Bottle-blonde Cuban pixie Carla (Thais Valdés) has worked at the post office for five years. It isn't a friendly place and she's lonely (her family lives in the US). When she accidentally damages a piece of mail, she recreates the missive in her own words. It's a love letter from a student to a professor and Carla helps bring them together. Then she opens and rewrites other letters, so that their meanings become more clear (sure, it's illegal, but it gives her life purpose). Along the way, she finds love with Christian Bale-lookalike César (Nacho Lugo). Set in Havana, the award-winning Nada+, or Nada Mas ("nothing more"), is shot in eye-catching black and white with dabs of luminous color and touches of stop-motion animation. Though the secondary cast overacts wildly at times, writer/director Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti's feature debut reveals a keen eye and a vivid imagination. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Carla, a postal worker in Havana, fulfills her romantic longings by opening letters and rewriting them into passionate prose before sending them out again to their intended recipients. After her co-worker Cesar catches her, Carla turns her amorous talents on him. But the dictatorial new postmaster and her overexcited assistant begin to suspect something's up. Cuba's 2003 Oscar entry, Nada+ combines visual humor, poetry, satire of Cuban bureaucracy and a lighthearted love story.

You might not get a thrill from the sight of Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando throwing popcorn into each other's mouths, but that didn't stop this movie from gaining a new lease on life thanks to cable television and home video. It's a quirky romantic comedy about a mental patient (Johnny Depp) who claims to be Don Juan, the world's greatest lover, and he gets quite a few women to believe it's true. Brando plays the psychiatrist who tries to analyze his patient's apparent delusion, and Dunaway plays Brando's wife, who wants to inject some Don Juan-ish romance into their marital routine. Walking a fine line between precious comedy, wistful drama, and delicate fantasy, the movie gets a big dose of charm from its esteemed cast, with Depp delivering dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous from a lesser actor. This may not be a great movie, but it is guaranteed to put you in an amorous mood. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Johnny and Marlon together!.......2007-06-11
Any movie that has these two great actors in it is a must-see. Johnny Depp plays what is his sexiest and most romantic and charismatic role. Enough said.
Should have won the Academy Award.......2007-06-04
A rare combination of superb acting by nearly every member of the cast from cameo to lead,
superbly crafted scenes, editing and direction. A story of life, love and the pursuit of incurable
romantic optimism that can teach us not to take ourselves so seriously.
Enjoy it.
A Delightful Film.......2007-05-18
Don Juan Demarco certainly is not one of Johnny Depp's better roles but I cannot think of anyone who could have played his mental patient who believes he is (and actually is) the world's greatest lover. The film is a romantic comedy revolving around the overwhelming romantic effect Don Juan Demarco has just simply being around women and on his doctor (Jack Mickler played by Marlon Brando). As Don Juan relates his fantasy-like life and romantic awakening he influences his doctor to romance his wife, played by Faye Dunaway. It may be a bit of a stretch to see Marlon Brando as romantic at a weight of 300 plus pounds but there is a playful chemistry between Dunaway and Brando that is charming. The story of Don Juan's life is fantastic, including his duel with the father of the woman he has fallen in love with, being sold into slavery to a Sultana and living in a harem surrounded by women. What tension there is in the film centers on if Don Juan will be committed or released before his 10 days of observation lapse. In this, Dr. Mickler is certain that he will be released but faces opposition from all of the other staff doctors who would prefer to see Don Juan on medication.
The supporting cast turns in fine performances and includes Rachel Ticotin as Don Juan's mother. Overall this is a feel-good and entertaining film with some very good performances, and for that reason I am giving it 5 stars. I saw part of the movie on a cable channel and became caught up in the story enough to want to have a copy.
Don Juan DeMarco.......2007-03-29
What can I say - Johnny Depp once again proves what a fantastic actor he is.
Good show.......2007-03-26
Even though i think Johnny Deppp is attractive, i won't launch into a swooning ramble of him, much to the relief of many, i suppose!
A very magical movie with no sense of reality whatsoever. I would say the plot is so fantastic, its only a step down from harry potter. Romance and fantasy mix well, so casanova and romance fans will be much impressed by this film.

Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay by John Patrick Shanley (Joe Versus the Volcano) is a wonderful, gently satirical tale of an Italian-American family dealing with repression and dissatisfaction against a backdrop of cultural expectations. Cher is focused and funny as a widow who feels she should marry an older fellow (Danny Aiello), but then falls for his black-sheep brother (Nicolas Cage). Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia are perfect as her parents, and John Mahoney (of TV's Frasier) has a memorable, small role as a middle-aged man on the make who gets a lecture from Dukakis's character. Shanley's dialogue is comically stylized in a way that makes one appreciate how much words can inform an actor's performance. Taking its cues from him and director Norman Jewison (And Justice for All), the cast immerse themselves in a pool of hilariously operatic emotion. --Tom Keogh
Description
Fall under the delightful spell of Moonstruck, the mesmerizing romantic comedy from director Norman Jewison (Fiddler on the Roof) and OscarÂ(r) winner* John Patrick Shanley. Academy AwardÂ(r) winners** Cher, Nicolas Cage and Olympia Dukakis excel in this explosively funny tale which also features flawless performances by Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia and Frasier's John Mahoney. Cher is "devastatingly funny, sinuous and beautiful" (Pauline Kael) as Loretta, an unlucky in love Italian widow who finds romance through the intervention of the Manhattan moon. With her wedding to a close friend just weeks away, she meets and falls hopelessly in love with his younger brother (Cage)! Her dilemma and her equally passionate and hilariously eccentric family make for an unforgettable film you'll find "beguiling" (Time), "enchanting" (Newsweek) and "irresistible" ("Today Show").
Customer Reviews:
I'm stuck on Moonstruck.......2007-05-19
This is a delightful romantic comedy. Cher does a wonderful job of changing from a frumpy, overworked fiancee to a glamorous, sexy girlfriend of Nicholas Cage. Good performances by everyone.
DVD Quality.......2007-02-14
The first disc was defective. Returned it for replacement. The replacement is very slightly out of sync of video and audio at the end of movie. Shows poor quality control.
A different romance.......2007-02-12
A very good yet different comedy romance. Cher and Nickolas Cage are a great team in this movie!
One of my all-time favorites.......2006-11-10
I love this movie so much that I've watched it countless times and enjoy it every time I've seen it. I wore through my VHS copy, so it was time for a replacement. A very funny romantic comedy!
Great Watch........2006-10-28
I wanted to be Italian when I finished this movie.
Nick Cage did an award winning job at acting. Cher was unbelievable. Loved her. There were so many "stars" and stellar performances in this film that I can't mention them all. Sugar in champagne? Who knew?
I love that all ends up happy in the end.

Based on a retro-styled comic book hit of the '80s, this Disney film was meant to launch a whole line of Rocketeer films--but the series began and ended with this one. That's too bad, because this underrated Joe Johnston film has a certain loopy charm. The story centers on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest, but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp. --Marshall Fine
Description
The discovery of a top-secret jetpack hurls test pilot Cliff Secord into a daring adventure of mystery, suspense, and intrigue! Cliff encounters an assortment of ruthless villains, led by a Hollywood screen star who's a secret Nazi spy (Timothy Dalton). With the help of his actress girlfriend, the young pilot battles enormous odds to defeat his foes who are anxious to use the device in an evil plan to rule the world! The dangerous mission transforms the ordinary young man into an extraordinary hero!
Customer Reviews:
Great Movie.......2006-11-10
This movie is great - I wish a sequel had been made, as was originally planned. It would have been nice if the DVD had been anamorphic, but otherwise it is a great product.
Great for me!.......2006-11-05
I always liked this movie, a simple idea with a great out come. A good story of good verses evil, with a cool strap on rocket. Now i get to enjoy this movie when ever i please.
Terrific entertainment.......2006-08-23
(4.5/5 stars) This is a fantasy film set during World War II, with the Nazis chasing jet-propelled backpack technology that will enable their airmen to land in enemy territory. There is even a mock Nazi propaganda film to illustrate the awesome power of this new weapon. In fact, the film really blurs fantasy with reality, with appearances by W.C. Fields and Cab Calloway, among others. Timothy Dalton plays Neville Sinclair, an actor whose life bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Errol Flynn's. Fiction mixed with reality can be amusing because it offers an imaginative alternative to straight fiction and non-fiction. On the other hand, "The Da Vinci Code," "JFK" and the current Bush administration have all proven mixing fantasy and reality can produce downright ugly results. There is some very good action as The Rocketeer, played by the dashing and handsome Bill Campbell, eludes the Nazis and attempts to foil their plot. Jennifer Connelly is radiant as his love interest, Jenny Blake. This is the type of movie where gray areas do not exist; everything is either black or white, good or bad. Along with excellent sets, wardrobes, styles, etc., this aids the film in establishing its nostalgic, 1940s feel. This is a very fun movie for most of the family. Even though there is little objectionable material, some themes might be better suited for ages ten and up.
