Description

Coach Nash (Gary Cole) is one of the most popular teachers at Tate High School. When he pays special attention to Amy (Nicholle = Tom), a fourteen year-old freshman, she is flattered - until he crosses the line by seducing her. Soon the rumor mill is in full swing and Amy is too ashamed to confide in anyone. The principal dismisses the suspicions because of the coach's importance to the football team. His behavior toward Amy becomes increasingly erratic and he even threatens suicide. Finally, Amy breaks down and confesses the truth to her mother (Mary Kay Place). Coach Nash pleads guilty and receives a jail sentence for his actions. But, Amy's parents feel the school system should be held responsible for failure to protect their daughter from this predator. With the help of an attorney who shares the same convictions, they are determined to set a precedent to protect other children in the future. Indecent Seduction is a captivating tale inspired by true events, featuring outstanding performances from Gary Cole, Mary Kay Place, Nicholle Tom, Mac Davis and Alyson Hannigan.

5 out of 5 stars We are BOTH in this movie.......2007-03-26

My husband and I loved this movie. It was filmed in our highschool back when we attended. I am one of the brunette cheerleaders and he is the redhead with the letterman jacket who glares at her car toward the end. Fun Fun. Anyone who attended the real "Tate" highschool will enjoy this film.

5 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-19

I saw this movie on tv and thought it was really good. I think the acting was great and why is someone giving this movie 1 star justt because they didn't receive their items? Disregard the previous users 1 star and give the movie a chance, especially if you like the Lifetime channel movies (which remind me of extended after school specials). Good one!

5 out of 5 stars The Light-hearted makeup wars.......2007-06-08

This movie is a wonderful, light-hearted look at Mary Kay vs. Beauty Control and the personality differences of their founders. It's fun EVEN for MK and BC Beauty Consultants if they don't take themselves too seriously!

Definitely a FUN girlfriends movie! However, keep in mind that neither Mary Kay nor Beauty Control had any input into the making of this movie. Additionally, the film makers took about 35 years of activity and portrayed it as though it all happened in just a couple of years. That's Hollywood!!

4 out of 5 stars Battle of Mary Kay Wins the War on Sublety.......2007-01-12

I really enjoyed this movie. It is rather cheesy, but then so is Mary Kay, Inc. As a former (and reformed) Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant, I was able to watch the Seminar scenes with blinders off. What a lot of flash with no substance. This movie nails the hype that drives the Mary Kay and Beauty Control "independent" sales force. I recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys seeing so-called professional women reverting to high school level shenanigans in pursuit of "the dream", complete with a 1960 dress code.

4 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect Casting.......2006-05-28

The most impressive thing about this film is how well the various roles were cast. Shirley MacLaine has never been one of my favorite actresses, but in this film she really IS Mary Kay, one of the more complex personalities on the American business scene. The film does a good job of presenting those, often competing, complexities while at the same time remaining funny.

The staging is also impressive. The story takes place in Dallas, and all of the interiors look like they came directly from the Horchow catalogue -- Where Too Much Is Not Enough.

The actors and actresses do a superb job of affecting the Dallas accent, a wonderful combination of "Upstairs, Downstairs" (mostly Downstairs) and "Hee Haw."

All in all, this film is a hoot, especially for anyone familiar with Dallas.

5 out of 5 stars Shirley Maclaine Wins the Battle For Mary Kay.......2005-07-28

Shirley Maclaine earned every gold inch of her Emmy nomination for playing Mary Kay, the American Makeup Queen! Having been born & raised in a rural Southern mountain community, I knew my fair share of Mary Kay reps & this movie completely captured the madness that surrounds the Mary Kay Clans. The movie is a fabulous mix of camp & autobiography. Shirley does a fantastic job at letting us get a real glimpse of the Mary Kay behind the makeup & wigs. Parker Posey triumphs as the "cheerleading," rival. And I have never been a Shannon Doherty fan so I was completely impressed with how I was able to forget the "90210 Brenda," & the Shannon that's in the tabloids and totally buy Shannon as the desperate housewife that wants to be Makeup Queen! For some good ole fashion camp & some great acting pick up a copy of The Battle of Mary Kay!

3 out of 5 stars Troma's War, Troma's Bore?.......2006-07-05

Having become a big fan of Troma over the years, starting off with seeing "Terror Firmer" in 1999, I had always been intrigued by "Tromas War" the lost master piece.

Then I realised it wasn't so lost and I ordered it from Amazon.

