Amazon.com
David Ward made his reputation on his original screenplay of The Sting, but his career as a director has been built on lightweight comedies filled with generous spirit and slight aspirations. King Ralph delivers on that level. After a freak accident kills every immediate member of the British royal family, a search of the royal bloodline uncovers an unlikely candidate: portly Las Vegas lounge singer John Goodman. How will this gauche, exuberant red-blooded American mix with the snooty aristocratic bluebloods? Blustery, big-hearted Goodman brings the common touch to the palace with the enthusiastic spirit of a beer-guzzling, burger-eating Everyman who hammers out a mean rock & roll piano--even at official functions. John Hurt plays his conniving rival, an overlooked lord who plots the King's demise, while Peter O'Toole brings quiet dignity to his role as the King's private secretary and guide through the maze of etiquette and diplomacy. Ward brings a distinctly American sensibility to the British setting--this is definitely slapstick over satire and Goodman is a veritable bull in the royal china shop. This is a modest underdog comedy where white hats and black hats are pretty rigidly defined, but Goodman brings a working class dignity to the role. Watch for Joely Richardson in a hilarious turn as a throaty foreign princess who puts the moves on Goodman. --Sean Axmaker

Amazon.com essential video

Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning 1995 Braveheart is an impassioned epic about William Wallace, the 13th-century Scottish leader of a popular revolt against England's tyrannical Edward I (Patrick McGoohan). Gibson cannily plays Wallace as a man trying to stay out of history's way until events force his hand, an attribute that instantly resonates with several of the actor's best-known roles, especially Mad Max. The subsequent camaraderie and courage Wallace shares in the field with fellow warriors is pure enough and inspiring enough to bring envy to a viewer, and even as things go wrong for Wallace in the second half, the film does not easily cave in to a somber tone. One of the most impressive elements is the originality with which Gibson films battle scenes, featuring hundreds of extras wielding medieval weapons. After Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky, Orson Welles's Chimes at Midnight, and even Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, you might think there is little new that could be done in creating scenes of ancient combat; yet Gibson does it. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling.......2007-06-11

How do you know that a movie is good? When you watch it over 1o times and get the same feeling as you did when you first watched it. This is definately thrilling ,none other like this. Mel Gibson is at his best in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Should be a classic.......2007-06-10

Twelve years and this film still holds up remarkably well. Mel Gibson, in my humble opinion, is a wonderful filmmaker. I remember being blown away in the theatre at what he was able to pull off. Seems the Mad Max films taught Gibson well. There are definite paralles to Wallace and Max. The fight for freedom is always a good fight and despite the gory end, Wallace was truely victorious. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Faith and freedom.......2007-05-22

Braveheart is obviously a great movie, evidenced by the reviews you can read here.

As I watched it with my son last week, I was struck by the role that faith plays in the story. In the opening scenes, Longshanks is described as a pagan king. Several characters pray and engage in other solemn religious rituals. Steven the Irish even has conversations with the Almighty, and believes he was sent by Him to protect Wallace. And Wallace believes that too. Before Wallace's torture, he prays that God will allow him to die well. His prayer is answered.

I reflected that this has been a theme in several projects that Gibson has been associated with. Patriot, We Were Soldiers, Signs, The Passion of the Christ.

I like most of the movies I've seen Mel in. This one is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-12

This movie is phenominal. The story, music, and cinematography are all amazing. If you love medeival times, this is a great pick. It is gorry, but it represents war in that day very well.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Hero Story.......2007-04-28

A Great Hero Story

In this life, the "good guys" very, very seldom win.

But by the Grace of the LORD Most High God, let them Die Well.

Something's wrong in the town of Santa Mira, California. At first, Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) is unconcerned when the townsfolk accuse their loved ones of acting like emotionless imposters. But soon the evidence is overwhelming--Santa Mira has been invaded by alien "pods" that are capable of replicating humans and taking possession of their identities. It's up to McCarthy to spread the word of warning, battling the alien invasion at the risk of his own life. Considered one of the best science fiction films of the 1950s and '60s, this classic paranoid thriller was widely interpreted as a criticism of the McCarthy era (that's Senator Joseph, not actor Kevin), which was characterized by anticommunist witch-hunts and fear of the dreaded blacklist. Some hailed it as an attack on the oppressive power of government as Big Brother. However viewers interpret it, this original 1956 version of Invaders of the Body Snatchers (based on Jack Finney's serialized novel The Body Snatchers) remains a milestone movie in its genre, directed by Don Siegel with an inventive intensity that continues to pack an entertaining wallop. Look closely and you'll find future director Sam Peckinpah (an uncredited cowriter of this film) making a cameo appearance as a meter reader! The DVD release includes an interview with Kevin McCarthy, and for the first time on home video the film is presented in its original 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A Story About One Man`s Resistance To Collectivism.......2007-06-16

The original version of The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is an absolutely wonderful tale of how one man first tries to save his community from falling into a collectivist society. When this fails he tries save the individual identity of himself and the woman that he loves. Then when she joins the collectivist community he is left with no other alternative but to escape from this community and try to warn those living in other communities.

