fun and educational.......2006-09-29
My 3-yr old son loves this DVD for its catchy songs and lively footage. He watched it every day for the first couple of weeks, and still requests it regularly a year later, so the whole family has got most of the songs memorized. I like that the DVD shows some footage from the wet season in Africa, not just the dusty dry season that you usually see. And they talk about predators and prey in a kid-friendly way, exciting but not scary. We also like the "Hanging with the Primates" show that comes as a special feature, and the interactive quiz and animal sounds features. It's a very polished, engaging DVD that our whole family enjoys.
Boring for my 2-year-old.......2006-07-05
My 2-year-old animal junkie son got bored about 20 minutes into this and started asking for "Elmo's World." Some of the footage is pretty old, and it doesn't have the same polish as the Baby Einstein dvds he's used to.

If Crocodile Dundee and Indiana Jones got together to make an animated feature-length film about Babar, they might come up with this. The tale of Babar's first days as the boy elephant king are a wild action-adventure ride that recounts Elephantland's victory in a war against the rhinos. Some of the action may be a little too heavy for the little ones at whom the film is aimed--elephants are enslaved and their village is burned--but they are set against the broader landscape of Babar trying to do the right thing. Several musical numbers, including an amusing one that makes fun of red tape, help give the film an upbeat pace. Yes, Babar does save the day, but he does it in such a spectacular, eye-popping way that even the adults watching will sit up and pay attention. --Valerie J. Nelson
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic movie for kids.......2007-01-20
This movie is a fantastic movie for kids, and even somewhat entertaining for their older siblings to watch along with them!
I bought this movie for my younger brother to watch after having loved it so much when I was a toddler like himself, so I therefore cannot understand the critical reviews below as I didn't see any abnormal behavior besides excitement as he began to progressively finish the film. Since watching the film, we've bought him Babar books as well, which have only made him interested in learning about French culture and history in general.
Babar: The Film, is perhaps controversial only because of the fact that it contains some violence. However, this is minimal - more violence would be contained in a newspaper than in this film whose villans are based on a combination of Nazi Germany and the Confederate United States, all of which your child will learn about in the next few years of his life (if he hasn't begun to already) unless you happen to live under a stone. I highly recommend this film to anyone who wants a good, interesting film for young children - don't believe the violent hype.
Childhood memories returned!.......2006-03-15
As a child I had a vast collection of disney, universal, and other cartoon movies. None stuck out as much as this one! A movie inspired by the cartoon inspired by the drawings that were drawn by. I enjoyed watching it every time it came on TV, and would watch the movie over and over. I can quote it like most people can quote the lion king, because it has very catchy tunes and they stick with me even if I haven't seen the movie in almost 10 years.
Aside from being so memorable, it has a loveable cast of animal characters that are all full of personality and very humorous. It was a very touching story for it's time and it's a shame it never got as popular as the several good disney movies that were released.
I recently purchased this movie because I wanted to remember more of my childhood and it really helped. I used to watch this movie after elementary school and sometimes with friends.
I highly reccomend this movie for all those who watched Babar as a child and miss your childhood. Or... for those of you with kids, get this for them! You won't regret it!
Too scary for some little ones.......2005-11-04
My almost-three-year-old son loves Babar books, but couldn't handle the violence in this movie. If you want to give this one a try, preview it before sharing it with your kids. It definitely didn't work for us.
Violent, old-style violent cartoon.......2005-08-18
I bought this movie for my son's 3rd birthday. How I wish I had watched it first! I gave it one star only because the elephants were actually cute and if they cut out the violent parts, it could have been a neat little movie. I was expecting the death scene of Babar's mother, but was unprepared for the horrible war/captive/slave whipping scenes of the rhino encampment. There is an awful chanting reminiscent of Lord of the Rings in Mordor - entirely too much of a medieval, dark, purgatorial atmosphere for young children to be watching. The rhinos whip the elephant slaves (Celeste cries out: "Babar, they're SLAVES!") Now, why does a child need to see elephant slaves being whipped and dropping -- presumably dead -- in their harnesses? And why do I want my child to hear the rhinos chanting hellishly: "Hail Rataxes!" with rage-distorted faces like some Gregorian klaxon sounding. The rhinos verbally abuse and taunt the elephants while beating and whipping them. What is that doing in a children's movie? The crocodile scene (crocs terrify Babar and Zephir in a lake, fiercely snapping w/ evil and angry eyes) reminded me of the type of characters and animation from the old, old Warner/Disney cartoons, angry, mean little characters who beat on one another -- the types of characters that are -- and rightly so -- very politically incorrect nowadays. It was so disappointing and just really sub-par and violent and so unnecessary in a world where we can choose Disney Pooh/Tigger/Roo or Sesame Street, Between the Lions, or Clifford or Caillou. Stick to what you know and don't expose your children to violence. You will see a marked difference in their behavior/aggression if you weed out all violence from their viewing habits. All day after viewing this, my son walked around screaming like the rhinos and throwing his toys to the floor to "punish" them yelling: "halt, who goes there?" with a mean, angry countenance like I have never seen before. This, I don't need.
A little too scary and aggressive for my kids.......2005-04-20
Unfortunately, I watched this movie with my kids instead of BEFORE my kids. Had I seen it in advance, I wouldn't have shown it to them. My kids are 3 and 5. My 3 year old found the movie pretty scary - alligators chase Babar, Celeste's mother is put in jail, rhinos chase Babar, throw spears, fight with swords, launch flaming rocks at the elephant village, etc. My 5-year old didn't find the movie too scary, but spent quite a while after watching the movie conisdering why the rhinos wanted to attack the elephants AND looking for someone to have a mock sword fight with. So, I can't recommend a movie that left one child a bit scared and the other ready to go to battle.

