The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 was What the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about... well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it. Talking heads (not identified until film's end) include JZ Knight, who appears in the movie channeling Ramtha, the ancient sage she claims communicates through her (other speakers are also associated with Knight's organization). What she says actually makes pretty good common sense--Ramtha's wiggier notions are not included--and would be easy to accept were it not being credited to a 35,000-year-old mystic from Atlantis. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-07-02

This is an interesting visual and scientific exploration of the Hermetic Principle "The Universe is Mental". Or at least that's what I got out of it. I highly recommend it for students of metaphysics, occultists, magicians, and even people simply interested in theories about quantum physics. It's worth watching a few times.

1 out of 5 stars Defective DVD from Amazon.......2007-07-01

I bought this DVD from AMAZON over 60 days ago so it is over the return policy date. It was a birthday present and I it bought early. I sent the item. It was returned to me becuase the DVD was defective. The picture ran but there was no audio. I have just emailed Amazon my request for a refund. I do not know if they will refund it or not. I am listing this not as a complaint but to state that I was given a defective DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Tripe........2007-07-01

What the Bleep!? is nothing more than New Age tripe. A haphazardly directed B movie with laughable early 90s special effects, a schizophrenically discordant plot-line, pompous wanna-be quantum physics "experts" and one woman named JZ Knight who could probably be diagnosed with DID and delusions of grandeur, this "documentary" is nonsense and a waste of any serious person's time.

4 out of 5 stars Go for your Dreams.......2007-06-30

Why not? Keep your head on straight enough to be healthy and love. However, why not go for your deepest dreams with everything you've got? You may not buy everything in this film, but hey, a closed mind gathers no knowledge. Give it a chance and take what you want and leave the rest for another moment.

5 out of 5 stars Very Deep.......2007-06-30

I love this movie/documentary, althought I have to admit that it took me awhile to get into it, but once I did, oh boy, it was like a light bulb suddenly flashing in my head. It made me think about everything in life in a new way, my whole life perseptive change after viewing this movie. Don't miss it !!

The character of newspaperman Chuck Taylor (Kirk Douglas) is best summed up by an astonished bystander (herself no soft touch): "I met a lot of hard-boiled eggs in my time, but you--you're 20 minutes!" Meet the "hero" of Billy Wilder's corrosive 1951 classic Ace in the Hole (a.k.a. The Big Carnival), a former big-time reporter whose reputation is so tarnished he's now at an Albuquerque rag, chasing down local-interest stuff. Until, that is, a local miner gets stuck in a cave--a situation that Taylor not only exploits but actually manipulates, the better to improve his career chances. Wilder got the idea for the movie from the real-life media circus that followed the Floyd Collins story (Collins was trapped in a cave for over a week in 1925). Needless to say, the opportunities for displaying greed and venality are fully drawn out by Wilder; indeed, the film looks unbelievably prescient from a modern perspective of media overload.

Although Wilder had scored a success with Sunset Boulevard just a year earlier, he misread the public's ability to stare into the merciless mirror he held up to them in Ace in the Hole. The movie bombed. Paramount changed the title to The Big Carnival, thus wrecking one of Wilder's most acidic puns, but it didn't help. It also doesn't matter: Ace in the Hole is one of the truly grown-up movies of its time, and age has only improved it. Wilder's ear for cynical dialogue is honed to its sharpest point, and Kirk Douglas has one of his best parts, which he attacks with customary ferocity. Jan Sterling plays the hard-nosed wife of the trapped man, with Porter Hall as Douglas's publisher--the lone voice of decency in the film's cruel parade. Admirably, Wilder takes this all the way down the line: the ending of the movie might be the best in-your-face finish since Public Enemy. --Robert Horton

Studio description

One of the most scathing indictments of American culture ever produced by a Hollywood filmmaker, Academy Award-winner Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole is legendary for both its cutting social critique and its status as a hard-to-find cult classic. Kirk Douglas gives the fiercest performance of his career as Chuck Tatum, an amoral newspaper reporter caught in dead-end Albuquerque who happens upon the story of a lifetime-and will do anything to ensure he gets the scoop. Wilder's follow-up to Sunset Boulevard is an even darker vision, a no-holds-barred expose that anticipated the rise of the American media circus.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Wilder's Lost Masterwork Get's the Royal Criterion Treatment.......2007-05-05

"Ace in the Hole" is one of those movies that comes around every rare often and belts you right in the kisser. Yet, to my knowledge, Paramount has never released it on VHS, and certainly not on LaserDisc or DVD. Until now: Criterion is releasing a DVD with a cleaned-up print and all the bells and whistles. Until it comes out, I will have to console myself with my VHS third-generation copy that was recorded in the 1980s from some TV channel in Florida. The print is grainy, the sound warbles and the dialogue is out of sync at times. It nonetheless still packs a helluva wallop.

Read the bottom of pages on which Wilder's movies are sold: "Customers who bought DVDs directed by Billy Wilder also bought DVDs by these directors:

"Howard Hawks
"Alfred Hitchcock
"John Huston
"William Wyler
"George Cukor"

There isn't one weak or less than legendary director in this list. Personally, I rate Wilder right up there with Hitch and ahead of all the others. Yet, when Paramount released their DVD boxed set of three Wilder classics ("Sunset Boulevard," "Sabrina" and "Stalag 17"), "Ace in the Hole" was conspicuously absent. What a shame! I consider this his masterwork, arguably equalling "Double Indemnity" and "The Apartment."

Critics have called it a black comedy, I suppose because it's a Billy Wilder movie, so we reflexively think of him as a comedic director. In fact, having heard and read so much about this movie, I sort of felt jinxed, because when I go into a movie with high expectations, I come out of it a little disappointing.

And, the opening of this movie disappointed a little: When Kirk Douglas' character, Charlie Tatum, falls down on his luck and lands a job with an Albuquerque newspaper, it seems to be a bit of a new spin on an old classic, "The Front Page" (which, strangely enough, Wilder resurrected in 1974 as a Matthau/Lemmon vehicle).

Yet, that's the movie's genius, because you are lured into thinking it's a comedy. Yet, once Kirk Douglas finds his potential "Pulitzer-prize winning story" buried under fallen timbers in a New Mexico cave, you realise it's a cynical farce.

