The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America "lost" in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha Mason plays Eastwood's love interest, and Mario Van Peebles is funny as an undisciplined con artist who joins Clint's men and finally catches the spirit after getting his butt kicked a few times. --Tom Keogh

Description

After serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway finds himself with a collection of medals and no war to fight. Training a new group of Marines that are more green than mean, Highway complicates matters by attempting to reconcile with his former wife, Aggie. Rekindling the spark in his failed marriage won't be easy with a crisis brewing in Grenada and his pathetic platoon far from ready.

5 out of 5 stars Clint Eastwood & the old breed of Marines.......2007-05-13

This is a wonderful movie...showing the difference between the "old breed" and "new breed" of marines. I have seen this MANY times. I know some of the quotes by heart, and started using one of them from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-15

I bought this for my brother because he wanted it. We ended up watching it and I was really pulled into this movie. This is not your typical war movie, but more about how Clint transforms a bunch of poor soldiers into fighting men. A fine movie!

3 out of 5 stars It got me to join.......2006-11-12

"Heartbreak ridge," is one of those movies that I think turned into an unintentional recruiting movie. First off, for those true devil dogs, like me, you all recognize Eastwood's character of GySgt Highway as the epitomy of what Chesty Puller described as a Marine. How many marines have encountered Gunnys, Sergeant Majors, and First Sergeants that held the same attitude and mystique that Gunny Highway had? I mean, first off, a combat veterean who tells a POG (Marines will know that term) officer to go "F" himself, is the kind of NCO we wanted to follow. I know that when I first watched this movie, it made me want to join (which I did) and be just like Gunny Highway (which I didn't). For the people who see this movie and say it portrays the Corps in a negative light, go live with a Marine infantry unit, and you'll see how realistic it is. It may not be the best Marine Corps story (I save that for Jarhead), but its one of the best out there, better than Full Metal Jacket. I reccomend that all 0311 Marines, and really, any Marine, should add this to their "Must- Own" collection.

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie Eastwood ever made.......2006-09-17

This movie is so bad that even the Army, which supported it at first, withdrew there support. Eastwood's character started his career in the US Army during the Korean War where he fought in a battle later called "Heartbreak Ridge". The story line was so inept and the telling of the tale so bad that the Army withdrew its support in the production. The film company then had to rewrite to scipt so that Eastwood's character changes services and enlist in the USMC after the Korean War and fights in the Vietnam War.

So all of you "Leathernecks" looking for a "pride of the Corps" tale should pass, it isn't going to happen in this story. In fact, the movie takes pains to present the USMC in a very negative light. That the Corps continued to support this production reflects just how desperate it was for any mention from Hollywood.

The script is pathetic, the production weak, and the conclusion unsupportable. Send Hollywood a message and do not support this movie.

5 out of 5 stars "Shut your mouth, Hippie!".......2006-09-05

An excellent movie, Heartbreak Ridge, brings to the screen the story of a down-on-his-luck sergeant in the U.S. Marines who is given another chance/shot at what he loves the most: his job, his woman, and his men.
Clint Eastwood and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the humor, are all wonderful!
In short, Heartbreak Ridge is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!

Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Extended Cut should have been..........2007-05-30

There is no denying Stripes as a classic from my (insert age now) youth. And, sans the additional scenes, it is still an all-time favorite. However, I just can't get my arms around those extended scenes. The fact that a little warning is telling me throughout that "the director feels these scenes were superfluous, and a waste of your time" (my quotation marks) really doesn't help matters. Buy Stripes if you don't already own it. But, don't buy it for the extra scenes...

5 out of 5 stars Irreverent loser makes good with great fun.......2007-05-20

Up tight people get theirs with humor, but not much differently from the theatrical release

1 out of 5 stars 5 STAR MOVIE UNRATED EDITION DVD IN DEFECTIVE.......2007-04-11

I love this movie, but I am extremely disappointed with this unrated release. The first problem is that even though you can watch the theatrical version of the film, where ever the added scenes were put in there is a slight pause before going to the next scene! This is inexcusable and it distract the viewer every time it happens. The extra scenes are worthless so now either version is ruined. This should have been recalled. Great movie worthless DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Movie. Extended Cut not worth it........2007-02-01

Not worth the extra added scenes plus they are explicitly marked as added scenes. Kinda cheesy. The good news is that the original movie can also be played. The movie is a 5+

5 out of 5 stars Bought as a gift..........2007-01-09

I bought this as a gift for my husband. I watched this when it was first released, very funny movie... worth watching over many times. You can't go wrong with Bill Murray.

