Yogi Bear began as a secondary character on The Huckleberry Hound Show (1958), but he proved so popular, he was given his own series in 1961. A conniver and a schemer, Yogi frequently proclaimed he was "smarter than the average bear." His gentle pal Boo Boo always pointed out that Ranger Smith wasn't going to like his latest plot to steal "picanic" baskets from visitors to Jellystone Park, but that never stopped Yogi. The Yogi Bear Show also featured Snagglepuss, a bright pink lion whose, "Exit, stage left" became a catch phrase among kids, and Yakky Doodle, a self-consciously cute little duck. More than one critic noted that Yogi sounded a lot like Art Carney's Ed Norton character on The Honeymooners, just as Snagglepuss's voice bore more than a passing resemblance to Bert Lahr's Cowardly Lion. But the sound-alike formula proved popular, and Hanna-Barbera used it many times.

The Yogi Bear Show: The Complete Series includes all 32 cartoons featuring each of the starring characters. The show's finale was a birthday party special with appearances by Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, and other visitors from various Hanna-Barbera programs. Only a few extras are included in the set; the most fun is "Time Capsule Yogi," which offers the theme song, interstitial gags, and commercials. The Yogi Bear Show may not have been great animation, but it was an essential part of growing up in '60s America, and this set is sure to delight baby boomers who watched it as kids. "Goldbricker." Now there's a term you don't hear much anymore. But that's what Ed Sullivan called Sgt. Ernest G. Bilko back in the 1950s, and it's as apt a term as any for Phil Silvers' immortal comic creation. Hustler, gambler, scam artist, and con man also apply, but anyway you slice it, Bilko is inarguably one of the greatest characters to emerge in television's so-called Golden Age, and this three-disc 50th Anniversary Edition, cherry picking episodes from all four seasons (it ran from '55-'59), is a beautiful thing. Created by Nat Hiken and originally called "You'll Never Get Rich," The Phil Silvers Show is classic situation comedy. There's no character arc, no lessons learned, no sentimental denouement; just laughs, and plenty of 'em. The typical episode finds Bilko on the make--usually, though not exclusively, for money--and generally ends with him holding the short end of his own shtick. (They don't all follow the formula; a hilarious exception is "The Court Martial," in which Bilko is ordered to defend a chimpanzee that the Army has somehow managed to enlist and is now trying to expel.) Silvers, a master at both verbal and physical comedy, is the focal point, of course. But the ensemble work, featuring Bilko's usual stooges from the Fort Baxter motor pool (Barbella, Doberman, Paparelli), his favorite victims (cf. Col. Hall), and occasional guest stars (episodes with Fred Gwynne, Alan Alda, and Dick Van Dyke are included in this set), is uniformly brilliant, the acting is seemingly effortless, and the pleasure they take in their work is palpable. Bottom line: these shows may have been produced 50 years ago, but the jillions of TV comedies that followed have never improved on them. Among the many quality bonus features are a full-length "lost audition show" (recorded on kinescope), appearances by Silvers on Ed Sullivan and Dick Cavett's programs, audio commentary on some episodes, and more. Some fans will undoubtedly quibble with the episode selection; with only 18 of the more than 140 produced shows included here, it's inevitable that a few favorites didn't make the cut. Still, until (or unless) Paramount gets around to releasing each individual season, this set is a must-have. --Sam Graham

Phil Silvers plays Ernie Bilko, a motor pool sgt in the US army. He is based at Fort Baxter, a small camp hidden away near a town called Roseville, in the wilds of Kansas. The camp is supposedly run by Colonel Hall, but it's Bilko that calls the shots. Whether it's poker games, betting on the horses, or when ever he was short of money, which was just about all the time, getting his platoon to cough up. Along with the other Sgt's from the Mess Hall, Signals, and Supply, Bilko is continually at war with Colonel Hall, who is desperately trying to put a stop to the gambling once and for all.

