Show biz wasn't enough. Andy Kaufman's true dream was to be a wrestler: a star, a pro wrestler. However, he had his obstacles. He was too small, too weak, and had no talent at the sport. To make up for these inadequacies Kaufman decided the only way he could be a champion in the ring was to start wrestling women. One night, in the midst of a heated battle, the great champion Jerry "The King" Lawler stepped into the ring to defend a woman's honor when it seemed that Kaufman might go too far. This incident began an obsessive, yearlong vendetta against the mighty Lawler, leaving Kaufman's friends to wonder, "Has Andy truly lost his mind?"

Andy Kaufman: I'm from Hollywood documents Kaufman's entire, but short, pro-wrestling career. Interlaced with live wrestling footage are interview snippets from Robin Williams, Marilu Henner, Tony Danza, and Bob Zmuda analyzing his actions and questioning his sanity. A huge perk of the video are the crowd shots in Memphis during this yearlong rivalry. In this giant comedic act, Kaufman willingly manages to stir up crowds of tens of thousands to a frenzied anger of hatred and bloodlust, all directed at him. But on whom is the joke? The sport of wrestling? The crowd? American sports entertainment as a whole? The home viewers? Sometimes it is hard to tell. One thing's for certain: in today's world of wrestling no one could pull off what Kaufman did in his day. It is truly amazing. --Rob Bracco

5 out of 5 stars The Best Wrestler Ever? The end of an era..........2007-02-04

As another reviewer points out, I never buy DVD's unless they're a keeper. This one is. Andy Kaufman participated in arguably the best show business hoax/performance art piece of all time. All hype? Yes sir. Stupid? No way. Looking back, Andy was the last guy that could get away with this stuff in the ring. Now it is show business. BACK THEN, THESE PEOPLE AT THE MID-SOUTH COLISEUM THOUGHT KAUFMAN AND WRESTLING WERE REAL. The end of an era indeed. The only bummer is that the whole Kaufman story couldn't be put out in it's entirerty for people crazy as me to buy it. "Breakfast with Blassie" is also amazing, in that Kaufman gets Classy into his world without the self proclaimed "king of men" knowing what's up. Another gem from the best comedic mind around, living, passed-on or not. Pure genious and hilarious. If you like your comedy spoon-fed, don't bother...

5 out of 5 stars AAA+++ - THE "PROOF" IS THAT THERE HASN'T BEEN ANOTHER - SINCE OR BEFORE ANDY!!! - HIGLY RECOMMEND!!!.......2006-09-19

If you are a fan of Andy Kaufman, the TV Show "Taxi", today's Wrestling Shows, the movie "Man on the Moon", or even Live Television "Spoofs", there is no ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT that you will fully and completely enjoy, and be entertainained by this DVD. I have to say that, I fully believe that Wrestling WOULD NOT EXIST on Television today (even cable), had it not been for Andy Kaufman and Jerry Lawler working together - and the beauty of all of it, is that in typical Andy Kaufman fashion, it all seemed so real and believable, at the time, that NOBODY knew the difference!!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!! - And just an FYI, I have a personal rule, that I DO NOT buy DVD's unless they are REALLY, REALLY GOOD, that buying them is justified - and this one DEFINITELY IS!! R.I.P. Andy - We really miss you!

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not comedy as you know it.......2005-06-28

Interesting, but more as a portrait of a performance artist than a comedy. Best for the kaufman completists.

5 out of 5 stars hilarious.......2005-05-25

this is a hilarious dvd, the movies are a hoot...you have to enjoy the Taxi days of Andy Kaufmans humor and the rest of his dilusional behavior to understand his great command of comedy, this is a great addition to my movie collection.

5 out of 5 stars These Two Films are a Blast!.......2005-03-26

Although "I'm from Hollywood" gets top billing, this DVD is actually made up of two movies: "I'm from Hollywood," which chronicles Kaufman's pro-wrestling career (a career which saw him defeat numerous women and ended when, for the for the first time, he fought someone of his own gender); and "My Breakfast with Blassie," a hilarious spoof of the movie "My Dinner with Andre."