5 out of 5 stars beginner.......2007-04-01

If you are a beginner to exercise as I was...this is the DVD for you...very great detailed instructions, but you can follow the instructions easily as you exercise along with him...don't get me wrong...if you are just beginning it may take you a while to get through the whole session, but well worth the money

5 out of 5 stars This IS a Bootcamp!!!.......2007-01-05

Folks! This workout is no joke. I thought I could get through basic training without stopping. Well, I could not even get through first 20 minutes and had to stop because the burn in the muscles was just unbearable. This is a very thorough workout. Here's what to expect.

First of all, this workout builds endurance. If you reach a point where you get through the entire workout without interruptions then you are guaranteed to obtain an endurance of an athlete. I liked the bands, but they are usefull only for the upper body exercises. When Billy Blanks began the legs routine, the bands were just on my way and frankly did not add any resistance to the kicks. So feel free to stop using the bands once you begin the kicks. And please do not even try to get through the entire DVD if you are a beginner or only somewhat in shape. What good would it be if you have sore muscles and cannot even feel it because you died during that push-up routine? Take breaks and slowly build your endurance. Maybe after about a month you can try to be a hero and actually complete this workout and still be able to walk to a shower rather than have someone else get you there.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Boot Camp.......2006-08-02

If you are looking for a cardio workout, this DVD is not for you. However, if you want strength training, you'll be pleased. He does go a little bit too fast at times (which tends to make for sloppy form for anyone who is not experienced in general kick-boxing like moves), but overall, you'll feel this work-out in your legs. I'm just disappointed it wasn't more cardio based.

4 out of 5 stars HARD!!.......2006-02-27

This workout is so hard.I had to stop 2 times because I had to run for water and I couldn't even finish the whole DVD! I like the workout because they move at a fast pace but sometimes I couldn't keep up.Also the floor exercises are way to advanced for my taste I'll work my way up there.I did about 30 to 35 minutes of this and I was dripping in sweat.Anybody who loves cardio workouts and punching and kicks this is for them.Even though they do some streaches in the begining I advise you to streach before doing this. Now I'm kinda scared to see what the Ultimate Bootcamp is like.I ordered the Bun and Thigh Roller and I'll be using that and this but belive me only 20 minutes of the Basic Training Bootcamp a day along with 10 minutes of the Bun and Thigh Roller.Thats exactly 30 inutes of exercising.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Workout..........2006-02-02

I've been an advanced exerciser for many years now and have especially loved Taebo. When this came out, I had to give it a try. My sister had purchased it so she let me give the basic video a try. Oh my gosh!!! I couldn't believe how sore I was. I watched the video first then did it. It was so much more challenging then it looked when I watched it through. I used to think that my shoulders were one of my strongest body parts, but I was really struggling because those bands make such a difference. Even though I was sore, I asked my husband to buy the set for Christmas and am loving the videos.

5 out of 5 stars excellent for beginners.......2007-06-09

i have thoroughly enjoyed this workout. i am a large woman and it was fun, but demanding. the first section (30 minutes) works shoulders and tummy areas. it was fantastic fun. i would recommend it, and i will purchase the next dvd from this duo.

3 out of 5 stars FOR BASIC BEGINNERS (skip this dvd if you've had any bellydance experience).......2007-03-14

In reference to the "Basic Moves" portion...
This is a half hour dance *instruction* video. Some moves may tire out your shoulders and hips, but it isn't much of a "workout," and definitely not cardio or strenuous.

~10min of head/neck & shoulder/arm movements .
~10min of rib/hip movements. ~5min of basic steps.
~5min of floor moves (Cleopatra/outer thigh lift, cat, leg stretch)

They introduce individual isolated moves, and repeat them several times for users to practice; most moves were easy to pick up (but will take time & practice to make it look graceful). I don't know if it's the instructors or if it's because they are demonstrated isolated motions, but they look a bit robotic/jerky. This seems is an Intro to belly dance for total beginners.

I think people with previous belly dance experience will find this basic video too slow/boring and stiff.

I would much rather RECOMMEND "BELLYDANCE BASICS AND BEYOND: Technique for a Solid Foundation" BY JENNA, which is a 2.5hr DVD with much better technique and practice options; it provides a teaching portion of all the major belly dance moves, as well as a drill/practice section.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-03-11

Thanks to other reviews, I bought this DVD. Perfect choice for beginners! I also started a belly dancing class and this is MUCH easier to follow. I love how it teaches the basic moves and then moves you into a work out. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking of trying this type of workout. Its fun, sexy and although you get some good burning going, easy to do!

