Fun to Watch!.......2005-04-14
As a parent, I welcome any Strawberry Shortcake DVD into my home because I know that my girls will not only be entertained but get a lesson or two as well. And the songs are so catchy we bought the SSC Seaberry Beach Party Music CD to jam to in the car!
In Seaberry Beach Party, Gingersnap, Angel Cake, and Orange Blossom listen to the roar of the ocean in SSC's seashells. SSC looks through her "remembering book" and shares two sea tales. In the first story, "Coco Calypso and the Mystery of the Seaberry Shore", the seaberries are disappearing. Coco, who lives on the beach, solves the mystery and meets a new friend, Seaberry Delight, who lives in the lagoon underwater. Other characters featured in this episode are Papaya Parrot, Rainbow Sherbert, and Blueberry Muffin.
What is more precious than gold? Find out in the second story. Rainbow and Blueberry haggle over sand dollars they find on the beach. To stop the friends from fighting, Seaberry Delight tells them "The Legend of the Lost Treasure." SSC and her friends are mermaids who face a greedy Sea Serpent hoarding the precious "solid gold" sand dollars.
Songs on this DVD:
"Seaberry Shore"
"I'll Treasure You"
"Wondertime"
"A Tropical Day" - as a separate music video
Special Features:
Introduces Berry Special Friends Coco Calypso, Papaya Parrot, Seaberry Delight, Kiwi Turtle
Berry Special Places: virtual tour of Seaberry Shore
MER-BERRY DELICIOUS!!!.......2005-03-20
THIS IS AN AWESOME DVD FOR STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE/MERMAID FANS OF ALL AGES. COOL CHARACTERS, CATCHY SONGS, VIVID COLORS. GREAT ANIMATION! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE. THE GIRLS IMAGINE THEMSELVES AS MERMAIDS IN AN UNDERSEA ADVENTURE. IN MY OPINION, THEY SHOULD RELEASE A WHOLE SERIES OF STORIES AND DVD'S OF THE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE GIRLS AS MERMAIDS.
A Tropical Treat.......2005-02-18
I am a huge SSC fan, and when I found out there was a new DVD for the SSC collection, I grabbed it right away. The stories are based on the idea of Strawberry's 4 new friends, Blueberry, Seaberry, Rainbow, and Coco. The one story involves a mysterious new friend that steals Coco's Seaberries, while the other story involves a berry special mermaid adventure that involves the friends searching for a berry special treasure. The colors are bright and act as sweet candy to the eye. The stories are energetic and teach children a leson on making friends and not being greedy.I enjoyed this very much:}

Mel Gibson's film debut is a low-budget Australian beach movie with a heart of darkness (an alternate title is Coast of Terror). Set in the 1950s, the film follows the exploits of four youths on a holiday road trip that takes an ugly turn. The end product is a sort of Beach Blanket Bingo in hell. Panoramic Endless Summer-type shots of Mel and the boys hanging 10 and scenes of teens bopping at a rock & roll hop frame a plot involving statutory rape and murder. Gibson plays Scollop, the carefree, sweet one in the group. He's a genuine beach boy: blond and tan and obsessed with surfing. Sandy (John Jarratt), a dour fellow on a last fling before marriage, asks Scollop what he's going to be doing in 10 years' time. Scollop replies: "I'll be doing something in 10 years' time. So I guess in 10 years' time that's what I'll be doing." It's logic worthy of Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Scollop's twin in spirit. Gibson's ease in front of the camera and natural acting talent shine through even here. He brings his trademark breezy charm and a surprising emotional range to this beach bum role. It's no wonder that he went on to become an international superstar. --Laura Mirsky
Customer Reviews:
Dull city.......2003-12-21
The main selling point of this DVD is that it stars Mel Gibson. This has to be one of Gibson's very first films - even before the ROAD WARRIOR movies. The shot of Gibson that is on the cover is dated much later than the young, skinny actor who appears in this movie. Also, Gibson only has a supporting role in the film. To surmise that he's the leading actor would be incorrect.
Not a whole lot happens with the plot, so they seemingly stretch just about every scene out to make it "feature length." They also throw in a lot of scenes apparently at random without any thought to story cohesion.
Of course, the film is also about as low budget as low-budget movies get. I swear at times I thought I was watching a film made by a bunch of high schoolers. The picture quality is pretty rough - even by 1970s standards.
