RHYTHM WORKSHOP: Raquy breaks apart eight popular bellydance rhythms: baladi, saiidi, maksoum, masmoudi, ciftetelli, malfouf, ayub, & semai. Acclaimed as a percussion performer, instructor and composer, Raquy teaches us how to recognize each rhythm. Then Jenna, a star dancer, instructor and choreographer, demonstrates effective dance combinations for each of the 8 rhythms. Accompanied by Raquy and Carmine, Jenna then also demonstrates the unique art of drum solo improvisation including the above rhythms.

CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: Jenna takes you step-by-step through THREE bellydance drum solo choreographies; beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each instructional session takes place before the mirror, enabling you to follow Jenna as if you were right behind her in the studio. On screen, a beat counter accompanies choreographic demostrations. Choreography breakdown sections separate each dance into numbered combinations, and provide titles naming each move. The "Learn and Practice" section offers a step by-step breakdown of each combination and a presentation of the choreography "from the top" with practice repetitions inserted, so you can follow Jenna and learn the steps in real time.

The DVD also contains a warmup sequence recommended before learning or practicing, and Jenna's famous Shimmy Drills: the Shimmy Layering Drill, and her 3/4 Shimmy Drill. The drills are fun mini-exercise routines to help you learn and build on the art of the shimmy, one of the most colorful and vibrant bellydance moves.

This DVD teaches you how to dance to a drum solo - not to a particular performance or sequence (although there are 4 performances done in detail) but helps you understand the music and as cliched as this sounds, feel the music.

The DVD is well-chaptered, where you can choose a specific segment you want to work on.

Warmup - a bellydance specific warm-up with some hip swirls and such

Choreography Workshop - there are 4 performances or drum solos done in detail. They're supposed to be beginner, intermediate, advanced/expert. Each of these is broken up into 4 segments - performance (done by the instructor in front of an audience), tutorial (step-by-step of each move), learn & practice (loops it 2x, so you can practice) and finally one where you do it in full.

The tutorials are all done in a studio in front of a wall-to-wall mirror with a view of the front and back of the instructor, so you do not miss anything. There are even close-ups of the footwork, at the end of some of the more complicated movements. Another great thing is that there is a little countdown marker at the bottom left of the screen, while the instructor counts it out loud as well.

The tutorials are done at a good pace - slow/explanatory, perform it once or twice. When you move on to the next movement, it gives you detailed instructions on how to segue smoothly from one move to the other.

Rhythm Workshop - Raquy, the percussionist, explains a little about the music. How you can pick up what type of rhythm or style it is just from listening to it. There's also a tutorial and performance by the instructor, Jenna, in how to dance to the drum (and the drummer).

Shimmy Drills - Shimmy Layering Drills, 3/4 Shimmy Drill. These are pretty amazing and it'll really make you work on those shimmies.

Performance, Music etc. which are typical of most bellydancing DVDs.

What I especially liked was how well organized the DVD was. It was easy for you to skip between movements in the tutorial (Choreography Workshop - #2) .. from move #1 to move #2, which may not be a big thing but for repeated viewings or practices this would be advantageous.

Again, I highly recommend this DVD. It is best for beginner-intermediate bellydancers since you do need to know some of the basic movements beforehand.

Excellent choreography DVD for someone who already learned the basic belly dance moves or to accompany Jenna's first DVD, I highly recommend it!!

I just liked this touching story right from the start! John Ritter and Polly Draper displayed such a warm chemistry and you just rooted for them to find their way to eachother despite the many hurdles they faced. Eventhough I've seen this movie several times over the years, I would watch it everytime it would air on Lifetime. It's just the kind of movie you could kick back, relax and shed a few tears of happiness at the end!!! I'm so glad this movie has been released on dvd because it's another body of work I can collect on the late John Ritter, who I still miss very much.

Adrain (Polly Draper) is a woman who gets pregnant. But her husband never wanted any kids so he leaves her. Being alone and dealing with an oncoming divorce she meets Bill (John Ritter) who is there for her to help through this horrible time. Bill falls in love with her but Adrain still hopes that her husband will return when she gave birth to their child. If he does and what will happen to Bill I won't tell here. Watch for yourself and enjoy "Heartbeat". And by the way, you'll LOVE the cast !

In this 1946 comedic role, 18-year-old Arlette Lafon (35-year old Ginger Rogers) has a Doris-Day-mixed-with-Nancy-Drew screen presence. She is lively, funny, and virtuous. Her morality makes her an obvious misfit for what will take place. Leaving reform school, Arlette joins a French pickpocket class headed by a very animated Professor Aristide (Basil Rathbone of Sherlock Holmes fame) to have room and board. With natural acting ability, she becomes a star pupil despite her desire to be honest. Unhappy with the thought of stealing, she contemplates returning to reform school. A befriended pickpocket classmate convinces her that entering a "white marriage" of convenience would prevent her from that unpleasant destiny. All she needs is money to pay for the arrangement. With such a noble goal in mind, she sets out for the French public with her newly learned craft.