This is a terrific story that very much captures the political and social environment of the time that this movie was made. I highly recommend The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Also if you enjoy this movie you might want to considering reading 1984 by George Orwell.

5 out of 5 stars A great Cold War classic.......2007-05-16

I bought this DVD intending to teach it in a community college film class, but they didn't have the funds so the class didn't get approved. However, I'm pleased as punch at the chance to own this gem of 50's SF film. To watch this film is to fully understand Cold War paranoia, and the mood of the US during that time. Also, it's one of the few 50's SF films that don't descend into VERY silly "special" effects. Worth watching repeatedly.

4 out of 5 stars Plants are not so "harmless" after all..........2007-04-24

This film horrified audiences in 1956. It still does. The idea of some plant, some pod-based life form assuming the identity of your mother, father, sister or brother, somehow transferring the consciousness of those so transformed into an emotionless shadow of their former selves is a disconcerting notion. This, the original version of the story, is especially creepy. Shot in black and white, the special effects are clumsy by today's standards but they still work. There's just something about fine tendrils reaching out for you while you sleep that gets under your skin (no pun intended). The term "pod people" has become a fixture in the vernacular of the free-spirited and is used to describe those brainwashed, robotic individuals who, promising bliss, blindly follow some bleak, emotionless, sheep-like dogma shared by all the rest of them; relinquishing individual freedoms for the sake of the greater good. These beings want you to conform, they want to absorb you; to make you one of them, to assimilate you for your own sake. Is there anything scarier than being absorbed by the group at the risk of our individualism? This film is as much a satire of social conformity as it is SF horror. It strums those sensitive chords of nonconformity in all of us with a sharp and nasty fingernail. Most of us rail against the absorbers; they scare us to death. In 1956, perhaps the safest way to express the sentiment was to do so metaphorically, with pods and soul-sucking tendrils: "They're after you, you're next!", Kevin McCarthy screams in panic at the close of the film. Just a few years later, though, and thanks to the 60's and all that free thinking, hippy-esque social change that accompanied those years, we could put up a cooler, more direct objection to the absorption, and today's highly tuned refrain is: "Not me, you pod-headed bastard, you." Pod people. Thank Jack Finney and his Collier's serial for the concept and Daniel Mainwaring for the screenplay -- a mere decade after WW II.

5 out of 5 stars Invasion of the Body Snatchers.......2007-04-04

This is the all time, great, original classic. The remake is .......ok
at best. Add this to your classic movie collection.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The First Is Still The Best.......2007-03-29

This is the original, black-and-white version of the movie. Unlike later movies that focus on gore, this one focusses on actual horror--the fear that one day you will wake up and the people you know will not be who they were, and you may not even know they are changed. Based on the book The Body Snatchers, it focusses on a small town doctor who begins hearing people say that their loved ones are not really their loved ones. From there he is introduced to a dead body that is slowly coming alive before his eyes, and a town...well, you should see it for yourself. This is first-rate speculative fiction, and a must-have classic for your film library.

5 out of 5 stars love all of them.......2007-06-08

these movies are great to watch with the whole family. my 11 and 9 year olds love charlie Chan. these old black and white mystery movies are great quality and well done

5 out of 5 stars Oldy but a Goodie.......2007-06-08

I am an old movie buff, especially mysteries. No need for all the modern tech stuff for enjoyment. This collection was great!

4 out of 5 stars Not epic classics but ............2007-05-07

In a word the Charlie Chan series of movies are FUN. The Warner Oland movies are a cut above the others. The often used (and often made up)Chinese proverbs quoted by Charlie provide a lot of humor. Even more humor is evident after Keye Luke was added. I found it interesting that several of the movies managed to work in some of the cutting edge technology of the day. i.e. The photocell timing at the race track, the FAX-like transmission of pictures. It is easy to see why the series was so popular in their day and remain so.

4 out of 5 stars Warner Oland's Charlie Chan with Great Special Features.......2007-05-06

Earl Derr Bigger's Charlie Chan was finally successfully brought to the screen by Warner Oland. This box set has Oland's 5th - 8th appearances as the detective. This set could be called Charlie Chan's world tour as he visits London, Paris, Cairo and Shanghai.

Like all detective serial movies, the plots are all different but they are all the same. Its just that Charlie has a classy way of doing things. He always does things with intelligence and style. Whether solving a case at an English country house, finding who has been forging bank bonds in Paris, who has been stealing the treasure from the tomb in Egypt or the murderer in Shanghai, Charlie / Warner always got his man.