Corny, clunky, a deserved turkey of the early 90s........2006-07-15
The Rocketeer is the cinematic version of all the faux-Deco buildings that have been erected in recent years around Los Angeles, particularly the Miracle Mile area. It's wafer-thin nostalgia masks a chintzy story that can't stand on its own two feet.
The plotting of The Rocketeer is sound enough for adolescent fare. Unfortunately, the characters are totally uninspired and the dialogue atrocious. Worse still is the execution of the material. Every actor is miscast and thoroughly lacking in charisma. Bill Campbell -- ever hear of him anymore? He overacts every single scene. Timothy Dalton? Hammy. Jennifer Connelly is the only one to come out unscathed.
The direction is beyond weak. When The Rocketeer appears at the nightclub it is so poorly staged, so cloyingly "goofy" that it extinguishes the promise of anything remotely thrilling from happening. Add to this foul mixture a horrendous James Horner score... you get the idea. Still, some nice set design and an effective animated film-within-a-film make for a couple high points.
In many ways, what "Raiders" should have been..........2006-07-14
There's a great deal more attention to period detail in "The Rocketeer" -- the clothing, hair styles on men, even the language used, all are more reminiscent of 1930's serials than anything Spielberg did. Not an indictment of Spielberg's work, just a partial explanation for why I enjoyed "The Rocketeer" so much. It's a love letter to Hollywood and to early aviation, and if you actually know a little about these two subjects the movie makes a lot more sense.
One reviewer stated he found the concept of Nazi spies and soldiers in Hollywood hard to believe -- yet the German Abwehr did drop several spies by parachute into the West country of England. All were ill-prepared and captured almost immediately, but clearly the idea was out there. As for soldiers, note that the Hindenberg carried Nazi soldiers regularly, and in 1938 we weren't at war.
The same reviewer also found the giant assassin unbelievable, but this movie _is_ a fantasy, after all, and the character is clearly based not only on the appearance of the real 1930's and 40's actor Rondo Hatton, but on the kind of character he frequently portrayed.
The movie also gets props for using Howard Hughes as a central character, and not only a Zeppelin, but an autogyro as well, in the climactic scenes!

One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, this box-office hit cemented writer-director Cameron Crowe's reputation as "the voice of a generation." Crowe could probably do without that label, but he's definitely in sync with the times with this savvy story about a sports agent (Tom Cruise) whose fall from grace motivates his quest for professional recovery, and the slow-dawning realization that he needs the love and respect of the single mom (Renée Zellweger in her breakthrough role) who has supported him through the worst of times. This is one of Cruise's best, most underrated performances, and in an Oscar-winning role, Cuba Gooding Jr. plays the football star who remains Jerry Maguire's only loyal client on a hard road to redemption and personal growth. If that sounds touchy-feely, it is only because Crowe has combined sharp entertainment with a depth of character that is rarely found in mainstream comedy. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Something for Everyone.......2007-06-27
Hey, we all know JERRY MAGUIRE was a box office hit that put sultry Renee Zellweger on the superstar map and birthed one of the most famous lines in all of cinema. I've seen this little gem upteen times, enjoyed it even more with each viewing, and scratch my itchy head in amazement that I have yet to review it. Suffice it to say the review begins now. . .
Let's bypass the plot and the Big Three (Renee, Tom, Cuba); for me this movie ultimately succeeds by the fantastic performances of several of its second tier players. Jay Mohr is the guy you love to hate as Jerry's backstabbing former boss, Bob Sugar; Bonnie Hunt is the manhater with a heart of pure gold as Renee's sis Laurel. But Regina King tops them all as Marcee, loving and devoted wife of unappreciated and underpaid Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell. King is a vivacious, voluptuous goddess who absolutely steals every scene she's in, and while she steals it she exudes steamy sensuality. Rod Tidwell is one lucky dude.
So with the strength of its cast and its delightful plot, JERRY MAGUIRE has something for everyone. The Tom and Renee romance pleases the chicks, while the guys get off on the sports drama. Furthermore, sports enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy all the cameos made by sports celebrities and broadcasters. Bottom line: If you haven't seen JERRY MAGUIRE, by all means see JERRY MAGUIRE. Show me the DVD player.

