The African Queen meets Swept Away in this sometimes labored romantic comedy by director Ivan Reitman. Fortunately, he cast an old pro in Harrison Ford, as Quinn Harris, a South Seas charter pilot who must ferry New York fashion editor Robin Monroe (Anne Heche) from one island to another--a hop that falls flat when they fly into a mammoth storm that causes them to crash on a deserted island. The pair resent and resist each other, until they are forced to team up to escape from the island--and some modern pirates who want their heads. If that part of the story is unconvincing, you can always focus on the smoldering comic chemistry between Heche, who displays strong comic instincts, and the ever-reliable Ford. The script is just an excuse for these two flinty characters to strike increasingly romantic sparks off each other, which is always enjoyable to watch. --Marshall Fine

Description

Big-screen favorite Harrison Ford stars in this nonstop adventure hit about a dream vacation that turns into a hilarious tropical nightmare! A gruff, rough-hewn cargo pilot living in the islands, Quinn Harris (Ford) hates tourists ... though he's not above making a fast buck from a sharp-tongued New Yorker, Robin Monroe (sexy Anne Heche -- VOLCANO, WAG THE DOG), when she's desperate for a quick flight to Tahiti! But this already uneasy relationship suddenly takes a nosedive when his weather-beaten old plane is forced down in a storm! Now, stranded together on a deserted isle, Quinn and Robin quickly discover all the perils of paradise. As this mismatched pair find themselves facing danger at every turn, you're sure to find their misfortunes fueling one of Hollywood's most entertaining action-comedy hits in years!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-01

Movie arrived in great time from seller. I was very happy! We love this movie and recommend it to anyone looking for some good entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Light-hearted adventurous romantic comedy........2007-02-14

This is a well-cast movie. The actors and actresses work well together; they were perfect; there were no weak points.

This movie is so much fun to watch, that I'm surprised not to find Harrison Ford and Anne Heche playing in other movies together. The chemistry they emit is refreshing. Anne Heche seems to have an innate ability for her timing with humor. She's good, very good. The viewer can't help but be roped into the action segments. You are there.

Also, it was wonderful to watch the athletic prowess that Harrison and Anne showed at work, play, and in the adventurous portions of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars six days and seven nightd.......2007-01-18

one of the last good comidies that isnt outragously stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Six Days, Seven Nights.......2007-01-10

I really loved the movie because how Harrison Ford and Anne Heche played so well together. David Schwimmer was very comical also. It had humor, action and adventure. It would be a very good buy to add to your movie collection.

4 out of 5 stars My Theory.......2007-01-05

I have this theory about movies that you see on an airplane. I don't know if its due to the boredom or a lack of oxygen, but sometimes when you see a movie, while on a long flight, that might otherwise leave you cold, you find yourself being charmed. So it was with Six Days, Seven Nights. And the great thing about it is that it never wears off! I can still watch this movie and, even though I KNOW its not very good, I really enjoy it. So, I don't know, maybe if you breath into a bag the first time you play it you'll get the same sensation. Its worth a try.
(By the way, shouldn't it be Seven Days, Six Nights? I mean, come on, what travel agent doesn't count the day you arrive and the day you depart?)

In Wong Kar Wai's quasi-sequel to In the Mood for Love, 2046 is a hotel room, a futuristic story, and a state of mind. Tony Leung returns as Chow, but perhaps not the same Chow who appeared in the first film. Starting three years later in 1966, we see Chow on various Christmases as he lives, loves, and writes in a hotel and nearby restaurants. Although he is less sensitive and more of a ladies man now, Chow's love life always seems to exceed his grasp. Whether the character is the same (the director calls this an "echo" of the first movie) might be trivial. Hong Kong filmmaker Wai is such a visualist (Time magazine tabbed him as the "world's most romantic filmmaker"), the images wash over with swirling smoke, neon lights, and the faces of his outstanding cast, all lovingly photographed and smoothly scored. There's a lot more going on than the visuals, and Wai's fans will certainly find more and more details on repeated viewings. We travel into Chow's futuristic story, where the acquaintances become fictional characters traveling to a place where "everyone goes" to recapture lost memories. Often Chow talks about never seeing a lover ever again, but eventually bumps into her. The final result is a film some will cherish; others will long for the more traditional storyline of the first film. Wai certainly finds a new direction for actress Ziyi Zhang (House of Flying Daggers) as a prostitute who becomes one of Chow's many lovers. And Leung continues to be one of the world's great film actors, with a face and acting style the camera just loves. --Doug Thomas

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful, ultra-hip, dull, sluggish, near pointless........2007-07-03

I don't know if this guy is interested in making what you and I consider to be movies. There is almost no story -- nothing to keep the action moving...yet we are supposed to be captivated by these predominantly lifeless characters. Try to remember one line of dialogue from this film other than something cliched.

