A last attempt to squeeze some laughs out of the team of Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, Another You mostly conjures up pleasant memories of Silver Streak and Stir Crazy. Pryor plays a con man forced to tend a pathological liar (Wilder), who's immediately mistaken as a missing millionaire--a mistake that could pay off big. The storyline actually holds promise as a classic screwball comedy outline, but the movie doesn't build any snap or crackle, and promising set-ups dribble away. Even the once-electric chemistry between the stars has faded. Wilder displays that eerie sadness and stillness he brings to his comedic roles, but here he looks stranded. Pryor's ferocious talent is muted and his onscreen energy is turned down low; his reliance on easy profanity feels a little desperate. This was his final starring role before illness took him out of movies. --Robert Horton

2 out of 5 stars Another You - The end of something great.......2007-05-18

I'm a huge fan of Gene Wilder's films especially when he pairs up with Richard Pryor. As mentioned earlier, "Silver Streak" "Stir Crazy" are top gold for the duo. "See No Evil, Hear No Evil", personally was also funny...it's from the late 80's--the magic is already diminishing. Nevertheless, still enjoyable. I love it even though it got panned by critics and reviewers here on Amazon. I saw that this movie, "Another You" also got sad reviews across the board...but figured "hey, if I liked "see no evil, hear no evil.." this might be good also.

It wasn't. Trust me...I had a VERY open mind about this movie. I was desperately SEARCHING for places to laugh...and unfortunately couldn't find any. Let me clarify...there are many things that one COULD laugh at...but they didn't make me laugh. I'm 22 and I suppose the comedy is dated or preferred for an older group (??) but some of the bits just don't work anymore. Someone here reviewed that the yodeling scene in the movie was funny...I didn't laugh. In fact, i was shocked it went as long as it did. The part where Richard Pryor fakes playing the saxophone? A tired and old routine. A bit like that isn't new...it's old. Pryor tries to fake his way through a sax solo and fails. That SHOULD be funny right? The are many avenues and opportunities for gags in this movie...but their efforts are mediocre--at best.

I couldn't wait for the movie to end. The acting was so fluffy and over the top that, THAT might be the only thing you can laugh at! The plot is bareable but we're not watching a Wilder/Pryor movie for a plot! Pyror's swearing is the only consistent comedic input he has in the movie which gets a giggle--not laughs.

Sadly, Pryor's medical condition escalates and is visible in the movie. Facial reactions are not present much, and his overall frame is stiffening. One would simply guess that it's old age but it distracts you when you're watching the movie.

The movie gets a very generous D as a grade. People who would enjoy this would probably be people who watched it in theatres in 1991 and(for whatever reason) enjoyed watching it again today. For ones who have never seen it and are younger...doubt you'll enjoy or compare it to the other Pryor/Wilder gems.

5 out of 5 stars a Richard Prior movie I hadn't seen.......2007-05-14

A different kind of a story, very interesting, holds your interest, surprises, laughs, and a unique view of life.

1 out of 5 stars Another You, Another Poor B-Grade Acted Comedy.......2007-01-10

I was hoping this film would be really funny like "Hear No Evil, See No Evil". Boy was i wrong. When i first knew Gene Wilder's Character was from a mental home, i said to myself, "I have a feeling i will not like this movie at all, i think it's gonna be a very weird movie to watch". Boy was i right. The yodeling scene drove me absolutely bonkers watching it, i was comtemplating turning it off, never to watch it again. When i watched the therapy session play near the start of the film, (When Richard Pryor came to meet George for the first time.) i really wanted to turn it off. The acting in that scene made me think how bad and WEIRD the acting is. The therapist in that scene should be commited too, he looked like he should be a patient himself. This film should be scrapped and made all over again. Sadly, The great funny man Richard Pryor, is no longer with us to create a remake.

5 out of 5 stars Funny movie of 1991........2006-05-30

I have heard of the movie "Another You" and I'm looking forward to see it!Rated R for language.

