Future B movie maverick Larry Cohen (It's Alive, Q: The Winged Serpent) made his directorial debut with this sly, often savage, social satire set in Beverly Hills. Yaphet Kotto swaggers into the backyard of an affluent, upper-middle-class Beverly Hills couple (Andrew Duggan and Joyce Van Patten) with a dangerous grin on his face and demands: "I want money and I want it now." Nothing from this point on goes as planned. The home invasion tears the veneer of civility that has been holding the couple's loveless marriage together, exposing their lies and schemes, while Bone (as Kotto's character is called) is revealed as a conflicted serial rapist just looking for a little tenderness. Directed with raw energy and aggressive flamboyance, this cynical portrait of American hypocrisy and corruption is more punchy than perceptive, a little glib in its conclusions, but thoroughly unpredictable in its execution. Cohen tweaks stereotypes and twists expectations, while offbeat characters and juicy dialogue electrify the drama. Kotto takes a big, meaty bite of his role, commanding every scene with a threat always beneath his stocky frame and burning eyes. Jeannie Berlin makes a memorable appearance as a ditzy shoplifter with a thoroughly off-center philosophy. --Sean Axmaker

Only Joel and Ethan Coen, the fraternal director and producer team behind art-house hits such as The Big Lebowski and Fargo and masters of quirky and ultra-stylish genre subversion, would dare nick the plot line of Homer's Odyssey for a comic picaresque saga about three cons on the run in 1930s Mississippi. Our wandering hero in this case is one Ulysses Everett McGill, a slick-tongued wise guy with a thing about hair pomade (George Clooney, blithely sending up his own dapper image) who talks his chain-gang buddies (Coen-movie regular John Turturro and newcomer Tim Blake Nelson) into lighting out after some buried loot he claims to know of. En route they come up against a prophetic blind man on a railroad truck, a burly, one-eyed baddie (the ever-magnificent John Goodman), a trio of sexy singing ladies, a blues guitarist who's sold his soul to the devil, a brace of crooked politicos on the stump, a manic-depressive bank robber, and--well, you get the idea. Into this, their most relaxed film yet, the Coens have tossed a beguiling ragbag of inconsequential situations, a wealth of looping, left-field dialogue, and a whole stash of gags both verbal and visual. O Brother (the title's lifted from Preston Sturges's classic 1941 comedy Sullivan's Travels) is furthermore graced with glowing, burnished photography from Roger Deakins and a masterly soundtrack from T-Bone Burnett that pays loving homage to American '30s folk styles--blues, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, and more. And just to prove that the brothers haven't lost their knack for bad-taste humor, we get a Ku Klux Klan rally choreographed like a cross between a Nuremberg rally and a Busby Berkeley musical. --Philip Kemp

Description

Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney, THE PERFECT STORM) busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his own chain-mates from the chain gang -- bad-tempered Pete (John Turturro, SUMMER OF SAM), and sweet, dimwitted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson, HAMLET). With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain -- before it's lost forever in a flood -- the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens, and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman, COYOTE UGLY), it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses, and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing movie!.......2007-07-03

This is a classy release of an all-time-favorite classic. George Clooney played Batman, and here he's doing a hillbilly chicken dance in a fake beard. Great writing, great acting, great music. What's not to love? We wore out our VHS copy!

5 out of 5 stars something old, something new.......2007-06-30

Comedies don't get much better than this.

Clooney, Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson are relentlessly hilarious in this loosely Homeric epic of escape from a chain gang in America's early twentieth-century South. You can love this movie without knowing Homer, of course, though it's based on that bard's Oddysey.

That's the common touch of both Homer and his erstwhile partners-in-crime, producers Ethan and Joel Coen.

Filming this flick must have been more fun than a body should have. From the blind oracle on the railroad pump-car warning about the 'Ob-stackles of life' to the 'Sigh-REENS' that appear to have 'loved (Pete) up ... and then turned him into a horny toad' to the delicious stares and triumphant penultimate scene where the Soggy Bottom Boys regale a political rally with their irresistable hit 'Man of Constant Sorrows', O BROTHER never falters.