Wong Kar Wai is in love with fancy cinematography, wristwatches, vintage electronics, dolled-up women and swooning music. Like so many other heralded filmakers nowadays he is all style with very little meat. I do think there was an interesting subplot contrasting Japanese and Chinese melancholic love but I think that was me more reading into it than anything much said in the film. For the man who sits behind a Final Cut Pro studio all day this must seem like an absolute masterpiece though.

2 out of 5 stars Lush. Gorgeous. Interminable........2007-06-24

The idea that another viewer might spend more than two non-returnable hours watching this well-acted, beautiful and pretentious film was enough for me to overcome my reluctance to comment on it.

Two brief points:

1.) This film was shot without a script. This will not come as a surprise to anyone who has seen it.

2.) In the DVD extras, actress Ziyi Zhang (who plays Bai Ling) confesses with a nervous laugh, "None of us knew what the film was about."

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-06-09

a smoothly sultry film. mildly sexy, but i don't think eroticly so. simply a pleasure to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me about the first time.......2007-06-07

Beautiful movie to look at. I remember a scene where a girl asks the main character why things can't go back the way they were. And he walks away smiling....not laughing at her or anything, but a smile born from pain and understanding how fleeting love can be.

1 out of 5 stars You have GOT to be kidding ..........2007-05-17

Why is it the greatest part of many films are the previews. If this director and screenwriter woiuld have spent as much time on the move as they did on the preview this may have been an interesting film.

Unless I guess you keep a bong very nearby while watching this film I will guarantee that the viewer will have absolutely NO idea as to what is going on at any one point in time. The film most certainly is very Oriental with the dark and brooding images, the compulsory 'player type' bad boy and of course we need the chain smoking super sexy bright lipstick female lead.

To say that I was disappointed with the lack of substance would be an understatement!

Kung Fu expert Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a martial arts master who arrives in Hong Kong to compete in the Kumite, a violent championship fighting contest.
Running Time: 92 min.

Format: DVD MOVIE

Amazon.com

A well-oiled Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in what may be one of the few kickboxing films to be based on a true story. The Muscles from Brussels plays Frank Dux, the first Westerner ever to win the extreme "whupfest" known as the Kumatai (a long-running, no-holds-barred fighting tournament in Hong Kong). While a bit deficient in the script department (to say the least), this undeniably exciting flick succeeds by letting Van Damme play to his strengths: namely, minimal acting and a lot of impossibly acrobatic splits while kicking people in the head. A guilty-pleasure testosterone blast of the highest order, with a memorable villain (the massive Bolo Yeung from Enter the Dragon), and a multitude of well-choreographed fight scenes. An embarrassed-looking Forest Whitaker cameos as a hapless (and non-kickboxing) cop. --Andrew Wright

This movie is what it's all about, off course, bruce lee was widely known. But this one is trully magnificent... the story is based on a true-story, the movements are very very athletic and beautifull... to make it short...

THIS MOVIE HAS IT ALL !!!

This movie let's you see what it really is... ART !!!

5 out of 5 stars Bloodsport is my favorite Van Damme movie.......2006-12-07

In the movie Bloodsport, Jean-Claude Van Damme and the other actors do a fantastic job playing their roles. Van Damme became a big celebrity after starring in this film. It's inspiring to see him train and fight. It amazes me on how he's super flexible and is in great condition. The statement Frank's shedoshi said, "It brings mind, body, and spirit together" is the truth. It makes me think to myself, "You can do anything if you put your mind to it."

4 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2006-08-28

One VanDamme's earlier and better movies, good action and storyline. The fighting styles from all over the world are awesome just to know the different techniques that different martial artists' use.