But then, it's no longer a farce, but a dark tragedy. Not so quick, because by the end you'll find it's an abomination -- not the movie itself, which is superbly casted and crafted -- because it shows at root what base intentions really drive mankind.

Of all his movies, it's the oddest. Imagine a cross between "Double Indemnity" and "The Fortune Cookie." Strange, I know, but that is the closest I can pin it down. Douglas' character is an even more cold-blooded version of Walter Matthau's supreme shyster Whiplash Willie. Think of William Holden's Sergeant Seften without the heart of gold, and you'll get Chuck Tatum.

Jan Sterling is equally, well, sterling as the victim's wife, whose blood runs as ice-cold as Barbara Stanwyck's Phyllis Dietrichson. Sterling, though, is no femme fatale: She's too tawdry, and can only aspire to the unimaginative dreams that accompany her former dime-a-dance persona. She does slip a pair of scissors into Douglas' flank, but, hey, he had it coming.

The ending, which I won't give away, is chilling and powerful. Nobody could write ending lines like Wilder could, and this one is no exception. It's right up there with Fred MacMurray's "I love you, too" ("Double Indemnity"), Shirley MacLaine's "Shut up and deal" ("The Apartment"), Gloria Swanson's "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille" ("Sunset Boulevard") and Joe E. Brown's "Nobody's perfect" ("Some Like it Hot").

"Ace in the Hole" walks on the seedy and seamy side of journalist and shows the viewer all the manipulation behind the scenes of the newspaper racket. It presages other blisteringly scathing films as "A Face in the Crowd," "Sweet Smell of Success" and "Network."

5 out of 5 stars One of Billy Wilder's Masterpieces.......2007-05-04

This 1951 film seems as relevant today as it ever did. Kirk Douglas is perfectly cast as an unethical newspaper reporter who, through his influence over the town's sheriff, keeps a dying man trapped in a mine for several days longer than necessary in order to milk the story for all it's worth - a strategy he hopes will help him claw his way back to the top of the journalistic world. Billy Wilder's incredibly vitriolic film tells many truths about how reality is manipulated by the media to serve personal and political ends without regard to the suffering caused by this agenda. His film spares nobody in its critique: those who perpetuate the lies, those who directly benefit from them, even those who uncritically consume the stories are all complicit in the wrongdoing. Wilder made many great films, most of which are far better known than this one, but "Ace in the Hole" is up there with the best of them.

Criterion's upcoming release is definitely cause for celebration.

5 out of 5 stars Not To Be Missed.......2007-04-30

At last, at last, Wilder's finest film, "Ace In The Hole" (AKA "The Big Carnival") is released on DVD. For those without TCM (it's been run several times in the last month or two), you will now finally be able to see a film swimming in deep cynicism as well as experience one of the coldest characters every recorded on film - Jan Sterling's "grieving" wife. She is the female mirror to Kirk Douglas' down-on-his-luck, cruel Chuck Tatum.

More relevant in these media-frenzied times than when it was made, "Ace. . ." still packs a wallop in reminding us of the power of the press to manipulate (in Tatum's case for self-aggrandizment).

I first saw this film when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I couldn't grasp the story's nuances, but it sure put the zap on my pre-pubescent head.

Wonderfully acted from a great script under Wilder's sure hand, "Ace In The Hole" is a cinematic treasure not to be missed. (Especially for Wilder fans.) This is Wilder's masterpiece.

Thank you Criterion!

In short:

Reporter Chuck tatum (Kirk Douglas who's been kicked off every major US paper) ruthlessly exploits a man trapped in a cave he chances upon while on his way to cover a rattlesnake hunt (how fitting) for an Albuquerque daily. While an engineer promises to get the man out in hours, Reporter Tatum, and a corrupt sherrif, lean on the engineer to bore through rock. A process that'll take a week.

Tatum sells the story to the majors who lap it up. When the news breaks nationwide, thousands descend on the disaster. The scenes of the carnival invited by Leo's wife (Jan Sterling) to set up and cheesy country western singer twanging a guitar while singing about poor Leo (the trapped man), are powerful.

O Leo, Leo, Leee-Oooo
We're Coming Leo

5 out of 5 stars Gets more relevant every year!.......2007-04-02

First of all, I want to remind people how amazing it is that Wilder managed to get this withering assessment of capitalism and the mass media made while deep in the bowels of the McCarthy era (1951) when anyone who didn't wave their pompoms for the great US of A and everything it stood for, usually got hauled in front of a Congressional committee of some sort or other. As miraculous in its own way as Marcel Carne's "Children of Paradise" getting made during the Nazi occupation of France.

Now how can you look at the Tatum character today and not see Karl Rove? Amazing!

This movie seamlessly weaves a great story into several still-timely themes, such as the mining of tragedy for profit; the distortion and manipulation of reality by the mass media for profit and circulation; the exploitation of the environment and disrespect of native peoples; the human foible of scrabbling onto the coattails of a media event for the mean purpose of self-aggrandizement. Man, this film is a veritable treasure trove of significant cultural phenomena. And to think it was made BEFORE television, satellite and the Internet! Wow.

The picture's literal "Ace in the Hole" is young Leo Cole, a young miner trapped by an avalanche in a mine shaft. He becomes Tatum's "ace in the hole" for a big story and self-glorification. Cole, in his native goodness and naivete, is almost a Christ like figure, totally beyond and ethically superior to the maggots swarming about his fate.

If this picture doesn't break your heart, you don't have one.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Wilder's Neglected Masterpiece.......2007-03-14

This 1951 film seems as relevant today as it ever did. For now the only way to see it is on a bootlegged DVD or the Turner Classic Movies channel. A Criterion edition is due out this summer.

Few films have defined a generation as The Graduate did. The alienation, the nonconformity, the intergenerational romance, the blissful Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack--they all served to lob a cultural grenade smack into the middle of 1967 America, ultimately making the film the third most profitable up to that time. Seen from a later perspective, its radical chicness has dimmed a bit, yet it's still a joy to see Dustin Hoffman's bemused Benjamin and Anne Bancroft's deliciously decadent, sardonic Mrs. Robinson. The script by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham is still offbeat and dryly funny, and Mike Nichols, who won an Oscar for his direction, has just the right, light touch. --Anne Hurley

5 out of 5 stars The Graduate.......2007-06-28

One of the signature films of the 1960s, this feature introduced the world to Hoffman and gave Bancroft a racy role she played with marvelous feline cunning. This sublime black comedy transcends its period, speaking to new generations of alienated youth beginning to navigate a discordant, dysfunctional adult world. The supporting cast, including deft character players William Daniels and Murray Hamilton, are note-perfect, and that Simon & Garfunkel score still stirs the soul. A must for repeat viewings.

