Tired but watchable adaptation of the popular '60s TV show of a friendly Martian who lives with an agreeable earthling. Like Disney's other live-action remakes 101 Dalmatians and Flubber, the emphasis is on quick-moving scenes and special effects--not character. Jeff Daniels is the bemused earthling who gets to know Christopher Lloyd's alien ways. Much of the film feels like a retread borrowing heavily from other sci-fi comedies (and "fish out of water" films), including Lloyd's own Back to the Future. Lloyd and his talking space suit (voiced by Wayne Knight who brings the same personality as his Newman role on Seinfeld) don't know simple Earth customs but inexplicably know every pop culture reference in the last 10 years. Daryl Hannah and Elizabeth Hurley are along for the ride as Daniels's good-girl and bad-girl flames. TV's Martian, Ray Waltson, shows up as a secret agent alien hunter--and pours more emotion into his scenes than the rest of the movie combined. Ages 6 and up. --Doug Thomas

3 out of 5 stars Well-made comedy. .......2007-06-14

Only problem is, it's silly comedy, and I really can't stand it. This would be great for young kids... for me, not so much. I was hoping for better because I really like Bill Bixby, but this isn't complicated enough to hold me for more than a few seconds at a time. I end up fast forwarding through it to get to the end...

1 out of 5 stars 1 Star For Amazon Pricing.......2007-05-26

By pricing this $.01 below free shipping, Amazon probably thought that I'd buy more to get the shipping for free. They were wrong. I bought this at a different site plus an additional boxed TV set. Nice try but we're not that stupid!

5 out of 5 stars The Third Season does Exist.......2007-05-16

Telepictures Corporation AmericanLife TV Network is showing the third season of "My Favorite Martian" through the help of Warner Bros. Television. Every other week they are showing each episode in their original format as it was in the fall of 1965 to the spring of 1966 in color. One week a 1965 color episode then the following week a B&W 1964 to 1965 second season episode and then follow by another third season episode.

I don't know if Warner Brothers is running a test to see what kind of a response it will get but it might led to a new re-release of all three season by Warner Brothers. They may only release it on HD-DVD's but only the future will tell.

I am only guessing about all of this because of them televising the series only on one channel in a very large number count. I do not have HDTV, so if they are televising this series on those channels I have no way of knowing. My DVR makes it possible to search through all of the channels that I receive a program. This is how I found My Favorite Martian on one station out of 1000 channels with the exceptions of HDTV.

The show is being televised once a week. There is a repeat of the same episode at midnight but the new one does not come on until the following Friday.

In my own personal view, I doubt that "Rhino" will ever release the third season. So, if you can capture it on TV go for it.

If you're a fan of campy 60s comedy as I am, this is for you. Likeable characters, good writing--they don't make 'em like this anymore.

Description

Disney's hilarious MY FAVORITE MARTIAN is an intergalactic comedy that crash-lands the classic television series into the nineties! This hilarious adventure begins when an ambitious TV reporter, Tim O'Hara (Jeff Daniels), stumbles upon a Martian (Christopher Lloyd) who has just crashed on Earth! Thinking this is the story of the Millennium, Tim schemes to expose the Martian -- who has taken human form as "Uncle Martin." When Tim's efforts are constantly foiled by Uncle Martin's crazy antics, he decides to help the resourceful alien return home. With the government hot on their trail and a spaceship in pieces, can they blast Uncle Martin off in time? Wild special effects create outrageous laughs, including aliens morphing, cars shrinking, objects floating, and Martin's rowdy spacesuit, Zoot. Also starring Elizabeth Hurley (AUSTIN POWERS), Daryl Hannah (SPLASH), and Ray Walston (from the original "My Favorite Martian" television series), MY FAVORITE MARTIAN keeps kids and parents entertained over and over again with its fast-paced action and nonstop laughs!

1 out of 5 stars Miss this Martian.......2007-02-02

I like Christopher Lloyd. From Star Trek three's Kruge to Taxi's Reverend Jim. The man is a great character actor. I like the classic Martian show

However, this movie version is for the birds. It seems to recycle old ALF plots rather than cover any new ground.

Jeff Daniels and a pre "Kill Bill" Daryl Hannah is wasted in this remake.

I wont subject you to the worst stuff this film offers like a talking space suit with a mind of its own.

The cameo by the original martian, Ray Walston is cute, but worthless in this drek

4 out of 5 stars Humor for the Whole Family.......2006-11-12

I love Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future, so had great hopes here. As the martian, stranded by his ship's engine problems, he gives the film some humorous moments. Unfortunately some of his speeches were delivered too fast and the viewer can only guess at the content.
They make pretty good use of special effects changing people into aliens or having Lloyd fall literally apart when he feels depressed. I could have skipped the corny talking suit, but guess they wanted to work some animation in as well.
Enjoyable enough on first viewing, but not one that I'll want to see over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Disney At it's Best..........2006-01-01

Disney's My Favorite Martian is a very good and enjoyable movie for the whole family. It stars (Jeff Daniels), who plays a reporter for a tv show & (Christopher Lloyd), who plays an out of this world Alien from mars. Tim O'Hara(Daniels) had a good job, when he got fired from his job, he stumbles upon a crash wich was made by an alien space craft, inside this space craft emerges an Alien who hitches a ride with Tim, wWhen Tim relizes that he picked up an Alien he becomes Atached to him and calls Him Uncle Martin(Lloyd). can Tim help Uncle Martin back home, Well you'll have to rent the movie and find out.

