This long-delayed spoof about the "true story" behind the Bay of Pigs was released shortly after Thirteen Days, another movie about a Cuban (missile) crisis. The latter represented something of a comeback for Kevin Costner (after For Love of the Game) and director Roger Donaldson (after Dante's Peak). For Douglas McGrath, who cowrote Bullets Over Broadway (1994) and directed Emma (1996), Company Man represents something of a comedown. First off, it's just not very funny--and becomes even less so during its 81-minute running time. Secondly, McGrath, who has appeared in several Woody Allen films, is simply not charismatic enough to carry a picture--not this one, at any rate. Then there's the matter of a talented supporting cast in the service of material that feels both underwritten and overedited (possibly against the directors' wishes).
To his credit, McGrath is more of a verbal comedian (in over-enunciated Kevin Spacey mold) than a physical one. Consequently, he (grammar teacher-turned-CIA agent Quimp) and Allen (Quimp's superior) get the best lines. The physical gags mostly fall flat. Sigourney Weaver (Quimp's nagging wife), John Turturro (his overzealous partner), and Alan Cumming (deposed leader Batista) are hamstrung by this emphasis on the physical (and one-dimensional). Ultimately, McGrath (and cowriter-director Peter Askin) attempts to align Company Man with nebbish-in-the-middle satires like Allen's Bananas (1971) rather than serious-minded fare like Thirteen Days. He only proves that more time spent working for the Master (Allen)--rather than vice versa--should be in order. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Pierce Brosnan gives one of his finest performances in The Matador, a low-key buddy comedy with an agreeably sinister twist. Light-years from his former James Bond image, Brosnan is unshaven, unnerved and unpredictable as freelance assassin Julian Noble, who encounters desperate businessman Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) in the bar of a modern Mexico City hotel. Danny is intrigued when Julian reveals that he's a "facilitator of fatalities," and his wife "Bean" (Hope Davis) is equally fascinated when Julian shows up unexpectedly, six months later, at Danny's home in Denver. Having lost his touch as a reliable hit-man, Julian needs Danny's help with "one last job," but the logistics of Julian's lethal profession (involving an employer played by Philip Baker Hall) are secondary to writer-director Richard Shepard's offbeat, slightly uneven character study, which gives Kinnear and Brosnan a memorable opportunity to riff on their established screen personas. In making Julian a likable yet tormented drifter who's made a habit of "running from any emotion," Brosnan creates an edgy yet sympathetic character as mysterious as he is fun to be around; if you're going to befriend a hired killer, you could do far worse than a guy like Julian. As Brosnan plays him, he's worthy of a sequel, but The Matador is the kind of entertainingly quirky movie that's a hard act to follow. --Jeff Shannon

However, months later, back in Denver, the doorbell rings at the Wright residence, and Danny and his wife Bean (Hope Davis) find Julian on their doorstep, a desperate, broken man. What else can they do, but to take him in?

This is what happens after the life of Bond.......2007-07-02
I see that it's tough for actors who play cultural icons to get work once they end that phase of their careers. George Reeves committed suicide after failing to find work after his 50's portrayal of Superman on TV. Adam West never got a good role after the campy '60's "Batman." Even Sean Connery had a period of obscurity after his James Bond period. This brings us to Pierce Brosnan, another James Bond: movie-star handsome, perfect in the role of the urbane, suave, and emotionally distant Agent 007. Brosnan tried to move beyond this typecasting with "The Tailor of Panama," but didn't quite succeed. Going to a more extreme character in "The Matador," Brosnan proves he might have a career ahead of him. He's going to need more plausible scripts, though, because none of the key plot points in "The Matador" are credible.