5 out of 5 stars "very good...but brick not hit back".......2006-08-19

The sucess and popularity of Bloodsport makes this movie one of Van Damme's very best ever. Bloodsport also marks Van Damme's first role as the main character in a movie. (The previous film he had a role in was "No Retreat No Surrender" in which he played the villain but had a much smaller role). Bloodsport went on to make 3 more sequals, however without Van Damme. This first installment is overall the best, "a true classic", althouh I find certain elements are more appealing in some of the sequals.

The story in Bloodsport is fairly original for its time and the acting is not too bad, even though half the people in this movie seem to barely speak English well (Van Damme included). Now when I say not too bad, I'm coming from the fact that I'm pretty hardcore about cheesy martial art movies - most have baaaaaaaaad acting. The great thing about the story is that it is based on the true events of Frank Dux (played by Van Damme), who was the first Westerner to ever win the kumite and to hold several records. The soudtrack to this movie, I hate to admit for an 80's film, is very nice. I enjoy both the original music composed by Paul Hertzog, and some of the songs, by Survivor I think (same group who performed Eye of the Tiger in Rocky III). I even enojyed the opening credits scene - it sets the tone for the movie wonderfully.

The real meat and potatoes of Bloodsport, of course is the tournament. There are plenty of fights, many very short, and some that don't look very realistic. Not many fancy moves, but its always a treat to see Bolo Yeung as the villain, "Chong Li", on the platform. The final fight between Dux and Chong Li lasts about 7 minutes, but a lot of it is in slow motion with some of those "now somewhat cheesy flashbacks" to early training scenes. The end of the fight showcases Van Damme's leaping spinning split kicks that quickly became his signature move and can be seen in more of his following films including Kickboxer and Double Impact. If you wanna see another fight between Van Damme and Bolo Yeung, be sure to check out Double Impact.

William Hurt is perfectly cast as an arrogant surgeon who treats patients like interchangeable cogs in the machinery of his medical practice. Then he is diagnosed with throat cancer and, as the title of the memoir on which it is based tells us, he gets a taste of his own medicine. The subplot involves the solidarity between doctors, which is shattered when the newly conscious physician discovers that one of his partners (Mandy Patinkin) is trying to cover up a case of malpractice. Hurt is solid, as is Wendy Crewson as the doctor who treats him and Elizabeth Perkins as a fellow cancer patient. Interestingly, Hurt's fellow actors Patinkin, Adam Arkin, and Christine Lahti all wound up playing doctors on TV's Chicago Hope. --Marshall Fine

Description

Reunited for the first time since their Academy Award(R)-nominated CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, screen favorite William Hurt and director Randa Haines team up for another successful collaboration in THE DOCTOR. Oscar(R)-winning Hurt (Best Actor, 1986 -- KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN) joins Christine Lahti (RUNNING ON EMPTY), Mandy Patinkin (THE PRINCESS BRIDE), and Elizabeth Perkins (BIG) in the hit release that's been hailed as one of the must-see films of the year. It's the uplifting story of a man who becomes an extraordinary surgeon, as well as an extraordinary person, once he experiences firsthand what it's like being an ordinary patient. Touching hearts of critics and audiences alike, THE DOCTOR promises to entertain and inspire you from beginning to end.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars William Hurt is great.......2007-07-03

Simple plot concept -- successful, busy surgeon with uncompassionate bedside manner toward his patients -- develops cancer in his own throat. He now must go through the health care meat grinder as merely another patient. He must deal with his illness, family, colleagues, co-cancer patients, student interns, etc. The possibilities regarding human interaction and interpersonal dynamics in this situation are obviously limitless.

A high end cast and set. William Hurt carries the day with a wonderful performance as said surgeon. I was impressed also by supporting actors Mandy Patinkin and the understated great talent of Adam Arkin. I was a little less impressed by female players Elizabeth Perkins and Christine Lahti who I thought were both a little over the top (or maybe that's just me and women). The San Francisco backdrop is beautiful, as always. Well written and directed as well.

I would share an observation that caused me to ponder a bit ---- Perhaps I'm just a simple Midwesterner living here in flyover country, and thus disconnected with the "real world" in Hollywood --- but in the circles I travel in, life-threatening illness always involves appeal to the attention, mercy and resources of God (the "Great Physician" if you will). That aspect was absent in this film. Except for one ambiguous "thank God" utterance, the divine help was not mentioned or alluded to. One would think that SOMEBODY in the film would have at least a modicum of religious conviction.

