Product Description
Paul Miller (Paul Rudd) has struggled in Hollywood for years, and now he's had enough. But not just of show business life. In two days, he will kill himself. But in true Hollywood style, he's hired a film crew to chronicle the events leading up to it. An up and coming director (Adam Scott) jumps at the chance to make the documentary, but soon faces a moral dilemma as to whether or not he can allow such a tragedy to happen.

Overlooked in theaters but gaining a modest cult following in video release, writer-director John Herzfeld's underrated 2 Days in the Valley has a lot going for it, not the least being a variety of interesting characters played by a superb ensemble cast. The complex plot centers on a mild-mannered hit man (Danny Aiello) who is hired by an icy killer (James Spader) to assist him on his latest job. Eric Stoltz and Jeff Daniels play the vice cops who stumble on the murder scene. Their investigation leads to a colorful array of San Fernando Valley denizens, including a has-been director (played by director Paul Mazursky) and a snobbish art dealer (Greg Cruttwell) whose lives come together in unexpected and interesting ways. Emphasizing characters that consistently hold our attention with humor and poignant desire, this clever thriller fits nicely into the eccentric category of "Only in California." --Jeff Shannon

    Description

A cold-hearted killer, a crook who cooks, a drop-dead blonde and a couple of cops are looking for sex, looking for money, looking to stay alive. But all of them are looking to get out of the valley and they've got just two days to do it.

3 out of 5 stars Over-the-Top Parody of Crime Film Archetypes & Los Angeles Culture........2007-05-11

"2 Days in the Valley" is a comedic crime flick that follows the tortuous entanglements of 10 Los Angelinos who, in the space of 2 days, are inadvertently brought together by a murder-for-profit plot. Sangfroid Lee (James Spader) hires has-been hit man Dosmo (Danny Aiello) to assist in a murder, with plans to dispose of Dosmo afterward and collect on an insurance payoff with his bombshell partner in crime Helga (Charlize Theron). Meanwhile, a failed film director at the end of his tether, Teddy (Paul Mazursky) stumbles upon a kindly nurse named Audrey (Marsha Mason) as he looks for someone to adopt his dog before he commits suicide. Audrey's obnoxious art dealer brother Allan (Greg Cruttwell) and his mousy personal assistant Susan (Glenn Headly) are held hostage by Dosmo as he evades Lee. And burned-out cop Alvin (Jeff Daniels) and his ambitious partner Wes (Eric Stoltz) come upon the murder scene while cruising to bust massage parlors.

"2 Days in the Valley" isn't what I would normally call a "black comedy". This movie makes fun of murder, sociopaths, police, and misery in general. But it's not subtle or clever. It's an over-the-top parody of crime film archetypes and Hollywood players. It's often too simplistic and in-your-face for my taste, but it has some funny moments. Some members of the audience will undoubtedly enjoy the knock-down drag-out brawl between Teri Hatcher and Charlize Theron, as Becky and Helga. But you have to like your catfights very stagey. If you're looking for something light and overstated, "2 Days in the Valley" might fit the bill. The DVD (HBO 1997) includes a trailer (3 min) and text bios and filmographies for 11 cast members and writer/director John Herzfeld. Subtitles are available in English, French, and Spanish. Dubbing available in French.

    5 out of 5 stars Great flick.......2007-02-04

The lives of several strange characters intersect in John Herzfeld's quirky crime comedy. A depressed has-been director (Paul Mazursky), an arrogant art dealer and his long-suffering assistant, a loser hit man (Danny Aiello), a cold assassin (James Spader) and his girlfriend (Charlize Theron), all with several cops (Keith Carradine, Eric Stoltz and Jeff Daniels) in their pursuit, get tangled up in a murderous insurance scam.

I'll mention the fine acting by Glenne Headley and Marsha Mason as none of the other reviewers have mentioned them, but the entire cast was particularly good. Since this was a comedy, I think it's worth pointing out several of the inside jokes. Most obviously, Paul Mazursky's character is a down-and-out director with one Emmy for a made-for-television movie and, after that, the world's biggest flop. Of course Mazursky is a quite excellent screenwriter and director. Less obviously, Danny Aiello's down on his luck hitman has been working in a pizza parlor. Aiello of course played the owner of the pizza parlor in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing." [...]

That's right, and at the end of the film we're let into the fact that the cop has been given 48 hours to turn in his badge because the department has determined that he has been acting like a total jerk to all the citizens he's come in contact with, and we've just seen his last day on the job. I'm not usually very generous with my ratings, but I'll round 4.5 up to 5 for this one. Oh, and the score

4 out of 5 stars You have to been there........2007-01-06

This is Los Angeles. Being a native of more than a half a century I feel that I have some credence. This movie is funny as hell. It satarizes the many foibles of the west coast culture and may seem a little strange to folks who did not grow up here. But, it rules. Enjoy the pratfalls, the unrealistic scenes, it's all possible in L.A.