This movie is also based upon the tv show. This is a really good movie.

1 out of 5 stars I Nearly Cried.......2005-11-20

Now I understand what Don Maclean is trying to say.
'My Favorite Martian' was one of my favorite shows as a child. I looked forward to seeing how the movies would render it: but I must say I was sadly disappointed. This is a violent, over the top mess. The grotesque Christopher Lloyd has no charm as the Martian and Daryl Hannah needs to be in a slasher film to play out her twisted sensibilites. I do not know what the director was thinking about. Is everyone in Hollywood on some kind of mind zapping stimulant?
This is supposed to be family entertainment? It has been appropriated by the dark side.

4 out of 5 stars Ray Walston Shines... But Chris Is Fun Too!.......2005-04-29

This movie was my first exposure to "My Favorite Martian". Originally, I wasn't overly impressed. Though I have always found Chris Lloyd funny, the inuendo used here (especially by Zoot) degrades rather then builds up the fun, for the most part. "Give her the finger." Tim tells Martin (refering to his levitation ability; but the other implication is clear).

Now, I appreciate it a little more but I'd ditch the talking suit. He does nothing for the plot (except a vital 15 second bit).

I have only recently purchased Season 1 of Ray's original My Favorite Martian Series and I have to say that I prefer it over this 80% To be fair, Chris is heart-warming in his own right. But Ray was really the one who caught my attention..."I've been tryin' to hike a ride home for 30 years!" He exclaims. The poor guy. His other comments leave me wonderin' is he playing his '60's character?

4 out of 5 stars Return From the Past........2007-01-17

MY FAVORITE MARTIAN was only on regular television for three years, but had a huge impact upon the popular culture of the time; it launched the careers of two actors and was one of the few shows that both fans of sci-fi and Westerns enjoyed. The show starred Bill Bixby (who later went on to be David Banner in THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as Tim O'Hara, a low-rung journalist whose life changes forever when a flying saucer containing a Martian (Ray Walston) lands on the roof of the garage apartment he lives in. The Martian's ship is severely damaged and he can't return home until he fixes his ship. The Martian, who has powers of levitation and retractable antennae in his head, disguises himself as a human, moves in with Tim, and takes up the identity as his Uncle Martin. Bixby and Walston have some amazing chemistry and had the duo worked in things other than this series, they could have been as big as Abbott and Costello or Burns and Allen. Walston received a great deal of critical acclaim in life, but Bixby was a great actor who never did receive the acclaim and recognition he should have.

This DVD has four episodes all in color. Each of the episodes revolves around Uncle Martin's time machine that he invented. "Go West Young Martian, Go West (parts 1 and 2)" is a two episode story where Martin and Tim are sent back in time to St. Louis, Missouri in 1849. However, the time machine is in California and the pair have to get their way there, but without changing history. In "Martin Meets His Match" Martin brings back Leonardo Da Vinci to the present to assist Martin in working on his spaceship. Finally, in "Pay the Man the 24 Dollars" Tim learns an important lesson about not messing around with history just to do historical research.

I enjoyed watching all four of these episodes. They are only about 30 minutes in length each, so it takes around two hours to watch the entire DVD. This is a great way to introduce someone to MY FAVORITE MARTIAN or as a token gift for fans of the original series.

5 out of 5 stars Ray Walston in a Technicolour Feature........2005-11-07

I really enjoyed those reviewed episodes in Colour, They truly stand the test of time. Very well written episodes by very sensible scientific minds. With the exception of the remake of "My favourite martian" by Disney, I've never seen Ray Walston starring in a Tecnicolor film. A very entertaining experience.

3 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi and Laughs.......2001-02-02

"My Favorite Martian" is for Science Fiction what "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie" are for Fantasy: a sitcom based in a fantastic scenario. Bill Bixby (later Doctor David Banner in "The Incredible Hulk" TV series) is Tim O'Hara, a journalist in which roof a flying saucer fells. The occupant of the saucer is a Martian with retractile antennae and the capacity to became invisible and levitate objects. Stranded in Earth, the alien is forced to disguise himself as O'Hara's Uncle Martin. For then on, O'Hara and Martin lives in a "Odd Couple" situation. The Martian's unfamiliarity with Earth customs provided much of the comic situations. The high point of "My Favorite Martian" was Ray Walston's characterization of Uncle Martin. The chemistry between Walston and Bixby was a decisive factor to the success of the series. Walston can be seen in 1999's big screen adaptation, as Uncle Martin's (Christopher Lloyd) fellow countryman, stranded here in Earth since the sixties. The series opened in 1963. The first two seasons were in black and white, and the third in color.

