Perhaps one of the greatest lights ever to shine on late-night television, Eddie Murphy has gone on to well-deserved international superstardom. Check out his earliest television work on Saturday Night Live: The Best of Eddie Murphy, a collection of his greatest roles, from Gumby to Stevie Wonder to Buckwheat. Of course, some would argue that his best role was as himself, and there is plenty of evidence for that--many of the skits feature Murphy au naturel and the opening sequence is taken from his monologue when he returned to the show triumphantly after leaving for Hollywood. Exploring the world around him and finding laughs everywhere, Murphy can take a simple idea (such as the "James Brown Hot Tub Party") and run wild with it, leaving the audience hysterically begging for more. You don't have to be a fan to enjoy this collection, but odds are you'll be one by the time you're finished. --Rob Lightner
Customer Reviews:
How About A 'Best Of' SNL By Year?.......2007-06-23
How about making 'Best Of' Saturday Night Live by year? Not by host, not something with interviews and commentary, just best skits only and by year. Best of 1978, Best Of 1986, Best Of 1994, etc...
Not what I expected........2007-06-08
The DVD blacked out and some of the scenes I rememberd from watching it previously were deleted.
Yes, they messed-- but they did add---.......2007-03-01
I too was surprised that the new, improved DVD version of The Best of Eddie Murphy was not the same as my old VHS version. Sure, James Brown doing Hot Tub and Bu'wheat and Velvet Jones were there; but there was only 1 Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood instead of 2, and it was missing a few gems like the discussion of the Emancipation Proclamation and a sketch with Stevie Wonder. But where the DVD redeemed itself was on the inclusion of a Gumby skit (I didn't care which one, I couldn't believe they didn't include one on the VHS and I wanted Gumby, dammit!), the prison film in which the poet recites the ever-popular and billiant poem, "Kill My Landlord" (C-I-L-L my landlord), and Stevie Wonder playing a nerd trying to do a Stevie Wonder impersonation, only to be taught by Eddie how to do Stevie. So they taketh away with one hand, and giveth with the other. Could they have included ALL of them, and then some, on a new DVD? OF COURSE THEY COULD! And why didn't they? Good question. But to be fair to the DVD, I welcomed the new inclusions. Just don't get rid of your old VHS. If it was ALL in one, it would be 5 stars. But just having Gumby ordering a Morey Amsterdam sandwich again made me feel good all over (dammit). Not perfect, but I'll give it better than a C (a bouncy C).
messed with the original VHS release, made it worse.......2007-02-07
Loren Michels ruins most things he touches. they left out the "Hot Tub" sketch, where eddie play's as the late, great James Brown. it may be one of THE most funny sketches in the history of television!!!! I could see that thing 100 times and i would still laugh as hard as the first time seeing it! i stand buy the greatness of that sketch, SNL was riding the Eddie Murphy thing all the way to the bank ( the show would most likley been canceled, in my opinion, the show was unwatchable without him an piscapo teamed up).
then to make this thing worse is that the VHS version had zero Gumby sketches in it ( still great without it thought). i see they have a Gumby sketch in the dvd version, i think "oh, cool, a Gumby dammit segment", but it ends up being one of the lamest one's around. what, they didn't want to pay piscapo the royalties for showing the one where Gumby goes on Letterman (Piscapo as letterman)?
do everyone a favor and don't purchase this watered down version....Delirious just came out. get that instead. that is GARUNTEED to make u laugh! this dvd....meeeeh!
Falls Short!.......2006-08-21
This DVD fell short of the quality of the original VHS version. There were so many great clips left out. I can sum it up in one sentence: More Eddie, less Buckwheat.

Billy Crystal co-wrote, directed, and starred in this ambitious 1992 comedy-drama about an aged comedian named Buddy Young Jr., whose foul attitude and poor judgment have a strongly negative effect on his career and the people who care for him most. A survivor of the Borscht Belt tradition of stand-up comedians, Buddy's quick with a one-liner but clueless about how to treat people--he's like a cross between George Burns, Milton Berle, and a rabid pit bull. Helen Hunt plays Buddy's tolerant new agent who's been hired to revive his lagging career, but the movie's saving grace is David Paymer's Oscar-nominated performance as Buddy's much-maligned brother, who's helpless to stop Buddy's downward spiral. Having invented the Buddy Young character for his own comedy routines, Crystal knows this comic curmudgeon inside and out, and his show-biz savvy adds much-needed authenticity under layers of phony-looking old-age makeup. The movie works best when it's offering insight into Buddy's lifetime of disappointment, and some of the dialogue is memorably sharp. Crystal can't resist a seemingly forced happy ending, however, and the closing scenes resort to sentimentality that clashes with the rest of the movie. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Billy Crystal stars and makes his directorial debut in this nostalgic, poignant comedy about a comedian who realizes that life is passing him by...and he may have missed the punchline. Co-starring David Paymer in an Oscar®-nominated* role and featuring stand-out performances by Julie Warner, Helen Hunt and Ron Silver, and many moments of truth and insight (Leonard Maltin), Mr. Saturday Night makes you laugh as it touches you with its heart of comic gold. After forty years of struggling to reach the top, funny man Buddy Young, Jr. (Crystal) is still fighting his way to themiddle. Buddy sharpens his act by delivering hilariously cutting insults to his audience...not to mention his family and friends. But when he goes too far and his brother/manager (Paymer) has had enough, Buddy faces the ultimate: To press on with his dying career or finally put the spotlight on theones he loves? *1992: Supporting Actor