It's a film for watching over and over again, preferably introducing somebody who hasn't seen it each time you do.

Ne'er doubt! Buy O BROTHER WHERE ARE THOU and hold onto it for dear life.

O Brother Where Art Thou

Title: O Brother Where Art Thou
Director: Joel Coen
Release Date: 2000

Based on the epic by Homer, this movie takes place at the end of the Great Depression area of 1935. Three men named Everet (George Clooney), Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), and Pete (John Turino), escape on a chain gang in southern Mississippi. When they escape, they meet a man that is blind from polyps that is similar to Homer. The man tells the three men that they must travel to seek the desire that they want. Everet thinks that the old man was making nonsense, but Delmar and Pete think that the old man was telling the truth in their future. The men do a lot of things in this movie such as getting saved, making a record, helping a thief in a bank robbery, and confronting the KKK. (Klu Klux Klan) This movie is rated PG- 13 so the adults might not want to let their kids want to watch the movie. They also have a great soundtrack that won a Grammy for soundtrack of the year. The movie has funny jokes that make you crack up laughing. George Clooney gives one of his best roles of his career. John Goodman guest stars in the movie as a con man that steals the men's money. The people who like funny country movies, this might be the movie for you. It won't be long until this movie will become apart of your DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-04-10

I've given this movie more repeat views than maybe any other movie ever, for two reasons. Firstly, there is the incredible soundtrack--I was not a bluegrass fan until I fell in love with this movie, and the songs were good enough to win me over. Secondly, the dialogue is hilarious. Every time I watch it, I catch a little bit I may have missed before. Coens at their best. Made me rethink my opinion of George Clooney, as well.

2 out of 5 stars Worthwhile music, movie falls flat........2007-04-07

I think it's odd that the movie announces at the beginning that it's based on Homer's Odyssey, as the storyline barely follows in the theme of The Odyssey at all. The music is awesome and I reccomend the soundtrack, but honestly the movie didn't do it for me. Weak plot, annoying characters, lame ending. I just wasn't impressed at all.

Geena Davis and her former husband, director Renny Harlin, attempted to pick up the pieces after the debacle of their box-office disaster, Cutthroat Island. What they came up with was this repulsive ode to American film noir, based on a script by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) about an amnesiac schoolteacher (Davis) who searches for her true identity and finds she is actually a secret agent immersed in a deadly plot to topple the government. Mechanistic in its violence, obnoxious in its attitude, the film makes Davis, a once-promising actress, nothing more than a special effect. She tosses one to sadists in the audience by allowing her character to be beaten, punched unconscious, and tortured. The DVD release has optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, plus Dolby surround sound, theatrical trailer, cast information, optional French-language soundtrack and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Movie........2007-06-16

This film is really one of the best action films Ive ever seen. It is truly fun to watch, even if you watch it over and over again. I was most surprised by Geena Davis. Her performance is actually very good as an action star. Her action and her acting were both done extremely well. Then theres Samuel L. Jackson. God, hes cool in this film. He has so many lines that are largely funny and not corny. Him and Geena have a good chemistry on screen that really makes the movie work. The action is pretty much non stop. Those action scenes are shot very nicely and they look awesome. This movie most certainly isnt meant to be taken seriously and is meant to have fun watching. It succeeds in doing so. Its a great little action film that will keep you entertained even if you watch it a dozen of times.

4 out of 5 stars Get the popcorn and enjoy........2007-06-12

I heard that this movie tanked at the US box office and i'm not sure why because its far better than many of the "blockbusters".
I lived in Singapore and it just ran and ran there in a couple of theaters.

Renny Harlin was married to Gena Davis at the time and it all seemed a bit incestuous and it followed the record breaking disaster that was "Cutthroat Island" so I guess nobody in the "biz" wanted to go near it.