Entertaining and well done. Runs a little over 2 hours. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The lack of BESIDE MANNER and EMPATHY in the medical field........2007-06-16

It is often said "Until it personally effects you, you will generally be apathetic."

THE DOCTOR is a magnificent true film of one Doctor who learns that true empathy and caring could only be learned when he himself falls victim to disease and the apathy and lack of empathy that he experiences from the medical community. This is an important film and needs to be taken very seriously.Viewed along with the riveting film WIT that explores the same subject, you will think twice about not only the possible shortfalls that you have experienced at the hands of medical professionals, but more importantly how you treat others who are in dire straits. This film makes us examine our own callous attitudes no matter what profession we are in.

Though this not always the rule, for what it is worth, my sister just completed cancer surgery at the #1 Hospital in this country. The surgery was a complete success, but the lack of care and concern had her in absolute fear, tears and anger. Oh yes, there are non-caring health professional, and there are those who go the extra mile. THE DOCTOR examines the former with great success!

William Hurt IS the perfect choice for this role. The script, acting and pace is perfection!

Another "caring" film about the medical profession would be BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS from 1990.

5 out of 5 stars Medical wake up call.......2007-05-20

I have seen this film a number of times, not the last of which was for a class called "Whole Person Care." I was going to school to become a Physical Therapist and the class was intended to make us aware of our need to treat people as a whole and not as a disease process. Very effective and enlightening for this purpose and has always stayed with me as I see the folks in my care. I purchased this film to use for the same purpose at a Nursing Home in which I now work and intend to provide it to the entire staff as continueing education. I know it will be as effective for the nursing staff as it was for me. I can only thank the folks who made this film for a fine motion picture that does more than just entertain. The entire medical profession should use this in their education.

5 out of 5 stars Sadly, a very accurate story..........2007-04-24

Having been caught up in the medical 'merry-go-round' for the past 10 years, I could sure identify with the patients. Sadly, the movie and subject were very contemporary - with the exception of the cellphones. I say sadly because nothing much has changed within the medical profession in almost 20 years from the time this story was written. What a sad commentary on our medical/patient care.

On the movie/drama front - the casting is great, the acting even better, and a story I sure wish we'd all learn from!

4 out of 5 stars Seeing Through The Eyes Of The Patient.......2007-04-04

Thumbs up to this sensitive fact-based story of a doctor who learned all about compassion. William Hurt in one of his finest roles. Should be required viewing for all medical students, on the art of treating patients with dignity. One of those real feel good movies. Why are so many good films left for so long without a transfer to DVD?

    Product Description

In the tradition of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, Warriors of Heaven and Earth weaves a thread of battle, comradeship and honor. Set in the ferocious Gobi Desert, the story follows Lieutenant Li (Jiang Wen) and Japanese emissary Lai Xi (Nakai Kiichi), both first-class warriors and master swordsmen. Product Description

THE BLOSSOMING OF MAXIMO OLIVEROS tells the story of Maxi (Nathan Lopez) a gay, pre-teen growing up in the slums of Manila, who is deeply loyal to his family of petty thieves. His world revolves around his father and two brothers, who love and protect him in return for Maxi s devotion to completing domestic chores and covering their tracks when they commit crimes. When Maxi meets Victor (JR Valentin) a well-meaning, handsome policeman, the two become fast friends and Maxi begins to learn that he can have a better life, which soon incurs the ire and disapproval of Maxi s family. The digitally-shot feature made its U.S. debut at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and was the official Philippine entry of the 2007 Academy Awards® for Best Foreign Language film. The film has also garnered several film festival awards including the Teddy Award at the 2006 Berlinale Film Festival and Best Asian Film at the 2006 Rotterdam Film Festival.

    "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros"