3 out of 5 stars PULP FICTION jr........2006-12-14

More like ***1/2 for the movie. I would have given 4 stars had the disc had some extras, but all that's on it are cast bios and original theatrical trailer.

There is no doubt that this movie has an incredible cast Danny Aiello ('Do The Right Thing'), Jeff Daniels ('Dumb And Dumber'), Teri Hatcher (TV's 'Desperate Houswives' & Ex-Bond Girl), Glenne Headly ('Mortal Thoughts'), Peter Horton (TV's 'thirtysomething'), legend Marsha Mason ('The Goodbye Girl'), Paul Mazursky (excellent actor AND director), James Spader ('Wall Street' & 'Sex, Lies & Videotape'), Eric Stoltz (also in 'Pulp Fiction'), and Charlize Theron ('Monster').

This is an awesome cast and everyone does a great job with their characters. Aiello is hilarious as a dog-fearing hitman, Spader is excellent as his heartless "partner", Hatcher is competent as an ex-professional skiier, Glenne Headley is very believable as a passive secretary who seems to be the only one who can get along w/Aiello's character, Mazursky probably shows the most depth as a tortured Hollywood director who has lost his touch and recognition, Stoltz is likeable as a good-hearted vice cop, briton Gregg Cruttwell meshes well with his character as a spoiled art-dealer, Charlize Theron makes her debut (not counting uncredited role in CoCIII) here, and is very good and very hot. Most interesting is Jeff Daniels as the "bad" cop (more like a jerk), as he is mostly known for his good-guy roles and does a superb job here.

The reason I say Pulp Fiction jr., is because of the many intersecting storylines throughout the movie, the all-star cast, use of music throughout, and general "feel". There's double-crosses, triple-crosses and many storylines that keep the viewer entertained for 105 minutes. I'm certainly not ripping on it, it's just that after Fiction came out in 1994 and took the world by storm, it was inevitable that many other similar movies would follow. As it were, this is certainly one of the better ones.

Like I said above, would have given 4 stars it the DVD had some extras, but the package itself is lame. There is a VERY HOT scene w/Theron & Spader and director/writer John Herzfeld ('15 Minutes'), wrote a very solid/dense script with very little holes and his directing ability is excellent here, as well. Corraling these many all-stars can be a tough thing to do (see: Oceans 13).

Adding to the vibe of the movie are two excellent songs that really moved me: "Gone For Good" by Morphine and "Nobody Knows Me" by Lyle Lovett. These fit the movie perfectly and really add a deeper layer to the events that unfold before you.

If you haven't seen this movie than at least rent it, and when a better collector's edition comes out, then definitely pick it up to own. (Also if you can find the S/T, then pick that one up, too, as the whole album is very good from top to bottom).

The Last Days of World War II is actually three separate and outstanding History Channel documentaries about the horrifying, surreal violence that marked the decisive months of the war in Europe. The first film begins with Hitler's declaration that the Third Reich would last 1,000 years, yet by 1945 Germany was losing on every major battlefront. Still, tens of thousands of civilian and military lives would be lost before fighting ceased: in the Battle of the Bulge, pitting 600,000 Allied troops against a Nazi surge in Belgium; in Dresden, where Allied bombers spent days fire-bombing women and children; in the subway tunnels of Berlin, where refugees were drowned when a paranoid, sleepless Hitler ordered them flooded to stave off Russian soldiers. Plentiful interviews with former officers on all sides of the war, commentary by historians, and remarkable footage of battles, concentration camps, and the Nuremberg trials make this a compelling narrative rich with enlightening details.

A second disc includes a superb piece about the destruction of a U.S. Navy submarine-chaser off the coast of Maine, and a strategic cover-up that denied, for more than 60 years, that the ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. Finally, the story of the German-Japanese alliance, and the role of a geography professor named Karl Haushofer (who coined the phrase "geopolitics") in a number of key wartime events, make a fascinating subject for the final production. --Tom Keogh

Complete Seasons 1 and 2 of Mork & Mindy. 8 DVDs and over 1,200 minutes. Bizarre television comedy with Robin Williams as Mork from Ork, who is an alien hatched from an egg, sent to investigate Earth and report back to his superiors. As an outsider, Mork is unfamiliar with human customs and often questions some of the strange traditions that we take for granted. Much of the humor relies on Williams' unique comic voices and mannerisms. The show was perhaps most famous for Mork's saying, 'nanoo nanoo.'