This however is a good movie. It flows well the actions scenes are great and Samuel Jackson is wonderful. I'd never heard of him but Craig Bierko makes a great villain and I cant see why he hasnt done more. Yes there are plot holes but no more than the average Tarantino movie.

I would rather sit through a rerun of of this than have to watch Spiderman 3 ever again.

4 out of 5 stars About Twin Towers.......2007-04-22

I saw this movie and it held my attention from the beginning, as well. But, I was very surprised about the statement made about blowing up the Twin Towers and blaming it on the Muslims.
Does anyone remember that? It was near the middle of the movie. Interesting, because the movie was made during the mid-90's and the Towers were actually blown up and it was blamed on Muslims.

5 out of 5 stars One Great Action Movie.......2007-02-11

This movie is over the top, smartly written, and perfectly made. It is Renny Harlin's masterpiece, and my favorite Samuel Jackson movie. The screenplay by Shane Black is complex and full of smart, funny dialog. The pairing of Davis and Jackson is very enjoyable, and the action scenes are some of the best ever in action movie history. Unrealistic? Yes. One of those movies you can watch over and over and never get sick of it? To me, yes. Harlin is a brilliant director when given the decent material he needs to work with; This is one of his most shining moments. Great ensemble cast, cinematography, and sounds really great loud. Love the scene w/Jackson on Larry King. That is some funny stuff. A must for every action movie fan.

1 out of 5 stars Great movie--Lousy DVD transfer.......2007-01-18

I really like this movie. Geena Davis has never been cuter, and Samuel L. Jackson has never been seedier. I really enjoyed this movie in the theater and later on tape.

Then I bought the DVD. And it stinks. It is the worst DVD transfer I've ever seen. Every chapter transition pixellates during the transition. It hurts my eyes to watch it. I finally took the DVD out after 15 or 20 minutes. I've never seen a DVD do this, except for poorly-burned copies of old, scratched-up DVDs. The only redeeming factor is that I only paid $3 for it from another retailer when purchased at the same time as SOAP.

I've never seen a DVD do this. Stay away from this cheaply-made DVD.

Few early rockers were more gifted or less honored in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special, originally broadcast on Showtime, came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, A Black and White Night survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.

Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late '60s and early '70s touring band. That astonishing lineup is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honor Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances.

Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue chip admiration society came as much for the caliber of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman," Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely," or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby." On this night, he handled all of them with fervor and finesse. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars A DVD For Everyone.......2007-06-28

This DVD with Roy Orbison is for all music lovers, not just for his fans. It's interesting to learn how he has contributed to the music world, and how his songs have been used and reproduced by many of our leading musical artists. He influenced all genres of modern music, including Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and many others. When you watch this DVD, you will understand why.

4 out of 5 stars Key performance.......2007-05-30

Filmed all in black and white, this is a non-commented recording of the performance only. Roy plays the usual songs and is backed-up by a star-studded cast of Roy's fans. Too bad that Bruce Springsteen keeps trying to take the limelight. Wikipedia has an excellent write-up.

It's a one of a kind show. Great performers, impromtu performance by great musicians & Roy is the best.

Product Description

It's been three years since Emery Simms was wrongfully imprisoned for a murder he didn't commit. Emery's best friend Brandon (Blakemore) and ex-wife Connie (Fox) are now married, running a successful restaurant and nightclub in Atlanta. Their lives change dramatically, however, when Simms is killed in prison and new evidence emerges as to Brandon's role in the framing of his friend. When Emery's long-estranged brother Donovan (White) enters the picture, he becomes determined to unearth the explosive truth behind his brother's downfall. New motives, deceptions and lies are revealed, but the closer Donovan gets, the deeper he'll get himself into trouble, and the greater the possibility of lying in a grave, right next to his brother.

3 out of 5 stars This one was ok........2007-07-03

The first "Motives" was better in my opinion, although, this one did bring about closure to the first one because of what happened to "Shemar Moore's character in Pt. 1. I was glad to see that justice kind of prevailed.

