The Ace Ventura Deluxe Double Feature offers both Pet Detective and When Nature Calls in anamorphic widescreen with soundtracks in Dolby 5.1 and (not indicated on the packaging) DTS. The original DVD of Pet Detective was full-screen (1.33 aspect ratio) only, though it had a scene with Ace masquerading as Hans Kissvelvet, the dolphin trainer, that was dropped from the theatrical release. The deluxe edition is missing this scene. The deluxe edition also has a third disc with three episodes (about 70 minutes total) from the 1995-96 Ace Ventura animated series with Michael Hall as the voice of Ace. --David Horiuchi

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was the 1994 box-office hit that turned comedy maniac Jim Carrey into Hollywood's first $20-million man. This gag-filled no-brainer stars Carrey as the titular rubber-faced gumshoe who tracks down lost pets for his heartbroken clients. Always a comic favorite,Jim Carrey plays the jumpy excitive pet detective Ace Ventura. Besides rescuing the occasional dog or cat,Ace lives the good life. However,he is called on an assignment involving a missing dolphin. Tension rises as he discovers the dolphin is the Super Bowl mascot.Ace immediatly gets on the case,with the occasional butt-talking,tutu-wearing humor.Ace then links the kidnapping to a Dolphin kicker named Ray Finkle,who is after Dan Marino,who he blames for missing a big kick in the last Super Bowl. Ace then links Finkle to Lieuntenant Einhorn,who turns out to be Ray Finkle in siguise.It's non-stop laughs as Ace,with the help of a Dolphins advisor named Melissa,takes back what is his and does what he does best!

Unbelievable. I mean come on, we're only talkin about a few minutes here. Missing some of the funniest scenes in the 1st movie including the German Jacque Cousteau character scene. I didnt even know the laserdisc version was an 'extended' version until now. Thank god I still have the laserdisc.

For the first time on DVD, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1.

There is also an audio commentary by the film's director Tom Shadyac. . Shadyac talks about how he ruthlessly edits his movies, always going for a fast pace and big laughs. He points out that originally the studio wanted someone like Chevy Chase or Rick Moranis but once Carrey came on board he drew upon his stand-up persona. Shadyac waxes on about the nature of comedy but with surprisingly little pretension. He also points out the bits that Carrey improvised in this fun, engaging track.

Included in this box set are three episodes from the short lived cartoon series that aired on CBS from 1995 to 1997. "The Reindeer Hunter" sees Ace helping Santa find Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer who has been kidnapped. This episode opens with a surreal set piece involving a snowstorm inside Ace's apartment. This episode wisely adheres to the first movie in terms of tone with a spot-on impersonation of Carrey as Ace. There is also quite a bit of recycling in terms of catch phrases as well (including one of the most famous, "Do NOT go in there!"). In "Natural Born Koalas," Ace and his monkey sidekick investigate ill-tempered koalas that have gone from sedate and cuddly to downright feral. Finally, there is "Dragon Guy" which features Ace dreaming about him and his monkey rescuing a fire-breathing dragon which is as odd as it sounds.

Ok I just dug up an old video of this movie and memories came floating back. When i was like 7 or 8 my parents bought the movie (oblivious to the rating) and i watched it again and again. Oh and after i watched it every time i started talking like him.

Man when i watched it now as 14 years old I got all the jokes. Their not that bad (if anyone watches Are You Being Served its about as bad as that)
its just so funny. I mean some of the non-sex jokes are kinda funny but over all its great.

Its a real family movie.

Jim Carry at his best.

My son ordered this flick, and has watched it again and again. It is a hilarious example of Jim Carrey's old work, and the quality of the disc and case was like-new. It arrived quickly, and in great condition. Will shop again!

Jim Carrey returns to the screen as Ace Ventura,only this time the plot has changed.This movie takes Ace to Africa,where he is to investigate the kidnapping of a sacred bat,which is the pride and joy of an African tribe.Together with Fulton Greenwall,a philosopher,Ace unloads his humor on the African terrain as he seeks to stop a war between the Wachattis and the Wachootoos,two African tribes. This movie was funny and I especially recommend you will find the consulate scene very funny. The Monopoly guy is priceless.Another great comedy from Jim Carrey

This movie doesn't have much of a plot, but fortunately it does have a lot of Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey is the greatest physical comedian I've ever seen. I think he was way ahead of his time in this film. Johnny Depp and Sacha Cohen are winning major acting awards for what Jim Carrey was doing ten years ago. The great thing about comedy like this is there is no such thing as over-the-top. I'd put Jim Carrey on a list with Marlon Brando, James Dean, Jack Nicholson, Chris Farley, and John Belushi as one of the most fearless actors of all time.

I enjoy bad movies, the sort of movies that are so bad that they're funny. Movies like Killer Condom, Amazon Women in the Avacado Jungle of Death, Barbarella, and most anything done by MST3K. This movie is not in that realm, it is just plain bad... it lacks the charm and humor of a good campy movie. The premise sounds amusing, but really, don't waste your time with this one.

Undiscovered spoof gem.......2003-08-18

Maybe a little too far behind the AIRPLANE rip-off zeitgeist when it came out in 1985 to be remembered, WHEN NATURE CALLS (no, not the Ace Ventura sequel) seems ready to finally find a cult audience, a few decades late, on DVD. At its best when it is content to be a collection of sketches -- especially the nearly ten minutes of coming-attractions spoofs at the beginning of the film -- the movie loses a bit of energy when it settles into a silly story about a father moving his kin out to the country where they encounter the trials of wilderness living. There are a hell of a lot of groans in this movie, but quite a few lowbrow belly laughs too. And it's a lot better double-feature partner to KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE than AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOOON.

I must admit I purchased this only to see the lovely Gates McFadden. If you are thinking along the same lines, DO NOT buy this without renting it first. She only appears for about five minutes, albeit in a t-shirt and shorts. I did watch the movie and can say that as a comedy, it makes a good sedative. This idea was better done later with Amazon Women on the Moon