The temporary success of her first heist leads to a guilty conscious and indebted service to an ambassador at a fancy ball where she meets young French diplomat Pierre La Roche (Jean Pierre Aumont) under false pretenses. After confessing her sins and goals to him, she expects him to marry her. Arlette and Pierre are obviously attracted to each other. However, he decides to sponsor a deadbeat to fill the husbandly role so as not to sully his diplomatic reputation. As she plays along with his stubbornness, Pierre's feelings grow even stronger. She even belts out a love song in a swimsuit to allure Pierre's affection. Whoever gets Arlette in the end is truly the winner.

The funny HEARTBEAT story and invigorated acting compensate for the poor B+W image quality of the DVD and the unconvincing 18-year-old claim. There are no extras but for the low price (especially when purchased used), it's an entertaining way to spend 100 minutes multiple times.

HEARTBEAT is a delightful film from RKO, which stars Ginger Rogers. She plays an escaped reform-school girl called Arlette Lafon, who becomes a pupil in Professor Aristide's (Basil Rathbone) school for petty crime. Arlette is a reluctant pupil but soon shows much promise in the art of pocket-picking. One day whilst trying to steal the tie-pin of an ambassador (Adolphe Menjou), she is thrown into a scheme to unmask a debonair young politician called Pierre la Roche (Jean-Pierre Aumont). Complications arise when Arlette and Pierre begin to fall in love, but what will happen when he discovers her criminal associations?

Ginger Rogers is the angel on top of the Christmas-tree in this delightful screwball comedy. True, perhaps the film might have been enhanced by having a European actress playing Arlette (Danielle Darrieux and Simone Simon come to mind), but Rogers is so lovely here it's hard to imagine the film being better without her. Jean-Pierre Aumont is a capable partner; Menjou and Rathbone are wonderful as the metaphorical puppeteers manipulating Rogers.

Alpha's DVD has a watchable print. For the most part, the picture is sharp and well-defined, with varying degrees of dirt and debris throughout the film. A pleasant treat for Ginger Rogers fans.

Sweet & romantic classic.......2003-02-25

Set in France, this romantic non-musical stars Ginger Rogers as Arlette, a young pick-pocket who falls in love with a handsome diplomat (Jean Pierre Aumont). Fresh out of pick pocket school, Arlette gets caught on her first professional attempt and ends up at an embassy ball where she is blackmailed into stealing a watch from a young diplomat.
To her surprise, she not only succeeds in stealing his watch but also in stealing his heart as he easily falls for her beauty and charm. Enchanted by him herself, Arlette tries to hide the truth from him but can't do it for very long.
Watch Basil Rathbone in a brief but funny performance as the professor of the pick pocket school, and enjoy the great on-screen chemistry between Rogers and Aumont.

Cute, charming rainy day movie.......2002-02-05

Ignore Maltin for once, and check out this little seen gem. Silly at first, but it gradually grows on you. Rogers plays a young run-away, desperately turning to crime to survive the streets of Paris. Basil Rathbone is the owner and operator of a rather unique school for pickpockets she unwittingly stumbles upon.

After receiving some prelimanary training on the art of theft Rogers is sent out into Paris to repay Rathbone's investment. Things get compilcated though as she is caught trying to lift a man's tie-pin on her very first day. Instead of turning her in to the police, the man comissions her to make a lift at a high society ball. Her mark turns out to be a handsome French Diplomat, and the plot then follows their various misadventures as they fight, argue, and fall in love.

This Morgan Heritage DVD is really a redemption of roots reggae. The morgan family is really a great family and obviously very talented. If they continue together, they will be around for a very long time. All the music on the DVD were done beautifully and it does not have the poor audio quality that plagues a lot of Reggae DVDs out there. I was never a fan of this family, but I'm now a biiiiiiiiiig fan!

This dvd was well worth my money! This is Morgan Heritage at their very best! This dvd captures the group at two of their concerts in Europe. I thought the lighting could have been better and the mirophones should have been turn down a bit but having said that I really ENJOYED this dvd. Each member was interviewed individually they discussed how and where Morgan Heritage began and who and what inspires them. They performed almost all their hits off the "Three in one" and "More Teachings" albums, Their performance was outstanding there was no way I could stay seated on my couch I had to get up and dance! I loved the way they sang and played the songs "Maskal Square" and "Falling Race" It was nice to see Una Morgan take center stage and show that she can sing just as well as her brothers. Gramps you need to lose the shades and show that good looking face of yours. Lots of additional features. So if you feel like some great entertainment this is the dvd for you!

