouse Radio Broadcast
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behavior, and Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert's gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character's needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalize on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director P.J. Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit "I Say a Little Prayer") that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. It's no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. --Jeff Shannon

Thanks for getting this DVD to me while I am stationed over seas.

3 out of 5 stars I give it a B..........2007-04-15

I was very glad this movie didn't end up being a silly romance and break the couple up just to rekindle an old relationship! A good watch for a dull Saturday afternoon.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised me.......2007-02-03

I never saw the this when it was released years ago basically b/c it seemed like a chick flick that wouldn't interest me.

It was on television recently and I caught the latter half of it (I now ordered the DVD b/c I want to see it all). Normally I wouldn't write a review until seeing the whole movie but I was truly blown away by some of the scenes, the clever writing and some of the performances.

There's a scene on a boat with Julia Roberts that was right out of a Hollywood romance classic. I don't want to spoil it nor build it up too much... but just after watching the scene I was like... wow, that was ...beautiful. IMHO it was an example of movie making at it's best.

So then I was hooked -and kept watching to find it's a great flick that I should have allowed myself to see years ago. Julia Roberts is a modern day Katherine Hepburn in this movie, she acts so incredibly well... balancing subtle expressions and comical ones perfectly to each scene. She's a gem.

The film isn't for everyone, but if you like clever romantic comedies "My Best Friends Wedding" should not be missed.

But when Governor Welling (James Brolin), who is Ben's boss and Maggie's father, speaks out against gay marriage, Ben decides to go on strike. The wedding is almost off when Maggie sides with Shel, while Shel's boyfriend Ted (Sean Maher) supports Ben's position. Shel's stand becomes the focus of national media attention with gays across the country striking for equal rights.

4 out of 5 stars A Well Done, Professional Comedy with an Understated Powerful Message.......2007-06-30

The added features on this very entertaining DVD of the brisk and light comedy WEDDING WARS bear watching: the producers, director and actors make the case for the approach of this quality film in tackling the issue of rights for gay marriage in a manner that could not offend anyone and at the same time create a more serious vantage from which to view the controversy. It is the only time in the 'film' that politics is the issue, a factor that makes the actual viewing of the story far more powerful. Credit the writer Stephen Mazur and director Jim Fall for a creating a frothy, fun story that has much more at its core than just entertainment.

Ben Grandy (Eric Dane) works as the campaign manager for the Governor of Maine (James Brolin) and proposes to the governor's daughter Maggie (Bonnie Sommerville). The wedding will be at the waterside mansion of the Governor and when the need for a wedding planner is raised, Maggie insists they ask Shel Grandy (John Stamos), the openly gay brother of Ben, who as a party planner has always dreamed of doing a wedding. Shel is in a successful relationship with state prosecutor Ted (Sean Moore) who remains in the closet for career reasons. Shel jumps at the chance to do the wedding, hoping that in some way this event will mend the schism with his big brother who has been distant since Shel informed him he was gay. All goes well until Ben writes a speech for the Governor in which the Governor states he is against gay marriage. Shel is stunned, gathers up his plans for the wedding and begins a private strike for gay marriage, a strike that with television and media coverage soon spreads across the entire USA, the result being the closure of beauty salons, florists, restaurants, limo services (and all the stereotype gay run businesses, unfortunately). The crisis is ultimately resolved in a humorous yet very touching manner and to reveal more would diminish the impact for the viewer.

John Stamos is superb as the radical Shel, but everyone in the cast is completely professional - James Brolin, Eric Dane, Bonnie Sommerville, Sean Maher, Claire Welling, Sean McCann, Jane Eastwood, Linda Kash, etc.
The production qualities are polished, the story flows along at a fast clip, and in the end there are moments of truth that poignantly emphasize human rights to happiness for everyone. Would that there were more films of this caliber to deliver social comment without the preaching so often associated with message films. It is a delight to watch. Grady Harp, June 07

4 out of 5 stars Campy & Funny with a message.......2007-05-17

I just saw this movie the other day. A friend of mine had taped it. I found the movie to be very campy and funny. There were some stereotypes used in creating many of the supporting cast, but the Stamos and Maher were anything but. While there were some stereotypes used in creating each character, they were both well rounded, and in no way the cliche "flaming over the top fag" that tends to be created in most other comedies.