dreadful.......2007-05-17
This is a dreadful film which shows little understanding of the playwrights original intention and particularly the humor inherent in the original script. Instead the director and cast go for mugging, pratfalls and a wild and now hopelessly outdated "60's" feeling -
Disappointing.......2006-07-25
One would think that the combination of Eugene Ionesco, Zero Mostel, and Gene Wilder would be a guaranteed success. Sadly, such is not the case with the American Film Theatre production of "Rhinoceros" as committed to film in 1974. While the theme of maintaining one's identity as everyone else goes along with the herd (originally a metaphor for Nazism, McCarthyism, etc.) is intact, Ionesco's text has been so altered that is is destroyed. Here it becomes subject to slapstick, poor unfunny added situations, exaggerated performances, and clumsy direction. The film has been criticized for "staginess," but that is not the real problem. It makes use of camera movement, external sets, etc.; it just has no rhythm. It is a trial to get through it--certainly not the case with Ionesco's original, either on stage or as read to one's self. Gene Wilder is always diverting but the character he portrays has been so tampered with that it's just unpleasant and tedious. Karen Black's character is an embarrassment as are all the other minor characters. The only bright spot in this mess is Zero Mostel, whose fifteen minutes on screen are amazing, his transformation from a dandified fussbudget into a destructive rhinoceros an acting tour-de-force; done without makeup, it encapsulates the essence of the piece. But that's it: the other ninety minutes are dreary and awful.
The DVD is very well transferred, but the extras are disappointing: e.g., an "interview" with Zero Mostel is simply text to be read frame by frame, and an article about Ionesco and the play is simply an on-screen text repetition of the liner notes. There is a very long interview with the director, in murky sound; after seeing his incompetence demonstrated in this film, no one will have any desire to see him drone on about it.
Misunderstood Classic!.......2004-02-06
I first saw this adaptation in a college film class and have been trying to get a VHS or DVD since. Yes, it is supposed to be funny, but funny odd not funny ha-ha. Absurdist theater takes normal behaviors and exaggerates them so we see how weirdly we act and how distorted our values sometimes are. The character Zero Mostel plays is fastidious in his morals and attire, but even he changes. The character Gene Wilder plays resists to the end, but has to admit the sound of a rhinoceros is stranglely compelling. Are our civilized behaviors just neurotic expression or are we really superior to animals? Oh, by the way, I do find this movie ha-ha funny. But maybe it's a matter of taste.
Hilariious Americanized Ionesco.......2003-09-14
One of the great things about this DVD is that it includes an interview, taped in 2002, with the film's director, Tom O'Horgan. (He was the guy responsible, along with Galt McDermot, for the original Hair on Broadway). Among other things, O'Horgan talks about the conversion of the original Eugene Ionesco play into a cnematic version, giving great credit to the screenwriter, Julian Barry.
And with good reason. While Ionesco is one of the great absurdist playwrights, his sensibility is decidedly European. This means that the sense of humor expressed in the original play would very likely fall on deaf (American) ears, to a large extent. What the screenwriter has done is to essentially Americanize the dialogue, making it truly hilarious in many scenes.
And of course it helps to have a great cast. The two leads, Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, are perfect for their roles, especially Mostel who is funny enough to make you micturate in your trousers, if you catch my drift. Seen first as a man overly concerned with appearance and manners, he descends, in the course of the film, to the level of the titular creature.
The story is of a small town which is beset by a bizarre plague, if one can call it that--the transforming of humans into rhinos. Ionesco was commenting on the radical changes occurring in society as the Cold War became a reality--meaning, more than anything else, as people had much more to be afraid of than they did before. Fear makes us lose our rationality, become less human. Even become rhinoceri.
This is a really funny film that is just as good now--maybe even better--than it was when originally released in 1974. In supporting roles, Percy Rodriquez and Joe Silver are especially good--staunch representatives of corporate America. Karen Black does a great job as a sexy woman who Stanley (Gene Wilder) works with and is smitten with and eventually anguishes over as he is the sole remaining human in a town full of rhinos.
Much, much better than you might think. Definitely recommended.
A movie about the absurd.......2003-07-27
Stanley is a bored, alcoholic young man who feels disconnected from the rest of society. His best friend John is contstantly trying to help him to fit in and get over his feelings of awkwardness. One Sunday morning, while the two are at a restaurant, a rhinoceros rampages through the streets. Soon, Stanley notices more and more rhinoceroses and begins to realize that everyone in town is turning into them. Determined not to change, he confronts John with the problem only to watch his transformation in a rhino. As the rest of the world changes, including Daisy, the woman of his dreams, Stanley desparately tries to transform, but realizes that he can't and that he won't.
This is a good adaptation of the absurdist play by Eugene Ionesco and changes the setting from a small French town to a big US city. Wonderful performances by Gene Wilder as Stanley and Karen Black as Daisy; and a standout performance from Zero Mostel as Stanley's friend John. Tom O'Horgan's direction is definitley unique, making it feel as though the viewer is watching a stage play. The only drawback is the bad '70s music that doesn't fit.
The DVD has some great extras including an interview with Tom O'Horgan, an interview with Zero Mostel, information about Eugene Ionesco, and the original movie trailer, to name a few. The trailer gives an idea of how the studio marketed this film as a comedy, even though it views more along the lines of a drama or a very, very dark comedy.
Having read the play in college, I enjoyed this adaptation. If you enjoy a movie that makes you think, then this is definitely the movie for you.