One of the great film comedies of the 1990's.......2007-05-23
Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a sports agent who has an epiphany one day about having "less clients, less money". This soon leads to him getting fired from his agency and he his down to one demanding football-playing client Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and a secretary Dorothy Boyd (Rene Zellweger) who takes the plunge and comes with him.
Jerry Maguire is a great romantic comedy filled with warmth and humour and characters you really care about. Underappreciated at time of release this is actually one of the great film comedies of the 1990's.
Jerry Maguire is perfectly cast. Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr are simply brilliant and their interplay provides the real highlights of the film - making the most of a brilliant script. The film lags a little bit in the second half and Cruise and Zellweger's romance is not entirely convincing but this is still great compared to most comedies these days.
Sadly, the commentary included on the DVD with the director and his three leads is a waste of time. It is a self-indulgent, back-slapping session of the very worst kind with insights on the level of "I loved that scene", "you were great in the scene", "awesome", etc, etc. Very disapointing as I was interested in gaining some insights on the making of this great film. Hopefully in a few year's time Crowe will produce a proper commentary that befits the film.
The DVD does include a pretend Reebok commercial that is worth seeing with Cuba, but otherwise you could save your money and just buy the one-disc edition.
NOT JUST A CHIC FLICK!.......2007-03-25
This is a very good film and does not deserve the "chic flick" label it has been given(Even though it has one of the all time sappy lines in it "you had me at hello"....hoo boy)! I still dig the movie alot! One to watch again and again. The DVD is a good transfer.
Fantastico Film.......2007-03-22
This stinker won awards?.......2007-03-22
Is the academy deaf and blind? Two of the most un-sexy actors, Tom "Plastic" Cruise and Renee (scrunch-face) Whatzinger. Ya gotta be kidding me. Not only were the adult actors horrible, {with the possible exception of Cuba Gooding} the lispy litte buzz cut with glasses was too cutsey for words, oh, wait I thought of a word-nauseating. This whole story was contrived and thanks to the wooden acting of the main characters I didn't care about either of them. Enjoy!

Sound is mediocre; still a great movie.......2007-06-08
I bought this for my wife, for Mother's Day, to replace our videotape version which was not in the widescreen, theater layout. It is of course great to have Moonstruck now on DVD, in the letterbox format, but the sound seems to have been mixed a little low. I'm tempted to say the sound may have been also a touch less clear than our videotape version. So, one has to crank up the volume on the TV, which isn't such a big deal, but the next time you turn on the TV: Blam! It's blaring.
Moonstruck (Deluxe Edition).......2007-03-16
I purchased this DVD as a birthday gift for one of my dearest friends and she LOVED it -- she's a Moonstruck fan and absolutely loved the extra clips and movie info that came along with the regular movie it's self. Great gift for any Moonstruck fan!
"The Man brings the Moon to the Woman".......2007-03-09
Moonstruck is an entertaining film about love and traditional Italian family values. Cher makes the film fun with her Acadamy Award winning performance. Cher's character, Loreta; a widowed Tax Advisor rekindles her Love life and becomes engaged. While notifiying the rest of the Groom's family she gets 'Moonstruck' and falls in love with her fiance's brother. While dealing with her feelings and the love triangle she finds out about her father cheating on her mother in a scene at the New York Metropolitian Opera presentation of "La Boheme". Moonstuck is full of laughs and smiles that most of us experience during our mid-life. I strongly recommend this film to anyone that enojys an out of the ordinary love story.
Loved it.......2007-01-04
I love the movie I also like the xtra stuffs that came with it
of all the rom coms, this is the best one.......2006-12-27
Yes, Cher and Moonstruck are better than Meg Ryan/Nora Ephron's films including When Harry Met Sally. There's something about the visuals of the Meg Ryan movies that always bothered me (Pottery Barn magalogues bother me) but Moonstruck is EXACTLY what I like from the real estate to the brick lipstick. There are even lucrative plumbing contracting and bread operations - ooh!