3 out of 5 stars Not as easy as it looks.......2007-03-10

I would have given this a 5 star rating, but it is not as easy as it looks. The moves take practice! It is fun, but if you are as uncoordinated as I am, it takes a little work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-08

I first got this out from my local library. After practicing for a week, I ordered my own copy. I use it all the time! You work out in a FUN way that gives you results. I also recommend the Fitness For Beginners Arms, Abs, Hips, Buns and Thighs DVD. Great way to get in shape and learn a few moves while you're at it. The twins are inspirational!

Product Description

Once in a great while a movie comes along that truly grips and uplifts its audiences. Such a movie is An Officer And A Gentleman, a timeless tale of romance, friendship and growth. Loner Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) enters Officer Candidate School to become a Navy pilot and in thirteen tortuous weeks he learns the importance of discipline, love and friendship. Louis Gossett, Jr. won an Academy Award* for his brilliant portrayal of the tough drill instructor who teaches Zack that no man can make it alone. And while Gossett tries to warn the young officer about the local girls who will do anything to catch themselves pilot husbands, Zack eventually learns to love one (Debra Winger) while his fellow candidate, a memorable character portrayed by David Keith, struggles with a very different fate. An Officer And A Gentleman is a rich and satisfying story with moving performances that will stay with you long after the film has ended.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Romantic........2007-06-23

Although Officer and a Gentleman is riddled with cliches and predictability, it is also one of the most romantic movies of it's time.

Paula, a small town factory worker, meets and falls in love with Zach, an Navy officer candidate. She helps him through basic training, while they both overcome past and present tragedies. Once training is over, what will come of their short-term romance?

Oh, I definitely CANNOT resist a young Richard Gere in uniform. Believe me. I had to wipe the drool off of my chin. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Girl Gets What Girl Wants.......2007-06-12

This is just a simple old-fashioned love story, 1992-style. Lower-class loner guy joins Navy, gets into OCS to be a pilot and, along the way, meets a homie who wants a sailor to take her away from her factory job. A fling turns into the real thing, no matter how hard he tries to deny his feelings for her and, in the end, rescues the factory princess and drives away with her.

A true chick flick.

2 out of 5 stars What is all the hype about?.......2007-06-08

The movie's plot was thin and cliche, the lines were borderline cheesy, and the acting was nothing special. Despite all the nudity, the movie has no edge and when I try to think about a favorite scene, my mind goes blank. Save for the final scene, where is the romance? I simply don't understand why this movie is so highly rated, but perhaps it is because for its time, it might have been a masterpiece. Nevertheless, if a movie cannot transcend time, it isn't a success.

5 out of 5 stars Officer and a Gentelman.......2007-05-29

Great condition, Arrived before the time it was stated it would be delivered. A+ Kudos to Amazon

5 out of 5 stars A Formulaic Film Done To Perfection--This "Officer" Still Packs An Emotional Wallop.......2007-05-14

While no one would ever accuse me of being a romantic, I'll still maintain that "An Officer and a Gentleman" is one of the most affecting films within that genre. Even after 25 years, the film holds up and transcends its flaws to be a powerful and satisfying emotional journey. The film is riddled with cliche'd and oft-used premises and the ending is overly sentimental (when other films have attempted the same thing, I've absolutely cringed)--but none of that matters. With remarkable and raw performances, "Officer" taps into a primal nerve and makes even the most familiar movie formulas seem fresh and vital. I'll make no apologies--I think "An Officer and a Gentleman" is one terrific film!

Richard Gere stars as Zach Mayo--a charming, rebellious, and somewhat amoral badboy. Improbably entering the Naval Academy in an attempt to become a pilot, he immediately clashes with Louis Gossett, Jr. as his supervisor. Learning about teamwork and friendship, his life is further complicated by a local girl (Debra Winger) looking to latch onto a promising future. The film alternates between Gere's progress at the Academy and his burgeoning romance with Winger--but it seems unlikely that either are a good fit. It's a classic story of reform, of overcoming adversity, of making the right choices to become a better person. But what might be mawkish and predictable comes alive with tremendously real performances!

