Wasn't all that.......2006-07-23
I am stand-up comedy fan, but after watching this DVD it didn't really leave an effect on me to say that it is a must see!
I would not advice nobody not to buy it, but buy it knowing that it isn't all that funny as the hype in the beginning of the DVD with the superstars saying how funny the dvd is!
Okay... but not breathtaking funny........2005-09-07
I read the harsh reviews before purchasing the DVD and out of these reviews. I agree with Tommy Williams. After watching it a few times it's not ALL that bad but I will admit that it's not ALL that good either.
Let me say that Alex Thomas IS a funny comedian but what kills his performance on this DVD is lack of substance.
His whole comedy routine is just straight out street and gutter with a whole bunch of profanities. Basically no different from what you would hear at a neighborhood street corner or at a cookout with a drunk uncle trying to be entertaining.
I'm not saying that I'm against cussing or that Alex Thomas ought to be like a Bill Cosby; but to sit for 45 minutes and hear Alex talking about F**% This, F**% That, Nig*a This, Nig*a That, Big Di*ks/Nuts and simulating Gays and Homosexuality, Etc is played out to me.
If thats the case, You might as well rent "In Living Color" the series collection and basically get the same routine without the explicits.
Now on the other hand as for showmanship, Alex does great skits, imitating the characters that he's talking about. My favorite skit is when he imitate people as animals. That was funny. And a few other skits are funny but just not gut wrenching funny.
My advice would be to rent it first and then base your judgement unless you are a Alex Thomas fan.
Truthfully, It's Okay but it won't be one of those DVD's that I would be playing regularly.
didnt laugh once.......2004-02-29
i think maybe i saw the preview for this on another platinum series dvd and it looked funny so i bought it because i wasnt real familiar with alex thomas i had just seen him on a couple shows, but it wasnt funny not at all. it couldnt end soon enough at first i was thinking it would get funny then i just wanted to take it out not funny, shoulda rented it and not bought it
A Disappointment.......2004-02-26
I've seen quite a few comedy specials over the years and this has got to rank up there with Jerry Seinfeld as one of the worse. The DVD cover compared this special to Eddie Murphy's Delirious and Chris Rock's Bigger and Blacker. You gotta be kidding me. This comes no where close. I think I chuckled once. I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't funny.
The mark of a great comedian is that s/he talks about what people can relate to. Alex Thomas talks about random things that few can relate to and at times even contradicts himself. He talks about how much he hates all the cussin' in today's raps, yet his comedy is filled with F and N words. Not that there's anything wrong with that...it just wasn't funny. Bottomline, don't waste your time or money with this one. Even the cameo by Tyra Banks couldn't save this DVD.
Not that bad upon further viewing..........2003-02-18
I think this DVD ranks with certain movies like Next Friday or Don't Be a Menace... in the fact that when you first watch it, it isn't that funny. But when you watch it the second time, you catch all the jokes and it becomes one of your favorites. The thing that is lacking in this venue is that AT picked the wrong place to film this special. It was filmed in a wide open auditorium type atmosphere and you can't hear the laughs from the audience. You realize when you watch shows like "Everybody Loves Raymond" how much a "laugh track" adds to the show. If you watch a show and hear no one laugh you tend to not laugh too, because you figure it must not be funny if no one is laughing. But the show WAS funny. When they pan the audience you see major players like Robert Townsend and Damon Wayans and THEY are laughing. People had tears in there eyes in the audience, but you couldn't hear them on the DVD and it took a lot away from the performance. The sh#ts funny.. give it a chance... I'm from Missouri, so there's no California (where he's from) bias.
