5 out of 5 stars THE FINEST TRAINING VIDEO.......2007-05-15

Excellent training product. Well-organized, easy to use, top training material. My seven year-old son and I watch it together and then go out to practice. He's already learned some of the moves and used them to impress the coach of a traveling team. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2007-04-11

Reasonable review of various moves, but some of the demonstrations were much too basic, and did not show the deception needed to make the moves work. If fact, some of the "cut" moves looked very lazy in the demonstration. My youth team was not very impressed. A few more demonstraions by either professional players or in-game shots would have been very helpful in showing how to "sell" the moves. I think this is ok for youth coaches, but not for the players themselves.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Put up yer Dukes...!.......2007-05-17

Nice, direct approach to the genre of teaching video, Duke's vulnerability in from of the camera is a perfect foil for her strength of character at the poker table. Concise, witty and fun, the video is full of gems that I believe will help me relieve the donkeys of their hard-earned money..!

4 out of 5 stars Good tips, Good Value.......2007-05-10

"Advanced" can mean different things to different people. Let me start by telling you what it means here. It means you already know how to play the cards. This DVD will not tell you when to raise with pocket 7s or how to play when you flop a straight. This DVD is about what you need to know after you already know that. This is not about the "advanced" secrets of playing your hand. If you are looking for advice on how to play your two cards, this is not your DVD.

So what does it cover? The main claim to fame is the section on Tells. Annie covers techniques that the FBI uses to know when someone is lying for example. She emphasizes that you need to watch your opponents before you end up in a hand with them to get a baseline. For example, rapid blinking can be a sign of lying (bluffing), but if you haven't noticed the player before now, how do you know if he is blinking a lot? Some people just blink more than others. Also included are sections on playing against certain types of players (the maniac for one) as well as things like figuring pot odds and so on.

Yes the production values are minimal. Yes, Annie sits at the same table the entire DVD, but the advice is good and there is nothing to distract you from getting it.

If you already are confortable with playing your two cards then this DVD is a good way to help you move to the next level where what happens above your cards is just as important on what is on them.

2 out of 5 stars Informative but difficult to watch.......2007-04-25

I purchased both of Annie Duke's DVDs. The information is valuable but as a No Limit player, I found the discussion of both Limit and No Limit distracting.
My BIGGEST COMPLAINT is that the setting is identical to a funeral home, including the crimson velvet curtains framing an urn. Ms. Duke wears the same ugly shirt throughout both videos.
I would really enjoy these DVD's if they were produced in a visually appealing setting, and if Ms. Duke changed her peasant blouse. It is unfortunate that so much good information is wasted by poor production.

3 out of 5 stars good but too short.......2007-03-17

great advice on tells, but it is way too short. She spends a lot of time explaining why this dvd is only for advanced players but doesn'tgo through many topics that an advanced player thinks about. What she is good at are seeking "tells", and pretty much thats all she delves into.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good DVD for Intermediate Players Looking to Improve.......2007-02-02

Let me first start by saying that I have been playing hold'em poker for 3 1/2 years, the last 1/2 year of which has been for a living. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who, like me, is a visual learner. I personally get a lot more out of watching a lesson than by reading about one. But, that's just me. Anyhow, Annie (who happens to be one of my favorite players), does a fine job of covering all the major topics that an intermediate player needs to learn in order to move up the limits or simply to improve their profits at their current table limits.

No, this DVD won't make you the next World Champion, but it will teach you some very solid higher-level poker fundamentals if you are in the intermediate stage of your poker career, and it will be a great refresher course for experienced players who want to quickly brush up their skill set.

I especially like the way that this DVD is arranged into cogent chapters which you can easily jump to through the main menu. If you want a quick lesson on how to play position, for example, you go right to that chapter on the DVD. If you want tips on reading people's tells, based on FBI interrogator research, you can quickly get a nice lesson on that...and so on. It is not a video that has its information strewn about randomly throughout. In short, this DVD is very well laid out, and that is one of the things I really enjoy about it. I still go back and review sections every now and then to reinforce certain skills.

In closing, this is a good DVD and Annie Duke does a good job. Though it's only shot with her sitting at the table in a studio, she is charismatic and fun to watch. Will you learn the deepest, darkest secrets of world-class Texas Hold'em -- of course not. Would KFC ever publish their secret blend of 11 herbs and spices for anyone to buy? Same logic here, but I bet you will gain from this DVD.

