Knots Landing was a Dallas spinoff that spent its first season in marked contrast to the latter series' tales of power-grabbing, greed, corruption, conspiracies, and fraternal rivalries. Where Dallas concerned travails of an ultra-rich and influential Texas family, and its many enemies0--all great fantasy stuff--Knots Landing initially evolved as a drama set among Southern California's suburban middle class. Built around the character Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford), a recovering alcoholic and brother of Dallas' scheming J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), Knots Landing is set on a cul-de-sac in a seemingly peaceful neighborhood of modest houses. Gary, one might recall from several episodes of Dallas, is the black sheep of the Ewing clan. His marriage to the mousy Val (Joan Van Ark) was sabotaged by J.R., and their troubled teenage daughter came to live with J.R. and his parents on their expansive ranch.

Knots Landing begins with Gary and Val making a fresh start on the West Coast. If their second try at marriage works, they reckon, their daughter can come live with them in a stable environment. Gary, who wants nothing to do with the Ewing oil business, takes a job selling classic cars for his new neighbor, Sid Fairgate (Don Murray). But he reluctantly becomes embroiled, along with Val, in several local issues, the most complicated being J.R.'s plans to drill for oil just off the shore of Gary's adopted community. (Hagman, as a guest star, brings a lot of fun to that episode with his affable villainy.) It doesn't take long, however, for other major characters in Knots Landing to emerge as fascinating people in their own right, with no relationship to Ewing history except friendship with Gary and Val. In fact, Sid and his wife Karen (Michele Lee) are, arguably, the strongest characters in the first season, a couple with such strong underpinnings that their arguments inevitably result in a tighter union. Lee's performance, overall, is the best on the show, and several episodes (that look nothing like a primetime soap opera) are clearly written to spotlight her talent.

Gary's other neighbors include self-centered attorney Richard Avery (John Pleshette) and his beleaguered spouse, Laura (Constance McCashin); plus the youthful if little-seen Kenny (James Houghton) and Ginger (Kim Lankford) Ward. The stories in Knots Landing: The Complete First Season generally concern ordinary and familiar things: fear of crime, unexpected pregnancies, raising kids, dating, education, marital discord. Sure, many of the same conflicts occur on Dallas, but the fun in watching that show is recognizing that the super-wealthy and powerful struggle with the same problems the rest of us do. In Knots Landing, conflicts are more earthbound. That won't always be the case on this show: over subsequent seasons and with the addition of more characters and the loss of others, the drama will tilt in another direction. The Complete First Season establishes a solid foundation, however, and there's a lot of merit to it. --Tom Keogh

Hey, come on you makers of dvds! Where is season two? If you start something you have to finish it in good time. You took our money for season one, you owe us the rest. If it's the money you're worried about, everybody knows that the first season of any show is usually not the best season, just keep 'em coming, we'll buy. Please?

More Knots.......2007-07-01

Knots Landing was one of my favorite shows growing up. It literally surrounded my life. The studio where it was filmed is close by. I had a friend who lived next to the cul-de-sac. Scenes were filmed in my neighborhood. I've met a few people from the show in passing. You can't get additional seasons on DVD and apparently there are no plans for season 2 right now. It's not on cable... I have some of the episodes on tape, but they're aging... The show lasted 14 years and I fail to see why it doesn't warrant producing more seasons on DVD. It was a fun series. Too bad the studio which owns the rights doesn't think so...

We Need Our Knots.......2007-07-01

This introduction to the people and plots of Knots Landing is terrific! I was hooked on this series from the first episode but when Donna Mills and William Devane joined the series in later seasons the storylines really took off. This was the best of the nighttime soaps -- best writing, best plots.
Now it's time for Warner Bros. to release all of the subsequent seasons. I'm ready to buy all of them and if other fans want the next set of DVDs, write to Warner Bros.' marketing department and demand that they release the series or sell the rights to someone else who will release the DVDs.