A visual discussion of man's incomprehension of woman.......2006-11-16

Catherine Deneuve is one of film's all time great beauties who has also become a very fine actress. At this point in her career, she was still blank but beautiful. Her Director put this to good use, casting her as a woman who is pampered, spoiled, a woman for whom life has given her so much she is completely lost and has no idea what she really wants, but drifts from vague whim to whim.
Of course, she is such a beauty that she is perfect casting for this kind of woman who has men falling over themselves just to light her cigarette, and the kind of jealousy and possessive controlling impulses beauty brings out in men.
Lightly handled, this film is a visual discussion of the true nature of love, and the tradeoffs we make in finding the right relationship. Money and stability, passion and poverty are contrasted, with some surprising revelations about what makes a love meaningful and lasting. Yves St. Laurent supplies the really amazing wardrobe for the sequences of wealth ( I counted at least 5 really flawlessly coutured coats), which seems at first to make this film very glossy and superficial and "what will she wear next" - but this supplies our framework of seeing how unimportant these things are to her, and also builds a great contrast for the sections of everyday financial struggles.
This film is greater than the sum of it's parts. Great costumes, some postcard style cinematography, and a fine performance by Roger Van Hool as the obsessed Antoine, and an exceptional, nuanced performance by Michel Piccoli as Charles. (He and Deneuve had made several films together by this point, which augments the familiar feeling between them.)
Because DeNeuve is still young here, and the essential capricious coldness of her character, this film does not supply as much emotional connection or depth as it could. We have only Piccoli as a window for that, so this film becomes a man's view of the beautiful woman they adore, and a fine representation of their incomprehension of women. Historically, falling in step with "free love" and early feminism, it is a great representation of that special time when men really could not figure out what women wanted... because women were still trying to figure it out themselves.

Remember those illustrated novellas that our mothers used to enjoy reading.You had the spoiled girl who had an affair with an older man.Usually,she meets a younger man who is less fortunate.The woman to make ends meet gets a job in a library,but it doesn't take long for her to be bored and she returns to the older man who brings her security.This is basically the story of LA CHAMADE.CATHERINE DENEUVE was 25 at the time and she was indeed gorgeous,but that is not enough to save a film that is so predictable.My favorite scene is the one at the airport when LUCILLE is waiting for CHARLES and gets annoyed by another man.She says to him :fichez-moi la paix!If you buy this for the bonus features,don't bother,they did not include a photo gallery of DENEUVE.

Heavy on the Gloss.......2004-02-11

Yet another of Francois Sagan's chic, sleek, and shallow sudsers. Sagan has always examined the sins, immoralities, and weaknesses of privalged parisians, and 'La Chamade' is no exception. Basically, it's style striving for substance. Does it acheive it? No. Is that okay? Yes. 'La Chamade' is an agreeable distraction as it features a Love vs. Money storyline played out against swinging 60's Paris (with a side trip to the Mediteranian!). Catherine Deneuve looks stunning (as always) in a series of late 60s haute couture, the characters thrash about in gorgeous settings, and drive great cars. It's everything one would have watched 'Dynasty' for, however, as the film is in french the subtitles allow you to feel slightly superior and not so guilty for enjoying it!

In August of 1987 in Arkansas, two teenagers were murdered and their bodies were placed across a set of train tracks so their bodies could be dismembered. The reason they were killed was because they saw a drug drop from an aircraft in their vicinity and they couldn't be left alive to report what they saw. These deaths themselves are mired in controversy as explained in this program but they opened up the doorway that sheds light on a massive drug smuggling operation that happened right here in America.

The prime location for most of this illegal activity is a place called Mena, Arkansas and the small but extraordinarily busy airport that services this town. This was a base of operations of sorts for aircraft making drug runs to and from South America and ferrying massive amounts of drugs into the United States. Mena has been called the home of Contra gun running, drug smuggling, and covert black operations. It appears that the lucrative nature of this narcotics business is a popular and simple way to fund covert missions when needed (the Iran-Contra scandal is a good example). It was supposed to be mired in secrecy but the government has shown time and again that they are terrible at keeping things quiet but they're experts in damage control, manipulation, lying, and deception.

A key player in this story is the C.I.A. and America's chief drug smuggler Barry Seal who ran his own huge smuggling operation during this time. Questions abound regarding Seal as a CIA agent, how much the American government knew and how complicit they were in all of this, and many other things. Thanks to a large assortment of evidence, eyewitness testimony, video footage, and interviews with key players in this documentary, some of it very solid and some of it circumstantial, it shows very disturbing and shocking events that involve many big names high in the government. It also points out agencies that you ordinarily might not expect to be involved in these types of illicit activities.

I found this documentary to be quite interesting for the most part and the information contained within is highly controversial and thought provoking to say the least. If even half or most of what is presented here is true, it is a scary look at a dark and menacing side of the American government that isn't held accountable for its actions and it poses a real threat to a healthy democracy.

Get This!! People need to know the truth!!.......2004-08-08

You have to see this film. It's 2 hours long, and worth the price. You will be shocked by what goes on in upper government office, and the whole conspiracy to bring in drugs to the U.S. to fund wars in South America and (God knows how many other parts of the world) by top officials in the CIA. Don't get me wrong, there are many people in government that don't even know this is going on, and there are others that know but cant do anything about it!
Even if your a skeptic, you need to see this film, it will make you look at your government with different eyes.