"I'm from Hollywood" is a collage of scenes of Andy Kaufman's involvement in pro-wrestling, taken from television. Kaufman plays a "bad guy" wrestler who taunts the viewing audience about how he is a famous Hollywood star who can beat up any woman who dares challenge him in the ring. He goes to redneck country and insults the viewers, telling them that he is going to teach them about new things, like soap. After he finally meets a male (Jerry Lawlor) in the ring, he ends up in traction.

"My Breakfast with Blassie" is a parody of "My Dinner with Andre," a film that consisted almost entirely of two people having an intellectually stimulating conversation during dinner at an upscale restaurant on Manhattan's Upper West Side. So here, Kaufman made a film about former wrestler/wrestling manager Freddie Blassie and himself having an anti-intellectual conversation during breakfast at a downscale Los Angeles pancake house. We see Kaufman and Blassie conversing about how they don't like shaking peoples' hands because "you never know where their hands could've been - They could have just wiped themselves and their finger could have gone through the toilet paper." In another scene, Blassie rubs the pregnant Thai waitress' belly for good luck, and then, after she walks away, comments, "That's another one we'll be feeding on welfare."

These two films are highly recommended. They're a real gas!

Hollywood Rhythm: The Best of Jazz & Blues (Vol. 1) is a time capsule from another era, stuffed with tuneful artifacts. With the coming of sound to film, the excitement of hearing recorded music at the movies prompted these shorts, which date from 1929 to 1941. This collection, mostly from the Paramount vaults, begins with the 1932 "Rhapsody in Black and Blue," starring Louis Armstrong (a rather notorious film discussed in Ken Burns's Jazz). Racial stereotyping is rampant in some of these pieces, and this one has Armstrong dressed in leopard skins while playing trumpet in heaven. Absurd, yet Armstrong's performance is over-the-moon exhilarating. Three shorts respectfully showcase the composing genius of Duke Ellington, including 1935's "Symphony in Black," featuring a vocal spot for Billie Holiday.

Hoagy Carmichael is spotlighted in a 1939 short, Fats Waller sings his classic "Ain't Misbehavin'," and the awesome Bessie Smith stars in a very creaky 1929 mini-melodrama, "St. Louis Blues," built around her song. Many of the films create a flimsy story to wrap around the music. In "Cab Calloway's Hi-De-Ho," the irrepressible Mr. Calloway receives a telegram while en route to an engagement at the Cotton Club, and he must improvise a new tune in the sleeping car of his train. A few of the films present scenes at the Cotton Club (complete with saucy dance numbers), and many evoke Harlem as the magical center of black America. The DVD bonus is "Jazz a la Cuba," featuring Don Aspiazu--"The Foremost Exponent of the Rhumba," if you didn't know. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Have.......2003-09-02

Just read the names of the folks in this dvd. That alone got me this dvd. I don't know about everyone else, but my image of Louis Armstrong has been an older man, sort of laid back. I've heard alot of his recordings from his earlier years, but never had much of image to fix to him in his younger years. He's still the allmighty "Satchmo", full of youth and going wild. His stance while playing is like he's telling the world... "Yes.... indeed I am the allmighty Satchmo". The dude is awsome. And Cab Callaway.... the boy goes wild with his hair flying and singing. I've never seen him in any films, except the Blues Brothers. Again it's good to see him as well as "Satchmo" in their youthful wild and rowdy days.I could go on and on. This DVD has (as far as I know) the only performance ever filmed of Bessie Smith-St. Louis Blues. And what a performance! The vehicle is a he-done-her-wrong type melodrama but opera isn't known for its original stories. And, believe me, this is blues opera, with a chorus! I read somewhere that James C. Johnson, the jazz-blues pianist-composer(of the Charleston) was responsible for the arrangement here. Very different from the record version on her Complete Recordings. She really pulls out all the stops here! What a powerful performance! Unfortunately the sound is definitely not hifi. But what would Bessie have produced had she lived!

The other performances are mostly notable. Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, and an unknown at the time, Billie Holiday.

One warning! The racial stereotyping in some areas of the DVD is enough to make you take a second breath. The greatness of the performances and the chance to see these performers is what makes this DVD great.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but could have been more complete.......2001-03-08

This stuff is great for anyone who likes jazz and/or pop music of the '30s and '40s, and perhaps for early film buffs as well. It's pure show business history, and fascinating to see what these performers, some of whom you might only know from old 78 records, actually looked like in their heyday.