The movie has a great message, and one that I hope will actually be heard. I applaude A&E for airing a movie like this. It had a much wider audience than if it had been broadcast on one of the gay networks, or released only on DVD. I wish more of studios would take a stand and make movies with queer main characters, and have them be well rounded, and not cliches.

OH, and just on a side note, Sean Maher is still as hot as ever, even if he went from a doctor on a spaceship (Firefly-TV series) to an assistiant district attorney. Either way, he is always a great bonus to any show.

4 out of 5 stars A Strong Message.......2007-05-14

"Wedding Wars"

A Strong Message

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Wedding Wars" (Sony), a made for TV movie, takes a big issue and tries to make it acceptable to most people, Gay marriage has become such a major issue in America and many people have no idea of how involved the whole business it. In the movie, the message is there, albeit, sugar-coated. What the movie that was screened on A&E shows is that civil unions are better than nothing but fall short of marriage regarding equal rights and protections and the fact that because a majority wants something does not make it right. It also shows that many people have closeted gay members in their families and they in reality know a gay person, even if they do not wish to acknowledge it, Some of us have problems with commitment because we have been conditioned by society not to see that as an option. It is important, however, to remember that knowing a gay person is not the same as accepting one without reservations. With that said--and these issues are major, let's move onto the movie.
John Stamos plays an openly gay guy who stands up for what he believes and he did so gloriously. Shel (Stamos) is asked to plan his brother's, Ben's, wedding to the governor's daughter. Shel's problems begin when he realizes that his brother does not believe that gay couples are entitled to the same rights as straight couples. He decides to stand up for what he believes in and goes on strike. Support for his stance comes slowly ad he plays the part to the hilt. Stamos is funny and sexy and vulnerable and he keeps the movie on the right course. Ben, Shel's brother, on the other hand, is uptight and is highly opposed to gay marriage and the battles between the two brothers mirror the arguments going on in our country today. The difference is that these arguments are funny. What could be a complex and multidimensional issue laden with controversy s treated comically and with a great deal of heart and warmth.
When Stamos stages his own one man strike and his withdrawal from his brother's wedding and picketing of the governor's mansion (Can you see that in Arkansas?), he gets a lot of media attention and even though he does not win the immediate political war, he does win the love of his friends and family, including the love of his brother, whose wedding he refused to plan.
The birth of this political activist came about because of the limits placed upon his own rights and Stamos does not play the character as a gay stereotype but rather his character grows sand develops as he becomes more politically aware.
The message delivered by "Wedding Wars" is that rights and respect are not won from inside the closet.
This is NOT a great movie. It is fluffy and therefore does not offend. I found it engaging but it is somewhat tacky and cheaply made. After all, it was not meant to be a documentary nor to argue the pros and cons of the debate over gay marriage. It's purpose was to entertain the average American TV viewer and thatit does, in my opinion. It is definitely worth a look see.

Bend It Like Beckham is true girl power. This glorious comedy centers on Jess (Parminder Nagra), an Indian girl born in England whose only desire is to become a football--or, as we say on this side of the Atlantic, soccer--star like her idol, David Beckham; but her traditional family refuses to even consider it. With the help of her new friend Juliet (Keira Knightley), Jess secretly joins a girls' team under the guidance of a male coach (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). As the team starts to gain some attention, Jess's secret can't be kept forever. The story of Bend It Like Beckham is so genuine and detailed that it transcends all the sports-movie formulas that it also fulfills with cheeky exuberance. Wonderfully acted, and written and directed with loving care by Gurinder Chadha (Bhaji on the Beach, What's Cooking?), this movie is pure delight from start to finish. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever!.......2007-05-13

I absolutely LOVE this movie! I love the music in it, the humor of the movie, the fact that you can really relate to the characters...I feel like I really know what it's like to be a part of their life and family, even culture for that matter. Being from the United States, it was very interesting to see the different cultural aspects of an Indian family and life in London. I love this movie and I would recommend that everyone see it! OHH! I love the wedding scene as well...the colors of the dresses, the traditions, everything! Beautiful!