"Give me what I want and I'll go away," demands the black-eyed, stocking-capped stranger Linoge (Colm Feore), who appears in a quiet island community on the verge of the worst storm in decades and brutally bludgeons an old lady to death. Tim Daly, the town sheriff and voice of reason and moral strength, locks up the quiet madman, but the deaths pile up as Linoge acts them out from his cell like a murderous mime pulling psychic strings. Stephen King, whose original teleplay is his best work for the screen since The Stand, transforms the sleepy burg into a Peyton Place of guilty secrets and criminal activity ripped from under a blanket of small town normality while the white-out of the snowstorm completely cuts them off from civilization. Director Craig R. Baxley nicely maintains an icy tension while the waiting game goes on, perhaps a little too long, before Linoge finally reveals "what he wants" and the drama turns into a struggle for man's soul in miniature. The more ambitious special effects and set pieces sometimes disappoint but are more than made up for in King's knack for turning the mundane into the macabre (the children's song "I'm a Little Teapot" has never sounded more sinister) and a few brilliantly realized sequences, the best of which occurs when townspeople are literally yanked out of existence while watching the storm. Storm of the Century is one of the most successful translations of King's brand of horror to the screen. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
The Choice Is Ours.......2007-07-02
Only one word can describe this film, DEEP!! This is an extremely spiritual movie. I enjoyed every minute. This movie proves that we all ultimately choose our path in this life. Outcomes and all. It teaches us about free will and the power that we have inside to beat any and all demons. Too many of us run to church on Sunday, screamin' HALLELUJAH!! and are living the most trifling lives. The people on this island were full of herendous sins. They had verbal faith, but not spiritual faith on a soul level. When the time came for their faith to take action and pull together as a unit in God's name, they all cowered. All except one, but that one could not do it alone. Anything in this world, whether good or bad, we must first consent to the allowance of anything to happen to us and/or through us. Nothing happens without God's permission. If we are part of THE ONE TRUE SOURCE, that means that God lives within us and we in God. We give the okay for things to happen. This is why free will is always a daily challenge. The knowledge of Spirit is not enough. Our belief(s) is what will sustain and ultimately save us. The Demon in this movie knew this. He knew these folks were simple/take the Bible literally morons and that their "faith" was none. For those whom have not seen this movie, I will not spoil the ending, but remember this: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And even the strongest link cannot hold the entire chain together. Nothing is stronger than the power of the Almighty. Whatever that means to each of us. Ponder upon the many spiritual lessons in this movie. Thank you Stephen King.
One of the most disappointing and dragging movies.......2007-06-26
The first 30 minutes aroused my curiosity. After that it moved at such a slow pace that I felt asleep at least twice. I also lost my interest. There's no suspense or horror in the remaining part.
Pet Sematary and Desperation are much more suspenseful and scarier.
Just didn't draw me in, predictable even for Steven King, and way to long. .......2007-05-31
The biggest problem I had with this movie is that it was so long. I knew exactly how it was going to within the first hour, why did it go on for almost 3 more. And, its the same King theme, a Demon/devil guy comes to town, plays people off of eachother, and leaves, usually changing the town forever from a Good/wholesome place to something different, something evil (eg Needful things, the Stand, deperation,). In this case, It came for "what it wants". Come on, you can't tell me you didn't figure out it was the Sherrifs kid...lets mark this character with AN ANGEL'S SADDLE on his nose, and a Demon comes to town...Yeah, tell me who he's after. Sorry Mr. King, I know you wrote this one for TV specifically, then came out with the script as a story, but this is not a high point. But, I do like many of his books, and even some of his more recent short story collections. But this one just dind't work for me. Worth a viewing, but no huge loss if you don't.
I loved it!.......2007-05-08
My favorite movie.. I love it! It arrived quicker than expected!
I was so tired of trying to watch it as a mini series on tv and missing most of it.. Now I own the whole thing on one disc.. Perfect for a cold and snowy night.. Stephen King is KING OF CREEPY!
I was so disapointed.......2007-04-02
I will be short because a lot of people realy like this move.
I however felt like it dragged out for ever and had no real suspence and the ending was -for me- a letdown not Kings best work in my humble opinion.

80s Horror Fun.......2007-05-20
Well, if you grew up during the 80s, you might remember this little gem of a comedy/horror film. This film used to play on HBO a lot, during the young years of HBO when it used to be nothing but movies and those who grew up during that time will sure remember it. Richards saves this movie a lot when the movie drags (fans of Richards will sure to pick it up im sure) and fans of Davis will enjoy it too , a very young Davis. Anyways, very funny and love the movie very much and good for that change of effect of gore to comedy on Halloween. Recommended!!
Great old movie.......2007-05-15
I love this movie. It is so funny and makes my day when I see it. One movie I can watch over and over.