I still don't know why they call it a thriller when there wasn't any tension or suspense in here. You kind of knew what was coming except, perhaps, in several instances and there wasn't much tension or suspense in those instances. One of the good aspects of this film was the decision for Brosnan to roughen up his looks. His scraggly beard, bad hair, yellowed teeth, and the wild edge in his smile make him a credible, burnt-out, hit man. Additionally, he takes to his role with gusto. His fear as he begins to have nervous breakdowns, his desperate attempts to booze and whore his way back to sanity, and his life-saving grab to make a friend out of mild-mannered, middle-class Danny, are believably pathetic. I felt twinges of sympathy for this killer going over the edge. Their initial and unlikely acquaintance is believable only because it's in Mexico. The relationship between these two males is under constantly episodic humorous tension throughout the movie which is a plus in this film. Hope Davis also turns in a fine minor performance as Kinnear's character's wife.
The script was pretty good, the bright colors and bold cinematography and banners are reminiscent, in a good way, of Quentin Tarantino at his best. To some extent, the scenic and cinematographic movement is what gives the movie a strong sense of action as much as character movement. The plot almost feels as if it has a life independent of the characters; as if the characters are acting out a minor sequence in a bigger sweep of `Story,' which almost seems like a `Character' in itself. Sound weird? Well, I guess it is, in a way. But it sure seems to work for me. Still, it's a good buddy-flick that's worth your time but try to leave Bond out of your mind before you watch this.
This Could Have Been Bonds Future.......2007-06-14
When I saw the preview for this movie I just had to see it. I don't know why but it just looked funny and entertaining. Maybe it was seeing Brosnan acting like a complete nut in every scene. The movie is about a bored and lonely assassin Julian Noble (Brosnan) who ends up stalking a traveling salesman named Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear). The thing is that Julian met Danny at a bar in Mexico and likes his personality so now he wants to be friends. Julian has bigger problems though like he can't finish his jobs because he freezes up every time he tries to pull the trigger.
Because of this his boss has put out a hit on him so Julian leaves Mexico and shows up on Danny's front door step. What makes matters worse is not only is Julian having a mid life crisis but he has terrible manners and has a problem drinking too much. Danny has to put up with his craziness while trying to spend time with his wife on christmas. Julian finally tells Danny why he really came to his home and tells him he needs his help to complete with his last job. The two set out on a very exciting and funny journey to rescue Julian from death and send him to a relaxing paradise to retire in.
What I like most about The Matador is the comedy that couldn't have been accomplished without Brosnans hysterical but fitting look. He played Julian on point and really got the comedic depressing feeling of his character. The story has a pretty good twist to it but nothing too surprising. You might even guess the end before it gets there as it bites off some other more serious assassin films. The cast did a good job but for some reason you could feel something missing. One more character equally as crazy as Julian Noble or even crazier maybe could have gave the movie that extra something. It has great picture and sound quality, definitely no problems there. Basically The Matador didn't really have flaws but it was just a 4 star performance. From the story to the comedy it was 4 stars, as funny as it is it isn't 5 star bust out crying laughing. If you have time go get it or maybe it's still on TV but this will most likely be enjoyed.
Awesome Movie - Deserves Wide Acclaim.......2007-06-03
This movie was great. Has an unusual plot device that works well in sustaining suspense effectively. Brilliant acting from Kinnear and Brosnan.
Highly Recommended.
The Matador is a film not to be missed (unless you're a bull).......2007-05-27
The Matador is a slightly off-kilter, pleasantly surprising movie that gently leads the viewer on a tour of unpredictability. Richard Shepard wrote and directed this little gem of a film in his well-deserved departure from smaller independent films to a full-budgeted film. He makes great use of his new resources, recruiting cinematographer David Tattersall (Die Another Day, Star Wars I-III, The Green Mile). Tattersall makes every frame thrilling and adds even more to Brosnan and Kinnear's performances.
Now that we're on the subject, Pierce Brosnan really shines as hitman Julian Noble, a character that seems to have been written for him to make a perfect transition, shedding his James Bond image without completely losing it. As Noble begins to fall apart, Brosnan gets to show that not only is he charming, and deboinair, he's also a brilliant actor with great control on a depth of emotions. His Golden Globe nomination was well deserved.
Greg Kinnear gives an equally transfixing performance as Danny Wright, a down on his luck business man who meets Julian on a trip to Mexico, where the two share an unidentifiable bond. Kinnear has an almost unique ability in Hollywood to portray a general sense of optimism, while also relaying a clear sense of desperation to the audience. He shines in this film in a prelude to the down-on-his-luck character he plays in Little Miss Sunshine.