But what makes this set special is are the special features. Three of the movies have featurettes about the origins of Charlie Chan and each is very interesting and gives great insight into the character.

The forth has a spanish language version of Charlie Chan Carries On. In the 30's the studios would make duplicate versions of movies for the foriegn markets, usually South America. These were made using the same sets as the English versions but with a Spanish cast. In this film they use a photo of Charlie's family but Oland is in the picture not the Spanish actor! (If you get Garbo's Anna Christie, it has the German version with Garbo but the rest of the cast replaced by German actors.)

These special features make this set better than just the films alone. Thanks for the extra content!!

5 out of 5 stars Charlie's back!.......2007-04-09

I've always loved the old 30's, 40's & 50's mysteries especially Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto and Sherlock Holmes. This set starts Warner Oland which in my opinion is the better Charlie between himself and Sidney Toler. To my knowledge, Oland made eight films and Toler made six. Set #1 includes CC in London, CC in Paris, CC in Egypt and CC in Shanghai. Each film has been beautifully restored and have never appeared any better. It's as if they were filmed yesterday. A must see! I own set #2 and Chantology starring Sidney Toler and featuring his six Chan films. I loved them all.

Paul Newman has his glorious youthful swagger in this southern-fried melodrama, which marked his first picture with Joanne Woodward (they married after shooting ended). The script is a melange of William Faulkner stories, although it appears more under the influence of Tennessee Williams and Picnic than the Nobel Prize winner. Drifter Newman catches the eye of schoolmarm Woodward and her father, a rural Mississippi bigshot (Orson Welles). This is not one of Welles's better moments; he appears to be conducting make-up experiments. There is some enjoyable flapdoodle along the way, in the Freud-meets-Gone with the Wind manner of '50s southern cooking, but the ending is embarrassingly compromised. The same production team would leave out the box-office concessions a few years later on Hud. A studly Newman justifies this description of his character: "I wish I was Ben Quick. He's got the whole state of Mississippi to graze on." --Robert Horton

Description

Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Orson Welles, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick and Angela Lansbury co-star in this riveting tale of life in the Deep South. Provocative and compelling, it simmers with sexual tension, bawdy humor and a powerful clash of personalities. When Ben Quick (Newman), a suspected barnburner drifts into town, he catches the eye of Will Varner, a tyrannical, intimidating patriarch (Welles) who decides Quick is the ideal husband for his spinsterish daughter (Woodward). But once the loner moves in, the two men lock horns, drawing Varner's family into a complex web of emotions and actions that leaves all of them changed forever.

4 out of 5 stars "Summertime, and the livin' is easy" Or The Long, Hot Summer with Young Hot Paul Newman.......2007-05-25

It was the time when they called him a young new star and it was his breakthrough to stardom, fame, and success. The moment Paul Newman's Ben Quick, rebellious and irresistible drifter enters a rural Mississippi town of Frenchman's Bend to stir up its women, puzzle its men and to catch the interest of Big Daddy Varner (Orson Welles, the ferocious force of nature seemed to have fun playing Will Varner and experimenting with make-up) the town richest and most powerful redneck who perhaps sees in Ben a lot of himself, the screen legend was born.

"The Long, Hot Summer" (1958) is based on five short stories and a novel by one of the America's greatest novelists and storytellers, the expert of Southern life, William Faulkner, and the film is a steamy, moving, often funny (perhaps, unintentionally) tale of lust, greed, jealousy, and larger than life personalities and their clashes. I guess I need to read more Faulkner's stories because I was surprised to see the film that is based on the works of the writer known for his heavy use of such sophisticated literary techniques as symbolism, allegory, and especially stream of consciousness, the film which linear narrative is easy to follow from the third person point-of-view.

Besides Paul Newman who was as talented as he was hot, his off- screen wife-to-be Joanna Woodward shines as Clara Varner, Will's intelligent, thinking daughter, the teacher in a local school whom her father wants to see married (and not just wants but takes certain steps that Clara does not like and feels offended by). The film was the first of many Newman's and Woodward's collaboration and it is not easy to recall the greater chemistry between two leads. Orson Welles dominates the screen in his every scene as expected. 21-years-old Lee Remick (Eula, Varner's daughter-in-law, sexy and innocent woman-child), Anthony Franciosa (Jody, Varner's overlooked and jealous son), and Angela Lansbury (Minnie, the woman who has her own plans about future that include a widower Varner in them) all add to the sizzling fun that "The Long Hot Summer" is.

5 out of 5 stars The Long Hot Summer.......2007-05-14

The original version with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and Orson Wells is one exceptional movie. Made in 1955-57 it is still just as rewarding to watch as it was then. A great love story and a dysfunction family that actually does have alot of love for each other. I can watch it over and over. Glad to see it in DVD format.