Waiting for Knots Landing: Season 2.......2007-06-24

As a fan of the show, I'm waiting for season 2 of Knots Landing, but have read reports online that Warner Bros. is not pursuing release of the subsequent seasons due to lower than expected sales of the first season. I've written to Warner Bros asking them to reconsider. The show didn't start to really take off until season 2 when Donna Mills came on. I'm sure I'm not the only one waiting for the rest of the series and will certainly purchase it just as I have with the DVD release of DALLAS. Petition Warner Bros to release the rest of Knots Landing on DVD!!!

Wonderful old memories!.......2007-06-20

I grew up in Mauritius watching Knots dubbed in French back in the 80s and early 90s before moving to Britain where I saw the last season of it in English in 1994. I have to say that I am pretty content with this DVD set, as almost bit of it is a joy to watch. Unfortunately, no announcements about forthcoming releases of subsequent seasons have been made. I cannot understand why this is so - a soap as popular as Knots Landing was (and is) should naturally follow in the footsteps of the other biggies of its time (Dallas etc). In the meantime, I'll hang on to my first season buy, and shall keep my fingers crossed in anticipation of the second and other ones.

What goes around.............2006-02-20

This is a Romantic comedy that centers around a theme that is usually un-touched by RC movies: what if your wife turns out to be a lesbian? What's worse, what if the husband (played by Scott Cohen) is a bona-fide good guy who didn't ask to be a part of this mess? Well, things tend to get tied into knots.

John Stamos plays a womanizer (Cal) who would be the idol of most of we men. This is the first time I've seen Stamos in a movie in a long time - thought he looked familiar, but could not quite place him. Anyway, Paulina Porizkova is Lily, who is kind of Cal's counterpart; a womanizing / manizing bi-sexual femme-fatale. She has a knack for wreaking havoc on all the lives she touches.

Michael Leydon Campbell stars as Jake; a character I could relate to the most in this movie. He's your typical good natured nice guy who lacks social skills and is therefore condemned to always come in last. There is a deleted scene (in special features) that I think they should have kept in the movie. It epitomizes his frustrations with women. On the upside, he does get to hang out with Emily (Tara Reid). Most nice guys never score that high on the hotness scale!

This is an RC movie that is sexy, funny and brutally honest. Those who are looking for an unrealistic movie with a fairy tale ending would be best to skip this one. SERENDIPITY it's not.

Untying Knots.......2006-02-09

Knots? weird name! Strange story! Haven't heard of this movie? Neither had I. It wasn't bad though.

Knots is a story about three friends, Dave, (Scott Cohen) Jake, (Michael Leydon Campbell) Cal (John Stamos) and their wives girlfriends and loves.

Dave and Greta's (Annabeth Gish) marriage has devolved into the status of ho-hum. It's nothing they talk about. They may have not even consciously thought it out. Ultimately they agree to move into a new apartment, subconsciously believing it might give their floundering marriage a fixx.

Jake is the guy chicks really like, but unfortunately only to be friends with. Meanwhile friend Cal or someone else is getting further with the girls behind Jakes back. Cal on the other hand has a girlfriend, Emily, (Tara Reid) who travels extensively and when she's away, Cal loves to play and being a fashion photographer doesn't hurt.

Jake is confronting Cal about his latest transgression on their friendship in their local singles bar as Dave amusingly watches from the sideline, when a gorgeous creature catches his eye. This is Lily, (Paulina Porizkova) a mischievous, imp like barrister, who moves right in on Dave as Cal and Jake wander off, still arguing. Lily is putting the serious moves on Dave when Jakes returns. Dave, who is flattered and attracted to this comely vixen, is also repelled by this attraction and attempts to pawn Lily off on Jake, who asks Lily out. Lily demurs, that is, until Dave blurts out that he could come along also. Lily accepts and when Jake inquires about Dave's wife, he quickly includes Greta in the now, double date. Later, at dinner, when Greta seems to object that Dave was out with "the boys", Lily suggests a "girls night out." This is where the fun begins.

Conclusion

Paulina Porizkova playing Lily, is the wildcard in this movie. It's almost like she was injected by some divine plan into these people's lives to shake thing up and shake things up she did. Dave unexpectedly comes home for lunch one day and finds Greta in bed, naked with the equally naked Lily.

