Though a bit stodgy, this 1932 film adaptation of a Philip Barry play features the star of the original Broadway production: Leslie Howard. While Barry had later, greater successes with film versions of his plays Holiday and The Philadelphia Story, The Animal Kingdom is something of a blueprint for those better-known comedies. Howard plays book publisher Tom Collier, a bohemian at heart and an enthusiast for great literature and artistic integrity. His lover, Daisy Sage (Ann Harding), is an equally open-minded artist. But while she's off in Paris, Tom considers making a show of respectability, and marries socialite Cee Henry (Myrna Loy), who intends to groom Tom for polite society. Cee's ambition and Tom's conflicts set the stage for one of Barry's comedies of manners, as desire and responsibility square off. Unimaginatively directed by Edward H. Griffith, the production is anchored to its stage-bound origins, but Barry's dialogue and the charming performances make it all worthwhile. --Tom Keogh

Despite its box-office failure in 1981, Dragonslayer was gradually recognized as one of the finest fantasies to emerge from the post-Star Wars boom in special effects. It's still one of the best adventures of its kind, featuring one of the most fearsome fire-breathing serpents in movie history. Ominously named Vermithrax Pejorative, this ill-tempered monster terrorizes the peasantry of sixth-century England, feeding on maidens sacrificed by a duplicitous king until a sorcerer's apprentice named Galen (Peter MacNicol, long before Ally McBeal) is recruited as a reluctant hero. Aided by a tenacious beauty (Caitlin Clarke) and his resurrected mentor (Ralph Richardson), Galen confronts the soaring beast in a breathtaking climax. Employing a then-innovative technique called Go-Motion to animate the dragon, the special effects are still dazzling, and stunning locations in Scotland and Wales allow director Matthew Robbins (cowriter of Steven Spielberg's feature debut, The Sugarland Express) to maintain a vivid atmosphere for the wealth of movie magic. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Imagine "Jaws" in Medieval Times, except with a Dragon.......2007-04-29

I caught about 10-15 minutes of "Dragonslayer" on TV a few months back, which was my first exposure to this film, and I determined right then and there to eventually purchase it. When I finally bought it I watched it TWICE, something I rarely do.

THE STORY: A medieval kingdom is harrassed by a dragon, apparently the last of its species. The people decide to appease the horrific beast with regular sacrifices of virgin maidens. The virgins are selected through a questionable lottery system. When the King's daughter is picked for sacrifice, the monarch employs a sorcerer's apprentice, Peter MacNicol, to slay the dragon.

"Dragonslayer" takes the "Jaws" route by not fully showing the beast until well into the second hour of the film. Prior to that revealing moment the film expertly builds up a heap of horrific anticipation concerning the creature. The first virgin sacrifice scene is particularly terrifying. When we finally DO see the monster it's definitely not a let down. Many viewers attest that this dragon is the best dragon to ever appear in film, even though the picture was made in 1981.

I've heard some complain that the protagonist, MacNicol, was wrong for the role. Nothing could be further from the truth. He's easy to relate to because he's a flawed human being with naive, boyish qualities, not a larger-than-life superhero (like, say, Conan or Beastmaster). I've also heard some complain that the heroine, Caitlin Clarke, is too "man-ish" looking. Well, duh, that fits into the whole sacrificial lottery plot. When Caitlin ultimately and uncertainly dons a dress and make-up she's woman enough.

The Dark Age sets/costumes/locations really impressed me. If you're in the mood for a top-of-the-line medieval flick with castles, dungeons, forests, villages, fair maidens, kings, sorcerers, etc. this is the one to see.

"Dragonslayer" was an inexplicable flop when it was released in 1981, perhaps due to the glut of similar-themed pictures at the time. Regardless, it can now be treasured on DVD. It took me over 25 years to witness its magnificence but I finally did.