5 out of 5 stars My 10 month old loves these.......2007-04-07

Our 10 month old baby girl loves these DvDs, we bought both the daytime and nightime ones and she sits and avidly watches them. They hold her attention great and the basic but bright colours on the screen catch her eye from across the room. They are simple enough and repetitive enough that she seems to be taking them in quite well. As yet we have not seen any constant signing but every now again she does what we think are the starts of signs, we are just having to learn how she does her signs.

She already knows the starting music when it comes on she sits right down ready to watch. We have these DvDs and others playing most the day while she plays in the living room and she runs back and forth then takes a few moments to sit and watch them, sometimes longer. They have also helped her father and I learn the basic signs and we now use them as much as possible.

I would definatly reconmend these to others and as we have our next baby due in a month I am definatly going to have him watch them aswell at a much earlier stage.

      3 out of 5 stars Not Thrilled.......2007-04-05

This video moves at a very, very, slow pace. I understand the need for repetition, but the pace does not hold my child's attention...it just seemed to drag on and on.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Follow.......2007-01-18

This video was simple but effective. It emphasizes USEFUL signs that are easy to learn and incorporate into everyday routines. My toddler picked up the signs surprisingly quickly. Though not done perfectly, it did help me understand what he wanted to say. Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing results in only ONE DAY! Wow!.......2006-10-03

A friend of mine sent me this video because she knew my 18 month old is on the brink of talking, but gets a little frustrated when he can't get me to understand what he wants! I popped the Happy Signs DVD in one morning for him while I made his breakfast, barely watching it myself. That evening, I was giving him dinner and picked up his bib to put it on, and he made the sign for "bib"! I was shocked! I put in the DVD again, and sure enough -- the little characters on the video were making the same sign! So we watched it together so I could learn the signs too. The next morning, he pulled me into the kitchen and I asked him what he wanted and he made the sign for drink... again, I was totally amazed! I would love to say it's just that my son is a genius... but I really think it is the video. We watch it about every other day now, and even though he already learned the signs, he really likes the characters and watching the other kids/babies. I wish I would have started this sooner -- maybe he wouldn't have gone through his squealing phase when he was trying to communicate! Oh, and I promise you will get the cute theme song stuck in your head for days.

3 out of 5 stars For the effort.......2007-03-22

I had seen a couple of episodes on TV in India as a kid. This is an earnest attempt to bring RK Narayan's work to life, that said, it falls short. RK Narayan paints a very colorful world with words, rich, colorful, bustling with activity. This might just do it for a kid, but as you grow older, your expectations change, and the bar is raised higher. This may well be the best thing with the given resrouces, but I enjoyed reading the books more than the dvd. The other thing that stuck me was that though RK Narayan's books are in English, they are very much Indian in thought, but this DVD is in English and it is missing that Indian spirit, unlike the books which opens you to the rich colorful Indian culture, soceity etc, If you saw this as a kid, chances are you may not enjoy it as an adult.

      5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia .......2007-03-08

If you had seen Malgudi days as a child on doordarshan, you will surely relive those memories again, if you watch this DVD.
      Very worth gift for someone.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for Narayan fans.......2006-08-15

I watched this series on Doordarshan when it was originally telecast and was mesmerized by the simplicity of the characters and the excellent picturization. The DVD set is a wish come true, I can't wait to see it again.

3 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time substantially.......2006-01-26

If you are reading this, you probably loved the serial 'Malgudi days' on good old doordarshan and want to know how endearing it still is. Or you love the books and want to check how they are adapted to the celluloid.

The good news is that the episodes still look good and fresh. Admittedly, the repeat value for some of the episodes (which is an important consideration when you buy a dvd) is non-existent so this is something you would want to factor in your decision to buy. Some of the stories seem simplistic but that is a trait of RKN's writing (and is probably a tribute to small-town life - you do not have to complicate something that is inherently simple).

The DVD itself is packaged well and there is a neat booklet that serves as a guide for each episode. There are no other extras but since when did DVD's from India incorporate them? Still, it would have been nice if some commentary or critique were included given the popularity of Malgudi.

If you are remotely interested in the world of Malgudi, then this is a worthy buy and a fine way to indulge in nostalgia of tiled houses, elephants on roads and the easy pace of life in a bygone era of south India. Just don't expect anything earth-shattering though. IMO, Vaidyanathan's title music itself is worth the price of admission - Tanana-tanananana.