5 out of 5 stars You can't miss with this one ........2007-03-19

This is an excellent movie . Brought me back to a time when I was young and reckless . You certainly did a marvelous job putting it on a DVD .

Thanks to the people who made it happen and Amazon for their professionalism .

5 out of 5 stars Newman and Woodward - what else can you ask for?.......2007-03-09

TERRIFIC movie - Newman and Woodward sizzled. My husband and I watch this and we both think it's one of the best romantic yet gritty movies ever made. Each character/actor is a gem and the story is timeless. The only one I might like more is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. Same genre - great performances, great scripts, family realities.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and Sexy.......2007-01-20

Great movie with witty dialogue and wonderful performances. Having read quite a bit of Faulkner in my college days, the script seems to have combined the first in the Snopes Trilogy - "The Hamlet" - with some Faulkner short stories. The script is good, but I don't recall Faulkner being much for happy endings.

My Friend Flicka: This gorgeous 1943 family film stars Roddy McDowell as a Colorado rancher's son who takes a shine to a colt named Flicka and chooses to train her. The boy's father (Preston Foster) isn't happy about the idea: the horse is an offspring of a stormy mare who may not be right in the head. For a while, Flicka seems determined to prove the rancher's point, fiercely resisting young McDowell's efforts at domestication. But persistence and love win the day, and Flicka grows up to be a magnificent animal and friend. The film was shot by director Harold Schuster and cinematographer Dewey Wrigley as if for the ages, marrying such perfect elements as a Technicolor sweep of the beautiful Rocky Mountains setting with a wonderful story, plus McDowell's charismatic earnestness. Based on the Mary O'Hara novel, this film was popular enough in its time to inspire a couple of sequels, though the original best stands up as a perennially worthy adventure tale for kids ages 5 and up. --Tom Keogh

Thunderhead, Son of Flicka: A sequel to the wildly popular, heart-warming children's classic My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead stars the original winsome young Roddy McDowall as the horse-lover against all odds. The sequel is every bit as touching, involving, and misty-eye-inducing as the original film. Thunderhead, a headstrong albino colt, is the son of the mare Flicka, and McDowall's Ken McLaughlin sets out to find out what this wild thing can do. Thunderhead, when given his head, can fly as though winged, so Ken decides to enter Thunderhead in some horse races. But it becomes clear that Thunderhead can fly only if he's free. A tragedy threatens the sweet world that Thunderhead and Ken have created, and only that magical love between child and animal can overcome the stumbling blocks. Thunderhead, Son of Flicka is a worthy successor to the original film, and a touching family film for horse lovers of all ages. --A.T. Hurley

Green Grass of Wyoming: The final installment in Mary O'Hara's landmark horse saga that includes MY Friend Flicka, The Green Grass of Wyoming is a worthy valentine to the love of horses and the wild America they represented in the mid-20th century. Robert Arthur replaces Roddy McDowall as Ken McLaughlin, the boy horse whisperer who connects on a subliminal level with four-legged critters. The equine star is Crown Jewel, a harness-racing trotter for whom Ken has hopes of championships and financial windfalls. But Jewel has something else on her mind--love, for the stallion Thunderhead (star of O'Hara's second installment, Thunderhead, Son of Flicka. Arthur is a talented, charming successor to McDowall, and the breathtaking scenery and cinematography will charm even those film fans who aren't big horse lovers. (Charles G. Clark was nominated for an Oscar for best cinematography.) Burl Ives makes the most of his sidekick role as Gus, and Lloyd Nolan is sympathetic as Ken's financially struggling dad. Extras include a detailed featurette on the life of Mary O'Hara. --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars My Friend Flicka.......2007-05-21

I grew up wanting a place like the Goose Bar Ranch. I love it to this day when I can remember as a child wanting a horse like Banner. I watch it almost every evening when I get home from work. That is my relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars Great to have the originals!!.......2007-05-16

I first saw Flicka (the new one with the girl) on DVD. Great movie by the way! It seems to be a mix of the first 2 (original) Flicka movies in this set. Remembered seeing My Friend Flicka on TV years ago so searched Amazon & here was the whole 3 movie set. I ordered it and was very pleased with the fast shipping as well as the DVD packaging. The movies? They were all very good. I sat through all 3 over 3 nights of viewing. Trust me this one's a keeper....