Too dumb for me.......2007-03-29
Its often intriguing to watch famous comedians in their early days when they played supporting roles to bigger stars and had to make do with slapstick comedy. Such is the plight of Michael Richards (of Seinfield fame) in this movie. This camp comedy came out in the mid 1980s and highlighted three of the bigger stars of that time; Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, and Ed Bagley Jr. None of these three were top-notch comedians of their time, and it showed in this spoof of horror movies. Basically, two reporters are sent to Transylvania to generate a story for their tabloid newspaper employer. There, they encounter modern day versions of Dracula, Werewolf, the Mummy and Frankenstein, but with an interesting twist of course. Taking place in what should be Romania, none of the Transylvanian characters seem Eastern European by any stretch of the word, and hence the accents are really crappy. So with the acting in general. The DVD itself is very bare-bones; no subtitles even. All in all, a waste of money and time.
Funny Funny Funny.......2007-02-16
This is one of the greats that if you love comedy then you must own this.I laugh every time I see this movie. It will make you laugh till you can not stand it. get it get it get it that is what I say you won't reget it.
Ya can't help but love it.......2007-01-20
Despite the movie being somewhat of a mishmash, the individual bits make it a great movie if you want a good laugh. If you are over 20 you'll recognize most of the actors and if you're under 20 you may see why these people should be recognizable (well, it makes sense to me!)
It is one of those "Quotable" movies, so watch it with friends.

Classic good fun!.......2007-06-03
Originally called "Don't Tell Her It's Me", this is one must see movie. You and your friends will forever have the catch phrase, "I'm Lobo....." pop into conversations. Fun, fun, fun! Don't miss! (Harley lovers get a bonus!)
One of my Favorite Movies.......2007-03-19
I have always loved this movie. They changed the name to "Boyfriend School" so it took me a while to find it in DVD, but it's the exact same movie. It's a story with a lot of heart and exposes some of our silly notions about what really matters in the character of a person. I highly recommend it.
Most Enjoyable !.......2007-03-06
This movie is funny and entertaining. I viewed it previously when it was titled "Don't Tell Her It's Me". I believe that many of the scenes were shot in the Charleston, South Carolina, area - quite beautiful and historical. I'm so glad to have it in my library.
"Don't Tell Her It's Me" is such a better title than "Boyfriend School" . . ........2006-11-21
. . . makes it sound like it's a movie for pre-teens. That marketing agent should be sent back to the mail room. I saw this movie in my 20's and loved it. I found the VHS version after some hunting in my early 30's and I still love it. It's a good girly-movie with all the cheezy fun of a romance novel. (My husband actually likes it too - though he wouldn't exactly announce it.) If you like Shelly Long and Steve Gootenberg (sp?), you'll like this movie.
I Finally Found It!!.......2006-09-19
I had heard rumors that they were going to put out the movie "Don't Tell Her It's Me" on DVD. It has been one of my all time favorites!! The title change threw me though, but it's out and it's the same great movie I remembered!! Steve Guttenberg and Shelley Long are great in it. Now I can retire the VHS version of it!!!

Blondie's Deborah Harry has said that as a little girl, she had hoped Marilyn Monroe was her mother. The fantasy of having a celebrity parent is not lost on 15-year-old Dinky Bossetti (Winona Ryder), who is positive that the glamorous Roxy Carmichael is indeed her birth mother. The 1990 film Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael is more about Dinky and the town's obsession with its one claim to fame than Roxy, who really isn't all that famous. (She had a song written about her.) Little seen and seldom heard, Roxy works more as a poetic device here, causing the townspeople of her small Midwestern hometown to get all worked up about her return home and delving into why their worth is tied to the glamorous life Roxy represents. Ryder was in her late teens when she tackled this role, and no amount of loose black clothing or surly demeanor can mask her gamine beauty. Still, she manages to pull off the role of the class outcast, who in all probability would've had a better life if her parents hadn't stuck her with the oddball name of "Dinky." As she explains to someone who is confused by her actions, "It's not for you to understand, really." But Dinky is a stubborn teenager who is sure that her life would have been better if it turned out that Roxy is her birth mother. Indeed, it could've been. Roxy had an affair with local landscaper Denton Webb (Jeff Daniels) and gave the baby up for adoption exactly 15 years ago. Hmmm. As it turns out, Dinky was adopted, too. The film is pleasant and Ryder is a joy to watch, but in terms of offering a compelling storyline, it's not much different from your average movie of the week. --Jae-Ha Kim
Product Description
It's been fifteen years since Roxy Carmichael left Clyde, Ohio, for fame and fortune. Now the town is excitedly planning for her homecoming. Among those anxiously awaiting her return: the forgotten boyfriend who fathered Roxy's child (Jeff Daniels); Roxy's rival (Dinah Manoff); and Dinky Bossetti (Winona Ryder), a gifted but eccentric 15-year-old girl who feels secretly tied to Roxy's past. Sparkling with heartfelt humor and warmth, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael is a tender story of yearning and self-discovery. Of hopes, celebrity and dreams. And the importance of finding acceptance on one's own terms.