That's my small blind (2 cents). Thanks for reading my review.

A slightly dated but nonetheless fascinating snapshot of musical history, Beat Street is an urban musical detailing the roots of hip-hop. Set in early-1980s New York, the film focuses on the lives of a small group of young people setting their experiences against the larger backdrop of the city's burgeoning music scene. The story of up-and-coming DJ Kenny (Guy Davis) and his relationship with jazz musician Tracy (Rae Dawn Chong) may only be a device, but it's surprisingly effective, as is the ultimately tragic tale of graffiti artist Ramon (Jon Chardiet). The movie's real raison d'être, however, is to showcase the sounds of the street, so it's full of some of hip-hop's most influential names--Melle Mel, Doug E Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, the Rocksteady Crew, Jazzy Jeff, and Arthur Baker. And while the combination of electro and rapping may sound a little crude to modern ears, there can be no doubt that Beat Street is the sight and sound of history being made. --Phil Udell

Description

Widely considered the most influential hip-hop movie of all time, this "gritty, streetwise musical"(LA Herald-Examiner) features a who's who of the movement's early starsKool DJ Herc, KoolMoe Dee, Doug E. Fresh, Afrika Bambaataa and Melle Melas well as the famous Rocky Steady Crew vs. New York City Breakers battle at the Roxy. Uniting the four elements of hip-hopbreakdancing, DJ-ing, MC-ing and graffitiinto an unforgettable experience, Beat Street is a true classic, packed with sharp lyrics, powerful moves and the flashiest dance sets the screen has ever seen! When rapper-DJ Kenny (Guy Davis) meets cultured jazz artist Tracy (Rae Dawn Chong), he is so inspired by her dedication that he vows to use his talents to escape the ghetto. But when his friend, a gifted graffiti artist, is killed in a tragic accident, Kenny comes face to face with the high price of artistic passion.

4 out of 5 stars Beat Street.......2007-05-24

I enjoyed this movie just as much as I enjoyed it over 20 years ago. It basically gives the East Coast Version of breakdancing and rap and how it got started

4 out of 5 stars solid gold.......2007-05-23

For anyone who ever had a rap/hip-hop/break-dance bone in their body this is the ultimate movie. Probably overshadowed in its time because of Fame, Footloose, and the antics of Michael Jackson, but this in my opinion ranks up there with the best of the dance culture. Unfortunately I lost those bones after growing taller, but this movie was a blast from the past and will stay high up on my DVD stacks.

4 out of 5 stars very good and interesting movie.......2007-03-09

the movie held your interest and had a good storyline about the youth of america

1 out of 5 stars Take It Off The Rack And It's Wack Put It Back.......2006-10-23

I don't know what's up with all of these 4-5 star reviews. This movie was awful. There was no plot and the movie just seemed to drag. Not even the guest appearances by Afrika Bambataa, Melle Mel, and the Rock Steady Crew could save it. I couldn't wait for it to be over with. The "graffiti" throughout the movie was absolutely awful. Ramo and his girlfriend were too white to have a baby that dark with curly hair. Guy Davis was fine back then, but not anymore. Rae Dawn Chong was just annoying. This is one movie I never want to see again.

4 out of 5 stars The Uncut Version.......2006-09-28

This movie is nostalgic for me. It reminds me of an era that I miss greatly. Many people here criticize its accuracy talking about bad grafitti, acting, love songs, etc. What do you guys mean? I am a New York Puertorican, Newyorican raised in Ravenswood Projects, Queens, Bushwick, Brooklyn and went to school in Spanish Harlem. This was back in the day when NYC was tough. La Familia, Ballbuster, Zulu Nation ruled the streets back then.

So I guess I got the right to say the movie accurately portrays life in NYC in the 80's. Some guy here criticized the love songs. C'mon man. What, people back then in the projects didn't love anyone?, had a girlfriend, etc? I find the movie to be so real that I definitely want to move back to NYC.

I know New York isn't the same. The South Bronx is being renovated. The gangs are gone. All the bombers, Lee jeans creased down the middle and finely pressed and jackets, the pumas and adidas with the thick laces in checkerboard formation, the boricuas with their wild Carribean looks, its ALL gone. But I need to go back, if not to play chinese handball at the schoolyard one more time.

I didn't give it 5 stars because there are deleted scenes. Why won't they come out with a DVD including those deleted scenes? I guarantee you everyone that bought this DVD would buy that one also.

