Film fans might someday recognize 1997 and '98 as the years Hong Kong came to Hollywood. Stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li, and Michelle Yeoh all appeared in major Hollywood projects and directors John Woo, Ronny Yu, and Tsui Hark directed Face/Off, Bride of Chucky, and Knock Off, respectively. Another entry into this new era of entertainment is The Big Hit, directed by Che-Kirk Wong (who also directed Jackie Chan in Crime Story), executive produced by John Woo, and produced by Wesley Snipes. Mark Wahlberg leads this all-American cast in a played-for-laughs macho blowout. Rounding out the testosterone brigade are Lou Diamond Phillips (sprouting a gold-capped tooth and a dirty mouth), Bokeem Woodbine (who, according to this DVD's director audio track, wore extra socks where it counts), Antonio Sabàto Jr., and Avery Brooks. Wahlberg plays Melvin Smiley, a nice-guy hit man with an ulcer and a severe insecurity problem. He's short on cash due to the spending habits of his unsuspecting fiancée Pam (Christina Applegate) and his girlfriend-on-the-sly Chantel (Lela Rochon). He and his crew decide to do a little freelancing and cook up their own heist to make a little mo' money--specifically by kidnapping Keiko (China Chow), the daughter of a Japanese businessman whom they target for ransom. Little do they know her dad is broke and she's the goddaughter of their boss. The Big Hit has action scenes aplenty (one of the stunt coordinators worked on Woo's The Killer and Bullet in the Head) and the same cornball sense of humor as other films in the Hong Kong action genre. Slick pacing and over-the-top humor made this movie a miss with the critics but a fun ride for fans of Hong Kong-styled action. --Shannon Gee

4 out of 5 stars An average action flick that you can't help but to laugh.......2007-06-07

This is a ridiculous movie, which is why I liked it so much. It is a very stylish movie with the action scenes having lots of crazy jumps, flips, and explosions. In here we have Mel, played by Mark Wahlberg, who is a hit man who works as part of a crew for Paris. However he has money problems and stress that gives him a constant upset stomach. His main stress comes from his two women. His fiancé has arranged for her disapproving parents to come to stay with them for the weekend, while his girlfriend Chantel is determined to get every penny she can out of him. When Cisco offers him a job outside of Paris's contracts he takes it and kidnaps Keiko, the daughter of a rich industrialist who also happens to be Paris's goddaughter. Betrayed by Cisco, Mel finds himself with the hostage but also targeted by plenty of firepower.

I've seen this couple of times and fine it worthwhile. The plot is silly but could have worked, however the action scenes don't really have any character and are best described as functional rather than special. The director has chosen to give the film a constant energy and pace rather than work on giving the film it's own character or style. Some of the scenes hint at what could have worked in the script. Quiet scenes between Mel and Keiko show a character that should have been worked into the action better. Instead these are rare and make way for meaningless, overblown action sequences which also, surprisingly for Wong, lack a sense of character or excitement. The effects aren't as good as you'd hope and several blue screen bits are poor.

Wahlberg is likeable in a goofy innocent role as Mel. He does well with the action as well as the insecure character. Phillips is either bad or brilliant depending on your feelings about what his role needed. He hams it up so much that at times he's hard to take but he compliments the absurd vein of comedy running through the narrative. Woodbine is wasted despite an amusing running gag about his discovery of [...]. The biggest waste for me was Lela Rochon. In `Knock Off' she proved that she is talented and sexy enough to rise above a bad film, here she hardly has any screen time - another example of wasted talent.

However this is disposal more than anything else. It has enough pace and energy to fool you into being entertained and in fairness the time does pass quite easily. My only complaint is that the film's style goes overboard towards the end of the movie, watch it and you'll see what I mean. Overall this is an average action movie who's weaknesses outweigh any strengths it may have had at the time of writing the original script.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Hitman.......2007-02-01

This was really the first movie that you got to see Mark be a leading man. He really showed that he could carry a movie not only the action end of it but he showed that he can add humor to it as well.
I've seen all but 3 of his movies and i can seriously say that this is one of his BEST films!!!
My top 3 Mark movies would be:
1) The Big Hit
2) The Italian Job (he does some really hot driving in that movie)
3) Fear (he might play a creepy character, but he shows a lot of range with his acting in it)