While Gossett won an Oscar as the imperious drill sergeant, and Winger was nominated--the film, in many ways, belongs to Richard Gere. Cunningly believable as the selfish antihero, his evolution throughout the film is remarkably genuine. With much energy and bravado, his performance should have garnered him a Best Actor nomination. In one of the film's most powerful moments, as he proclaims to Gossett that he has "nowhere else to go," his emotion is so raw and all encompassing that I've never forgotten that scene. Gere commands the film so fully, it's interesting to compare it to the more subdued work of his later career. I'd also single out Lisa Blount as Winger's best friend. Cast in a somewhat villainous light, Blount expertly conveys the desperation and ambition of a woman doing whatever is necessary to improve her circumstances in life.

The notoriously difficult (real life) relationship between Winger and Gere on this film proves once again that off-screen antics have little to do with on-screen magic. Channeling their hatred for one another, their romantic and sexual liaisons have a realistic power and aggression that is rare even today. Fierce and independent, these two literally crash together in unexpected--but believable--ways. Old fashioned, yet surprisingly modern, "An Officer and a Gentleman" is supremely entertaining. It will tug at your emotions, but it is never overly manipulative as it has earned our investment with its great characterizations! Highly recommended as drama, romance, or even as a character study--revisit "Officer" now that it has a more deserving DVD release. KGHarris, 05/07.

To borrow a phrase from Film Comment editor-at-large Kent Jones, "unjustly forgotten and now happily resurrected" is the best way to describe Criterion's superb DVD release of Stuart Cooper's Overlord. Relatively unseen since its European theatrical release in 1975, this moody, well-crafted meditation on one soldier's preparation for battle employs a remarkably seamless combination of fictional narrative and amazing World War II footage from the archives of England's Imperial War Museum. While this "reel + real" technique is relatively common, director Stuart Cooper (an American filmmaker working in England) applied meticulous archival research to ensure that the documentary footage was logically and authentically integrated with his fictional narrative (cowritten with Christopher Hudson) to lend convincing verisimilitude to his simple, straightforward story of a young British soldier's anxious days prior to joining the front line in the D-Day Invasion of Nazi-occupied France (a.k.a. "Operation Overlord"--June 6, 1944). Haunted by a premonition of his own death, Tom (Brian Stirner) goes about his pre-battle business as any soldier would (including a touchingly sweet romance with an equally shy British girl, played by Julie Neesam), and as Overlord progresses, we see how the individual soldier is gradually absorbed into the massive machinery of warfare. Brilliantly filmed in black and white by Stanley Kubrick's frequent cinematographer John Alcott, Overlord succeeds as a thought-provoking study of war from intimate to epic scales, in addition to being an impressive technical achievement that's stylistically connected to the experimental narratives of the 1970s, yet still firmly rooted in the nobility of British war films from the 1940s. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVD
As always, the Criterion Collection did extensive research to provide Overlord with a wealth of informative supplements. Director Stuart Cooper and actor Brian Stirner share the DVD's feature-length commentary, and Overlord's historical context is thoroughly explored, beginning with "Mining the Archive," in which the Imperial War Museum archivists provide background history on the archival footage that director Stuart Cooper so carefully integrated into his narrative. "Capa Influences Cooper" is a photo essay in which Cooper explores the influence of legendary war photographer Rober Capa on the visual and emotional content of Overlord, and this emphasis is further supported by "Cameramen at War," a newsreel tribute to wartime photographers and newsreel cameramen, featuring some of the Imperial War Museum's most spectacular footage from World War II. "Germany Calling" is an amusing example of archival propaganda (produced in 1941 by the British Ministry of Information and briefly excerpted in Overlord) which ridicules Hitler's Nazi regime by synchronizing Nazi rally footage so a silly British melody. "A Test of Violence" is Stuart Cooper's 1969 short tribute to the bleak, war-themed paintings of Spanish artist Juan Genovés; it was this film that led Cooper to create Overlord. Also included is Stirner's dramatic reading of journals by two Scottish D-Day soldiers whose experiences parallel those of Stirner's character in Overlord; the film's original theatrical trailer; and a 30-page booklet with an Overlord essay by Kent Jones, a short history of the Imperial War Museum, and excerpts from the Overlord novelization by Cooper and cowriter Christopher Hudson. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Seamlessly interweaving archival war footage and a fictional narrative, Stuart Cooper's immersive account of one 20-year-old's journey from basic training to the battle front lines at D-day brings all the terrors and isolation of war to its viewers with jolting authenticity. Overlord, impressionistically shot by Stanley Kubrick's longtime cinematographer John Alcott, is both a document of WWII and a dreamlike meditation on man's smallness in a large, incomprehensible machine.