5 out of 5 stars A funny film!.......2004-10-14

This film was the most recent for both its stars Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. They did three other films together,1976's SILVER STREAK with Jill Clayburgh,1980's STIR CRAZY and 1989's SEE NO EVIL HEAR NO EVIL. In this film Pryor is a conman who befriends Wilder. Wilder's character does a great deal of lying(he plays a dual role). Great support from Stephen Lang and Mercedes Ruehl. Ruehl is Elaine, the wife of Wilder's character. Memorable scenes include Wilder's character being scared by Frankenstein in a haunted mansion, also faking a corpse at a funeral(he thanks those who attended). Vanessa Williams is Gloria, who Pryor's character takes romantic interest in. In the final scene,Pryor,Wilder,Ruehl and Williams are on vacation in Hawaii. Pryor and Wilder have a picture taken with them both holding a sign that reads "Partners Forever". Great film!

Great film!

We convinced Randal Brown to share these skills. It took Randall years to win the confidence of the men who finally revealed these brutal Indian Fighting arts to him. So, why is he sharing it with you? Simple. These skills are quickly becoming so secret they're about to disappear. Just like so many American Indian languages have vanished, never to be spoken again. Randall agonized over this decision for a long, long time. He's not doing this for any other reason than to make sure these amazing skills are not lost to history. How brutal are they? Well let's just say that Randall is a 12th deg. black belt and grandmaster. He is 4th degree black belt in Yondan, an expert at Sambo combat, and an authorized instructor in six other martial arts. So he's no fluke. But he insists that this "Plains Indian" form of fighting is the most lethal, brutal, and viciously effective thing you'll EVER run across. What's so special about these skills? Well, for starters... You will learn to snap an attacker's neck with three different (and very easy) moves. (It's even worse for him if he has snuck up on you.) You will learn the most devastating punch ever thrown by a man against another man a move that can stop a heart, yet will not hurt your hand. (And requires no strength.) You will learn how to quickly "break down" an attacker twice your size and weight turning him into a pile of bleeding beef at your feet in a matter of seconds. You will learn how to escape from having your hands tied reverse a knife-to-your-throat situation (very nasty and bloody) how to flip monster-sized attackers as easily as tossing a box of cereal across the room (breaking his back, and pulverizing his guts in the process) and a dozen more easy moves that will shock and incapacitate ANY sized attacker. And... you will learn astonishing "instant take out" moves you have NEVER SEEN BEFORE. Not anywhere. Not by anyone.

    Product Description

SYNOPSIS: In their second feature with director Richard Lester, who oversaw the massive hit A Hard Day's Night, the Beatles again aim for a mix of goofy comedy and sterling pop music. There is slightly more of a plot this time, though it is a patently ridiculous one: a sacred ruby ring comes into Ringo's possession, attracting the unwelcome attention of an exotic religious cult and forcing the boys to go on the run. This chase narrative is thankfully never taken too seriously, serving mainly as an excuse for colorful excursions to international locations from Europe to the Bahamas. The musical numbers include such classic tunes as "Ticket to Ride," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," and, of course, "Help!". DVD SPECIAL FEATURES: Theatrical Trailer / Synopsis / Beatles Profiles. COMPLETE SONG LIST: Help! / You're Gonna Lose That Girl / You've Got to Hide Your Love Away / Ticket to Ride / I Need You / The Night Before / Another Girl.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Really nice quality.......2007-06-18

Overall I was very happy with this DVD mastering. I saw absolutely no evidence that this was copied from VHS so forget the comments to that effect from one reviewer. As others have noted, the audio is excellent - clear, crisp mono, as God (and George Martin) intended. If you want the best quality mono version of the soundtrack songs, just dub the musical numbers from this disc to CD! Visual quality is very good although I would like to have seen the original widescreen ratio letterboxed. Colors are sharp and bright and short of a total remastering this as good as we're likely to get. My fear would be that the next "official" Apple reissue would substitute the stereo mixes from the LP, which would destroy the audio integrity, so get this while you can!

5 out of 5 stars Great Trade Up From the Old Version..........2007-06-17

I've had "Help" on DVD for 17 years now; this version is a great upgrade! Subtitles, great sound (I have Bose 901Vs, no surround). The sound is great. Help is described by some as "best watched fast forwarded to the song scenes". Admittedly, it's a great bunch of "pre-MTV videos"! I'm a "John" fan, and he sings the first four of seven songs.

