I could just become a Tara Reid fan.......2007-06-12
You know there is a lot written about what a terrible actress Tara Reid is but actually given the right script and a role where she is not required to carry the whole film, she can do a decent job. Unfortunately, this is not the right script and she is required to carry the whole film. A few minutes into this one, I was asking myself: "What was she thinking?" Did she talk to this guy once or twice before she married him? What did she see in him? Kip Pardue should have just worn a sign on his forehead: NUTCASE, KEEP AWAY. Anyway, I watched the whole film and it was kind of entertaining, though pretty slow and very hard to believe. Also the two leads were not up to the task. I could see where this film might be an okay way to spend a slow night if you're in the right mood, so I give it 3 stars and say watch it if you're running low on selections at the video store. Don't buy it though. You can do better things with your money, like if you really like Tara Reid, watch INCUBUS.
So boring..........2007-03-07
A Region-4 DVD produced under a title "Heaven's Pond" makes a related info of harder to locate in Amazon.com.
However, one could conclude psychopathic nature of characters is based on a sort of ill imagination demonstrated by creators of this work rather than on any realistically possible patterns.
As understood, a young husband is a person assuming someone's identity which presses him to survive on an island in the middle of the river, which is practically impossible, no food and elementary gains civilization presents. In this case, his marriage, no documents, is a mystery either.
While wasting time on watching, I felt this work very similar to a famous French movie "Criminal Lovers", a real gem of a modern cinematography.
Very Entertaining.......2006-11-29
I was never a fan of Reid until I saw her in Van Wilder, and I thought she was adorable in that film. She does a complete turn in this film which has a dark edge to it, and it is quite believable. The photography is amazing as it adds to the chilling atmosphere. Kip Pardue and Tara Reid have some chemistry, and while neither of these actors are going to set the world on fire with rave reviews, they each fit these roles nicely. Its a little predictable, but the eerie still shots and Pardue's relentless attempts to supress Reid keep you glued to your seat. It helps that Reid looks the part in this film and delivers the most convincing performance of her up-and-down career.
Did i married Grizzle Adams or what?!?.......2005-10-13
Newlyweds go on honeymoon to secluded patch of land in the middle of a pond where the husband turns Grizzle Adams on her, where her life will never be the same again. What a plot...like what gives here. We have this guy who does the lovey dovey sweet charm moves on hot American Pie gal Tara Reid to get her to marry him. Then while on their geteway trip to romance, he decides its time to live like Amish people by learning to live a life like Mary in 'Little House on the Prairie' because according to him, true love cannot be obtain living a pampered princess life style in modern civilization. According to Mr. Adams here, true love is to be his obedient while he does the manly things like hunting for food in the great outdoors then coming home where his wife should be ready and willing for passionate love. She doesn't like this crap from the very start so you probably know whats going to happen next. You know, for someone who chatised modern inventions and its usage, why does he carry a box of matches, flashlight, and other goodies.....talk about being a hypocrit.
For parents who dislike their daughtars romantic relationship with their bf's and want to warned them what possible marriage could led to, then by all means....have them WATCH this movie. Impressionable girls would believe into thinking that every sweet talking hot stud has an evil agenda once the knot is tied LOL.
Now if your wondering if i enjoyed this movie or not, well let me tell you....i hate it to pieces. So much so that i ended up flinging the DVD across the room in disgust after seeing it. Little entertainment value where the only setting is on that little dingy island in the middle of a pond? Oh yeah, it's a Devil's pond man...duh! I feel bad seeing Tara being helpless like that but she will get her revenge...very predicable in fact cause the viewing audience would not want this maniac to win. Wow i didn't know that!
If you enjoy this movie alot and wants to watch it over and over again, then you got problems and need to seek help.
pretty good.......2005-07-23
this movie is about an upper middle class girl and her newlywed husband. they leave on the second day of there marraige for a secluded island that no one rlly knows about.
but after awhile things change. her husband becomes very controlive and possesive of her and bc she cant swim he even chains her up! he tampers with the car so it wont start because he is trying to keep her there on the island. we find out that he killed his father in a hunting accident. she must fight her way out and make her escape. there are so many simple and obvious things that she could have done to escape tho. why not just take a weapon and walk back to town in the night!? or wen she had to fight him she could have kicked him below the belt. there were so many things around her like rocks that she could have used and she should have taken that knife and stabbed him in the back of the knee to immobilize him. and if u stab someone right below there triceps it will paralyze there entire arm!(true fact.) and wen she had that cigarette she could have stuck it in his eye instead of his hands. anyway she ends up blowing his hand off with a rifle and escaping the island. in the end he gets the gun and we are left to believe that he killed himself. its not the best movie in the world but its something to watch at night wen ur rlly bored lol. (PS, Tara Reid looked great in those white shorts!)