4 out of 5 stars Special features practically outdo the film.......2007-06-27

"Overlord" is a curious film that blends archival footage into a fictional account of a typical British soldier preparing for the D-Day invasion. While I found "Overlord" lacking as a narrative, it was a worthy cinematic experiment and should be of particular interest to anyone interested in World War II.

Made in England in 1975 with the help of the Imperial War Museum, "Overlord" was not released in the United States until 2006. This long overdue DVD release helps atone somewhat for the film's long absence from North American markets.

"Overlord" is a short sometimes choppy story that manages as well as might be expected to integrate actual footage of Nazis and Allied troops in action including bombing raids and their devastating results. While the focus of the story is on one soldier's enlistment in the British Army and training for D-Day, it is an at times powerful meditation on war's effect on individuals. "Overlord" specifically examines the mindset of soldiers preparing for battle especially as they face the reality of their own mortality.

The real triumph of the DVD is the bonus features. On one such feature two representatives of the Imperial War Museum speak about the making of the film, specifically the archival footage. Another is a tribute to war photographers that was made in 1943. "Germany Calling" produced by the British government's propaganda arm during the war, is a very funny spoof of the Nazis.

As is always the case with Criterion films, the DVD is pricey (they don't do anything on the cheap) but as is also always the case with Criterion, the movie and all features are presented in pristine condition.

"Overlord" is an important edition to the many outstanding films on World War II, bold in its ambition and significant for its use of actual footage. And in this DVD release, the bonus features are not just add ons.

3 out of 5 stars D-Day as an Arthouse Flick.......2007-06-12

Frankly, I was disappointed by this film. I knew that it would not be a spectacular like "Saving Private Ryan" (which I also did not like that much except for the opening). But I felt the movie was far too surreal and "artistic." Case in point, there were several long sequences that tracked planes flying over Europe and showing the devastation (and I mean LONG sequences). The "hero" of the story was an infantryman so the flight sequences were awfully disconnected from the very, very minimal plot. There were a number of other "out of place" scenes as well, the most notable being one where inexplicably, we see two of the soldiers in the story sneak into a theater where a little girl is being made to sing on a stage by her mother.

Another thing I did not like was the morbid nature of the hero. I don't have a problem with him feeling that he was going to die. I imagine a lot of our guys and the Brits did on the eve of Overlord. I just can't imagine writing a letter forecasting my own death to my parents. Given the fact that they would have been worried sick already, it would have been the wrong thing to do. And I speak from experience since I was in the Army and while I did not see hand-to-hand combat, I was in several combat zones, and while I was scared, I managed to avoid writing morbid letters back home to my folks.

On a final note, I can't help but wonder if this film is very much so a product of the 1970s and post-Vietnam era both in the rather dreamy nature of the film and the muted anti-war tone.

If I had to do it over again, I would not have spent the money I did on this film to buy it new. I STRONGLY recommend anyone who must see it to get it on netflix or buy it used. It is just not worth the price that is on it.

4 out of 5 stars "A smaller and smaller part of a bigger and bigger machine...." (3.5 stars).......2007-06-03

One young British soldier, who celebrates his 20th birthday while training for the impending D-Day invasion, writes a letter to his parents and tells them that as time passes, he feels like a smaller and smaller part of a bigger and bigger machine.

Being a small component of a massive device is the central idea behind Stuart Cooper's "Overlord," an odd, hazy, child's-fever-dream of a movie that uses staged black-and-white scenes interspersed with actual archival footage from World War II.

We follow Tom (Brian Stirner) through a drab, dispiriting round of basic training; his experiences are interspersed with separate scenes of battle, of invasion and aftermath to illustrate events going on "meanwhile" all around him, events leading up to Normandy.

The movie is a truly unique visual experience. John Alcott shot the storyline scenes (just before he began work on "Barry Lyndon") and the movie has a look not unlike "The Elephant Man," or its thematic brother, "Johnny Got His Gun."

Though the incorporation of actual footage is very smooth, I never had any trouble distinguishing what came from the 40s and what was shot in the 70s. That didn't ruin the experience for me: Look at the hauntingly beautiful scenes involving bombers flying above the cloudline at night, or a harrowing training sequence in which a rowboat ditches its passengers onto rocks (Cooper reveals in his commentary that one or two men actually died during the exercise).