Hope Davis doesn't have as big a role as either of the male leads, but she makes a strong showing and through her ability to translate the script into clear emotions she manages to stand out as more than just a "wife" character. The three main cast members really make this film work.
In the end, surprisingly, The Matador is a slightly sentimental - without being cheesy - examination of friendship, love, devotion, and doing what's right. The audience will leave the film feeling satisfied, entertained, and a little bit better about life in general. Don't miss out on this one.
The DVD includes several deleted scenes and a making of documentary that offers some insight into the director's take on the film. It's all interesting, but the film stands on its own.
Brosnan funny? Who knew!.......2007-04-30
I could not believe that Pierce Brosnan could be funny! He wasn't even this funny in *Remington Steele*. Greg Kinnear was a compatible actor with Brosnan.
Brosnan plays Julian Noble, who is an assassin or rather a "facilitator of fatilities". He travels around the world to eliminate his targets. When he gets to Mexico City, he meets Danny Wright (Kinnear) at a hotel bar over margaritas. Danny is an unlucky businessman who is trying to get back on the rise.
This particular introduction is the best part. They're trying to have conversation yet they keep misunderstanding each other, even to the point of being completely rude. Yet they stay around to continue chatting. Finally, to smooth things over, Julian invites Danny to a bullfight event. There, Julian reveals what he does. Of course, thinking Julian is joking, Danny doesn't believe him. At this point, things are even funnier especially when Julian asks Danny to help him out on a target in Mexico City.
The weekend quickly comes to an end. Julian continues to travel around the world to do his job. However, Julian makes a mistake and then another. On the run, Julian shows up at Danny's residence in Denver...6 months later. Once again, Julian asks Danny for his help. Of course, they go through this whole drama that was played out earlier.
There are a few things why I loved this movie. Brosnan plays Julian well, nothing similar to Steele or James Bond. Julian is mysterious. He bops women but then there are hints where he just might be bisexual. There's one particular scene that keeps coming up but isn't really shown completely. You can't help but wonder what happened. Julian is wacky as he'll walking around a hotel in speedos and cowboy boots. Kinnear is equally funny as this naive man trying to survive in this cruel world. He's a trusting man who cannot decipher truth from fiction. And Julian wants this man help him out on a "job"?!?!
So, check out *The Matador* and enjoy a few chuckles.

Some comedy is like a scalpel; the Scary Movie series is a hand grenade, spewing bodily fluids and big-breasted women in all directions as they lampoon the latest horror. In Scary Movie 4's case, the main targets are War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw, and Tom Cruise jumping all over Oprah's couch (the scariest of the lot). Along the way, potshots get taken at non-horror fare like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby, as well as obvious targets like Michael Jackson and George W. Bush, among others. Anna Faris (Lost in Translation) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners) return as the central characters wandering through a crazy quilt of horror scenarios, joined by Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) doing a dead-on parody of Cruise at his most manic. Cameos include everyone from Charlie Sheen to Shaquille O'Neal to Carmen Electra. Some of it's funny, some of it's not, but there's a generally buoyant zaniness that comes from director David Zucker, one of the creators of Airplane!, which started the whole firehose-of-jokes aesthetic. --Bret Fetzer

Great Parody........2007-07-03
After seeing a preview for Scary Movie 4, I knew that I had to have it. It was simply hilarious. I thought that they would run out of material after the third movie, but this was surely just as funny.
I definitely chuckled more than a few time at the amusements that this video ensued. I especially loved the Tom Cruise/Oprah ending, and the Brokeback Mountain sequence.
Ok, So this movie may not be the best movie I have ever seen, but it did make me laugh for a couple of hours.
Scary Movie 4 is a great parody!
A comedy that pokes fun at scary movies........2007-06-13
If you've seen any of the 4 Scary Movies, you know what they're about. They're comedies that poke fun at scary movies. They don't have any real story line. They're just there to make us laugh.