Description

"Quite a few directors share and reflect the youthful rebellion and pop culture of their own generation. Penelope Spheeris is unique in that she uses her counter-culture sympathies to explore the lives, music, and attitudes of the new younger generation. You can see this in her movies. After documenting the punk scene in THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, she made SUBURBIA for me, in which she explored the world of alienated suburban teenagers, and later had a huge hit with WAYNE'S WORLD." -- Roger Corman~~When family problems and a sense of worthlessness overcome Evan, he finds escape with the orphans of a throwaway society. Calling themselves T.R. ("The Rejected"), these runaways hold on to one another like family, living in abandoned houses away from the society that despises them. SUBURBIA is THE punk rock movie, depicting with unbridled realism the lives, loves, and misfortunes of a discarded youth

4 out of 5 stars Flash back........2007-03-15

I watched this movie when I was a teenager (oh- about 100 years ago). I loved it then for the music and the kids who were in it. They were the same kids I hung out with, only on the west coast. Living life with no rules or discipline. Not to mention Flea was in it- a good reason to buy any movie. I just purchased it for my own teenage daughter who loves it as much as I do. Times may change but kids never do.

5 out of 5 stars "Next time, we'll do more than rip somebody's clothes off!".......2007-03-13

Always remember, if you see a girl, don't rip her clothes off! Doing that will drive her crazy! I know this because I saw it on Suburbia.

In the beginning of the movie, some people at a club rip a dress of a girl. She was being stuck up, maybe because her dress was fancy. So, the people go, "Hey, let's rip her clothes off." Whoa, bad idea! The people are all laughing, like "Man, this is funny!" But having her clothes ripped off her body has driven the girl crazy and all she can do is stand there and cry and scream. She is crazy now all because her clothes got ripped off her body and she is totally naked!

Later on, this one guy and his friend are angry. They went to a strip club and they had to pay to see a naked girl. They go to the house where these people live, rip the clothes off one girl and put her in a sleeper hold, then yell at the kids. They have a gun, and their message is clear: Girls better get used to getting their clothes ripped off by stangers and not go crazy...or else POW! So what happens next? THAT girl goes crazy. Not only that, she is driven so crazy that she is dead. Like, "wait a minute, even that first girl who got her clothes ripped off DID NOT kill herself! Come on!" But it is true! That is what can happen if you rip the clothes of a girl! DO NOT DO IT! Unless you want to see a girl crazy and dead!

4 out of 5 stars The difference between a mohawk and a landshark.......2006-12-31

This movie relayed how things were, or at least how people wished they would be. The situations are more cartoony than real at times. The prom queen in the pit? Okay, I saw it happen once, but she didn't get her clothes ripped off, she was beaten up by skin chicks. I think those that are seeing the reflection of class society and Reaganomics would be the objects of scorn by the TR kids themselves. The soundtrack rules and I think it's the first of it's kind (before Tarrintino) to have audio bites from the film itself. I'm still looking for that single that Jack was listening to in his room, just by the way. I read the other reviews and wonder if these are the people that I grew up with. This movie makes me disparagingly nostalgic, sort of the way that I feel about Iraq or Afghanistan. Odd that one of the most quoted line is about war.

1 out of 5 stars I guess I'm the only one.......2006-12-19

A bunch of lowlifes rip the clothes off of a girl and she stands there naked screaming for minutes. All of the T.R. kids stand around and laugh at this naked girl screaming. The adult gets on the microphone and says "Hey you guys, leave that girl alone, or no punk rock music for you"! This scene was so unbelievably stupid! If a young girl got all of her clother ripped off and was standing in the middle of a public place crying and screaming, no adult would say to "leave her alone" and "knock it off you guys"! So after this moronic scene, we are supposed to like the T. R. kids? Why? Also the racism towards the kids' stepdad was not making me like these losers any more. Are punks supposed to hate black people? No! This is my review so please click on ther button that says this was not helpful. Then you will be cool and hardcore!

5 out of 5 stars My band was in this dang thing..........2006-10-27

Filming this was a lot of fun for us. I was the guy with the soup can around his neck like the hippie hitler from The Producers by Mel Brooks. So much of the story was simply taken from real stuff that had happened in early LA punk days. The whole story about crashing the funeral was about us all being thrown out of the cemetary while they were burying our friend Kristie who'd overdosed on loads. The squats, the rip-offs, the broken homes--Penelope got most of that stuff right. Bummer that they did a pan and scan. Cheapass R. Corman.