I think the main problem I had with this film is that I was too expecting it to be a later Lloyd Kaufman piece, brimming over with the barely contained insanity that I so adored in "Citizen Toxie" and the aforementioned "Terror Firmer". But what I found when I watched "Troma's War" was a far more sedate piece.

Thats not to say "Troma's War" is boring, thats pretty far from the truth. It just has a far more traditional flow than you'd expect and the budget gave it a sheen that made it feel as though it's a missing link between a "normal" film and a Troma movie.

I'm not sure how to conclude this review, I guess if you like alot of other Troma movies you'd do well to watch this. If you're not so big on Troma movies or you don't know what the hell i'm talking about this movie is pretty much a gateway drug.

Well thats me done.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-05-27

This movie was very different from other Troma movies. This is a full fledged war movie, It has excellent special effects and a good story. No wonder this Lloyd kaufman's favorite Troma movie. Despite the title the movie isn't set in TromaVille, The entire film takes place on a small island. A plane crash lands on this island, The survivers of the crash take action against a rebel base on the island. These rebels also confuse the survivers as comandos come to abort the mission. Action packed! Excellent Movie!

5 out of 5 stars Troma's War.......2004-07-08

After a Tromatic plane crash on an island somewhere off the face of Cuba, a few spirited Tromaville Citizens are about to find out the harsh reality of guerilla warfare. It is only a short period of time before the battle for life and death begins in one of Troma's ultimate masterpieces. If you like Troma, an interesting plot, or just a plain bloodbath, then Troma's war has it all. Though not the best Troma film, it is still worth getting. Unfortunately, it doesn't measure up to the wonderfully black standards of Terror Firmer, but then again, what could? It is still an amazing film, and a good storyline.

4 out of 5 stars Troma Does a War Flick.......2003-09-20

Why I continue to plod my way through Troma's catalog of schlock movies is a question not easily answered. "The Toxic Avenger" holds a special place in my heart because that movie was my first real gore film experience. Since then, I have seen many more films from Lloyd Kaufman's warped studio, and none of them ever really matches that first Toxic Avenger picture. If you are not familiar with Troma, they are a movie production company dedicated to releasing the worst trash films in cinematic history. The people at Troma actually revel in their reputation for bad taste through massive self-promotion in all forms of media. "Troma's War" shares attributes with nearly every other Troma film I have seen: atrocious and hammy acting, cheesy but gruesome effects, lame musical scores, pedestrian pacing, and tasteless humor.

The impetus for "Troma's War" is a plane full of civilians crash landing on a seemingly deserted island. Not many passengers survive, but those who do constitute a broad cross section of American society. You have a Catholic priest (who is a great singer!), a trio of rock and roll wannabes, a slimy businessman, a blind girl, the requisite hunky guy and gal, a Vietnam vet (who really gets into the war: he wears a necklace made out of human ears and has the best death scene in the movie), a British guy with a blowgun and poison darts, a few old folks, and a woman with a baby. The surviving passengers spend the first scenes of the movie just trying to figure out what happened and to map a plan of action. When hunky guy Taylor decides to explore the island, he discovers a roving band of soldiers armed with assault weapons slogging through the forest. All the survivors generally agree that this could be a bad thing, especially when they witness a band of armed thugs gunning down one of the defenseless passengers on the beach. Our heroes rapidly head for the hills, so to speak, in order to avoid the armed gangs looking for them.

As "Troma's War" unfolds, the crash victims discover that these soldiers on the island are actually armed mercenaries and terrorists training for a clandestine offensive against the good old United States of America. After some trite soul searching, the group of survivors decides to arm themselves and fight the terrorists in their own backyard. This decision takes on special meaning when the terrorists capture several members of the group and subject them to painful torture techniques, such as exposure to AIDS and throwing a flight attendant off of a watchtower. When our armed heroes liberate the prisoners and kill all of the terrorists, they move on to the main target: a base full of Cuban soldiers and more terrorists. As the enemy soldiers die in numbers that John Rambo would appreciate, the crash survivors also suffer a few casualties in the course of the war.

That's all there is to "Troma's War": several scenes of survivors bonding followed by lengthy battle sequences where people die en masse. Kaufman states in an extra on the disc that "Troma's War" used more squibs (little packets of blood placed on the body and set off with a small charge to simulate gunshot wounds) than nearly any other movie with the possible exception of Sam Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch." Kaufman may be right, but we don't get to see many of those squibs going off because the battle scenes are so poorly choreographed. It looks as though Kaufman directed his cast and extras to just run around and shoot, and we don't get to see much of the carnage in graphic detail because Kaufman and company didn't effectively use slow motion outside of a few "people on fire" scenes. Moreover, the squibs weren't as big as they could have been. I looked forward to blood packets the size of tennis balls, but alas, this did not happen. Overall, there is still a body count so high that it should satiate even the most rabid war movie fan.