So what's to like about this movie? There are quite a few jokes that had me laughing out loud. Some of the funny parts remind me of my own weird sense of humor and it's good to see a movie that contains not-so-typical/predictable jokes. Also, it's good to see the same old characters again in this movie (if you've seen Scary Movie 2, you'll appreciate the fact that the "Take my little land!" guy is in this one as well).
What's not to like about this movie? There's a couple of things. First, if you're not a horror movie fan (or if you haven't been to the movie theatre in a while), you may not understand some of the jokes and/or part of the plot. The majority of this movie is based on the movie "The Grudge" and "War of the Worlds". If you haven't seen both of these movies (or at least know in general what they are about), it's easy to get confused. Also, as I said above, if you're expecting a really good story line, don't even bother. All of the movies in the Scary Movie line are basically just random scenes thrown together to gain some laughs that will come together to create an ending (and not even a good one at that).
My rating: 3.5/5 stars. If you've seen any of the other Scary Movies, you'll know what to expect. If you haven't seen them or you aren't a horror movie fan, you may be disappointed.
Cornball Sophmoric Parody.......2007-06-05
I actually founds some parts of this film amusing. I'm a big "war of the world's" fan, so when I saw this film was going to spoof it, I checked it out. Yeah, I'm not a fan of the potty humor (the scene with the old woman getting the sponge bath), or homophobic jokes (Brokeback Mountain parody), some of this film had some amusing bits. Tom on the Winfrey show. The Michael Jackson 'cameo' when the Tripods are attacking, the scene where "Tom" is trying to take the minivan.
Other scenes were just lame. (The beginning Saw scene), The scene in the Village.
I really can't see rating this film any more than 2 stars. It was Trash TV. But some of the scenes were well done, and I thought the actors: particularly the Tom character and his daughter (dead ringer for the kid in the actual movie), did an excellent job.
Recommend this film for adults only. Too much sex and potty humor for the kiddies.
Hit and Miss Comedy, Just Average.......2007-05-28
"Scary Movie" franchise still goes on, with lots of parodies about the recent hit movies such as "War of the Worlds" "SAW" "The Village" and "The Grudge." David Zucker who also helmed the second sequel "Scary Movie 3" throws in lots of gags with his trademark zany humor. He just cannot sit still behind the camera. He is always trying to find something to joke about and the results are hit-and-miss.
Each gag or parody should be seen for yourself. Some are very funny, some unfunny and misguided, and all in all, well, just good. One sad thing for me is that the glorious days of comedies in the 1980s like "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" are gone. Funny as they are, the gags of "Scary Movie 4" still look repetitious and predictable for the fans like me who have seen these classics 20 years ago.
Maybe the filmmakers should have chosen some other materials for parody. The combined story of sci-fi big budget "War of the Worlds" and Japanese horror remake "The Grudge" is not likely to work, so are the occasional flashbacks that are inserted for the sole purpose of introducing another parody of "Million Dollar Baby" and others. Or maybe some jokes are not just funny when a little girl (spoof of Dakota Fanning's screaming girl in "WOTW") is forced to suffer numerous painful experiences repeatedly. Or just maybe, Charlie Sheen (who appears as cameo here) should be in the lead instead of Craig Bierko, who is, I think, miscast as "Tom Ryan."
The film makes fun of at least three internationally famous people - Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, and President of the United States of America (the last one done by Leslie Nielsen). I don't say it's not funny - yes, I laughed, I admit - but the targets are too familiar and the jokes are too obvious. The many cameos (including James Earl Jones, Doctor Phil McGraw and many others) are surely interesting to see, but some originality in the plot or humor would not hurt.
I really like comedies of David Zucker and Jim Abrahams, and lovely Anna Faris who has returned to the film as "Cindy." She shows her comedic talent again, and the film is benefited from its surprisingly good (and costly) production designs and special effects for this genre. What it needs is the laughs up to the standard of the past masterpieces.
Fun movie with a boatload of Special Features on the DVD.......2007-04-04
I've enjoyed the Scary Movie franchise. I know some are sick of it but fot me it's good fun. This time they focused making fun of "Saw", "War of the Worlds", "BrokeBack Mountain", and "Grudge" to name a few.