Billy at his best.......2007-03-15
This movie was a revelation, I have always liked his acting but this is the best of his movies that I have seen.
About a funny guy who is also pretty nasty.......2006-05-04
Billy Crystal stars as an aging stand-up comic (Buddy Young, Jr.) with a mean streak in him. The movie starts off slowly and seemingly predictably, with Crystal and his brother (played by David Paymer) doing comedy together in their Jewish living room to all the relatives, getting some early breaks, and heading up the showbiz ladder. But Paymer opts out of the routine and becomes Cyrstal's manager. After many years and now on the decline, they have a falling out, but reconcile at the end. Comedians have enormous egos, and Crystal as Buddy wouldn't think twice about putting someone down for a laugh. (I've heard the same thing said about the real life Groucho Marx, whose insults directed as his family were funny to everyone except his family. But he didn't care as long as he got a laugh.) He's a funny guy, Buddy is, but not a nice one. The second half of the movie is much better than the first. Humor is in the mind of the beholder (sort of like beauty), and I thought the jokes were mildly funny. It certainly is not the worst movie ever made as some reviewers here seem to think.
It deserved zero stars, actually. Terrible........2006-01-20
Read the negative Amazon comments - they are right. Terrible in all respects. If you like this film, you probably will find the telephone book extremely entertaining.
A Truly Horrid Movie.......2006-01-17
I'm not normally one to complain about movies but thought I'd go out of my way to warn people of this terrible, terrible movie.
It dragged on for (what seemed to be) forever, was not funny and was lacking any sort of direction.
I'm normally a fan of Billy Crystal and usually find him funny and quite entertaining. In this movie however he was nothing short of irritating. Talk about a career killer.
Seriously folks, save your money for something decent.

One of the major breakout stars to come out of the first years of Saturday Night Live was not one of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players, but was instead born from a bit of clay and the creative mind of Walter Williams.
The 18 shorts that comprise The Best of Saturday Night Live: The Mr. Bill Collection exemplify the humor and outrageousness that we have come to expect from Mr. Bill, Spot, Mr. Hands, and of course, Sluggo. The plots, and budget, may have been simple and at some times poorly executed, but they remain a catalyst of laughter and bring back memories of staying up late just to see what troubles would cause Bill to utter his famous phrase: "Ohh, nooo!!!" We are treated to classic Mr. Bill exploits, such as "Mr. Bill's Christmas Special," "Mr. Bill Goes to New York," and the inappropriately named "Mr. Bill Strikes Back," as well as a bonus "Public Service Announcement" relating to highway education.
Although the quality of the film is not always the best, the humor remains intact. In 50 minutes, The Best of Saturday Night Live: The Mr. Bill Collection illustrates how he was one of the show's brightest stars, all the while keeping his unkempt, independent charm. --Zachary Lively
Customer Reviews:
"Definitive Collection" Is a MUCH Better Value.......2006-07-13
All the material on this disk plus more is contained in the three-disk Definitive Collection which is in print, available on Amazon, and very inexpensive (especially through 3rd-party sellers). What the D.C. lacks is any printed material that might be included with this Anchor Bay release.
Mr. Bill, BTW, seemed a lot funnier to me during his SNL run (this seems to be the general consensus), but even with hindsight, I'd probably still purchase the D.C., if only for an inexpensive trip down Memory Lane. Rating reflects the material, which I have seen, and not this particular release, which I haven't.
Put This on My Guilty Pleasure List.......2003-02-06
When they started out, the Mr. Bill shorts were a clever satire of bad childrens animation (that is, until they started taking themselves too seriously and became bad animation. See: "Mr. Bill Does Vegas.") More to the point, those two minute segments of poor, play-dough Mr. Bill getting slaughtered by Mr. Hands and Sluggo were pretty dang funny.
The DVD image is fairly grainy and at some points can be quite poor. However, they still looks substantially better than the early TV broadcasts, and much better than the previous "Best of SNL: Mr. Bill" video. Among the numerous extras (games, Mr. Bill intro, Storyboards, Booklet, New Shorts, G-Rated Versions) the best is the commentary by Mr. Bill and Mr. Hands. As in the commentary on the "This is Spinal Tap" disc, it's a funny satire of the normal, boring commentary track.
so what.......2002-04-20
can't rewind a one minute film? Who cares? You DVD nerds are the worst.
The menu is cute.
Classic hilarity, abominable DVD.......2001-07-20
The "Mr. Bill" short films are as bizarrely endearing as ever, but the DVD is a disaster. (Note that all the earlier reviews are for the VHS tape.)
Here's the rub: ***ALL*** scanning and skipping functions are disabled throughout the entire disc! Want to go to the next film? Don't press the skip button; it won't work. You have to go back to the tedious menu and arrow your way slowly to the episode you want. Want to back up or fast forward a little in the film you're watching? Sorry, but there's no way AT ALL to do that.
This disc is a cruel joke and should be withdrawn. It cannot be recommended at all as issued, though I found it impossible to give poor Mr. Bill only one star....
Classic and hilarious.......2000-02-16
You may feel bad laughing at the sufferings of the benevolent, upbeat Mr. Bill, but you can't help it. This is as funny as anything ever seen on SNL. Although the video is less than an hour long, it packs more laughs than some of the best comedy movies. I highly, highly recommend this.

An Oscar worthy performance by Billy Crystal in his best work since Soap.