3 out of 5 stars INTERESTING LOVE STORY FOR CRAZY ERA.......2007-06-09

The film boosted the profile of folk-rock duo Simon and Garfunkel, whose soundtrack album (The Graduate Original Soundtrack), on the strength of the hit single "Mrs. Robinson", rose to the top of the charts in 1968 (knocking off The Beatles' White Album).

The theme song of the movie, "The Sounds of Silence" is a melodramatic, slightly mournful tune. It manages to give the movie a sort of tension, which it demonstrates in other arenas. The generational gap is one of these themes which plays out throughout the movie. The songs seem to mainly play during moments of this particular tension, such as the scene when Ben is forced into the pool by his parents in his scuba outfit. The music gives the film a certain quality, without which it would be vastly different. Simon and Garfunkel were referred to as the "voice of a generation," and this is exactly what they provide in the movie for Benjamin and Elaine.

According to a Variety article by Peter Bart in the 15 May 2005 issue, Nichols had become obsessed with Simon & Garfunkel's music while shooting the film. Lawrence Turman, his producer, made a deal for Simon to write three new songs for the movie. By the time they were nearly finished editing the film, Simon had only written one new song. Nichols begged him for more but Simon, who was touring constantly, told him he didn't have the time. He did play him a few notes of a new song he had been working on; "It's not for the movie... it's a song about times past -- about Mrs. Roosevelt and Joe DiMaggio and stuff." Nichols advised Simon, "It's now about Mrs. Robinson, not Mrs. Roosevelt."

The Graduate is a classic. This is probably Dustin Hoffman's greatest performance. Never have I felt for such an awkward character. The cinetamography and directing is amazing. The ending is perfect. A most buy!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE ABOUT AN INDIVIDUALIST.......2007-03-15

Without giving spoilers away, I immediately see parallels that can be drawn between Groundhog Day and The Graduate. The main characters are individuals who, in their own way, are seeking happiness. Unlike Bill Murray's character in Groundhog Day, Hoffmann's Benjamin Braddock does not have the predicament or fortune, depending on how you look at it, of facing a "nine lives" way of living and reliving the exact same calendar day until he gets his life squared up and in order.

In both movies, there is plenty of stumbling and bumbling and repetitive, aimless wandering reminiscent of La Dolce Vita. Braddock is faced with several obstacles in his pursuit of happiness. He has just graduated from college and is expected to get a job and live out a life that is prescribed or envisioned by his parents and nearby locals.

Though he is a bit of an egoist and an egotist, Benjamin Braddock is willing to go against the grain to sort things out in his life and determine what his underlying sources of happiness truly are. This type of searching often puts him at odds with others, in fact, practically everyone else, and perhaps rightfully so, but the viewer almost cannot help but admire the "It ain't over 'til it's over" perseverance that comes to define this character.

In sum, after having also read and done a review of Ayn Rand's novel, We the Living, a book about a girl who is willing to sacrifice her personal safety in pursuit of her dreams, I conclude that The Graduate is a 1960's movie adaptation of this work but in a Western society with much fewer societal perils. A great character study is truly contained in this motion picture in a way that is not quite equalled forty years after the fact.

Five diplomas out of five for this movie!

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-03-04

Pretty much everybody agrres that this movie is a classic. Is it though a five star film? If you judge it from today's perspective probably not. But if you judge it from the perspective of the 60's it is. It talks (via Benjamin) about the new generation that does not know what to do with his life and his fears. Anne Bancroft is not the perfect looking woman, but she does have the capability and, in a certain way, the charm to seduce the young graduate. The film tends to be a bit slow, but again that is judging it from todays stadards and it is not exactly fair. The photography, the music and the perfomance of the cast is superb. Lets not forget that Alfa Romeo chaged the name of the car to "graduate" and sold it ntil the 80s in the US mostly due to the image of the movie.
A true classic.

This kid-friendly disc serves as an advance for the DVD release of Disney's Treasure Planet feature, while emphasizing the story's roots in the written word. The main attraction is the movie's story, which can be read aloud in five different languages while viewers watch successive, still images from the original animated film. Sound strange? Sure, but the process is engrossing for children--a natural audience for storytelling. Also on board is a multilingual vocabulary experience, in which you can hear words associated with Treasure Planet's story (e.g., "chest") in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Two songs from the film, written and performed by Goo Goo Dolls icon John Rzeznik, also get the image-by-image treatment, though the disc also includes a powerful, ghostly celestial music video for Rzeznik's "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)." There's also a game compatible with Playstation 2 (and other gaming consoles with DVD drive). --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT IDEA!!!.......2007-06-30

For Disney to make a movie like this. This is a very imaginative movie that stretches your mind to the limits of animation in a very "science fiction" sort of way. I do enjoy Disney movies because they are very orginal in their stories and characters and every movie is very unique. I do think that this one will be a classic before long for both young and old. I highly recommend this one to anyone that loves Disney movies!!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Disney movie.......2007-06-12

I don't know what it is that pulled me into this movie. I think it's the futuristic setting along with Jim. I really like his character and I like Silver's too. Everyone keeps saying that it's more of a "teenager movie" instead of a kid movie. The thing is, kids are going to grow up and I think that this would be a great movie for them to watch to help them to follow their dreams. Anyway, that's just my outlook on it. Overall, I just really love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars totally underrated movie .......2007-05-05

Treasure Planet is by far one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. I'm so shocked it gets such bad reviews!

It's a classic story of adventure and coming-of-age, adapted from the novel "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. No, it is not a direct interpretation! But that's ok. The characters and the story are adapted from the novel to fit with the culture and imagination of today's world, and given a magical twist, as if 1800s England had special sci-fi technology.