The gags work some of the time and others they don't. One of my favorites jokes had to be that killer intro mocking "The War of the Worlds" and the whole bit with Tripod. Other jokes aren't as funny because they're jokes that don't leave much surprise. The Tom Cruise bashing in the Oprah show is a riot.
The DVD for the flick is extensive and if you liked the movie is well worth watching. A lot of deleted scenes, bloopers, commentary, and makings on the film. Many of the deleted scenes are alternate or extended scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. The makings on the movie are done well. The cast clearly loves the franchise and hopes it never ends. All in all a decent dvd if you saw the movie but what more than what the theatrical release gave you.

Chestnut.......2007-07-02
I rented this movie to watch with my 5 yr old grandaughter who just got her first puppy a few months ago. I thought there was a very wrong message sent in the beginning of the movie when the young girl ran out in traffic to save the dog. Then at the end of the movie, I thought it was totally unnecessary to the plot and too tramatic for a younger child to have to see Chestnut stabbed by the robbers and then bleeding profusely. Come on, movie-makers, you shouldn't have done that.
A Great Kids Movie.......2007-02-20
We rented this movie first as a fluke and my 8 yr old ended up watching it 4 times over that 2 day period. She said it was her all time favorite movie so I went ahead and bought it for her. She watches it over and over. It is a sweet, heart-warming story with no foul language or inappropriateness at all. The mother is a wonderful example of a loving, understanding mom and the girls are just super sweet. We have an adopted daughter so if you are concerned about the orphan theme, you needn't be; we were very pleased with it's upbeat take on adoption. Would heartily recommend for any family!
This is a great movie!!.......2007-01-07
This movie was a real surprise for me. My daughter picked it out at the video store and I had never even heard of it. We took a chance and we loved the movie. It is a very heart warming story. There are a couple of very tear jerking moments. My eight year old daughter absolutely loved it. She can't stop talking about it. It was very moving for her. I highly recommend it for any household with girls.
CHARMING KIDS AND DOG MOVIE.......2007-01-07
If you have a little girl around the house this is a great movie to watch. Two orphaned sisters are adopted by a childless NYC couple and move from their rural orphanage to an affluent high-rise overlooking Central Park. The plot thickens with their smuggling their Great Dane puppy in with them. As the puppy grows, so do their problems. Cynical adults will have a lot of problems with the plausibility of all this, but a little suspension of disbelief with go a long way toward making this an enjoyable movie.
The movie's best feature are the two sisters played by Makenzie Vega {younger sister of Alexa of "Spy Kids" fame} and Abigail Breslin, now famous for "Little Miss Sunshine". The two girls really carry the movie.
A lot of light-hearted family fun.
Blaine in Seattle.
Great story for young girls.......2007-01-01
This is a very heart-warming story that my neices and I really enjoyed. I had never heard of this movie until Dec 18th when my neices saw it previewed on TV. It hasn't received much publicity which surprises me. The story line was predictable to me but still very enjoyable. The two sisters are orphaned, spend time in an orphanage, then adopted. But this part of the story is shown in a way that is not upsetting to my neices (ages 4 and 6.) They watched it over and over. It held their attention - it did not have any boring parts. Really fast-paced and cute. I would reccommend this for all young girls!

Opposites are forced to attract in Along Came Polly, a dose of featherweight fluff that could've been better and could've been worse--surely no pairing of Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston can be a complete waste of time, right? Faint praise indeed, but fans of these mainstream funny-folk will enjoy this movie as a lazy-weekend distraction. Ben's a newlywed insurance risk-assessment analyst whose wife (Debra Messing, in a throwaway role) betrays him on their honeymoon. His uptight, play-it-safe lifestyle (which includes acute aversion to germs and irritable bowel syndrome) makes him seemingly incompatible with the spontaneous, free-spirited Polly (Aniston), but writer-director John Hamburg (whose writing credits include the previous Stiller hits Meet the Parents and Zoolander) is determined to give them at least the appearance of romantic potential. No such luck. You will, however, get a few laughs from supporting players Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bryan Brown, and Alec Baldwin. --Jeff Shannon

Not a bad flick; good for a laugh........2007-06-21
I have always been a fan of Ben Stiller since I first saw him, and he always seems to be good for a laugh, no matter how bad the actual movie itself may be.