Troma made this film in 1988 as a response to the hyperpatriotic, right wing war films like the Rambo series and "Red Dawn." At one point in the film, lead character Taylor waxes philosophic about how he found documents in the terrorist camp proving that right wing elements in America are working with the terrorists because they want to use the resulting chaos to increase their wealth and power over the common man. It's a class and control issue, laments Taylor, and it's up to them to put a stop to this terrible exploitation. Further evidence in this vein comes from the mouths of one of the terrorists, claiming that a campaign to destabilize America will cause the citizens to turn to mercenaries in order to restore the rule of law. I wish someone would one day write an article about left wing themes in Troma films.

The DVD version of "Troma's War" contains even more extras than a normal Troma release. There are interviews with nearly every person involved in the production, from the actors to the stunt people to the crew. The usual tour of Troma studios and intelligence test are here, as are four trailers for such Z grade numbers like "Sizzle Beach, U.S.A." More importantly, the movie on the disc is the unrated director's cut. "Troma's War" isn't the greatest Troma film ever made ("great" being a highly subjective term regarding Troma), but it isn't the worst one, either. Low budget movie aficionados should probably check this one out if they get a chance, as there is plenty of groan worthy material in the movie. I recommend this as a "rent, not buy" experience.

4 out of 5 stars Revolutionary propaganda never smelled so good!.......2003-06-20

This film turns the tables on the Bush/Reagan-approved "military chic" of the eighties, taking the Ubermerikkkan propaganda that was GI JOE and Rambos II and III and turning it around into a call to arms for the common man against the elites that opress us. As "out-there" as the bad guys (and good guys) seem in this film, you must keep in mind that they are all charicatures to show us how wall street will stab you in the back to protect his neck and pocketbook, how the church has had its tongue ripped out by the powers that be (though it sings on through the blood), and how the true American spirit (not to mention our children's free will) can only be saved when we seperate Military and Monetary powers. Even through the (once-again) EXTREMELY GI JOE-esque visuals, storytelling and soundtrack, this film uses powerful symbolism in the manner of Dali's "Le Sangre D'un Poete" and Orwell's "Animal Farm" to push us over the edge and into seeing what our (barely) free minds are up against. All great art is shocking at the time of release, dated as expired within three weeks, and (seeing how everything in this film is coming true) we will all be studying Troma's War in art school in fifty years tops! If you don't believe that, then you probably think our president was elected legally. Welcome to the Infiltration, I hope you brought a condom!

Steer clear of the R-rated version, as it has had not only its tongue, but also it's heart severed by the MPAA. Not a film for normal Tromites just looking for cheap thrills - THIS IS A THINK PIECE!*

    Description

Houston (Angus MacFayden) is a brash, sexist skirt chaser and publisher of a Playboy-like magazine who also thinks he's God's gift to women. When Houston's mother dies, she leaves her estate to his former girlfriend, Zane, (Penelope Ann Miller) who, it turns out, happened to later be his mother's girlfriend as well. This proves he knows absolutely nothing about women. Houston declares war between the sexes and goes about his chauvinistic ways by sponsoring an annual wet t-shirt contest. When the contest goes awry Zane teaches Houston that there is more to love than sex in this irresistible romantic comedy.

2 out of 5 stars Beautifully made ... Extremely biased and annoying.......2007-07-02

Nice documentary beautifully made. However it's very annoying to see someone being proud and showing off, or maybe simply justifying the slaughter of 250,000 thousands civilians (without accounting for the long term damages and army casualties). Why don't we see it the other way. Would we enjoy a Japanese documentary saying that it was the right thing to do to kill the same amount of US civilians by H-bombs or whatever, because there were no other way they could win the war?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent & low priced too.......2007-01-10