4 out of 5 stars Gurinder Chadha rocks!.......2007-04-19

I really enjoyed this film. The music, dancing, costumes, etc. were excellent. In the bonus features, learning to make Aloo Gobi (sp?) was fun.

I am pretty tired of the whole gay theme in almost every movie I see these days and this film was no exception. The gay Indian dude/best friend of Parminder Nagra and the best friend's mom obsessed with the fact that her daughter (Keira Knightly) might be gay, really annoyed me. It would have been nice to watch this film without those two distractions.

I'm looking forward to Gurinder's next project as the one that followed this one (Bride and Prejudice) was great!

4 out of 5 stars Another fantastic indie from Fox Searchlight.......2007-03-23

God, how I love Indies. They're funny, unique, usually somewhat dramatic like a dramedy, and special in their own way. Which is why I simply love Fox Searchlight studios: they've created movies that drop from indie heaven, and they are a fine studio. Bend it Like Beckham is in no way any exception: it's funny, smart, dramatic, special, and gives you that feel-good feeling inside. Parminder Nagra, an actress I have never seen act anywhere else, plays the Indian teenager Jess living in England with a passion for football (for us Americans, soccer). Her parents say otherwise, though, and she ends up lying and cheating out of her culture just so she can follow her dreams of one day playing professional. Her idol in life is David Beckham, much to her parents disprove. Almost in every way this girl is a rebel, and that's partly why the movie is so great. She will stop at nothing to make sure her dream is realized. Now, why, you ask, is a movie about that so appealing? Well, that's a question you'll need to see it to properly understand the answer to. The movie delivers a powerful, almost controversial message: your dreams are the most important things in your life. Put nothing ahead of them, and follow them until they come true in every way you originally imagined them to. This is a good movie to watch along with the recent film "Little Miss Sunshine," as they both deliver the same message, and are both produced by Fox Searchlight, simply the BEST in indie film producing today. Rent "Beckham," don't miss out on the fun. :)

4-Stars

5 out of 5 stars And the stereotypes come falling down.......2007-03-16

This is a delighful coming of age movie about two 18 year old girls in London who love soccer (football). One, an Indian Sikh teenager, (Jessie) has a poster of soccer star Beckham in her room, which she talks to, expressintg her desire to become a professional soccer player - hardly a goal her proper Sikh family would approve of. Mom wants her to learn how to cook in the Indian way, marry and have children. Dad, an airline pilot, wants her to go to university and become a lawyer - then get married and have lots of kids.

Jessie plays pick-up soccer in the park with the boys - also a no-no in a proper Indian family - where Jules, a slim boyish looking girl spots her and invites her to play on an amateur girls soccer team. Jules' mom is on of the best parts of the movie. A haughty, social climbing, pretenious woman, delightfully played, who chews up the scenery in every scene.

Soon Joe, the young coach, makes his appearance.

The story is about the freedom of women to choose their own destiny even in tradition bound families, discrimination, youthful ideals and young love.

It's really a sweet little film and highly recommended.

Jerry

5 out of 5 stars Female athletes..........2007-01-15

Gurinder Chadha did a brilliant job of creating this highly enjoyable film.

Unlike today in the U.S.A., it is still not popular for women to play soccer (footer) in Europe; however, I remember when, not too long ago, it was also unpopular for American women to play soccer.

Hopefully this film will leave a positive impression on European society, that may someday offer more opportunities to women in sports.