One last funny bit--I was using Mike (TSOL)'s amp but some kid knocked it off the top of the stack so we never got a second take that would've shown more than just Stevo. And that's why you can't hear any bass during TSOL's set. The amp was putting out about 20% after the tumble.

Life Force Yoga to Beat the Blues is an all around fabulous yoga DVD whether you suffer from the blues or not. Amy Weintraub is a fabulous teacher and her instructions are clear and concise. The magnificent scenery and soothing music make it a feast for the senses. I own many yoga DVDs but this is an all time favorite!!

3 out of 5 stars Not for bipolar.......2007-05-07

I was somewhat disappointed with this DVD. When I received it, I discovered that many of the exercises are not for people with bipolar disorder (or inflammatory conditions such as IBD)...which would have been good to know before I bought the DVD. Also, I found the Sanskrit music rather annoying. However, the yoga teacher does seem to know about yoga and depression.

5 out of 5 stars Yoga to Beat the Blues.......2007-03-12

I found this video very comforting and a great yoga practice as all of the poses and breathing exercises are aimed at helping depression and anxiety. Amy is a lovely teacher! I especially like the joint warm up at the beginning!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Yoga DVD to Improve Your Energy Level and Mood.......2007-02-12

LifeForce Yoga to Beat the Blues is beautifully done and uplifting. The practice is easy to follow, and it really improves one's mood, energy level and sense of being "in balance." The opening joint warm-up dance is so much fun and uses great sanskrit music. Amy Weintraub's descriptions of the breathing practices, yoga poses and yoga flows are excellent. She also weaves mantra throughout the practice, which adds another dimension. I would recommend this to anyone, at any level, who wants to improve their sense of physical, mental and emotional well-being.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped could single-handedly give remakes a good name. Based on the 1978 American movie Fingers, The Beat... stars Romain Duris (L'Auberge Espagnole) as Tom, a hoodlum who works the shady side of real estate--evicting poor families from slums, cutting quick and dirty deals in the middle of the night--following in the footsteps of his sleazy father. But clearly Tom loathes both himself and everything he does. One night he accidentally runs into the man who managed Tom's mother, who was a pianist; the manager asks Tom himself to audition, as Tom once showed promise. All at once Tom hires a tutor and neglects his "duties," raising the ire of his cohorts but starting to make himself happy. This could be hokum about the power of art, but Duris' performance is so visceral, so emotionally vivid and engaging, that The Beat That My Heart Skipped becomes a remarkable parable about the danger of betraying yourself--all the more powerful because Tom's life doesn't simply get better, it grows dangerously more complicated. A superb movie with excellent performances throughout, making Duris' standout work all the more impressive. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Jacques Audiard, the acclaimed filmmaker of Read My Lips, comes this haunting new thriller that fuses two unlikely worlds to create a stunning portrait of a young gangster. Romain Duris (L'Auberge Espanol), in a standout performance, plays Tom, a 28 year-old who seems destined to follow in his father's footsteps as a Parisian property shark working in a sleazy and sometimes brutal world. However, a chance encounter with his late mother's music agent leads him to believe that he can become, like his mother, a concert pianist. In earnest, he starts preparing for the audition with the help of a beautiful, young virtuoso pianist who has just arrived from China. She doesn't speak a word of French; music is their only exchange. But pressures from the ugly world of his day job soon become more than he can handle...

5 out of 5 stars Music and the journey towards self-redemption.......2007-06-17

There is a distinct quality and style that most French films have, among them, the subtle music that plays on the background, or the use of silence to heighten emotions. But this movie made use of a much `louder' more modern music to really bring in the characters. Directed by Jacques Audiard, The Beat that my Heart Skipped is actually a remake based on the 1978 American movie Fingers. But unlike some remakes, it surpasses the original, not only because of the vision of its Director but for the powerful portrayal of its lead actor, Romain Duris.

In one of the most memorable performances of any actor of his generation, Duris transformed himself into Tom, a hoodlum who terrorizes poor urban dwellers in order to buy cheap properties and sell them for profits. There is a tradition to his work as he inherits the same `vocation' from his father. There is, however, a certain side to Tom, an artistic side, the one talent he inherited from his dead mother- the love of classical music and an ability (a remarkable talent, actually) to play the piano. As he struggles to maintain some semblance of `humanity' in his arresting and despicable character, he has to make a choice whether to remain loyal to his father and continue in their work or pursue a career in music, perhaps the only way out for him and a chance to redeem himself.