5 out of 5 stars Payback Can Be Great.......2007-06-18

If you saw Motives you had plenty of questions about the future well Motives 2 answers those questions. You need to see this if you saw Motives. It picks up a few years later and it gets right into it. Greed will get anyone killed and this movie shows it. No matter who you are the wrong motive will come back on you. You must watch Motives first though. So watch Motives then watch Motives 2 and have a great evening.

3 out of 5 stars Puzzling.......2007-06-14

I think Motives 2 is an excellent movie, even though, one must have watched Motives 1 to fully understand this twisted mystery. Napping in between settings is most definitely not recommended.....Put on your P.I. thinking cap!

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-06-13

This is a good sequel from Motives 1. Do buy. I enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars This Review is for all Movie Fans.......2007-06-04

This is the sequel I have been waiting for all year!!!

First, let me say that I am a huge fan of White, Fox, Jackson, Joe Torrey and am encouraged by the work of young filmmakers at "Rainforest Films." If you saw Motives 1, you know that the ground plan was laid out with everyone being a suspect in the murder of Allanah James (Golden Brooks from Girlfriends fame). Kelsy Scott continues with the story from here, revealing more information about the major players and how they each have a motive to get what they want.

Well in Part 2 "Retribution" is to be paid by the real Killer, (Blakemore) and boy does he have to pay for what he did (see the movie). Although this one is not as truly as exciting as Part 1 (see the other reviews), it was wonderful to see all these beautiful African American faces do well together (Sharon Leal, etc) on film. It would have been nice to see Shemar in some scenes, because the movie is about him to begin with.

It was a plus to see more of Jackson, he is on his way up in Hollywood. Of course, Joe Torrey steals the show for me (he is the funny man) - in fact I watched it 5 times in a row just so I could see his part and how he lit up the screen with his presence. Other newcomers presented themselves well on camera too. The sex scenes were well done (not too much).

Overall, it was not as slick as the first one, but still entertaining. My prediction is that we will discover in Part 3 that Connie, the Lawyer, and Donovan have mastermined this whole thing from the very beginning. Who knows, its just my guess. We will have to wait and see.

Since there was no 4.5 on the scale, I gave the film 4 pts. Had to take away 1pt because there was no Shemar, and 1pt because it moved too slow, it could have been more suspensful. But I gave it 1/2 pt because Kelsy Scott did a great job at letting Jackson's (character) be as mean and nasty as he should have been. It helped the movie a lot. Then I gave another 1/2 pt because the filmmakers did such a fine job at answering ALL the questions pertaining to the story, some films leave the audience with too too many unanswered questions and its hard to get a feel for having learned something.

Cant wait to see part 3. This film is worth having in your home movie collection.

Released in late 1999, The Bone Collector was originally promoted as a thriller in the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, suggesting that it would earn a place among those earlier, better films. Nice try, but no cigar. The Bone Collector settles instead for mere competence and the modest rewards of a well-handled formula. With a terrific cast at his service, director Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games) turns the pulpy indulgence of Jeffery Deaver's novel into a slick potboiler that is grisly fun only if you don't pick it apart.

Noyce expertly builds palpable tension around a series of gruesome murders that lead us into the darkest nooks of New York City. Now a bedridden quadriplegic prone to life-threatening seizures and suicidal depression, forensics detective Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) gets a new lease on life with a sharp young beat cop (Angelina Jolie) who's a wizard at analyzing crime scenes. She does field work while he deciphers clues from his high-tech Manhattan loft, and as they narrow the search their lives are increasingly endangered. As this formulaic plot grows moldy, Noyce resorts to narrative shortcuts, using perfunctory scenes to manipulate the viewer and taking morbid pleasure in his revelation of the murder scenes. And yet it all works, to a point, and the cast (including Queen Latifah and Luiz Guzmán) is much better than the material. If you're looking for a few good thrills, The Bone Collector is a pretty safe bet. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars How to solve a mystery?.......2007-05-10

