Welcome to Mooseport is such a blandly likable comedy that your grandmother could watch it and wish for a little sex and violence to keep her awake. Perhaps the phenomenal popularity of TV's Everybody Loves Raymond made Ray Romano proceed too cautiously in selecting this small-town comedy as his film debut; without a live audience and an endless supply of punchy one-liners at his disposal, his domestic everyman persona seems a bit lost, ill-defined and uncertain how to respond when a former U.S. President (Gene Hackman) (1) moves to the quiet, jovial Maine burg of Mooseport, where Romano's the beloved plumber and hardware store proprietor; (2) proceeds to make moves on Ray's long-time girlfriend (Maura Tierney, from ER); and (3) runs against our ol' pal Ray in Mooseport's homespun mayoral election. Hackman's got some stellar support from Marcia Gay Harden and Rip Torn (and, to a lesser degree, Fred Savage), and Tierney's a pleasure as always, but director Donald Petrie (Miss Congeniality) can't spin gold from straw; Tom Schulman's screenplay aims to please everyone, draining the energy from what might, in other hands, have been a deliciously devious premise. There's such a thing as being "niced" to death, and Welcome to Mooseport is proof. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Cast your ballot for big laughs when Gene Hackman and Ray Romano find themselves in a hilariously heated race for mayor of Mooseport, Maine. A local plumber (Romano) is plunged into the national spotlight when he takes on the former President of the United States (Hackman), who can't believe he's running against the man installing his toilets! To make matters worse, the ex-prez is trying to steal the election -- and the affection of the handyman's girlfriend (Maura Tierney). Whoever wins, one thing's for sure: this town isn't small enough for the both of them!

Welcome To Mooseport (Full Screen Edition).......2007-03-21
What a funny movie!! Ray Ramano and Gene Hackman are the perfect adversaries. A must see!!
Bad, really really bad..........2006-12-01
You probably would think that based off the success of `Everybody Love's Raymond', `Welcome to Mooseport' would be, of I don't know, funny. Well, think again because other than the ever delightful Marcia Gay Harden `Welcome to Mooseport' is as dull and boring as those family reunions your mother would drag you to every year. With absolutely no chemistry and almost nothing humorous to say and or do, stars Ray Romano and Gene Hackman sleepwalk through almost two hours (how they dragged this trash out that long is beyond me) of the viewers time, at the viewers expense. It could have been better, with the premise and all (well, it's not like we haven't seen something similar before, but it still could have been better) but it's not any better the second or third time so my opinion is to skip the first time all together.
Bland Comedy, Waste of Talented Actors.......2006-11-18
A former US President Monroe Cole (played by two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman) decides to live in a small town of Mooseport, where he runs for mayor just to impress a beautiful vet Sally (Maura Tierney) he happened to meet. Watching this, a good-natured and timid local plumber (Ray Romano) also runs for mayor against the former President of United Sates, and with this silly competition among the unique townspeople of this small town things are going to get funnier and funnier, crazier and crazier... or, maybe not.
Sorry, but in "Welcome to Mooseport" things just remain bland for the most of the part. Surely there are some funny moments, thanks to Hackman, Rip Torn, and Marcia Gay Harden. Their first dinner scene of Monroe and Sally and the results broadcast live is one of such moments, but mostly you have to sit through the film watching good actors' talent wasted because of the lack of direction.
If the film's story or scenes had been more outlandish or more satirical, socially or politically, it could have succeeded in making us laugh or chuckle more. But what is worse is Ray Romano who could not hold his own before Gene Hackman in comic acting (or acting in general). This unlikely combination of Oscar winner and comedian would have worked with better acting or chemistry.
This film is directed by Donald Petrie, who did a better job in `Miss Congeniality' with Sandra Bullock, whose delightful comic interaction with supports especially Michael Caine is totally missing here. The characters provide one-liners, but most of them fall flat; and when the townspeople's eccentricity is represented by a naked old man running in the street (and other people talking with him as if it is nothing), what can I do?
And there is no nudity, no violence, and no offensive things in this film, but probably that is the greatest mistake that is committed by `Welcome to Mooseprt.' Luckily DVD has bonus features including two fake commercials made for this film, which may be funnier than the entire feature film.