Great Britain released, PAL/Region 2&4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), French (Dolby Digital 2.0), Czech (Subtitles), Danish (Subtitles), Dutch (Subtitles), English (Subtitles), Finnish (Subtitles), French (Subtitles), Greek (Subtitles), Hungarian (Subtitles), Norwegian (Subtitles), Polish (Subtitles), Swedish (Subtitles), ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (2.35:1), SYNOPSIS: Anne of the Thousand Days is the belated film adaptation of Maxwell Anderson's 1948 stage play. The story concentrates on the romance between Britain's King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) and his ill-fated second wife Anne Boleyn (Genevieve Bujold). After holding out for marriage rather than an illegitimate union, Anne marries Henry after he sheds himself of Katherine of Aragon -- causing a rift between the Crown and the Church in the process. Anne's inability to produce a male heir leads Henry to look about for other suitable mates. Henry's sinister right-hand man Cromwell (John Colicos) arranges for Anne to be condemned on a charge of adultery. She is beheaded, while Henry disconsolately sits in Windsor Castle, regretting this callous example of political expediency. Richard Burton is ideally cast in Anne of the Thousand Days, but it is Genevieve Bujold who delivers the best, most complex performance in the film. SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu,

This film is much better than "The Tutors" series on Showtime.

      3 out of 5 stars Xplosive Review.......2003-07-12

This VHS contains the Episodes 4,5 and 6 of the first season.Episode 4 is Mutant Cush which introduce Fred Dukes aka The Blob.Jean Grey was just helping him but Blob takes it too seriousl like a crush. Then next is Speed and Spyke which introduces Storm's nephew Evan Daniels and his nemesis Pietro Maximoff.Storm thinks Evan is having trouble with his powers and thinks he must go to the Xavier Institute. But he has some other plans besides that.He has to deal with a fast rival who keeps getting him into trouble. And last is Middleverse which introduces the old-young Forge who accidently trapped himself in a dimension called Middleverse and Rogue accidently transported Nightcrawler to Middleverse. This three will rock your spine! You will love this tape!

This cassette features three episodes of the first series of
X-Men Evolution. These episodes introduce important characters of good and bad nature. They introduce THE BLOB,QUICKSILVER and SPYKE even though in series three Spyke isn't a main character.
It's best to buy or watch UnXpected Changes first if you don't get the storyline.
UnXpected Changes is the first part of Series 1.
Xplosive Days is the second part.
X marks the Spot is the third part
But you'll have to pre-order the final part out in September 2003.
This video isn't as good as some of the episodes in Series 3 but they are a good way to introduce main character.
So I believe this is one wicked video.

4 out of 5 stars just in case you were wondering what 3 episodes this include.......2003-01-15

i don't think anyone else has mentioned this, but the three episodes on this video are:
      - mutant crush, feat. the blob and jean grey
      - speed and spyke, feat. spyke and quicksilver
      - and middleverse, feat. nightcrawler and forge

these were the orig. ep. 4-6 in season one of the evolution series and thus they were the first appearances of the blob (who gets recruited by mystique and who develops a crush on jean grey), spyke and quicksilver (former friends who get recruited by mystique and the x-men respectively), and forge who has been trapped in a place outside of time b/c of an invention gone slightly awry and who gets brought back when nightcrawler gets ported there.

worth 3 or 4 stars, although these episodes aren't nearly as good as the later ones, such as the ones late in season one and season two. if i were going to get just one of the vhs tapes i'd get one of the other two first, esp. since both of those inc. an episode w/ rogue.

      5 out of 5 stars x men evolution review.......2002-12-10

I think the episodes were so,so cool. My favorite episode is
speed or spyke because it introduces the young Evan Daniel's
and he's my favourite character. I think you would really like
it. you face heap's of action and adventure. I think it's the
      best.

I had this film on VHS and wanted the digital version. Too bad, I did not get it. The Amazon supplier sent a European version that did not work in my DVD player. I called him and found out that customer care was not among his strengths. Not a good experience, but if you can get 55 Days at Peking in NTSC format, it's a great, old war film.

France released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), French (Dolby Digital 2.0), French (Subtitles), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SYNOPSIS: As another installment of Whit Stillman's trilogy, The Last Days of Disco fits chronologically between Metropolitan (1990) and Barcelona (1994), with several cameos overlapping and linking the films. During 'the very early 1980s,' friends gather at a popular Manhattan disco club reminiscent of Studio 54, where getting past the velvet ropes and inside was the first step. Edgy ad-exec Jimmy (Mackenzie Astin) can sometimes get his clients in with the help of the club's womanizing assistant manager, his pal Des (Chris Eigeman), who lets them enter via the rear door. Beautiful brunette Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale) and her former college classmate Alice (Chloe Sevigny) move about the club during the 24-minute opening club sequence. Attorney Tom (Robert Sean Leonard) takes an interest in calm, reserved Alice. Both Alice and the opinionated, assertive Charlotte hold day jobs as entry-level editorial associates at a small book publisher. With Holly (Tara Subkoff) as a third roommate, the trio rents a railroad flat in the Manhattan's Yorkville neighborhood. Charlotte throws dinner parties in an effort to solidify a social circle as an alternative to 'the ferocious pairing off' around her. SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu,