Season 3 was slated for an August 9 release... then, APPARENTLY, someone at Rhino got the bright idea to hold the release back indefinitely to shill this little 4-episode waste of money. My advice is... don't buy this. Make Rhino eat as much of the production cost as possible.

1 out of 5 stars Where's Season Three????.......2005-09-14

This happens more often than not since the release of older tv shows on DVD has become popular. The distributors such as Rhino suck us, the consumers into buying,as an example, seasons one and two of My Favorite Martian and anticipating the scheduled release date for season three. Companies such as Amazon need to start holding the feet of companies like Rhino, to the fire and make them release what is promised on time. DO YOU HEAR ME AMAZON AND RHINO????

1 out of 5 stars Where is Season 3?.......2005-09-07

im with Mymunster3.
no way im buying this!
i want season 3!
it's the hurry up and wait...

1 out of 5 stars Instead of releasing this, release season 3!.......2005-08-26

Why would we want four episodes, when we could have the whole series on DVD! Season 3 was slated for August 9th, but it did not arrive. Come on!!!

4 out of 5 stars The first four episodes in B&W.......2004-04-08

I don't own this DVD however I have seen all these episodes and as this has been on the market for sometime without any reviews or episode information, I have copied the episode guide from the website: www.TVShowsOnDVD.com This is a great website and I would recommend checking it out if you're interested in finding other old tv series that may be available on DVD such as this to purchase through Amazon. I gave this DVD 4 stars purely based on the episodes themselves as I don't know what the DVD quality is like.

Episode 1: My Favorite Martian (The Pilot)-Trouble begins when reporter Tim O'Hara spots the crash landing of a flying saucer in the nearby woods and he nurses an injured alien-who he introduces to neighbors as "Uncle Martin"-back to health.

Episode 2: The Matchmakers-Tim is in charge of looking after his boss's lovesick dog, George. And Martin is playing matchmaker between Tim and Marsha, the owner of the canine object of George's affections.

Episode 3: No Cure for the Common Martian-Martin has a common cold but, whenever he sneezes, he disappears. Meanwhile, Tim loses consciousness after Mrs. Brown gives him one of Martin's pills in order to keep him from also getting sick. Can Martin save the day as well as Tim's job?

Episode 4: Russians R In Season-Tim is in big trouble with the feds after he forges a letter from a "concerned citizen" to the newspaper he works for, protesting that the $2 billion space can't possibly work because it's based on an erroneous equation-one that only Uncle Martin could have known was in error.

3 out of 5 stars My Favorite Martian, Vol. 3 & 4.......2007-02-15

5 Stars for the show, one star for this DVD. My Favorite Martian is one of the all time good shows you and your family may enjoy.
But beware, this DVD only has 4 episodes on it. All 4 are contained in the 1st season set for only 11.00 more money. So instead of getting 4 shows for 13.00, you get 37 shows for 24.00. The title of vol. 3 & 4 is confusing. There is no vol. 3 & 4. Amazon needs to change it to reflect only 4 shows, which make the cost per show very expensive. Try the full season, you will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars How far the mighty have fallen!.......2005-06-20

I bought this on a whim and am I grateful. I had forgotten the charm, innocence and wisdom of Uncle Martin. Comparing it to some of the stuff of peddled today. It just makes one aware of how rude and courser most of our entertainment has become.

4 out of 5 stars The pilot episode is not time comressed........2003-05-04

After reading a claim of time compression by another reviewer,I checked the time of the pilot and it is 22 minutes and 29 seconds and not the 21 minutes that he claims.
It has to be remembered that this was the pilot and not a regular episode so comparing times is not valid. Also if it was time-compressed the voices would be one semitone higher as they are on PAL versions of American shows in whuch the shows are sped up by 1/25th of a second. The voices sound exactly the same on the pilot as the other episodes.
My verdict on the show, four episodes with clear pictures and good sound. A good job done by Rhino on this production.

1 out of 5 stars Pilot episode TIME COMPRESSED!!!!.......2003-03-05

Notice how everything in the first episode or pilot is un-naturally rushed. Listen to the music. Check it's running time. Then check the running time of the additional episodes. The pilot 21 min. the others 25. Rhino has released this otherwise great show in a TAMPERED with digitally time compressed/edited version. All dvd collectors of classic t.v. want versions better, sharper and at the very least UN-CUT then those shown on Nick at Nite and T.V. Land. Rhino did us no favors with THE REAL McCOYS (EDITED), THE LONE RANGER (EDITED) and add to their list My Favorite Martian!

5 out of 5 stars I like old time tv shows.......2001-11-18

I have always liked black & white tv programs!{ in FACT I STILL OWN A 20INCH BLACK AND WHITE TV SET} my favorite martin ran on tv when I was kid. today I like the program even more because it is clean and it is still funny after all those years! I would love to see more of the programs released on DVD. I don't mind that some older prints have minnor defects in the film. it is the story and the plots that our the most important to me. I realize that rino did the best they could with the prints they had to work with. the recent passing of ray watson was a great lost to me. I would recommend this disk to anyone looking for funny and fresh stories. I detest the foul mouthed south park that every "thinks is so good today" we need more clean comdy on television today.