4 out of 5 stars DRAGONSLAYER: The movie with the best dragon........2007-04-03

I was 9 years old when this movie first came out in 1981, but I never got to see it. DRAGONSLAYER has both excellent production values and outstanding special effects that still hold up very well today. The set locations (Scotland and Wales) I found to be especially beautiful and attractive and very fitting for the medieval feel of the picture. The film's dragon, creatively named "Vermithrax Pejorative", is wholly convincing and adds immensely to the story and, I think, is the STAR of the show. The pyrotechnics (fire effects) are also handled superbly throughout. Dennis Muren was Visual Effect Supervisor for DRAGONSLAYER. The previous year (1980) Muren had worked on George Lucas' THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and the following year (1982) he supervised E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL for Steven Spieldberg.
The only real drawback to the picture, I think, is the casting for the lead; Peter MacNicol. MacNicol's presence as a young dragon-slaying hero is weak and just does not fit him. He's not the hero type. I would've much rather seen someone like Matthew Broderick play the part. The means by which the dragon is destroyed is also disappointing. He's not killed by the DRAGONSLAYER, but by an exploding wizard (?) ... I don't get it. The DVD also does not have any extras, no trailers, no making-of features and no commentaries, just the bare bones. Regardless, the film is worth seeing, if not just for the outstanding dragon effects.

5 out of 5 stars All Hail Vermithrax Pejorative!.......2007-03-28

I was eleven when this film came out, and it was instantly one of my favorites - and still manages to be.

The dragon Vermithrax is hands down the best dragon ever created for film. There has not been a single movie with a dragon since that has managed to create the look and feel of what a dragon should be better than Vermithrax. Reign of Fire's creatures were close, but Vermithrax takes the title.

On that note, I can't help feel sorry for the old girl. Sure, people think she's evil, but really she was just a mother looking out for her young. Little ones gotta eat, y'know. People aren't always the top of the food chain, something we always seem to forget.

A good family movie if your kids are say 11 or older. Yes, there's violence, yes, there's a baby dragon gobbling up a girl (eating through her ankle more specifically) but it's no more violent or gory than the recent LOTR movies.

If you love Dragons, you'll love Dragonslayer.

4 out of 5 stars One of the smallest big-budget films I have seen........2007-02-28

"Dragonslayer" is one of my favorite 1980's fantasy pieces. Sadly, it was obscured by the bigger flicks--"Clash of the Titans," "The Dark Crystal," "Never-Ending Story" and the perennial "Princess Bride,"--plus the other bigger-budget SF films, Star Trek II-V and Star Wars V-VI. For me, I like that it is not the big budget spectacular that the other films were, and did not have the distracting all-star gala-feel that "Titans" had. Similar to the City of Reno, it is the one of the smallest big-budget films I have seen.

Hence, we are treated to two unknowns--Peter MacNicol (Ghostbusters II, Alley McBeal, 24) and Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Darth Sidious) in a "don't blink or you'll miss him" role as Brother Jacobus. Lucas would agree--this enhances the story, since you focus on the film, rather then the distracting game of "Where's Waldo" that familiar faces can breed.

The film is essentially a milieu piece--the faux Middle English middle England that is the basis for all post-Tolkien fantasy. But the theme is the arresting thing: it is about the corrupt leadership that makes a deal with the devil (or the dragon in this story) to keep the peace at the price of a pentannual sacrifice of a fair virgin.

This deal itself is corrupt--suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune instead of taking up arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them--but the corruption runs deeper. First, the king and other nobility exempt their daughters, sending the peasant girls instead. Much like wartime drafts.

The second issue is how this set up affects Valerian. When her father disguises her as a boy to avoid the draft-lottery, he inadvertently alienates her from herself and he sexuality. When she dons the dress at the effigy-burning, she embraces who she is, especially her sexuality. The dance with Galen is symbolically obvious.

Lastly, Casiodorus Rex is so base, so superficial that he claims credit for slaying the dragon. In retrospect, this was to be expected.

This film is full of heroics. We have Galan mantleing himself as a wizard--no angst, no refusals of the call, but brash gusto. Valerian courageously end-runs around the corrupt king and hires a dragonslayer. The Blacksmith forges the spear behind the back of said corrupt king. (This is a perfect Daddy-Daughter team-up.) Princess Elspeth gives her life in order to save the peasants--a reverse Marie Antoinette. And then Ulrich the Wizard takes James bond's advice and dies twice to slay the dragon.

The coda-ending was a gag, but the gag worked, since it rounded out the theme of the corrupt system, and Galan and Valrian turning their back to the whole mess, and making their way . . . and with magic in the air.