This DVD is very, very well done. I hesitated at first to buy a "bargain" DVD, because it's hit-and-miss with them; some are horrible quality. Well, this one is one of the good ones. No, make that excellent. There's no special effects, just reality, and trust me, the reality you will see puts multi-million dollar fiction like "Private Ryan" to shame. I'm not putting down Saving Private Ryan; I own that movie too. But truth is more dramatic than fiction. This movie concentrates entirely on the Pacific war; it only briefly mentions Europe and the Nazis in the very beginning. But after you see a few island-hopping beach landings, you'll forget all about der fuhrer. The music and editing is very well done, and they mix in interviews with American and Japanese veterans all throughout the movie. Best of all, it is fair and unbiased. At the end, when it came time to deal with the atomic bombings, I braced myself for another Liberal assault on the use of the bombs. It never happened. Instead, I was shocked to see, they discussed the atomic bombings fairly, with an equal number of arguments for and against, and left it entirely up to the viewer to make up their own mind. They did in this movie what the mainstream media fails to do on a regular basis: they presented the facts in an unbiased fashion and let the viewer decide. They showed the good that came from the bombs; the war ended early and saved countless lives. They also showed the bad; flattened cities and radiation victims with skin falling from their bodies. This DVD is an honest, well-made, unflinching look directly at the face of real war. It's unrated, but probably would earn an R rating. Definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars An important story.......2006-10-08

This moving and informative documentary tells a very important and often overlooked story, that of the WWII experience in the Pacific Theatre. It seems as though most people are very familiar with the events of the European Theatre and THE D-Day, but not so much with the bravery of those who fought in the Pacific, nor of the countless D-Days that took place on all of the islands in the Pacific. Although one can never compare what the two groups of soldiers went through, because their experiences were so radically different, in some ways it could be said that the young men and women fighting to liberate the Pacific had it harder and suffered even more casualties. A lot of the aging veterans got very choked up when talking about their buddies dying, or of seeing all of the dead, dismembered, and bloated decaying bodies of their comrades all over the beaches and bobbing about in the water. The film footage of some of those very bodies was particularly chilling, and the horrific shocking impact was even greater because it was in color (as were numerous of the film clips). It seems fair to say that most people think of the events of WWII as taking place in black and white because that's what we're used to seeing them shown in, but having them shown in the color they actually took place in really makes these events seem even more real and immediate.

This documentary also brings us the stories of Japanese veterans and civilians, some of whom have since made mutual peace with the Americans they fought against. While a number of the American vets said they still had no qualms about what they did (the African-American veteran interviewed even said he was so angry at Japan that he would have shot anyone, even a woman, child, or baby), some of them had more mixed feelings, either in hindsight or during the war itself. One vet said he never got used to killing the enemy, even though his sergeant told him everyone got used to it eventually, and another vet started crying when talking about how awful he felt for having taken the lives of young men who were serving their country the same way he and his friends were, people who weren't much different from them but for the fact that their governments were at war. As the vets who have become friends and made peace in their old age explained, they were fighting against another government, not personally against other people, the way all wars are really fought. Some of the Japanese vets also expressed sorrow over how they had to kill innocent people in the course of war, such as the pilot who regrets his role in Pearl Harbor, saying he could have accepted fighting in the war or carrying out an attack if the U.S. had declared war against his country, but it wasn't a fair fight to carry out a sneak attack like that. Also interviewed are some Japanese-American vets and their families, who faced double discrimination. When one of them came home after the war, he could only touch and speak to his family through the barbed wire of the internment camp. The African-American soldiers faced discrimation also; I was angered to hear the one vet saying the Navy Cross he had been awarded at the end of the war was taken away from him because of his race. He earned that decoration and didn't deserve to have it snatched away just because he wasn't white. The documentary ends with some of the surviving vets going back to the islands they fought at and meeting with young Marines today, kind of bridging the gap between the generations.

There are also a number of interesting extras, such as a commercial for the National D-Day Museum, an introduction by Stephen Spielberg, a photo gallery, some commentary by Tom Brokaw, and a featurette on the dogs who served with the Marines. These were family pets who were sent into the service because their people wanted to do their part for the war effort, and in many cases their people gave permission for the boys who'd been partnered with them to keep them after the war ended. The bond between the dogs and their human partners was an amazing thing, and these dogs were every bit as heroic as the human Marines.

Overall, this is a great disc, and serves as a great general introduction to the Pacific Theatre for someone not very familiar with the subject yet. There are enough fascinating and compelling subtopics covered for one to want to seek out additional and more specific material on them (such as women in the Pacific, Japanese civilians, the campaigns on specific islands, war dogs, Japanese-American soldiers, and the debate over the atomic bomb). Perhaps next they'll make a DVD on the Indian-Burmese-Chinese Theatre!

5 out of 5 stars The Footage Alone Makes It Worth The Buy!!.......2004-07-25

This is a must have for anyone even remotely interested in the battles taken place during our Second Great War. My only hang-up is that it doesn't include anything about the invasion of Europe, in that it is purely infromation and footage from the battles of the Pacific, and everything that led to it.