With its short, spare narrative and its stark conclusion, "Overlord" almost feels like a short story of a movie, but that doesn't downplay its impact or importance. This is a little-known movie worth reviving and it gets a fine Criterion presentation here. The commentary with Copper and Sterner is particularly good; it's worth listening to to hear how they did it even if you don't particularly connect with the film.

4 out of 5 stars Another nice WW II film.......2007-05-02

This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

Overlord is a film about a group of British soldiers who are training for D-Day. The film contains a lot of actual stock footage from the war and is intercut with staged scenes made for the film.

The DVD contains some excellent special features also.

There are audio journals of two British soldiers recited by an actor, a theatrical trailer, a short film about Spanish artist Juan Genoves, a photo essay featuring director Stuart Cooper on photographer Robert Capa, a British anti-nazi propaganda film titled "Germany Calling" which appears in Overlord. It contaisn doctored footage of Nazi marches and souds effects which present the Nazis as fools. Also included is a ducumentary of the Britush Imperial War Museum's video archives and a 1943 film trubute to newsreel cameramen who filmed scenes of World War II.

It seemed like a pretty good career move, and for the most part it was. Demi Moore will never top any rational list of great actresses, but as her career stalled in the mid-1990s she had enough internal fire and external physicality to be just right for her title role in G.I. Jane. Her character's name isn't Jane--it's Jordan O'Neil--but the fact that she lacks a penis makes her an immediate standout in her elite training squad of Navy SEALs. She's been recruited as the first female SEAL trainee through a series of backroom political maneuvers, and must prove her military staying power against formidable odds--not the least of which is the abuse of a tyrannical master chief (Viggo Mortensen) who puts her through hell to improve her chances of success. Within the limitations of a glossy star vehicle, director Ridley Scott manages to incorporate the women-in-military issue with considerable impact, and Moore--along with her conspicuous breast enhancements and that memorable head-shaving scene--jumps into the role with everything she's got. Not a great movie by any means, but definitely a rousing crowd pleaser, and it's worth watching just to hear Demi shout the words "Suck my ----!!" (rhymes with "chick"). --Jeff Shannon

Description

Demi Moore (DISCLOSURE, INDECENT PROPOSAL) is in top form in this action-packed hit! Moore stars as gutsy Lieutenant O'Neil, the first woman ever given the opportunity to earn a place in the armed forces most highly skilled combat unit -- the elite Navy SEALS! But the already brutal rigors of training camp turn into an unimaginable test of courage and determination once it becomes clear that no one -- powerful politicians, top military brass, or her male Navy SEAL teammates -- wants her to succeed! A critically acclaimed triumph directed by action hitmaker Ridley Scott (ALIEN, THELMA & LOUISE) -- you'll cheer for G.I. JANE as this brave soldier proves she belongs among the best of the best!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unrealistic and inaccurate.......2007-05-24

This movie was a real disappointment. Laced with inaccurate facts and utterly unrealistic scenarios. Not worth the watch.

3 out of 5 stars Silly Film Premised Upon a Politically Correct Fantasy.......2007-03-17

The scene where Demi Moore defeats a large man in hand to hand combat is utterly ridiculous. The odds against this happening in the real world are next to zilch. Woman are genetically inferior to men when it comes to physical competition and fighting. At the very best, a well trained female might be able to overpower an athletically inferior male. Other than that, when everything else is equal---the woman is going to lose badly.

Political correctness and wishful thinking dominate so many of the films released by the leftist Hollywood crowd. GI Jane is simply another attempt to deny reality and adhere to the dictates of the feminist movement. It should be listed as a comedy, and not a serious adventure movie.

3 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Movie about Girl Power.......2007-03-10

G.I. Jane is a movie that follows Jordan O'Neil, the first woman to be trained as a Navy Seal. She is a test case, brought in by a female senator who wants to get women in the military. Most men expect her to fail within one week... But they don't know Jordan.

G.I. Jane, directed by Ridley Scott, is the best movie about girl power I have ever seen. The movie shows that women can be equal to men. The strongest element in the movie is therefor loud and clear: Demi Moore. She does a fantastic job portraying O'Neil and gives a powerful and strong performance. The way her character fights her way up in the training course of the Navy SEALS is very interesting and great to watch. She faces it all: from sexual issues to teammates who refuse to work with her. But whatever happends, the character keeps going, and thats what I found a very strong element in the film.
Viggo Mortensen plays the Master Chief, one of the men who makes her stay a lot tougher. It's interesting to see Mortensen in a totally different role than the friendly Aragorn from the Lord of The Rings. He plays a real mean guy, and acts the part perfectly.