The story was nicely produced with excellent color. The mystery being solved was nicely handled throughout the movie. The killer was completely unexpected and it was unclear why the detective had not checked up on those around him (the killer in this case) when it was realized the killer had to be a forensic expert. This loose end in no way interferred with the suspense. After the climactic scene the rest of the movie seemed superflous. I guess they just had to get Angelina Jolie into a tight dress some how and bring Lincoln's sister into the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Denzel fans must purchase.......2007-05-07

Excellent movie, close as you can get to the book. Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington chemistry was off the scale. Will keep you guessing until the end of the movie.

2 out of 5 stars Recommended for someone that doesn't have anything better to do in his or her life. .......2007-04-20

This movie is probably one of the most boring movies of both Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie's careers. I was expecting something in the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs or Seven. Wow was I wrong. This is the type of movie that I'd only recommend watching if you don't have anything better to do. Your time would be better spent reading the novel by Jeffery Deaver.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-12-23

As a thriller, this is a pretty good movie, but it suffers from what the books suffer from - namely Rhymes irritatingly correct deductions from the evidence when many many alternate possibilities must, and do, exist.

That quibble aside, this movies looks pretty good - in a "post-Seven dystopian gloom" filled kind of a way. Jolie looks great - as always. I can watch this movie just to catch THAT dress at the end. Oh boy.

Why did the movie producers change Jolie's character from Jewish to the daughter-of-an-Oirish cop? Sachs to Donaghy? Did they think an ex-model Jewish beat cop was what, too incredible? Surely in whatever movie she is in, Ms Jolie stretches credibility just because people as beautiful as her don't exist in real life doing menial jobs like the rest of us. So why change her character? If I remember rightly ( and I may not ) isn't Sachs' Jewishness very useful in at least one of Rhymes later cases?

4 out of 5 stars as always a great movie with a great actor.......2006-11-04

i loved this movie-it is a thinkers movie-not fluff or gore.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stories.......2007-02-10

The Franklin stories are wonderful for 3-6-year-olds. I live in Switzerland, where we don't get shows like this very often, and I find the lessons heartwarming and valuable. Franklin's perspective is always realistic for a child, and more importantly, easy for kids to identify with. The Blanket episode perfectly fits my 3-year-old, and the story about learning to ride a bike actually inspired my cautious 5-year-old to go back out on his own bike and try again. I'm disappointed to see the low ratings based on such things as a possible defect in a particular DVD, rather than the content of the shows themselves. I highly recommend this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Another great video.......2007-01-14

We live in Asia and my daughter got exposure to Franklin through books and when my grandmother sent me Franklin - Homemade Cookies we watched it all the time and I felt it was time for another. This video is equally loveable and actually has more stories on it that we had previously read together as a family. My daughter loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Great concert.......2007-05-13

The sound quality is outstanding. My only complaint is that the DVD version that I bought is not widescreen. I had seen this concert on a hi-def channel and it was mesmerizing. It was a widescreen version as well, and I guess I was expecting the same experience. Don't get me wrong, if you have a standard 4:3 screen, this will do you well. However if you own a 16:9 widescreen display, then you will have the black bars along the sides. I'll probably keep my fingers crossed that a high definition version will one day be released and I'll pick that up.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2007-02-22

The dvd and added cd arrived in a timely fashion, the products were in excellent condition. I would definitely buy from this seller again.

5 out of 5 stars The best live music video........2007-02-12

Those of us who grew up listening to Roy Orbison (and those who didn't) will enjoy this vintage Orbison music. The black and white production adds to the impact of the superbly mixed tunes. Orbison nevered sounded so good, and he's backed by an all-star cast. Unquestionably, the best live performance I've seen captured on video.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......2007-01-09

Black & White Night is one of best dvd's I have ever heard. If you like good music, You will LOVE this one. Orbison & friends give it all they got.