With that being said, I do want to say one thing, Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston have NO chemistry on screen; I mean absolute zero chemistry together! Stiller and Debra Messing however, do have pretty good chemistry together and I think having them as a couple for a bit longer would have been better.
The movie does have its laughs and in my opinion is worth a rent or two. The blind ferret, as many have said does steal the screen when present and also provides nice comic relief. The scuba instructor for me, was thje funniest part, as the accent is absolutely hilarious.
As I mentioned, its good for a rent and some good cheesy laughs, but the lack of chemistry between Stiller and Aniston really dampens the whole movie. I'm not a big fan of Aniston myself and maybe I'm just being a bit biased, but I believe it was her portrayel of her character that made the whole thing a bit forced and fake.
Ben and Jennifer are a cute couple.......2007-03-18
This movie is very funny and Ben and Jennifer look great being together instead of Ben and Debra and I adore Jennifer's ferret who is blind. I am a huge fan of Jennifer and my BF is a huge fan of Ben so what does that tell you??!! 5 stars for this movie!!
Ben Stiller Fans Should Give it A Try.......2007-03-05
I love this movie and it is more than I hoped it would be. The biggest problem I had with the movie is that Philip Seymour Hoffman felt really out of place in this movie and did a really bad Jack Black imitation. The entire time, he acts just like Jack Black, it is almost if Jack turned down the role that was written for him. If you are a fan of Ben Stiller, you need to see this movie because I couldn't stop laughing and I have a feeling that it will be the same for you. I've seen this movie many times and it is still as funny as the first time I watched it. Overall, maybe not as good as some of his other films, but still really funny.
expected more from this film.......2007-01-28
After watching a few trailers I felt I had to see it for myself as it looked so witty, quaint, charming and enjoyable. I was wrong. Although humorous in parts it only just cracked a smile, which is a shame because it could have been better.
I love Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller and I can't explain why this combination didn't work, but it really didn't. Perhaps it was the chemistry between them? Or maybe it was the weak storyline and bad jokes? It is worth a rental, but please don't waste money on buying this DVD.

I caught this film while channel surfing after I'd finished "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" on Pay Per View. After watching a few minutes I thought, these are the same characters.
If Uma Thurman's G-girl didn't have any powers in "Ex-Girlfriend" she'd be a lot like Jennifer Aniston's ferret-loving Polly Prince. Ben Stiller plays a risk assessor for an insurance agency who's just as dorky and introverted as Luke Wilson's "Super Ex" architect. And instead of Rainn Wilson ("The Office") as the boorish best friend dishing out bad relationship advice, "Polly" has Philip Seymore Hoffman ("Capote") as a washed-up child-star slob, egging Stiller to slap Aniston's rear during sex and ask "Who's your daddy?" It's this exchange that sets up the film's conflict: Aniston, repulsed by the comment, boots him out of her apartment. Stiller then has to learn to see Polly through his own eyes and prove his love before he loses her in the third act.
"Along Came Polly" is as safe, generic and cut-and-paste as a romantic comedy can be. Surprising, since director/screenwriter John Hamburg provided plenty of laughs in "Meet the Parents," and "Zoolander" was at least somewhat original, if a little stinky. That's not to say "Polly" isn't beyond repair: there are several amusing sight gags involving Aniston's blind ferret and Stiller's indigestion; Aniston and her salsa instructor give Stiller several opportunities to make light of his inadequacies (something he's a master at). Bryan Brown ("FX") is entertaining as Stiller's potential insuree, an Austrailian millionaire who also happens to be an extreme sports enthusiast. And Hoffman gave me a lot of laughs when he tried to be the lead instead of Judas in the Hell's Kitchen community theater version of "Jesus Christ Superstar."
