Johnny Appleseed - A Good Folk Tale for the Whole Family.......2005-07-12
Johnny Appleseed stars Martin Short as the title character, who goes around planting America's apple orchards. Its got a good message, that even someone weird shouldn't be shunned, they could actually help you out! It also has Rob Reiner, Molly Ringwald and Michael McKean.
The bad thing I find with the Tall Tales series is the sound... I don't watch it in the media room with the sound system, I find it works better in the den on my plain old TV. There's alot of background noise that can get distracting. So no the sound and picture aren't perfect, but these are low-price family videos, so over-all they are a good deal!
Johnny Appleseed is great........2003-06-12

This lively and entertaining cable series was highlighted by lots of famous faces in familiar classic tales (as was Shelley Duvall's Fairie Tale Theater). Pecos Bill, King of the Cowboys brings together then-sizzlin' hot Steven Guttenberg and Rebecca DeMornay, fresh from box-office success ("Cocoon," "Risky Business," respectively). This mid-'80s series captures them at their most appealing. Guttenberg embodies the naively charming Pecos Bill, who was raised by wolves and rowdy enough to set dreary little Petunia City, Texas, on its staid little ear. DeMornay, as the mayor's misunderstood and tomboyish daughter, is coy and sweet, and when she grabs Pecos Bill's fancy, she has the audience rootin' for her. Like Duvall's other tales there is an appropriately good message, but one welcomed by any parent. Viewers will learn about looking at things from a different perspective, that change can be good, that acceptance and kindness are rewarded, and that the West really was wild. Martin Mull, as the town's mayor, is, as usual, excellent and funny. (Ages 4 and older) --N.F. MendozaDescription
Steve Guttenberg (Three Men and a Baby) portrays Pecos Bill, the "King of the Cowboys," in this rootin' tootin' epic. Raised by coyotes, Bill puts the "wild" in the Wild West settlement of Petunia City. When his rowdy behavior gets him run out of town, he heads for Mexico. There, Bill lassoes a cyclone to save the state of Texas from drought. His heroics become campfire legend, proving that selflessness and bravery are never forgotten. The tall tale's amazing cast includes Rebecca De Mornay, playing the sassy Slew Foot Sue, as well as comedian Martin Mull and Will & Grace's Megan Mullally.Customer Reviews:

Howard Cosell narrates this Shelley Duvall-produced version of the legendary Mudville Hogs player who saved baseball in 1888. Part of her American Tall Tales and Legends series, it features Elliott Gould as the newsboy-capped benchsitter who wants nothing more than a chance to play. Finally granted his wish, he turns out to be an ace hitter, elevating the struggling sport's profile and foiling the plans of an evil mud factory magnate to buy the stadium on the cheap and turn it into a sludge dump. Aided by his faithful fiancée (Carol Kane) and a magical mentor (Bill Macy), Gould fights the good fight until the mogul tempts him with a less-than-virtuous beauty. This 50-minute production is loaded with broad humor (pig noses make frequent appearances), amusing self-send-ups by commentators Cosell and Bob Uecker as his "color man," and a lot of fun references to the beginnings of baseball traditions. (Ages 4 and older) --Kimberly HeinrichsDescription
It's the summer of 1888, and Casey Frank (Elliott Gould) is a down-on-his-luck baseball player on the league's losingest team, the Mudville Hogs. Hard work, determination and a little bit of magic turn Casey into the game's most popular slugger. But even after striking out, the mighty Casey remains a hero for his sportsmanship and good-natured play. Carol Kane, Bob Uecker and Howard Cosell co-star in this spirited salute to both an American legend and "America's pastime."Customer Reviews:

John Henry was as big as a mountain, with arms as big as oak trees, and could do the work of 10 men in a single day. A workingman's hero, his is the story of courage, strength, and determination. This poignant retelling of the legendary steel driver of the 1860s is part of the American Tall Tales and Legends series, executive produced by Shelley Duvall. In a masterful performance, Danny Glover plays John Henry, a former slave now freeman, who builds the railroad in West Virginia. When his boss threatens to fire all the steel drivers and replace them with a steam drill, Henry musters the muscle to out-drive the machine in a rigorous contest of strength against steel. ("No steel machine will take away the jobs of the working people," Henry vows.) The dramatic film is also a love story, telling of Henry's ever-growing attraction to Polly Ann (Lynn Whitfield), whom he finally wins through charm and perseverance. The film is a must for family and classroom viewing, appropriate for all ages, and an inspiring reminder of virtues upon which America was built. --Lynn GibsonDescription

The main problem with Davy Crockett--and there are a few--is its cringe-causing datedness. Had the makers of this 1986 show stuck to the Crockett-specific era of the late 19th to early 20th century, they would have spared modern viewers, particularly those in the 4 to 12 age group that's among this video's target audience, a bewildering, double-barreled exercise in time travel. Instead, they send audiences packing--first to a time when spiky-haired kids turned up tight-jean cuffs and starched polo collars to look cool and, pathetically, counted the one-time movie king Rambo among their heroes, and next to the famous frontiersman's early Tennessee, Indian-infested stomping grounds. It's a Back to the Future-style concept: We tag along as 14-year-old Ben, the quintessential '80s kid, zooms back and forth between the two eras by way of a magic biography on loan from his teacher, who has assigned a report on the folk hero. During his predictably half smart-alecky, half way-impressed interludes with Crockett (whose aw-shucks-style portrayal by Mac Davis is a highlight), Ben witnesses the coonskin cap wearer legendarily grin down a bear and hurl a wayward comet by its tail back into space. He also is nearly mauled by Deathhug, the entirely unrealistic costumed creature parading through several scenes as Crockett's pet bear. But what's most important, judging by the tone of this film, is the pat morality lesson Ben lifts from Crockett--"Make sure you're right, then go ahead." Naturally, this mantra becomes a guiding principle back in 1986, where the former goof-off straightens his act. While Davy Crockett won't win over those used to watching slicker, sophisticated productions, there are a few moments of fun--McLean Stevenson shows up briefly as a craven Andrew Jackson, and Crockett's hillbilly high jinks at a fancy Washington dinner party seem less stale than genuinely silly. --Tammy La Gorce
Description
The multi-talented Mac Davis brings the story of America's coonskin-capped pioneer to life. On the wild frontier, Davy Crockett earns a reputation for bravery and courage. Whether it's grinning down a bear or hurling a giant comet into space, his adventures prove that anything is possible. Guided by the motto "make sure you're right, then go ahead," Davy becomes a Congressman, a battlefront hero and an inspiration to us all. McLean Stevenson (M*A*S*H) and Michael McKean (Best in Show) co-star in this epic tale of leadership and valor.

The American folksong makes it clear that Clementine is lost and gone forever, but how, and why? This Shelley Duvall production gives the titular gal a face (Duvall herself), a gold-struck miner of a father (Ed Asner), and several suitors to explain her story. The lone woman in a California mining camp, Clementine whips up baked beans for her father and the boys, and entertains them with her outrageous costumes and sunny innocence. A bespectacled nomad (David Dukes) joins the camp and falls for her, but Dad tries to broker marriage with a couple of scary but successful gold miners instead. The resulting tragedy is not belabored, and is handled in a good-natured way that will not disturb most children. Randy Newman narrates and sings the famous song, and a pre-Seinfeld Michael Richards makes a Kramer-free appearance as Sneaky Pete in this amiable 46-minute video. (Ages 5 and older) --Kimberly HeinrichsDescription
Tall Tales and Legends is a collection from America's favorite storyteller, Shelley Duvall. This series of quality family programming can be enjoyed by both parents and children. In this adapted version of the classic American folk-song Shelley Duvall portrays Clementine, who although a little clumsy, has a heart of gold, something which is ironically taken for granted in a camp full of gold-hungry miners.