5 out of 5 stars Incomparable.......2006-11-12

This is one of the most moving performances of any kind I have ever seen. The opening, with "Only the Lonely", sends chills down my spine. "In Dreams" is one of the most romantic songs ever written. There are good old-fashioned rockers, with nice interplay among the various members of the ensemble, and of course the inimitable ballads, culminating with "Pretty Woman". If you didn't already realize how amazing Roy Orbison was, the love and respect shown him by this cast of superstars is statement enough. It is hard to think of many other artists who would inspire such a tribute. I sometimes start the DVD to watch and hear a particular song, and end up playing the whole thing.

One wonders if anyone had a premonition that Orbison would die less than a year after this concert; it is fortunate for us that this tribute took place and was captured forever.

If you've grown weary of gangsta thrillers and violent depictions of thug life, ATL will hit you like a breath of fresh air. Based on a story by Antwone Fisher (writer and subject of the 2003 film that bears his name) and written by Tina Gordon Chism, it's essentially a contemporary African-American riff on American Graffiti, focusing on a group of teenagers on the cusp of adulthood, learning valuable life lessons as they strive to make a better future for themselves and their loved ones. The title refers to the airport designation for Atlanta, and that's where orphaned 17-year-old Rashad (Tip Harris, aka rapper T.I.) lives with his younger brother Anton (Evan Ross) and uncle George (Mykelti Williamson). They're poor like most Southside families, but they're making ends meet, caring for each other and forging life-long friendships with guys like the smart, ambitious Esquire (Jackie Long), transplanted New Yorker Brooklyn (Albert Daniels), and likable homeboy Teddy (Jason Weaver). On Sunday nights they hang at the Cascade roller rink, trying to impress the girls with their latest moves, and director Chris Robinson (veteran of many music videos) captures it all with casual momentum and genuine affection for his characters. A little too casual perhaps (the pacing sometimes lags), but with a lively mix of color and music, ATL manages to be positive and hopeful without sanitizing the harsher realities (including drugs and violence) of modern urban America. There are threats and obstacles to overcome, but ATL is all about potential, striving for goals and accepting responsibility for one's own actions. Between this and Get Rich or Die Tryin', which example would you prefer to follow? --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "ATL" - ain't what I thought it would be.......2007-05-20

I came across this movie on cable recently and I was surprized - I really enjoyed it. I remember this movie came out last year about the same time as "Akleelah and the Bee" - another excellent film - but based on what I saw on the commercials for it, I said, "Oh please, not ANOTHER hood movie with black kids shooting each other up" and passed on it. I went to see "Akleelah" instead because it was being promoted as a movie with positive black characters, which we need more of. I enjoyed it but now after seeing "ATL", I realized seeing either one of those movies would have been a wise choice.

Produced by Will Smith's production company, Overbrook Entertainment and based a story written by Antwone Fisher (who was himself the subject of a movie directed by Denzel Washington a few years back), "ATL" is far from being your typical black film about coming of age in the hood. It does show some instances of drug dealing and violence, but very few, and that is not the central focus of the story anyway. This is an urban tale with a message that is powerful - striving and working hard to achieve the better things in life in an honest fashion, and having some fun along the way. That includes Sunday nights at the Cascade - a popular roller rink on the southside, where all of the kids love to hang out and have a good time. The focal point of "ATL" is on the lives and the camaraderie of four friends who ponder their futures as they approach graduation.

Because I am not really into today's rap music, I was not too familiar with T.I., other than from his song that was a big hit last year, "What You Know". But I thought he showed wonderful potential in the starring role of Rashad, a poor, 17 year old high school kid who has a gift for art and lives with his janitor uncle because both of his parents were killed in an auto accident. He is extremely protective of his little brother, Ant (Evan Ross, Diana's son). Ant's only goal is to make big money and sport bling-bling, since he feels this is the only way he can gain some respect and attention. He decides to get on the fast track to obtain what he wants, but he's not quite ready to deal with the consequences.