In this version, Jim is a boy of fifteen whose father-angst has left him committing crimes and having trouble at home and at school, much to the pain of his young mother, Sarah. A chance meeting with old Billy Bones, former cabin-boy to the dreaded pirate Captain Flint, ends with him being given the map and key to Treasure Planet, a fabled place that contains the Loot of a Thousand Worlds, taken by Flint. This begins Jim's chance to set out on his own and learn about the world and who he is, and what potential he has.

The relationship between Silver and Jim is similar, but not exactly the same. It becomes a deep father/son relationship, with Jim finding in Silver what he always wanted from his deadbeat father. Silver is enigmatic, double-faced, and powerful, but grows a deep, unexpected soft spot for Jim that changes his mind about the treasure he's always sought.

Overall, I think the movie is fantastic. The animation is buttery smooth and is visually stunning, the characters are unique and interesting and all have a history long before the story takes place, and the adaptation from the original novel is very clever and updates the story well. The music, done by James Newton Howard and Johnny Rzeznik, is absolutely gorgeous, with a touch of Celtic influence added to the powerful orchestrations and themes. The story is heartwarming and powerful.

4 out of 5 stars Argghhhhh.......2007-04-11

What a wonderful twist on the classic Treasure Island. Silver is a cyborg and young Jim is a typical teen looking to find his place. Morph is a wonderful addition and will grab you and pull you into the adventure and fun.

Disney's foray into big-budget science fiction, close on the heels of Star Wars, had some of the most impressive special effects to grace theater screens in the 1970s. Graced by handsome production design--most notably a glass and latticework interstellar craft that looks like a battleship crossed with a modern skyscraper--The Black Hole is in many ways the most beautiful science fiction film of its era. Unfortunately, the graceful and gorgeous picture is jarred by dialogue that wouldn't pass muster in a comic book and a silly conclusion that plays like a murky, dime-store knockoff of 2001. Too bad, because the visual realization of the film is a veritable haunted house of futuristic phenomena, from the cloaked zombie-like drones shuffling through corridors to the devilish, crimson robot Maximillian, the strong arm of the mad scientist played by Maximilian Schell (a kind of wild man Captain Nemo with an even more ruthless temperament). Only the way-too-cute robot V.I.N.CENT (voiced by Roddy McDowall), a merchandising gimmick that looks like a Fisher-Price toy, mars the technological landscape. Robert Forster is the quietly authoritative captain of an exploration ship that stumbles across the seemingly derelict ship, and Anthony Perkins, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, and Joseph Bottoms fill out his crew. This is one case of a triumph of art direction and special effects over story--it's worth sitting through it to see the magnificent scene of the fireball rolling through the ship's enormous hull alone. The rest is just atmospheric gravy. --Sean Axmaker

Description

The U.S.S. Cygnus is perched precariously at the edge of a black hole -- the vast, empty nothingness where space and time end. Anything that crosses its border enters a universe of the complete unknown. And so begins a story that only Disney's film magicians could tell. A story of robots and humanoids. Of human genius and madness. And a spectacular descent into nature's ultimate mystery -- The Black Hole.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars First unit vs. second unit .......2007-06-12

This movie is super dumb and cheesy, but I love it. It must be that 11-year-old effect, as that's the age I was when this came out. I had ALL the illustrated storybooks and models and fold-out posters... everything that was released before the movie came out. Ooh, I even had the LP that told the story of the movie with sound effects and dialogue! It was all in anticipation, however, because once I saw it I realized, even as a small [actually somewhat portly] 11-year-old, that this movie was DUMB.

Then I reevaluated as an adult. I tell you, a great deal of fun [and some small agony] can be had by going back to those Disney movies that defined your youth. For me it was the live-action period that yielded gems such as Escape to Witch Mountain [WHERE is the remake?!?!?!?] and such burnished turds as The Cat From Outer Space. And I saw them all, and for the most part, read the "novelizations."

Anyway, back to this one. This movie has some GREAT material, and some terrible material. Curiously, it seems that all the legitimately great material was provided by people who were NOT the director. The model of the Cygnus is cool. My favorite part of the movie is the shots of the huge ship silhouetted against the bluish starfields beyond, and the languid sequence in which the smaller Palomino drifts by it with its spotlight running over the latticework of the larger ship. The design of the red evil robot is awesome. The black hole itself is fascinating to look at [day-glo paint in a whirlpool]. Oh, and I love the opening music, and I like the green grid under the credits, though that's a little less defensible. So what it seems like is that you have a bunch of peripheral people, the model makers, the special effects folks, the composer, etc., giving their all and producing great work, which stands in shocking contrast to the rest of the movie!

The movie concerns a bunch of folks in the typical "about to go home after X years exploring space" mission. They find the black hole, then see the big ship near it, and go to investigate in the aforementioned favorite sequence. Then there's a slight action sequence in which they start to tumble into the black hole.

THEN you have the most hootworthy sequence of the entire film, in which it is revealed that the woman aboard is PSYCHIC. Not only that, but so is the ROBOT [with the big dumb cartoon eyes]. My favorite part of all this is the convention that the psychic woman, to convey that she's using her abilities, stares dreamily off into space, and the robot, to show that he's receiving the psychic message, suddenly snaps his eyes to face directly into the camera! That is SO precious.

Anyway, so their ship is--of course--damaged, and they have to land. They explore the ship, make it to the bridge, where the captain, who may as well be wearing an "evil genius" badge, greets them, along with his menacing red robot. Blah, blah, blah, it all follows a "haunted house in space" theme, until it is revealed that the captain made robots [cyborgs, I guess] out of all the crew and now they're--still the crew, just a bit less uppity.

It all has that charmingly naïve dippiness of those live-action Disney movies, especially in its utter obliviousness to its own clichés. The robots with the cute eyes are obviously there to appeal to the kids [like I was at the time, but even then I could see that it was... obviously there to appeal to the kids]. There's this one sequence in which the robots play a video game... against a robot called S.T.A.R.... oh dear, it hurts. But for all that there are sequences that are kind of cool, like the asteroid shower. WHY asteroids are all glowing from within, and why one is perfectly spherical, and why they all show up JUST at the right time, is left unexplained, but it's still kind of cool in a naïve way. You accept it when you know it's a Disney movie made for 10-year-olds.