"Help" is first , great classic Beatles performance, in their last? B&W scene.

Next is "Your Going To Lose That Girl"- a fantastic "recording session" scene, great closeups of faces and guitars, nice filmography for 1965. It's worth a watch for the last line; the record producer asks "Boys, are you buzzing?" John says, "No, I'll take the car"! The Beatles were, as John stated, "smoking marijuana for breakfast" during the filming. George said they busted out laughing constantly, ruining several takes..

John plays a 12 string Hootenany in the next scene, "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away". John always hated miming songs, he deliberately made faces, scratched himself, anything for a laugh. Watch for him screwing up the scene twice. Supposedly written for Brian Epstein's life of living gay in the closet.

"Ticket To Ride", my favorite scene, is next. This video ruled MTV for some time in the mid-80s. Innovative photograhy, "Marx Brothers-like" antics and hilarious wipeouts as the Beatles attempt to ski in the Austrian Alps. It's also THE greatest song by the Beatles, in my opinion...classic drumming, guitars, vocals, harmonies, bass, lyrics.

"I Need You", George's "song" for the movie, is filmed on the Salisbury Plain with the Royal Army's Tank Corps, in sight of Stonhenge, I think. They're freezing cold-watch Ringo shiver, just like the Apple rooftop in Let It Be!

"The Night Before" finixshes the scene from above. Funny, it's Paul's first lead vocal in the film. Great bass playing and fisheye lens guitar shots! John almost gets run over by a tank. It's sad, these scenes (like he and George being "old" in the airport scene) are so different since he's dead. Rot in hell, Mark David Chapman!

"Another Girl" is next and pure Beatles fun, as they swap instruments on the Bahaman beach. John is a natural comedian, as usual. Ringo "plays" guitar too. The best part are the girls in those 1965 bikinis! They's cut "James Bond-like", since the movie's a parody of Bond films. They're still hot after all these years!

"Help" is reprised for the final scene which wraps up the silly plot. Think of the targeted age group that saw this in the theatre in '65...

The ending credits are a blast! "The Barber Of Seville" plays with the Beatles screwing around,as usual, laughing, singing, and George plugging his song! Listen to them laugh so hard they end with a collapsing gasp! The filmography, again, just during the credits, is fascinating for "it's day and age" - 42 years now.

This is one of those RARE films, it's a family film, if needed. Yeah, is's not as good as A Hard Day's Night, but it's GOOD+...and the songs are fantastic.

This turned out longer than I expected....

Chances are very good that this will NOT be compatible with your DVD player. I tried it in two machines with no success. Buyer beware!

4 out of 5 stars HELP! the other version.......2007-04-13

I purchased this in hopes of having a dvd of the movie HELP! by The Beatles. At first, when i recieved the package I almost freaked out, soince it had Korean written on the back and the cover didn't have HELP! on it. But after I popped it into my dvd player it gave me what I wanted. Th epicture quality seem spretty clean and the sounds seems fine. Of course it's not from Apple but it is a pretty damn good substitue.

5 out of 5 stars "Help!" Yourself to Some 1965 Beatles!.......2007-04-06

The Beatles' second full length movie was a silly spoof of the James Bond genre. Ringo receives a ring as a gift from a fan. As soon as he puts it on, an Eastern cult follows the Beatles from England to the Austrian Alps to the Bahamas trying to get that darn ring. Naturally our boys win - they have some cute lines, sing some excellent songs and dodge those cultists like you wouldn't believe.

Still, it's all in good fun. It's in color; it features the Beatles and the music is ideal. Fans will love George's brilliant deadpan delivery of "I didn't encourage that wink, y'know;" "doesn't sound a BIT like Cagney!"; "don't encourage him. You've already got the part, Paul;" "thanks for the lift, Sailor!" George remained so cool and in control and seemingly above it all in that move. He delights audiences with his piece, "I Need You." George also finds a place in the hearts of viewers when he makes eyes at the Priestess Ahme when the Beatles are playing the beautiful 1965 classic, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away."

Yeah, this is a fun movie and Beatle fans are the best audience/viewers of this treat. This is truly a Beatle classic and one that fans will continue to enjoy.