"It's good to want things".......2007-06-11
Winona Ryder stars as Dinky Bossetti, an awkward teenager in a small Ohio town called Clyde. The citizens of Clyde are in an uproar because one of their own, a woman named Roxy Carmichael, who left town 15 years before to take Hollywood by storm is returning for the first time. Dinky finds herself enthralled by Roxy and begins to ask everyone she can for information about the woman. Why Roxy is famous, why she left town, what she was like? The more answers Dinky gets to her questions, the more she finds herself convinced that Roxy is her long-lost mother and that when she comes back, she'll take Dinky back to Hollywood with her.
Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael came out when I was 10 years old and I remember being completely in love with it. Winona Ryder is at her best as this misunderstood teen misfit who doesn't fit in with the kids in her school nor with her own family and has to look elsewhere to make a place for herself. Dinky's obsession with Roxy gives her a reason to belong and finally makes her feel like she might fit in somewhere. Almost 20 years later, this film is still as great as it was when I was a kid. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys those early 90's films about misanthropic teenagers and their coming-of-age.

If you're a lifetime member of the Jennifer Connelly fan club, you'll be in the passionate minority of people (100% male) who won't care that this 1991 comedy is wallowing in its own oily puddle of lameness. The gorgeous Ms. Connelly is conspicuously put on display in this typically lightweight fluff from writer-producer John Hughes. Frank Whaley does his best to liven up the male-fantasy plot about a semi-nerdy teen who gets a night-watchman job in a variety store, only to find himself locked in overnight with the local knockout (Connelly), who's as rich as she is beautiful. She's also really unhappy with her home life and her bully boyfriend (Dermot Mulroney), so it's Frank's big opportunity to make his move as a sympathetic Romeo. Shallow and contrived, the movie does have its standard moments of John Hughes delicacy, and a cameo by the late John Candy scores bonus points for comedy. Still, it's clear that the movie exists primarily to satisfy adolescent lust--and with Connelly as the object of desire, this otherwise tiresome comedy is a triumph of wish-fulfillment casting. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Every teenager should watch this movie!!.......2007-01-20
I bought this movie for my 17 year old son. When it first came out my husband and I were very young ( all though married already) and even though it's a little corny, to me it's a classic teenage flick. Some parts are so hysterical. I would definately recommend anyone watching it especially teenagers. Great flick !!
A simple fun 83 minutes........2005-12-05
Though this film was released in the early 90's, it has a very 80's feel to it, compliments of John Hughes maybe. It's your typical teen comedy in many ways, just not one of the better ones. The plot was rather weak, though it did make me wonder what I would do stuck in a store overnight. Frank Whaley did a decent job as the town liar/geek/loser. Also the ending was fairly abrupt, and made you wonder what happened to everyone. However, there were two things in the film that were literally outstanding, and both of them were in Jennifer Connelly's tank-top. A must for fans of hers.
Endearingly Silly Comedy With Some Subtle Weight.......2004-11-23
The comedic story of two people locked overnight in a department store, one of them being Jennifer Connelly and the other being, obviously, one of the luckiest guys in the world. They end up encountering some rather incompetent would-be robbers in the process. Underneath the surface there are some kind of dark hints though. Connelly's character is in the store hoping to get caught shoplifting in order to embarrass her rich but scummy father. He's apparantly quite controlling and verbally abusive of her, and it's even implied that it might go far beyond that. The movie never really gets into that possibility beyond a glimmer, because it's chosen to be a fun, endearing romantic fantasy rather than a dark and disturbing drama, but the hint does add an extra dimension.
I think I'd prefer to think that the father is just an immense creep and not something far worse, because while that path could have made a really good drama, I like the really good comedy we got instead. People complain that this isn't serious; but it's a romance and where is it written that romances have to be all somber, stone-faced serious all the time? This romance is chipper, at times endearingly goofy, and wonderful fun, as the two leads (Jennifer and male co-star Frank Whaley) fall in love over the space of an evening. Cynics will scoff at that too, but good grief if you can't believe that something so cool could happen in one night in the movies, what hope do people have of love striking like lightening in real life? Not to mention the pluses of scenes like Jennifer riding the store's coin-opreated mechanical horse (with, happily, the inevitable bounce) or the fact that hearing her giggle is worth buying the movie alone.