"De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté", is more than just a film about self-discovery and of love, it is a powerful testament to the ability of an individual to change.

4 out of 5 stars Fast, tense with outstanding acting and a clever storyline.......2007-05-19

Jacques Audiard, who previously gave us the very interesting Read My Lips (2001) and the cute and clever Venus Beauty Institute (1999), manages to create here a story about a character who is both a petty gangster and a pianist. Not exactly your usual combination of talents. Romain Duris plays Thomas Seyr who is that character. Duris brings an animal sensuality and an artist's sensitivity to the part. He is an actor of unusual skills and vitality. Audiard gets the most out of him.

In the beginning Tom Seyr is in apprenticeship to take over his father's way of life in a French version of the protection racket. Their particular hustle involves getting properties condemned by trashing them or infecting them with rats or some other vermin, forcibly throwing out squatters or tenants, then buying the property on the cheap, and then finally selling it at a nice profit. In the end, Tom...well, I can't give you the ending, but I can say that it is entirely agreeable and surprising with just a little twist on what we might expect.

Neils Arestrup plays the father. There are some other interesting characters and a lot of macho action, a bit of blood here and there, some quick and easy sex. And then there is an old piano teacher that Tom happens to run into one day who invites him to an audition. Tom has not played the piano seriously for years, but just seeing his old teacher brings back the thrill and the deep intimacy he once had with music, and recalls to him the career of his deceased mother, who was once a concert pianist who had hoped that her son would be too. He had the talent.

But of course playing the piano at that level is not something you can take up, let go, and then go back to. But Tom thinks maybe he can do it with a little practice. But he needs a teacher to prepare for the audition. When he tries to get one he is effectively laughed at since he is 28-years-old and is very much out of practice and indeed never really practiced that much. But by chance (there are a number of plot furtherances in this film that come about by chance--but that is not a problem because the chance meetings seem natural and are events that would probably happen eventually)--and so by chance he is hooked up with a young woman fresh from China who speaks no French, but is an expert pianist who needs a little money. She agrees to help him. Her name is Miao Lin. She is played brilliantly with subtlety and finesse by French-Vietnamese actress Linh Dan Pham, whom I previously saw in Indochine (1992) playing the adopted child of Catherine Deneuve's character.

The acting ability of Romain Duris and Linh Dan Pham are what carry this film. Audiard's direction is a bit scattered at times and especially in the beginning lacks focus, but a clever storyline and his ability to get great performances from the players overcome these faults.

See this for Romain Duris who gives a virtuoso performance and for Linh Dan Pham who captivates with restrained intensity.

4 out of 5 stars And The Beat Goes On.......2007-04-22

I missed the first half hour of this film, but still enjoyed it. Tom, (Romain Duris) is a Real Estate Agent. Apparantly, in France, this involves a lot more brutality and thuggishness than it does in Bakersfield (though there have been some indictments recently). Squatters are brutally evicted, debts are collected with force, fires are set, rats released. Tom got into the business like his father, but his mother was a pianist, and he showed promise there, too. A chance encounter puts him back on a musical path.

This could be just a syrapy fable about the power of Art and Music to transform, but it never gets too sacharine. A visceral performance by Duris and a good script makes for a compelling tale well told. When you think about it, it is about a man taking piano lessons. So, to make that come across onscreen is quite an achievement. One scene shows him out with his Real Estate colleagues, waiting in the van to roust some squatters from a property. Tomorrow is his big audition, and he practices a presto movement sans piano. His fingers move incredibly fast, but you can almost hear the music. You feel like he is really practicing his piece, not just wiggling his fingers randomly.

A semi happy ending with just the right amount of ambiguity provides the dénouement we crave.