Ridley Scott filmed the film in a certain style. This style gives a nice atmosphere but also makes it messy at some points. Some of the action scenes (there aren't that many) are filmed with a shakey zoom in and out camera. Of course it gives the scene a certain feeling, but it leaves some kind of messy impression. So as a whole the film looks a bit messy, but that fact doesn't destroy the enjoyment at all. I was entertained by the film. From the training process to the tense endbattle, it is a great ride. The music is very good and also helps the film considering atmosphere and power. Seeying Demi Moore doing one arm push ups while a great theme is playing gives a great powerboost.
So Demi Moore steals the show, she shows that women can be strong and still be beautiful at the same time, I love that about this film.

4 out of 5 stars Demi Moore Rocks.......2007-02-18

this film was great because Demi Moore plays such a great feminist for military fair treatment. i feel this movie shows a lot of angles of the military that we don't see and other political visions of matters that continue to be of importance today.

3 out of 5 stars Great work out, horrible DVD layout.......2007-06-17

Ok...It's obvious these guys deliver a great work out...THEY ALL DO! However, most people buy these for home work outs, and not all of us are professional a the beginning, you will find yourself, remote in hand, as your working out, pausing, making sure you got the work out right, or just plain skipping a routine that your body doens't want you to do...that's where this dvd is flawed, take for instance the Stott Advanced pilates workout, which is a great two disc set, more expensive, with less information than this one, however, there's enough there to give you a GREAT work out, with the menu skip, where each skip doesn't take you to the next routine but to the next exercise...huge help...I'm a Film Direcotor and these guys really dropped the ball on dvd menu's which is really unfortunated considering the price and information within this DVD being so incredible. Three Thumbs for effort...booo on the DVD structure...my advice get another unless you're very seasoned..the dvd menu will kill you.

5 out of 5 stars A must have item for all interested in Pilates.......2007-01-27

This is an outstanding DVD for everyone that loves and practices Pilates. It gives you and idea as to what practicing Pilates should look like. This DVD shows your goal you are working to achieve when practicing Pilates is concerned. Also this Pilates DVD shows you the way the flow and real rhythm of Pilates should be, the way Joseph Pilates designed it to be. If you are looking for a DVD that shows you real, true to original and pure Pilates you must get this DVD!

5 out of 5 stars reference.......2007-01-05

The 'bible' of Pilates videos - for professionals only, however. A 'must have' reference work which should be consulted on a regular basis by professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Technique Perfection.......2006-02-19

Love these DVDs for keeping the "pure Pilates" method ongoing. Have been doing Pilates for 5 years with an excellent trainer (trained under Romana and her proteges) and do prefer the apparatus workouts. Had the amazing opportunity to take a private lesson from Peter Fiasca, (featured on these DVDs)the Classical Pilates Director, and also watched him go through the workout on the apparatus in person. The fluid moves learned with this method are amazing. I am 60 years old and can keep up with the 20 and 30 year olds on the apparatus. It has done amazing things for by body and health and I will continue to watch these DVDs and learn more. These are a true testament to appreciating the method and its results. You do have to have a good knowledge of the Pilates method (including the Matwork) before attempting to do some of the workouts. It is worth finding a 5 star trainer who has studied the Classical Pilates Technique. Great, great, great presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Pilates Equipment Rules.......2006-01-19

You have to have Pilates equipment to feel the power! Mat exercises never did it for me. I'm used to lifting free weights and playing football. When I saw this video and tried the workouts with a local teacher I could understand why people like Pilates. You have to be strong and smart to do these workouts. If you get this DVD and a good teacher, you'll be healthy wealthy and wise in no time.

Pauly Shore is definitely not one of the few good men army recruitment has in mind for molding into a soldier. But that doesn't stop pacifist Pauly from signing up for a hitch in the reserves in order to cash in on all the great perks, including free room and board and a steady salary for doing minimal work. Now this man's army is putting Pauly to the test. And Pauly the military misfit is serving his country as only he can, and single-handedly putting the army on red alert. Clipped of his curls and scuttling from a scud base in the African desert, he's battling with everything from rules and regulations to power-hungry authority figures and would-be world dictators. Surrendering to the comic crisis of being a soldier who marches to the beat of a different drummer, G.I. Shore is on a mission that promises to score a direct hit.