The only people who just might like to pick up this DVD are die-hard Gibson fans. There are those who might enjoy seeing him in a movie filmed in his native Australia where he still has his thick native accent. So, with that in mind, there are perhaps some who might find some nostalgia in buying this one.
If Gibson had not starred in this movie, I very much doubt it would have ever made it to DVD in the 1st place. This is an obscure movie, and clearly there is a REASON it's obscure: it's dull, bland & boring!
The best debut I've ever seen.......2001-08-10
A very interesting movie and great acting for a debut film, if you can get past the very odd camera angles and ocasional dumb old joke this is a worth while great film Mel Gibson all the way
1973 filming.......2001-05-25
The plot of the story was, i admit, enticing and well thought out. However, the film quality is horrible. Mel Gibson himself stated that he wished the film never saw daylight. It's a cheap flick you can find in bargain bins for a buck fifty, i know, thats where i got mine. The only reason it's part of my collection is because im a die hard and dedicated mel fan...thats it. You can't get through the entire movie without turning it off...the sound is horrible, and the picture is very unclear. Very low grade flick.
Tim.......2000-08-16
This was by far the best Mel Gibson performance I have ever seen. His depth and breadth of character was amazing. I have to admit I giggled through the first viewing(did we really dress like that in the 70's?) but I've seen it six times and read the book by Colleen McCullough. By the way, a 24 year old Mel in short shorts is a bonus!
Mel and Piper Laurie put forth great performances as a mildly retarded handyman and an emotionally retarded middle-aged spinster. Tim sees the world simply as made up of beautiful details, while Mary views it from afar inside her coccoon of solitude. Tim brings out emotion and caring in Mary that she had lived without her entire life, while she awakens intellectual freedom within him by teaching him to read and write. Their friendship begins quite platonically, and it is refreshing to experience innocent love and mutual respect rather than what we have put before us today on video. Their friendship develops and deepens as they spend more and more time together. Truly a sweet, sweet movie and a great performance by Mel who's Adonis-like looks are overwhelming.
Piper Laurie is great as Mary who evolves from a matriarchal frump into a loving, sharing woman all due to this person who puts no demands on her and loves and respects her simply for who she is. It will make you reminisce about your first kiss and all the innocence and inner discovery that led up to it.

Abigail's Party.......2007-07-03
Based on a theater play produced for the BBC, Leigh's dark-humored situational farce examines a group of people feebly attempting to have a good time although they are all secretly miserable. As Beverly, Steadman (wife of the director) is aggressively jolly and controlling, not to mention drunk and openly flirtatious with Salthouse's simmering Tony. For every awkward moment, another drink is poured. This is an ensemble piece, and the interplay between the five actors, confined to a single living-room stage, is exquisitely handled by Leigh. Crash this "Party" for a harshly funny look at failed marriage and the cruelties of passive aggression.
Abigal's Party.......2007-03-09
Awesome play. Saw it in London 2x. The DVD is nearly as enjoyable as the live performance.
Storyline reminds me a lot of Who's Affraid of Virginia Wolf.
Small mind at work.......2005-11-11
This film and 'Life is Sweet' (I haven't seen any other Mike Leigh films) gave me a creeping feeling in my stomach. Mainly this was caused by the sheer stupidity of his working class characters. And I mean stupid - this is the fundamental message of these films, that working class people are thick. This stupidity leads to emotional crudeness and a total lack of warmth. I grew up in a working class family in London and this is not my main experience of the people. Yes, they could be direct (thank God!) but they were also often clever (note: not intellectual) and extremely supportive of family and friends. You have to ask yourself why this man keeps making films about a class of people he considers to be stupid and crude. If the subjects of his films were Jews or West Indians, there would be all hell to pay, and I don't suppose he would get screened. But film-makers and actors in this country are largely middle-class and will therefore quite happily support what appears to be a shared prejudice. And the actors aren't much better, with their horribly caricaturised (and largely unrealistic) accents. But I guess they enjoy getting their hands dirty with Leigh, especially if there's an award at the end of it, when they can turn up at the ceremony looking properly middle-class with educated accent restored, just in case anyone was under the impression they were actually like those awful people in the film. In short, there's a nasty, bitter mind at work behind these films, on a long quest, I suspect, to prove he's better than those ghastly Hollywood showmen by creating 'realistic' characters he can keep constrained in a sub-human fantasy world of his own creation.