For so many years I had been looking for this set and all I ever found were cheap reprints of reprints of pirated British TV shows or wherever they originated from. This set is a must buy for the comedy classics TV buff. Great Stuff!

It's the old Bilko. The nostalgia pours back
My 15 year old son said "There's something wrong with the DVD, its all grainy" but I told him the DVD was fine; that's the quality of TV productions back then.
It's great to see Phil Silvers again as the masterful, conniving Master Sergeant.

A good selection of episodes.......2007-03-27

Along with most Bilko fans I would have picked a different assortment of episodes. These are the only available selection on DVD in the U.S. and I am glad to have them. Years ago I taped virtually every episode when it was broadcast as a marathon on "T.V. Land". I should have gone through and reviewed each episode at the time. I have misplaced many of those recordings for various reasons but let me say for the record that many of the shows were less than stellar. There are about 30 of the 142 shows that were true gems. Another 30-40 were very good, the remainder were just o.k. Of course an O.K. Bilko Show was still more entertaining than most of the junk on t.v. today. Remember the talent pool was more rich in the old days. There were usually only three channels on television in the 50's! I very much recommend this set and I too would buy a complete series on DVD if it was offered. The video and audio quality is quite good.

This is a 3 disc set with 18 episodes on it of classic Bilko very funny very interesting with DVD extras. After this wonderful viewing experience I hope more classic Bilko episodes will come onto DVD format.

If the repeated use of the phrase "man-whore" is your recipe for hilarity, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo is your movie. Rob Schneider (The Hot Chick, The Animal) returns as the hapless male prostitute, in this case lured back into the man-whore lifestyle in order to investigate the killings of European man-whores. His former pimp T.J. (Eddie Griffin, Undercover Brother) has set up shop in Amsterdam, where he finds himself accused of both the man-whore murders and of being a homosexual. From this slender, ridiculous premise springs dozens of gags about flatulence, breasts, and male sexual organs--in fact, the number of phallus stand-ins (noses, swords, man-whore of the year awards) would seem excessive to Aristophanes. And yet, despite all things crass and tawdry, Schneider remains bizarrely innocent, and this movie, like the first one, feels inexplicably sweet. I was curious about this movie for one reason, and one reason only: the prominent position it holds in Roger Ebert's new (and wonderful) book "Your Movie Sucks." Ebert does not often mention his Pulitzer Prize, but did so in the introduction to his new book in defense of a fellow journalist with his extremely pointed and apt statement "Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks." There is a much longer story than that behind this statement, and I highly recommend you read the book for a full account of the happenings that brought it about.

As far as the movie goes, it is vile, disgusting, repulsive, and worst of all decidedly not funny: it utterly fails to live up to the standards Schneider sets in his other films.

The film begins with an explanation of how Deuce's wife was eaten on their honeymoon by a shark. To prove his undying love for her, he carries one of her prosthetic legs around with him wherever he goes (until the closing credits when an old woman makes it into a bong, anyway). Deuce (Schneider) is befriended by his old friend T.J. (Eddie Griffin) who now lives in Amsterdam. T.J. is the alleged straight man (sort of) and is wrongly accused of murder. He also eats French fries and fights off an eight pound housecat in what was but the first of many revolting scenes. Deuce falls for Eva, a fellow ichthyologist, and is entranced by her sketch of a "Sudanese Sweetlips," which actually is a real fish. In the meantime, we discover that Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is hilarious; this foreshadows the unpleasant case of dwarf tossing later in the film.

Deuce gets to date a variety of women in his undercover occupation. I will hit the highlights by mentioning that he gets to wear diapers for a giantess; he escorts a woman who has had a laryngectomy to a fancy restaurant, and is able to provoke a fountain of red wine to shoot from the stoma in her neck (do not inquire about her case of hiccups or the subsequent use of the stoma in the plot resolution...it is so heinous, I will not discuss the matter further); finally he escorts a woman wearing a veil who explains that she is from Chernobyl, and the her mother worked in the nuclear power plant while she was pregnant. She then elaborates further that she is wearing the veil because "instead of a nose, I was born with an appendage on my face." Need I say more? Do not even think about her sneezing fit on the dance floor. Really. Don't think about it.