Customer Reviews:
A Depressing Film Well Acted and Directed.......2005-12-04
This is a depressing, largely nonjudgmental film about a family which probably would be called trailer trash if they lived in America instead of Iceland. It's the Fifties, and Devil's Island is the name of a former U. S. military base near Reykjavik the Americans have abandoned. It has become the home of hundreds of poor Icelanders as families have moved into the decaying quonset huts. Cast-off lumber, sheets of tin, rocks and trash litter the place. It's too cold for mud, but pools of icy water collect along the dirt streets. There's not a speck of green anywhere.
Among the families is a grim, elderly, harsh grandmother who believes she can predict the future, her unhappy, unshaven husband, their loose-living daughter with two sons and a daughter of her own. In time the grandparents see their daughter marry an American serviceman and move to Kansas City. They continue to live in the squalor of Devil's Island with their grandchildren. Time passes. Then one of the sons, Baddi (Baltasar Kormakus), a selfish grown delinquent with lots of attitude, flies off to visit his mother and her now well-off husband. He returns with a used red Cadillac with fins, a leather jacket, a greasy pompadour, dark glasses and with no respect for anyone except Elvis Presley. His brother, Dani (Sveian Geirsson), however, is shy, quiet and stays close to home. Baddi drinks, carouses and makes life hell for everyone. He usually brings his drunken buddies and their girls back home to continue to party. Dani eventually breaks away, learns to fly and begins to assert himself. By the end of the movie one major character is dead and not much about the family, the quality of their life or the trouble and unpleasantness that Baddi brings with him in everything he does has changed. Baddi doesn't appear to have learned anything except self-pity, and is probably going to slip even further into alcholism-fueled depression. The quonset huts now are being torn down and the families of Devil's Island are being moved into multi-floor concrete apartment boxes which look even more character-destroying than what they are replacing.
This is a movie that is part black-comedy, but there's not much to smile at. Devil's Island is more often harsh than gentle, more often ironic than humorous. The look of the film is outstanding, but it places you in a physical environment you wouldn't want to visit much less live in. The redeeming qualities center around Dani, who manages to find a life after being overshadowed for years by his brother's braggadocio, and by the grandfather, Tomi, played by Gisli Halldorsson. The last shot of the movie is of Tomi walking away toward a job, whistling. There may not be much to whistle about in his life, but he finds something. I'm glad I watched the movie and I don't regret buying it, but I'm not sure how many times I'll return to it. The DVD transfer is very good.
excess.......2005-03-23
Ultimately this is a kind of cautionary tale about embracing excesses to the point of self-destruction and also seeing the true goodness in people. As Americans begin leaving some WWII era barracks empty in post-war Iceland, Icelanders begin occupying them. Coming to terms with their new-found independence, Iceland looks to move forward... Some Icelanders embrace American ways and indeed Americans, even marrying them and moving to the US. In the story, two young men, Baddi and Danni are reared by their grandparents as their mother marries an American and moves to the States. The well-known Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur plays Baddi, the more gregarious of the two brothers. Danni, played by Sveinn Geirsson, is more reserved but more sensitive. Baddi eventually leaves to go to America, and when he returns with his "cool American clothes and car" he brings with him a certain appeal, otherness, likeability. He becomes instantly popular and the object of worship for the not so well off population of the barracks. A certain status is conferred upon him because he has attained a kind of worldliness the others can only dream about. Danni lives in Baddi's shadow, and for all of Baddi's endless talk of moving to America and achieving all these high falutin' dreams, Danni's quiet sensitivity and intensity pay off. Overlooked he might be, but he does achieve his dreams, while Baddi lets the excess he lives in go to his head, and he wastes his life becoming a lazy, violent, intimidating drunk. He also becomes rather jealous of Danni's success, but would never put in the hard work and perseverance Danni invested to make his dreams come true. The story does not have the happiest of endings, but it is nevertheless an interesting period piece with a kind of "lesson" and an excellent introduction/overview of Iceland during the inception of its independence.
Escaping Icelandic Poverty..........2004-04-23
In the years after World War II the American military forces keep a base on an Icelandic island, however, they move it away from Reykjavik. The abandoned barracks are offered to the homeless of Iceland as they can seek shelter from the biting winters. The Devil's Island depicts the poor people in this area, where they live, and how they deal with daily struggles where hope of leaving seems like a wishful dream. Nonetheless, there are always ways of escaping the nagging pain of poverty, and those who escape the social environment are either hated or adored. Devil's Island is an interesting film about a situation that many never would have known of unless Fridrikkson directed this film, which offers a good cinematic experience.
Rock 'n Roll comes to Iceland.......2004-02-25
I saw this movie ca. 1995 in Oslo with Norwegian subtitles, the only Icelandic movie I know and a shame I haven't had the chance to see others. The movie depicts the relative wealth and attractiveness of American servicemen from Keflavik in the context of the extreme poverty of Icelanders living in an old quanset hut. The Icelanders can, of course, speak some English and the Americans can, also realistically, speak no Icelandic. Big, loud old American cars, rock and roll, and the desire to escape the crushing poverty. The film is memorable, and for another Icelandic viewpoint on the early drive toward globalization, read "The Atom Station" by Haldor Laxness.