5 out of 5 stars The Big Hit a Big Laugh!.......2007-01-12

I loved this movie the first time I watched it some years back and promised myself I'd see it again because apparently it was the LAST time I ever saw it on broadcast television, it was so long ago I can't even remember what channel broadcast it was; but I saw it and thought to myself "I love this movie." And always have up till the day I got it because now I can watch it over, and over, and over again and it still cracks me up everytime. With that aside and Mark Wahlberg being one of my most favorite male actors-- this movie was topnotch in the very element it was supposed to be, a hard-hitting action movie with some right down comedy. It's not a movie to be taken seriously, but not a movie to let you down either of its mockery-- top notch acting and reasons why Mark Wahlberg, as an action star actor can do comedy, unlike Densel Washington who's even asked Jay Leno on his show why he couldn't do comedy, the response was because Densel was just too serious to be taken lightly. Here though, whether this wasn't a role Mark fit ideally to some peeople's benefit of his other marks; I still think it was one hell of a role for him that he did EXTREMELY well as the soft-spoken hitmen who could do everything right but has the incredible turn of luck to always get the crap end of the stick at times.

Good movie.

Good laughs.

Good times.

Even my fiancee enjoyed it and she'd never seen the movie up till I showed her some days ago! Good quality movie worth its time and laughter appeal.

5 out of 5 stars One of my top 10 films.......2006-08-21

Every person that has reviewed this movie so far is an idiot.

This movie is the funniest thing I have ever seen. Plus it has Christina Applegate in it. And Sisko (Avery Brooks) from Deep Space Nine. What more could you want.

Moments that I still laugh about years after first seeing it are;

1. Lou Diamond Phillips when the phone rings. The use of slow motion is perfect.

2. Avery Brooks laying down the law to Lou Diamond Phillips when suddenly his phone rings at the worst moment. "Give Me That..."

3. Elliott Gould's speech at the dinner table.

I needed a gut transplant from laughing when this film was finished. A must see if you are still brave enough to smile in front of your feinds - unlike the idiot credit card shopping yuppies reviewing this film on here.

This is a good parody of mob/hit films. Four hit men kidnap a college girl without their boss knowing about it. It reminds me a bit of The Whole Nine Yards but it is not as good. It is funny at times and the cast seem to enjoy themselves.

3 out of 5 stars Super High Paramedics !!.......2007-02-16

I have to start saying that this is a serious movie involving Paramedics doing drugs while they're working (and of course, in their own time too).

It is very disturbing at times and makes you feel sorry and angry for the characters because they are completely out of control and this is a kind of work where the people's lives depend on this two persons...

This movie will leave you thinking and will stay with you after its over.

5 out of 5 stars Oscar-worthy performance from Todd Field.......2006-06-26

I was floored by this movie. Having spent seven years in various Washington state prisons alongside the disenfranchised casualties of the idiotic and doomed "war on drugs",I am no stranger to the deleterious effects of drug abuse and I thought this movie was one of the very few anti-drug movies that really got the message across without preaching or appearing to glamorize drugs. Jason London quite impressed me with his portrayal of a small town innocent corrupted by big city vices. But the film belongs to Todd Field; he gives an Oscar-worthy performance. From the minute his character appears on screen he mesmerizes; it's a live-wire performance that should have netted him more recognition; he is a phenomenal actor. It is a shame this movie isn't more well known. Its one of the most powerful and well-acted American films to come down the pike in a long time. The director, Scott Ziehl, shows a very sure hand behind the camera. This is a great film filled with humor, pathos and heart, plus its got a parade of cameos from everyone from Ron Jeremy to William Smith. See this movie. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Spiraling Straight Into Hell.......2006-03-16

This is a indie film about two EMT's. One of the guys is a rookie and all around good guy. The other guy is a veteran and burn out. Basically it's a story about how the veteran EMT corrupts the rookie. Drugs, voilence, more drugs, TONS OF DRUGS. Basically it's a sad story that's hard to watch. No one likes watching crackheads do drugs. The story is kinda weak, but it's still entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific plot, outrageous characters, moral dilemmas, wanton drug use--it is all here.......2006-02-21

Fresh-faced Tom (Jason London) is just out of college and ready to launch his medical career by moving cross-country to Los Angeles and working as an EMT. He's partnered up with veteran paramedic Jimmy, a man who has burned out dozens of partners in the past. Tom tries to walk the straight-and-narrow when Jimmy wants to drink beer in the ambulance and stop in a bar on duty. It's a natural progression for Tom to give in to drinking, to try some speed, and then to smoke some dope with Jimmy (Jimmy's rule is that smoking is fine, but one should never inject heroin). One can just imagine how life spirals out of control from there. Tom and Jimmy end up forming a modern-day Robin Hood team to score drugs and money for drugs. Do druggies have debates about morality and ethics? You bet.