The movie's alleged plot involves a killer of male prostitutes loose in Amsterdam, and the action peaks at an awards ceremony. The plot is resolved by the worst use of swordplay in screen history (and a special guest appearance by the stoma of fate.) The film then concludes with the worst ever "where are they now" vignettes ever committed to celluloid.

The DVD has many extras, including a "making of" short (see how the nasal appendage was created!), a casting reel, and an extra on the making of T.J.'s "Float Crib." It was more bearable than the film, but only marginally so.

After viewing this film (surely Schneider's very worst) I can only think that Roger Ebert was extremely generous in his appraisal. I would not recommend this film to any human being or other vertebrate of any kind.

If I had it my way, I'd give this movie "Zero" (0) stars! Unfortunately, I had to rate it! Rob Schneider is one of those actors that could be dropped in a pile of human feces and come out smelling like a rose without any ounce of shame! That's what I think of this movie! It is repugnant! Offensive! Disgusting! And above all, one of the worst movies ever made in the last 25 years! Not only was this sequel unnecessary, it was a total insult to the movie viewing public! Movie goers deserve beter! Much Better!

Okay, overall this may not be as good as the first one, but what it lacks in a storyline it makes up for in jokes. Deuce is forced to be a gigolo once again, to help his poor buddy TJ out of a jam. Along the way, Deuce meets even more bizarre characters and the jokes dare go that extra step further. Imagine what happens when a woman with a penis for a nose sneezes..!!
While the cast this time round are mostly all unknowns, there a couple of funny performances by Deuce's rival male gigolos. Look out especially for Norm MacDonald who plays a male gigolo from Scotland.
I encourage all fans of the first and all Happy Madison movies to purchase this movie as you will not be disappointed. It is not loaded with special features, but there are a few short featurette's to keep you satisfied.

Comedy Central examines the mind of the common man in the outrageous comedy series "The Man Show". Hosts Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel offer a unique male perspective on important topics that men care about like sports, porn, nagging wives, beer and women jumping on trampolines. Carolla and Kimmel expose the truth on many important male issues and drive political correctness out the door. "The Man Show" is a hilarious half hour skit-based comedy series that explores the best and worst traits of men. Hosts Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel are hilarious and have good comic chemistry. The comedy series also stars the buxom Juggy Dance Squad and the beer-guzzling emcee Bill "The Fox" Foster who passed away after the first season. Some of the show's recurring sketches include "Man-Ovations", "Movies Men Don't Want to See" and "Household Hints from Adult Film Stars". With its brand of sophomoric humor and eye-catching dancers, "The Man Show" had a good run on Comedy Central but by the fifth season, the comedy series fell apart and was shortly cancelled with the new hosts.

If you like watching two guys acting like complete idiots and hot girls jumping around on trampolines, then "The Man Show: The Complete First Season" is certainly a worthy purchase. All 22 episodes are presented in its original full screen format. The picture quality and 2.0 Dolby Digital sound aren't overwhelming but still rather pleasant. Among special features, both volumes include some never-before-seen comic sketches and extended montages of girls bouncing around on trampolines. Overall, "The Man Show: The Complete First Season" gets a "B".

While Conan's fifth anniversary special might have been a nice addition to this disc, this 10th Anniversary celebration is an uproarious recap, sure to have newcomers scratching their heads at such Late Night characters as Pimpbot 5000 and the Masturbating Bear. Along with the classic clips (William Shatner forgetting the name of his signature Star Trek character, a practical joke that sends former sidekick Andy Richter naked onto the set of Today), there are celebrity cameos by Ben Stiller and Mr. T and appearances by Will Ferrell and Jack Black, and breakout star Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. The generous bonus footage collects even more signature moments not included in the special. So, to quote O'Brien's huckster in a commercial spoof: You want to laugh?