Now that Connelly has finally received her rightful acclaim thanks to her recent movies, alot of people have dismissed her earlier stuff. To me, all through her career she's been brilliant. She's shined in the dramas everybody knows about (and a few that have slipped through the cracks, like "Seven Minutes In Heaven", one of her alltime best), she's shined in horror ("Phenomena", aka "Creepers"), she's shined in action/adventure like "The Rocketeer" and she's shined in comedies like "Career Opportunities". This diversity makes her one of moviedom's most valuable performers.
I don't mean to ignore the other performers; they all did fine jobs, but Jennifer was the main draw for me. Besides, I just don't think Whaley or the bumbling robbers would have looked quite as good in that white halter top.
As good as it is, it missed some opportunities to be significantly better, so it's refined to a strong four stars. The script was pretty minimal, and there were missed opportuities for humor, but the cast have made what they have work splendidly, and I fully recommend it. If you like this kind of comedic romantic fantasy fun, I also recommend the 2 "Mannequin" movies, the charming and enchanting "Amelie" and the heartpoundingly sexy "Dream Trap".
I like it for what it could have been............2004-04-18
I absolutely love this film- it's strangely endearing. and the best part is, it is most endearing for what it COULD have been. i think that's why i like watching it so much. the film was made during john hughes' fall from grace (his deal with the devil had to run out sometime) and the early 90's weren't as kind or interested in his fantastic dissections of 80's class conflicts and teenagers know best philosophy. career ops does run a tad thin but there was a great deal of potential. i think whaley's performance was really underrated. if the film had kept some of the scenes shown in the teaser trailer in 1991, he would have been even more likable. the problem is, hughes wants whaley to be a cross between Duckie in 'pretty in pink', ferris bueller and even the anthony michael hall char. in 'weird science'. this amalgamation doesn't do Whaley justice in what was probably a sincere attempt to create an original character of his own. His Jim Dodge is actually really interesting- a cool guy that doesn't trust his own coolness, a lower middle class son who doesn't know how to do well in his parent's eyes and an imaginative, articulate guy who can't quite escape midwest america. if the film would have been less about slapstick (please please please shoot whoever decided bringing in the mulroney brothers for their unecessary subplot that just ruins the film) and more about the dynamic between whaley and connelly, it could have been fantastic. connelly, meanwhile, is also let down by someone- the editor. she is fantastic- beautiful, articulate, classy, and graceful, but appears to be acting in a totally different movie than whaley. the scenes both about and with her father border on the uneasy. i have a feeling that in the original script she was really abused by the bullying dad, perhaps both physically and sexually. i could see it as a possibility with that character. we get a hint of this but then the movie shies away from it completely and we never quite get if its a joke or not (although the scene of connelly in profile with the father outside her door always made me nervous.) i really do like she and whaley together but both hughes and the editors don't seem to know what kind of movie they wanted to make- a slapdash comedy in a newly popular chain store, or a character study of a 'much cooler than his town gives him credit for' guy and the genuinely kind and rich girl who befriends him under strange circumstances. for this matter, we also (b/c of the editing) are never quite sure where connelly's afections lie- in liking jim dodge, or in getting the hell out of town. i just have a soft spot for this film and what it could have been if everyone involved in the production had agreed on what they wanted to make. the ending is atrocious and corny but the rest has promise. this is a great film for aspring filmakers and especially WRITERS to watch both for its good points but mostly for its wrong turns. A great deal can be learned from it.
Yes, It Definitely Has Jennifer Connelly In It.......2003-07-01
I watched this movie for the first time in many years the other day and had to come to this board to see the comments. Just as I thought, a lot of guys oogling Jennifer Connelly. And with very good reason. This movie was the worst in the John Hughes collection, but I can't tell you why because I didn't care a thing about the plot or the lead male character or the robbers or even John Candy, of whom I was a very big fan. I just know that Jennifer Connelly is an absolute doll in this movie, whether it be on roller skates or on a mechanical dime-store horse (especially a mechanical dime-store horse). In fact I think she comes across sexier here than she does in The Hot Spot, where she shows even more of her assets.
Alas, today Jennifer Connelly has gone the way of Calista Flockhart and lost the babyfat and become a serious actress, even carting home an Oscar, but her role in Career Opportunities will be the one remembered by fans years from now.