Complete rip-off crap.......2006-12-29
You know that spoof movie, "Waiting for Guffman" ? About 20 minutes into this "documentry" I felt like I was watching waiting for guffman.
If you are a white stripes fan, you will absolutley HATE this rip off. It's the biggest piece of crap ever. There is >> NO
<
< white stripe music. There is no white stripe performance footage. There is NO original white stripe interviews.
This is just a bunch of people from detroit who sit around and tell "inside" stories about jack and meg white. All of the stories can be utter crap lies but no one will bother to actualy check up on them because it's true crap.
There is one interview in particular when one of the "insiders" goes on for a few minutes about how great the colors red and white are. He goes on to explain, "Red and white can be side-by-side, up and down, red can incircile white, or white can incircle red. Red can be next to white, or white can be-next-to------red"
Well thank you VERY much for that insight about how one could potentialy arrange the colors red and white.
I wish I can get the time and money back. I never post Amazon reviews but since this DVD was THAT bad I feel it's my civic duty to warn others.

Fine episode of Nature.......2007-04-07
This episode is a tour of the San Diego Zoo and it shows how the animals are cared for. It is a very enjoyable program for any animal lover or fan of the Nature series. This is one of the few older episodes available with narration by George Page. The animals featured include pandas, cheetahs, rhinos, gorillas, giraffes, and many more. There are also two short videos on the DVD made by the staff of the zoo to educate the public. One is about the polar bears and the other discusses marsupials-- mainly the koala. Polar bears and koalas are among the zoo's diverse exhibits of animals. The videos are good bonus features for an entertaining, appealing DVD.

Stalking dangerous big game with Peter Capstick.......2007-02-17
Ever wonder what a big game hunt with Peter Capstick would be like? If you're looking at this video, you've probably read some of his books. This DVD is one of a series of hunting/safari videos made with legendary author/hunter Peter Capstick in the late 1980s. In this video, Capstick accompanies the writer/director of the video series, Ken Wilson, on a hunt for the white rhino in South Africa. The series as a whole is somewhat of a mixed bag, and definitely overpriced in my view. This video is one of the best in the series, though. Capstick does most of the talking and it is mostly anecdotes about hunting, the dangers of hunting rhinos, a few funny stories. He talks a bit about the oriental practice of using rhino horn as an aphrodisiac and claims to have tried it himself (he didn't feel it really made much difference!). Capstick, Ken Wilson, and two guides stalk several rhinos in this video, taking several other game animals before the big confrontation at the end. There is an extensive narration in the beginning of this video about the pre-Ice Age ancestors of the rhino, some more recent history of the near extinction of the rhino, and more recent conservation efforts that have brought back a huntable population. Capstick also explains some of the differences between the black rhino and the white rhino. The cinematography is nice too, I've never been to South Africa, but it must be very beautiful. If you like hunting, PHCs literature, or safari in general, I think you will find this both informative and entertaining. I only give it four stars as it is something that most people will not watch over and over again.