So, "Along Came Polly" is worth a shot if you catch it on TV, but ultimately forgettable. Actually, the soundtrack is better than the movie, though it's still nothing to swoon over.

Deadly Therapy.......2006-10-30
My wife insisted we see this because it is a movie in which her therapist played a featured part! So groaning I said, fine, whatever, and in all good faith we sat back to enjoy the marvelous countryside of Alaska and to drink in this story of a man, Forrest Taft, who at the beginning of the picture works on a huge oil rig for a wicked corporation, and who later changes his mind about how he's living his life. People say Steven Segall never changes, but here's a movie in which he undertakes the biggest journey of them all, cleansing his soul in the process. He's not good at acting, but that's neither here nor there. If you ask me, his direction of this movie was spot on and he should definitely have gotten more offers to direct. It's just a shame his leading actor was so wooden and chubby.
Forrest Taft has one great friend aboard the oil rig, a crotchety old coot who's always berating Forrest for forgetting the little people and sucking up to the big boys. Blinded by greed, Forrest doesn't listen to the old man. Then one day, the old man threatens to blow whistles on Michael Caine and Caine has him horribly tortured and murdered by John C. McGinley. They break each of his fingers with an ivory tusk! Probably whalebone, eh? Then they castrated him with a plumbing tool! I can still hear the screams of the old guy--nobody deserves to die that way.
All in search of a computer disk in which the old codger had named names and shown that the corporation, in a hurry to exercise mining rights granted them twenty years ago by unthinking tribal leaders, the corporation has used unsafe equipment that has caused the death of several innocent workers.
When Forrest Taft learns of this death, he goes a little crazy and begins a vision quest in which he becomes a bear. Not the kind of bear we have here in San Francisco, but a spirit bear, and a Native wise man tells him, "You are a bear, you have a destiny to fulfill." Blown up by Caine's henchmen and left for dead, Taft is rescued by a pack of polar bear hunting Indians, who tie him to their dog sled and take him home to a beautiful native hut on multilevels, where toothless hags grin lopsidedly and Forrest really trips out when the chief plucks bullets out of his spine with eagle-like talons.
It becomes a race between starting up the oil rig, and demolishing it in a sort of ecoterrorist act. Seagal the director makes sure our sympathies lie with the right cause. Joan Chen is on hand as the chief's daughter, she's great of course but why didn't they think of hiring a Native American actress, would that have been difficult, Warner Brothers? I don't know, it just rang false to me. Otherwise the movie showed a roughhouse world of hard drinking, hard working, hard loving factory workers all sweating blood and tears doing great work except in the service of evil, corrupt people determined to destroy our beautiful planet.
The movie has Billy Bob Thornton prominently in the credits, but he gets to say about three things. The movie's credits say his character is called "Homer Carlton," but how do they know?
Anyhow enough nitpicking, see it for yourself! Add a star if YOUR therapist is in the movie too.
Pleased.......2006-08-19
I like most of Segal's works because they have a message that deals with issues that affect the environment.
this had to done as a tax rightoff.......2006-06-27
not even michael caine could save this BLEEDING HEART(in more ways than one) about the raping of the alaskaen interior by an oil company is just so bad that you wonder how it ever got made. steven seagal walks through it in a half daze(he also directed)and kills more pepple than any accident by an oil company! the final "speach" is the only part of the movie that works(but only because it's so funny, not because it's good)! movies like this are what killed mr. seagals movie chances!!
REALLY,REALLY BAD!!!!!!!!!!
Good action and story.......2006-03-20
I love the backgroud of Stevens characters and this one was good. As an action movie this was great. If you want to see truth watch the news. If ou want enterntainment, watch On deadly ground.

He-man done Anime-style..........2007-05-16
...that's the best way to describe this series. This is one of those, if it hadn't been associated with the He-man universe, the concept could have stood alone as its own series. I will admit, the animation is good and the writing is ok, but the bottom line that will always hurt this series is that it's not He-man and should never have carried the title.