The special effects still stand up. Instead of doing the Harryhausen stop-motion (as was done in "Titans"), they opted for go-motion, puppetry, and animation. The overall effect is eerily realistic, and aportent of things to come. In fact, the SFX stand up to the next great dragon movie, "Reign of Fire."

The film is rated PG, but I suggest a PG-13 rating, due to the graphic deaths of Princess Elspeth and Brother Jacobus (the gnawing lizardlings and the charred body were too much), and the "revealing" skinny-dipping scene. Parents beware.

What is on this short DVD is super funny but feel cheated it wasn't longer! A few years back I had purchased a Johnny Carson with animals on VHS and was much longer than this 35 minutes! So many of Johnny & the animals were missing out of here. Can remember at least 3 skits from VHS that was not included on this DVD. If there is a volume 2 I certainly will not be purchasing because of this rip-off.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Acting.......2006-09-15

The Animal Kingdom features one of the more shocking elements of the pre-code era. It revolves around a man, his former mistress, and his current wife. Leslie Howard plays Tom Collier, a wealthy man whose family wishes he would settle down and be more dignified. He does so with Cecilia (Myrna Loy), a somewhat haughty, controlling woman from high society. However, in order to make his marriage work, his mistress Daisy (Ann Harding) breaks ties with him. He is hurt by the separation and begins to pursue her without realizing his true feelings for her.

The relationships between the characters are very believable and engrossing. It helps that the stars are phenomenal actors. Howard is particularly wonderful. His acting is subtle but charming, intelligent, and powerful. Everything he says seems important and thoughtful, even if he's delivering a casual response. Harding complements him well. Although some of her gestures seem very overt and stereotypical, it is difficult not to believe them to be true. She is entirely genuine and agreeable.

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Print........2006-08-22

The Alpha Version of this Historic film, the first shown on the opening night of Radio City Music Hall, is exceptional, and the best Alpha print I have ever seen. This is also a smart, intelligent film. More prints like this one and Millie could give Alpha a better reputation than it currently has.

4 out of 5 stars Back when talkies had dialogue..........2003-01-02

Nice one. Leslie Howard is a lot more interesting in this than he ever was as Ashley Wilkes. Perenially sympathetic Myrna Loy is sexy and not so nice. Ann Harding and William Gargan are quite solid. The dialogue is snappy and great. The acting is first rate. The conflict itself doesn't have so much merit. This is rather a shallow and quickly told story about a man choosing depth over surface. But still the movie is a lot more vibrant than some of today's fare, at once a little bit thoughtful and entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars SOLID EARLY TALKIE........2002-09-06

Philip Barry's very successful stage play was the basis for this well-acted romantic vehicle which should still appeal to the sophisticated and intellectual. Howard plays a rich publisher who leaves his artist-mistress to marry socially active Loy, only to discover that the security of married life doesn't exist: his wife turns out to be a Lorelei who's encouraging an affair with another man (Hamilton)... In an ironic and interesting contrast, Loy acts more like his mistress and Harding is more wife-like. Howard's acting expertise is shown to advantage here, he being caught in a classic triangle and eventually realising just how essentially shallow Loy really is and what a prize he had in Harding. Ann Harding gives her usual sensitively sincere performance and although Myrna Loy was not yet considered star material when she was given the role of Cecilia, she clearly gives a masterful portrayal of the flirtatious vixen. There is a splendidly amusing performance given by William Gargan as Regan the butler: at a party, he pours himself drinks and oafishly makes himself at home, acting as if he belonged among the elite company. It is, however, Howard who carries the film: he was the epitome of the sensitive gentleman in films such as this in the decade of the 1930's.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!.......2002-08-20

In my opinion, a great film adaptation of Philip Barry's Play, with a luminous performance by grand actress, Ann Harding; Myrna Loy is excellent too, as Leslie Howard's alluring, sensual and manipulative wife; Leslie Howard's good as usual, and all of them get fine support from Neil Hamilton, Ilka Chase, Henry Stephenson, and especially, William Gargan, who is hilarious as a joke of a butler! (he's an ex-fighter). Perhaps it may be regarded as kind of talky and stagy by today's standards, but anyway it's pretty adult stuff with great dialogues and subtleties, and a great example of what could be done with a fine script and cast, before the Production Code was fully enforced in 1934.