Icelandic is a beautiful language, essentially the Norwegian of a thousand years ago, the Viking era. I don't understand it but wish I did!

Battle Royale lite........2007-05-12
Kill Devil (Yuichi Onuma, 2006)
How impressive is it to have seen a movie that's not even listed on IMDB? The funny thing is, it's not all that hard to come across; Urban Vision Entertainment has done a pretty fine job with the U. S. DVD release. Unfortunately, that's the only good thing I'm going to say about this flick.
Tell me if this sounds familiar, Japanese horror fans: Shougo (Masked Raider Phi's Yoshika Kato) wakes up with no memory on a secluded island, where scientists track his movements as he forms alliances with a number of other kids who have lost their memories-- all of whom have to defend themselves against various other kids on the island, whose entire purpose for living is to kill them. (That's not an exaggeration; Onuma hauls out the good old XYY hypothesis and dresses it up in scientific-sounding language in interminable cutscenes that worked far better in Stacy: Attack of the Schoolgirl Zombies.) Yep, you've seen this one before. And in all honesty, it wasn't all that great the first time around, when it was called Battle Royale. The difference is that BR had a few characters you could identify with; the characters here exist for the sole purpose of advancing the plot or playing into Onuma's ludicrous "as you know, bob" scenes with the scientists.
Okay, I'll say one other good thing about this movie. If you actually sat through the whole thing, you have to watch the alternate ending. I can't seriously believe that anyone really ever thought "hey, let's end this movie with a dance routine," so I assume it was filmed later specifically as a DVD extra. I could, however, be wrong in this, as the credits go to great lengths to inform us that a number of the minor characters in this movie are members of the boy band Diamond Dogs, so who knows? And while the alternate ending will have you wondering what your perverted neighbor mixed into that bowl of chili you ate earlier in the evening, it's not worth sitting through ninety minutes of derivative schlock. *
Kill Devil Review.......2006-10-01
Ugh! That pretty much sums it up. With no story and no gore this movie has very little going for it. I picked it up because of a review I saw mentioning that the movie was inspired by Battle Royale. So, I decided to give it a try.
The only thing that made this movie bearable was the constant heckling my friends and I gave the movie as we watched it. I don't know what I would have done if I was by myself. Oh Wait! I know, I would have turned it off.
So in the end 1 star for being a movie and a second star for the dialog track that we supplied for the movie.
Oh, and one more thing if you do decide to get it and manage to get through the movie without shutting it off check out the alternate ending. None of us saw that coming and it had us rolling on the ground for an hour laughing.
It's no "Battle Royale".......2006-03-02
In spite of the praise showered on this film by the reviewer above (who has two reviews posted on Amazon, both for Urban Vision products), this film is not at all the "non-stop blood bath" it purports to be. Kill Devil takes a premise designed for a pure B-movie exploitation flick, and attempts to turn it into a contemplative art movie. The result is a slow-moving disaster and a bore. One star for being a movie. A second star for mild humor value as children die without pain or terror, but long, sad looks of existential angst.
Non-Stop, Who isn't the Killer!.......2005-12-23
This film is the epitome of today's standard in Japanese horror, featuring a non-stop bloodbath set in the future filled with surprises around every corner. Stranded on an island a group of teenagers are confused as to why they have sent there and are unable to distinguish between friends and foes as everyone in the group is a potential killer. In this story you must kill to stay alive. The film is very comparable to Battle Royale in theme, however it stands on it's own as a sleek and heart pounding thriller. This film will develop a cult following once it catches on. I definitely recommend this film to any horror or Asian film lover. Urban Vision, once known for anime, is definitely on track to establish themselves as a leader in live-action Asian cinema with films like Kill Devil from there new sub-label AsiaVision. Those contacts overseas are definitely paying off for this independent label that continues to distinguish itself as the "David" among the "Goliaths". I hear that they plan to release the Japanese blockbuster "Azumi" this spring, I can't wait to see that one. I am definitely a fan of this new label, AsiaVision, great idea Urban Vision.

Where did the 17 minutes go??.......2006-10-04
This DVD release purports to run 97 minutes - which is consistent with the IMDb information. However, it actually runs just 80 minutes, with all nudity edited out of the film. Consequently, the underlying story of innocent youth betrayed by jealousy is but a weak footnote to some rather bland and uncompelling scenes of "prison depravity".
A waste of time and money ... even for the obsessive Francophile ...

Product Description
Surviving the mutiny on board his ship, Captain Morgan and his ship's hand Bob find they have jumped out of the kettle only to have landed in the fire. Thier rescuer, Murphy's long-time arch nemesis, Kraffa the Pirate, holds them captive aboard his vessel, and as they approach Devil's Island, the superstitious lore surrounding the dark island paints the atmosphere with dread and apprehension. Throw into the mix a cache of treasure on the island somewhere along with Captain Morgan's blind rage and determination to punish the mutineers from his ship, and you have a tale brimming over with action, adventure, and excitement!