The film is filled with outrageous and unforgettable characters. There's Bob, Tom's uptight roommate who is obsessed with the phone bill and his fish tank (darkly comic tragedy ensues when Tom is put in charge of the fish tank). Susie, the neighborhood speed freak, is a complete scene-stealer with her manic and paranoid monologues. Picking up the movie just to see her physical and verbal performance is worth it. And then, of course, there's Gramps, a delightful practical joker of a man who raised Jimmy and now lives out his days in a nursing home, getting dope from his grandson to support his habit.

The bottom line in this story is about coming in to your own, and taking responsibility for your actions. Anyone who loves drug movies will enjoy this, and anyone just looking for a good story might be put off by the excessive drug use, but the good story is under there.

4 out of 5 stars Derivative but worth the time.......2005-03-30

I have been trying to classify "Broken Vessels" ever since I watched it a few weeks ago. Is it a "message" film cloaked in dense drama? A typical Hollywood tale of excess and broken dreams? A redemptive tale? The answer is all three. Tinseltown loves to churn out these movies about some innocent backwoods rube moving to the big city only to find his or her dreams derailed by bright lights and the lure of the bottle and/or needle. These sorts of pictures treat us to roughly an hour or so of dangerous, out of control behavior before throwing in an ending that has the main character snapping back to reality and regaining control of his or her life. Usually the final revelation comes about due to some sort of tragedy, like a death, a fractured relationship, or incarceration. I think these films are supposed to be inspiring, the sort of movie that tells all the lost souls out there that it's acceptable to foul your life up because everyone gets a second chance to come clean and walk in the sunshine again. Or some nonsense like that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that "Broken Vessels" is a film most of us have seen more than once.

That's not to say the movie isn't any good, however. "Broken Vessels" introduces us to Tom (Jason London), a gullible rube who moves from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles in order to make a fresh start in the big city. He's also fleeing from the horrific memory of a tragic automobile accident that he caused while driving under the influence. So right from the start we learn that this chap has issues with controlled substances. In order to earn enough money to secure his own lodgings, Tom accepts a position as a paramedic at a company run by the demanding and shrill Chen (James Hong). Before he can hit the street, however, he must learn the ins and outs of saving people's lives. Enter Jimmy (Todd Field), the resident hotshot who seems to know everything there is to know about being a paramedic. We follow Tom's awkward attempts to learn the job; his worst mistake involves writing off an injured motorcyclist when the poor guy is only injured. Ouch! Actually, it's a tough job and Tom doesn't do too badly thanks to Jimmy's patience and instruction. Tom's partner seems like a nice fellow in spite of the fact that he goes through partners like a thirsty man goes through glasses of water. Our hapless hero soon learns why others consider Jimmy anathema.

Jimbo has a drug problem, a big drug problem involving primarily heroin but also embracing just about any illegal substance known to man. He also has a temper, as evidenced in a situation where he abuses an injured passenger. Tom can't believe what his partner does on a daily basis, and he agonizes over what to do. Then the answer comes: join him! It's not too long before Tom and Jimmy are regular bosom buddies, whipping around the city on calls while getting high as kites in their off time. They sit in a park bombed out of their skulls while Tom films police officers beating up people at a Hispanic wedding ceremony, rip off drug dealers on a regular basis, and steal stuff from the homes of sick people in order to support their habits. Fun, eh? Things get worse after Tom moves in with Jimmy. A basket case next door, Suzy (Susan Traylor), introduces the boys to the wonderful world of meth. Predictably, Tom also meets and dates a nice young woman named Elizabeth (Roxanna Zal) who rapidly falls by the wayside as the drug abuse escalates to insane proportions. The conclusion to the film is appropriately grim while offering the requisite chance at redemption. Or does it? Watch and see.

You will want to watch "Broken Vessels" despite its derivative qualities. First, the performances are marvelous. London, who I remember fondly from "Dazed and Confused," convincingly portrays a kid with a problem who soon finds himself in way over his head. Todd Field, who I don't recall from any other film, does a credible job as the unbalanced Jimmy. Just as Tom has his own skeletons in the closet that he must deal with, we soon learn that Jimmy's upbringing by a drug-addicted grandfather (Patrick Cranshaw) is just the tip of the iceberg when trying to fathom this man's behavior. Special kudos should go to Susan Traylor as the addled Suzy. She talks a mile a minute, bounces off the walls, and totally makes the viewer believe this is a woman destroyed by drugs. Everyone onscreen does such a great job with their characters that I almost forgot I was watching a film I had already seen a half dozen times before. You come to care about these guys and girls, and you actually hope they get the help they need before the inevitable doom swallows them up. I don't know if "Broken Vessels" got a theatrical run, but if not it should have received one. This is a solid film with solid performances that could very well end up a minor cult classic. Oh, and look for cult fave William Smith in a small role as an injured goon.