5 out of 5 stars The Underdark of Narnia.......2007-04-16

By the time this book takes place, Eustace has almost shirked his old snotty self and become, like Edmund, a valiant young man. Introduced is Jill, the newest Daughter of Eve to be catapulted into Narnia, landing in Aslan's world with her own baggage and set of peculiar hang-ups and problems. Let the transformations begin!
This is probably the darkest and gloomiest of the Narnian Chronicles, most of it taking place in an subteranean world of gnomes and lightless creatures. The visit to the land of the giants is also a somewhat scary span of chapters, with betrayal and helplessness being central themes. But of course good old Aslan has a path for the children to follow and a valuable lesson for them to learn, though the two adventurers find it almost impossible to carry it out as they were instructed too. A trmendously well thought out fantasy story which imparts much understanding about religion and about how God works his magic in our world. Faith and redemption are also central themes as the children are tested by the decision to trust the cursed knight, and the knight is freed from a witch's treacherous spell.

4 out of 5 stars Get out of the chair.......2007-01-28

Years before Walden Media debuted their big-budget version of "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe," the BBC created their own Narnia Chronicles. Despite some goofy prosthetics and a shoestring budget, this is easily the best of the three movies, with excellent acting, pacing, and even some decent special effects.

The story opens at a trendy school that Eustace Scrubb attends. But a garden shed doorway leads Eustace and his bullied schoolmate Jill to Aslan's country. But after Eustace is almost killed because of Jill, the god-lion Aslan gives girl an assignment and four signs to follow. King Caspian is now an old, dying man with no heir to follow him, because his son was lured away by a strange serpentine temptress long ago.

Jill and Eustace team up with a gloomy Marshwiggle, Puddleglum, who serves as their guide as they go to north Narnia. Along the way they must deal with carnivorous giants, enormous bridges and bad weather. But the enigmatic signs that Aslan gave Jill are hard to follow -- and they soon find that the missing Prince is ensnared in a web of madness and magic.

Don't expect this to be a mere copy of the past two movies -- the Pevensies are nowhere to be seen, and old faves like Caspian, Aslan and Trumpkin only have cameos. Sure, they ride owls and hang out with giants. But this is a grimmer, darker story, with a cataclysmic finale and a tight, sometimes harrowing storyline.

The past two Narnia movies suffered from hokey special effects and some spotty acting. "The Silver Chair" cleans all that up, trimming the special effects edges and focusing on the more majestic sets, costumes and scripting. And for the most part, it's quite a success. Even the flashbacks to the queen's death and Rilian's disappearance are heartrending and quietly effective.

There are a few flaws -- for a paradise, Aslan's country looks pretty scrubby and brown. And the final battle with the Emerald Witch is downright silly, with a giant snake puppet twisting around on the floor. But the special effects are infinitely improved in this one, ranging from convincing giants to some genuinely harrowing moments on a giant bridge.

Lewis had become a bit less hamhanded with the allegory and Christian symbolism by this time. Instead, he gives jabs at anything-goes attitudes and nihilism. Additionally, he creates one of the most intense and outstanding scenes of the entire Chronicles, with the Witch playing elaborate brain games with Rilian and the kids, slowly convincing them that all they know and believe is a lie -- including the sun and the world above ground.

Thwaites and Power both give excellent, understated performances as two kids who bicker constantly, but really care about each other, and Tom Baker (of "Dr Who" fame) is glorious as the perpetually pessimistic Marshwiggle. Barbara Kellerman, alas, is still hamming it up, with lots of over-the-top laughter, screeching, cooing and snarling.

Despite Kellerman and some primitive CGI, "The Silver Chair" is probably the best of the three BBC Narnia movies, with its darker storyline and excellent lead acting.

Barely visible to the human eye, a truly fascinating universe lives in the bush and savannas of Africa. Here, creatures small, smaller and nearly invisible share a world with gigantic animals. Usually overlooked, often feared and despised, theirs may be a small world, but it’s an important one. Remarkable photography reveals some of the hundreds of invertebrates that thrive and support lives far larger than their own. Give this fascinating and tiny world a closer look and you’ll discover the big wonders of small creatures.