2 out of 5 stars Like many others french movies.......2007-04-15

Lately There's a standard format in many french movies. A few of them are really interesting. This is not one of them. Very predictable, very clichè movie. Be careful with all the 5 stars review, not just for come from French must be a good movie. There's a lot of people that think in this way.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Shoot the Piano Player.......2007-04-07

"De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté"(2005)...aka "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" written/directed by Jaques Audiard is a French remake of James Toback's cult movie "Fingers" (1978) with Harvey Keitel. The film tells the story of a young man Thomas (Romain Duris) who is torn by two different sides of his personality - one dreams of becoming a virtuoso piano player and the other - a ruthless debt-collector and enforcer. I think that Duris's was the one of the best performances of last year - so convincing he was as a man who walked on the edge of two realities. The best moments of the film are the ones between Thomas and his piano tutor, the girl whom he hired to prepare himself for an audition that was offered to him by a man who had been the manager of Thomas's late mother, the talented concerto pianist. The man remembers Thomas who had inherited his mother's talent and used to study piano seriously until his mother died when he was 18 and he joined his father in the "real estate" and debt- collecting business. The tutor, a young pianist from China who arrived to Paris recently, does not speak any French and Thomas does not speak her language - so they have to relay to music to understand one another. The film is not perfect, and I am not too fond of director Jaques Audiard's frequent and abrupt cuts of the scenes but it is superbly acted, energetic, and well written.

5 out of 5 stars these were the days..........2006-08-26

It amazes me how something like B-boyin' that is so inventive, exhilerating, and positive could have only been in the mainstream media for less than 2 years (circa 1983-1985) but a fad like being a gangster (that is so negative), has been in the mainstream media for nearly 18 years! (NWA introduced it in the late 80's). It's sad to see that Hip Hop has turned into the very thing that it swore to diminish.

5 out of 5 stars Great, fun workout with a terrific instructor.......2007-06-27

Madonna Grimes exudes such positive energy that it's impossible not to enjoy this workout. In fact, all of the people featured in the video seem to benefit from her contagious enthusiasm. This is an upbeat workout that doesn't take itself too seriously. The moves are fun and easy to do. It's so enjoyable that I'm actually disappointed when it's over. It honestly is too brief! Combined with the 10-minute bonus workout (which I usually do after the primary workout),it's definitely a great workout. Madonna is the best instructor I've seen; I will definitely purchase her other videos in the future.

Hey everybody! I figured that I would leave a review because the reveiws from other people are what made me buy this tape in the first place. So here goes nothing..... This DVD was awesome. I really enjoyed the high energy and friendly MaDonna Grimes teaching style. I do this workout 4 times a week and I haven't tired of it yet. The dance steps are a bit tricky at first but if you stick with it two or three times then you'll get it and have a blast. I've lost 48lbs in the past two months and I love it. I throw in some light weights twice a week and I'm looking great!!

2 out of 5 stars This movie isn't that great........2006-06-24

I was an extra in this movie, and I was really excited to see it in the theatre. But I was really disappointed. I thought it was a dud. But some people like it, so maybe it's me...

4 out of 5 stars Funny stuff even after all these years! Underrated comic gem!.......2006-03-11

I remember seeing this in the theaters as a kid way back in 1980 (OK, now I officially feel OLD!)...anyway, this is a small, slight, yet hysterically funny and very smart comedy that somehow has fallen off the radar for most audiences - similar to Dolly, Jane, and Lily in "9 to 5," Jane, Jessica, and Susan make a terrific trio of would-be thieves trying to steal a load of cash from the "money ball" in a Pacific Northwest Mall. With cameos from Fred Willard, Eddie Albert, Richard Benjamin, and Dabney Coleman, the entire cast, the screenplay, the direction, and the tacky details of late 70s/early 80s middle-class America are all dead-on hilarious! If they can go ahead and ruin "Fun with Dick and Jane" by doing a remake, why hasn't anyone thought of remaking this underrated comedic gem? Seriously, if you love light, frothy, yet still-topical comedies, give HOW TO BEAT a whirl!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Gem.......2004-02-07

This is a fabulous, light comedy with a great all-star cast. This is something that deserved to be re-done on DVD. The plot concerns three women who live in Oregon. Jane Curtain is the wife of a wealthy architect. She comes home one day to fine he's run off with another woman, the bank accounts are cleaned out, and he's nowhere to be found. Bills are coming due. Jessica Lange is the wife of a wealthy veternarian played by Richard Benjamin. Her antique store is never profitable and now he has to sue her to please the IRS. She doesn't want to lose the store. Jill St. James is a divorcee with two kids and a deadbeat ex-husband. Her father then moves in with her when her mother takes up with another woman. She's pregnant with her boyfriend and they want to marry, but he has a no-future job, unless he can get the money to buy his boss' hardware store.

All three are friends and all three have something in common: they need money, and they need it now. After some failed schemes to get some, they decide to pull a heist at the local mall.