However, those who own the original laserdisc box set of this collection should be aware that its contents is spread over this DVD and its companion, "Hollywood Rhythm Vol. 02 - The Best of Big Bands & Swing." The problem is, 21 shorts from the laserdisc set didn't make it to these DVDs, so they are not really a replacement for the laserdiscs. Unless the missing titles make it to a third DVD, it's necessary for the decicated collector to hold on to that laserdisc set. Considering the huge storage capacity of DVDs, it seems like they could have combined the entire original collection into one release, with double-sided or dual-layer DVDs to hold it all. Their incompleteness is the only reason I don't give it 5 stars, but for those who won't miss the missing titles, this is still a fascinating collection of old musical shorts.

4 out of 5 stars Classic but no longer controversial.......2001-10-18

At the time this was produced in Great Britain, this material was considered very controversial. Some American TV stations refused to run this special because it confirmed that MM had affairs with both President Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy. Now this news is old hat so it doesn't have the same power it once did. After this special, 20/20 did another report that added to the story. The 20/20 report was canned and Geraldo Rivera was fired for protesting the censorship of the 20/20 report. Today viewing this DVD reveals many flaws, such as the dark lighting of the interviews and the confusing way the material is presented. Still, if you want to purchase this DVD before it goes out of print and becomes a collector's item, this would be the time.

2 out of 5 stars A Featureless Review of Marilyn's Last Days.......2000-07-18

This documentary covers Marilyn Monroe's last days and focuses on her links to John and Bobby Kennedy. Unfortunately, with just one exception, the players in this story (particularly the narration) appear to be bored with the whole affair. The lighting is too dark and the music sounds like it came from a 1960's stag film. For the MM cognoscenti, very little new information is presented. The highlight of the film is the riveting testimony of Deborah Gould, who was the ex-wife of Peter Lawford. Even though she was probably just 10 years old in the early 1960's when all of this took place, she is as stunning as she is believable.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, informative.......2000-04-25

Though I believe Marilyn Monroe committed suicide, I found this video (which captures Marilyn's last days) very informative: it stands as a testament to how powerful men can take advantage of women (as JFK and RFK seem to have done with Marilyn). Sometimes angering, sometimes depressing, this video is essential to understanding the downfall of an American icon. Those critical to the premise that Marilyn had affairs with both Robert and John Kennedy will find it hard to deny the affairs in the face of the plentiful interviews and evidence in this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Pass on this one!.......2000-03-22

This tape has actually very little footage of Marilyn, the rest is just more of the same old, tired murder conspiracy. I think this tape confuses things more than it clears up. People have to realize that a lot of money is being made writing books and stuff about all these different theories, very little can actually be backed up with facts. It is truly a shame. Don't bother with this one

    Description

A boxing match at the Hollywood Stadium turns into a gripping murder mystery with over 2,000 suspects! As top contender Ace Cummings prepares to take on Madison, the reigning champ, Madison, the house lights dim. Suddenly, a scream echoes through the venue and a peculiar odor fills the air. When the lights come up, Ace is found dead. After witnessing the bizarre event, sassy and beautiful young writer Polly Ward decides to investigate, teaming up with dapper district attorney Bill Devons. Their long list of suspects includes a candy-seller, a gambler, a movie star, two of the victim's girlfriends and the boxer Madison. Clues are scarce, but the sleuths work every angle. As Polly and Bill draw closer to discovering the killer, their lives are threatened and the danger becomes frighteningly real. Rife with snappy dialogue, brisk pacing, and sharp performances, The Hollywood Stadium Mystery (a.k.a. The Stadium Murders) is a tightly-executed whodunit and a fine example of what smaller studios were capable of during Hollywood's golden era. The opening credit sequence is particularly inventive with its clever use of newspaper headlines to kick off the action. Director David Howard handles the mystery genre with panache, despite a career that centered mostly on adventures and western films like Six-Gun Gold, Painted Desert and Daniel Boone. Neil Hamilton later gained fame as white-haired Commissioner Gordon in the 1966 TV-series "Batman." The ringside radio commentator in The Hollywood Stadium Mystery was Jimmy Wallington, a real-life announcer whose voice was heard on such programs as "The Life Of Riley" and "Stranger Than Fiction."