Anyway, the other reason this movie is notable is for the ending. [I guess I have to put a SPOILER WARNING in here, even though in this case... anyway.] There is a lot of IDIOTIC claptrap about the black hole possibly being a PORTAL TO HELL [oooohhh!], and at the very end, the evil captain is shown INSIDE the evil robot [trapped for eternity inside his own creation! Wah-ha-ha-ha-ha!!], in this representation of a literal HELL, with red background, black jagged rocks, flames, the whole deal. The thing that cracks me up is that they just arrange the model on top of a rock and let it SIT THERE, arms in the air, utterly stationary, for at least a minute. It is kind of... appalling. I guess they REALLY didn't expect anyone over the age of 10 to attend this movie.

And WHAT'S with all that hyper-Christian moralizing, anyway? I thought we were watching a dumb space story.

Anyway, it's still fun and has a lot of good elements, all of which seem to have taken place without the participation of the director. Someone needs to take this and do a remake that takes the whole thing seriously.

4 out of 5 stars Into The Black Hole.......2007-06-12

If Walt Disney's 1979 sci-fi extravaganza, "The Black Hole," must be looked back upon as a failure, it is an excellent failure. Granted, this sci-fi tale about the crew of the U.S.S. spaceship Palomino encountering a madman scientist (Maximillian Schell) whose own spaceship, the U.S.S. Cygnus, is impossibly perched upon the edge of a black hole, has some very obvious flaws in it. Some of the dialogue is cheeseball, the very *idea* of Dr. Kate McCrae (Yvette Mimieux) having E.S.P. with the robot VINCENT is just plain silly, you can easily see the wires holding up the actors and the robots when they are supposed to be weightless, and the actors should've damm well been wearing spacesuits at the film's climax, when they're crawling to the top of the escape probe ship in open outer space! (Why did director Gary Nelson let his actors get away with that one?) Ah, but still...I cannot help but thoroughly enjoy "The Black Hole." The film blew me away as a child, and now, looking at the movie again as an adult, the child in me had a wonderful time all over again---even if you can still see the wires! The main achievement of "The Black Hole" is the *look* of the film---it's outstanding. The art direction, cinematography and visual effects of this film are extraordinary (utilising over 150 matte paintings). The long, spacious corridors of the Cygnus look like they stretch out for miles, the Cygnus command tower is a total feast for the eyes, and I could go on and on. John Barry's rousing musical score is arguably the best film score he's done outside of the James Bond films (and when will it be released on CD? C'mon, Disney, you released the "Tron" soundtrack, so where's "The Black Hole"?). And while the movie's screenplay isn't as polished as it could've been (Mimieux's line about "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots" still makes me cringe, to name one example), the film's basic plot is still a compelling one, and the movie has a suitably eerie tone to it as the Palomino crew walk through the massive corridors of the Cygnus, and slowly unravel the dark, terrible secret harbored by Dr. Reinhardt. Reinhardt's giant red robot Maximillian, with his huge frame and pulsating red eyes, is still THE scariest robot ever put on film. And the all-star cast of Schell, Mimieux, Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms and Ernest Borgnine are all good in their roles, even if these aren't the greatest performances of their respective careers. There's genuine excitement towards the end as the Cygnus is torn apart by the black hole and the surviving Palomino crew make a mad dash to the escape probe ship, and finally go *into* the black hole itself (and there are definite echoes of "2001" during this amazing sequence). And the film's surreal, cosmic ending, although confusing for many, is, for me, completely haunting and unforgettable (even if it does leave certain questions unanswered). It still disappoints me that "The Black Hole" was received so poorly back in 1979, and is not remembered with much fondness today. I just think audiences & critics at the time compared it too unfairly to "Star Wars." "The Black Hole" sure ain't "Star Wars," but on it's own, there is much to admire about it. Though not an entirely successful movie, it's still very, very ambitious, and if nothing else it's a visual masterpiece for it's technical achievements alone. "The Black Hole" is a daring film that truly deserves another look. And kudos to Walt Disney Productions for taking such a big gamble with this unique (and controversial) sci-fi movie.

5 out of 5 stars KEWL MOVIE FOR THE YEAR AND NOW.......2007-05-12

watching this movie was pretty kewl, i enjoyed it when it first came out and watching it now , with the graphics then and how technology advanced big time since then , wow!!!

4 out of 5 stars Black hole.......2007-03-24

A good Disney movie to be seen by the whole family. Good story

3 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Bad Script........2007-02-05

*SPOILERS INCLUDED*

The Black Hole is by no means a great movie but it's not a total disaster. Bad writing in my opinion is what hurts this movie. I agree with what one review I read said "Belongs in the Nice Try Catagory". The characters weren't that great except for Dr. Reinhardt played by Maximilian Schell whom we immediately see is totally crazy and evil and in fact looks it along with his red devilish robot Maximilian. The one character that I must say irritated me the most was Anthony Perkin's character. I don't say that Perkin's didn't do a good job, I think that character must not be very smart, now I don't mean in space science but in common sense. Perkin's character was so carried away by what Reinhardt had acheived that he didn't think twice about the situation and the warnings from his colligues went in one ear and out the other. Ernest Borgnine's character Harry Booth was okay but he seemed confused on certain things. First he tries to talk Robert Forrester into capturing Reinhardt's ship along with Reinhardt for failure to acknowlage the recall of his ship and the mysterous disappearance of the crew, and then he chickens out after learning what actually happened to the crew. The rest of the characters were okay and the afore mentioned characters were okay to but could have been better. I didn't understand the ending of this movie ether.

To the things that were great about this film. The set pieces for the movie were great especially the design of U.S.S. Cygnus (Reinhardt's ship), production designer Peter Ellenshaw did a great job. I also loved the robots Vincent and Old Bob (Voiced by Roddy McDowell and Slim Pickens who received no screen credit) Why they weren't credited I don't know. I think most people would agree that John Barry's music score is terrific but then I don't know of one single John Barry score that isn't. The Cinematography by Frank Phillips was good as well and in fact went on to received an Oscar nomination I believe.

All in all, this is an interesting movie to check out and I recommend you do so if you haven't. But don't expect anything like "Star Wars" or "Star Trek". This is a Disney movie and for the most part they did a nice job, it's just the writing that hurts it. Watch and judge for yourself though.