3 out of 5 stars Great But Sound Is A Dissapointment.......2007-03-08

The movie itself is good quality but at some parts in the movie the sound is terrible, either to soft or too loud. You have to keep on switching volumes to hear.
Otherwise a good purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Family Entertainment - Yes........2007-02-23

I'm giving this trilogy 4 stars based on its viewability and enjoyability for the family to watch. However, being a fan of Mary O'Hara's books (I read these when I was about 7 or 8), I was very disappointed in the way the story line strays from the books. Perhaps I am being overly critical, if so, I apologize to those offended.
The scenery is beautiful. The cinematography is great. The story line in "Flicka" (disc 1) is a little closer to the book than the other two.
But what happened to the older brother? The competition between Ken and his brother Howard was very important. However, the story line stays relatively close, and the moral of the story is there. Ken learns a lesson about responsibility, but at the same time realizes the imprtance of believing in the decisions you have made.
In the seond dis, "Thunderhead", the panorama of the mountains and the cinematography are still great. Perhaps even better, and the story line doesn't wander too terribly far astray, but it does deviate. Again, the absence of the brother in this story completely ingnores the bortherly competition, and the maturing that goes with it. And disappointingly (and erroneously) the McLaughlin stallion Banner does not die. Hurts part of the story in the next book. Still, the maturing of Ken and the developing respect between father and son are quite evident.
In the third film "Green Grass", the original story line goes on vacation to far away places. Beaver Greeenway is an uncle, not a grandfather. The grandmother (who dominates Carey's life) is gone, and the brother is still missing. And what happened to Pete, the hobo Clydesdale? And where did all those trotters come from? They were supposed to be jumpers. All in all, a completely different story. Panoramic cinematography still great. Different actors still did a credible job.
After all of that, when I watched the movies, I still enjoyed them thoroughly just as I did as a youngster. If you are a real fan of the books, you may find yourself disappointed, so watch it for the sake of enjoyment, not as they relate to Mary O'Hara's novels.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Flicka Trilogy.......2007-02-15

For those of you who only saw the new film last year (I bought it with this sight unseen because it looked interesting and it allowed me to get my favorite free shipping deal) here's your chance to see the Original stories of Flicka and her son Thunderhead. These 3 films which I am told are pretty faithful to Mary O'Hara's novels of the same titles (I have them too but never read them). The main difference between them and the 2006 remake is that is the central character is named "Ken (rather thank Katy McLaughlin", well at least the kept the same name in the remake) and is played by a young Roddy McDowell in the first 2 films and Robert Arthur in the third. The reason he probably didn't do "Green Grass" is that the same year (1948) he was making the second big screen version of Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped. The first film was released on VHS years ago, and both the first 2 had been previously released on DVD to celebrate their 60th anniversaries. Unfortunately those discs are out of print, albeit some Amazon sellers are still offering them separately or together. But the copies in this set are exactly the same discs, except for the pictures on the jackets and the labels on the discs. The text on the back of the boxes and list of chapter stops (on the lists and discs) are exactly the same as the previous releases. This is also the only way to get all 3 (if you don't count the old copies) as only the first film has been re-released as a separate item (it also marks the first appearance of "Green Grass" on video in any way, shape or form). By the way, it was also made into the a short lived tv series in 1956 which I doubt we will ever see again. If you like the books and movies of Anna Sewell's Black Beauty and Walter Farley's Black Stallion and the 2006 remake interests (or interested you), get this set before they go out of print again.

One of the lesser-known satisfactions in Gary Cooper's career is this 1935 King Vidor film, an offbeat blend of romance, comedy, and tragedy. It begins in screwball territory: Cooper plays a novelist whose partying ways have stalled his career and made his new manuscript unpublishable. He and wife Helen Vinson like the high life (any resemblance to Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald is probably intentional), and she doesn't stick around while he tries to write a new book in a quiet Connecticut country house. The isolation puts him into proximity with a heartfelt young immigrant girl (Anna Sten), whose Polish community provides a subject for his new book.

If you think Cooper was a merely the High Noon guy, a lanky Western hero, this is one of the movies (among many) that dispel the idea: his utter naturalness is a gold standard for a certain kind of movie-star acting. Directing him on the set the first day, Vidor worried about the star's mumbling and forgetfulness with dialogue. "Imagine my amazement," Vidor later wrote, "when I watched our first day's work on the screen and observed and heard a performance that overflowed with charm and personality." Anna Sten was another issue: the Russian actress had been brought to the U.S. with great fanfare by producer Samuel Goldwyn, because he wanted to have his own foreign Garbo/Dietrich under contract. Her cool presence failed to generate audience interest, and Goldwyn gave up on her after The Wedding Night. She's a problem, but Cooper keeps it going, and the movie itself is unexpectedly warm. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars Remarkable Acting - Unremarkable Story.......2007-07-04

I wasn't too impressed with the story of this one: A Manhattan writer named Tony (Gary Cooper), who made a splash with his first novel, is suffering from a long dry spell. Running out of cash, he and his wife head off to rural Connecticut where they can reside in his old family home rent-free. The writer gets inspiration for a new novel from his Polish neighbors. He also seems to fall in love at first sight with the Poles' daughter, Manya (Anna Sten). Tony's wife soon heads back to New York City out of boredom, leaving the writer to become more entangled with the Polish girl.