This is hysterical and tremendously funny. It's nothing deep or life changing, just a lot of intense, non-serious humor, great characters and great situations. Sure, there are some holes and a few scenes don't quite work, but this is something that ought to be in your permanent collection if you like comedies. It's a little dated, but has not lost any of its humor over the years. It's similar to "9 to 5" but I think funnier.

4 out of 5 stars A wry, neglected comedy.......2003-03-09

Although the details are dated, _How To Beat The High Co$t Of Living_ is freshly topical, with the economy in a bad way again. The three heroines' problems are, IMO, partly their own fault---but one has to root for their spunky, ingenious heist.

Jane Curtin improvising a striptease to cover her chums' getaway is a real highlight of the disc. She's game, sexy, and believable in her role---a really talented actress. And, for the record, the power is cut off only in _part_ of the mall, not the whole thing---I saw a review of the movie when it came out that didn't understand this point.

4 out of 5 stars THIS is why I am constantly on Amazon.com!.......2003-01-16

I can't believe this is finally coming to DVD!! I taped it a couple of years ago off of cable, have loved this movie since I saw it in a theater when I was 18.

I skim Amazon.com all the time, looking to see what's coming out on DVD, and nearly jumped out of my seat when I saw this - if you like "9 to 5" and movies like it, this is a gem! Susan St. James, Jessie Lange, and Jane Curtin play women desperate for money for one reason or another - St. James wants to get married to her boyfriend and become respectable; Lange needs the money to keep her from losing her shop, a business that's been steadily losing money that her husband bought for her but now has to get rid of or he's in tax trouble; and Curtin is a divorcee just trying to survive.

The three women, struggling to beat the high cost of living, come across a brilliant idea - their local mall is having a contest, a huge plastic ball in the center of the mall will be filled with money, and you have to figure how much is in it. What the ladies come up with is a plan to enter to ball from underneath, cut through it and use a vacuum cleaner hose to suck out a good chunk of the money out for themelves.

The planning and execution of this caper - using only what resources the ladies can muster up on their own (which includes getting the tools for their crime by stealing them from St. James's boyfriend's hardware store, in a hilarious scene where the kids come along for the ride because St. James's character couldn't get a babysitter) - does not exactly go smoothly.

Of course in this movie, as in "9 to 5" and others like it, the execution of the crime does NOT come off without its share of glitches. But wow, is it fun to watch, enjoyable and light entertainment that will put a smile on your face long after you've seen it, just thinking about your favorite scenes.

The king, or maybe that should be queen, of all drag shows, New York City's 10th annual Wigstock festival, provides the setting for this lively and frequently funny documentary. Some 30,000 fans showed up, many of them suitably adorned with impossibly huge wigs, and roving cameras did a fine job of capturing the celebratory atmosphere. It goes without saying that those who find men performing as women fascinating will revel in what the camera captured. Several drag performers prepping for their star turns on the Wigstock stage are profiled, and some of them speak about what possesses them to admittedly make spectacles of themselves. There are also quirky interviews with construction workers building the festival's stage, jaded neighbors in the East Village, and even some encounters with bemused New York City cops. The film features very professionally shot performance footage of such characters as RuPaul, Deee-Lite, Crystal Waters, and even a pair of dueling Tallulah Bankhead impersonators performing "Born to Be Wild," but the real star of the production is the hip sense of humor the filmmakers brought to the project. At times the interviews with people attending the shows and passersby in New York who simply shrug it all off come close to upstaging the guys in size 14 heels singing and dancing their hearts out onstage. --Robert J. McNamara

"WIGSTOCK"