Brendan Fraser stars in Bedazzled as Elliot, a dweebish office worker who yearns for Alison (played by Frances O'Connor from Mansfield Park), a coworker who barely knows he exists. When he blithely says he'd give his soul for Alison, the Devil appears (Elizabeth Hurley, Austin Powers) and says she'll give him seven wishes in exchange. Elliot is dubious at first, but agrees out of desperation. Unfortunately, his every wish always leaves the Devil a little wiggle room. When he asks to be rich and powerful, the Devil turns him into a drug lord beset on all sides. When he asks to be a successful, well-endowed writer, the Devil adds a male lover to the mix. The setup and situations are clever, though Bedazzled doesn't delve into any real moral or theological questions and has a little less bite than the original it's based on (from 1968, starring Dudley Moore and Peter Cook). But it does provide some better comic substance than Fraser has had in most of his previous roles (George of the Jungle, Encino Man). Fraser demonstrated in Gods and Monsters that he could hold his own dramatically with the likes of Brit thespian Ian McKellen, and he's consistently been a charming presence in movies enjoyable (The Mummy) and not so enjoyable (Dudley Do Right). Bedazzled may not give him any more movie-making clout, but it does give his fans something to enjoy. O'Connor is entirely pleasant in her largely straight role, and Hurley fills out her part by delectably filling out a number of revealing outfits. An enjoyable bit of froth. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best, --- a disgrace at worst.......2007-06-30

Viewed on its own merits, this movie is a so-so dud. Well-produced & attractive, but the humor is broad, physical, and not especially subtle. Brendan Fraser is OK in his variety of roles, but Elizabeth Hurley is nothing more than eye candy and simply is not capable of making her character anything more than a series of slinky costume changes. Considering that she plays one of the two principal characters, this poses a bit of a problem. However, it doesn't appear to have disturbed a great number of testosterone-addled reviewers who reviews can be easily summed up as "Elizabeth Hurley is so HOT!" OK, then.

So --- without any context, it's just Meh. When compared to the 1967 original, it is abysmal. For those who say, just enjoy it for what it is & stop comparing to Moore & Cook: well sorry, but IT IS A REMAKE, and by its very nature invites comparisons. The comparisons are not good. The trenchant wit & savage social commentary found in the original --- the elements which made the original so brilliant --- are utterly lacking in the newer version. One can't disembowel a classic & not expect people to howl in disgust.

If you must, rent the remake, buy the original. You'll forget the remake sooner than you thought possible.

5 out of 5 stars What a Pleasant Surprise.......2007-06-07

The Dudley Moore version, which I saw in the theater years ago, was funny as I vaguely recall (haven't seen it since). When confronted with the possible purchase of this movie, and the two different versions, I ended up choosing this much cheaper one (got it used for $3.34, including shipping) on the chance that it would be at least okay and worth the purchase price. Wow, is this ever a great movie. I loved it. Very few movies get me to laugh out loud, and this one elicited a number of those. The original could not possibly have been better than this, and it's so cheap. It's like stealing. It is one of the gems of my DVD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Just a fun and enjoyable movie!.......2007-06-04

This is by no means a deep, intellectual movie. This is a comedy that is light-hearted and just plain enjoyable to watch. First off, the directing is exactly the kind that Brendan Fraser works best with, it just lets him flow naturally and he just seems to have fun.

As others have mentioned, the chemistry between Hurley and Fraiser is there. This is what makes the movie so funny and compelling to watch. You never know what funny sarcastic thing Fraser will say next, and what Hurley will fire right back with! There are elements of both flat-out humor, and subtle humor; which can mix well with the overall premice of the movie!

Be who you are and be happy with what you are given in life. Everything will work out in the end. A good movie that is well worth owning for a night where you just want to laugh!

4 out of 5 stars Devilishy funny........2007-04-12

Harold Ramis' 2000 adaptation of the dark British comedy classic Bedazzled is a blast to watch. I can't call this a remake because Ramis' casual looking version looks and feels like a different movie than its formal English counterpart. Having seen both this film and the 1967 original, I like the American version a little better.

Elliott is a nerdy guy in a dead-end job desperate to be liked by his co-workers. There's a girl at his office he's had his eye on but she doesn't notice him. Meeting the devil at a local bar, He makes a deal to sell his soul in exchange for seven wishes in the hopes of winning the girl of his dreams. Too bad he doesn't read the fine print on the contract he signs. There's ALWAYS a catch when dealing with the Devil. First he wishes he were rich and powerful- Only he's a Columbian druglord about to be betrayed by his woman and his cartel. Moments before his death He pages 666. He wishes he were sensitive, and when he cries at the sunset she dumps him. He wishes he were a basketball superstar Only to find out his "package" is small! He then wishes he were an intellectual writer with a big package-only to find out he's gay! He wishes he were president of the United States only to find he's Abe Lincoln on the night he's about to he shot by John Wilkes Booth! Six wishes later the Devil is tired of toying with him and insists he makes a final wish. He wishes for the girl of his dreams to be happy and the contract is voided. In the end he doesn't get the girl, but learns a lesson: Be yourself.

What makes Ramis' version a superior film is the solid storytelling and excellent direction. The script in this version is a lot tighter than in the clunky 1967 original and the characters are better developed and have more complex personalities. Because the writing is more concise, it makes the story easier to follow. The Original Bedazzled was a slow, tedious movie that focused so much on minor technicalities it was hard to watch. This version grabs the viewer and keeps them watching until the end.

The acting here is top notch. Brendan Fraser gives one of his best performances as the Nebbish nerdy Elliott. His comic timing and execution throughout the film remind me a lot of the late John Ritter, he really knows how to use his face and eyes to get a laugh. Elizabeth Hurley gives a great performance as the Devil; It's just a delight to watch her onscreen. She has excellent chemistry with Fraser and their comic timing is spot on. Hurley's charm and personality carries the movie through all three acts, even though she's the devil you just like her. Throughout the changes into all those stylish outfits you see her, not the clothes she wears. (J.Lo and Halle take note) That's the mark of a good actress. Frances O'Connor does gives a solid performance as the object of Elliott's desire. She holds her own in all the sketches and has great chemistry with Fraser. Comedy veterans Orlando Jones and Toby Huss add strong comedic support in all the comedy sketches.