The acting is what makes this film worth watching: Gary Cooper, as usual, has a tremendous screen presence and Anna Sten is surprisingly good. I say "surprisingly" because she has often been accused of giving a "cold" performance that turned people off. It is hard to see why Hollywood gave up on her so quickly (this was her first and last major film). Not only did she possess a highly alluring beauty, but she was excellent in the role of Manya. [Looking at the other Amazon reviews, it seems that most of you out there agree with me on this last point.]

5 out of 5 stars Tender and Mature.......2007-06-18

This tender and mature film from director King Vidor is one of the great forgotten films of the 1930's. There is a sensitive and romantic light hanging over every frame, as though Vidor turned the lamplight low, letting its warm, soft glow set the mood for a rich story of tragic love.

Alfred Newman's lovely score and Gregg Toland's photography gave Anna Sten a chance to truly shine opposite Gary Cooper. Her Manya is sweet and endearing, and it is sad that Goldwyn misused her by trying to make her into another Garbo. She is both funny and charming, and with a gift for conveying emotion on the inside while attempting to mask her feelings.

Edwin Knoff's original story of a writer in need of more inspiration and a lot less boozing returning to his country home in Connecticut has real depth. It doesn't opt for easy answers to lives gone astray. Love's redeeming power, and our connection to the earth, themes running through many of Vidor's works, are important elements in Edith Fitzgerald's screenplay.

Gary Cooper is quite wonderful as the writer who can't get published anymore returning to his home, his New York wife in tow. Helen Vinson lends great support as his wife Dory, and makes her sympathetic even when she leaves Tony (Cooper) and returns to the city for a time. It will prove to be a huge mistake, bringing about tragedy.

Tony finds both solice and inspiration in his lovely Polish neighbor, Manya (Anna Sten). Her gentle presence gives birth to "Earth's Return," a novel he reads to her by the fire. Her smile and gentle laughter is soothing to his soul, and soon there is a deep and unspoken love blooming.

Standing in their way, however, is her traditional Polish family, who have arranged a marriage for her, and his returning wife, who really loves Tony but is not sure how to hang on to him. This is a rich and mature film of a man adrift and the love which brings his soul back to life, with tragic consequences. Filled with warmth and humor, there is a something real about it. A farewell reminiscent of the final scene in Borzage's "Three Comrades" is not soon forgotten.

This is a lovely film from the 1930's which has the maturity of foreign films made decades later. Perhaps only when "The Stranger's Return" and "H.M. Pullman Esq." find a release, will King Vidor's standing as an important figure in American film finally be realized. A tender masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars the wedding night.......2007-06-03

an author with writers block finds more than he bargained for when he has to go to the country to escape his out of control city life-style. he finds that he has other problems when he falls for a local girl. one of them is how to tell his wife about her.. it isn't easy. and thereby hangs the tale.

4 out of 5 stars Very Under-Rated.......2007-05-18

Over the years, I have repeatedly read that Anna Sten was not highly thought of as an actress. Perhaps something happened with that mysetery known as timing. If "The Wedding Night" is an example of her acting, the mid 1930s American audiences missed something. I think she is superb in this role and has a wonderful doomed chemistry with Gary Cooper. The film itself has a terrific look, as do a number of Goldwyn's films from this period. They appear like handsome leather bound novels in motion. Ralph Bellamy turns in his usual superb performance and captures the essence of these Polish immigrants as a pragmatic people. It's easy to dismiss them as cold and humorless but, to be fair, they most likely, as other immigrants of that time, came from countries where they knew only hardship and had to fight to survive. This clash of cultures leaves the viewer frustrated along with the characters, as the screenplay intends, and "The Wedding Night" elicits a very rewarding viewing experience.

5 out of 5 stars Very touching story.......2007-03-15

This is not one of Cooper's most well known films but it is a very good one and deserves more attention. Cooper is an author who has run out of money and ideas so he and his wife retreat to an old family farm in Connecticut. There he meets Anna Sten who is the daughter of Polish immigrants that run a tobacco farm. She breaks his writer's block and he decides to write a story about her hard working family. Meanwhile his wife has decided to go back to New York city as farm life is not for her. Cooper and Sten fall in love but unlike movies of today there is no graphic sex scene as they do not consumate their feelings. Instead their love is shown very cleverly and sensually through glances that last a little too long and sweet gestures like Anna cooking for him and taking care of him. Her father however has plans for her to marry Frederik played by a young Ralph Bellamy. Frederik discovers that Sten and Cooper are in love but decides to marry her anyway because of the land and house he will get as part of her dowry. This movie has an unhappy ending but it is very fitting for the piece and only adds to it's depth and realism.

