T. Theopholis North (Anthony Edwards) is an aspiring adventurer making do as a tutor and reader to the upper-crust in 1920s Newport, Rhode Island, in Danny Huston's enchanting if rough-edged adaptation of Thornton Wilder's comic novel. Equally at home with the rich (Robert Mitchum's blustery but big-hearted philosopher millionaire) and the poor (butler and all-around-town character Harry Dean Stanton), the young man with an electric personality (literally) becomes a liberator, a matchmaker, a reluctant faith healer, and a tonic for a community in the thrall of charlatans. Huston, son of the great John Huston (who helped script the film), is not a deft filmmaker, but he has a welcoming warmth and a contagious affection for his colorful characters. If his cast (which includes Lauren Bacall, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Anjelica Huston, Danny's sister) tends to overplay their parts, it's in the genial spirit of this lighthearted lark. --Sean Axmaker

Each of the 9 films in the collection shows why Hitchcock is regarded as one of Hollywood's most esteemed and important directors, and also brings legendary stars to the digital front including Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, Montgomery Clift and many others.

Strangers on a Train - En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but can't get a divorce from his wife. So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it won't be easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia appears in this film. The extra features included on the DVD are: Alternate 'preview' version of the film; Commentary by director Peter Bogdanovich, Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stephano, Strangers on a Train author Patricia Highsmith and biographer Andrew Wilson; New making-of documentary Strangers on a Train: A Hitchcock Classic, with Farley Granger, film historian Richard Schickel, Patricia Hitchcock O'Connell and other Hitchcock family members and colleagues recalling the making of this suspense landmark; Three intriguing featurettes: The Hitchcocks on Hitch, Strangers on a Train: The Victim's P.O.V., Strangers on a Train by M. Night Shyamalan; Alfred Hitchcock's Historical Meeting, a vintage newsreel.

Each DVD will be presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition and will include the original theatrical trailer, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

As a long time fan of Hitchcock, I am always looking for more. I have approx. 20 of his films on DVD. This collection has some that I had never seen before. In addition, the "making of" special features are great for someone who wants to know what made Hitch so unique as a film director. I have (and will) spend many hours viewing these discs.

But as North gains a reputation as a savior, he simultaneously endures the wrath of the local doctor, who labels him a charlatan. Based on Thornton Wilder's novel THEOPHILUS NORTH, this is, in its own quiet way, a magical picture. It's about a young college man who gives off electrical charges from his body (an old parlor trick); he comes to Newport one season early in the 20th century and begins to transform people. There is an exuberance and optimism that rub off on these stuffy summer people, and they begin to come to life in a way they've never experienced before. And, of course, there are those electrical charges, which some residents swear to as having magical healing powers. As reality, this movie would never work, but it has a fairy tale quality about it that transcends believability and allows us to just enjoy the proceedings. Definitely worth a watch.

With Anthony Edwerds as Mr. North, Robert Mitchum as James Bosworth, Lauren Bacall as Amilia Crinston and Anjelica Huston as Persis Bosworth-Tennyson you realy can't go rong. A great movie, the only thing that kept it from the fifth star is how Persis ran of with Mr. North almost at first glance. It's basicly about this guy, Mr. North, and what he does with the electricty he stores in his body. It is also about who hates him because of it. With great acting by Robert Mitchum, Lauren Bacall and Anjelica Huston, don't pass this one up.

5 out of 5 stars A Harmless & Fun "Feel-Good" film..........2003-08-30

Just got the DVD, and forgot how wonderfully entertaining this film really is. Danny Huston's directorial debut was met with mixed reaction, but this film never fails to entertain. It's simple, sweet and a bit profound (based on Thornton Wilder) and the attention to 1920's period detail is intact. The most fun thing is the exemplary ensemble cast that Mr. Huston assembled (no doubt with help from father, John, who was co-writer). Anjelica Huston, Mary Stuart Masterson, Tammy Grimes, Virginia Madsen, Harry Dean Stanton, the wonderful Lauren Bacall, and, most notably, the GREAT Robert Mitchum. Holding it all together,in a wonderfully confident fashion, is a young Anthony Edwards in the title role. He is an Everyman, knowing he is better than his lot, talented and confident enough to fulfill his dream. A fine cameo from the great playwright, Christopher Durang, is also a pleasure. After a day of beating your brains out and wondering why life isn't better, watch this film and you'll feel good. Apparently, Mr. North was in all the right places at the right time... Hey! It COULD happen...(?)

A delightful film! Anthony Edwards is supported by a tremendous cast of characters including Robert Mitchum, Mary Stuart Masterson, Anjelica Huston, Lauren Bacall, Harry Dean Stanton, and Virgina Madsen. Based on a novel by Thornton Wilder and directed by Danny Huston, the film, filmed on location in Newport, Rhode Island, captures the charm and innocence of the 1920s. Anthony Edwards carries this film and makes the film, which would otherwise be simply mediocre, come to life. A charming film well worth watching.

MR & MRS NORTH is a very entertaining television series from the 1950s starring Barbara Britton and Richard Denning as the crime-solving couple of the title. The show was highlighted by snappy dialogue and intriguing story premises. Jerry and Pamela North find heinous crimes literally at every turn in this great classic TV show. Includes 4 episodes:

"Million Dollar Coffin" - Jerry fantasises about retrieving a set of correspondence from a buried Revolution patriot.