    In the Slums

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Soon to be seen at the Arkansas LGBT Film Festival is "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros", a new film from the Philippines. Deep in drama and with plenty of laughs, it is a beautiful film. It is frank and honest and will probably change the way you look at poverty, at gay people, at the nature of families and love and at the love
of parent and child, sibling and sibling.
Is Maximo Oliveros gay? He dresses like a girl and has a crush on a good looking policeman. As we get deeper into the film, we question whether he is gay or just troubled.
When Maxi's mother dies due to an unknown illness, he takes over seeing to his two brothers ad his father--all of the petty thieves. Everything seems to be working just fine until a young cop appears. Maxi becomes enamored of him and must choose between his feelings for the cop and his family. As can be expected, things get both ugly and violent.
Director Aureus Solito and screenplay writer Michiko Yamamoto give us a beautiful coming of age story. Nathan Lopez as Maximo Oliveros is a wonderful young actor and the treatment of him is unique and interesting. Whether or not he is gay is not an issue in the movie. There are elements of camp but in fair amounts and everything in the movie works because it is so well done. The filmmakers know when to pull back ad never let anything get too sensitive or emotional. Melodrama is avoided.
What the film shows us is that an effeminate boy can exist in the slums and have a peaceful existence. Even with the tremendous influence of the Roman Catholic church, the general mood of the Philippines lies somewhere between tolerance, amusement and acceptance.
The homoeroticism of the film is handled with great sensitivity. There is more a sense of hero worship between Maxi and the cop than sexuality. The people exhibit true caring rather than homophobia and there is a sense of ambiguity in the sexuality of the film and in JR Valentin's portrayal of the cop. There are scenes between the two that are highly charged and one especially that could be interpreted as pedophilia were it not so beautifully handled. The ending satisfies in every way.
Are puppy love, unrequited love, familial obligations and economic pressures necessarily gay? I don't think they are.
The streets of Manila are intriguing as photographed here as are the tensions among the principal characters. Here is a marginal family that exhibits loving and tender feelings.
Again I must cite Nathan Lopez for his performance. He has created a memorable character that will break your heart. His sensitivity, warmth and humor are astounding.
The subtlety of the film does not have the usual histrionics found in most films like this. It is the rawness and harshness of the film that stays with you.

Since the late 1800s, the real-life Cantonese patriot Wong Fei-hung has evolved into an icon of Chinese pop culture, a sort of Asian Davy Crockett. He's been a central figure in Hong Kong cinema since the 1950s, most recently in Tsui Hark 's Once Upon a Time in China series. In this thrilling 1993 adventure directed by Yuen Woo-ping, we meet Wong as an earnest boy traveling with his upright pugilist father (Donnie Yen) and drawing inspiration from the activities of the benevolent masked bandit known as the Iron Monkey (Yu Rong-guang). The sheer physical prowess of the stars is often flabbergasting, and the action set pieces (especially an interlude atop a set of "Chinese poles") are staged for maximum dynamism. In effect, this is a powerful combination of the older, Baltic style of kung fu action and the newer body-slamming style pioneered by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. This is a perfect martial arts picture to screen for any genre skeptics in your midst. --David Chute

    5 out of 5 stars Iron Monkey..........2007-02-15

I love this DVD. When this movie debuted in American Theatres, I noticed that several scenes were left out (people here probably figured that they were too violent and probably would have garnered an 'R' rating - thus shutting out many potential patrons). Get this "Chinese" version and enjoy this action flick "uncut!" Five stars...

    5 out of 5 stars A great movie.......2006-11-02

Watching Iron Monkey was inspiring, out classing "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon". The fights scenes were more intense, the diversity of weapons used more varied, and the central theme more focused.

Dr Yang was the iron monkey and Miss Orchid his associate. The power of Iron Monkey is the virtue of his heroic efforts. The governor hates the iron monkey. The governor has managed to steal readily from the people by creating an artificial food scarcity. The community is powerless against the Warlord and the Shaolin monks have been paid for with a price and corruptible. The governor is a political pawn to a very powerful warlord skilled in the Buddha palm poison hand technique, who will fight the iron monkey and tiger Jade, lose, and burn to death.

The iron monkey captures the governor's money and distributes the money to the poor. Dr Yang remains free from suspicion as he treats community resident's sick with the plague.

The community protects the identity of the Iron Monkey. The Iron Monkey maintains peace and order in the community.

The governor learns the Royal Minister is coming to visit and wants to capture the Iron Monkey as a prestige boaster. Jade Tiger accidently engages the Iron Monkey in an brief hand-to-hand combat. Jade Tiger and his son are arrested and brought before the governor. The governor learns about Jade Tigers fight ability and forces Jade Tiger to find Iron Monkey, in seven days, holding his Wong Fei-Hong as ransom. Jade Tiger fight characteristic include umbrella jabs, hooks, and block and rapid foot and leg kicks. After the initial confrontation between Jade Tiger and Iron Monkey, Jade Tiger learns how much the community loves Iron Monkey, as he starves for two days without food.