Director Harold Ramis creates a tightly focused comedy with excellent production values and great cinematography. I felt like I was right there on those California streets in every frame. The visual effects blend with the live action and all we see are the hilarious jokes.

The Harold Ramis version of Bedazzled is definitely worth the purchase price. Pick this one up along with the 1967 original and The Devil Wears Prada for a deliciously evil movie night.

5 out of 5 stars Movie? What movie?.......2007-04-11

It's Elizabeth Hurley. The most beautiful woman on the planet:) Any movie she's in is a five star!

Drawing from Andrei Tarkovsky's heady science fiction meditation Solaris by way of Alien and Hellraiser, this visually splendid but pulpy piece of science fiction schlock concerns a mission in the year 2047 to investigate the experimental American spaceship Event Horizon, which disappeared seven years previously and suddenly, out of nowhere, reappeared in the orbit of Neptune. Laurence Fishburne stars as mission commander Captain Miller and Sam Neill is Dr. Weir, the scientist who designed the mystery ship. Miller's T-shirt- and army-green-clad crew of smart-talking pros finds a ship dead and deserted, but further investigations turn up blood, corpses, dismembered body parts, and a decidedly unearthly presence. It turns out that the ship is really a space-age haunted house where spooky (and obviously impossible) visions lure each of the crew members into situations they should know better than to enter. The ship is gorgeously designed, borrowing from the dark, organic look of Alien and adding the menacing touch of teeth sprouting from bulwark doors and clawlike spikes inexplicably shooting out of the engine room floor. Unfortunately the film is not nearly as inventive as the production design--it turns into a woefully inconsistent psychic monster movie that sacrifices mood for tepid shocks--but the special effects are topnotch, and ultimately the movie has a trashy B movie charm about it. --Sean Axmaker

Description

The year is 2047. Years earlier, the pioneering research vessel Event Horizon vanished without a trace. Now a signal from it has been detected, and the United States Aerospace Command responds. Hurtling toward the signal's source are a fearless captain (Laurence Fishburne), his elite crew and the lost ship's designer (Sam Neill). Their mission: find and salvage the state-of-the-art spacecraft. What they find is state-of-the-art interstellar terror.

3 out of 5 stars Could've been great. .......2007-05-27

This movie had so much going for it, but it never really found its groove. So many elements necessary for a good sci-fi thriller were there but not put to good use.
Having said that, I still recommend checking it out. It's kind of a mess, but I can't deny the creep factor of this movie. It's dark and brooding and has a few good shocks.
As with everything else I've seen by Paul Anderson, something's missing. It's the body of a good movie absent a soul. Maybe one of these days he'll get it all together on one. I'll look forward to it.

4 out of 5 stars some event!!.......2007-05-13

Not worthy of the fifth star, as I found the editing to be confusing, with a 'limited budget' feel about it, with the acting not as expected from the known actors.

4 out of 5 stars Very good film.......2007-05-07

Event Horizon is a very good film spawned from a unique idea. The blend of sci-fi and horror borders on genius. It was equally original and terrifying. I like the idea of having a futuristic film involving space travel that doesnt involve a ridiculous story about aliens. Lawrence Fishburne is outstanding in this movie. I think it's a must have for any intelligent person who appreciates a movie that is outside the realm of typical American cinema. This film can be appreciated even if you dont like sci-fi or horror. It's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Event Horizon.......2007-03-20

This is probably one of the scariest movies of all time. Sam Neil at his best. You've got a great script mixed with awsome special effects. This movie is just all around pleasing, and I recommend it for any library.

5 out of 5 stars The average person has no idea what quality is........2007-03-05

This review will be used interchangeably for a few titles. Event horizon, The darkness (Anna Paquin), And Jeepers Creepers. These are all excellent in one way or another, have good production values and acting. Jeepers has the best movie monster creation of the last 20 years. And the darkness has a great story and a solid non happy ending. Event horizon has excellent acting by Sam neill and Laurence fishburn and a truly creepy story. The bottom line is you see reviews for movies like these and Wes Cravens They for example where many people give them 2 star ratings while going on and on about The grudge or the ring 2 or house of wax, Blair witch 2 and Ring around the rosie (one of the worst and most pointless movies Ive ever watched.) This just goes to prove once again that the average person refuses to think and doesnt want a movie that might require any thought to follow. Originality is punished by the masses because clever things make them feel dumb.

As a primer on up-to-date scientific theory about the nature of the universe and our place in it, Cosmic Voyage is visually sumptuous and just plain fun. Shot in the mind-blowing IMAX process, this combined live-action and computer-generated production has (even in video format) an immensity of scope befitting its grand subject. Beginning, lyrically if unexpectedly, in Italy's magnificent Venice, Cosmic Voyage draws inspiration from airborne perspectives on the city's famed network of canals and streets, leading to further appreciations of dense systems in nature. From the subnuclear to the physical limits of the known universe, Cosmic Voyage explores a resonance between all things while making sense of such inscrutable phenomena as the birth of stars and planets, black holes, supernovas, etc. The marvels of cosmology are rarely so accessible as this. --Tom Keogh

Description

Cosmic Voyage mixes ground-breaking computer animation with cutting edge science to give us a sweeping view of the universe. A "cosmic zoom" extends from the surface of the Earth to the largest observable structures of the universe, and then back down to the sub-nuclear realm - a guided tour across some 42 orders of magnitude. Cosmic Voyage explores some of the greatest scientific theories, many of which have never before been visualized on film.

A must see film. The content is great, the images are great, Morgan Freeman's narration is great!!!! It's one great experience!!!!
I ABSOLUTELY recommend it to EVERYBODY, and especially to those that are curious about our universe, from the tiny particle to the great galaxy, and the progress of our means to understand it, science.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifull cosmic voyage.......2007-03-16

It's a amazing and Beautifull mode for a scientific presentation. Specially recommended to children and kids, and adults too.
Is a poetic history, from Big structures of the Universe until most little atomic structures. Easy to understand and context form.

5 out of 5 stars Not too detailed but accomplishes (fantastically) it primary goal..........2006-07-12

and that is to whet the viewer's interest reminiscent of more detailed mini-series like Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" and Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Origins." The series is concise and, very early, provides an excellent point of reference (literally) for those without any background regarding the universal and atomic scale.