Sadly, the DVD doesn't contain any behind the scenes footage or a commentary track, at least not on the version I watched. We do get trailers for this film, "Oxygen," "Razor Blade Smile," "Phantom of the Opera," "Dance with the Devil," and "Relax" along with fairly in-depth filmographies for the cast and crew. So if your looking for a message/drama film where an innocent rube goes to the big city and finds self-destruction and tragedy only to come out wiser in the end, "Broken Vessels" should fit the bill quite nicely.

3 out of 5 stars A quirky black (romantic) comedy that does not quite click.......2006-01-21

This is a strange film and perhaps the simplest way to explain that is to say that Fairuza Balk and Debbie Mazur play sisters, which is easily believable given their complementary facial features, but they happen to be blonds. Making either one of them blond strikes me as strange so do it for both of them and you can square the strangeness. If you want more proof that this is a strange film, take into account that "Life in the Fast Lane" is the DVD title. Originally it was "There's No Fish Food in Heaven," which I can tell you actually makes more sense but almost by default since it really applies only to the film's punch-line.

This hybrid of a romantic comedy and a black comedy begins with Mona (Balk) dumping her boyfriend Jeff (Noah Taylor). He wants to get back with her so he comes up with the bright idea of having himself mailed to her in a giant box. What Mona might think about this act of quiet desperation becomes a moot point when Jeff ends up dead. However, this does not stop Jeff from continuing to talk to Mona, who is the only one who can see his spirit. Meanwhile, Mona is enthralled by The Stranger (Patrick Dempsey), who saves her when a gargoyle falls off of a church and almost hits her. The Stranger is devilishly mysterious (hint, hint, hint) and Mona keeps seeing him in the strangest places as he keeps trying to seduce her (on several levels apparently). Now if Mona could just figure out why the things she is painting keep coming true, because this is all starting to freak her out.

While Mona deals with Jeff and The Stranger, she also has to put up with her pregnant sister, Rosie (Mazar), Minister Pete (Jeffrey Jones), a mother who likes to not only do but also spell "decoupage" (Caroline Aaron), a car thief who is into poetry (James LeGros), and a transvestite dentist (K. Todd Freeman) named Stan (or Susie) who likes to seduce serial killers. So there is mondo quirkiness in this film written and directed by Eleanor Gaver ("Slipping Into Darkness") but it does not quite click. Still, I do like the place where this film ends up even if the path there is rather torturous and it becomes impossible to connect all the dots, at least for me. Then again, maybe this film, whatever its name, will click for you, in which case it would go up at least a star because if you are looking for a different independent film this would certainly be in the running.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but WIERD!.......2002-11-22

Any one that would want to watch this film or likes it is for no other apparent reason than the blued eyed beauty Fairuza Balk. Any Fairuza fan such as myself will love this movie. She is the only character in the film that is worth mentioning and the entire film revolves around her. This film is very bizarre. The plot is very strange and difficult to understand. Watching this film the first time can leave the impression that there is no plot, but there is. Despite the bizarre events and wierd characters in the film, there is actually a plot with a meaning. After watching this film for the third time I finally understood the meaning behind the plot. After understanding the bizarre meaning to the film, you can actually come to appreciate the film even more. Fairuza fans that are out there, this is the film for you!

5 out of 5 stars Cult film in the making?.......2000-07-18

RENT BEFORE BUYING, this movie is not for everyone! Picked this up at the video store because it looked cheesy. It was not. It was the most bizarre film I have ever seen. It is sure to end up as a cult favorite. The cover of the video is misleading - looks like a cheesy 80's teenager type film - BUT IT IS NOT. I would not, however want to watch it again. I am pretty sure I would lose my mind. Oh what a great pun! The movie is called Life In the Fast Lane. I am pretty sure I would lose my mind. Get it? IF not - don't bother to see this movie (with a reduced dog). Very weird, hypnotizing. Patrick Dempsey is a very convincing seductive devil - without speaking a word.

5 out of 5 stars Fairuza rocks!.......2000-07-15

This movie is awesome! For any Balk fan this is a must-see; she had me laughing out loud at some parts! Very watchable, amusing and funny movie. It's a little cheesy sometimes, but you won't lose your interest!

      Customer Reviews:

      Moments that I still laugh about years after first seeing it are;