Let's Party

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

If you are ever down n the dumps or just looking to be entertained, put "Wigstock" in your DVD player and sit back and enjoy. The original Wigstock festival was held in New York in 1994 and is immortalized by his great film. It was a day of joy in the city. What a beautiful way to spend an afternoon--people who are proud of who and what they are having a big party. This is the very essence of what makes America the great nation that she is. What a fun experience this is. "Wigstock says to us that we can all get together and just have fun. For 85 minutes you find yourself transported to another place where everything is fun.
It is hard to describe this movie. It is a documentary of a drag festival but it is more than that. It is a concert of drag queens but it is more than that. It is more than performance art. There are fabulous costumes and hair-dos and people being together and enjoying each other.
Some of the classic drag queens are here: Lady Bunny, RuPaul, Lypsinka and others and everyone possesses a unique talent. But sometimes the audience is even more interesting than the performers. It is a large array of all kinds of people, gay, straight, costumed, undressed, and transgender people--all who have the same idea in mind--to have a good time. There is nothing political here and nothing is sacred.
There are live performances and scenes of the skylines of New York. It is so beautiful to see gay and straight alike come together for the simple purpose of having fun. Mistress Formica opens the show and he is followed by Lypsinka who is entertaining as usual (Remember him in "Another Gay Movie"?). He is accompanied by the Wigstock dancers who desperately needed a little more practice but just had a great time pretending they could dance. Leigh Bowery does a bizarre performance about birth. As the performances take place on the stage, the cameras follow Alexis Arquette as he prepares his outfit for the celebration. Coming to the stage is a veritable show case of drag performers--some good, some not so good. There is also a bittersweet moment when you see the imposing World Trade Center rising in the background. It like many who were in the film is no longer with us. It makes us realize that we won't live forever but when you see the gathering of beautiful people you realize that you can live life and be happy while you do.
"Wigstock" succeeds despite the fact that it is shallow and silly in parts.
If we can celebrate at Wigstock, we can celebrate everyday. It is a look at the happiness and joy we can achieve just by being ourselves and being together. I was reminded of Mardi Gras, New Year's Eve and Halloween all rolled into one big fun time.
The message of "Wigstock" is to demonstrate that a drag festival, or any festival for that matter, is nothing more than a means for lighthearted fun.
The movie closes with the appearance of the organizer of the whole shebang, Lady Bunny. He is an exaggerated parody of everything drag is about and he is funny.
The one thing I did not like is that some of the drag queens provide a feeling of self-importance but I pushed that aside. Surely questions are raised by the festival but they are never answered. The film does not pretend to preach, teach or do anything radical. It simply wants us to enjoy--enjoy the show, enjoy the atmosphere and most of all, enjoy life.

5 out of 5 stars Does this movie even need a review?.......2006-07-11

Wigstock is simply one of those movies every gay man should own. If you haven't heard of it, go watch it. I don't care if you're the butchest gym bunny or the gruffest leather daddy, the messages of freedom, the celebration of homosexuality and the importance to unite our community is one that every gay man should experience. Besides, there are drag queens in this flick! Gaggles of them! And draq queens are the bestest! They have more nut than the butchest of the butch because they don't just wear their sexuality on their sleeve, they flaunt it, they own it and they take the brunt of a lot of negativity only to pick themselves up, fix their hair and do it again.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous.......2005-07-05

I first saw Wigstock in an Art-house cinema in Berlin amidst an audience largely made up of glamorous and extremely vocal German drag queens. And let me tell you, it was one of the most fun experiences in my life. Talk about audience participation? It was a riot!

I've since bought first the video and now the DVD and watch it again and again - whenever I need a pick me up - whenever I need to remind myself that, as The Lady Bunny says: "We can all get it together and have a great time!"

I have only two minor criticisms of this movie. 1. At a running time of approx 85 mins, it is not long enough! And 2. I really don't like Leigh Bowery's performance at all. Otherwise, it's all good. The audience are every bit as fabulous as the performers on stage and backstage.

A couple of my fellow posters have complained about the lipsynching. Why? It's a given in drag culture. And Girlina, Mistress Formika and the like are awesome exponents. Got a complaint? You try lipsynching in those heels, honey!

This film somehow manages to be both a celebration of diversity and community at the same time. I am totally in awe. My thanks to all concerned.

1 out of 5 stars Tired! (except for "THE LADY" BUNNY!!!!...who rules!).......2004-06-26

Once upon a time WIGSTOCK was fun. Definately before this movie was made.
Oh look there's that SAD RUPAUL on the cover, now I definately won't buy it.
Maybe if LADY BUNNY was the the only cover girl I would buy it. LADY BUNNY, a real performer. RUPAUL...TIRED! (repeat after me!!)
And what the hell is CRYSTAL WATERS doing in this movie? TIRED!
This film is really a SAD attempt at documenting the history of a very fascinating and lively event.
How about more of the people that really made the 80's EAST VILLAGE happen...WENDY WILD, JOHN SEX...etc I mean even have some minor figures from the 80's.
They at least have TABOO!, and FFFLOYD. But there were SO MANY OTHERS...why did they have to concentrate on the non-interesting performers from that era??

MORE LADY BUNNY!! LADY BUNNY!!