"Model for Murder" - Whilst Pam enrolls in a prestigious modeling academy, a deadly love triangle puts her in danger. Guest-starring Carolyn Jones (complete with Veronica Lake-hairstyle!).

"The Man Who Came to Murder" - The Norths' romantic getaway is spoiled by the discovery of a dead body. Guest-starring Lee Patrick.

"Mask of Hate" - The Norths' friends Gordon and Marion take center-stage with a very well-written episode detailing what happens when Gordon discovers Marion is having an affair.

Fans of Barbara Britton won't be disappointed. Alpha has released several volumes from this show, and the prints used are the normal quality for Public Domain - average but watchable.

A top series for fans of vintage television.

Mr. & Mrs. North is a very early TV series that enjoyed a long run. That they are being released on DVD all these years later is fortunate indeed as in viewing this fourth DVD of the series shows how well a series can hold up for todays viewer. This series had good acting & well written scripts for the light mystery/comedy genere.Barbara Britton & Richard Denning were perfect in the roles. 4 episodes per DVD means there should be more to come as this once popular series finds a new audiance.
One wishes producers of other early shows would show as much interest as Mr.& Mrs. Norths, & release other great early TV shows. This is one series worth owning.

This'll date me: I used to watch Pam and Jerry North on black and white tv as a kid. So this is a bit of a nostalgia trip for me, and I may rate them higher than I should. But in my opinion, they definately stack up well against the likes of "Monk" (which I also mostly enjoy). The humor is a little corny. Pam is a Gracie Allen type "screwy dame", but the mysteries are ok, and you enjoy spending time with the people. It's hard to say better than that about any entertainment!

MR & MRS NORTH is a very entertaining television series from the 1950s starring Barbara Britton and Richard Denning as the crime-solving couple of the title. The show was highlighted by snappy dialogue and intriguing story premises. Jerry and Pamela North find heinous crimes literally at every turn in this great classic TV show. Includes 4 episodes:

- A day at the races turns sour when Jerry and Pamela discover the dead body of one of the jockeys in the trunk of their car.

- Jerry and Pamela find themselves in the middle of their own horror movie, when they decide to accompany a young friend to her Aunt's country mansion.

- Jerry's life comes under threat from a mysterious assassin.

- A fashion show turns dead-serious when one of the catwalk lovelies is mercilessly stabbed. Guest starring Fifi D'Orsay.

Fans of Barbara Britton won't be disappointed. Alpha has released several volumes from this show, and the prints used are the normal quality for Public Domain - average but watchable. The third episode retains some original broadcast footage (Britton and Denning with Julia Meade hawking various Revlon products) which adds to the overall value.

A top series for fans of vintage television.

MR & MRS NORTH is a very entertaining television series from the 1950s starring Barbara Britton and Richard Denning as the crime-solving couple of the title. The show was highlighted by snappy dialogue and intriguing story premises. Jerry and Pamela North find heinous crimes literally at every turn in this great classic TV show. Includes 4 episodes:

"Flight 217" - While about to board a flight back from Mexico City, Jerry and Pamela are unaware that their luggage contains a ticking time-bomb...

"Murder For Sale" - While stranded in the middle of nowhere, the Norths are thrown headlong into a terrifying murder plot.

"Two-Faced" - Jerry becomes caught up in an ordeal with an escaped murderer.

"Breakout" - While interviewing a renowned criminal in prison, a riot breaks out with the Norths held as hostages.

Fans of Barbara Britton won't be disappointed. Alpha has released several volumes from this show, and the prints used are the normal quality for Public Domain - average but watchable.

A top series for fans of vintage television.

    MR & MRS NORTH was a fantastic series combining the best elements of mystery and comedy and provided Barbara Britton with her best role. Book publisher and amateur sleuth Jerry North (Richard Denning) and his wife Pam (Barbara Britton) have a nose for trouble...a fact that is proven time and again, as the pair are thrown headlong into dangerous murder plots and thrilling whodunnits. Richard Denning and Barbara Britton are absolute perfection in the title roles and the show is largely carried by their fine performances. Alpha has released several volumes of episodes from this oft-neglected series, and this 6th volume includes:

    "Beauty Prize" - Pam becomes the victim of mistaken identity when a famous model is murdered. A very fun episode where Britton also gets to play doomed model Kitty Pomeroy.

    "Dead Man's Tale" - Jerry and Pam get mixed up in a shady gambling syndicate. Guest starring Carolyn Jones.

    "Comic Strip Tease" - Pam and Jerry decide to help kindly neighbourhood shopkeeper Mrs Helsir (Else Neft) when she becomes victimised by a violent gang of teens. The print of this episode is amazing with crystal-clear picture and no dirt or debris whatsoever.

    "Reunion" - Jerry's weekend return to his alma mater takes a bizarre turn when he and Pam are held hostage by a former schoolmate.

      - Pam hires a butler who proves to be a veritable target for murder and intrigue.

      - Jerry and Pam are called to visit a boxer training camp which sets the scene for an intriguing new mystery for the pair to solve.

      - An author's invitation to a country house dissolves into a nightmare for Pamela.

      Fans of Barbara Britton won't be disappointed. Alpha has released several volumes from this show, and the prints used are the normal quality for Public Domain - average but watchable.