5 Starts to Mike Leigh, 1 star to DVD.......2005-10-17
the conversation is purposely dull, yet it indeed sounds funny. this is the mike leigh's magic. the only disappointment about this piece is that the quality of the image is really poor. it feels like playing the video tape upon the vcr of 20 years of age. this, in a way, does make you feel like you are watching a 70's programme, perhaps.
Black comedy at its very best..........2004-12-28
Like "The Office" 25 years later, "Abigail's Party" is such perfectly targeted, close to the truth humour that it makes you laugh out loud and cringe with embarrassment at the same time. In a setting that represents everyone's nightmare of mid 70's middle class life it sucks you into its brilliantly drawn world and then leaves you as some sort of unwelcome voyeur in the cocktail party from hell. Like most of the people there, you want to get out but you can't, and as things go from bad to worse you end up totally transfixed by the sheer awfulness of the situation you find yourself in.
With characters whose lives are so desperately frustrating that real aggression lies only just below the surface, this is black comedy at its very best precisely because it's much too close to reality for comfort. You can't help but laugh but you know that you're laughing at these people and their tragically depressing lives, and by the "sting in the tail" ending you really wish you hadn't. Brilliantly written, directed and acted "Abigail's Party" is far more than a humorous period piece and, quite rightly, stands up there as one of the very best British TV plays of the past thirty years.

Customer Reviews:
Would've given it six stars!.......2003-04-18
I saw this film years ago and it has stuck in my mind ever since. Excellent! It's just a small group of people in a room, but it's far far more entertaining than any multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbuster.
IS IT REAL SILVER.......2001-07-23
THIS IS A GREAT SAD FUNNY FILM THAT SIMPLY MUST BE WATCHED,THE FUNNIEST CHARACTER BEING BEVERLEY DYA KNOW WHAT I MEAN? ITS FANTASTIC ACTUALLY,LITTLE TOP UP SUE?,YOUR BED ARRIVED YET ANGE?PLUMBERS OVERALLS,SHE MAKES ME DIE YA KNOW,TAKE ANOTHER SUE,SAVE ME COMING BACK,THE LINES ARE AMAZING BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN MAKE YOURSELF SIT THROUGH IT WHICH WILL BE WORTH IT AS THERE ARE SO MANY COMEDIC MOMENTS FROM THE WAY ANGELAS NECLACE MOVES WHEN SHE TALKS TO SUE GETTING UP TO DANCE WITH LAWRENCE. AN EXTREMELY CAMP AND FUNNY FILM EYEAH.
CULT MOVIE.......2000-08-03
This has to be one of the funniest films ever to be shown on british tv. I first saw this film back in the 70's, and it really made an impact on me and my friends. I now have the video, and still after all these years, my family and I get together to watch this all over again. Alison Steadman gives a wonderful performance, please keep looking out for her cutting glances. With the music of donna summer and demis russos playing all the way through this play...adds to the ambience This is definatly a cult video.....you will catch yourself repeating lines from this film ...ie: "are you allright sue" "is he always violant" etc etc.. PLEASE BUY THIS VIDEO...it will be used time and time again, in the end you will know the lines (like we do) completly off by heart......
Nasty Party Indeed.......2000-04-28
Well, what do you expect when you have someone like Beverly as your hostess? When the said bored housewife decides to hold a dinner party inviting neighbours you can bet she wants a more insidious and vicious bit of fun than a game of charads.
She dresses in low-cut tops, flirts with her neighbour's husband and does everything she possibly can to humiliate and put down her helpless guests. And you can tell she holds her prim and proper husband Laurence in contempt as well. This is very much a play/film where sub-text and interplay are essential to make it worthwhile viewing and if you don't watch stolen glances and listen to the odd remark carefully then you might miss important bits; so if you prefer more in-your-face type films then you're unlikely to like this flick. But stick with it and you'll enjoy.
So who is Abigail then? Why, the fifteen-year-old daughter of one of Beverly's guests who is having her first party and boy is Beverly going to enjoy stirring things up.
Watch out for an unexpected and dramatic ending.
Light Ale Tone?.......1999-11-24
I can't recommend this movie enough. It is so so so funny. Please watch it and I'm telling you Now! , you will become Beverly and start asking people if they want cheesy pineapples. A gem! Ok? That's it. Lovely
