He Died with a Felafel in His Hand is the February selection in the Film Movement Series. Danny (Noah Taylor) is living in the 47th shared house of his late twenties. Obsessed with all the classic male existential dilemmas and the icons that they entail, Danny is trying to make sense of the bizarre and unexpected strangeness one can only get by living with a random series of complete strangers. Starting in the tropical, testosterone-riddled environment of Brisbane, with an overabundance males and one tomboyish girl, Sam (Emily Hamilton), Danny decides to save himself by writing the ultimate existentialist novel. The arrival of Anya (Romane Bohringer) and a Miami Vice style rental dilemma, throws his life and ultimately the house he is living in, completely off track. House #48 is in Melbourne... rain, sleet, serious young insects and dressing in black. Danny finds himself in a Kafkaesque nightmare, taking on the character of the city with a pair of philosophising Detectives and a hard-core collection of his drop-kick followers who end up discovering that in state of Victoria, the police have a tendency to shoot to kill. Escaping to Sydney and House #49, Danny comes up hard against a Melrose on Acid meets a Hetero-Fascist Sterility Conspiracy life-style conundrum in a city that is busily re-inventing itself into a new Los Angeles with ocean views. In amongst this nightmare, he is dragged kicking and screaming into an emotional upheaval that finally points the way to his own salvation. Throughout it all, Danny finds himself involved in a seemingly unresolvable love triangle between three people who are doomed to chase each other through Hell in a never-ending, unrequited, daisy-chain of desire. 4 out of 5 stars Now THAT'S comedy!.......2007-05-12

He Died with a Felafel in His Hand (Richard Lowenstein, 2001)

The movie's opening scene is a close-up of an Australian cane toad. We sit and stare at it for a bit, then a three wood lines up alongside it. It disappears, then you hear a cry of "Fore!" cut to main title, and there's a wet thwack. If you almost fall off your chair laughing at this scene, then I can guarantee you that He Died with a Felafel in His Hand is a movie that you're going to enjoy in a big way.

The movie follows Danny (Max's Noah Taylor), a chronically unemployed Australian who fancies himself a writer, as he tries to find cheap living arrangements that don't feature neurotic and/or insane flatmates. A number of those we meet in his first living arrangement ("House #43") keep popping up as he goes from place to place, including his childhood pal Sam (Emily Hamilton, probably best remembered on this side of the pond for Haunted, her first big-screen role) and his best friend Flip (Brett Stewart). Other than that, I can't say much of anything about the movie without unveiling a number of spoilers; like most slice-of-life films, every event builds on what comes before it.

It's funny, but laced with a number of moments of surprisingly poignant human drama that will keep the chick-flick fans happy. Some of the acting is a bit subpar, and some of the minor characters aren't fully fleshed out, but these are nitpicky complaints in a movie this good. ****

5 out of 5 stars a really really good view.......2007-03-12

Based on the strange and very interesting book of "ugly roomers" (of the same name as the film), this doesn't have all the funny hell raising laughs brought by the book, but the tone and the flavor are there.

There's no other film like this, and it's hard to put forth reasons why it's so good. It often approaches humiliation, often angry, often stupid, often...stirred with a chainsaw...blended into an integrated whole.

An overlooked masterpiece. No other way to describe it. The paperback it was based on often fetches big bucks, and that's worth a reading or three.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky Aussie movie...........2005-10-15

Quite an enjoyable little quirky Aussie movie. Strictly for those who enjoy arthouse/indi films though. For those who have ever shared houses, you will probably relate to some of this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Bizarre at times, but er ah..........2005-09-07

Quirky film - interesting spin on shared housing and personal hells.

3 out of 5 stars "She's not adverse to the occasional fish finger.".......2005-02-14

Australian film "He Died With a Felafel in His Hand" is based on the cult novel by John Birmingham. The film follows unemployed Danny (Noah Taylor) through three (of 49) shared-housing situations in the Australian cities of Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, and each episode illustrates the problems endured with roommates. In the Brisbane house, for example, a motley group of young people cohabits in squalor, and even adding numerous roommates still does not mean that the rent is paid. One roommate is permanently parked in front of the television set, and he controls the remote. Another roommate lives in a small tent in the front room, and for his privilege, he pays half the usual rent. When Pagan, Anya (Romane Bohringer) moves in, and begins practicing rituals in the front garden, skinheads descend on the home, and mayhem ensues.

Packed with quirky characters, and scenes of domestic destruction, parts of the film are blisteringly funny. Danny's story about Muriel, and the scene at the unemployment office were great. Unfortunately, bizarre moments are carried to extremes (the Pagan rituals for example), and then the film slides into absurdity and silliness. Throughout the film's insanity, Danny is an almost emotionless witness, absorbing it all, and surviving it too. In the final evaluation, the film is too chaotic to really carry an effective message other than it's horrible to live with other people--displacedhuman

LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), Italian (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Subtitles), Italian (Subtitles), ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SYNOPSIS: Danny (Noah Taylor) is a young man seemingly used to chaos, but he soon discovers that the fates are more than capable of dishing out more than he can handle in this offbeat Australian comedy. By his own count, thirtyish Danny has found himself sharing living quarters with one or more friends more than four dozen times in the past; one might imagine this would make him immune to roommate problems, but that soon proves not to be the case. While sharing a house in Brisbane with a handful of sloppy guys -- and one woman, Sam (Emily Hamilton), who ought to know better -- Danny finds himself obsessing over his most recent relationship, which crashed and burned six months before. The arrival of Anya (Romane Bohringer) picks up Danny's spirits, until he discovers she's dating Sam; this sets off his impulsive instincts, and too much spending (and too much damage to his rented house) forces Danny to high-tail it to Melbourne. Sam soon follows, smarting from a break-up with Anya, and she ends up sharing a flat with Danny. Danny's money management skills have not improved a bit, and he is soon on the run to Sydney, where he and Sam find themselves crashing with Nina (Sophie Lee), an actress with an eating disorder, and her gay friend Dirk (Francis McMahon). Just as Danny and Sam seem to be getting settled, Anya arrives, looking to reconcile with Sam; things get complicated for Danny, and he ends up moving in with Flip (Brett Stewart), an old friend with a severe drug problem. He Died With A Felafel In His Hand was adapted from the popular novel by Australian author John Birmingham. SPECIAL FEATURES: Trailer(s), Music Video, Interactive Menu, Cast/Crew Interview(s),