Miss Orchid eventually offers Master Wong Kay-Ying (Jade Tiger) food and a friendship emerges. Jade Tigers son becomes sick and Dr Yang is summoned by the chief to help Jade Tiger's son, Wong Fei-Hong (Jackie Chan great Hero), who is sick with the plague. Dr Yang nurses the boy back to health and a bond between the families is ensured.

The Iron monkey becomes the force to fight against tyranny of the warlord and his servants: the dragon witch and the swordsman. Iron monkey is poison with the Buddha palm and Jade tiger learns his identity. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger, the Hun Gar, duet combined to defeat the warlord.

The movie has humorous scenes and lines that are more typical with Jackie Chan movies. The Iron Monkey impersonates the warlord and commands the governor too distribute food from the warehouse too the people and give him all his gold and silver. The governor receives 30 lashings and the Iron Monkey escapes.

The Iron monkey defeats the Dragon Witch with "A Steel ball" that pierces her sword and penetrates her right eye. Iron Monkey uses a steel chain to twist the swordmans sword into a ribbon and then kill him. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger fight the warlord on poles suspend twenty feet above ground with heat fuel burning below on the ground.

The martial arts scenes are fantastic. Raymond Chow is probably one of the Best coordinator of fighting scenes in the World. The flying stunts are more innovative than Crouching Tiger and Hidden dragon and the hand-to-hand combat more complex combining numerous techniques of five animal style and shadow kicking by Jade Tiger. The MA form highlight was a Staff form performed by Dr Yang, classic Shaolin kicks, spins, aerial manuevers, and 3D movement. The Man seemed to fly everywhere without any strings attached. Excellent.

The movie ends with the death of the Warlord, restoration of peace, and liberation from the oppressive Governor. The Iron Monkey hero is need no more and Dr Yang can continue practicing medicene for the betterment of the community. Jade Tiger and his son earn new-found respect and admiration for each other and return home.

5 out of 5 stars Robin Hood .......2006-11-01

A Doctor who helps heal people, by night he robs the rich and gives to the poor. How he fights a corrupt government official and comes to the aid of a Herbalist who has a son. His passion for a concubine turns to love and how they form a partnership in business. In the end good things happen. Watch the movie, and judge for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars A good film ruined by special effects.......2006-08-09

Donnie Yen is an incredibly talented martial artist and this movie goes a long way to proving that. Unfortunately some of the action is speeded up to the point that it's quite laughable - no idea why because the guy's just unbelievable at normal speed! And there's too much wire work - people defying gravity - for me. The story's nothing special, the acting a little above the usual Hong Kong fare, but the bad guy's can really kick butt and there are some great gems in and amongst the fight scenes. Definitely one of the better HK flicks, just not one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Kung Fu action at it's finest..........2006-06-20

Reading some of the other posters, I'm not 100% surprised if some content was edited out, which I haven't seen. Beyond that, the storyline is entertaining, and the fighting styles are heavily "wire-fu" but very inventive anyway.

If you are looking for solid "wire-fu" action, this film will meet and exceed those expectations handily.

Though it wasn't Jackie Chan's first film, Drunken Master is the film that cemented his stardom. Jackie plays the rebellious son of a kung fu master. To teach Jackie the value of discipline, his father apprentices him to another master named So Hi, who has a unique "drunken" fighting style. Jackie chafes at So Hi's rigorous exercises and runs away--only to be brutally humiliated at the hands of a hired killer named Thunderleg. Chastened, Jackie becomes So Hi's devoted student. He soon discovers he will need everything he's learned when Thunderleg is hired to kill his father. In Drunken Master, Jackie is only beginning to cultivate his mixture of action and comedy; here the emphasis is on kung fu acrobatics. But the kung fu is astounding. The final fight is dizzying and amazingly choreographed by director Yuen Woo-ping (now famous as the fight choreographer for The Matrix). --Bret Fetzer

arrived in a month, which is normal for me. And the dvd was in excellent conditions.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Kung-Fu Movies.......2007-04-12

If you are looking for an old school 80's style Kung-Fu movie with great choreography, a variety of styles (crane, snake, tiger claw, etc), and the English dubbing with Chinese mouth movements (sometimes continuing after an English sentence is completed), then this is the movie for you. The only thing missing is the high flying acrobatics such as jumping on the roof of a house. In addition to the above, the movie includes the amazing stunts and use of remote items (chairs stunts, buckets, brooms, etc.) that are common among Jackie Chan films. Drunken Master is a great movie that shows Jackie Chan's skills as a marital artist and the breadth of styles he is familiar with. Bravo!