5 out of 5 stars Wicked film, must own!!! .......2006-08-25

I saw this film when i was 15, and wow it is well played, great story line, just got the DVD a couple of weeks ago. The dude from home alone is awsome, why cant they make films like this today!!

    5 out of 5 stars Cool Stuff.......2005-09-06

This movie was awesome. I loved it. I saw it at around one o' clock this morning and I'm buying it off of Amazon now. It was creative and clever with a Tarantino-type of nonsensical flow. The way everyone talked...it was great. The jokes were funny and the people were real in their own weird way. The characters were all unique and lovable and it was nice how amiable most of the people were. No one really got mad at each other. Anyway, if you haven't seen this movie, you should, and if you have, you should see it again. It's awesome.

    4 out of 5 stars "press" & " public" &" over zealous" police &one good actor.......2005-06-04

6/04/05 Comcast Cable 's HBO Channel's repay of this movie was a true "due" for all the replays of bad movies that they rerun.."Jimmy Hollywood" starring Joe Pesci,Christian Slater and Victoria Arril had something few movies have "No anti-climax"..As he(Jooe Pesci) repeats his rehearsal lines before facing the hyped police outside the California Egyptian Theatre, who are looking forward with "press /media prompting" to confront "Jerico"of the SOS membership a/k/a Jimmy Alto(the actor),who never got the break of a Brando or Cagney.. vs attending to "crime in the streets" etc. he keeps repeating the Lines "What You Going to Kill Me, Everybody dies"... In this time before the confrontation due to portable TV, he sees "fans" like he would want for the 1st time .Fortunately his friends played by actor Christian Slater(who had to delay his fugitive run from the city to keep his appointment for the 17th of the month "MRI")leaves the California Egyptian theatre, and his girlfriend Lorraine (played by Victoria Avril) lets the police know that "the actor Jimmy Alto" gun contained only blank..Thus 150 police don't shot at him as he leaves the Egyptian theatre. The movie's ending is the "stuff that kept the movie industry surviving strongly for so long".

3 out of 5 stars Is he still acting?.......2004-11-06

An aluminum siding salesman Jimmy Alto (Joe Pesci) moves to Hollywood to become an actor. He even rents an ad on a bench. He even comes close a few times to getting a part.

The one time he leaves his radio in his car it is misappropriated leaving a broken window in the process. Jimmy upset decides to film the perpetrator in the act. He enlists the help of his forgetful buddy William (Christian Slater). His successes with the operation and the 56 second spot on the news, makes him realize that this is "Acting". His friend signed a note to the police with the initials SOS, thus starting the invention of an organization called "Save Our Streets.

Every thing starts to snowball from here. The police thing they are up against another SLA. The people think it is another Charles Bronson. William does not think. Jimmy thinks he is acting. And Jimmy's on and off girl Lorraine (Victoria Abril) thinks he is for real ad does not know it.

    What do you think?

3 out of 5 stars A Levinson film awaiting rediscovery and re-evaluation........2004-08-23

Barry Levinson's comedy/drama about an actor-turned-Hollywood crimefighter (Joe Pesci), his skeptical lover (Victoria Abril in a rare English-language performance)and his addled but adoring young friend (Christian Slater) was a fast flop in the spring of 1994-perhaps due to the public's lack of interest in seeing a film about a "loser" eager for a chance to become a "legendary" star like Errol Flynn and live the glittering Hollywood lifestyle (with a home in fashionable West L.A.) and his frustration over that lifestyle remaining forever beyond his reach. In the 10 years since JIMMY HOLLYWOOD's release, the advent of both the Internet and the glut of reality television series make Levinson's tale of an ordinary man thrust into a sort of fast-food version of stardom more relevant than ever.

I was Pesci's stand-in on the film, so my opinion isn't completely objective. But I do believe that Barry Levinson is noteworthy for treating audiences with intelligence and respect. And I believe that JIMMY HOLLYWOOD, underrated and largely unseen over the past nine years, deserves to be rediscovered and re-evaluated on its DVD release.