Good performances in movie about hen-

Hackman) who is going to vacation home
after expensive divorce from ex-wife,
who decides to run for that town May-
or position when local Mayor drops dead
[not shown], to keep vacation home from
being carved up in divorce property split.
He bumps into local Handy(man) [Ray Ram-
ona], who plays surpringly wimpy, timid
character, who haas not popped the ques-
tion to grilfriend of six yrs. (!) Hack-
man asks Handyman to step aside in May-
oral race, thinking the creampuff will
role over but finds the country bump-
kin has plenty of fight when ex-Pres.
asks out Handy's girl for dinner! Red
Green fans will love role played by Red
Green reg. Wayne Robson, a canadian act-
or best known for 'Mike Hamar' role on
the popular R.G. show in Canada, which
is shown in US on PBS on selected sta-
tions around country. Marsha Harden &
vet character actor Rip Torn almost steal
this pic from Ramano and Hackman, which
is NOT a bad thing. Very Funny, underrated!

Mooseport.....Not bad, but could be better.......2006-06-23
I was looking for a good comedy selection, and Welcome to Mooseport looked like a good choice. I didn't know anything about it other than Gene Hackman played an ex-president of the USA. If you are a fan of Gene Hackman, this movie would be a real treat. He does a great job, both in his top-notch acting and in his ability to keep the movie as entertaining as it was. The other performances are decent, but for the most part not on par with Hackman.
I would liked to have seen more time dedicated solely to the main story, and less to the romantic side stories as well. That said, it is still a funny movie. I recommend it for a lazy afternoon but, before you start, I suggest you read the general plot premise. That way you will not imagine an entirely different plot and be disappointed.

Joe Somebody: It's brains over brawn as Tim Allen reunites with The Santa Clause director John Pasquin for this amiable comedy about a devoted dad who almost lets his fists do the talking. After being humiliated by the office bully (played by The Tick's Patrick Warburton), corporate nebbish Joe Scheffer (Allen) vows revenge. He becomes an office celebrity, taking kung fu lessons with a has-been action star (Jim Belushi) and preparing for a rematch against his tormentor. Kid stuff, to be sure, but Joe Somebody benefits from Allen's Everyman appeal, especially when he's getting his values adjusted by a caring colleague (Julie Bowen, from TV's Ed), or trying to make good with his daughter (Hayden Panettiere) and ex-wife (Kelly Lynch). The comedy is pure vanilla, and the good-guy lessons are learned with bland, family-fare efficiency, but the Allen-Bowen romance is gently engaging, and Allen's flair for slapstick doesn't go to waste. As a pacifist hero, this Joe is somebody to root for. --Jeff Shannon

[Three-and-a-half out of five] Any movie with Moose in the title attracts me..........2006-07-08
Good performances in movie about hen-
pecked very popular ex-Pres. (Gene
Hackman) who is going to vacation home
after expensive divorce from ex-wife,
who decides to run for that town May-
or position when local Mayor drops dead
[not shown], to keep vacation home from
being carved up in divorce property split.
He bumps into local Handy(man) [Ray Ram-
ona], who plays surpringly wimpy, timid
character, who haas not popped the ques-
tion to grilfriend of six yrs. (!) Hack-
man asks Handyman to step aside in May-
oral race, thinking the creampuff will
role over but finds the country bump-
kin has plenty of fight when ex-Pres.
asks out Handy's girl for dinner! Red
Green fans will love role played by Red
Green reg. Wayne Robson, a canadian act-
or best known for 'Mike Hamar' role on
the popular R.G. show in Canada, which
is shown in US on PBS on selected sta-
tions around country. Marsha Harden &
vet character actor Rip Torn almost steal
this pic from Ramano and Hackman, which
is NOT a bad thing. Very Funny, underrated!
See it!