A great DVD.......2007-03-31
This is a great dvd for a relatively unknown series. If your a fan of the original show or the Mike Young series give this one a try. It is a well written show that actually has continuity in its episodes. The dvd itself features two of the best documentarys yet one covering the making of the new adventures and the other covering the MV Creations comics/mini comics that came with figures which are well done.
A Great dvd for an excellent series.......2006-12-29
The New Adventures of He-Man is a series that has unfortunately been badmouthed a fair bit over the years, usually by people who watched one episode, decided it was too different, and branded it 'awful'. This has put the series at somewhat of a disadvantage over time, with people judging it without even watching it(and I note this has spread to amazon with two people reviewing this set before it was even released). Admittedly the character desgins are very different to the filmation versions, but if you can get past the characters differences and focus on the storytelling you should be able to appreciate this as an exciting continuation of the lives of He-Man and Skeletor.
He-Man himself is the same character, voiced by the ever excellent Gary Chalk. Skeletor is quite different to the old version, more of a comedian here, he is no longer the bumbling oaf seen towards the end of the old series. He actually manages to defeat He-Man and drive him into exile in a multi part storyline, as well as gaining some other victories(and a new costume). He's comparable to Mark Hamill's Joker from Batman: The Animated Series, and is a very well developed villain who usually steals the show when on screen.
While the old series is a classic, it was weak in many areas. Characters were often toned down and a childish tone taken, while moral messages took over the episodes, not to mention the overuse of stock footage animation and almost total lack of continuity. The New Adventures maintained a strong continuity, with multi part storylines with more depth than seen before. The animated is of a superior quality, while more anime influenced.
There are an abundance of extras as with all the BCI sets, this one featuring a documentary where the writers talk about the creation of the series, and a documentary talking about the various comics of the He-Man franchise. Overall a great set, if you come to this series with an open mind, you'll find it a good continuation of the He-Man series with a different spin and some nice throwbacks to the classic series every so often.
Great DVD set of an average series........2006-12-27
He-man and the Masters of the Universe was my best loved TV show and toys of childhood. I love the fact now that all of the original masters of the universe cartoons have been release on DVD. Now, I get a chance to buy a series that I did not get to watch much of, The new adventures of he-man. I was in High school by the time these came out, so I had little time for Cartoons. I remember trying to watch them when I could, but did not see that many episodes. Well, here's my chance. I must say, the cartoons and drawings are nothing special, a very "japanimation" feel to them, as opposed to the quality of the charaters in the first series. The stories are about the same, good vrs. evil, skeletor vrs he-man. Skeletor in this version is so much more sarcastic, almost sickeningly. I never had seen the first episode before, and I liked the tie into the original story. Alas, I am dissapointed that cringor/battlecat was not brought along into this series, but I'll take what I can get. I give these creators credit for trying to tackle a difficult task of writing new he-man stories, but it just not the same as the original. Included in this DVD set are two more cards for the set (13 & 14), as well as the episode guide. Great DVD set and 5 stars for effort, they are even incoperating the Spine art into the other 4 original he-man sets and using it to bridge over to the she-ra spine art. Hopefully, someone will release the 2002 He-man revamp from cartoon network as well in the future. Check this one out, keep an open mind.
..Why?!!.......2006-12-23
I am a child of the 80's who grew up watching both He-Man and She-Ra's cartoon adventures. Sure, some plots were fantastic, but the writers and producers had always remembered that they wanted their product to make lots of money. They understood that little kids aren't going to gravitate towards the truly horrible. A product without customer support ultimately can't make any money.
It can be argued that the original series itself largely was one big toy advertisement, but this 'update' accomplishes the previously unheard of: It retrospectively makes the ill-fated live-action box office bomb with Dolph Lundgreen now look like a quality masterpiece simply by comparison. Having accidentally seen an episode of this 'new' series, my skin no longer crawls with disgust from having seen 1987's live action feature film!
Sure, lots of extras are included in this package (actually meriting a star), but why was there tampering with something already very awesome in it's original form?
Perhaps the production of this 'new' series actually was supposed to be a form of revenge-punishment against a colleague (or a couple of them) in the entertainment industry? I honestly can't think of another reason why a successful concept was violated in such a blatant manner.