5 out of 5 stars Another Cool Movie.......2007-03-12

What is the hate with P.Shore? I never understood that because this movie is hilarious! If you are a fan of comedy, then this is a movie that you need to see. Shore surely defined the 90s guy, and this time, the 90s guy is thrown into the Army and then into war. This has to be one of my favorite movies and guilty pleasures because I am always able to find some easy laughs in the movie.

3 out of 5 stars In the Army Now!.......2007-01-19

This was a pretty funny movie. Although, it is not one of the funniest movies I have seen, I can't help but watch it a few times a year. It is not long, so it makes it easy to watch and get a quick laugh. Overall, I would rate this movie 3 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars HOW TOO FUNNY.......2007-01-09

I loved this movie!! I have a son currently serving our country in Afghanistan and I guess it just brought some fun into a very unfunny experience. It helped me to see boot camp in its true picture, at least from a mother's standpoint. It was good to see some humor in a very staunch experience. NOT FOR CHILDREN THOUGH!!

3 out of 5 stars "Kind Of Like An Emotional Enema".......2006-04-08

This film is typical of the Pauly Shore screwup comedy, but is definitely better than Bio-Dome. Pauly is the definite star of the film with the much less talented Andy Dick playing the sidekick. They join the Army reserve because it's easy money and they choose water purification as their army specialty as that is the least likely in their pea-sized brains to see combat (I bet you can't guess where this is going.)

Before long they are on a mission to Chad and off to war. Now let's ponder this for a moment...this is a Pauly Shore slapstick comedy about making potable water in Chad. As improbable as that sounds for a movie project, that's the bottom line, and before it's over Pauly becomes a war hero and gets the pretty girl with the crew cut.

While most of the movie was pretty lowbrow, there were a couple of things I really liked. My favorite character was Fred Ostroff, played by David Alan Grier, who is a paranoid dental student, and who has the consistently best lines (like the "emotional enema" line from which I took the title of my review) and humorous vignettes, most of which feature dental flossing technique demonstrations.

Far and away, though, my favorite bit in the movie is an ultra-obscure reference the writers slipped in to a very bad movie from 1980, "The Pumaman." Pauly Shore apes the brutish Vadinho when he seductively says to a starlet "I couldn't have done it without the inspirational guidance of my brother the Pumaman." This line won't make sense if you haven't seen "The Pumaman," but for those that have it is pure gold.

The movie is silly and will please fans of Shore and the brain-dead-stoner comedy genre. Three stars for the dentistry and Pumaman references.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-11-04

First, off, if it has Pauly Shore it is pretty much guaranteed to be funny. In this comedy, Pauly Shore and his buddy sign up to be in the reserves because they need the money, little does he know when he picks their area of expertise, water clarifacation, that it is something that will actually be needed and they get called into active duty. Watch this movie!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for.......2007-06-27

If you are used to the typical work out type video this is not for you. It's hard to explain - there is no real workout, it is one or two people demonstrating each move with a narrator. At the top of the screen they tell you how many reps to do. It goes way too fast to work out with the DVD, it is more educational to learn the moves and then do them on your own. If you already know the moves and form as I do, this will not give you a good workout.

4 out of 5 stars Pilates DVD.......2007-05-17

Great DVD if you are looking to sharpen up your technique or learn new moves. It is very no frills with no music or fancy images. I would recommend for those intermediate level and above, it would be too easy to not do moves correctly if you were a beginner. Using the ring in almost all moves really changes the workout and can make even the most advanced practitioner very sore!

5 out of 5 stars Magic Circle adds a lot to pilates workout.......2007-05-14

I'm new to the magic circle and love it. It has added more potential for toning to short pilates workouts. This DVD in particular is very good--the sequences are challenging while still being doable. You don't waste time between positions--they just flow one right into the other. I enjoy that there are different levels of workouts. Additionally, I would recommend the other Classical Pilates Technique DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Best out there!.......2007-04-28

I'm a pilates instructor but before I became certified, I looked very hard to find a tape that would be a no nonsence, straight pilates, no breaks workout. This was a very challenging task to accomplish until I found Classical Pilates. Every one of their tapes is excellent. It teaches REAL pilates and doesn't try sugar coating the exercises or changing them from the original method as Joseph Pilates designed. If you want to learn the real deal, Classical Pilates is the way to go!

5 out of 5 stars superior Pilates workout DVD.......2007-01-29

I've been teaching Pilates Method since the 1980's, and am a stickler for the "real thing." This is an AWESOME DVD--simple (no gimmicks) and true to the real Pilates. Shows three different levels of variations for all your classes. Brings freshness to your matwork. YOU'LL LOVE IT.