2 out of 5 stars I know you have to take the dialog and acting.............2007-02-05

.....with a grain of salt but, except for the amazing final fight scene and the hilarious Drunken Master himself, this movie was un-funny and almost unwatchable at times. Too bad, because we loved Chan's second Drunken Master movie but this one left us very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Chan Adventure.......2006-11-10

This was truly a classic martial arts film. It combined the prowess and acting ability of Jackie Chan with the excellent direction and choreography of Yuen Wo Ping. If you've seen "The Legend of Drunken Master", that's only the second half of the story. I strongly suggest you see how it all starts with this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Jackie at his best.......2006-11-01

This is probably my favorite Jackie Chan film of all time. Disregard the recycled story line and focus on his amazing athletic ability and the expertly choreagraphed fight sequences - this is what made Jackie great. The one trait I most admired about him was his very clever use of props during these scenes. He would take a seemingly ordinary object and use it to his advantage during a fight. But also in less violent moments as well...a lighthearted chopstick duel over a piece of chicken. Excellent. In this age of blue-screen and CG, I am so glad we have these early films when everything was done right then and there on the set. Film making at it's best.

Winner of numerous awards including Best Actor at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, In the Mood for Love confirmed that Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai is a major figure in world cinema. As passionate as it is politely discreet, his film takes place in 1962 Hong Kong, where neighboring apartment dwellers Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) and Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) discover that their oft-absent spouses are having an affair. This realization parallels their own mutual attraction, but fidelity and decency ensure that their intimate bond remains unspoken though deeply understood. With a stealthy, eavesdropping camera style and a screenplay created through spontaneous on-set inspiration, Wong Kar-wai crafts an intricate, finely tuned platonic romance, enhancing its ambience with a kaleidoscope of color (most notably in Cheung's dazzling wardrobe of cheongsam dresses) and careful attention to character detail. Deservedly placed on many critics' top 10 lists, this elegant film should not be missed. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Hong Kong, 1962: Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-zhen move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are polite and formal-until a discovery about their respective spouses sparks an intimate bond. At once delicately mannered and visually stunning, Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments in time.

3 out of 5 stars One note song.......2007-07-05

I was more engrossed in this film than I should have been. It has a very simple plot. No twists and turns. Just the one question: "Will they or won't they?"

Basically, it's the prolonged musings of a man and woman thrown together because their spouses are having an affair. They're too principled to readily give into their own obvious chemistry. Or are they?

Like the other Wong Kar Wai films I have seen, this is beautifully directed and photographed. It is set in Hong Kong of the 1960s, therefore, vaguely familiar to us Westerners who remember the 1960s. But, if I watch it again, it will be because of a need to revel in Maggie Cheung's sex appeal, especially in the form-fitting cheongsom dresses popular in Hong Kong the 60s.

Is this another of Amazon's DVD language oversights? For the single DVD version of In the Mood for Love they list the film's language as ENGLISH! YET the language of the Criterion version (which is more than double the price of the single version and that Amazon sells) the language is listed correctly as Cantonese.

What gives with Amazon - is the Criterion in Cantonese and the single DVDs in English? Qing!(Please!)

5 out of 5 stars wow awesome film.......2007-04-29

i have to say the film was one of my faves. when i read the plot outline i saw it was boring and slow and dumb and i thought "pfff i aint buyin this!" but then i watched a commercial for it (yea im obsessed w/ commercials) and just in the commercial itself the cinimatography (sp?) was AMAZING.
the film was slow and if wong kar-wai wanted, he could do the same story in 30 minutes but it would never ever meet the graceful and elegant movie here. the slowness is not boring but enchanting and beautiful. its a film of its own kind. i strongly sujest it.