On top of this being a very good film it's also a chance to see a young and very handsome Gary Cooper. Anna Sten was quite beautiful also but this was her last major picture as for some reason she just did not "catch on" with the movie public. She is very good in this film however and you won't be disappointed if you check it out.

There's nothing original in The Scorpion King, but this derivative action franchise gets off to a rousing start by cleverly stealing from a lot of better movies. Capitalizing on his brief cameo in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. World Wrestling Federation star the Rock) stars as Mathayus, an Akkadian assassin in the age preceding Egyptian pharaohs, who vows to avenge his brother's murder by an undefeated warlord (Steven Brand) prophesied to become the desert-ruling Scorpion King. Their battle for supremacy comprises most of the film's brisk 95-minute running time, punctuated by comic relief from Mathayus's obligatory sidekick (Grant Heslov), romance with a beautiful sorceress (Kelly Hu), and alliance with a massive Nubian (Michael Clarke Duncan) on the eve of their climactic showdown. There's no rhyme or reason to the film's depiction of ancient civilization (the costuming is particularly ludicrous), but the Rock demonstrates adequate action-star potential, and director Chuck Russell (The Mask) wraps it all in a slick, professional package. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars So bad it's actually lots of fun.......2007-06-18

This isn't the type of movie you watch to gain a greater understanding of human nature, it's the type of movie you watch when you want to zone out for 90 minutes & just have fun. While there may really have been an ancient King named Scorpion, this movie is among the most historically inaccurate flicks I've ever seen. The fighting styles are wrong, the peoples are wrong, the times are, the weapons are wrong, heck the costumes are wrong & so are the horses (stirrups didn't arrive until the mid first millenia AD). The dialogue at some points is just awful, but through it all the actors never take themselves too seriously and The Rock is able to pull it off. I enjoyed this movie not because it makes an attempt at authenticity, but because it simply doesn't care and goes out to enjoy itself. Thats what makes this movie fun.

3 out of 5 stars Bad Acting By Cast Members!.......2007-04-06

"The Rock" can't act! Some of the other characters weren't that great either in terms of their acting abilities, but "The Rock" was the worst offender. Basically, this is my only gripe with this film--- Poor acting performances by the cast!

Otherwise, the action, stunts, costuming, make-up, special effects/computer graphics and storyline were all fine.

4 out of 5 stars Scorpion King- movie.......2007-03-21

I ordered this movie for a friend but I watched it before I gave it to him. It is not my kind of movie but I did enjoy it. The production was quite good. Some of the acting could have been a little better.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fun Film.......2007-03-12

I like these films, and this oe is just as good. Fun, a bit campy and good action.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly surpasses mediocre, I guess........2007-01-25

The plot is utterly formulaic, and "The Rock" has all the acting ability of a cinder block, but this movie isn't totally boring.

I watched these two movies years ago, and it still hasn't lost it's charm. Both movies bring out real emotion, values, and kids will have a wonderful time singing along to the songs and watching. I highly recommend these DVDs to people of all ages.

3 out of 5 stars Prince is better than King.......2007-04-07

I bought this duo hoping that the quality I had seen in Prince of Eqypt would also be in King of Dreams. It turned out that Prince of Eqypt rates a 5, while the King of Dreams is ~3. My kids have enjoyed both movies though!

This well-packaged 1983 remake of the French comedy Le Jouet features two legendary actors in an unlikely pairing. Richard Pryor (Live on the Sunset Strip, Stir Crazy) plays a down on his luck writer who is talked into taking a job as a plaything for the spoiled rich kid of billionaire Jackie Gleason (The Hustler), who just can't communicate with his own son. Amidst a constant stream of abuse and slapstick adventures, Pryor manages to bring out the heart in both father and son and bring them closer together, as he fights to retain his own dignity. Director Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon) concentrates on the outlandish set pieces and wisely leaves the comic timing up to the two old pros, making The Toy an entertaining diversion. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars How do I love this film?.......2006-10-27

    Let me count the ways.

    1. They actually make a movie where a rich white kid buys a black man for a toy.
    2. They call the kid Master Bates.
    3. The kid now does adult films.

This is one of the greatest comedies of all time. All that separates this from being one of the top three movies of all time is if they added a scene with Richard Pryor eating a bucket of chicken while the kid has intercourse with an adult film star while wearing a KKK outfit.

In the early 80's, controversial African American comedian Richard Pryor (See No Evil Hear No Evil) was in top form. He was the most influential and electrifying stand-up comic, and one of the highest paid black actors in Hollywood (Pryor was reportedly paid $4,000,000 to appear in 1983's Superman III).