Morgan Freeman comes through, as always, with his narration in a manner that provides an even and well paced presentation of the macro- and microscopic world. And while he doesn't have the trance-inducing voice of James Earl Jones, he skillfully manages to hold your attention even between the segments of the program that are nothing but spellbinding, which brings me to another point.

The images and computer generated sequences are done very well with especial care taken to faithfully represent the true scale and detail of the cosmos. The music fits well and affords a nice emotional complement to the eye candy. I'm sure many will agree with me that the best part of the entire program is the ultra quick zoom-in from the superclusters (largest scale of video) to the quarks comprising the neutrons and protons of the atom (smallest scale). My only complaint concerning the zoom-in (and the whole video for that matter) is that the camera seems to "back up" during the zooming. This takes place (33min.5sec. into program) when the camera comes upon a tree, into its leaves, into a leaf's veins, AND SUDDENLY!!, you're coming upon a creek with reeds, into the reeds, into a drop of water on the reed etc... An obvious editing mistake.

The mistake notwithstanding, this is an excellent video that quickly, though not rushing-ly, engages its audience---not with the intention to explicity educate on all the details so much as to introduce the viewer (in a very effective way!!) to what big and small really are.

No pretenses. It is what it says it is. A Cosmic Voyage.

2 out of 5 stars This movie didn't quite make it, I'd recommand something else..........2006-01-22

This movie does give viewers a general idea of the universe, in a very conservative sense. It only contains material and topics based on traditional big bang theory. Personally, I disagree with alot of ideas presented in the movie. I think since this movie is relatively new (2002) and not created back in the 70's or 80's, it should atleast contain new discoverys and new theories such as Super String Theory. Therefore, I do not recommand this movie if you are seeking to learn new knowledge, as far as I can tell, the movie is based on stuff we knew back in the 80's. However, I would definitely recommand the following: (1)The Elegant Universe (by NOVA,PBS) and (2)Origins (by NOVA,PBS) Both are very very good!!

Description

Richard Todd delivers a thoroughly winning performance as Peter Marshall, the Scottish-born minister who became Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. While still a boy, Peter wants only to go to sea. But as a young man he experiences a profound awakening which leaves him with the unwavering conviction that he has been called upon to do the Lord's work. He completes his religious training in the United States, where he presides over several congregations. A compelling speaker who believes religion should be fun, Marshall inspires young people to renew their interest in the church, and his ministries prosper. Eventually, he becomes pastor of the prestigious Church of the Presidents, in Washington D.C. and is asked to serve as spiritual guide for the Senate. Co-starring Jean Peters as Marshall's devoted wife, Catherine, "A Man Called Peter" is the deeply moving tale of "a man and his close friendship with God"

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of sermons with a bit of sickness.......2007-06-02

I saw the movie A MAN CALLED PETER when I was young and recently thought I should own the DVD and listen to the recording of a sermon by Peter Marshall that was a special feature on the DVD. There are plenty of sermons in the movie itself, including a sermon for the cadets at the naval academy in Annapolis on December 7, 1941 delivered before the attack on Pearl Harbor but emphasizing how meaningfully death could become our own world in a way that this world never will be. Peter Marshall was chaplain for the U.S. Senate, where he offered daily prayers that strove to be relevant to the kind of things that happen in Washington, D.C., from 1947 until the heart attack which killed him in 1949. Seeing the movie in a theater as a child, I was impressed by the idea that people who work hard are bound to die young and go to a well-deserved rest. I have certainly not been working hard enough for anything like that to happen to me, but I can appreciate this movie as an intellectual exercise in reflecting the spirit of the times in which the United States became a great power but faced mounting confusions about how to remain one.

On a personal level, Catherine Marshall is a major character in the movie, and she was author of a book that the movie is based on. At the beginning, she is merely a college girl going to church and listening to sermons, but remembering much more than most of us are capable of. That part of the plot reminds me of some themes of the `somebody's miracle' CD which Liz Phair released in 2005. The ironic first song, "leap of innocence," includes the dreadful lines, "I had so many friends in rehab. A couple who practically died. Anyone can tell you were my instrument. He said, I understand you. You want to play me." God and the Marshalls triangulated that theme marvelously.

One of the characters in the movie, a Senator Harvey, thwarts the plans of the timber interests who want to create a few more millionaires by clearing some forests, when he votes against a land bill to save thousands of farms that could have been destroyed by floods in subsequent years. It is nice to know that people making movies in 1955 were smart enough to include a few lines about facing the wind, like the second song on the Liz Phair CD about `wind and the mountain,' where she sings, "You're gonna right another wrong. And sometimes I am inspired. You're gonna raise your hand and say I don't understand. And there are days when you get an answer. There are days when you find your answer."

The movie includes a sermon on Elijah telling the chosen people, "Choose to serve the Lord." A little fire from heaven helped the people at Mt. Carmel make that choice, and sarcastic comments about the 450 prophets of Baal who could not call down fire from heaven certainly helped Americans learn how a super power could act on a good day, when the future seems like nothing but easy cakewalks. We have built an incredibly complex military base for carrying out whatever destructive tasks we can imagine, but have been lacking enough foresight to figure out what we will do when the people we borrowed money from ask us to actually pay for it. As Liz Phair put it:

And the wind that I'm in
Screams on me
Screams on me
Howls around me
Howls around me
And I feel like I am a naked man
I've got nothing and no one
In a stranger's land
And the wind will do me in.

5 out of 5 stars A Man Called Peter.......2007-05-26

Richard Todd played an awesome roll in his portrayal of Dr Peter Marshall. My family and I would recommend this film to anyone who needs to be inspired to go on to bigger and better things in life!

5 out of 5 stars A Man Called Petter.......2007-04-03

This is a very inpirational movie. Knowing it is a true story makes it even more so. It is well done. I watch it over and over. As one of the Special Features, is one of Peter Marshall's actual messages. It is awesome. He truely was one of God's gifts to the world.

5 out of 5 stars Great family film.......2007-04-01

In this day and age where movies use bad grammar and as much foul language as possible, not to mention the sexual inunendos and explicit sex scenes, this movie is truly a treasure. It shows the love that the Marshalls had for each other (without having to see everything that happens between a man and his wife) and sends a powerful message that God is truly in control; no matter what happens in our lives. The movie is excellent for a family night viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-03-18