    5 out of 5 stars Welcome to a dream!.......2007-04-19

I bought this DVD after reading a review on a magazine about they way it was beautifully shot and referring to the movie as a wonder to look at. Well, I have to say that this movie by far exceeded my already grand expectations of it. It truly is like entering a dream in which you feel like a close spectator of a reality that defies reality. You know it is not real; yet, you can't help but stare and believe. The scenary is just something that will haunt you for days. The music is just amazing and complements the visual effects very well. It adds to the surreal dream-like aura. The dialogue does not waste a single line. From the get-go, we are being seduced into a trance that allows the movie to capture us and take our imagination to another place. This movie is like a hallucinogenic that allows us to marvel at the simplest of things like the sound of a heavy rain. It has taught me that sometimes you say the most by not saying much and just listening and observing. That's what you should all do...get this movie, listen and observe.

Innocuous, innocent, and somewhat idiotic, Disney's bubbleheaded road-movie comedy plays as a farcical remake of the 1976 cult TV-movie melodrama The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Jake Gyllenhaal is the goodhearted innocent raised in a sort of human Habitrail of plastic rooms and rubber tunnels. To win back the girl of his dreams (Marley Shelton), he steps out of his indoor greenhouse and into a homemade Ziplock bubble suit. It's the usual story: naive innocent bounces down the highway like a beach ball with legs and wins over the wacky supporting cast of soft-hearted bikers, zombielike teenage cultists, and orphaned "freaks" through purity and pluck. The premise wears thin after a while, but Gyllenhaal keeps the film bounding along with goofy innocence and energetic eagerness. Swoosie Kurtz costars as his religious-zealot clinging mom. Watch for Fabio in an inspired cameo. --Sean Axmaker

    Description

From the producer of the outrageous AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME, BUBBLE BOY is the hilarious, laugh-out-loud comedy about a sheltered young man (Jake Gyllenhaal -- OCTOBER SKY) who breaks all the rules on a wild adventure to get the girl of his dreams! Though he's lived his entire life within the confines of a protective plastic bubble and under the ever-watchful eye of his overprotective mother (Swoosie Kurtz -- GET OVER IT), Jimmy Livingston (Gyllenhaal) never thought that he'd missed out on anything, until the girl next door (Marley Shelton -- VALENTINE, SUGAR & SPICE) ran off to get married in Niagara Falls. With the wedding only days away, Jimmy has no choice but to build a mobile "bubble suit" and set off across the country to stop the wedding and confess his love to her!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2007-06-10

I thought this movie was pretty funny and sometimes sad that someone who was born without immunity would just live in an isolation bubble in his room for mostly his whole life it really must feel like that he's a prisoner his whole life. The bubble boy is headed out to niagra falls to stop a wedding and purpose to a girl he's madly inlove with. He meets alot of people on the road bikers hippies freaks and they all are willing to help bubble boy out. The ending was pretty insane though but has a real happy ending. Did he ever get out of his bubble? see the movie and find out. The only thing I hate is the punk rock music in this movie I hate punk rock I would not buy the sound track I would Buy the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly paced farce!.......2007-02-08

This was just a great time, a farce with perfect timing and pitch--crazy characters all around doing expected and sometimes unexpected things. Brought all the parties together nicely at the end, and used well the opportunity to poke fun at just about everybody. Jakey's goofy grin, bedroom eyes and overall innocence... what a killer combo! The "$500!" back-and-forth sequences had me on the floor, and I don't know how they did that with a straight face.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-01-12

"Five Hundred Dollars!" This movie is a classic. I can sum it up in one word, "Beetlejuice". Not the movie, the actor who gained fame (?) on Howard Stern. He cracks me up. The cast as a whole takes the premise of the movie seriously and that leads to some over the top performances, especially the mother as played by Swoosie Kurtz. Sit Down, Press Play, and Start Laughing.

    4 out of 5 stars Silly...but so very funny.......2006-11-19

I finally got over my snobbery to actually watch this movie and I'm so glad that I did. True the premise get a little old somewhere around the middle, but Gyllenhaal keeps you interested and emotionally invested--a sign of a truelly good actor. Warning: you need to be in a goofy mood to enjoy this film. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Casting Choice, Very Funny Movie.......2006-06-18

This movie is an underated comedy that deserves more credit that it recieved when it came out in theaters. Critics were quick to stomp all over this movie because of the so-called insensitivity to bubble community. Everytime a movie comes out all different kinds of groups have to come out and spoil something great. This movie has a great story line and an amazing cast. Of course Swoozie as the over protective mom just made this movie even better as it went on. Jake does comedy very well and brings this bubble boy character to life. See the movie and judge for yourselves.