In 1982, Pryor agreed to star opposite the legendary Honeymooners star Jackie Gleason (Smokey And The Bandit), in a remake of a 1976 French film titled Le Jouet, which literally means The Toy in english. The outcome was a classic comedy, although hated by many critics, that is still enjoyed and quoted by people today.

The Toy is directed by Richard Donner (Superman), and also stars Ned Beatty (Superman), Wilfrid Hyde-White (My Fair Lady), Teresa Ganzel (Monsters Inc), and child actor Scott Schwartz (Kidco).

Pryor plays Jack Brown, a struggling and unemployed black writer who will lose his house if he fails to pay $10,000 to pay off his mortgage. Jack finds himself stooping down the social ladder trying to get any job he can get in order to save himself from getting thrown into the street. He finds a job as a cleaning lady for the Bates firm and is hired by Mr. Morehouse, played by Beatty. When local millionaire US Bates, played by Gleason, finds out that one of his cleaning ladies has a moustache, he fires him. To make matters worse, Bates's spoiled little bratty son 'master' Eric Bates, played by Schwartz, arrives in town for a week with his dad, goes to his dad's toy store, and picks out Jack as his toy because he made him laugh. Eric's insistence on keeping Jack and his dad's pampering reults in US negotiating a deal with Jack on the basis that he stays for a week at his mansion to keep his son company. US and Jack go on a collision course over different issues: the amount that Jack needs, US's degrading and racist new wife Fancy Bates, played by Ganzel, and most of all, what the film really focuses on, is how to approach and win over his son.

The Toy is a delightful movie despite what many regard it as being Pryor's and Gleason's low points. In fact, The Toy is one of the funniest films and an excellent pairing for both actors.

the best part of the movie os when jack works at th department store and decides to take a break and while doing so he gets on to the wonder wheel. while on the wonder wheel he pops it and trys to save it by wrestling with the inflatable toy and gets nowhere to sve it in time. then eric comes along to buy jack instead of the deflated wonder wheel.

3 out of 5 stars Ok blast from the past........2006-01-29

It's great to see Richard Pryor in action, especially when he was still in his prime. Watching Jackie Gleason was also fun but this movie shows its age. It has some laughs and some good scenes but the idea of the movie is pretty 80s and lame: Young rich white boy buys/rents black man for amusement and then they learn to love each other and young boy is united with estranged/cold father. Pretty average really.
I bought it just because I remebered it being funny when I was 12 but it's only mildly so now. It's good to see Pryor but thats about it.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Spin-Off.......2007-06-22

This movie is a spin off from the Mummy. They've done a good job with the concept. There is a good story line that keeps you wondering how is this going to work out. The characters are believable and likeable. It is a fun entertaining picture, something you can watch several times over.

5 out of 5 stars Fun film, great HD-DVD.......2007-05-14

Arnold had Conan, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has the Scorpion King. His first film as leading man and the Rock nails it, he's backed by an amazing list of co-stars (Bernard Hill "LOTR" and Michael Clarke Duncan "Sin City").
This movie calls back to the glory days of adventure films tongue-in-cheek and sword in sheath, pure popcorn entertainment. The HD-DVD transfer looks amazing, a must have for action/adventure fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Scorpion King Is Good With Popcorn.......2007-02-20

Okay, the movie storyline isn't the greatest, a good amount of the acting is cheeseball and the same can be said about the dialogue. The movie has been around for a while so most people reading this are already aware of these facts. But that doesn't detract from another fact, and that is The Scorpion King is just a fun popcorn movie. It doesn't take a whole lot of gray matter to appreciate the movie when just watching it should suffice for an enjoyable passing of time. Other than that, the movie's one really redeeming quality is the superb picture tranfer to the HD format. It's actually amazing the amount of attention(alliteration not intended) to detail it's been given...can't figure that one out at all.

If you would like a more in-depth review of The Scorpion King or other movies on HD DVD and Blu-ray, try highdefdigest (There is a dot com after the name, but Amazon won't allow it. I guess because maybe it would default to a web link). Their reviews are insightful and unbiased in the format war.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, great product!.......2007-01-05

I liked this movie for its action and ancient civilization plot. I could care less if anything is historically accurate. I like the tough characters, the plot of betrayal, the oppression of the weak. My only criticism of this movie is that many people, especially The Rock, act too modern. Many commanding people have to appear strong, tough, and superior. The actor who plays Memnon, the bad guy, does a good job at this.

As for the DVD, the HD DVD industry strikes again! I love the fact that it is making hybrid discs, with HD on one side, standard on the other, so you can build an HD DVD collection even before you get an HD player. And, unlike the Blu-ray, you get ALL the special features that the standard DVD has, even if it's not a hybrid disc. Blu-ray movies have erased many of the special features that the standard DVDs have. GO HD DVD. Fight Blu-ray!