This experience leads Greta to demand a divorce. While the divorce is proceeding, Dave runs by the apartment to pick up some things and runs into Greta. Surprisingly, this leads both of them to experience the best sex of their marriage, after which Greta declares she is a lesbian. The thoroughly confused Dave now heads to Lily's office to confront her, whereupon she turns the tables and seduces Dave right on her desk. There's more but I've said enough.

Knots has a plotline not unlike the movie Closer but presented in a light almost wholesome manner compared to that film. Overall, I though the movie was good but not great. The same could be said for the cast, acting, story etc. While it may not be essential that you view this film, If you enjoy sexy comedies, this is a movie you should see.

Amusing movie.......2005-08-22

I enjoyed this movie mostly. It was a fun look at how messed up relationships can get, and the boundaries that are often pushed. The cast is what makes the movie enjoyable, with notable performances from John Stamos, Tara Reid, Anabelle Gish, Scott Cohen, Paulina Porizkova, and Michael Leydon Campbell. Greta (Gish) is married to Dave (Cohen), and both of them end up having sex with their mutual friend Lily (Porizkova). This sends their circle of friends into a dizzy, changing the dynamics of their relationships. It was a funny romantic comedy I found it refreshing.

Incredible fun for an overlooked movie.......2005-06-14

I didn't know what to expect coming into this film, and was VERY pleasantly surprised. Far and away the best part of it is Paulina Pouriskova. She has come a long way from being an SI swimsuit model and is very funny and polished and turns out to be a great actress. John Stamos gives a great turn as well in a much more sophisticated character than he is usually allowed to play. I don't normally think too much of Tara Reid, but she was great, and Annabeth Gish, who is always good, was amazing as the leading lady.

This instruction DVD has brought so much to the classroom, the students loved it and it was a delight to teach. Very simple to follow and I loved all the extras.
On our next phase we are going to make rope, how cool is that?

I highly recommend the Why Knot DVD for the beginner to knot tying. Following the DVD step by step enabled me to learn enough in two hours to actually teach others how to tie a dozen knots at a knot tying-exhibit booth at an international youth congress. Best Knot Tying D.V.D.......2004-09-28

This is the best and easiest D.V.D to use. It lets you see step by step how to tie different knots. We used the colored rope that matched the D.V.D. which made it much easier to follow. It is much easier than using a book. You can buy the colored rope off their web site at www.KnotTyingVideo.com. It was worth every penny that I paid for this D.V.D

Fantastic!.......2004-06-14

This is a must get DVD for anyone dealing with outdoor sports or recreation. This gives you all the knots that you will ever need for fun and safe outings. Parents with kids in any type of scout or outdoor group --- you will feel safer knowing that your child has learned all there is to being a well equipted knot expert. It is easy to use and has great graphics for noting detail and practicing each knot. We use it to teach our kids. Our daughter was one of the top kids in Illinois in speed knot tying competition this year because of this execellent DVD.

Eye Splices is very well done, Brion Toss takes what seems impossible to accomplish look easy. Very professional camera work and lighting, good audio, and several examples done from the viewer's perspective. I can't wait to try doing my own eye splices in double braided rope.

Don Street is a famous sailing author of instructional books and magazine articles plus his popular Caribbean yachting guides and charts. Until his recent retirement, he had been sailing the Caribbean since 1953 aboard his engineless 45 ft. wooden yawl, Iolaire. He also makes frequent transatlantic passages from the Caribbean to his home in Ireland.

In this unique and outstanding video Don teaches the knots and their applications so you know when and how to use them. He shows tying knots at normal speed and then cuts to slow close-ups that make it easy to follow each knot tying technique. Then Don shows how he actually uses the knots aboard Iolaire.

Don also teaches tying advanced knots such as the rolling hitch, fishermen's bend and tow-boat hitch. Don also instructs on heaving lines, stowing sail stops, securing halyards, plus how to coil, cleat and repair lines. Very few knot tying videos go into this much detail, teaching rope handling and the more advanced knots. And with video and slow motion instruction, learning is easy!