The supporting cast, which includes veteran actors Keith David, Lonette McKee, Mykelti Williamson (his poetic reading later in the film blew me away) and Jason Weaver as a high school super senior, was perfectly chosen. Lauren London, who plays New New, does a great job as a sassy, ghetto-fabulous diva with a secret. She and Rashad begin dating and their relationship is a mutual one until a chance event causes the truth to unfold. Also to take note of is the intelligent and proud Esquire (Jackie Long) who has dreams of going to an Ivy League college but fears because of his parents' income and his background, he may never get the opportunity. Big Boi from the hip-hop duo OutKast and singer Monica also appear in the film, although Big Boi's role is way more pivotal to the storyline, while Monica simply makes a cameo appearance.

Think of this as sort of an updated, African-American version of "American Graffiti" - but one I can definitely relate to much more, with various intertwined stories of everyday life in the Georgia hood. Overall, this film speaks of dreams and aspirations - realized, potential, and yes, unachieved. "ATL" is inspirational in its own way - a humorous, touching and refreshing alternative to the typical films out there about growing up poor and black with the odds stacked against you. No, yall, you don't have to die trying to get rich. There is a better way! A must see.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE ATL.......2007-05-13

I RECENTLY MOVED TO ATLANTA FROM CHICAGO(HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MOVIE) BUT I LIKE TS MOVIE. IT SPEAKS OF THE TROUBLES OF A YOUNG MAN FOM A POOR NEIGHBORHOOD STILL TRYING TO DO RIGHT WITH HIS LIFE. TI PLAYED THE ROLE OF HIS CHARACTER WELL AND I ADMIRE HIM FOR IT. WE NEED MORE MEN TO STEP AND DO THE RIGHT THING INSTEAD OF STANDING ON THE CORNER TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK

5 out of 5 stars Like No Other.......2007-03-16

The movie is sooo different than what you see in the video "What You Know". I won't lie. When I saw the video, I thought the movie was going to be about that hip hop ride or die gangsta lean but when I saw it, it was completely different and I really enjoyed it. I know alot of people(younger people)are saying that it's wack b/c TI is not portraying himself as a thug, a hustla/pimp beddin down big booty chicks gold grillin' and ice chillin'(which is pretty much what most rappers talk about) But it was a great movie about everyday life as a black kid growing up in the ATL. Rashad had saved up the money that he was making as a janitor for his brother Ant. He didn't take his earnings and go out and throw some D's on his ride-he had the vision of investing into his brother, who in the end got back on the right track and "let go of all his d-boy ambitions". It sent out a good message to our youth in more than just one way as well: "You don't have to be a d-boy to have money" That right there makes this movie a hit. We need more movies like this to inspire our youth that there is more than one way to get rich and you don't have to die while tryin'to do it.

3 out of 5 stars decent.......2007-02-11

For me, ATL really lacked substance. The first half of the movie carried on entirely too long focusing on nothing but teenagers having fun and partying with friends. That's all fine and good in real life, but as part of a storyline in a movie it just doesn't work. Even if you're a teenanger, I'd find it hard to believe you'd be able to find something interesting going on here.

With that said, the plot surprised me by drastically changing direction by the second half, and became more serious with a focus on drama. This is what the movie should have done much, much sooner. Talking about the difficulty of drugs and friends deciding if they really want to hang out together in the long run were important topics brought up in the second half, and this is the part of the movie that really made up for the boring extensive first half. Also, the final 10 minutes were really good.

Because the first half of the movie was dominated with so much nothingness, I really can't recommend this film to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars OLD FASHION FUN.......2006-12-21

Versatility is a must. These rappers did a great job in the roles they portrayed in the movie ATL. This is not the typical urban boys in the hood. Although there are scenes that depict the urban areas, it showed how youth did and should enjoy everyday life.

Only one first scene is deserving of all the adjectives used to sell this. The rest are boring. There is simply not enough good viewing to justify this purchase.