I'm presuming that this is a bare bones DVD. But some interesting outtakes should exist somewhere-including a scene of Pesci and Slater singing a Leonard Cohen song called "Democracy".

5 out of 5 stars Sexy fun gay fluff!.......2006-02-20

Forget the one star rating--what were they expecting: Hamlet? West
Hollywood Stories is entertaining fluff, to be sure, but it's
entertaining GAY fluff, and sadly you won't find any of these stories
on your daytime soaps. The writing/the acting/the camera work--no worse
than you'd find on Days of Our Lives, which is to say it's not
brilliant, but I didn't find a single "bad" performance, and some of
the actors are actually pretty good, and pretty good looking, and a
pretty face can excuse quite a lot. More than anything, West Hollywood
Stories is a tantalizing peek at what might be if prime time, or even
daytime, paid more attention to the 10% focused on in this "what if"
soap. Too bad that only four episodes were made. I'd like to have seen
    more of these stories

I do not live in the sunshine state, but, if this movie is any idea of what life is like in West Hollywood, I'd rather live under the HOLLYWOOD sign! What a piece of tripe! The story stinks (what was it about again?) and the acting is just plain lousy!!! DO NOT spend your hard earned money on this or the West Hollywood Stories 2 movie. Spend it on a classic like "Sunset Blvd." or "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" or, if you're hungry to see hot men, go to the baths.

What you get here is a stunning directorial debut by an upcoming indie film director. The sparse script and environments in the film create a captivating look into the lives of those on the other side of the tracks. Elegantly caputuring the conflicted lives of two struggling twenty-somethings in love, East Of Sunset is more like a poem than a film. Highly reccomended as a field guide to anyone living (or contemplating) living the "artists life" in places like Los Angeles or New York. Props for the real grit of the "glamorized" drug life often romanticized in lessor tales.

All this and according to the filmmakers commentary on the DVD, the movie was made for under $50k, and in less than two weeks... Stunning Achievement!

I was very excited to find out that the DVD release contains a bonis full length CD with 18 of the Tom Waits songs from the movie performed by cool comtemporaty artists! Thats closed the deal for me! Tom Waits fans will enjoy this!

2 out of 5 stars not good, but not too bad either.......2004-05-23

If I'd had a chance to rent this DVD first, I definately wouldn't have bought it. It's a trashy story (part 1+2), the acting is very bad, but there are some parts that are worth watching. If you are into independent movies, this movie could be some fun , but try to rent it, do not buy it. It's a waste of money.

        Product Description

Classic Stars of Hollywood - Three Distinct Documentaries that tell part of the Story Cary Grant At the age of 14, Grant forged his father's signature of approval, and 'joined the circus'. In 1920, he was one of eight 'Pender Boys' leaving England to travel to Broadway and perform in "Good Times". In 1932 he made his Hollywood debut in "This is the Night" a charming, sophisticated comedy of a type that would make him a top star. Still in his early twenties, Mae West wanted Grant for "She Done Him Wrong" because he combined virility with the aura and bearing of a gentleman. By the 50's and 60's Grant had invented 'a man of the world' persona and style... 'high comedy with polished words'. Working with Grace Kelly in "To Catch a Thief" in 1955, the Grant style reached its pinnacle. "An Affair to Remember", 1957, has been regarded as one of the greatest love stories ever made. Humphrey Bogart Ranked #1 on The American Film Institute's list of the greatest screen actors, Bogart was the son of a Manhattan surgeon and a magazine illustrator. He got his start in New York working as a stage manager. Bit parts followed and an early contract with Fox showed promise, but went nowhere. A few years later and back on Broadway, he performed in "Petrified Forest" with Leslie Howard. The play was a hit and Bogart once again traveled to Hollywood to star in the film version. From there his career took off. His characterizations as a tough guy-gangster type made him a super star. In 1941 he made two break-through films: 'High Sierra" and "The Maltese Falcon" (In roles which were both turned down by George Raft). "Casablanca" made in 1942 guaranteed his superstardom. In 1947 he and his wife Lauren Bacall went to Washington to protest the Communist witch-hunts generated by Senator McCarthy.
